Portrait of John Keats on his deathbed by Joseph Severn (below). Photographs by courtesy of the Keats-Shelley House.
O
n 31 October 1820 the brilliant young English poet, John Keats, disembarked in Naples after an extremely hazardous journey by sea from England. It was his 25th birthday and he only had another four months to live. Keats was on his way to Rome for the winter with his friend the painter Joseph Severn, in order to recover his health. He was pretty sure that he had consumption, then a popular term for pulmonary tuberculosis, and was not going to recover. Others were slightly more hopeful that a winter in Rome would do him good, certain anyway that another winter in England would kill him. So he had agreed to leave for Italy where he had never been before, saying goodbye to his young love, Fanny Brawne, who he would never see again. The arrival in Naples was dramatic; after three weeks at sea the ship was immediately placed in quarantine because there had been an outbreak of typhus in London. After 10 days in very cramped conditions on board, the passengers were finally allowed ashore. Keats and Severn set out to explore a city neither of them knew. A week later the young men hired a small carriage to take them to Rome. It must have been small because Severn often got out to walk alongside in order to give Keats more room. The journey took eight days across difficult terrain, with the two eating and lodging as cheaply as they could. On 15 November they were met in Rome by the 32-year-old Scottish doctor, James Clark, who had arranged rooms for them at Piazza di Spagna 26. He would care for Keats until he died on 23 February after almost uninterrupted suffering in the small room on the second floor. Even today Keats and Severn would undoubtedly recognise the house where they stayed for those three months. While the rest of the city has changed almost beyond recognition the façade of number 26 is nearly exactly as it then was, apart from the difference in the colour of the paintwork, which is no longer the ox-blood red that gave it its name, La Casina Rossa. At the time it was a lodging house, mainly for foreigners and mainly English-speaking ones. It was only five years since the Napoleonic wars had ended and the English were once again travelling to Europe, something that they had been unable to do for several decades, first because of the French Revolution and then because of war with Napoleon. Clark had arranged rooms for Keats and Severn on the second floor with Anna Angeletti, a Venetian whose Roman husband, an etcher of plates for prints, had died that same year. Their rooms, which cost £10 a month, communicated with hers but faced the front of the house, looking out over the Spanish Steps in one direction and the Barcaccia fountain in Piazza di Spagna in the other. She and her married daughter were the only permanent residents. On the first floor there was an Englishman and his French valet and on the top floor an Irishman and an Italian army officer. Much is known of those dramatic weeks thanks to Severn’s letters home to friends, full of desperation and loneliness, as well as of the details of the relentless progress of the disease and the draconian cure of a near-starvation diet coupled with induced bloodletting, which was then the standard treatment. Nevertheless the two of them, the dying young poet and his devoted friend, must have managed to make a considerable impression during their few weeks in Rome as Clark’s attention was constant and there was a good gathering at the funeral for Keats on 26 February in what is now the beautiful non-Catholic cemetery by the Piramide Cestio, but which was then an open field containing only about 30 graves. Such was the fear of the disease – and therefore the constant nursing of Severn is all the more admirable – that immediately after his death the room where Keats died was stripped, his bed destroyed, along with all the drapes and furniture. The story might have finished there but for a series of circumstances that kept the memory of those tragic months alive. Keats’s standing as a great English poet certainly plays the most important part, even though when he died he was virtually unknown and some of the early reviews of his poems had been discouraging. Severn’s letters home about Keats’s death, his continued presence in Rome afterwards, where he became one of the leading figures of the English-speaking community until his death in 1879* also did much to publicise the story. The tragic death of Percy Bysshe Shelley, that other great English Romantic poet, only 18 months after that of Keats, also fired the imagination. He drowned aged 29 in a storm off the Tuscany coast near cont. page 13

Remembering John Keats Cont. from page 3.
Lerici, and his remains were buried in the same cemetery as his friend Keats. Perhaps no less important was the pull of Rome itself for English-speaking painters, poets, literary figures and artists of all sorts in the 19th- and early 20th-century, which also helped to keep the story – and the inspiration – of those last dramatic days alive. At the beginning of the 20th-century two American writers, a Mrs Haslehurst and her daughter, were still allowing the curious to visit the rooms where Keats died, but the lodging house had become so dilapidated that it looked like a tenement building and was about to be sold off to become a hotel. The Haslehursts would have bought the house themselves had they had sufficient funds. However, a group of English and American admirers then living in Rome formed what must have been a very forceful committee in 1903 to raise enough money to buy the building from the then owner, a Mrs Chadwick. Progress was fast and by 1906 the house was theirs. Three years later the building was opened as a museum, dedicated to Keats, Shelley and other Romantic poets associated with the city. The committee had done its work so well that the King of Italy, Victor Emmanuel III, was present at the occasion and letters of support were read out from the president of the United States, Theodore Roosevelt, and the British king, Edward VII. In a city full of museums and priceless works of art it is somewhat remarkable that this small museum has not just survived, but thrived. Part of its pull is certainly its location at the bottom of the Spanish Steps. There is also a sort of aura about the house because the refurbished room where Keats died is there for all to see, almost as it was nearly 200 years ago. Add to this the extraordinary collection of documents it contains – one of the finest libraries on the literature of the Romantic poets in the world – as well as its fascinating memorabilia, much of it donated by the poets’ families and associates. And finally there is something about the house, its history and its collection that has attracted the extraordinary dedication of its curators. There have only been four since the museum

opened, Vera Cacciatore, Sir Joseph Cheyne, Bathsheba Abse and Catherine Payling, different in their ways and style, but all fired by a sort of missionary zeal about the job entrusted to them. After ups and downs, especially during and immediately after world war two, the museum now seems to be on the crest of another wave. In the last ten years not only has the inside of the building been completely overhauled and remodernised but two new important spaces have been formed, one for storage in what used to be a damp basement and another, which is about to become operational, at the back on the first floor looking out to Trinità dei Monti. What was previously a small apartment there has now been cleverly converted into an important addition to the main part of the museum on the second floor. It is the new ticket and merchandising area, which frees up considerable space upstairs, and also provides a completely new area for exhibitions, lectures and small meetings. There are also plans for the landscaping of the terrace that leads out from the kitchen area at the back. The dedication to the museum continues, not least in the generous donations that have recently been received both for the new building works and furnishings and also for the rare books that continue to be added to the collection. While Keats and Severn would still recognise the outside of Piazza di Spagna 26 today, the inside and the worldwide interest the museum now commands is beyond anything either of them could possibly have imagined when they first climbed the steep and narrow stairs to their second floor lodgings on 15 November 1820. Rome Romaeuropa Festival 2010. 21 Sept-2 Dec. Romaeuropa celebrates its 25th anniversary with a programme that features 20 national and three world premieres. One of the keys to the festival’s continuing success is probably the support of important cultural centres such as Rome’s Third University, the Accademia di S. Cecilia, the Filarmonica, the Galleria Nazionale d’ Arte Moderna as well as the city and the region. There is also a series of mini monothematic cycles dedicated to electronic music and visual arts. Events take place in venues all over the city. For booking and information tel. 0645553050, www.romaeuropa.net. Tersicore. Nuovi Spazi per la Danza. 29 Sept-13 Nov. The young Israeli choreographer, Emanuel Gat, wraps up the festival with his Winter Variations (13 Nov). Auditorium Conciliazione, Via della Conciliazione 3. Accordion Festival. 16 Oct. This is the fourth 2 Q page 15 V-A edition of the International V-Accordion contest, promoted and organised by Roland Europe, a company that produces electronic musical instruments. This annual gathering is the only festival in the world dedicated to the digital accordion and consists of an important competition for this particular field. Accordionists in two categories – senior soloist and young soloist – compete for the title of world champion of the digital accordion. For those who, like me, don't know what a V-Accordion is, it’s a digital piano accordion created by Roland engineers who purportedly sampled scores of popular traditional acoustic accordions, in search of a single instrument that can faithfully reproduce various traditional models, including their different tuning characteristics. As a result, the V-Accordion can switch instantly from Italian jazz to a German folk, French musette, or historic bandoneon. Tickets are free but they must be booked in advance. Auditorium Parco della Musica, Viale P. de Coubertin, tel. 0680241281, www.auditorium.com.
Parma Festival Verdi. 1-28 Oct. This international opera festival celebrates the composer in his native Parma to coincide with the month of his birth. Giorni Felici. 15-24 Oct. From Beckett, directed by Robert Wilson with Adriana Asti. Samuel Beckett’s 1960 play focuses on the emotions and fragilities of growing old. He brings us the world of a mature lady. She is buried up to her waist in a mound of earth, which Wilson sees as the result of some kind of eruption. The lower part of her body is immobile and hidden to others. She can only communicate with her arms, her hands, her face, her words and her eyes. She tries to turn every day into a happy one, finding moments of happiness through a selfcreated ritual. In Italian. Teatro Valle, Via del Teatro Valle 21, tel. 06 68803794, www.teatrovalle.it.

Based on the famous work by Pushkin, Onegin calls for the most expressive acting as well as dancing, and Cranko turns up the emotions in each scene, climaxing in the final pas de deux between Onegin and Tatiana. Monnier and La Ribot have examined the codes of classical burlesque, in films by Peter Sellers, Jacques Tati and Charlie Chaplin, and studied their applicability for dance: “We have discovered that which is being exhibited in burlesque is usually that which is supposed to be hidden in dance.” Teatro Comunale Luciano Pavarotti, for the Vie Scena Contemporanea Festival. Turin Compagnia Troubleyn/Jan Fabre. 15 Oct. In Another Sleepy Delta Dusty Day, choreography by Jan Fabre and Ivana Jozic. In 2008 Jan Fabre created this work, a theatre/dance solo, for the Croatian performer, Ivana Jozic. In 2010, Artemis Stavridi and Fabre created a new version for an extensive international tour. The story is taken from the 1967 hit, “Ode to Billy Joe”, by Bobby Gentry. The song tells the tale of a suicide. A teenage girl is having dinner with her family when her mother announces that Billy Joe has jumped off a bridge to his death. While the family members dish up memories of Billy Joe, discuss day-to-day worries and pass the food, the mother happens to notice that her daughter has lost her appetite. Was there a secret relationship between her teenage daughter and Billy Joe? The theme of forbidden love and suicide constitutes the starting point of Fabre's creation, which he has chosen to rework in the form of a letter written from a man to his beloved. demy (EAA) in Rome opened to the public on 1 October with Egypt’s first designated permanent antiquities exhibition space abroad. Among the 120 ancient Egyptian treasures is a statue of the pharaoh Khafra from the IV dynasty, a varnished sarcophagus and a collection of ancient coins. Sporting a contemporary look with a glass front and marble facade carved with hieroglyphics, the academy is furnished with renovated facilities including a hi-tech library, restaurant, conference hall, cinema, art galleries, and artist’s studios. The principle objective of the academy is the promotion of Egyptian and Arabic culture in Italy, as well as welcoming selected Egyptian students of art who reside and study there. It provides a varied programme of artistic events throughout the year including contemporary Egyptian art exhibitions, Egyptian films and theatrical productions. Modena Toshiki Okada. 13, 14 Oct. In We are the Undamaged Others, choreography by Toshiki Okada. The cutting-edge theatre/performance company of Okada has been turning heads in Tokyo for several years. What makes Okada’s theatre unique is its challenge to representational theatre, taking the form of abstract yet dramatic narrative that fills the gap between theatre and performance art. Both the show’s choreography – consisting of movement disassociated from speech – and its language, which has been dubbed “super real” Japanese because it is fragmentary, abbreviated and often incomplete, are anchored to Okada’s sense that our reality resembles what we see on stage much less than we imagine. In Okada’s own words: “I reproduce the real, inarticulate way that average people actually speak, because one of the things I want to express is what lies within that ineptness… and in reality it is extremely rare for body movements to complement or reinforce the words we are speaking”. Teatro delle Passioni, for the Vie Scena Contemporanea Festival. For information tel. 0592136021, www.viefestivalmodena.com.

ART
A Space Invader or an invader of space? Alessandro Ciccarese
“T
he question of whether or not we are alone in the universe has been answered.” Tiny alien spaceships have, for some time now, been positioning themselves in the largest inhabited centres of our planet. The response to the apocalyptic dilemma of the film Independence Day quoted above, has now been confirmed in Rome, which – after Paris, London, Tokyo, New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Istanbul and Kathmandu – has been hit by: Invaders. During the torrid Roman summer these spaceships have been appearing suddenly on street corners, walls and buildings – you might even have spotted one whilst queuing for the Vatican Museums and asked yourself what it was. These are not really the works of aliens but they are the work of Invader, the mysterious urban artist from Paris whose street art is inspired by the cult video game from the 1970s and 1980s: Space Invaders. His pieces are small (and not so small) mosaic works of art made from multi-coloured squares. The designs, based on the graphics in the afore-mentioned game, are well suited to the technique of mosaic (one pixel = one mosaic square). This urban invasion has an official website, www.spaceinvaders.com, which details the places in which the French artist has worked, or rather conquered, with information on the materials used and an interesting photographic gallery. He works incognito and has no intention of revealing his identity. With the possible exception of a police force or two which has arrested him for defacing public property, nobody knows who he is. He started his invasion back in 1998 in his home town, Paris, which is still in pole position for the most invaded city to date. His choice of location for the mosaics is not accidental but is based on the following criteria: aesthetic, strategic or conceptual. He always works alone and each piece is unique. In using the common kitchen or bathroom tile he can be assured that his work is totally weather-proof and able to withstand any climatic extremes. Sizes tend to be roughly 20cm x 30cm but there are larger ones too. Once he has chosen his target he sets up camp for two or three weeks to familiarise himself with the city and to find the right inspiration. It’s not an SAS in-and-out-as-fast-as-he-can type of mission, and in terms of location he often favours the obscure over the obvious. Try to spot the mosaics in Tor Pignattara. He is highly self-critical and even awards himself points (from 10-50) upon completion of his various creations, taking into account size, composition, location and difficulty. And even though he gets no financial reward – in effect he is donating his art to the people – Invader seems to take pleasure from the fact that his work is seen by so many. Certain Invader fans who follow him on internet or, indeed, around the globe, occasionally go too far and decide they would like one of his pieces for themselves. Fortunately the cement Invader uses is strong and does not easily come away from the walls, however the action of trying to remove the tiles results in damage to the art and a few chipped tiles coming away in pieces. Rather than a man of hidden talents, Invader is a hidden man of talents with several interesting ongoing and developing projects such as his ‘Rubikcubism’. He decided upon the name himself and it entails creating art by manipulating Rubik’s Cubes and then arranging them together to create large images. One of his recent projects involved pro13 October 2010

ducing a series of these ‘Rubikcubisms’ based on the Mona Lisa, the Dali Lama and several Pop Art icons. These pieces are constructed solely from multiple Rubik’s Cubes, each cube being turned until the desired effect is achieved. The method is very precise: first the image is drafted out on paper, then Invader begins twisting cube after cube until all the cubes have revealed the required colour co-ordinations – thus creating light and shade in a wonderful 3D effect. Invader cannot cheat by peeling off the sticky coloured squares because unlike the western cubes I remember at school, he uses the Chinese version where each colour-square is solid plastic. He prefers the overall finish which is more glossy. He does not dismantle and reconfigure them either – for our expert it’s no quicker, as he has learned to twist a cube in a matter of seconds – about 10 in fact. Another interesting development is his idea of working with QR Code Data Matrix, the next generation in barcoding. Normally the vertical lines of a barcode correlate to a series of numbers (which then usually give a price). QR codes contain real data such as actual words, hyperlinks, contact information, and it is possible to scan these QR coded images with a cell phone with IMatrix software. As if by magic what seems to be an abstract piece of art turns into words, which appear on the cell phone screen. This mix of lo-tech/hi-tech appeals to Invader. He mixes simple tiles with hi-tech IMatrix to create unique, abstract, aesthetic works of art. Invader demonstrated this with his iphone (having installed the necessary software first). He took a photo of one of his QR coded pieces of art and there on the screen appeared the words “This is an invasion”. Invader is already in Rome as an artist in residence – one of three artists taking part in the Living Layers project. The aim of this experimental and innovative project is to appraise works of art which, in some way, interact directly with (or contaminate) their surroundings, thus becoming an integral and inextricable part of that landscape – or in Invader’s case, cityscape. Overseeing the project is the Wunderkammern Cultural Association which agreed to three guest artists in residence working in studios in their premises for three months. The results of their efforts culminate in three individual exhibitions. Invader’s inauguration is set for 23 October at 18.00, but I suspect – if he is present at all – he will be in disguise! See how many alien invaders you can spot around the city (for a headstart go to Google maps, insert Invader and see what comes up). For further information on the Living Layers project visit: Wunderkammern, Via Gabrio Serbelloni 124 – 00176 Roma, tel. 0645435662. www.wunderkammern.net
