Giancarlino Benedetti Corcos. Il Cappello, 2010. Giancarlino Benedetti Corcos works right in the heart of Rome. His tiny studio spills into the alley for the entertainment of carpenters, old furniture dealers, chirpy soccer-playing kids, bemused tourists. That he studied at the Istituto della Grafica, the school of architecture and other traditional venues is of little import by now. He has long overcome conventional hindrance. There is no technique, no proportion, no obvious ponderous reference, the deviltry is alongside the trail of the very life of the old-new city. The familiar landscapes, the gasometro, roller skaters, pretty and ugly brides, frowsy angels spin their rhythms. Artists, critics, collectors, other street people look at him with awe and envy. Giancarlino is a natural. Viva Giancarlino, our own Basquiat! ccording to Wikipedia – the online do-it-yourself encyclopedia, which no self-respecting person should admit to using – Rome has been sacked seven times*. Most people know about the seventh sack in 1527, when the bravery of the Swiss Guards, all but a handful of whom were massacred, allowed the pope to escape into Castel S. Angelo, away from the rampaging troops of Emperor Charles V. The destruction in 410 is less well known, but this autumn three foreign cultural academies ** are using its 1,600th anniversary to draw public attention to the destruction of Rome by Alaric, king of the Visigoths. On three other occasions Rome has been pulled down and then rebuilt to serve its rulers’ political needs. While not sacks in the conventional sense they were certainly periods when the city was turned upside down. The first great period of urban development was under Sixtus V, pope from 1585-1590. In order to prove that the Reformation had not weakened the papacy he plunged the city into a frenzy of digging and building. All over town churches were embellished, roads laid down, fountains constructed and obelisks put up. The second great frenzy of reconstruction came at the end of the 19th century when the founders of a united Italy wanted to establish Rome as the new capital of a modern country. The third was when Mussolini tore down large sections of the city before reconstructing others to ennoble the image of the fascist state. With the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy now underway, it is worth remembering what Rome was like before the founders of the new nation moved in. Imagine Rome without the Victor Emmanuel Monument, Piazza Venezia, Via Nazionale and the old railway station, on the site of what was to become Mussolini’s Stazione Termini. Think of the Campidoglio with houses and cloisters clustered around it, of green fields up to the Vatican walls and no housing in Prati. Consider the unsanitary conditions in a town flooded by the Tiber every winter. Remember the Jews locked into the ghetto from sundown to sunrise by papal order. The first great symbol of the new national power was the soaring Victor Emmanuel Monument in Piazza Venezia, also known as the Vittoriano, or Altare della Patria, now the resting place of the Unknown Soldier. It took 50 years to complete and much of mediaeval Rome around the Capitoline Hill was razed to accommodate it. Giuseppe Sacconi, a young architect from the Marche, was still unqualified when he won the second competition for its design in 1882. He never saw the finished edifice (or its official inauguration in 1911) but one of the architects who took over Sacconi’s work when he died in 1905 was Gaetano Koch, the mastermind of that other great icon of the new country, the Bank of Italy. The imposing headquarters of the central bank – a solid edifice in stark contrast to the whimsical flights of fantasy of the Altare della Patria – were sited in Via Nazionale (what else could the street have been called?) almost equidistant between present day Piazza Venezia and the railway station. Palazzo Koch, as the building is still known, was completed in four years, speedily and efficiently, in keeping with the image of a central bank. The story of Palazzo di Giustizia, that third great pillar of the new nation, was quite different. Built on the banks of the Tiber its foundations were, and still are, shaky. Marshy ground has always been the excuse. But how Castel S. Angelo, the popes’ impenetrable fortress just a stone’s throw down river has never seemed to have difficulties with its foundations, while the builders of the Palazzaccio, as it is often called, never managed to get them quite right is something of a mystery. Its architect from Perugia, Guglielmo Calderini, redid the plans three times and the edifice took over two decades to complete. In the process it was tarnished by financial speculation involving the real estate development of neighbouring Prati, the new suburb where the infant nation’s civil servants and lawyers were to live. cont. page 13

the Via Cassia on the last 200 kms to Rome, braving sometimes heavy traffic. The entry to Rome itself is a disgrace – you have no choice but to walk on the Via Cassia. But for all of its travails and challenges, the Via Francigena is a magnificent walk. The way broadly follows the route of pilgrims from the Middle Ages and in particular that taken by Sigeric, archbishop of Canterbury, who left a stage by stage account of his journey back from Rome in 990-992. I started from my home town in Coggeshall in north Essex and walked the Essex Way into London from where I set out with the express intention of reversing history and travelling from St Paul’s Cathedral to St Peter’s Basilica. It took me a total of 75 days, including eight rest days. I crossed Kent on the North Downs Way, ferried from Dover to Calais, and then headed for Arras and from there I broadly followed Sigeric’s route – walking to Rheims, Besançon and over the Jura mountains to Lausanne in Switzerland.

I came over the Alps at the Grand St Bernard Pass, at the top walking on the old Roman road which bears deep wheel ruts from centuries of use. There are similar ancient sections further on where you touch the footfall of past pilgrims, including a delightful stretch of paved Roman basalt road south of Lake Bolsena. After the Alps there are many more hills ahead – three quarters of Italy is hills – and some steep climbs on narrow paths over sometimes broken ground. The Via Francigena passes through the cities of Aosta, Vercelli, Pavia, Fidenza, Lucca, Siena and Viterbo, and takes in some of the most scenic Tuscan towns – the emerging and receding views of S. Miniato and S. Gimignano are timeless. It meanders through the beautiful Val d’Orcia where the rolling hills of Tuscany, with their landmark farmhouses, cypress trees, vineyards, cornfields and wooded groves, are best savoured at three miles an hour. A large wolf bounded across my tracks in southern Tuscany, and several snakes slithered across my path, but the biggest menace throughout Italy was from unleashed farm dogs. Walking through Italy at the height of a hot summer I rarely had problems finding food and water. Every small hamlet still has a drinking water fountain, and most still have a café or bar. France may be easier to traverse on foot – it is flatter and there are more footpaths and small country roads to walk down – but the French have made only a partial commitment to La Voie Francigène; it is hardly way-marked at all in the north of France. As for shops and bars, they are long gone, and often the only source of water in the lost villages of the French interior is the tap in the cemeteries. Those seeking their Pilgrim Testimonium need only start at Aquapendente, some 160 kms from Rome, which can be reached from there comfortably in a week. Only mad dogs and Englishmen come all the way from Essex.

The birth of the new capital Cont. from page 3.

The list of buildings goes on and on; the ministry of the interior, the ministry of finance, the synagogue where the ghetto once stood, the river embankments to stop the Tiber flooding, which was Giuseppe Garibaldi’s pet project, and on a lighter note the opera house and the Capannelle race course. It is strange to think that 100 years ago only the central bank, the opera house and the Capannelle had been completed and that Rome was only just beginning to recover from a serious financial crisis caused by uncontrolled speculation in real estate.

Rome 1V page 15 Mexico. Teotihuacan: The City of the Gods.

9 Nov-Feb 2011. This is an exhibition dedicated to the pre-Columbian civilisation of Teotihuacan. The city of Teotihuacan was once home for up to 200,000 people and from 200 BC-700 AD was a powerful political, military, economic and cultural centre to which all of Mesoamerica looked for inspiration. Scholars are agreed that the city was destroyed by a devastating fire in the 7th century but are divided as to whether the blaze was started by invaders or insurgents. To this day, the downfall of the city and dispersal of its people is shrouded in mystery; however it remains the most visited of Mexico’s 170 archaeological sites. Visitors to the exhibition can view 300 artefacts from this lost civilisation, including stone carvings and masks discovered in recent excavations. The highlight of the show is the display of fragments of murals which were painted 2,000 years ago. Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Via Nazionale 194, tel. 0639967500. www.palazzoesposizioni.it. 10.00-20.00, Fri and Sat 10.00-22.30. Mon closed. NEW 1V page 15 Mexico. Carlos Amorales. A selection of photographs of the Mexican Revolution tells the story of the crucial political events and of the legendary armed movements that rocked the country between 1910 and 1920. The photographs, from numerous archives are organised chronologically, shedding light on daily life and on the social processes triggered by the revolution. La maiolica italiana tra 1500 e 1600. 20 Oct-16 Jan 2011. The exhibition celebrates “the whites”, a specific style of pottery from Faenza in the 1540s. The innovative shapes, designs and glazes of the pottery determined its immediate success. Known as faentini, the whites became so famous that the French shortened their name to faience, now the French name for majolica and pottery. The exhibition displays some 130 pieces, and starts with a section which illustrates the historical background of the production of the whites. The work from many Italian regions is on show, starting with Emilia Romagna (Faenza), where the whites arose. Capitoline Museums, Piazza del Campidoglio 1, tel. 060608. 09.00-21.00. NEW

Z dance Reggio Emilia Compagnia Aterballetto. 29, 30 Oct. In Come un respiro, H+, and Front line, choreographies by Mauro Bigonzetti and Henry Oguike. Front Line, first staged in 2002 by the Anglo-Nigerian Oguike, was immediately singled out as an astonishingly bold, assured work for such a young choreographer. He went on to carve a niche for himself in contemporary dance creating works for his own company as well as receiving many commissions from international dance groups. Here he is paired up with Aterballetto’s director and main choreographer, Bigonzetti, who presents two works, the second of which is an Italian premiere. Teatro Valli, tel. 0522458811, www.iteatri.re.it. Saburo Teshigawara/Karas. 7 Nov. In Obsession, choreography by Saburo Teshigawara. This 2009 work by Teshigawara is his first duet dance creation. Teshigawara, who began his stage career after studying plastic arts and classical ballet, founded his Tokyo-based company, Karas, in 1985 and went on to receive many awards and much critical acclaim. In a recent interview, Teshigawara said his inspiration for Obsession was seeing Spanish director Luis Bunuel’s surrealistic 1929 short silent film, Un Chien Andalou, at age 19. “That opens with a man sharpening a razor and slicing across a person’s eye,” he said. “I took that to be asking viewers to question their conceptions of “seeing reality.” So, with Obsession, I want to ask them to open their eyes without defining.” Teatro Ariosto, tel. 0522458811, www.iteatri.re.it.

Gat uses the scale to intensify the actions, relations and intentions of the choreography, allowing the space to become almost a third character in itself. The iconoclastic Belgian visual artist and performer, Fabre, is back at Romaeuropa with a continuation of his work dedicated to the human body, to transformation and to utopia. Focusing his work on death Fabre puts life on stage, because life itself, he says, is a preparation for death, forcing us to contemplate and face life in a more complete and intense manner. Turin Sara Marasso. 29, 30 Oct. In Soluzione parziale a problema transitorio, choreography by Sara Marasso. For Torinodanza Festival. As part of its mission to host and highlight emerging choreographers from the region, Torinodanza yields its important stage to this contemporary dance solo with a study of arms as the engine of movement. Cavallerizza Reale Manica, tel. 0115169411, www.teatrostabiletorino.it. Les Ballets C. de la B. 29, 30 Oct. In Primero erscht, choreography by Lisi Estaras. For Torinodanza Festival. Founded by Alain Platel in 1984, the Ballets C. de la B. has nurtured an eclectic range of dancers and choreographers, not least Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. Argentinean Estaras is the latest example of a company member turned dancemaker and with Primero erscht she offers life-enhancing theatre. The programme notes explain that the piece is about childhood and first times, and that Klezmer music has a special meaning for Estaras. However Primero’s fascinating melancholy is rooted in choreography tailored to each dancer’s imaginative power and different technique, although Estaras still manages to create a sense of unique purpose. Cavallerizza Reale Maneggio, tel. 0115169411, www.teatrostabiletorino.it. Les Ballets C. de la B. 9, 10 Nov. In Out of context – for Pina, choreography by Alain Platel. For Torinodanza festival. Selected by the magazine Tanz as 2010 Production of the Year, Out of Context – for Pina continues the artist’s investigation into developing a body language that can translate exaggerated human emotions. Nine exquisitely skilled dancers perform on an empty stage with only basic lighting and a soundtrack born of the creative process – using their bodies as the raw material to explore themes of hysteria and madness, the beauty of the malformed, and the emotional power of the misshapen. Projecting London, by the architectural practice Allies and Morrison, is the first in a series of exhibitions about urban renewal at the British School at Rome this autumn. The series – Three Cities in Flux – examines different approaches to regeneration in Italy and Britain, looking at specific examples in London, Milan and Rome. Projecting London exhibits the masterplanning work of Allies and Morrison – and in particular its work for the 2012 London Olympics (from Games to Legacy) and the redevelopment of the King’s Cross area of London.

P

Q It looks at Allies and Morrison’s approach to masterplanning – revealing how the practice seeks to develop a non-prescriptive framework rather than imposing a singular concept or an a priori idea. The architectural practice focuses on how understanding the ‘what and how’ of a site leads to it developing a response that can adapt over time but remain deeply rooted in its context. This exhibition identifies the concerns that shape the architects’ thinking and illustrates how these are tested and contrasted. Projecting London is Allies and Morrison’s first exhibition in Italy. opera

Opera Notes 1P page 15 As Rome’s new opera season is announced Paolo di Nicola looks ahead to what we can expect at the

Teatro dell’ Opera, which opens with a new production of Moïse et Pharaon. In prima esecuzione europea sarà data A View from the Bridge dello statunitense William Bolcom (18 gennaio), tratta dall’omonima commedia di Arthur Miller. Nei cast poi non mancheranno noti e apprezzati registi (Pier’Alli, Gabriele Lavia, Graham Vick, Franco Zeffirelli), direttori d’orchestra (Bruno Bartoletti, Bruno Campanella, James Conlon, Fabio Luisi, Pinchas Steinberg,) e cantanti (Patrizia Ciofi, Sonia Ganassi, Felicity Palmer, Olga Peretjatko, Saimir Pirgu, Marina Rebeka, Ramòn Vargas). 5 Nov. At the heart of this fifth edition of Rome’s international film festival is, as always, the Auditorium Parco della Musica and its red carpet, supposedly the largest of its kind in the world. Next to the Auditorium is a specially constructed Cinema Village for festival-goers. The festival has many different themes, tributes and focuses, and the programme includes exhibitions and encounters with protagonists of the film world as well as film showings. But its backbone is the so-called Official Selection with 16 new films in competition. These films are judged by an international jury, chaired by actor, screenwriter and director Sergio Castellitto, which will confer awards for best film, best actor, best actress, and the international jury award. An unusual feature of the festival is the Marc’Aurelio award for best film, selected by the votes of all ticket holders. Auditorium Parco della Musica, Viale P. de Coubertin. Rome’s annual autumn jazz festival directed by Mario Ciampà presents the new generation of Italian jazz musicians and composers. Ciampà stands by his choice to offer a programme made up of many yet unknown names, “because to love jazz music”, he says, “means not only to host its more famous protagonists, but also to encourage young musicians, offering them tools and opportunity.” Auditorium Parco della Musica, Viale P. de Coubertin. Romaeuropa Festival 2010. 21 Sept-2 Dec. Romaeuropa celebrates its 25th anniversary with a programme that features 20 national and three world premieres. One of the keys to the festival’s continuing success is probably the support of important cultural centres such as Rome’s Third University, the Accademia di S. Cecilia, the Filarmonica, the Galleria Nazionale d’ Arte Moderna as well as the city and the region. There is also a series of mini monothematic cycles dedicated to electronic music and visual arts. Events take place in venues all over the city. For booking and information tel. 0645553050, www.romaeuropa.net. Tersicore. Nuovi Spazi per la Danza. 29 Sept-13 Nov. This festival, in its fifth year, brings ballet and contemporary dance stars to the rather bare Roman stage. In the past it has hosted big names such as Sylvie Guillem, the Martha Graham Dance Company, Bill T. Jones and Mikhail Baryshnikov. The young Israeli choreographer, Emanuel Gat, wraps up the festival with his Winter Variations (13 Nov). Auditorium Conciliazione, Via della Conciliazione 3. CULTURE

Egyptian Academy relaunched Andy Devane

D

ue to open to the public in mid-November, it is immediately evident that no expense has been spared on the luxurious new vision of the Egyptian Academy in Rome by Egyptian architect (and former academy resident) Hatem Said and Italian consultancy firm Quasar. After a two-year programme of restructuring works costing €8 million, the academy was officially inaugurated by Egyptian president, Hosni Mubarak, and Italian prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, on 23 September. Among the guests were the cultural ministers from both countries – Italy’s Sandro Bondi and Egypt’s Farouk Hosni, a former academy director in the 1980s. Inside the buildings, each room has been completely redesigned while the décor was selected by the academy’s debonair director himself, Ashraf Reda. With an award-winning career behind him in interior design, the revamp of the academy has been a labour of love for Reda. As the last workmen hang the academy’s collection of 20th-century paintings on the freshly-painted walls, Reda states that the new design mixes heritage with modernism and is reflective of the best in Egyptian art and culture. Since his arrival in 2008, Reda has overseen the extensive renovations, which include the addition of a 220-sqm Egyptian museum, the first of its kind in Rome. Although it is housed within Egyptian property, it is Egypt’s first specifically designated museum in a foreign country. Divided into four sections, the permanent exhibition, The Golden Ages of Egypt: Continuity and Change, presents highlights of the Pharoahic, Greek-Roman, Coptic Christian and Islamic eras. The approximately 200 items on show are among Egypt’s prized antiquities and include a life-sized statue of the pharaoh Khafre from the fourth dynasty, Tutankhamun’s canopic coffinette, an enormous edition of the Qur’an with gold-decorated pages, the sphinx of Tohotmus III and a varnished sarcophagus. In one corner is the embalmed casket of the mummy of Sambathion while in another is a long unrolled papyrus scroll, in perfect condition, dating from 1,500 BC. Located in the basement of the building, the museum’s dimly-lit surroundings combined with its glowing exhibits add to the mysterious feeling of stepping back into another world. The priceless artefacts were selected from Cairo’s Egyptian Museum as well as the Coptic, Islamic and ceramic museums, by the minister for culture and the prominent archaeologist and secretary general of the supreme council of antiquities, Zahi Hawass. The academy’s new design contrasts contemporary with ancient: the once drab grey exterior is replaced with an impressive and beautiful façade of brown tinted glass and soft-ochre Travertine marble, and, although it will be unintelligible to the vast majority of visitors, there is a message behind the imposing hieroglyphic text that covers the academy’s front. These are the words of Petah Hotop the Egyptian sage from 2,600 BC, who instructed his son: “Do not be proud of your knowledge: consult the ignorant as you would the wise.” Its state-of the-art facilities include a hi-tech library with 10,000 books, a restaurant, a 200-seat cinema/theatre, ten artists’ studios and a gallery of important Egyptian paintings from the 1940s and 1950s. On display on the first floor is a selection of heavily-stylised replicas of ancient Egyptian statues, commissioned by King Farouk who died in Rome in 1965 while in exile. The principle objective of the academy is the promotion of Egyptian and Arabic culture in Italy, as well as welcoming ten selected Egyptian students of art who reside there for up to two-year periods of study. Artistic events take place throughout the year including contemporary Egyptian art exhibitions, lectures, Egyptian films and theatrical productions. 27 October 2010

No expense has been spared in the renovations to the Egyptian Academy which opens to the public in November

New façade of the Egyptian Academy with its imposing hieroglyphic text.

The academy’s history dates to 1924, when the celebrated Egyptian expressionist painter Ragheb Ayad, then in his early 30s, wrote to his government in Cairo. The letter read: “There are academies in Rome that welcome fine art students to support their studies; these academies are housed in grand buildings with studios for each art form, and all expenses to support the institution are fully subsidised by the government. At the end of the year there is an exhibit for the artists of each academy to show their work. This exhibition is opened by the King of Italy and his ministers. I am therefore asking you to intercede with our government to found a similar institution in Rome, to house Egyptian artists who, after completing their studies in our home country, wish to further their knowledge of arts in Rome.” Ayad’s concept struck a chord with the government, which formulated a decree for the academy’s establishment. In 1929 two architects, two sculptors and painter Ragheb Ayad became the academy’s first artists in residence. A sizable portion of their expenses was provided by Egyptian patron of the arts and founder of Cairo’s School of Fine Arts, Prince Youssef Kamal. The academy was initially housed at the Padiglione dell’Orologio in Villa Borghese’s Piazza di Siena before transferring to the Colle Oppio near the Colosseum. 30 years later construction work began on land donated by Italy to Egypt. The site was on Via Omero, directly opposite the British School at Rome and beside the Belgian Academy. In January 1966 the new Egyptian Academy opened its doors. To commemorate the event, Italian authorities named a nearby square in Villa Borghese in honour of the great Egyptian poet Ahmed Shawqi (1868-1932). Egypt acknowledged the gesture by gifting a large bronze statue of Shawqi by sculptor Gamal Segini, which stands in the square to this day. Big celebrations have been timed to coincide with the relaunch of the academy, which include several seminars on Egyptian history and culture. In addition there will be exhibitions of work by Egyptian artists such as Seif and Adham Wanli, Mahmoud Said, Taheya Halim, Hamed Nada, Margaret Nakhla, and most fittingly of all, the man who wrote that letter in 1924, Ragheb Ayad.
