AROUND ROME
Battling architectural barriers in a wheelchair Alessandro Ciccarese
T
o move, walk, travel – in a word, live. It would seem easy enough and most of us take it for granted, like having a coffee in a bar or going to an exhibition. But change the point of view and it all becomes more difficult. To see the world from a wheelchair, rather than standing on one’s own two feet, makes everything look different. Waiting for the bus, which was late as usual, I meet Antonio Spica who travels to work by bus and train every day. We start chatting about his situation – like that of so many others – and the difficulties of getting around the architectural barriers in Rome. There are all kinds of obstacles that affect his quality of life. Spica, who is wheelchair-bound, tries to manage with serenity and composure, overcoming each barrier as it comes because he feels it is important to be as independent as possible, whatever the difficulties. Finally the bus arrives and we set off on our way home. During the ride I can’t help but ask Spica how well public transport works for differently-abled people. I discover that not all buses in Rome are the latest models with facilities for wheelchairs. And sadly even many of the new buses with wheelchair access (those displaying the international sign for the disabled on the side) don’t function properly. Usually the ramp fails to extend or the curb is the wrong height. Unable to get on Spica has to ask the driver to telephone the operation room to request a special bus, which is supposed to arrive within five minutes. “When you do manage to get on is everything alright?” I ask. “Well, not everything,” Spica replies, pointing out that the buttons in the area Getting around Rome reserved for wheelchairs is not easy at (which include one to request a stop and one for the best of times but the ramp to extend to the curb) hardly ever work, for the disabled it forcing him to shout down is particularly difficult the crowded rush-hour bus to ask the driver for further assistance. For a foreigner who doesn’t speak the language it would make the whole process so much more dramatic and stressful. Fortunately, Spica points out, there are always enough sensitive, kind people willing to lend a hand. “But is it such a black picture for Rome’s tourists?” Spica smiles and says that luckily the airports of Fiumicino and Ciampino are accessible and equipped with good assistance from checkin to departure, and vice-versa when you arrive on an inbound flight. Both airports are easy to get around, the signs are clear, the toilets and lifts work well and there is enough room for manoeuvre. Those leaving by train from Stazione Termini, on the other hand, have to contact the Sala Blu at the station, located near the first platform at ground level. Here the operators will book tickets and provide assistance for getting on the train. When arriving you also need to inform the same Sala Blu in advance so that assistance can be provided for getting 10 November 2010

off the train as the doors are not at platform level. The most accessible toilets are near the Sala Blu; there are others on the opposite side of the station but they are on the first floor near a bar so you have to use the elevator. The signs aren’t easy to spot and when you do find them the instructions are not very clear. As we glance out of the window about half way through our journey we comment on how beautiful our city is with its rich history and monuments, but how does a person with disabilities manage to enjoy these gems of our artistic heritage? Spica tells me that when he decides to visit one of the monuments, whether it is a church, a museum or whatever, he always checks the location’s website for accessibility. In some places the wheelchair entrance is at the back of the building, in any case nowhere near the main one. However many important, as well as lesser-known monuments, are accessible. The most difficult aspect is organising a more complex itinerary. It would be useful if there were a comprehensive guide, or better still a website, with full details of access for the disabled for all of the monuments in the capital. Spica is currently working on this idea, together with the co-operative Europeconsulting. I notice a woman crammed between the ticket machine and the seats, armed with various bags, so I ask Spica about shopping. He smiles again at my many questions, saying that not all shops are accessible. Many have one or two steps, but luckily assistants are generally courteous and helpful and when required they assist him and his wheelchair into the shop. In clothing stores they will also help him – if he needs it – to try on clothes in the changing cubicle, which is often cramped, but not impossibly small. We have almost arrived at our destination and my final question before getting off the bus is about public toilets – a bane for anybody in this city. A bit crestfallen, Spica tells me that he has to go to bars or cafes but even then it’s not guaranteed there will be access for his wheelchair. Many bathrooms are in the basement and there are no lifts. There are public toilets with lifts around the city but unfortunately not on Spica’s route to and from work. We say goodbye and as I watch Spica manoeuvre onto yet another pavement, I hope that one day the so-called architectural barriers really will come down. Wanted in Rome

A walk on the Aventine

Irish cinema comes to Rome Cont. from page 3.
endearing film in the line-up is Ken Wardrop’s His and Hers, set in the hallways, living rooms and kitchens of the Irish midlands where the entirely female cast, numbering 70 women of all ages, talk candidly about the men in their lives. Jordon's 1982 classic, Angel, a dark tale of revenge, will also be screened. Although Irish producers would like to see their movies distributed abroad, the reality is that foreign distribution remains a problem. This makes the festival in Rome all the more important, especially from a tourism point of view. Each film was financed in Ireland, with help from the Irish Film Board, while some were European co-productions. A panel of judges will select a winner from the ten short films being screened in addition to the feature movies. Other initiatives include a lecture on dubbing, a conference on Irish mythology and the presentation of the book, Joyce and the Cinema, by a group of leading scholars of both James Joyce and the cinema. Pellis’s greatest aspiration for the Irish Film Festa is for it to grow without losing its cultural independence; she has no desire for it to become a commercial festival with red carpets and glitzy gala openings. She hopes that it could tour around Italy, presenting Irish films in various locations at different times of the year. “Maybe we are too ambitious” she says “but I think we could try to help Irish cinema become more widely distributed in Italy.” With the Irish Film Festa attracting more attention each year, it would appear to be just a matter of time before Pellis achieves her goal. Andy Devane *The festival is held in the Casa del Cinema, a custom-built venue in the grounds of Villa Borghese and is staged in collaboration with the IFI, Culture Ireland, Tourism Ireland and the embassy of Ireland to Italy, and produced by cultural association Archimedia and Roma Film Festival. Le Vie dei Festival. 28-30 Nov. The contemporary drama festival organised by the Associazione Cadmo in collaboration with city is back, with a focus on Belarus this year. For the first time in Rome, the Belarus Free Theatre will be on stage with Zone of Silence (28, 29 Nov) and Discover Love (30 Nov). The activity of this underground theatre company began in March 2005, during the second term of President Alexander Lukashenko, as an artistic means of resisting government pressure and censorship. Founded by playwrights Nikolai Khalezin and his wife, theatre producer Natalia Koliada, the team was subsequently joined by stage director Vladimir Scherban, who has produced the majority of Free Theatre performances. Under the current political system, Belarus Free Theatre has no official registration, no premises, nor any other facilities. Rehearsals and performances (always free of charge for the public) are normally held secretly in small private apartments, which, due to security and the risk of persecution, must constantly be changed. Staff members have been repeatedly harassed by the authorities and many have been sacked from their jobs at state-run theatres. In the years since its beginnings, the company has received the support of important personalities such as Vaclav Havel, Mick Jagger, Ariane Mnouchkine, Mark Ravenhill, Tom Stoppard and Harold Pinter. Performances are in Belarusian with Italian subtitles. Auditorium Parco della Musica, Viale P. de Coubertin. Rome Gezz. Generazione Jazz. Roma Jazz Festival 2010. 11-30 Nov. Rome’s annual autumn jazz festival directed by Mario Ciampà presents the new generation of Italian jazz musicians and composers. Ciampà stands by his choice to offer a programme made up of many yet unknown names, “because to love jazz music”, he says, “means not only to host its more famous protagonists, but also to encourage young musicians, offering them tools and opportunity.” Auditorium Parco della Musica, Viale P. de Coubertin. For booking and information tel. 0680241281, 892982, www.auditorium.com. Romaeuropa Festival 2010. 21 Sept-2 Dec. Romaeuropa celebrates its 25th anniversary with a programme that features 20 national and three world premieres. One of the keys to the festival’s continuing success is probably the support of important cultural centres such as Rome’s Third University, the Accademia di S. Cecilia, the Filarmonica, the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna as well as the city and the region. There is also a series of mini monothematic cycles dedicated to electronic music and visual arts. Events take place in venues all over the city. For booking and information tel. 0645553050, www.romaeuropa.net.
Inside the Montemartini museum. 1Q page 15 Montemartini Centrale di Note. 29 Oct-8 Jan 2011. A cycle of concerts followed by wine-tasting takes place in the former Montemartini thermoelectric centre, an unusual example of industrial archaeology converted into a museum. The backdrop for the concerts is old machinery for the production of electricity with a selection of master-
pieces of ancient sculpture from the Capitoline Museums collection and precious artefacts found in the excavations of the site. The concerts, mostly dedicated to jazz and film music, take place every Fri and Sat evening in the Sala Macchine, Via Ostiense 106. Z dance Bolzano Ballet du Grand Théatre de Genève. 12 Nov. In Cendrillon, choreography by Michel Kelemenis. Guest choreographer at Geneva’s Ballet du Grand Théatre, Kelemenis directs his own company which is based in Marseille. Here, he has rewritten Sergei Prokofiev’s ballet Cinderella transporting the heroine to a glittering forest and replacing the good fairy with five charms in the shape of fauns. The contemporary French choreographer creates the atmosphere of an uneasy dream, in which everyone finds himself faced with his own fantasies and utopian desires. Teatro Comunale, tel. 0471053800. Akram Khan Company. 24 Nov. In Vertical Road, choreography by Khan. Performed by a world-class cast of dancers from across Asia, Europe and the Middle East, this new work by the acclaimed Anglo-Indian dancer and choreographer features a specially commissioned score by long-term collaborator Nitin Sawhney. The piece draws inspiration from universal myths of angels that symbolise “ascension”: the road between the earthly and the spiritual. Teatro Comunale, tel. 0471053800.
Milan Balletto del Teatro alla Scala. 9 Oct-13 Nov. In Onegin, choreography by John Cranko, with Roberto Bolle/Massimo Murru. Based on the famous work by Pushkin, Onegin calls for the most expressive acting as well as dancing, and Cranko turns up the emotions in each scene, climaxing in the final pas de deux between Onegin and Tatiana. Teatro alla Scala, tel. 0272003744, www.teatroallascala.org. Alonzo King/Lines Ballet. 16-21 Nov. In an evening of works choreographed by Alonzo King. Alonzo King, artistic director of San Francisco-based Lines Ballet, founded the company in 1982, combining cultural traditions and classical ballet. King, who expresses his belief that dance is an internationally interpreted language brings a message of global unity, and he does so with his ensemble of 12 excellent, academically-trained, athletic dancers. The line-up of works is a selection of King’s most successful, including Rasa, featuring a music score by Zakir Hussain and Kala Ramnath, with tabla music and vocals, Migration, which is a portrayal of evolution from primal sludge through birds, mammals, and humans, Dust and Light, evoking ideas of mortality and transcendence, The Moroccan Project, a flowing suite of images that might be in an old palace in the midst of parched plains or desert. Teatro Puccini, tel. 0200660606.
Naples Compagnia Virgilio Sieni. 17-28 Nov. In Tristi Tropici, choreography by Virgilio Sieni. This work is freely inspired by Tristes Tropiques by Claude Lévi-Strauss. But Sieni does not produce a literal transcription: on stage are two female couples and a blind girl. Figures appear as undefined

shadows, opaque visions, couples huddling together in memory of their lost unity. The three-part work conveys tenderness and lasting nostalgia, and fosters the sense of what the ethnologist described as “The West’s lost opportunity of remaining female”. Teatro Mercadante, 0815513396.
Reggio Emilia The Cherkaoui/Maqoma Double Bill Project. 13, 14 Nov. In Southern Comfort and Bound. This programme of two powerful duets brings together three long-time friends and creative collaborators. Southern Comfort, choreographed by Gregory Maqoma, and Bound, by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, are performed by Maqoma and Shanell Winlock. South African-born Maqoma’s widely acclaimed Southern Comfort, is a humorous and moving work that exposes the physical and emotional connections we build with the people and space around us. Described as “Dramatic, passionate and humorous”, it exposes the power games people play, thanks also to the dynamic interaction of Maqoma and compatriot dancer Winlock. The extraordinary chemistry of their dance partnership is also evident in Bound, choreographed by renowned Flemish-Moroccan choreographer Cherkaoui. With the dancers he explores the notion of how we are bound to ourselves and our desires, to our heritage and to one another. The duets feature original music performed live by an international ensemble of musicians. Teatro Cavallerizza, tel. 0522458811, www.iteatri.re.it.
Rome Emanuel Gat/Roy Assaf. 13 Nov. In Winter Variations, choreography by Emanuel Gat/Roy Assaf. For Romaeuropa festival. A study in heterosexual male bonding, Winter Variations is the latest work from Israeli choreographer Gat, and represents the continuation of themes explored in his previous work, Winter Voyage. Set to a soundtrack ranging from Gustav Mahler to Riyad Al-Sunbati, the work is an intimate duet performed on a vast stage. Co-created and performed with regular collaborator Roy Assaf, with whom Gat shares a rare physical telepathy. Auditorium Conciliazione, Via della Conciliazione 3. For booking and information tel. 800904560, www.auditoriumconciliazione.com.
Turin Les Ballets C. de la B. 12-13 Nov. In Gardenia, choreography by Alain Platel and Frank Van Laecke. Inspired by the penetrating film Yo soy asi, in which the closing of a transvestite cabaret in Barcelona offers us a glimpse into the private lives of a group of ageing cabaret artists. The idea came about when transsexual actress Vanessa Van Durme collected a number of transsexual and transvestite friends in order to win over directors Alain Platel and Frank Van Laecke and composer Steven Prengels for a unique project. The protagonists poignantly tell of their existence between the genders, but the work is really about ageing, about hope and cherished or lost illusions. American Academy in Rome. 21 Oct-10 Dec: exhibition entitled Betty Woodman: Roman Fresco/Pleasures and Places featuring selected recent works in ceramic and on canvas. British School at Rome. 10 Nov: lecture in architectural history by Vaughan Hart entitled Inigo Jones and the Architecture of Temperance (18.00). 18 Nov-4 Dec: opening of the Fine Arts Exhibition entitled Fugitive Mirror. Working with the Marshall Collection by artist Andrew Hazewinkel in response to the late 19th-century glass plate negatives of antique sculpture in the Marshall Collection, BSR Library & Archive.
Fugitive Mirror is an exhibition by Australian artist Andrew Hazewinkel, which mines the climate-controlled world of the British School at Rome’s photo archive, presenting us a shimmering world of layered, fugitive images excavated from a forgotten history. In 2006 while Hazewinkel was Australia Council for the Arts resident artist at the BSR, he began a visual survey of the 630 glass plate negatives comprising the Marshall Collection. Since then, working between Rome and Melbourne, he has been uncovering the rich story and idiosyncratic world of John Marshall and Edward Perry Warren. From 1905 to 1928 John Marshall was European agent to New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art playing a central role in the assembly of its Greek and Roman collections. Before this, between 1894 and 1904, he and partner Edward Perry Warren were responsible for assembling the Boston Museum of Fine Arts collection of Greek and Roman art. Working from Rome, Marshall commissioned photographers to capture images of antiquities, as they came onto the market. With these images he prepared dossiers for consideration by the acquisition boards of the MET, the BMFA and other important collecting institutions. These early photographic images document a variety of objects; terracottas, marbles, bronzes, as well as works crafted of ivory, bone and silver; many are now considered masterpieces of antiquity, some are considered master works of forgery. Working with materials that range from sandpaper to silver leaf, from linen to sliced agate, Hazewinkel has created an extensive body of new work in response to this important but little known collection.
P
Onto the textured surfaces of large sheets of infinitely black sandpaper, he applies silver and aluminium leaf, merging sculptural portraits from the past with faces he sees in the metro. Shimmering spectral forms emerge, hovering confidently in an uncertain space somewhere between painting, drawing and sculpture. Digitised, rescaled details, cropped from the original images are screen-printed onto silvered linen in a process of image-making that reasserts the original object-ness and perhaps the spirit of the antique material. Employing a playful surrealist approach to collage; Hazewinkel works onto photographic prints, replacing the lost heads of marble figures with sliced agate he purchases from the Porta Portese market. Hazewinkel combines the visual languages of the museum and the workshop in an illuminated vitrine in which he presents his curated selection of the glass negatives, offering an insight to the domestic and working lives of Marshall and Warren. Fugitive Mirror explores relationships between photography and sculpture, the original and the copy, the authentic and the fake. Opera Notes The last production in Rome’s current opera season has just been cancelled. Instead here are two valid alternatives; one dedicated to some of Vivaldi vocal works sung by the mezzosoprano Marie-Nicole Lemieux accompanied by the Ensemble Matheus; the other a concert entitled VIVA V.E.R.D.I which, as its name suggests, is dedicated to Verdi solos for a baritone, sung here by Giovanni Meoni. a Lecouvreur di Francesco Al Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, come ultimo titolo della stagione, doveva andare in scena Adriana Cilea; purtroppo è stata cancellata per i ben noti e tristi problemi economici e tagli ai finanziamenti che affliggono le istituzioni musicali italiane. Paolo Di Nicola
