editorial Coming to live W in Rome Mary Wilsey

Expats living in Rome are well-organised today, but perhaps life is not as carefree as it was 25 years ago

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has always been the favoured place to work.

Students on transfer from California to Rome.

hen we first started Wanted in Rome in the mid-1980s English-speaking expats were easy to identify and the city was a place where foreigners could lead a relatively cheap, leisurely and pleasant way of life. The English-speaking community was small and reasonably homogenous, made up mainly of British, Americans, Irish priests and religious, a handful of Australians and Canadians. Jobs in the United Nations organisations and the institutions that evolved around the Vatican were the most prized. Cinecittà still attracted film makers. English au pairs were still sought after by Italian families, the British Council was still the place you could read English newspapers and borrow books. The English College was where you were invited for the Christmas pantomime and the Anglican Centre was still perched in its attic home in Palazzo Doria, itself a major centre of that expatriate world. Much has changed since then. Expats no longer cluster in the historic centre, where housing is now expensive, but have spread out along the Via Cassia, Via Aurelia, Via Prenestina, Via Tiburtina and beyond the Grande Raccordo Anulare. Any school or church will tell you that its students and worshippers now come from all over the world, that they are in Rome for short periods before moving on to another foreign country. There is a large and ever-changing foreign student population, on Erasmus university exchanges, on semesters abroad from a college in the United States or just travelling and teaching English to make ends meet along the way. On the edges of this foreign community are those who have settled down to stay forever, often married to Italians, but who still hanker after home food, home newspapers, home television programmes and who still hope their children will pick up something of the education and culture back home. A generation ago there were hardly any families with dual-nationality children; now there are many. The parents may still long for Marmite, Vegemite or peanut butter but their children, who speak Italian as their first language, miss pasta and Lavazza coffee if they go “home” for higher education or to work. Expats today are less forgiving of the city’s short-comings, more demanding of a higher level of service in housing, education, health and welfare. They may find that living in Rome isn’t as easy as they thought. The prices are not what they imagined, housing is no longer cheap, inefficient telecommunications are simply not acceptable, job opportunities are few and although the city is more beautiful than ever it is not always a welcoming place to live. The new generation of expats has however realised for the most part that it is necessary to speak Italian, that cultural differences are important to understand and that it is useful to have safety nets to make their stay less stressful. The supplement to this edition of Wanted in Rome gives a glimpse of just how well-organised this English-speaking community has now become. In all sorts of ways expats have created support mechanisms to make their stay in Rome more pleasurable. On page 6 Cynthia Rockwell, a long-time expat herself, lists some strategies to make the culture shock of living in a foreign city less acute. They are all things that seem obvious now but are subjects that were hardly even thought about when we first started publishing. On the educational front 27 schools and universities are offering education for a new generation of multi-cultural, multi-lingual children, as well as job opportunities for English-speaking teachers and a ready social network for parents who are often on the move across the world. This impressive list tops any other European city, even Paris, and there are probably few other cities where foreigners of all nationalities have so strong a network of connections on which to base their stay abroad. ormerly a school, Palazzo Massimo alle Terme was opened as a museum in 1998 to house the overspill of antiquities languishing in the store rooms of the Museo Nazionale Romano which is set inside the ruins of the Roman baths of Diocletian, in front of Rome’s Termini railway station. The towering 19th century edifice in neo-classical style occupying a corner of Piazza del Cinquecento opposite the mother museum in the Diocletian Baths, is unjustly one of Rome’s lesser-known museums, attracting some 150,000 visitors per year. This is a mere drop in the visitor ocean, compared with the 1.7 million visitors to the Pantheon, the less than 800,000 to Castel S. Angelo and in excess of 500,000 to the Galleria Borghese. And yet Palazzo Massimo boasts exhibits that can rival any other world-class museum of antiquities and is run by a dynamic management team that regularly stages themed exhibitions to attract the crowds. FOREIGN COMMUNITY

Survival for expats Cynthia Rockwell

B

efore even embarking on this discussion, we must clarify terms: expatriates (expats) are people residing out of their native land for a variety of reasons; expatriots are people alienated from their own countries for other reasons. The categories overlap, but are by no means identical. Here, we are only talking about the first group. These remarks are also primarily addressed to people who have come to Rome without a ready-made institutional context or social entrée. They might be academics, aspiring artists, writers, chronic tourists, adventurers, foodies or whatever. Still, a sense of isolation and culture shock can affect all of the above, perhaps also the partners of those employed in embassies, international organisations, schools and businesses. So, how does one really begin to live in Rome? Anyone moving to a new town goes through this process, but here we have the complication of entering a new culture as well. So the first step is to: Learn Italian. Lessons are definitely a good idea, and there are numerous options. Free on-line instruction is now available, as well as many language schools that offer teachers and small groups where you might also find friends. Once you have a grasp of the basics, however, it’s important to plunge into speaking in the real world. Fortunately, Italians are forgiving about one’s mistakes (I’ve certainly made some howlers). With supermarkets proliferating, you might be tempted to avoid dealing with individual shopkeepers, but that won’t give you any practice. Other things can also help build vocabulary and comprehension, such as regularly trying to decipher the front page of any Italian newspaper, watching TV, even reading comic books, which are full of wonderful colloquial expressions. The next step is to Join Something. It could be a church, a gym, frequenting a pub, signing up for walking tours or volunteering for the worthy cause of your choice – there is even a group looking after the cat hospice in Largo Argentina. The idea is to build a network of people you know and like. This will not only expand your social circle but your new acquaintances might also have first-hand advice on various practical matters, such as house hunting, doctors and dentists, schools for your children, or even the best place to find various things you need. Who’d have guessed that salt used to be sold only at tobacconists? House hunting is confusing for newcomers because the listings are always given by city neighborhoods (quartieri), so you have to learn where they are and also decide where you’d like to be. The Expat Guide to Rome (with this issue) covers this aspect nicely, with short descriptions and maps indicating a few vital features: restaurants, pharmacies, gyms, etc. Needless to say, a place in the historic centre with a terrace 6

Cynthia Rockwell, who has lived in Rome for several decades, gives some practical advice for survival as an expat in Rome

and fabulous view costs the earth. Tradeoffs are usually necessary and depend on your personal priorities. Some of these are price, location, silence, public transport, proximity to a school, park or cultural activity. Safety is generally not a concern, though a certain caution is recommended late at night. For meeting a prospective landlord, treat it like a job interview. If you dress too casually, you could be considered a poor risk. Unwritten rules. Italy has lots of these, and it’s helpful to know a few so as not to appear too green. For instance, only gormless foreigners would order a cappuccino after lunch, but an espresso with a drop of milk (caffè macchiato) is OK. Another no-no is asking for parmesan cheese to go with seafood pasta. Clothing choices are also tricky: a woman’s fashion statement elsewhere might make her be taken for a streetwalker in Rome, with the attendant hassles. It’s also considered insulting to pour a bottle backhanded – a remnant from the days of poison rings. Medical help. Again, the support group you are building can be helpful here. Many embassies or organisations have listings of health-care resources, but obviously cannot recommend anyone in particular. Certainly, for emergencies you go to your nearest hospital, but finding a doctor or dentist you trust can involve some trial and error. Bureaucracy. Sigh. It’s a chore to obtain a permit to stay (permesso di soggiorno), but necessary to have one (see www.poliziadistato.it and click on stranieri), especially if you’re ever embroiled with the law, even for a traffic accident. Fortunately, the process has recently been slightly streamlined. It now involves going to a post office with a sportello amico or friendly counter. For a modest fee, you receive an application package, which you fill out and submit, paying additional fees. (Guard all these receipts with your life.) Once your application moves through the works, you’ll be called to your local police station for a specific day and hour. Take originals and extra photocopies of all relevant documents. You’ll be fingerprinted and told to check later to see whether your permesso has arrived. All this takes time and can be spinned out, if you can show that you’re trying. To offset bureaucratic stress, classical music lovers can always find solace on RAI’s radio station at FM 100.3, round the clock with no commercials. Clearly, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to settling into the Italian scene, but it is ultimately worth the effort. Keep at it – and treat yourself to a dish of authentic pasta (with or without parmesan, depending) every so often to remind yourself of where you are and why. 24 November 2010

Exhibition Reviews by Edith Schloss Betty Woodman. Roman Fresco / Pleasures and Places. Until 10 Dec. Betty Woodman is a pixie and a wizard. She is one of the most celebrated and articulate ceramicists of today. At the American Academy her big-bellied vases, jagged and chunky, work blithely as art objects, subtly held up by a deep perception and knowledge of history. Bold and fearless, large vessels as well as little pitchers, witty urns and cups, bronze garden benches and other sculptural utilities are presented in daring congregations. Here in Rome, specially made for the site, pale and clay vessels team on the ground before great loose painted flows of linen on the wall – frescoes of matissey colour and shape – forming a cheerful grand installation. It is meant as a greeting to Rome, less to its ancient solemnity, more to its remnants of festive charm. It reminds you of the elaborate papier maché and gesso structures for the “Cimea” erected by sculptors in the Baroque for special occasions. It appears like some kind of a sanctuary, a bright airy modern celebration. American Academy in Rome, Via Angelo Masina 5, tel. 0658461. 4V page 15 Sabina Mirri. Con caffé con panna. Until 26 Nov. At a different venue and in another American institution an exhibition brings to life Betty’s daughter, Francesca, who wanted to die young. Studying on the European honours programme of the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in Palazzetto Cenci in the 1970s she emerged as a fresh, extraordinarily gifted artist, executing drawings and photographs of wondrous sensibility. Among her friends of the same age was Sabina Mirri, now one of Rome’s most stimulating painters. I often saw the two girls huddling together on the doorsteps of the Maldoror bookshop in the rione Ponte, whispering softly, secretly and unendingly together. Dressed in thrift shop clothes, they also went to an old café to sip coffee and cream, something “Cesca” caught with her camera in witchy, delicately haunting images. Now, three decades later, Mirri has taken these photos of girlish wonder in the middle of a rough historical era, left to her by Francesca, and has created large, dusky, art décolike oils out of them. Then she photographed the canvases into little pictures she enhanced with touches of gouache. A garland of these – 40 of them – runs around the three walls of the central RISD exhibition space. The fourth wall is permanently decorated by a copy of the Guido Reni portrait of the unhappy Beatrice Cenci of the Renaissance, who is said to have lived in Palazzetto Cenci. And lo, underneath it now hangs a large pastel painting by Mirri to complete the installation in homage of her friend. It shines! It shows two pensive girls. One is listening with huge rabbit ears. The other, furtive, fey, is sitting next to a tiny full moon in glass. It is our Francesca, wearing her fairy queen crown. Rhode Island School of Design, Palazzetto Cenci, Piazza Cenci 56, tel. Sabina Mirri “Con caffé con panna” 068802490.

Etruria: Travel, history and itineraries in Central Italy by Mary Jane Cryan In this book Irish-American writer Mary Jane Cryan takes readers on yet another journey revealing new archaeological and artistic treasures, forgotten castles and monuments and surprising historical facts of the fascinating and still relatively undiscovered area north of Rome known as Tuscia or Etruria. Cryan introduces us to little-known sites, such as the spectacular Nymphaeum of Orte, which she says “will soon be as well known as the caves under Orvieto”, the recently discovered sanctuary of Demeter near Vetralla, the abandoned city of Monterano “often used as a set for horror films” and the abbey of S. Giusto in Tuscania. Digging into old archives produced forgotten stories about the Irish Denham family, who possessed large tracts of territory in northern Lazio in the 18th-19th century and the St Patrick’s brigade, Irish volunteers who fought with the papal army against the unification of Italy in 1860, as well as accounts of the pleasure trips taken in the area by Cardinal Henry Stuart, last of the ill-fated Stuart dynasty, ousted from the British throne largely because of its fervid Catholicism. Rome Gezz. Generazione Jazz. Roma Jazz Festival 2010. 11-30 Nov. Rome’s annual autumn jazz festival directed by Mario Ciampà presents the new generation of Italian jazz musicians and composers. Ciampà stands by his choice to offer a programme made up of many yet unknown names, “because to love jazz music” – he says – “means not only to host its more famous protagonists, but also to encourage young musicians, offering them tools and opportunity.” Auditorium Parco della Musica, Viale P. de Coubertin. Romaeuropa celebrates its 25th anniversary with a programme that features 20 national and three world premieres. One of the keys to the festival’s continuing success is probably the support of important cultural centres such as Rome’s Third University, the Accademia di S. Cecilia, the Filarmonica, the Galleria Nazionale d’ Arte Moderna as well as the city and the region. There is also a series of mini monothematic cycles dedicated to electronic music and visual arts. The original setting for the concerts features a selection of old machinery for electricity production as a

backdrop for masterpieces of ancient sculpture from the Capitoline Museums’ collection and precious artefacts found in the excavations of the site. The concerts, mostly dedicated to jazz and film music, take place every Fri and Sat evening in the famous “Sala Macchine” at 20.00 and at 22.00. For the first time in Rome, the Belarus Free Theatre will be on stage with Zone of Silence (28, 29 Nov) and Discover Love (30 Nov). The activity of this underground theatre company began in March 2005, during the second term of President Alexander Lukashenko, as an artistic means of resisting government pressure and censorship. Founded by playwrights Nikolai Khalezin and his wife, theatre producer Natalia Koliada, the team was subsequently joined by stage director Vladimir Scherban, who has produced the majority of Free Theatre performances. Under the current political system, Belarus Free Theatre has no official registration, no premises, nor any other facilities. From Jeroen Brouwers, directed by Guy Cassiers, with Dirk Roofthooft, for Romaeuropa Festival. The Flemish theatre director Guy Cassiers presents this multimedia theatre work created in collaboration with and performed by one of Flanders’ leading stage actors, Dirk Roofthooft. The solo performance

is based on Jeroen Brouwers’ 1981 autobiographical novel, Bezonken Rood, an account of his family’s internment in a Japanese prison camp during world war two. In 1943, the three-year-old Brouwers – along with his sister, mother, and grandmother – was imprisoned in the women’s camp, Tjideng, in present-day Jakarta. The author describes how his years in the camp permanently destroyed his relationship with his mother, comparing the loss of maternal affection with the disintegration of each subsequent love affair in adulthood. On a set designed to evoke a formal Japanese garden and framed by multiple live-feed video projections and laser-like lighting design, Cassiers stages Brouwers’ devastating story and creates an emotionally intense piece that is described as “a magnificent expression of love from a wounded man”. Opera Notes

The season opens at the Teatro dell’ Opera in Rome with a new production of Moïse et Pharaon by Pier’ Alli conducted by Riccardo Muti who, contrary to recent hopes, will not be the musical director. At La Scala in Milan Die Walküre by Richard Wagner opens the new season, the second opera of the four works in the Ring Cycle, which will be staged in its entirety over the next few years. Z dance Bolzano Akram Khan Company. 24 Nov. In Vertical Road, choreography by Khan. Performed by a world-class cast of dancers from across Asia, Europe and the Middle East, this new work by the acclaimed Anglo-Indian dancer and choreographer, features a specially commissioned score by long-term collaborator Nitin Sawhney. The piece draws inspiration from universal myths of angels that symbolise “ascension”: the road between the earthly and the spiritual. Teatro Comunale, tel. 0471053800.

Modena Croatian National Ballet Theatre. 4, 5 Dec. In The Nutcracker, choreography by Waczlaw Orlykowsky. The classical Christmas ballet has traditionally been on the repertoire of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb for Christmas holidays ever since its first staging in December 1931. This production is a reconstruction of the show that was staged in 1970 by the choreographer Waczlaw Orlykowsky, whose work has left deep traces in the Croatian dance world. Teatro Comunale Pavarotti, tel. 0592033010.

Naples Compagnia Virgilio Sieni. 17-28 Nov. In Tristi Tropici, choreography by Virgilio Sieni. This work is freely inspired by Tristes Tropiques by Claude Lévi-Strauss. But Sieni does not produce a literal transcription: on stage are two female couples and a blind girl. Figures appear as undefined shadows, opaque visions, couples huddling together in memory of their lost unity. The threepart work conveys tenderness and lasting nostalgia, and fosters the sense of what the ethnologist described as “The West’s lost opportunity of remaining female”. Teatro Mercadante, 0815513396. Repeated in Reggio Emilia 5 Dec. Teatro Cavallerizza, tel. 0522458811, www.iteatri.re.it.

Trento Vertigo Dance Company. 7 Dec. In Mana – Vessel of Light, choreography by Noa Wertheim. The somewhat obscure description of this work by the Isreali eco-friendly choreographer Wertheim refers to a quotation from the Zohar, the group of books that are the base of Jewish

mystical thought known as Kabbalah. This new work brings to the stage a quiet and restrained strength. The silhouette of the house on stage symbolises the borderline that separates the exterior from the interior, the attempt of an individual to reconnect with himself. Wertheim’s choreography stems from a movement composed of a spiral structure that is transformed as it gathers energy and momentum. Teatro Sociale, tel. 0461239917.

Turin Les Ballets de Monte-C Carlo. 4-15 Dec. In Cinderella, choreography by Jean-Christophe Maillot. Maillot’s Cinderella

(first staged in 1999) closely follows Charles Perrault’s original tale. Set to a modified version of Prokofiev’s original score, the ballet retains its sense of fairy-tale magic with a surprise ending and a set Maillot describes as “an empty book of memories.” But it’s a bit darker, and reinterprets certain characters, most notably by making Cinderella’s birthmother and her fairy godmother one and the same. Perhaps the biggest change is that Cinderella remains barefoot throughout the ballet, suggesting her simple beauty. Instead of glass slippers, a visual effect makes her feet appear to sparkle and shine. Teatro Regio, tel. 0118815241, www.teatroregio.torino.it.
