ART

Walking Rome’s galleries Edith Schloss new artwork by their friends, Ruggero Savinio, Ceccobelli, Cucchi, Dessi, etc. rested in glass boxes alongside in grateful company. In the face of crass Italian Pop culture, this was a reassuring offering. Its private and public message, its plainness, is intense and moving. In Via Monserrato 121, there was Bianco-Nero, a delectable occasion to savour some sparkling examples from late 20th to our own century in black and white by vanished or living sculptors and painters. Working with abstraction, without the accent and seduction of colour, Prampolini, Sironi, Strazza, Avenali, Conciliazione, Verna and so on, were united in this cuttingly intelligent multiform grouping in a particularly handsome space. Along the same street at number 40 is Andrea Aquilanti with a film of what happened around a Belle Epoque painting of an empty park projected on an installation of Belle Epoque elegant real furniture and copy of same painting – a complex and shimmering evocative effort. Giacomo Balla. Oils from 1901. The Futurist Balla (1871-1951) is showing in Via Monserrato 30 in clever vivaciously brushed small oils, plainly figurative, enjoying the depiction of ordinary life and tradespeople in Roman streets. (Until 31 December) In Vienna in Vicolo Sforza Cesarini the work of naughty wouldbe tough young artists – it’s our sacred duty to eradicate all holy art history that’s been stuffed down our throats – is overshadowed by some huge prints of masterworks and madonnas overlaid with broomstick smears and marks by the veteran Arnulf Rainer. Vienna, ancient and rich, has a need to appear new and despoiled. There is energy and sincerity in this concerted and fluent effort. (Until 6 January) So here is a sampling of galleries flaunting saleable or near unsaleable goodies, but it’s only less than a half of it. Happy browsing.

O

n a Saturday afternoon in November, when I harmlessly ventured forth to sample a gallery or two in my ancient papal neighbourhood in the heart of baroque Rome and related Trastevere, I found it absolutely teeming with reliable up-to-date ventures. “Anything good?” asked a timid, not very knowledgeable, friend. The question was beside the point. The whole field was bustling and bristling with vividly interesting shows, solo or group, and the inevitable installations, gimmicky or not. I start with the most entrancing. Walking on the other side of the Tiber, beyond the traffic avalanches on either strand, you move under huge swirling clouds, densities of birds, slowly winding and unwinding in secret instinctive patterns, starlings in migration. Tourists and the sensitive turn up their faces to watch, riveted by the bittersweet feats of the secret rules of nature. The rustle and cries of the birds follow you into the raw spaces of a large gallery in S. Francesco di Sales, once an old stable, a forgotten workshop or a horseshoeing smithy, where the wonder outside is gathered and expressed into another intensity of dimension. Elvio Chiricozzi, one of the oldest young painters here, has given extraordinarily free reign to innumerable numbers of tiny sharp cut-out birds, clustering them and dispersing them against vaults and high spaces. The blackest of black, they join and scatter in rhythmic pulse all over a stark shimmer of whiteness. Joyous mysterious tapestries, echoing and celebrating the real sky events, they are an epic poem to the unmutable. In a remote niche a beautifully precise drawing sits still. It is of a street boy watching quietly – bewitched witness or believing poet. In the nearby Lorcan O’Neill gallery American artist Kiki Smith delineates the woes of family and social conditions in purposely clumsy bronzes and elaborate thin drawings on weathered oriental papers. They are bittersweet and sturdy little sagas, as if stitched in an old fashioned chamber or attic, baring and accentuating feelings and heartrending events with an acute up-to-date toughness. Back on the other side of the river at Casa della Letture was a touching exposition on Romanesco, the daily Roman way of talking we hear in old and young voices, in old and new tradition, all around us still. Pages of poems by local living poets with the typical explicit consonants (“Bbbbbona” for lush woman, for instance) grace the walls, and 8 December 2010

Towards elections… Cont. from page 3.

lead and how their coalition will be composed. At the moment, the openly gay, Catholic and left-wing governor of Apulia, Nichi Vendola, is the most popular choice, but the mainstream Democratic Party is worried that Vendola would frighten off the essential centrist vote. If there really are elections early next year, then the left will have to get organised quickly. For the immediate future, we can be pretty sure that the budget will pass and that it will be less austere than it would have been with a solid government in place. On 14 December the most likely outcome is a vote of confidence in the senate, where Berlusconi still has a good majority, and of no confidence in the chamber of deputies. Berlusconi would like to dissolve one house only, which in theory is possible but in practice is not. There is a small possibility that Fini’s FLI might abstain, which would give Berlusconi a stay of execution, and there is a small possibility that the centrist UDC would step in and support the government. The constitutional court will take days and maybe weeks to reach a decision on immunity for the prime minister. After the votes in parliament there will be discussions and then with no plausible alternative the president of the republic, Giorgio Napolitano, will call elections for the spring which Berlusconi, leading a PdL/Lega coalition could well win, at least in the chamber of deputies. If he loses his majority in the senate, then the country would be ungovernable as Italy has never had a hung parliament. And if both the court and the votes in parliament go against him, he always has a new villa in friendly Antigua. Better a gilded exile than the likelihood of conviction in Italy. Sun and Mon closed. NEW Letizia Battaglia. Vintages 1972-1 1993. 16 Dec-23 Jan 2011. Battaglia began to photograph the Sicilian Mafia in 1974. As the photography director of L’Ora, one of Palermo’s daily newspapers, she or one of her assistants was present at the scene of every major crime in Palermo until shortly before the paper folded in 1990. During that period, a new, bloody group within Cosa Nostra, from the town of Corleone, wiped out the traditional bosses from Palermo in a war that cost the lives of about 1,000 people. But Battaglia’s pictures of ordinary Palermo life are an important complement to her Mafia reportage and this exhibition, featuring some 30 works, highlights her eye for beauty as well as for the dark side of life in her beloved Sicily. s.t. foto libreria galleria, Via degli Ombrellari 25, tel. 0664760105. 11.00-20.00. The dual artistic and archaeological approach of this exhibition illustrates the way in which ancient monuments, excavations, museums and artistic institutions were able to encourage the arts and art education and spread the love for classical art throughout Europe during the 18th century. A large section of the exhibition is dedicated to the training syllabus for artists in Rome and the way this model was spread by the Accademia Romana di S. Luca, the Academy of S. Fernando in Madrid and the Museo Riminaldi in Ferrara. Another section addresses the educational role of museums of Roman antiquity. Rome 1 Q page 15 Natale all’Auditorium. 4 Dec-9 Jan 2011. The

Auditorium’s annual Christmas Fair is back with its usual range of activities and offerings. For over a month the outside space around Rome’s auditorium is transformed into a kind of a Nordic village, with many activities especially geared for children. The pedestrian area features 40 illuminated fir trees and Father Christmas’s house where children can post their letters to Santa and pose for a photograph. There is also a drawing competition with a Christmas theme for primary school children. The Auditorium’s most popular

offering, the open-air ice-skating rink is back, as is a rather exclusive Christmas Fair with an interesting and sophisticated range of crafts for sale. Over 30 food and chocolate stalls, as well as puppet shows and exhibitions make up the backdrop for an interesting programme of cultural events that include concerts, drama, and a Gospel and Spiritual music festival (1931Dec) with musicians and singers from all over the world. The original setting for the concerts features a selection of old machinery for electricity production as a backdrop for masterpieces of ancient sculpture from the Capitoline Museums’ collection and precious artefacts found in the excavations of the site. The concerts, mostly dedicated to jazz and film music, take place every Fri and Sat evening in the famous “Sala Macchine” at 20.00 and at 22.00. Tickets cost €8 and include a glass of wine. The Nuova Consonanza association is the oldest and largest contemporary music organisation in Rome. It is currently offering its 47th annual musical marathon, entitled Romantik in collaboration with the American Academy in Rome. A variety of concerts, installations, exhibitions, and video projects are featured and performed throughout the Villa Aurelia and its grounds. Performances include a number of new works by Italian and American composers. A separate but connected initiative (from 13 to 17 Dec), promoted in collaboration with the Accademia di S. Milan

Compagnia Maggioranza. 14-19 Dec. In Coppelia, choreography by Eugene Polyakov. First staged in 1870, this ballet is a classical family favourite as it is charming, funny, and full of humour and ballet mime. It is often performed by small ballet companies because it doesn’t require a large cast of dancers. Teatro Comunale, tel. 051529958, 051529014, www.tcbo.it. Also in Florence (22-24 Dec) at Teatro Comunale, tel. 0552779350.

Balletto del Teatro alla Scala. 16-31 Dec. In Swan Lake, choreography by Rudolf Nureyev. This beautiful version of “Swan Lake” was created by Nureyev, who had danced the male lead role many times, on which he had strong views. He was not satisfied with the normal ending – which he felt was untrue to the tragic undertones of the music – and he wanted to build up the role of the hero to make a proper counterpart to the ballerina. Accordingly, he made his Prince in a dark mood from the very beginning, gave him an extra dance with his friends, and adopted a variation on the ending with the Prince drowned in the overflowing lake. Teatro alla Scala, tel. 0272003744, www.teatroallascala.org.

Csilla Nagy. 17 Dec. In More than three Episodes, choreography by Csilla Nagy. This emerging artist is the Fringe Award winner of Fringe Pécs 2010. She graduated from the Hungarian Dance Academy in 2009 and has won a number of prizes with her experimental choreographies all over the world. She is a regular guest of international contemporary dance festivals and has participated in various international co-productions. Spazio Pim/Off, tel. 0254102612.

Incanto, choreography by Mauro Bigonzetti. Teatro Argentina, Largo di Torre Argentina, tel. 06684001, www.teatrodiroma.net. 3 Z page 15 Bad Boys of Dance. 7-12 Dec. In Rock the Ballet which was created by Rasta Thomas with his wife Adrienne Canterna in 2008. It has enjoyed much public acclaim and critical disapproval as it toured the world over the past two years. Thomas describes it as a “dance show that is athletic, sexy, entertaining and fun. A high energy dance show that was created for dance lovers and first time theatre goers.” Thomas reveals that his secret is simple: great dancing to great music. However the feeling is that there is no idea other than crowd pleasing behind Rock the Ballet, which offers a disjointed series of episodes to a string of wellknown pop and rock songs. (Naturally there is a Michael Jackson medley.) The video images by William Cusick are overly literal, or brightly meaningless with frequent karaokelike projection of lyrics. Teatro Olimpico, Piazza G. da Fabriano 17, tel. 063265991, www.teatroolimpico.it.

Balletto del Teatro dell’Opera. 22-30 Dec. In Serata Roland Petit: L’Arlesienne and Carmen. With guest artists Eleonora Abbagnato, Benjamin Pech, Paolina Semionova, Robert Tewsley. Teatro dell’Opera, Piazza B. Gigli, tel. 0648160255, www.operadiroma.it.

Trento Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake.

w Bourne/Back k Row w Productions.. 8-12 1Z page 15 Matthew Dec. Swan Lake, choreography by Matthew Bourne. When this work was first staged 15 years ago, it created a big stir in the world of ballet with its provocative reworking of one of the most loved ballets of all time. It has since become the longest running ballet in the London’s West End and on Broadway collecting over 30 international theatre awards, and continues to tour the world. The most talked-about innovation in this production is the casting of a male dancer in the coveted role of Odette/Odile known as “the Swan”. “The idea of a male swan makes complete sense to me,” says Bourne, “the strength, the beauty, the enormous wingspan of these creatures suggests to me the musculature of a male dancer more readily than a ballerina in her white tutu.” Teatro Verdi, Via Ghibellina 101, tel. 055212320. www.teatroverdionline.it.

Genoa Ballet de Lorraine. 11-19 Dec. In Petrushka, L’Apres Midi d’un Faune, Les Noces, choreographies by Fokine, Nijinksy. Based in Nancy since 1978, this company is considered one of the leading dance companies in France. It has quite recently evolved from performing strictly classical repertoire to a more contemporary approach under artistic director Didier Deschamps, receiving much critical acclaim. However to honour the centenary this year of the Ballet Russes, it dedicates this programme to some of the Russians’ best loved works. Teatro Carlo Felice, tel. 010589329.

Hungarian State Folk Ensemble. 18 Dec. In Bartók Trilogy. The Hungarian State Folk Ensemble is regarded as one of the best of its genre in Hungary. It was established in 1951 to collect and play authentic folk music and to preserve the Hungarian folk dances and traditional costumes of Hungarian-inhabited areas. The ensemble is currently The Bad Boys of Dance perform Rock the Ballet at Teatro Olimpico.

performing a series of three interrelated dance theatre shows called Bartók Trilogy. The artistic creators of the trilogy wish to present and justify the unity in which the various historical layers of culture – from older traditional folk art to contemporary art – thrive and co-operate with each other. And Bartók’s journey from folk music to contemporary music, from the collective to the individual, serves as a model of this series. The programme states that tradition is a living and progressive phenomenon and that contemporary art forms can only be understood in the context of change and continuity. The Ensemble consists of 30 dancers, 14 members of the Gypsy Orchestra and five members of the Hungarian Folk Orchestra. The choreographies are all based on authentic dances, some of them were collected in isolated villages with dance elements dating back hundreds of years. Teatro Sociale, tel. 0461239917.

Turin Les Ballets de Monte-C Carlo. 18-23 Dec. In La Belle, choreography by Jean-Christophe Maillot. Yet another reworking of a classical work by Maillot, who created this particular Sleeping Beauty for his company in 2001. Set to Tchaikovsky’s score, Maillot has delved into the psychological aspects of Charles Perrault’s tale and this ballet, a meeting of classical and contemporary dance, makes no claim to follow the traditional story. Indeed, if one reads the programme notes, which is the only way to understand the rather confusing story, the work is full of all sorts of nasties. We learn that the prince’s mother, who turns out to be a man, is in fact an ogress who not only kills her husband, but intends to throw Beauty into a boiling cauldron of toads and snakes. Happily for everyone, she or he (as the case may be) is accidentally devoured by the beasts. Teatro Regio, tel. 0118815241, www.teatroregio.torino.it.

Venice Royal Ballet of Flanders. 18-22 Dec. In The Sleeping Beauty, choreography by Marcia Haydée. Building on the solid foundation of Petipa and Tchaikovsky, Haydée, has chosen to concentrate on the dramatic content of the work. She has added depth to the character of Carabosse, transforming her into a much rounder character who actually carries the piece. Nonetheless, Haydée’s Sleeping Beauty is also faithful to Petipa in the sense that it represents a struggle between good and evil, and it is Carabosse, the personification of evil, who is eventually defeated. New company director Kathryn Bennetts, and Marcia Haydée have aimed to restore this well-known fairytale ballet to its former glory, whilst answering the question of why a company that privileges a contemporary repertoire, should choose to revisit this classical romantic piece. The reason is, as Marc Haegeman puts it in Danceviewtimes, that this is not an “old-fashioned and dusty museum piece” but a work that “still inspires today’s artists as well as audiences. (…) And what’s more, it takes an academically schooled company like the Royal Ballet of Flanders – the only one left in Belgium – to dance it.” Teatro La Fenice, tel. 0412424, www.lafenice.it.

Opera Notes The opera season at Salerno’s Teatro Municipale ends with Francesca da Rimini by Riccardo Zandonia and Verdi’s Luisa Miller, conducted by Daniel Oren, who has announced that in “his” theatre he will only invite directors with the greatest regard for the libretto and music. These two works were composed 75 years apart (Luisa Miller in 1849 and Francesca da Rimini in 1914) and the difference in style that separates them is very evident.

23 Nov-19 Dec. With Massimo Giuliani, Gabriella Silvestri, Sergio Fiorentini directed by Silvio Giordani. This delightful comedy – its original title being Wife begins at Forty – was premièred by Ray Cooney’s Theatre of Comedy in 1985. The plot concerns Linda, a wife and mother about to turn 40. She sees not only a lack of adventure in her daily life, but also realises that no matter how hard she tries, all the excitement in her marriage has run flat. The play is about Linda’s midlife crisis and the effects that it has on her friends, family and neighbours. In Italian. Teatro Manzoni, Via Monte Zebio 14/c, tel. 063223634. 2 X page 15 Taxi a due piazze by Ray Cooney. 14-19 Dec. Directed by Emilia Miscio, with the Compagnia Attori in Parte. The original title of this 1983 comedy is Run for Your Wife. It’s the story of London taxi driver John Smith, with two wives, two lives and a very precise schedule for juggling them both. With one wife at home in Streatham and another at home in Wimbledon. Trouble brews when Smith is mugged and ends up in hospital, where both of his addresses surface, causing both the Streatham and Wimbledon police to investigate. In Italian. Teatro S. speech, movement, song, music, video and the use of stage machinery as a means of expressing the story. Commedia is a performance by two soloists who enter into dialogue as a way of expressing the many contrasting facets of man’s vision and his voyage through life on earth. In Italian.
