CHRISTMAS
The Vatican Christmas tree Margaret Stenhouse
This year's Christmas tree comes from Bressanone in Alto Adige
T
he monumental Christmas tree that rises every year in the centre of St Peter’s Square has become such an essential part of Rome’s festive season that many people think it has always been an integral part of the Vatican Christmas celebrations. But in actual fact, the tree has only appeared beside the more typically Italian Christmas crib relatively recently. Previously the Holy See considered it to be a foreign tradition, rooted in paganism, belonging to the culture of the Protestant peoples of the north, and therefore an inappropriate symbol to be featured in the heart of Roman Catholicism. The first Vatican Christmas tree was introduced by Polish Pope John Paul II in 1982 and aroused quite a few initial rumblings of disapproval. Legend has it that this first tree was gifted by a Polish peasant who brought it to Rome on his lorry but other sources claim it was actually an Italian tree. Be that as it may, the custom caught on and ever since then European provinces with available forest and a strong Catholic tradition have vied with each other for the honour of supplying the tree that will stand guard over the nativity scene beside the obelisk in the centre of St Peter’s Square. This year’s tree comes from the Luson forest near the mountain resort of Bressanone in the Italian province of Alto Adige. A 30m-tall spruce of some 80 summers, the cost of its transportation to Rome is financed, as customary, by the donating region. The tree is delivered at the beginning of December and last year Pope Benedict XVI turned the lights on by flipping a switch inside the Apostolic Palace overlooking St Peter’s Square, but past ceremonies have assigned the honour to young people of special merit, such as 11-year-old Juergen Lengauer, who had saved his two-year-old brother from drowning and was chosen to light the 2005 seven-tonne Austrian pine from Eferding, near Linz. In all events, the tree-lighting ceremony is a colourful affair, attended by crowds of sightseers and folk-costumed dancers and musicians 22 December 2010
from the donating area. In the exceptionally wet December of 2008, with the Tiber threatening to wash over the nearby bridges, the pouring rain did not deter the hundreds of carol-singing pilgrims who had accompanied the colossal red spruce from Gutenstein in the Piesting Valley of Austria, while a young member of the region’s Altenburg choir flicked on the 1,500 led lights installed by Vatican electricians and technicians. Over the past 28 years, the majority of trees have come from the mountains of Italy, with the Sila region of Calabria claiming the record in 2006 for the tallest tree ever – a 32m-tall silver fir weighing nine tonnes that had to be partially transported by helicopter. In addition to Austria, other contributing European regions that have sent trees over the past ten years include Transylvania in Romania, Gorski Kotar in Croatia and the Ardennes in Wallonia, Belgium. The 2003 and 2004 trees came, respectively, from the Valle d’Aosta in the Italian Alps and from Pinzolo in the Dolomites, two northern Italian areas dear The Christmas to Pope John Paul II, who liked to holiday among the mountains. tree is universally A couple of years ago the Vatican became sensitive to regarded as criticisms from environmental a symbol of peace, groups and green-minded citizens who protested against the but the one sacrifice of these noble secular in St Peter’s Square trees, chopped down for what they considered futile purposes. Last year’s 100-year-old spruce from Belgium was hailed as an environmentally-friendly tree because it was felled as part of a project to reintroduce and encourage the growth of traditional native trees and plants. The Christmas tree is universally seen as a symbol of peace, but the Vatican tree has also been the cause of bitter protests and controversy. During the papacy of Pope John Paul II in Jubilee Year 2000, the tree was presented by the xenophobic governor of the Austrian province of Carinthia, Joerg Haider, a professed admirer of Hitler, who arrived with a delegation of 250 people and was granted a private papal audience. The Vatican justified the event by saying that the donation from Carinthia had been decided in 1997, before Haider became governor, but this was not enough to appease angry demonstrators who clashed with riot police in the streets of Rome. Rome’s Jewish shopkeepers turned their lights off in protest at the moment of the tree-lighting ceremony and the tree itself was put under a 24-hour armed guard in case it was vandalised. Ten years on this unpleasant incident is largely forgotten. The Bressanone tree is expected to generate nothing but goodwill and the citizens of the town are thrilled at the prospect of their tree adorning St Peter’s Square. “We are very honoured to be giving this year’s tree,” said a spokesperson from Bressanone town hall. “We feel we have a special bond with Pope Benedict, because he’s come here on holiday. In fact, we’ve made him an honorary citizen.” The gift of the tree will be personalised with 300 woven straw stars, a typical Christmas tree decoration used in the German-speaking Tyrol regions, especially created by the nimble fingers of the women of the Bressanone Movimento Cattolico. HISTORY
Christmas in ancient Rome Alessandro Ciccarese
B
usy preparing for the festivities, it is likely that many of us don’t realise that a number of Christmas traditions have followed us from ancient Rome. Even during the Roman Empire it was customary to exchange gifts on the occasion of the Saturnalia, a celebration in honour of the god Saturn, from 17 to 23 December. The origin of this festival is uncertain: some experts suggest that it is associated with the birthday of the god Saturn on 17 December and the construction of the temple in his honour between 501 and 498 BC. There is another hypothesis that it coincides with celebrations to mark the beginning of the winter solstice which in ancient Rome fell on 25 December. Typical gifts exchanged included wax candles, small images or terracotta dolls called sigillaria, sweets and dried or exotic fruit. In Book 14 of his epigrams the Latin poet Martial cites other examples of gifts that were offered during the Saturnalia: written tablets, dice, moneyboxes, combs, toothpicks, a hat, a hunting knife, an axe, different kinds of lights, perfumes, a pig, a sausage, a parrot, tables, drinking glasses, spoons, items of clothing, statues, masks, books and domestic animals. Food also played its part. Nowadays on Christmas Day we are accustomed to eating certain sweets and cakes that have entered into the Italian tradition, and others of exclusively regional origin. Most of these have flour as their main ingredient, just as they did in ancient Rome. Even Pliny the Elder recorded that at the festival Natalis Solis Invicti “frittelle natalizie di farinata”, a kind of sacred Christmas crepe or pancake dedicated to the god Saturn, were prepared. If today panettone reigns supreme among the sweets it is as well to remember that in ancient Rome it was pangiallo that had pride of place at table. Perhaps pangiallo got its name because once coated in an eggpaste and baked it develops a wonderful golden crust, or perhaps because it was originally made from a yellowish flour mixed with sultanas and dried figs. Later a white flour mixed with cocoa powder was used which gave a darker colour. A predecessor of pangiallo could have been melatello, a simple sweet made primarily The history of Christmas from flour and acqua melata or honey-water food goes back to the (water used to rinse utensils which would have feasts of ancient Rome contained honey). when Saturnalia was Anyway pangiallo seems to have stood the test of the main winter festival time, even though it has been relegated to a less important role than it once held at Roman tables. Nowadays it is remembered in local festivals in Montecelio near Tivoli and in Riano north of Rome. Another typical Roman sweet, now supplanted by torrone, is the nociata which was prepared several days before Christmas. There are still some folk today who bake and enjoy this traditional home-made sweet, and whose preparation is simple thanks to the avail6

ability of the ingredients. For those wishing to experiment we propose the following recipe, taken from the book La Cucina Romana e del Lazio by Livio Jannattoni. For approximately half a kilo of nociata: 200g honey, 150g of chopped walnuts, 2 egg whites, a pinch of pepper, juice of half a lemon, bay leaves. Preparation: after whisking the egg whites into soft peaks, pour into a saucepan, then add the honey and pepper and mix well. Place the saucepan on a low flame (to prevent the honey from burning) until the mixture has become thick then add the walnuts. Meanwhile prepare the bay leaves, layering them on a flat surface and pour the nociata over the top evenly and uniformly, add a few drops of lemon juice and finally cover with more bay leaves. Wait until it is cool, cut into pieces and serve. Among the typical sweets, par excellence, there is also panpepato, a traditional sweet from Lazio which featured on tables at the most sumptuous banquets. The original recipe has had some significant modifications over time, such as the addition of chocolate. The most common ingredients were chopped walnuts, blanched almonds, candied orange peel, sultanas, pine nuts, hazelnuts, flour, sugar, ground black pepper, vino mosto* and later pieces of chocolate and bitter cocoa powder were added. Roman tables at Christmas would not have been without mostaccioli whose name derives from the Latin word mustaceum which refers to a sweet bread made with mosto** and baked on bay leaves, even though mosto is not used in the actual recipe. For mostaccioli (not to be confused with pasta of the same name): flour, finely chopped walnuts, honey, egg whites, cinnamon and black pepper. The resulting mixture is rolled flat, cut into rectangular strips then baked in an oven. We can’t fail to mention tozzetti, perhaps the best known of all these ancient sweets thanks to their presence on the shelves in our supermarkets. Known in some areas of Lazio as biscottini, they were made from flour, sugar, eggs and hazelnuts (those made with honey are prepared with flour, mixed dried fruit, almonds, pine nuts, hazelnuts, honey and grated orange zest). The mixture is shaped into long thin strips, baked for a few minutes in the oven, removed, cut diagonally and baked again. Finally, a mention of the pepetti made from flour, honey, hazelnuts, chocolate, nutmeg and, of course, pepper from where it gets its name. For those wishing to immerse themselves in the tradition of Roman sweets and cakes take a walk to Panella on Via Merulana or Valzani on Via del Moro in Trastevere. Valzani has been baking home-made specialities since 1923 and seven years ago it was listed as one of Rome's historic shops. A sweet happy Christmas to one and all. *Vino mosto: grapes left to dry out slightly, boiled in water and strained. Vino mosto is the resulting liquid. **Mosto: crushed grapes (including the pulp, skin and pips). Mosto is the resulting substance having a similar consistency to jam. 22 December 2010

collections at the French Embassy. 17 Dec-27 April. An exhibition of 150 renaissance works including paintings, sculpture, drawings, tapestries and ceramics are on display at Palazzo Farnese. The objects illustrate the building’s rich five-century history from when it was commissioned in the 16th century by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, later Pope Paul III, to its use over the last 135 years as the seat of the French embassy in Italy. Organised by the ministry for cultural heritage, the idea for the exhibition came from the French ambassador Jean-Marc de La Sablière. Visitors can enter the building’s normally off-limit rooms, while the exhibition has been boosted by the loan of artworks and antiquities, previously housed in the palace, from the National Archaeological Museum in Naples and the Louvre in Paris. Palazzo Farnese has played an important role in Rome’s history, politics and art, and over the centuries it has hosted countless diplomats, kings, artists, popes and cardinals. Construction of the palace began in 1517 after a design by architect Antonio da Sangallo the younger. On the death of Sangallo in 1546, Michelangelo took over the project, modifying Sangallo’s designs. When Michelangelo died in 1564 Giacomo della Porta oversaw work on the building until its completion in 1589. For visiting details see www.mostrapalazzofarnese.it. NEW The e Gold d off Romania,, before e and d afterr Trajan. 17 Dec-27 April. The first major showcasing of Romanian heritage in Rome since the 1970s, the exhibition comprises 140 objects mainly from the gold room of the national History Museum in Bucharest. The treasure on show dates from the 16th century BC (the Bronze Age) to the sixth century AD (late antiquity) and includes a precious necklace from the 12th century BC, the spiral bracelets of Dacian capital city Sarmizegetusa from the second century BC and the Poiana-Cotofenesti helmet from the fourth century BC. The ancient Dacian people who occupied the mountains of southern Carpathia, now modern-day Romania, were rich in gold reserves, which the Romans plundered after Trajan conquered the area in the first century AD. Battle scenes from the conquest of Dacia can be seen in Rome on Trajan’s column. Under the patronage of the President of the Italian Republic and the President of Romania, the exhibition is supported by the cultural ministries and embassies of both countries. Opera Notes Opera lovers have two unusual works to choose from in January. Cassandra by Vittorio Gnecchi goes on stage in Catania and A View from the Bridge by William Bolcom has its European premiere in Rome in the same production as the original staging in Chicago in 1999. 06481601, www.operaroma.it. Anastasia, Genoveffa e Cenerentola. 21 Dec-6 Jan. Written and directed by Emma Dante, with Gisella Vitrano, Italia Carroccio, Valentina Chiribella, Davide Celona. Emma Dante, the founder of one of the most famous independent drama companies in Italy, Sud Costa Occidentale, famous also for having staged the inaugural Carmen at the Teatro alla Scala last year. Here she turns her provocative attention to a well-known children’s classic, and transforms it into a parable of our times. In Italian. Teatro Valle, Via del Teatro Valle 21, tel. 066869049, www.teatrovalle.it. L’ultimo degli amanti focosi. 28 Dec-23 Jan. By Neil Simon, directed by Silvio Giordani, with Paola Quattrini and Pietro Longhi. This 1969 Neil Simon comedy is a feli-
citous showcase for actors. The lead role is that of a happily married fish restaurateur exploring the world of infidelity, and the play itself is really a trio of related one-act sketches, variations on the theme of Barney (the protagonist’s) passion. In Italian. Teatro Manzoni, Via Monte Zebio 14, tel. 063223634. The Mousetrap. 13 Jan-6 Feb. By Agatha Christie, directed by Stefano Messina, with Stefano Altieri, Annalisa Di Nola, Stefano Messina, Carlo Lizzani. Agatha Christie's classic mystery murder has been running non-stop since its premiere at the Ambassador’s Theatre in London in 1952. It is the longest continuously running play of all time. In Italian. Teatro Vittoria, Piazza S. Maria Liberatrice 10, tel. 065740170.

Milan Balletto del Teatro alla Scala. 16-31 Dec. In Swan Lake, choreography by Rudolf Nureyev. This beautiful version of Swan Lake was created by Nureyev, who had danced the male lead role many times. He was not satisfied with the normal ending – which he felt was untrue to the tragic undertones of the music – and he wanted to build up the role of the hero to make a proper counterpart to the ballerina. Accordingly, he made his Prince in a dark mood from the very beginning, gave him an extra dance with his friends, and adopted a variation on the ending with the Prince drowned in the overflowing lake. Moscow Ballet – La Classique. 31 Dec-2 Jan. In The Sleeping Beauty, choreography by Alexander Vorotnikov. The touring company utilises dancers from the Bolshoi, Kirov and Ballet Theatres of Kiev and Odessa, champions of the best Russian dance tradition. Thus its technical excellence is indisputable; its dancers display grace, strength and endurance which carry them through a nearly three-hour programme and countless costume changes. However there is something passionless about the performance, the company just doesn’t move or engage the public. The wonderful choreography of Sleeping Beauty provides an opportunity to see inspirational professional dancers of the highest calibre, but the programme is probably too long and too light on narrative for children. Gigli, tel. 0648160255, www.operaroma.it. Balletto di Roma. 3-6 Jan. In The Nutcracker, choreography by Mario Piazza, with the participation of Andrè De La Roche, in the role of the Nutcracker/
Sugar Plum Fairy. Based on a libretto and dramaturgical reelaboration by Riccardo Reim, this modern reworking of the classic Christmas story makes use of video projections and sophisticated costumes and set designs. Auditorium Conciliazione, Via della Conciliazione 3. For booking and information www.auditoriumconciliazione.it.

Florence Macedonian National Ballet. 28 Dec. In The Nutcracker, choreography by Vasili Ivanovich. The story of The Nutcracker and the Mouse King was written by E. T. A. Hoffmann. Alexandre Dumas’ adaptation of the story was set to music by Tchaikovsky and has become the most popular ballet performed around Christmas time. It is especially appealing to children, but it is also much loved by ballet fans for moments of exquisite choreography. Because the ballet centres around a young girl’s Christmas gift of a life-size nutcracker, it has become a standard performance during the Christmas holiday season.
