6 Bruno Ceccobelli. Lupa a Carne Vale, 2010 acquarello su carta, 30 x 22 cm. Bruno Ceccobelli lives and works in his native Todi in Umbria and in Rome and summers in Pietrasanta. He was part of the "San Lorenzo" boys who showed at the French Academy, Villa Medici, in the spring of 2006, and now is an Italian export, a well known international artist. He is the director of the Academy of Fine Arts of Perugia. As a young artist just out of art school, Ceccobelli was part of the independent "La Stanza" people on Via Cavour, a motley group of very young conceptual, arte povera and surrealist artists. Then I saw a wild white scrawl on a grey stood-up wiremesh bedspring found in the street, in the Ferranti gallery. This arresting expressionist as well as arte povera object was shown alongside the work of others who were mostly in the second wave of the transavanguardia movement. He worked ever more with discarded weathered objects which he and his assistants salvaged in the Roman alleys at night. Attentive to symbols and odd signs, studying obscure sects and religions, he uses them in his works to intrigue with their undertow of mysticism. In his broody inward ways Ceccobelli invites you into a mazey realm where you too can muse and quest. The many coloured wolf mothers on our cover are not howling, but submit to the night of an ancient bewitched landscape. editorial Celebrating O national unity Mary Wilsey
Luis Durnwalder (centre) of the Südtiroler Volkspartei won’t be celebrating Italian unity on 17 March. (Photo taken at the Bolzano trade fair in 2008)
Südtiroler Volkspartei The Südtiroler Volkspartei (SVP) was formed in 1945 out of the Andreas Hofer Bund, an antifascist and anti-nazi movement named after the great Tirol patriot Andreas Hofer (1767-1810). Its main aim has always been to protect the rights and culture of the German-speaking minority and the use of the German language throughout the autonomous northern Italian region of Trentino-Alto Adige. After the war its natural ally was the Christian Democratic party. It remained in the centre of Italian politics until the 2008 elections when, with its voting base on the wane, a part of the original party split off, moving left of centre. In the crucial vote of confidence in Silvio Berlusconi’s government in December 2010, its three deputies abstained, therefore assuring the government’s survival.
n which side are you in the great 17 March controversy? Will you be observing the newly declared public holiday or will you be at work as usual? For people with Irish roots there is no controversy. 17 March is quite simply St Patrick’s Day, a day to celebrate national identity and the great saint. But this year in Italy 17 March is something else as well. Just what it should be is not that simple. Officially it has been proclaimed a public holiday to mark the celebrations for the anniversary of the unification of Italy. But the good news that 17 March is a day off has become a case for political point scoring, for rhetoric, for controversy and even indecision. The daily newspaper Corriere della Sera reported on 10 February that during a cabinet meeting, in which his ministers expressed strong views for and against the holiday, prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, said that there should be reflection on the matter. So should we take the day off or not? The debate is both economic and political. There are those who believe that the present economic situation is too dire to permit a day off work. Generally those on this side are not against marking the anniversary, but they believe that the best way to contribute to the national wellbeing is to work rather than not to work that day. Emma Marcegaglia, the head of the employers' association Confindustria, has stated very clearly that Italy cannot afford to lose another day’s work*. She, along with other industrialists, knows that one day’s holiday will probably turn into two; 17 March is a Thursday so the betting is that many people will be off on Friday too, turning the event into a “ponte” or long weekend. This they say is not the right moment to be taking a holiday. The minister of education, Mariastella Gelmini, is also against a day off, but for other reasons. She says that schools should stay open as children will discover more about their national culture and historical roots if they are learning about them from teachers than if they stay at home on holiday. But in Lazio at least all the schools will be shut if the head of the region, Renata Polverini, has her way. However there are those who believe that 17 March should not be a public holiday at all because there is nothing to celebrate. The head of the autonomous province of Bolzano, Luis Durnwalder, a member of the Südtiroler Volkspartei, has said Bolzano will not recognise the day. His argument goes that Bolzano (Bozen in German) was part of the Austrian-Hungarian empire in 1861, was forcibly annexed to Italy under the terms of the post world war one peace treaty in 1919 and as a mainly German-speaking part of Italy doesn’t feel Italian anyway. He may be making emotional headway among his Germanspeaking voters nostalgic for their Austrian roots, but his argument is on shaky ground. Rome wasn’t part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861 either, nor were Venice, the Veneto, Friuli and Trieste (also annexed in 1919 like Bolzano) when the first Italian parliament proclaimed Victor Emmanuel II king of Italy during its sitting on 17 March and declared Rome the capital of the new kingdom ten days later. Luckily no-one is suggesting (yet) that all these areas of Italy should opt out of the public holiday. Nor has anyone (yet) brought up the old monarchy-republic debate. 17 March marks the formation of the Kingdom of Italy in 1861. Kings from the House of Savoy then ruled a geographically united, but often emotionally divided, country until 1946 when Italians, fed up with the Cont. on page 13.
On 16 March Wanted in Rome will have a new full-colour format to celebrate our 25th anniversary, as well as the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy.

COMMUNITY
Rome of the rising sun Andy Devane
R
ecently released figures from Japan’s ministry of foreign affairs reveal that 2,234 Japanese people live in Rome. While this number may be miniscule, Rome’s Japanese community contributes actively to the city’s business and cultural circles, and the links between Rome and Tokyo are growing. In January Japanese entrepreneur Yuzu Yakhi, who has imported Italian clothes to his chain of 400 outlets in Japan for 40 years, made headlines in Rome after agreeing to provide the €1million funding needed to restore the city’s iconic Egyptian-style pyramid, Piramide Cestia, in the S. Paolo-Ostiense district. Japan’s embassy to Italy can be found on Via Quintino Sella near Porta Pia while the Scuola Giapponese di Roma near Via Aurelia in the Bravetta part of the city is an elementary and junior high-school whose curriculum is based on the Japanese educational system. Those wishing to enjoy an authentic Japanese experience in Rome however should look no further than Via Antonio Gramsci in the city’s foreign academy belt in leafy Valle Giulia. Above the British School and the National Gallery of Modern Art, amidst exotic gardens sits the Japanese Cultural Institute. Designed by architect Isoya Yoshida (1894-1975) the building is a superb example of the architecture associated with Japan’s Heian period (7941185). The long eaves, which taper elegantly from the series of flat rooftops, jut out over brown and white pillars and grated hitomi walls, while cherry trees, wisteria, irises and dwarf pines envelop the building which looks across to the green confines of Villa Borghese. The combined effect results in the edifice being a lesson in tasteful, balanced and organic design, in contrast to some of its more grandiose neighbours. The institute's gardens are the work of the renowned garden designer Ken Nakajima, who was also responsible for the Japanese section of the botanical gardens in Trastevere some 20 years ago. They feature all the essential elements associated with the Sen-en style, including a waterfall, ponds, an ornamental bridge and a traditional tóró stone lamp, and this year they are open to the public from 26 March to 28 May. With its tall lanterns susWhile Rome’s pended from the ceilings, its wooden surfaces and generous Japanese community feeling of space, upon entering the building visitors have the is small its dynamic sensation of stepping into Japan. Director Fumio Matsunaga presence is felt in describes the interaction of the world of business Rome’s Japanese community as vital in the role of the institute. “Our varied artistic and cultural and culture activities such as concerts, theatrical performances, exhibitions, conferences and language courses are often conducted in collaboration with Italy’s Japanese community which is crucial to the daily diffusion of our culture in Italy.” As Rome’s Japanese Cultural Institute prepares for its 50th anniversary next year, it is perhaps timely to acknowledge the cultural contribution it has brought to the city since it was established in December 1962, the first of its kind to be built overseas. In 1972 Japan’s ministry of foreign affairs established the Japan Foundation or Kokusai Joryu Kikin, replacing the Kousia Bunka Shinkókai, a private society which promoted international cultural relations. Since 2003 the Japan Foundation has been an independent institution with a global presence, and in Rome it co-exists with the Japanese Cultural Institute which assists it in the coordination of the foundation’s programmes in Italy. Language courses at the institute are divided into four-year programmes of spoken and written Japanese. Beginners attend conversation courses while the more adept opt for the advanced examination in Japanese language proficiency, known as Nihongo Shiken Nôryoku. Held in December, about 500 candidates in Italy sit the test each year. With over 2 March 2011

32,000 volumes the library contains the most comprehensive collection of Japanese-related material in Italy, 60 per cent of which is in Japanese with the rest available in European languages, particularly English. The film library comprises 140 feature films and 80 documentaries about Japanese culture and art which are loaned regularly to cultural associations in Italy. While Japanese culture might conjure up images in Rome of the city's increasingly popular sushi restaurants and large numbers of tourists, the majority of Japansese residents can be found working in business and financial circles. For the last five years Alberto Gaetani from Appio Latino in Rome has worked at JCB International, a major credit card company whose Rome office is on Via Barberini. With over 64 million JCB cardholders, the Japanese firm employs 2,787 people worldwide and recently celebrated 50 years in business. Gaetani says “There are five Italians and two Japanese people working here in Rome’s JCB branch. I can confirm the cliché that the Japanese are hard workers and I’m proud to work for a company whose primary objective is to provide a high quality service to its customers. And although our cultures are far apart, the Japanese are much more like Italians than we might realise, they just hide it well!” In 2006, after being approached by their Japanese friends in Italy, Roman Gianluca Rocchi and his Japanese wife Kanako Osawa identified the need for a “virtual bridge between Japan and Italy” and subsequently launched the Youkoso Italia social networking blog for ItaloJapanese couples and friends of both cultures. Inspired by the Japanese word for welcome, the blog offers news and practical advice to Japanese people living in Italy as well as tips for Italians travelling to Japan, and in Rome it actively promotes Japanese culture. Regular classes in martial arts and the gentle art of kimono investiture are organised while a tea-tasting course providing the historical and practical elements behind the ancient ceremony begins on 26 March and is open to all. Meanwhile the Japanese Cultural Institute is currently screening a series of 18 films by Yasuzo Masumura, an acclaimed Japanese director noted for his dark, satirical style. All of the films appear in their original version with English subtitles, with one of his most famous films The Red Angel being screened on 15 March. In addition the institute is hosting Giappone 900 from 14 March to 2 May. An impressive exhibition of prints, paintings, sculpture, woodcuts, lacquer and ceramics which contrasts traditional Japanese works with western-influenced art, the pieces come from the institute’s collection and are by some of Japan’s leading artists from the last century. Celebrating national unity Cont. from page 3.
royals’ performance during the 20 years of fascism, wanted them gone and voted them into exile in a referendum on 2 June. On 17 March this year the president of the republic, Giorgio Napolitano, will go to the Pantheon in the centre of Rome to pay homage to the kings of Italy buried there (Victor Emmanuel II, in whose honour the Vittoriano in Piazza Venezia was built, Umberto I and his wife Queen Margherita). That a republican president should acknowledge the role of the monarchy in the formation of a united Italy might once have raised eyebrows. Now it seems a fitting way to celebrate 150 years of nationhood, not all of them happy, but nevertheless a century and a half of national achievements. In case you are still wondering, on Thursday 17 March the office of Wanted in Rome will be closed to celebrate the public holiday. On Friday 18 March we shall be open again. * Public holidays in Italy. 1,6 January, Easter Monday, 25 April, 1 May, 2 June, 15 August, 1 November, 8 and 25, 26 December. Mary Wilsey
Correction We apologise for an editing mistake we made in Brette Jackson’s article “The earth-friendly way” in the 2 February edition of the magazine. In the section about the shop L’Albero del Pane, it should have read that Flora Lamberti studied macrobiotics with the renowned nutritionist Michio Kushim, who introduced the modern macrobiotic diet to America, not Lamberti who introduced the modern macrobiotic diet to America.

Subiaco by the German romantic classical landscape pioneer Johann Christian Reinhart.
Homage to Johann Christian Reinhart. 2 Feb-15 May. On the 250th anniversary of the birth of Johann Christian Reinhart (1761-1847), Casa di Goethe pays homage to the German-Roman painter and engraver, considered one of the founders of German romantic classical landscape painting. Views of Rome focuses on Reinhart’s work on Rome and displays a selection of German and Italian loans, such as the Malerisch radirten Prospekte von Italien (pictorially etched prospects of Italy), 24 etchings of views in Italy. Supported by original documents this event focuses on the cultural aspects and curious details on the German colony of artists in Rome at the time. Some of his 38 animal studies illustrate Reinhart’s acute observation and interest in the Roman environment. The artist was born in Bavaria and visited Rome for the first time in 1789, where he stayed for almost 58 years working as a professional artist. He devoted himself to landscape painting, aquatint engraving and prints. Famous are his views of Rome in tempera entitled Four Views from Villa Malta, commissioned by the future King Ludwig I of Bavaria in 1829. Reinhart became a respected point of reference within the German colony of artists in Rome. In 1813 he became a member of the Accademia di S. Luca, which has loaned an unknown portrait of Reinhart by the Spanish painter Josè Madrazo y Agudofor this exhibition. In 1839 after his long Roman experience, Reinhart moved as a painter to the Bavarian court. Casa di Goethe. Via del Corso 18, tel. 0632650412. St Petersburg Eifman Ballet Theatre. 5 March. In Anna Karenina, choreography by Boris Eifman. The work sketches the narrative of the Russian heroine, torn between domestic duty to husband and son and uncontrollable passion for a dashing officer. Eifman translates emotion into motion, moving his dancers boldly and, like Martha Graham, has the theatrical instinct to know when the soul-searching duets and trios need a change of pace. Scenes of Anna, her husband Karenin, and her lover, Vronsky, who wrestle with their emotions and each other, alternate with elegant, rowdy or gaudy ensemble sections, like the opening party where Anna meets Vronsky amidst a swirling sea of waltzing couples. Kataklò Athletic Dance Theatre. 8 March. In Love Machines, choreography by Giulia Staccioli and Jessica Gandini. The name Kataklò comes from the ancient Greek for “I dance by bending and contorting my body.” Based in Milan and founded by artistic director Giulia Staccioli in 1995, the experimental dance company describes its members as acrobatic dancers who compose surrealistic scenarios, offering performances that go beyond cultural, linguistic and generational boundaries and gaps. Love Machines is dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci’s genius, his creative view of the world and his ability to project the impossible. The show follows the adventures of two curious explorers in search of new discoveries, wandering through a mysterious land in a timeless dimension where the relationship between man and the machine is centered on a profoundly optimistic vision of the world. This trilogy which focuses on contemporary existential anguish, tells stories of poverty, oldage and solitude. These contradictions we carry with us all the time – common sense and senselessness, power and powerlessness.” In Italian. Teatro Palladium, Largo B. Carnevale Romano
Opera a Notes This production of Benjamin Britten’s last opera, Death in Venice, directed by Deborah Warner at La Scala in Milan received rave reviews when it was staged in Brussels last year. In Rome Verdi’s Nabucco, which revolutionised 19th-century opera, is conducted by Riccardo Muti and is part of the 150th anniversary celebrations for the unification of Italy. It is a new production, directed by Jean-Paul Scarpitta. Paolo Di Nicola

Carnevale Romano. 26 February-8 March. For 11 days Carnevale Romano brings parades, theatre, music and colour to the streets and squares of the historic centre. Children are especially well-catered for with gladiator schools, pony rides and a wide range of theatrical activities inspired by the ancient festival in Piazza del Popolo on 6 March 13.00-15.00. There will be events for adults and children in Piazza del Popolo on 5-6 March and the Teatro dell’Opera is lending costumes for the festivities. The Museo di Roma Palazzo Braschi hosts Roman Carnival: the rebirth of a tradition, an exhibition of photographs inspired by carnivals past and present by Barbara Roppo and Broken Lens. This year’s carnival sees Rome twinned with both Viareggio and St Petersburg's carnivals. A performance based on the annual Russian Orthodox religious festival Maslenitsa will be staged on 3 March in Piazza del Popolo, and forms part of the year of cultural cooperation between Italy and Russia. The festival finishes on 8 March with the show Lilly and the Butterfly followed by a firework display from the terrace at Pincio. Tel. 060608, www.carnevale.roma.it.
