PAOLA GANDOLFI Mundus 2004
Paola Gandolfi, once companion of Di Stasio, one of the “La Stanza” painters, began early with her own brand of surrealism, of a supercharged reality. The people around her were called “Anacronisti”, that is they were anchored in some sort of timelessness – present-day figures in yesterday’s classical poses and accoutrements. This latter-day surrealism, sometimes purposely rendered with clunky unschooled folk-art clumsiness, often comes off cutting and witty. Body parts like votive objects blink wickedly proliferating like garlands, as she manages to turn the brooding or sinister into something whimsical. I once discovered her at a gallery opening wearing jewellery she had made herself: from her ears hung pendants in the shape of her ears in silver. On this cover she is herself in the shape of a goddess, pagan or not, with real geography patterned and redesigned around her willfully. Her solid, mildly haunting oils contain a fillip of teasing and mischief, which gives them a quizzical aura that is endearing.

30 March 2011 Wanted in Rome
NOT ENOUGH HELP FOR THE HOMELESS
Image by Manolo Cinti from the Coraggio si ricomincia exhibition on homelessness held in Rome last year.
Figures for the homeless vary but what is certain is that there aren't enough beds for them all
I
wait for the last train from Termini on Friday night and a man, probably in his 60s but looking older, asks me if the train goes to Civitavecchia. Yes, I say, it's the last stop. We get on the train and he sits opposite me, offering me a tic-tac. He's homeless and wants to go to Florence, where he can work as a street artist. He shows me his pictures, which are child-like pencil drawings. He has a bad cough and as I get off at my stop half an hour later, I think of him with guilt, about to spend a cold night in a dark and lonely station. It's a desperate story repeated many thousands of times across the country. In Rome alone there are between 6,000 and 8,000 people with no fixed abode according to a June 2010 report based on figures from the Catholic relief organisation Caritas and the Christian community of S. Egidio. With night-time temperatures in Rome dipping as low as -6° in December 2010 and hovering around zero for most of January and February this year, sleeping on the streets is not for the vulnerable, weak or old. Unfortunately, these are often the people you see huddling in sleeping bags and blankets at stations such as Termini, Ostiense and Tiburtina, in improvised tents along the Tiber, on steps and along railway lines: men and women, some old and in need of healthcare and assistance. One third of Rome's homeless are thought to be political refugees and asylum seekers. Caritas, S. Egidio, churches and voluntary organisations offer services for the homeless. There are 33 canteens open in the evening and 36 official hostels or dormitories. But it's not enough. Mario Marazziti, spokesman for S. Egidio, was recently quoted as saying that there are only 2,700 places in the hostels run by the city and the voluntary sector, about 1,000 homeless are in make-shift camps in the city's suburbs and the rest are left to rough it on the streets. So Rome has a huge problem on its hands. Fabrizio Schedid is the coordinator at Binario 95, a day centre for people with no fixed abode at Termini station. Does he think the services and infrastructure for homeless people in Rome are sufficient? "Absolutely not. A person asking for a place in a dormitory has to wait six months. You only have to walk around the streets to see that the problem is not being dealt with by the services provided." One of the main difficulties, according to Schedid, is that the authorities do not know the size of the problem. While a count of people sleeping in Rome's stations on 17 October 2010 came up with the figure 383, this in no way tallies with the estimated 2,700 referred to by Mario Marazziti from S. Egidio. Schedid explains: "As there has never been a comprehensive headcount of people sleeping rough, the scale of the problem hasn't been quantified and therefore it cannot be adequately addressed." While an extra 650 hostel places are made available during the cold period from December to March, these emergency winter beds are closed on 31 March. It's a grim April Fool that from 1 April onwards these people will be on the streets again. The difficulties of homelessness don't stop if you are lucky enough to have a bed in one of the city's hostels. Some dormitories sleep scores of people in one open space while others have small windowless rooms sleeping four people in bunk beds. Some accommodation is without hot water or heating. One of the misconceptions you often hear from the general public is that homeless people have chosen this life. Schedid sighs: "There is a lot of ignorance about homeless people and of course most of them do not choose to Wanted in Rome 30 March 2011

live like that." The factors that lead people to lose their homes vary and the catalyst is often a misfortune that could happen to anyone, such as losing a job, an eviction, an illness, a bereavement or domestic problems. These situations can, in turn, lead to loneliness, depression, poverty, drug use and the break-up of a person's network of friends and family. The first port of call for anyone without a home in Rome is the 24-hour hotline – 800 440022 – run by the city's emergency advice centre. Any member of the public who sees someone sleeping rough in need of help can also call this number. The help centre on platform one at Termini station also gives advice and directions. The people who passed through there in January 2011 give some indication of the demographics of Rome's senza fissa dimora: 83 per cent were male and 17 per cent female; 81 per cent were non-Italian and 19 per cent Italian; nearly half were aged 30-49. Another complicating factor is that some hostel beds are occupied on a long-term basis by people who have found their way off the streets, but have not been able to move on from the temporary accommodation. Rome-born Daniele at Binario 95 in Termini station said he has been staying at a hostel on Via Marsala since 2005. In the 1990s he was a chef before he began sleeping rough in a van or in a supermarket storage cupboard. He now goes to the day centre to rest after a night in the hostel and an early start working at a market. Daniele says: "It's a life where the day-to-day things dominate – and every day there are new problems. One of the most difficult things is that you are in constant contact with other people at the hostel so getting on well with others is important. You also have to look out for others, especially older people." Day centres such as Binario 95 provide important resources that make a huge difference, including a warm and welcoming atmosphere where people can talk, wash clothes, learn skills or just relax. However, the cheerful home-made cushions and welcoming smiles at the day centre belie some harsh realities. The centre's coordinator, Schedid admits: "We try to remove obstacles for people where we can but sometimes you have to accept that there is no ideal solution. To do social work in Italy, you have to really believe in what you're doing." Bija Knowles 5

ROME HOSTS WORLD'S LARGEST BRONZE STATIONS OF THE CROSS
CHILE
The world’s largest bronze Stations of the Cross have been placed along Via della Conciliazione in front of St Peter’s square. The contemporary sacred art series includes 49 statues and 11 crosses and was commissioned for the Chilean port city Coquimbo by the Fundacion Cruz del III Milenio, a Catholic organisation established after Pope John Paul II’s visit to Chile in 1987. Domus Dei, owned by a religious congregation in Rome, oversaw the work while the principle sculptors Pasquale Nava and Giuseppe Allamprese, who began the project in 2002, employed the same ancient lost-wax casting techniques used by Renaissance masters Brunelleschi and Donatello. After Pope Benedict XVI blessed the first station on 1 March, Domus Dei approached the mayor of Rome Gianni Alemanno to seek the city’s permission to display the works on Via della Conciliazione for the duration of the Lenten period. Alemanno agreed to the proposal and soon the street was the scene of heavy lifting equipment as the sculptures were lowered carefully into place. Known in Italy as the Via Crucis, the Stations of the Cross depict the final hours of Jesus, and the devotion commemorating the Passion. The stations will remain in Rome until they are transferred to Chile on 29 April, the week after Easter.
RYANAIR LAUNCH NEW FLIGHTS FROM ROME
IRELAND
In May Ireland's low-cost airline Ryanair will launch five new routes from Rome's Ciampino airport: Memmingen in Germany, Riga in Latvia, Tampere in Finland, Thessaloniki in Greece and Vilnius in Lithuania. The new routes, in addition to the 45 already operating out of Ciampino, will lead to more than four million passengers passing through Rome's second airport. News of extra air traffic has angered people in Ciampino. They complain that Ryanair has disregarded the well-being of residents who are affected by excessive noise pollution. Their previous complaints were countered by Ryanair owner and chief executive Michael O'Leary who claimed that Ryanair aircraft were quieter than those of other companies. Since then the company has requested that the Ciampino area be subject to an "acoustic re-zoning". A war of words continues between Ryanair and ENAC, the national agency charged with regulating civil aviation in Italy. Following antagonistic remarks made by O'Leary, ENAC president Vito Reggio stated that "Although Ryanair is an Irish company, I want to remind Mr O'Leary that when Ryanair operates in the Italian market it must comply with Italian legislation." Meanwhile O'Leary has instigated a spat with the president of the Lazio region Renata Polverini over the construction of a new airport in Viterbo, north of Rome. Those behind the Viterbo scheme hope that it will replace Ciampino as the base for low-cost flights in the Lazio region, however O'Leary scoffed that it is likely that "we, and probably our children, will be dead before it is built." Noting that O'Leary was well-known for his sarcasm, Polverini asked him to leave Viterbo airport to its administrators.
VATICAN MUSEUMS PROVIDE TOURS FOR BLIND AND DEAF The Vatican Museums have introduced new multi-sensory tours for the sight- and hearing-impaired. The tours take place two days a week for a maximum of eight people and include visits to the Raphael rooms, the Sistine Chapel and the classical statues collection. Aside from Italian sign language, the tour guides are proficient in British and French sign languages. The seven guides, five of whom are deaf, received specialised instruction in art history and archaeology at the museums. On the tours for the visually-impaired, visitors are encouraged to touch copies of some of the most important works in the Vatican's Pinacoteca art gallery, such as a replica of Caravaggio's Deposition from the Cross. This involves a hands-on examination of a three-dimensional bas relief of the image, accompanied by selected biblical passages, poetry and Gregorian chanting which explain and enhance the depicted event. For Caravaggio's work, the tour includes additional "olfactory" features allowing visitors to smell aloe and myrrh, used in the preparation of burial shrouds, while the smell of oil paints and the feel of the thick brushstrokes as painted in the style of Caravaggio can be experienced. Also included is a replica section of Melozzo da Forli's Angel with Lute fresco. Visually-impaired visitors receive a booklet written in Braille and large bold print, including raised dots tracing the outline of both Caravaggio and Melozzo's two works. Booking in advance is necessary. For more details see Vatican Museums website http://mv.vatican.va.
AUSTRALIAN FILM WEEK IN ROME
VATICAN
AUSTRALIA
Australian Film Week (28 March-1 April) features eight classic Australian movies that highlight the continent's contribution to cinema and how its indigenous cultures and traditions have enhanced its domestic film sector. The festival also pays homage to some of Australia's most well-known film personalities including Eric Bana, Toni Collette, Geoffrey Rush and the late Heath Ledger. The film week begins with the screening of Bran Nue Dae, a coming-of-age road movie about a young aboriginal couple whose quest to return home turns into an adventure in itself. The movie is brought to life by the attendance of two special guests: the star of the film Rocky McKenzie, and the film's producer Robyn Kershaw. Presented by the Australian embassy to Italy in collaboration with the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia - Scuola Nazionale di Cinema and the Nuovo Cinema Aquila, admission to all screenings is free on a first-come, first-served basis. The other seven selected films are: Two Hands; The Black Balloon; The Man from Snowy River; Lantana; The Dish; Ten Canoes; and Romulus, My Father. See www.italy.embassy.go.au for full programme.

CARAVAGGIO: La Cappella Contarelli 9 March-1 15 Oct An exhibition of the x-ray testing of Caravaggio’s paintings from the chapel of Rome’s S. Luigi dei Francesi. The exhibition presents the results of x-ray testing carried out on three paintings: Martyrdom of St Matthew (1599), Call of St Matthew and St Matthew and the Angel. The landmark research uses a co-ordinated combination of innovative technologies such as digital radiography, infrared reflectography and a process involving the analysis of x-ray fluorescence, all of which provide a intimate understanding of the working techniques employed by Caravaggio. For example, the xrays of the Martyrdom of St Matthew, the artist’s first public work, show that the initial draft of the painting is dramatically different to what we see today, and reveals the compositional changes made by Caravaggio. Caravaggio. La Cappella Contarelli, Palazzo Venezia, Via del Plebiscito 118. 10.00-19.00. RITRATTI, LE TANTE FACCE DEL POTERE AT MUSEI CAPITOLINI 10 March-2 25 Sept 2011 The present exhibition, the second in the five-year project at the Capitoline Museums called I Giorni di Roma, focuses on ancient Roman portraiture with a selection of 150 heads and busts, as well as full-length statues mostly of Roman emperors. The exhibition starts with the late Roman republican period and ends with Imperial Rome. This was a time when public portraits and statues of political officials or military commanders reminded the population of official triumphs and political achievements and when the Roman world was awash with public portraiture. The exhibition is divided into various sections: From the Mask to the Portrait follows the evolution from the time when casts were made from living or dead personalities up to the beginnings of portraiture; Princes and Men as Gods illustrates the ways the image of the emperor was transformed into one of the divinities; The Pattern of Images provides a complete overview of the different models used; The Face of the Powerful offers a gallery of the main personalities of Roman political life; Female Hairstyles analyses how changes in fashion and taste reflect deep social transformations. The exhibition reflects on portraiture as one of the main means of communication and political propaganda in the ancient world. Since ancient times portraits, regardless of whether pictorial, sculptural, photographic or cinematographic, have been a way for individuals to make their mark on history. Musei Capitolini. Via del Campidoglio 1, tel. 0667102475, www.museicapitolini.org. TueSun 09.00-20.00. Gabrielle Bolzoni For more exhibitions see our website www.wantedinrome.com

BOOK REVIEW A WELSHMAN IN ROME by Bryn Jenkins This is a collection of articles by a history teacher who has lived and worked in Rome for over 40 years. It includes itineraries of Bryn Jenkins’ walking tours in Rome from his Renaissance art and history trails to the Risorgimento, as well as an “Angels and Demons” walk. Other articles come from his 30 years at St George’s English School. There are interesting memories of growing up in Cardiff in the 1950s, cycling around Lake Bracciano and along the Appian Way as far as Brindisi, and more. Some items will be of interest mainly to those connected with St George’s, but others will appeal to the
general reader with an interest in history. Throughout there is an emphasis on the physical evidence of Rome’s past in buildings, statues and inscriptions. The densely packed itineraries would have benefited from maps and it is a pity that many of the photographs have not reproduced well. However, Jenkins’ compilation is an interesting read and it is worth mentioning that it is dedicated to, among others, his brother Roger who was born with his heart on the wrong side but lived to the age of 46. There is a concluding appeal for donations to the British Heart Foundation. Philip Revill former Head of History Department of Bristol Grammar School

JASMIN VARDIMON COMPANY 6 April In 7734, choreography by Jasmin Vardimon. The Jasmin Vardimon Company was founded in 1997, and since then the Israeli-born choreographer has consistently intrigued audiences with her passionately driven work. Her latest effort, 7734, is described as a choreographed treatise on the Holocaust. It contains a couple of brutally effective “coup de theatres” and Vardimon’s choreography drives the dramatic narrative with clear-eyed force. Teatro Comunale, tel. 0471304111, www.nbtz.net. See also Rome.
LA RESISTIBILE ASCESA DI ARTURO UI 29 March-2 29 April By Brecht, directed by Claudio Longhi, with Umberto Orsini. Brecht wrote “The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui” while he was fleeing nazi persecution. The play uses stereotypes of American gangsters to parody the ways in which Hitler was allowed to come to power and wreak so much devastation. The epilogue was added later, when world war two was over. In Italian. Teatro Argentina, Largo di Torre Argentina 52, tel. 066840001, www.teatrodiroma.net.
MILAN BALLETTO DEL TEATRO ALLA SCALA 27 March-1 14 April In L’altro Casanova, choreography by Gianluca Schiavoni, with guest artist Polina Semionova. The young Teatro alla Scala dancer and choreographer focuses on the Casanova symbol of seduction in a journey through the musical and literary heritage of the 18th century. Teatro alla Scala, tel. 0272003744, www.teatroallascala.org. Yesterday by Jasmin Vardimon.
FREDDO 7-1 17 April By Lars Norén, directed by Marco Plini. “Cold”, written by the Swedish playwright Lars Norén, is a shockingly realistic account of raciallymotivated violence. This play, based on murders and assaults driven by racial discrimination across Sweden, is a study of the intricate yet extreme nature of intolerance. It begins with something innocent, innocuous and seemingly unimportant, yet before they know it, four young men find themselves divided over race, culture and the right to live. In Italian. Teatro India, Lungotevere Vittorio Gassman, tel. 06684000346, www.teatrodiroma.net.

PISA BALLETTO DELL’ESPERIA 7 April An evening dedicated to 20th century dance. The Dying Swan choreography by Thierry Malandain; L’Apre midi d’un faune choreography by Eugenio Scigliano; The Four Temperaments choreography by Paolo Mohovich. This young and interesting Italian contemporary dance company was founded in 1999. Based in Turin, it is currently composed of seven soloist dancers of different nationalities and is directed by the choreographer Paolo Mohovich whose Four Temperaments is a tribute to the choreography of George Balanchine. Scigliano’s L’Apre midi d’un faune is an all-male ballet that evokes the latent eroticism of Nijinsky’s famous faun. And the power and grace of Malandain's Dying Swan is representative of many symbols, including that of light. Teatro Verdi, tel. 050941111, www.teatrodipisa.it.

An acclaimed choreographer and associate artist of Sadler’s Wells in London since 2006, Jasmin Vardimon is a young Israeli-born Londoner who has made a name for herself as an interpreter and representative of contemporary technological urban life and culture. She has interwoven the old favourites with new choreographic material, live video and animation. Vardimon’s trademark however is a strong directorial style, acute observation of human behaviour and clever use of innovative technologies. Auditorium Conciliazione, Via della Conciliazione 4. Booking tel. 800904560, www.auditoriumconciliazione.it. BALLETTO DEL TEATRO DELL’OPERA 29 March-3 3 April In an evening of new works created for the company by Virgilio Sieni, Shen Wei and Lindsay Kemp. Teatro dell’Opera, Piazza B. Gigli, tel. 0648160255, www.operaroma.it. COMPAGNIA EMILIANO PELLISARI 29 March-1 10 April In Cantica II Il Purgatorio. I am reluctant to describe this performance as dance; it is rather a show in which light design, music and special effects combine with dance, circus athletics and mime. Created by the innovative Emiliano Pellisari who is also jack-of-all-trades as far as costumes, sets, and lighting etc are concerned, this work dedicated to Dante’s Purgatory in the Divine Comedy, follows the success of Inferno and represents an evolutionary step towards the spiritual rise of the mediaeval religious man, and is accompanied by music and choral singing.
