Ontani is one of the most unusual artists around and is also internationally notorious. Coming upon his images in art galleries and museums, they astonish and amuse you each time. He came to show in Rome in the 1960s and was one of the first to take part in happenings here, in tableaux vivants – living pictures – to use films and specially photography; he distributed fine drawings of hobgoblins, weird fauna, or himself as angel or faun. At one point he decided to choose his own person – his face as well as his body – to be his sole subject matter. He has been faithful to himself ever since. Here in Rome for our cover Ontani shows himself in a blue light as our She-Wolf, patiently and wisely sheltering the pudgy twins, one black, one white, eyeing us mildly. He has shown his conceits all over the world – at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, at several biennales in Venice, at the Guggenheim, recently in retrospectives at PS 1 in Queens and MoMA in Manhattan. He is a one man art movement. But at times Ontani shows himself looking at you with a melancholy measured mein, in the absolutely deadpan manner of Buster Keaton. In making himself his own art object, in offering himself so indulgently and bravely, he is creating a touching thing, gloriously and humbly beyond himself.

LAZIO’S ORGANIC VINEYARDS

The Slow Wine Guide launched in March could give locally produced organic wines a boost – especially in Lazio

onsumers in Italy have often viewed organic wines with suspicion. Small organic wine producers have thrived anyway, but mainly by exporting to countries where there is more demand for their produce. It seems that the Italian market is now getting ready for a greater acceptance and appreciation of locally produced organic wines, whether officially certified or not. This was certainly the message at the launch of the Slow Wine Guide 2011 in March, an event in which 50 Italian wine producers – many from Lazio – came to showcase their top wines. Carlo Petrini, the founder of the international Slow Food movement, was there to inaugurate both the wine-tasting event and the launch of the guide. In his opening speech he expressed his faith in – and enthusiasm for – the present state of wine-making in Italy, saying: “There has been a rebirth. The young wine producers here today should feel proud to work with the land. You can express your territory, your land, through your wine.” Petrini, who has campaigned against intensive food production since the 1970s, added that we all have an important part to play in the food production chain: “We must all become co-producers, not just passive consumers. Demand to know where your food and wine come from.” The authors of the Slow Wine Guide 2011 visited, interviewed and reviewed 1,850 wineries they believe cultivate and produce wines in the spirit of the Slow Food movement (which doesn’t necessarily mean organic – the Slow Food movement aims to get away from mass food production and fast food, and to encourage small local producers to grow or breed quality products). 36 wineries in Lazio are reviewed in the guide; only 14 are certified organic. One of these belongs to Sergio Mottura, who operates a family-run vineyard in northern Lazio that produces 100,000 bottles a year. It has been certified as organic since 1996, and 60 per cent of its wine is exported to countries including the US, Canada, the UK, Belgium, Russia and Switzerland. Sergio’s son, Giuseppe Mottura, explains: “Going organic wasn’t a commercial choice; it was more of a production choice, because organic cultivation methods mean the grape grows and tastes better.” The volcanic terrain and stable micro-climate around the Mottura family estate, which covers 120 hectares north of Viterbo and east of Lake Bolsena, certainly helps them to use organic cultivation methods. The weather is stable and dry during June, July and August so the vines don’t need additional chemical treatments. Giuseppe, who is also a sommelier, says: “It’s a dry climate, which means there’s less need for intervention. It makes our job easier. We also work with the area’s autochthonous vines, which are more naturally resistant to vine diseases.” Of course there are difficulties and downsides to organic vine cultivation. In 2008 there was an exceptionally wet spring, and because Mottura’s vineyards hadn’t been treated chemically they lost 70 per cent of their crop. Mottura says: “If this happens once every 40 years, you can absorb the loss. If it were to become a more frequent weather pattern, that would be a problem. The talk of global climate change is a worry – if the area around Viterbo becomes a warmer but wetter microclimate, it would be very bad for us.” Wanted in Rome 13 April 2011

Other wine producers in Lazio, including S. Andrea (producers of the delicious Moscato di Terracina, Doc) and Casale della Ioria (growing autochthonous vines in the Ciociara region around Acuto west of Rome and producing the renowned Cesanese del Piglio wine) use organic methods, but they haven’t got the organic certificate and their wines aren’t labelled organic. Why? The strict European regulations and inspections that come handin-hand with an organic certificate may be a deterrent. Another reason could be the lack of interest and demand from the Italian wine market, although this seems to be changing gradually, with the result that organic wines are no longer the poor relation of mainstream wines made from chemically treated grapes. A diversity of microclimates in Lazio enables different types of vine to be cultivated across the region, from the drier, warmer areas around Frosinone, south of Rome, where the red Cesanese grape thrives, up to the slightly wetter climate of northern Lazio around Viterbo where the white Grechetto grows. Two of Mottura’s most renowned white wines are made from Grechetto: Poggio della Costa (matured in steel barrels) and Latour a Civitella (matured in oak). Both are instantly recognisable by the distinctive porcupine label and also by their strong, full-bodied and fragrant flavour (which apparently goes really well with meat dishes such as rabbit, or a good carbonara). The Mottura vineyard has been in the family for three generations. It was started by Giuseppe’s grandfather before his father Sergio took over the business. He says: “My grandfather started this vineyard in the 1930s. It has taken us three generations to perfect the process. You only have one chance to make wine each year, so everything that you can learn from previous years – and generations – is enormously valuable.” But of their 120 hectares, just 37 are planted with vineyards; the rest is used to grow grains and to produce olive oil. This combination of wine production with other types of food production is also key to a sustainable, thriving agriculture, according to Slow Food’s Petrini, who reiterates that fine wines cannot stand alone, but must be an accompaniment for good food: “Remember that good wine is drunk with good food – so without good aubergines, good meat or good fish, there is no role for fine wine. There is no future for wine as a gourmet, fashionable product, without a strong agricultural tradition accompanying it.” Bija Knowles The Slow Wine Guide 2011, published by Slow Food Editore, is priced at €24. EXPLORING THE PRENESTINI MOUNTAINS With spring finally here the desire to get out of the city becomes almost irresistible. A sanctuary since the fourth century, La Mentorella's popularity as a pilgrimage destination has grown since the papacy of John Paul II, when the pope was a regular visitor.

ur trip starts 40km from Rome at the town of Palestrina, which can be reached along either the Via Casilina or the Via Prenestina. If you haven’t been here already, take the time to visit the remains of the monumental Roman temple of Fortuna Primigenia and the delightful archaeological museum in the Barberini Palace at the top of the hill, with its unique first-century BC mosaic of the Nile. From the museum, the road carries on towards Monte Guadagnolo and the sanctuary of the Mother of Grace, more familiarly known as La Mentorella (about 22km away and clearly indicated). You are now in the heart of the Prenestini mountains, a long, pre-Apennine chain crossing central Lazio, rich in wildlife and rare flora. The road winds upwards, revealing breathtaking views at every bend. This unspoiled wilderness, an austere landscape of monolithic white rocks, fir-crowned hills and open land where you will come across livestock wandering around freely, is perfect for walking and picnics. Various signposts indicate sentieri antichi (the ancient tracks of shepherds and pilgrims), which walkers can follow. At the town of Capranica Prenestina, circle the square and follow the sign for the Mentorella sanctuary (10km further on). About half way there, you’ll see the ranch-style gate posts of La Cannucceta agriturismo, a farm that has guest rooms and an excellent restaurant. It has a wonderful position deep inside the wooded Cannucceta valley, listed as a natural monument, where you can see the remains of an ancient Roman aqueduct and a venerable tree known as Pierluigi da Palestrina’s oak. It is said that the musician and composer came here to find inspiration under its spreading boughs. Carrying on up the road, the monumental crags of Mt Guadagnolo appear on the horizon – a jagged row of teeth surmounted by a cluster of towering aerials and satellite discs installed by the Italian defence ministry. It’s worth making a short detour to visit the town, which crowns the highest peak of the Prenestini range. Guadagnolo has something of the air of a frontier town, with its unadorned grey-stone houses and few signs of life (except on Sundays, when visitors crowd its popular little restaurant). At over 1,200m it can be chilly even in summer, so be prepared. A short walk and a steep flight of stone steps takes you up to the gigantic bronze statue of the Redeemer that holds its arms wide open to the vast 360-degree view. You get some idea of how wild the weather here can be when you read the inscription explaining that this statue was set up in 1976 to replace an earlier one destroyed in a storm. The massive stone fragments of this earlier monument lie heaped on one side; the head is in the local church. Drive back down and pick up the road to La Mentorella. pinnacle of white rock, this is believed to be the oldest sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary, consecrated by Pope Sylvester I in the fourth century. There are two theories regarding its rather strange nickname: one claims it derives from the scented mint (menta odorosa) that grows abundantly in the area, while the other suggests it comes from vultur, with reference to the vultures that once nested on the crag, giving it the name Vulturella, gradually transformed into Mentorella. Although always a popular centre of local pilgrimage and an important Benedictine sanctuary, it only became widely known in the 1980s, during the papacy of John Paul II. Belonging to the congregation of Polish Resurrectionist Fathers since 1857, it was a favourite spot for the Polish Karol Wojtyla who visited it often. A 7km footpath dedicated to Pope Wojtyla leads off just outside the sanctuary gates and ends up at the neighbouring town of Pisoniano, passing the ruins of a villa that belonged to the powerful Roman Calpurnius Piso family. It’s an interesting trek, but over very rough terrain, and should only be undertaken by experienced hikers. The little church of the Mother of Grace has kept its simple mediaeval form. The columns of the aisles are decorated with 15th-century frescos of saints and a modern stained glass window at the back of the choir commemorates the Polish Catholic Millennium (966-1966). The much venerated wooden statue of the Madonna and Child, believed to date from the 13th century, stands on the main altar, surrounded by rows of silver ex-voto hearts testifying to miracles performed and prayers granted. A path round the back of the church leads to the grotto of St Benedict and the Holy Staircase. Benedict (obviously a man of iron constitution) is said to have lived secluded in this narrow cave for two years. At the entrance, a pile of skulls lies in a glassed-off niche inscribed with the grim reminder: “What you are, we once were. What we are, you will become. The bones of the Benedictines await the Resurrection.” The Holy Staircase (“Indulgences granted”, claims the nearby plaque) goes up to the old belfry tower with a stunning view. A long, swinging rope dangles from the two bells. Despite the notice that advises: “Don’t be a bell ringer if your heart doesn’t beat as a Christian”, many visitors (especially young ones) cannot resist the temptation. ZINGARI Il presente eroico 1-2 26 April Dedicated to the Rom culture, this multimedia exhibition comprises photographs from the 1930s and 1960s-1970s and the screening of a biographical documentary on gypsy life titled Weaving Two Worlds by Belgian Jan Yoors. In 1934, 12-year-old Yoors befriended a group of Rom children near his home in Antwerp. He soon began living with them and spent six months in their company as they travelled through Turkey, Poland, Germany, France, Spain, Yugoslavia, Romania and Hungary. The Rom community in Rome has received much media coverage in recent times due to the tragic fire at Tor Fiscale in February resulting in the deaths of four Rom children. Sala S. DI TRE COLORI 23 March-1 1 May Of Three Colours is the title of an installation conceived and created by Anna Onesti for the 150th anniversary of Italy’s unification. The work consists of 150 paper lanterns in the colours of the Italian flag. The paper has been dyed with speciallyproduced natural pigments and painted by the artist using ancient Japanese techniques. LORENZO LOTTO 1480-1 1556 2 March-1 12 June Lotto was born in Venice and was a key painter of the city’s Renaissance. He arrived in Rome in 1508, after several years in Treviso and Recanati, summoned by Julius II to decorate the papal apartments. But it is thought that he fell out with Raphael and left, disillusioned, two years later, never to return. This retrospective covers Lotto’s artistic life and highlights the poetic qualities of the artist who combined some of the traditional elements of 15th-century art with the innovative elements of the baroque age. TIVOLI VILLA ADRIANA Dialogues with the Antique 8 April-6 6 November 2011 On display are many artefacts and fragments of ancient works that recall the magnificence of the Roman Emperor Hadrian (76-138 AD). Matteo D’Amico, who was born in Rome in 1955 and studied at the conservatory of S. Cecilia, was influenced by Goffredo Petrassi as well as by the poetry of Mallarme and Auden. OPERA OPERA NOTES Easter is a good time in Rome for music lovers. There are two highlights this year from which to choose; St John’s Passion by J. S. Bach at the Auditorium Parco della Music and the premiere of Matteo D’Amico’s Stabat Mater, commissioned by the Accademia Filarmonica Romana, at the Teatro Argentina. A Roma per le feste di Pasqua gli amanti del canto non hanno che l’imbarazzo della scelta. Il 21 aprile al Parco della Musica l’Accademia Nazionale di S. Cecilia presenta La Passione secondo Giovanni di Johann Sebastian Bach. Era tradizione della chiesa riformata proporre della musica, sia come commento teologico sia come approfondimento spirituale, nelle celebrazioni del venerdì santo, del giorno cioè in cui venivano rievocate la Passione e la Morte di Gesù Cristo. La Passione secondo Giovanni fu eseguita la prima volta a Lipsia il 7 aprile 1724; è incentrata sui capitoli XVIII e XIX del Vangelo di S. Giovanni, ne esalta la drammaticità ma anche l’aspetto più emozionale. Sarà eseguita da La Petite Bande diretta da Sigiswald Kuijken: è un complesso belga specializzato nella musica barocca che nasce nel 1972 su richiesta della casa discografica “Harmonia Mundi” per registrare la musica del Bourgeois gentilhomme di Jean-Baptiste Lully, sotto la direzione di Gustav Leonhardt. Deve il suo nome alla piccola orchestra di cui disponeva Lully quando componeva la musica per la corte del Re Sole.

Sempre il 21 aprile anche l’Accademia Filarmonica Romana celebra la Settimana Santa al Teatro Argentina con Stabat Mater di Matteo D’Amico: una composizione contemporanea ispirata dal romanzo Lo Spasimo di Palermo di Vincenzo Consolo, in cui l’assassinio di Paolo Borsellino è raccontato come fosse avvenuto sotto gli occhi della madre. D’Amico dice lo strazio e la commozione di una mamma per la morte di un figlio come fossero della Madonna per Gesù. Stabat Mater è eseguito in prima assoluta nella versione per quartetto d’archi, è cantato da Tania Bussi e Marina Comparato, recitato da Alfonso Veneroso e suonato dal Quartetto Savinio, che è nato nel 2000 e si chiama così in onore di Alberto Savinio (nome d’arte di Andrea De Chirico, fratello del celebre Giorgio), scrittore, pittore, musicista, uomo di teatro e personalità tra le più originali del XX secolo italiano. Nella seconda parte del concerto sarà eseguito Quartetto per archi in la minore, detto “Rosamunde” di Franz Schubert, un compositore dall’animo inquieto e tormentato che morì a soli 31 anni. THE ROYAL WEDDING 29 April 2011 His Royal Highness Prince William will marry Catherine (Kate) Middleton in Westminster Cathedral on 29 April 2011. The BBC has predicted that the wedding will be one of the most watched events in television history, with a global audience of over two billion people. By comparison, the royal wedding in 1981 between HRH Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer attracted a broadcast audience of one billion. Around 1,900 guests have been invited to the royal wedding. After the ceremony Her Majesty The Queen will host a lunchtime reception at Buckingham Palace for around 600 guests.

Approximately 300 have been invited to attend a dinner at the Palace in the evening hosted by HRH The Prince of Wales. Prince William and Kate first met in Scotland when they were both studying history of art at the University of St Andrews. After the wedding, Prince William and Kate will continue to live at Anglesey near where Prince William is training as a search and rescue pilot with the Royal Air Force. THE CHERKAOUI/MAQOMA DOUBLE BILL PROJECT 15-1 17 April In Southern Bound Comfort, choreography by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Gregory Maqoma. The first part of the programme consists of the work Southern Comfort performed by South African-born dancers Gregory Maqoma and Shanell Winlock. The second piece, Bound, choreographed by Belgian-Moroccan Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, is a delicate and theatrical exploration of the ties that bind. Maqoma, Winlock and Cherkaoui met at a school founded by Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. Ten years later, although Maqoma lives in South Africa, Shanell in London, and Cherkaoui in Belgium, their discussion has never ceased. The Roman Agency for Mobility Services organised an annual workshop at the end of March for the 120 Roman mobility managers and their companies. Mobility managers are in charge of finding and promoting environmentally friendly solutions to get employees to and from work. The workshop awarded companies with the best eco-sustainable mobility projects. The top award went to mobility manager of Sogei Spa, Bruno Baione, for the company’s environmentally friendly commuting plan for its employees. Some of the other companies mentioned for good performance were Terna, Anonima Petroli Spa, Wind Telecommunications, Monte Paschi di Siena, Provincia di Roma, British American Tabacco Italia, Todini Costruzioni, Accademia Nazionale di S. Cecilia. The Agency for Mobility Services coordinates mobility management and gives technical advice to mobility managers on ways to minimise the impact on the environment. It also helps companies identify the best solutions to streamline the movement of their employees. The benefits for employees include discounts for the purchase of annual Metrebus cards, new opportunities for the Car Sharing service, new shuttle and cycling services. THE WOMEN OF TROY presented by Eternal Lines 12-1 17 April English-language acting company Eternal Lines offers a contemporary vision of Euripides’ masterpiece of classical Greek theatre, while retaining elements of the play’s traditional performance style. Set at the end of the Trojan war, the story follows Hecuba, the fallen queen of Troy and a group of broken Trojan women as they await their final humiliation: transportation to Greece and a life of slavery. Penned in 415 BC it is considered by many to be the finest anti-war play ever written. Directed by Douglas Dean, who established Eternal Lines in 2009, the production features Shelagh Stuchbery as Hecuba, Carolyn Gouger as Andromache, Maya Vassallo as Cassandra and Marta Gandini as Helen. THE GARDENS OF NINFA April-N November Situated 70 km south-east of Rome near Sermoneta at the foot of the Lepini mountains, the town of Ninfa is home to one of Italy’s most popular gardens. Belonging to the Caetani family since the 14th century, the site was abandoned in 1382 but in 1922 Lelia Caetani, the last descendant of the Caetani family, and her husband Hubert Howard, began to create the garden as it is today. Over 10,000 shrubs, plants and flowering trees from all over the world grow among the mediaeval ruins, while the river Ninfa forms a lake in the garden. This year the gardens are open on 17, 24, 25 April, although management have advised against visiting on Easter Sunday due to the expected large crowds. LANDRIANA 22-2 25 April 2011 The annual garden fair and horticultural sale takes place at the Landriana gardens south of Rome over the Easter weekend. Firmly established on the gardening calendar for professionals and amateur green-fingers alike, this year organisers of Primavera della Landriana are promising not only an explosion of colour but the best in Italian floriculture, with more than 100 exhibitors from across Italy displaying plants, bulbs, books, pots, garden furniture and equipment. The ten-hectare gardens were created in the 1950s by owner Marchesa Lavinia Taverna Gallarati Scotti with the help of renowned English landscape designer Russell Page. Now considered the most important post-war garden in Italy, Landriana contains 32 secret rooms and walks including one planted entirely with Mutabilis roses. EUROPRIDE PROGRAMME SHAPES UP The Europride Committee is getting set for Europride festival (1-12 June) with a jam-packed programme including exhibitions, film screenings, sporting events, concerts, theatre, comedy and cabaret performances, as well as special galas and parties. Europride aims to promote equality, uniting people in a celebrative atmosphere where all are welcome, and to foster a sense of community within the LGBT population. There will be a pride village open from late afternoon until late at night where you’ll find plenty of entertainment or a place to mix with mates or make new friends. Among the events being arranged is a reading at the Teatro Eliseo on 5 June. This is organised by Mario Fortunato, author, journalist and former director of the Italian Cultural Institute in London from 2000 to 2004. When prime minister Silvio Berlusconi tried to make him resign his post in 2002 for reasons of sexual orientation, many British authors, including Nobel-prize winner Doris Lessing and Harold Pinter, supported him, thus obtaining his re-appointment. The reading will feature authors such as David Leavitt, Matteo B. Bianchi, Ivan Cotroneo, Walter Siti and Valeria Viganò. Another unique event will be the international LGBTQ swimming tournament at the Foro Italico swimming pool on 11 June 2011.
