ENZO CUCCHI Senza titolo 2010
terracotta dipinta a freddo / 20 x 22 x 18 cm In the late 1970s, when young artists were under the spell of chillingly intellectual conceptualism – an art where the idea of its construction counted more than its very construction – some of the youngest Italians launched a radically different trend. Transavanguardia, a new figurative art was born: from sitting in their studios thinking up convoluted traps these artists were suddenly back to the manual – making actual pictures. The best known are Cucchi, Chia and Clemente, the group usually called “The three Cs”. Francesco Clemente stayed in New York with his success, Sandro Chia has a loft there and holdings here, and Enzo Cucchi, the most authentic, stayed in Italy. From the start he helped himself lavishly to the folktales and secret longings of a rough, much tried countryfolk, its sombre feelings, fear and trembling still lurking under the new, hopelessly mechanised world of today. The new figurative sorcerer, now an international hero, works at a sort of voodoo resuscitation, a mischievous scene, where hobgoblins, death heads, rough-hewn giant figures flicker and prance. All of them are both solemn and droll at the same time, bending to his cunning and sinister wit. It’s a ground for the super-sophisticated to lose their constraint, and they do it gladly. With Cucchi we enter sooty dark woods under a starless sky, ringing with witchy laughter.

SANTO SUBITO
M
any of those who were in Rome for the funeral of Pope John Paul II six years ago may be hoping that his beatification on 1 May this year will prove to be a re-run of those emotional days surrounding his last hours, his death and his funeral. During those nights early in April 2005 when pilgrims kept vigil in St Peter’s Square, watching the light from the room where the pope lay dying, to the days when mourners stretched from St Peter’s back along the banks of the Tiber, Rome turned into a hospitable, well-organised city. Its faultless organisation coped quietly and efficiently with the outpouring of grief from millions of pilgrims – some say two some say four million – and with the tribute bearers who flooded into Rome. Volunteers shepherded pilgrims around the city, providing bottles of mineral water or help for those who felt faint from the interminable hours of waiting to pay their respects to the dead man. Dignitaries came and went. Nine monarchs, 70 presidents and prime ministers, 14 leaders of other religions attended the funeral. Everyone wanted to be in Rome in April 2005 and the media gave the event saturation coverage. One of the many poignant images of the funeral was when the wind blew shut the open pages of the Gospels placed on top of the pope’s simple coffin. But the moment everyone remembers best was the spontaneous roar that broke out across St Peter’s Square, interrupting the homily of the man who was soon to become pope. “Santo subito”, cried the crowd over and over again, forcing Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger to pause several times. The beatification of John Paul II on 1 May is in part a response to that demand. Beatification in the Roman Catholic Church can take decades, if not centuries. It is the last step before being proclaimed a saint and is not granted lightly. The minimum interval before a case can be opened is five years after death, unless the pope waives the waiting period for special reasons. Then the process, which usually starts with a request from the grass roots, often languishes in the corridors of power until the conditions are right to push it forward quickly. Six years therefore is speedy, reserved only for the stars of the Catholic Church. Mother Teresa of Calcutta was beatified six years after her death thanks to the interest of Pope John Paul II and now the Polish pope himself has been helped along by his successor Benedict XVI. But the emotions that poured out in Rome six years ago probably cannot be repeated today. Since then the image of the Catholic Church has been marred by cases of sexual abuse, many of which occurred and were subsequently covered-up during the papacy of John Paul II. Tensions between religions have widened not narrowed since his death. Whereas the Polish pope had the gift of bringing people together with a wave of his
Wanted in Rome 27 April 2011
hand, the hug of a small child or a few words to a disabled adult, his successor rarely shows a similar charismatic pull. It was originally thought that the beatification would attract the same large crowds as in 2005, but now official figures estimate that there will be about 300,000 at the Mass on 1 May. Most of the Church hierarchy is expected to be in the Eternal City that day, pilgrims from his native Poland are sure to be present by the bus load and the faithful from the United States and Spain are expected to be numerous too. The rest is less certain. However those who come are promised a good welcome by the city and thanks to the organisation of the Vatican’s travel arm, Opera Romana Pellegrinaggi. A three-day pass for €18 is on offer, which covers not only public transport, but also a packed lunch on 1 May, health care and various guided tours. Special trains to transport pilgrims from lodgings and campsites outside Rome have also been laid on. From 26-29 April and then again on 2 May the Vatican Museums will stay open until midnight. Companies in Rome are being asked to sponsor the costs of security, sound and video systems and the city is laying on its own celebrations, which happen to coincide with the traditional public holiday on 1 May. All the museums will be open until late on 1-2 May and there will be a special concert in Piazza del Campidoglio on 2 May at 19.00. The main events are an evening prayer vigil in Circo Massimo on 30 April, the beatification Mass itself on 1 May and then a Mass of thanksgiving on 2 May. All events are free. The remains of the pope will be brought from the crypt of St Peter’s to lie in front of the main altar for veneration. Subsequently they will be interred in the chapel of S. Sebastian to the right of the entrance to the basilica and just to the left of the chapel where Michelangelo’s Pietà stands, a fitting position for the charismatic pope. However the Church is careful to emphasise that John Paul II is to be beatified because of his holiness and not because he was a world celebrity in a global age. It is of course the multiple media images that come to mind when thinking of Pope Wojtyla, the dramatic moments surrounding the attempt on his life on 13 May 1981, his contribution to the end of the Soviet Union and its domination over eastern Europe, his countless missionary visits overseas. But the essence of his sanctity is more difficult to define. Perhaps it was in those last suffering years, in that crippled old man, the weak, dribbly, almost incoherent human being, who was nevertheless determined to get down on his knees to pray, that he best portrayed his Christian faith and holiness – and the stuff of which saints are made. WOMEN AT RISK
V
More lives are lost in Italy through domestic violence than through mafia killings, but there is not enough money to help all the women in need
iolence against women has made the headlines in Rome several times since the beginning of the year. The media gave considerable coverage to a number of rapes and attacks on women in the city’s streets (one involving an American tourist), while Rome mayor Gianni Alemanno also unveiled an initiative “Mai più violate” (Never again violated). The fanfare launch for this campaign saw the upbeat slogan “No alla violenza” projected onto the Colosseum. But then on International Women’s Day, just hours after the public announcement of the campaign, the mutilated and as yet unidentified corpse of a young woman was discovered in southern Rome near Via Ardeatina – a depressing reminder that, without the funding and infrastructure of social services, words have little effect. The brutal and frightening attacks on women in public places do not give the whole picture of violence against women, however, because 95 per cent of all attacks on women take place within the family. The perpetrator is usually the woman’s husband, partner or ex-boyfriend, a “friend” or relative. A 2006 study of 25,000 women by Istat, the Italian national institute of statistics, found that one-third of Italian women aged between 16 and 70 had experienced male aggression. The study said this represents 6.7 million women in Italy who have been subjected to physical or sexual violence and rape. So are the government and local authorities doing enough to protect women from the killer in the home? It is a story heard time and again from those working in Rome’s social services, that funding is simply inadequate. There are numerous help centres for victims of domestic abuse in Rome, but they are woefully underfunded and unable to give the necessary support to all women who come to their door. Differenza Donna was the first women’s centre against domestic abuse in Rome and it now has five centres offering counselling and advice to 2,500 women each year. They also have 30 hostel places for women escaping violence – again, the number in need is far greater, so there is a waiting list for beds. As the association’s president Emanuela Moroli says: “The women who come to us are just the tip of the iceberg.” The vast majority of cases are never reported to the help centres, let alone to the police. Moroli goes on to explain: “We only have resources to see the most extreme and serious cases: these are women who have suffered physical violence from their partners for years and years. Some women are referred to us because they have ended up in hospital. Maybe some haven’t been physically abused, but their lives are nevertheless made hellish by their partner – by psychological threats, bullying or economic oppression.” Donna e Politiche Familiari is another association of professionals offering legal advice and psychological support to women. From her office at Casa Internazionale delle Donne, Teresa Dattilo, a psychologist and president of the association, reiterates that there just aren’t enough services in Rome: “We have three offices, but we can’t meet the demand. We can only treat the most serious cases that come to us, others may have to wait a month to be seen.” So while public violence against women accounts for just five per cent of male attacks on females, domestic abuse is not given the same sensational media coverage and goes unreported nine times out of ten. A short news item in La Repubblica newspaper on 6 April reported that a woman, seven months pregnant, was admitted to hospital having been viciously beaten by her 34-year-old husband in the Acqua Bullicante Wanted in Rome 27 April 2011
district of east Rome. The Carabinieri had been called by neighbours who heard her screams – not for the first time – late at night. Why don’t women come forward sooner instead of suffering, in some cases for years? Dattilo explains that the woman is often not able to admit or accept her own situation. Moroli echoes this view, saying that the women who come to Differenza Donna often need to see their own lives in a new light: “They need to come to terms with the truth, which is that their husband or partner did not love them, but wanted to own or control them. They need to learn to protect themselves psychologically – but also to protect their work, family and friendships. Men try to isolate the woman by destroying her work and by driving away her friends and family. A large number of women who come to us are not economically independent and this makes them very vulnerable.” Both Dattilo and Moroli point out that violence against women does not have any cultural or socio-economic common denominator. As Dattilo explains: “Domestic violence is like a language that you learn. It doesn’t have a typical social stereotype; some of my patients are the wives of doctors, of university professors, of successful men.” Can the language of violence be unlearned as well? Donna e Politiche Familiari and Differenza Donna are working in schools in and around Rome to run preventative initiatives that raise awareness and change the attitude of schoolchildren to relationships between the sexes. Dattilo says: “Our work in schools aims to break down social and cultural stereotypes through games and role-playing. We encourage the teenagers to identify with the roles of victim and persecutor. Some of these youths already show jealous, possessive and violent behaviour towards females – they want to control what their girlfriends wear, where they go and with whom.” Differenza Donna also works extensively with schools in Rome and with an emergency walk-in centre – called Codice Rosa – at the Policlinico Umberto Primo to provide help for victims of physical and sexual violence (open to all women including non-Italians, immigrants and tourists). And last year Donna e Politiche Familiari launched a campaign aimed specifically at men who want help with anger management and handling stress. Called “Colpire non è virile”(Hitting isn’t manly), the campaign has been successful so far, according to Dattilo, in persuading men who are potentially abusive to address and manage their feelings. More lives are lost in Italy through domestic violence than through mafia killings. In the courtyard at Casa Internazionale delle Donne, you can read the names of the women killed by domestic violence in recent years. The wall is covered in more than 150 names and makes for very sobering reading. Bija Knowles Help centres: Codice Rosa is a walk-in centre for women at the public hospital Policlinico Umberto Primo (on Viale del Policlinico 155; nearest tube station: Policlinico). Differenza Donna has five centres in Rome, the main one is on Via delle Tre Cannelle 5, tel. 066780537. THE PAINTER WHO LOST THE GAME TO RAPHAEL Lorenzo Lotto c. 1480-1 1556
A
t the beginning of this exhibition you are offered large altarpieces, already ambitious, with a certain rhythm that is not fluid, gradually getting more agitated and finally lucidly engaged and grand. You cannot draw your eyes away from the masterpieces of his maturity. Then there are his smaller devotional pieces, his allegories, some of them bewitching, and his celebrated penetrating portraits. Lorenzo Lotto was born around 1480 in Venice and matured in the shadow of Giambellini, Giorgione, Antonello da Messina, Titian and other Venetian masters. He was 30 when he was called to Rome by Pope Julius II, where in the piazzas and alleys he ambled in the company of his elders, Raphael, Michelangelo and Bramante. He was about to be commissioned to paint the great Vatican chambers, but somehow the enterprise fell through but why it did has never been specified and Raphael came to cover the walls with The School Of Athens and other frescos, the loosest, happiest and most airy of his whole career. Lotto, already known for his bashful, diffident nature, retired to the provinces, never to return to the focal centres of the art of his time again. But this was also a blessing: in the Venetian hinterland, in the Marches and Lombardy, his patrons, churchmen and aristocrats, although knowledgeable enough, were less demanding and allowed him to circumvent the stricter rules of picture-making, while the winds of the time also fanned the flamboyance of his visions. For Lotto was at the crossroads: there was his own naive streak of quirkiness, there was the end of the High Renaissance with its harmony and balance, and Mannerism was rising into full bloom, while the Baroque could already be glimpsed over the horizon. The classic cool was over. Bronzino, Rosso Fiorentino, Pontormo et al, mounted fervid extremely intricate work, with odd psychological, religious and political meanings we can no longer appreciate or decipher. Their pictures were full of voluptuous fluttering drapery, contorted elongated limbs, exaggerated gesture and above all, there was an intensity of colour never seen before: metallic green, over-ripe quince yellow, the pinks and reds of stretched satin, lilac and the sweetest of lavenders, swollen cloud blue, everything saturated by an impossibly keen, artificial illumination. But in Lotto’s case all that theatricality was counterpoised by tender landscape in the lower registers, peeking out underneath and behind the disporting personages like a mellow balm. There is the solemn polyptych of the Madonna Enthroned of 1505 from the Museo Civico of Recanati, still with a renaissance aura; the Transfiguration of Christ of 1512 from the same museum, with its rivulets of drapery in anemone-petal lilac; and the Madonna Enthroned from S. Bernardino in Bergamo of 1521, which is my favourite: the young bodies of the flying angels which hold up the Virgin’s cloudlike canopy are of an unearthly grace. The Annunciation of 1535 from the Museo Civico of Recanati is a droll fantasy: a kitten is freaked out by the invisible Holy Ghost, and the angel’s arm is out of kilter. Among the sacred and profane allegories, the most intriguing is Chastity Chasing Venus And Cupid (with a weasel on her shoulder) of 1530. There is Susanna Watched By The Elders of 1517 from the Uffizi, numerous saints in their own beautifully detailed wilderness and a row of exceptional portraits. Most of the configurations, grand and complex or contained, are mildly bewitched, the horrors of the real, and not holy, existence gleaming through, Wanted in Rome 27 April 2011
Susanna Watched By The Elders, from the Uffizi collection, is one of Lorenzo Lotto’s masterpieces on display at the Scuderie del Quirinale.
spooky, unsettling, revealing something poignant: the deep soul of an eccentric, a brilliantly imaginative loner. Some of us are still put off and irked by the decadence and bombast of Mannerism, its twisted bodies, its peculiar unresolved mysteries, its swollen draperies, its drama of high colour. We dismiss it just as the Pre-Raphaelites disliked the pomp after Raphael. However there is a new taste for it in the air as well, as the recent, immensely popular Bronzino exhibition in Florence showed. And it is not only sheer appreciation; young people now are filling canvases with huge, twirling figures and events larger than life. This exemplary comprehensive show has gathered work from major and provincial museums all over. For the occasion,17 works have been restored and cleaned by Italian specialist craftsmen, the best in the world, so that now the colour is back to its original strange intensity. A restorer in a lab coat and mask sits in a studio on site behind a glass door, wielding her tools with expertise and patience. From time to time she turns to us viewers, explaining with lips and hands what she has found to admire about the great secret Lorenzo Lotto. Edith Schloss Scuderie del Quirinale, Via XXIV Maggio 16, tel. 0639967500. Until 12 June. 7

ALESSANDRA GIOVANNONI In Cammino Until 18 May Outside is one of the most beautiful parks in the world, inside are pictures of this park, lush, mostly green, lavish. Also of wide public squares, busy roads and massed building blocks, palaces famous or not. And in exactly the right places, like splinters, like upright bricks, like exclamation marks, faceless people standing or moving, gleaming Romans in Rome. Giovannoni began in the 1980s as a sculptor, early on using a technique which deals with hunks of contrasts – solid mass against void. Then, brush in hand, she dealt with flat, Roman apartment house rooftops in muted light with ordinary hanging wash, with courtyards and humble household corners. Her work slowly expanded to the greater outdoors. She took in busy street crossings, the Galleria Borghese 2001. majesty of massive buildings, expanses of roads and avenues, pinned and stitched down by striding or stilled accents of people. The varied square of the Quirinale, where so much authority lived and still does, became one of her elective subjects. One, exquisitely honed down to its barest of elements, is my favourite. The equally historical Piazza del Popolo; and the many countless anonymous thoroughfares of a city that here has nothing to do with tourists. From the urban street panorama she went into parks even more lavish with the trembling display of contrasting light. As a Mediterranean she does not worship the sun, but bends its useful power to her own needs. Nor is her colour soft or too pleasing: the greens are almost black, there are dabs of butter and loam yellow, smoothness of cornflower and pond blues, and above all lashings of creamy white wreathing everything. In this splendid retrospective in mid-career are tiny drawing pads, a key to her perspicacious reduction of views. There are oils of earlier vistas, glinting pale and spare, busy or calm. In the end it is the wit of the conceptual conceit she has rigged up – the four panoramic versions of her favourite subject which lies exactly outside the very windows of the museum – that wins the day. Each example of The Fountain of the Round Pound is contemporary painterliness at its most superb. At high noon in 2009 and 2010 in August she faced horizontality with all its questions of shadow and whirling light, its wreath of pigeons, dogs, walkers, lovers silhouetted against weighty greens, cool blues and whites. With sage understanding she flung paint until she absolutely had it. One terrible long moment, then thick dangerous shapes at play, cancellations, and contrasts which stun and tingle. From far it looks like abstaction, but then all good art must be abstract. Alessandra Giovannoni offers you reality once over, wreaking painterly reality. The exhibition offers 100 masterpieces that serve as an overview of the history of European art and is divided into seven chronological categories. It opens with a section on early 19th-century German classicism and includes Tischbein’s famous 1787 portrait of Goethe in the Roman countryside, an image which became synonymous with the Italian Grand Tour. The French impressionist section features work by Corot, Courbet, Degas and Renoir, while the symbolist movement is perhaps the best represented, with paintings by Böcklin, Ensor, Moreau, Munch and Redon. Also featured are avant-garde movements that grew up around expressionism, and ground-breaking later work by artists such as Ernst, Klee and Picasso. LES BALLETS DE MONTE CARLO 28-3 30 April In Cinderella, choreography by Jean-Christophe Maillot. Under Maillot’s direction, Les Ballets de Monte-Carlo has acquired the reputation of a top class international dance company. His Cinderella closely follows Charles Perrault’s original tale. Set to a modified version of Prokofiev’s original score, the ballet retains its sense of fairytale magic with a surprise ending. But it’s a bit darker, and reinterprets certain characters, most notably by making Cinderella’s birthmother and her fairy godmother one and the same. Maillot also gives Cinderella’s father a larger role, and provides an unconventional take on Cinderella’s stepmother and stepsisters. Teatro la Fenice, tel. 041786511, www.teatrolafenice.it.

Two separate sections overlooking the Palatine hill and Circo Massimo may be visited: the upper garden with its collection of classic “old roses”, and the lower garden featuring this year’s competition entries and a collection of winning roses from previous years. The gardens are home to over 1,000 varieties including a green-blossomed rose from China. Last year’s grand prize went to a yellow longstemmed hybrid produced by the breeder Keisei from Japan. The Roseto Comunale is a short walk from the Circo Massimo stop on the metro B line. For information and free guided visits tel. 065746810. 10.00-19.00 May-June.
EUROPRIDE Another significant event has been added to the Europride Festival programme – an opera concert organised in cooperation with the Luciano Pavarotti Foundation. The Foundation was created by Nicoletta Mantovani after the tenor’s death with the double purpose of keeping his memory alive and helping young talented opera singers. Mantovani has decided to support Europride with this concert featuring bass singer Francesco Ellero D’Artegna, the tenor Domenico Tegliafilo, the baritone Luigi Cirillo and the sopranos Francesca Cappelletti, Antonella Tegliafilo and Simona Todaro, accompanied by the painist Paolo Andreoli. Meanwhile the Europride Committee has recently written to all members of parliament in an attempt to obtain political involvement and support. Some politicians have already started to back Europride and make statements in favour of equality and gay rights. Among them are the chair of the province of Rome, Nicola Zingaretti, the leader of Italia dei Valori, Antonio Di Pietro and the vice-chairman of the Partito Democratico, Ivan Scalfarotto. On www.europrideroma.com you will also find the recent video clips of support.
