ENRICO LUZZI Niente storie, 2010

olio su carta / 26,5 x 21 cm Enrico Luzzi has a little European boy’s hankering for the Wild West, a man’s longing for simplicity. He studied at the Accademia delle Belle Arti in Rome and began having solo shows in 1976, all the while working as a set designer for the stage and for films. His paintings are of homesteads, log cabins, stables, peopled by lone men in working clothes. Figures are not splendid but homespun in poses involving humdrum tasks or struggles. Shoes, song birds, cups with steaming contents, the groups of men, dwell in an immutable landscape, far from surfeit or gadgetry, not stark or overly friendly but beautifully plain and defining. Outlined with deadpan innocence, these images, ignoring our ferociously technological period, speak of the ageless ways of things as blandly and directly as fables. Other covers in the Wanted in Rome Cover Art series: 16 Feb, Simona Weller, Maschere in città 2 March, Bruno Ceccobelli, Lupa a Carne Vale 16 March, Alessandra Giacinti, Sunset 30 March, Paolo Gandolfi, Mundus 13 April, Luigi Ontani, Lapsus 27 April, Enzo Cucchi, Senza titolo

LOCAL ELECTIONS MAY 2011 The results of the local elections will give an indication of feelings about the government and the next general elections

C

ity and provincial elections are supposed to be about street lighting, potholes and rubbish collection but they rarely are. They are always a thermometer for the national temperature and sometimes a lot more. On 15 and 16 May, Italians will vote for 11 provincial and more than 1,300 town councils. In the contests where no candidate gets 50 per cent of the vote plus one there will be a run-off on 29 and 30 May. As part of a government economy drive, the number of councillors to be elected has been reduced from 60 to 48 in cities with more than a million inhabitants. The overall figures will be analysed with a soothsayer’s care for bird’s entrails to gauge support for a possible general election or government reshuffle. The two biggest coalitions are looking for an overall win: on the right there are Silvio Berlusconi’s Popolo della Libertà, (PdL), Umberto Bossi’s Lega Nord (LN) and their smaller allies, and on the left are the Partito Democratico (PD), Antonio Di Pietro’s Italia dei Valori (IdV) and Nichi Vendola’s Sinistra Ecologia Libertà (SEL). The relative gains of each party will be more closely examined than the overall vote to determine the strength of the present government and future coalitions in a general election. Particularly important will be what the PD, SEL and IdV poll on one side and what the PdL/LN divide on the other. Then there is the new centrist formation, Gianfranco Fini’s Futuro e Libertà (FLi), Pierferdinando Casini’s Unione dei Democratici Cristiani (UDC) and Francesco Rutelli’s Alleanza per l’Italia, which is standing for the first time and will have to prove itself. On the far left is comedian Beppe Grillo’s Movimento 5 Stelle, which could be important in some of the northern cities as an indication of dissatisfaction with the regular left. The most closely watched races, for their size and the personalities involved, will be in Milan, Naples, Turin and Bologna. Milan is a key election for a number of reasons. The incumbent, centreright mayor Letizia Moratti is not a hugely popular figure and though she will probably win, a first round victory is not guaranteed. More important than Moratti’s personal success is that Berlusconi campaigned personally. He is Milanese so wants his own city to be a symbol of his success; he is also being prosecuted in the Milan courts and has transformed the local elections into a plebiscite between himself and the courts; he is at the top of the electoral list for the PdL. His foreign minister and frequent spokesman, Franco Frattini, has explicitly compared these elections to Massimo D’Alema staking his prime ministership on the outcome of the 2000 regional elections, when D’Alema said he would resign if the centre-left lost. They did, and he resigned. Moratti is not likely to lose but it is just possible that she might have to go to the run-off elections at the end of May. Latest opinion polls gave her just 50.8 per cent of the vote with 17.2 per cent undecided. Berlusconi’s criminal trials have figured high in the Milanese campaign; after one of his court hearings, posters were put up across the city equating the Milan magistrates with the terrorist group the Red Brigades. There was an outcry and even some criticism from President Napolitano, the least he could do given the number of magistrates killed by terrorists in the 1970s and 1980s. Wanted in Rome 11 May 2011

Candidates for mayor of Milan, Giuliano Pisapia (left) and Letizia Moratti (right), at the end of a pre-election debate.

The author of the posters was the PdL activist Roberto Lassini, who offered to stand down as a candidate. It turned out that his name could no longer be removed from the ballot papers but Moratti said she would not accept him in her council if he were elected. Berlusconi, in contrast, made no open criticism (he too had called magistrates “terrorists”) and according to Lassini even telephoned to express his support. Bossi is also unhappy at Berlusconi staking all on his fight with the judiciary. But if the centre right has its divisions, the centre left is no better. Its candidate, Giuliano Pisapia (who rated 41 per cent in an April opinion poll), was chosen in a primary over the regular PD candidate. If he were to win, then the PD would have difficulty not to hold a primary for the party leader for the next general elections, with the real risk that Vendola would win over the present leader Pier Luigi Bersani. So the centre left is fighting the elections on potholes, rubbish and street lighting – anything but national issues. In Naples, not surprisingly, it is indeed a local issue, rubbish, which is high on the agenda and for that reason, the outgoing mayor Rosa Russo Jervolino is not popular. There are ten candidates – the important or interesting ones are Gianni Lettieri on the centre right, Mario Morcone on the centre left, supported by the PD and SEL but not IdV, which has its own candidate, the magistrate Luigi De Magistris. The FLi candidate, Raimondo Pasquino, will give a feel of how strong Fini’s party is. Then there is Clemente Mastella (UDEUR), sometime minister of justice and symbol of southern sleaze. A March poll gave an edge to Lettieri on the centre right with 32-36 per cent, but more to the combined centre left overall, with Morcone at 23-27 per cent, De Magistris at 20-24 per cent, Pasquino 8-12 per cent and Mastella a miserable 1-2 per cent. A massive 43 per cent remained undecided. In Turin, former minister and PD candidate Piero Fassino should make it on the first round, while in Bologna the centre left’s Virginio Merola will certainly win, but it would be a blow if it were forced to a run-off. Fini’s centre FLi could do well and needs to do so across the whole of the north if it is going to stand any chance in the general election. As an outsider, Beppe Grillo’s Movimento 5 Stelle civic lists polled 10 per cent in last year’s regional elections and could do the same again. The details will be important, but once again, as in most elections in Italy for the last 17 years, the main focus will be on Silvio Berlusconi rather than on the roads and buses. James Walston 3

NORMA: LOST AMONG THE CYCLOPES

The stone walls surrounding the ancient towns of Norba and Norma continue to inspire awe.

O

ur second trip into the lesser known areas of Lazio takes us into the Monti Lepini, a straggling rocky chain of hills some 60 kms south of Rome between the Apennines and the Mediterranean. For many centuries people believed that the enormous walls surrounding the buried city of Norba in the Monti Lepini hills had been built by the Cyclopes, the mythical one-eyed giants described by Homer in the Odyssey; it seemed impossible that the colossal stones could have been cut and raised by normal men. The walls, built without cement or mortar, encircle an archaeological site extending over 38 hectares on a high plateau that dominates the Pontine plain and have withstood 2,500 years of wars, calamities and neglect, continuing to inspire awe today. Strangely, however, Norba and its post-Roman “new” town, Norma, barely a kilometre away, are little known, despite being directly above the famous Ninfa Gardens. To get to Norma, you can take the Roma-Napoli autostrada, exiting at Valmontone, but we preferred to follow a longer, but quieter route, starting at the town of Velletri in the Castelli Romani, easily reached from the Via Appia Nuova and turning off at the Via dei Laghi after Ciampino airport. Once through Velletri, drive the 15 kms to Cori following the strada provinciale Velletri-Anzio (the SP 79/a) through a rural landscape of gardens, olive groves and grazing sheep in rolling green pastures towards the Lepini hills looming up on the horizon ahead. It’s worth parking the car at Cori and taking a walk through the old town, which has impressive Roman ruins, including the Temple of Hercules, a section of “cyclopean” walls similar to those we are going to see in Norba, and the picturesque first-century BC Ponte della Catena bridge. Going back to the car, follow the road in the direction of Latina-Cisterna, then turn left (Norma signposted) for the little-used Via Stoza that takes you up into the hills, passing Cori Monte on your left. A short distance after (500m), look out for the sharp right turn onto the Via degli Strammari. This is a special panoramic route through the Monti Lepini park, with sweeping views over the Lepini range, dotted with mediaeval citadels, and the Pontine plain to the Mediterranean, the promontory of S. Felice Circeo and the Pontine islands. The road is named after the stramma, a local plant once used for thatching that grows abundantly in the area. As you get nearer to Norma, you will probably start to see strange Icarus-figures swooping around the sky: these are the hang-glider enthusiasts from the Norma hang-glider club. The rocky heights of the Norma-Norba plateau offer ideal conditions for this sport. The entrance to the Norba archaeolgical site is through the original Porta Maggiore, the great gate, flanked by towering 12m-high walls and a circuWanted in Rome 11 May 2011

lar tower built of colossal blocks of stone. These walls, which date back to the fifth century BC, enclose the settlement and are considered to be among the best preserved of their kind in Italy. They measure a total 2.5 kms and vary in height according to the terrain. From the vantage point of the raised acropoli minore near the great gate, you can see over the entire site, with its paved streets and the excavated foundations of its temples, forum, dwelling houses, baths and a vast sunken basin, with an estimated capacity of 4,000 cubic metres, that contained the town’s water supply. Norba became a Roman colony in 492 BC. Its strategic position meant that it played a key role in warding off attacks by the rebellious Volsci peoples, who inhabited the surrounding area. The most tragic episode in the town’s history, however, was caused by the Romans. During the civil war of 81 BC, the Norbani unfortunately found themselves on the losing side and, rather that surrender to the vengeful victor, Sulla, the townspeople set the city on fire and committed collective suicide. The new town of Norma was built in the early Middle Ages, when Norba was finally abandoned. Norma has preserved its old mediaeval centre, with narrow twisting streets that revolve round its old castle and parish church, which contains a revered image of the Madonna of Refuge. It’s worth visiting the fine little civic museum, created some 15 years ago inside the former town hall building. The exhibition rooms have been imaginatively set up to give visitors an all-over picture of the ancient city of Norba. A series of projected images recreate temples, buildings and streets as they once were, illustrating the techniques used to build the walls, religious and military practices and a virtual reality Roman kitchen, while a 20-minute video in the frescoed council chamber recounts the settlement’s history. Down in the basement, you can see the town’s old olive oil store, with its enormous 18th-century terracotta jars still in their original place. From Norma-Norba the road winds steeply down to the plain in a succession of hairpin bends and leads to the celebrated Gardens of Ninfa, considered to be among the most beautiful in the world. The gardens, which are run by the Caetani Foundation, are open certain weekends between April and October. All information is available on its website: www.fondazionecaetani.org. 11 May 2011 Wanted in Rome

W

ith a bit of luck, now that the fine weather is coming, you’ll soon be invited for a ride in the country. And if it’s on a motorbike, you’ll love it. Motorcyclists in Italy refer to their wives or girlfriends on the pillion seat as la zavorrina. It’s an endearing term that doesn’t translate happily into English: la zavorra is, literally, “ballast”, but the -ina suffix makes it much more friendly and gentle. Perhaps the English slang “back-warmer” is kinder. Your first ever motorbike ride as a zavorrina might start out nervously, but if the biker up front is experienced and considerate, it will soon turn into a joy you’ll want to repeat as often as possible. There are few delights like swinging the bike through the curves of a mountain road (bikers swap tips about fun routes with lots of curves, like the “millepieghe” SR79bis between Orvieto and Todi), or safely and legally accelerating like a bullet up the open highway. Many compare it to horse-riding: the similarity is in the total oneness between rider and mount, the way the whole unit floats and sways with you an integral part of it, not a mere appendage pressing buttons and operating controls like those poor car-drivers (bikers call them “cagers”) you are leaving behind. Others say riding the graceful curves is like flying or swimming. So how to behave on the back seat? Here are a couple of fundamental rules. 1. Always, but always protect your eyes. A fly at 30 kph is painful. A fly at 60 kph can cause damage. A fly at 90 kph could temporarily blind you. Even if you wear spectacles anyway, always ensure your helmet’s visor is properly closed. 2. Don’t steer (even unintentionally) from the back seat. Except for parking or preparing to take off, a motorbike isn’t steered by the handlebars, unlike a car by the steering wheel. As soon as it is properly under way, a motorbike is steered by the shift in weight of the biker; the handlebars are allowed to follow, but they are not the primary means of changing direction. This means that every sideways movement you make will contribute to steering the bike left or right. If you need to retrieve something from your hip pocket, or turn around to look at something you’ve just rushed past, be aware that your movement will help steer the bike in a way the rider up front may not be expecting. And if you react to the tilt of the bike as it goes into a curve by trying desperately to stay upright, that will affect the steering, too. Simply relax, and follow the same tilt as the driver is making by staying aligned behind him or her, and make sure all your sideways movements are slow and deliberate so that the rider has time to adjust. 3. Always hold on tight. Whatever you are doing, you should always have at least one hand – better both – firmly gripping the passenger handles. If there are none (and that’s rare), your hands should be firmly around the driver’s waist. There will often be occasions when the driver has seen a traffic situation developing which you hadn’t spotted, and he or she will need to manoeuvre in a way you were not expecting. If this catches you unaware, you’re likely to find yourself swinging in a direction neither of you anticipated, with a disastrous effect on the steering. 4. Always get confirmation of permission to mount or alight. The driver needs to have both feet firmly planted on a reliable surface (no gravel or oil spills), and both hands firmly in charge of the handlebars, before you throw that weight around, even if you weigh only 50 kg. You very quickly get into the habit of asking: “On board?” or “Getting off?” and waiting for a confirm-

atory “OK” or a nod. It very soon becomes second nature – especially after the time you climb on board once without permission and then help pull biker and bike back up off the tarmac. 5. Enjoy it. If you’re still nervous and twitchy after the first 50 km, something’s wrong. Either the person up at the sharp end isn’t being considerate enough of your nervousness, or you’re not relaxed enough to enjoy it. Either way, one of you (or both) needs to adjust. Remember that a biker’s eye-level is considerably higher than that of a car driver, more like that of a van or truck driver, so he or she can see much farther ahead, over and around the cars in front, and calculate traffic flows far better. (Unless, of course, you’re on one of those racing bikes with the handlebars so low that you’re lying almost horizontal. But they’re not the best bikes for country trips in due.) Also, a bike will find a comfortable gap between other vehicles that a car driver would never consider, so an overtaking manoeuvre in heavy traffic is often perfectly safe, even though somebody used to driving only a car might think it foolhardy. A motorbike isn’t a moped. If you have the rare misfortune to be the zavorrina of a biker who shows off like a motorinista, cutting across traffic, doing wheelies, shooting the red lights, and generally doing his or her best to annoy and drive up the blood pressure of those four-wheel softie cagers unfortunate enough to have to share the road with you, don’t be afraid to say, “Thanks, but no thanks.” These are the rare riders mainly responsible for the bad reputation of bikers, and other – serious – bikers despise and avoid them. EXHIBITIONS DANTE GABRIEL ROSSETTI, EDWARD BURNE-J JONES Il mito dell’Italia nell’Inghilterra Vittoriana 24 Feb-1 12 June Rossetti (1828-1882) and Burne-Jones (1833-1895) were among the leading painters of the Preraphaelite Brotherhood, a movement which, much like the Nazarene Brotherhood in Germany shortly before it, burgeoned in England in mid-19th century. They wished to re-invent the clarity of line, colour and subject matter before the advent of Raphael, which had bewitched them in their fashionable travels in Italy. These Victorians wanted less fuss and wonders and complicated bodies and draperies, and preferred to depict simple, not grandiose, scenes from the bible and mediaeval history, to render their figures speaking and humble. Like most British art it has a literary bent. It is indicative that from Turner to today’s Damien Hirst the very titles of works are always an integral part of the whole, which always tells a story. The emphasis is on explaining things, hardly entering the adventure of exploring the elements of picture-making itself. The Preraphaelites remind you of fairytale-book illustration, probably because they were the first to be masters of it. But illustration simply explains reality and hardly ever transcends it. The two leaders of those who held sway in the movement are here represented in drawings, prints, large cartoons preliminary to oils, and oils themselves. They are hardly down to earth, nor are they stories without complexities. They show pink fleshy English girls with nests Proserpine by Dante Gabriel Rossetti at the Preraphaelite of shimmering auburn hair in clinging, sometimes transparent, glaexhibition in the National mourous gowns or night-shirts, and their protectors, shepherds and Gallery of Modern Art. knights in gleaming armour, languidly posing in banks of lilies, roses and pomegranate buds. Damsels in distress, goose girls, virgins, Ophelias, princelings and angels dwell in misty mauves, blood reds, metallic greens, wavering greys and brown purples. For those of us who have seen the Preraphaelites in English museums and wish to refresh our understanding of them, this ambitiously installed showing seems ambiguous and sometimes confusing – though the catalogue sorts it out excellently. The work has been brought from provincial museums and the holdings of auction houses mostly. And what are rows and rows of mechanical reproductions of Botticelli et al – colour lithographs mind you – doing here anyways? What makes the show attractive is the presence of the art of the masters presumed to have influenced the Preraphaelites: first of all there is a small saint’s head by Giotto, almond-eyed and quietly enchanting, tempera on wood. Then there are oils by Crivelli, Carpaccio, Perugino, Raphael himself, Titian, Tiepolo, Veronese – mostly moderate works, but interesting in the context. But you are rewarded by a deliciously blue, quite small, watercolour of Venice by Joseph Mallord William Turner; and two of his shimmering sundrenched sea and landscapes in oils. Also shown are Victorian Italians of the same period, close to the Preraphaelites: Nino Costa, G.A. Sartorio, Adolfo de Carolis and the symbolist Gaetano Previati – all endowed with a special luminosity. But give yourself a treat: rush to Via Nazionale and enter St Paul’s-within-the-Walls and enjoy a Preraphaelite in full glory: the Burne-Jones mosaics The Annunciation and Tree of Life unveiled in 1907. Here are your saints and angels in glittering splendour. G.RANDI N.UCLEI A.RTE M.ODERNA Until 12 June Note that G.N.A.M. (Galleria Nazionale dell’Arte Moderna) from its vast holdings of contemporary Italian art, which for a time was huddled together as in an attic, has recently extracted ten nuclei of works of their most outstanding artists. Now you can enjoy them neatly installed in large open spaces, each alone. The section devoted to Fontana is the most splendid, dominated by a kingsize red canvas, elegantly slashed in just the right places. Further there is influential and significant work by Burri, Gnoli, Leoncillo, Manzoni, Novelli, and by Afro, Capogrossi, Consagra, Guerrini. A pleasing reconsideration for stimulating fresh viewing. FLORENCE COMPAGNIA VIRGILIO SIENI 18 May In Tristi Tropici, choreography by Virgilio Sieni. As Sieni himself reveals, this work is liberally inspired by Tristes Tropiques by Claude LéviStrauss. The work unfolds in three parts in which the women, identified by Sieni as a “penultimate” presence, follow a philosophical and anthropological journey that conveys tenderness and nostalgia for what Lévi-Strauss described as “the west’s lost opportunity of remaining female”. Stazione Leopolda for the Fabbrica Europa Festival, tel. 055354077, www.fabbricaeuropa.net. CIE KARINE SAPORTA 25 May In Rayon X, choreography by Karine Saporta. The French choreographer, dancer, photographer, and short film director Karine Saporta says she founded her company in order to redefine contemporary modern dance. She has collaborated with artists like Peter Greenaway and Michael Nyman and her iconoclastic choreography is influenced by Indian dance and urban/hip hop dance as well as other dance forms from around the world. Rayon X, produced in collaboration with Fabbrica Europa, is an ironic reflection on eros and gender. Fabbrica Europa. Stazione Leopolda, tel. 055354077, www.fabbricaeuropa.net. See also Festivals.

MILAN BALLETTO DEL TEATRO ALLA SCALA 12-2 26 May In Jewels, choreography by George Balanchine. Legend has it that the great choreographer Balanchine was inspired by a visit to Van Cleef and Claude Arpels jewellers of Fifth Avenue when he created this ballet. The three-part work is a celebration of the golden ages of dance: Bournonville’s sylphs at the Paris Opéra, Balanchine’s own ‘babes’ from the American musicals and the glorious imperial ballerinas from St Petersburg. It is also a tribute to the cities he lived in, and to their respective romantic, contemporary and formal choreography. The music, from composers who lived and worked in each of the countries, ushers in the spirit of these three diverse

styles. The opening act dedicated to Emerald, and set to Fauré’s Pelleas and Melisande, is an evocation of France, the birthplace of Romantic dance, where Balanchine worked with Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes after leaving Russia. Then Rubies, set to Stravinsky’s Capriccio has the fresh and breezy, somewhat flashy style of the New York City Ballet and the carefree spontaneity Balanchine so loved about America. Finally Diamonds, a classical showpiece set to music by Tchaikovsky, in which perfect ballerinas in scintillating white tutus pay tribute to the work of Marius Petipa and the Kirov company. Teatro alla Scala, tel. 0272003744, www.teatroallascala.org. MIGUEL ANGEL ZOTTO 10-2 22 May In Puro Tango, choreography by M.A. Zotto. Born in Buenos Aires to a purely “tanguera” family, Zotto started dancing tango at the age of 17. He shot to fame in 1985 performing in a show by Ana Maria Steckelman which travelled throughout the world. He created his own company in 1988 and has become one of the best known names on the tango circuit and is the recipient of various international awards. Teatro Nuovo, tel. 02794026, www.teatronuovo.it.

VENICE ARSENALE DELLA DANZA 11, 13 May In Babilonia – Il terzo paradiso, choreography by Ismael Ivo. This new creation by the director of the dance section of the Venice Biennale is the result of five months of intense work with 25 specially selected young dancers. In its third year, the Arsenale della Danza project was created to give an impulse to creativity, especially in young dancers, and to help introduce them to the professional world. Developed around seven cycles of master classes held by internationally renowned choreographers and dancers, the project focuses on teaching the techniques that have had the most powerful influence on the development of contemporary dance, from the recent evolution of German dance-theatre to Afro-Caribbean rituals, from the American funk styles to the Brazilian martial art of the capoeira. Teatro Malibran. After its debut, the performance tours northern Italy. For info www.labiennale.org/it/danza.

Les vêpres siciliennes at S. Carlo in Naples is the French version of Verdi’s opera, first staged in Paris in 1855 amid considerable difficulties. Gregory Kunde takes the lead role here, as he did two months ago in Turin which staged the Italian version of the same opera, adapted by Verdi for Italian audiences immediately after the successful Paris debut.

NAPLES IL SEGRETO DI SUSANNA by Wolf-F Ferrari 5-2 26 May Conducted by Giovanni Di Stefano, directed by Francesco Saponaro, with Francesco De Giorni, Filippo Morace, Luciano Saltarelli. Teatro S. Carlo, tel. 0817972301, www.teatrosancarlo.it.

The Rome opera house is also staging a Verdi opera, La battaglia di Legnano to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy. It is one of Verdi’s lesser known works but is inspired by the events that led up to the Risorgimento. Interpreti principali saranno Gregory Kunde (Henri), Alexandrina Pendatchanska (Hélène), Dario Solari (Guy de Montfort) e Orlin Anastassov (Jean Procida), mentre il direttore d’orchestra sarà Gianluigi Gelmetti. EUROPRIDE A new interesting event has been added to the Europride programme: “Gaytech. Love at the time of IPod”. The exhibition will focus on technology tools such as internet, smart phones, social networks and online dating, showing how much impact they have had on gay life in the past two decades. The rise of the internet in the 1990s has meant major changes in the way that LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) people communicate and interact with each other. It has increased individual self-acceptance and diminished fear and isolation for gay people. It has made it easier for them to coalesce as a community. A recent American survey indicates that gays are among the first to adopt new devices and online tools. Keep abreast with Europride events in the next edition of Wanted in Rome. On www.europrideroma.com you will also find the recent video clips of support by the Italian singer Patty Pravo, a gay icon, and the three comedians of Trio Medusa.

ROME LETTERATURE 10° Festival Internazionale di Roma 20 May-2 22 June At its 10th, very successful edition, the festival that celebrates international writers and the written word returns to the magnificent stage at the Basilica di Massenzio. For ten evening events, the authors are invited to discuss and focus on a particular topic, and this year’s theme is History/ Histories. Writers read from yet unpublished works of their own and then, according to the chosen theme, proceed to explore the connections between literature and history and analyse the possible relations between literary fiction and historical fact. Two special events are scheduled this year, the first sees Russian-American Jewish writer Gary Shteyngart and Pavel Sanaev pay tribute to Russian culture (9 June): the second, on the final evening of the festival is a tribute to Elsa Morante, an icon of 20th-century Italian literature. The event on 16 June – a first for the festival – is dedicated to the five finalists of the important Italian Strega Book Prize 2011. In total there are 19 Italian and international writers invited to participate. Names to look out for include David Benioff, Margaret Mazzantini, Jo Nesbo, Clara Sánchez, David Sedaris, Wilbur Smith, Gay Talese, Xinran. Entry is free but tickets must be picked up at least two hours before the event begins at a specially constructed box office on Via dei Fori Imperiali. For information tel. 060608, www.festivaldelleletterature.it.

THEATRE TEATRI DI VETRO 19-2 28 May This drama festival provides a platform for experimental theatre and its many idioms. Organisers take the events out of the theatre and into alternative venues like squares, schools, cafès and parks, in an effort to involve a vast public and to give spectators and performers a chance to interact. In the past four years “Teatri di Vetro” has provided a stage to over 120 artists and companies. Teatro Palladium, Largo B. Romano 8, tel. 0657067761, 0657067766, www.teatro-palladium.it. SPOONFACE 17-2 21 May By Lee Hall, directed by Marco Carniti. This work was originally written by the young British playwright and screenwriter in 1997. Spoonface Steinberg, a monologue for a nineyear-old autistic girl dying of cancer, was first broadcast by BBC Radio 4. Lee subsequently adapted the play for television, and then for the stage in 2000. He was appointed Writer in Residence at the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1999/2000 under the Pearson Playwrights Scheme Award. In Italian.
