PUPILLO Finestra, 2010 You can catch him wandering attentively in the Campo de’ Fiori popular and populated inner city neighbourhood, a Roman younger painter born in Rome. He began exhibiting in 1985. He is probably the closest to abstraction of any of our group of cover artists. His work is loose and painterly, with creamy or chalky grounds flirting with wiry marks in a tasteful way, a bit like Fautrier or Wols in Paris. His planes and slates of handsome paint are travelled over by signs and portents, sometimes whimsical, sometimes sharp with signal painterly freedom. Here, we may imagine the wonderful look of a Roman wall basking in the noon sun, pierced by the manifold glittering facets of an opening of open morning window – a teasing semi-abstraction alive with subtle, constant invention. E.S.

FROM ROME TO MILAN Milan has lost standing to Rome in recent years but with Expo2015 only four years away interest will soon be moving north again

From the Expo2015 Masterplan. By kind permission of Stefano Boeri Architetti, Milano.

MONTEROTONDO Monterotondo is now a dormitory town for Rome but there is still a lively borgo

W

hen you drive north from Rome towards Terminillo, Amatrice or the Sabine hills, at about km 22 of Via Salaria you pass through Monterotondo Scalo (“Scalo” designates the part of a town, or sometimes a separate village, where trains or ferries stop). After this dismal, four km succession of strip malls, take-away pizzerias, car showrooms and a light industry park, you return to the greenery of the Tiber valley. Only for two very brief moments was Monterotondo itself visible on the hills to the right. From across the wide, flat valley, looking from the motorway to Roma Nord or from the train to Florence, you see the town far better. On its own little horizon, the Orsini-Barberini castle – now the town hall – raises its bright tower like a finger warning invaders from the north that the town is well placed to defend Rome. It expanded fast during the post-second world war boom years, and the industry zone at Scalo helped buoy the economy after the boom faded. The growth never stopped, taking the number of Monterotondesi from 10,000 in 1950 to over 30,000 today: it is a dormitory town for Rome, too and the double-decker commuter trains are packed to bursting every 15 minutes during the rush-hour. But all of this is of little interest to the casual visitor: the jewel of Monterotondo is its tiny but delightful centro storico or old town. Before the improvement of the road network and the affordability of more comfortable cars, in the days when Romans still made their weekend gite fuori porta in Cinquecentos and on Vespas, Monterotondo was a favourite destination for a day-trip. For the town was justly famous: the castle was briefly the seat of the Italian military high command in 1943, and after the September armistice the army – helped by a doughty group of civilians – successfully fought off an attempt by the Germans to retake it with 800 paratroopers. A pedestrian area with flower-beds and benches connects the 17th-century basilica of St Mary Magdalene, with its frescos, statuary and relics, to Piazza del Popolo – better known to the Monterotondesi as Piazza dei Leoni for the obelisk with its four lions spouting crystal-clear water, which people come from miles around to capture in plastic bottles. Here is the ubiquitous marble plaque celebrating Garibaldi’s seizure of the town in 1867 during his campaign for the liberation of Rome. A few paces up the obligatory Via Garibaldi lies Piazza della Repubblica, better known as Piazza dell’Orologio for the clock-tower of the old municipality and the cobbled pavement decorated in a sundial pattern. And all around these two squares lie the twisting, narrow streets of the borgo, the historic centre, with its mediaeval street plan. An unexpected open space between the Piazza dell’Orologio and the castle marks the spot where on a cold January morning in 1959 a building collapsed as a result of underground flooding; called Lo Sbracato, the area has been tastefully restored Wanted in Rome 25 May 2011

as a small park. In the vintage season, the alleys are filled with the enticing, acidic smell of the vats being washed out in preparation for another harvest of the excellent local wine. Much of the historic centre is taken up by the antique fair on the second Sunday of every month, between Porta Garibaldi, Lo Sbracato and the basilica. But there are other festivities, too, which attract the tourists: perhaps the best known is that of St Anthony the Abbot in January, when the statue of the patron saint of animals is carried to the basilica, accompanied by mounted jockeys and the town band. The next day another mounted procession visits all hospitals, clinics and churches in the town and parades through the historic centre. Quite apart from an excellent cultural programme of music, theatre and poetry organised by the municipality, other festivities include the Fasti d’Autunno (Autumn Glories) representation in costume of renaissance events in October, the Ciummacata snail feast in July, the broad beans and sheep-cheese feast, the spit of meat festival... the Monterotondesi are never short of an excuse to eat and drink in company. A propos, where should one eat? There is no lack of choice to suit every taste; here are just two examples. Popular with day-tripping Romans since the early 1900s, the family-run Antica Trattoria dei Leoni on the eponymous square serves Latium specialities from which fettuccine and skewers of lamb, bruschette and charcoal-grilled steaks are never absent. A blackboard announces the dishes of the day. In summer, if the square is not occupied by the antique fair, tables are set outside, and in the evening as the stones give back the warmth of the sun the candle-lit tables can be a romantic setting for dinner. Count on spending around €35-40 for a full meal with wine, dessert and coffee; closed on Wednesdays. Five minutes away on foot, at Via Oberdan 56, is something very different – an osteria of the kind which is sadly disappearing as fast-food outlets multiply. Marked only by a small, red and white flag at the door, the traditional sign for “red and white wine available here”, in a single room with eight tables under a raw vaulted ceiling Sandra busily serves the generous portions of robust workers’ lunches (no dinner!) which you can see her mother Anna Camilli cooking in the next room. Don’t expect to get a table to yourself: Sandra will fill up the free places in other tables so that larger groups will still find a space. Only two choices for first course and three or four for second, but all of it sturdy, tasty home cooking with their own olive oil, served with carafes of their own wine out of unlabelled demijohns and finished off with a coffee. A full meal with wine and coffee will cost you about €12-14; closed on Sundays and for three weeks in August. Geoffrey Watson 5

BRITAIN’S NEW AMBASSADOR TO THE HOLY SEE

BRITAIN

The new British ambassador to the Holy See, Nigel Baker, will take up office in Rome in August. His last posting was as ambassador to Bolivia and his previous appointments were mainly in Latin America and central European countries. Early in his career he was desk officer in London for Libya and Tunisia in the Near East and North African Department of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. He follows Francis Campbell who was highly respected in the Vatican and was instrumental in the success of Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to the United Kingdom in 2010. It was initially hoped that Campbell would have a high-profile successor but the FCO selected a career diplomat after advertising the position internally. Until Baker’s arrival the embassy, which is situated on Via XX Settembre, is headed by Chargé George Edgar.

VILLA STROHL-F FERN OPENS Villa Strohl-Fern, an important centre for many French and Italian artists in the 19th century and early 20th century, is open for guided tours from 8 May until 30 October on alternate Sundays. The 80,000 sqm villa was created by Alfred Wilhem Strohl-Fern, a German mother-tongue member of France’s nobility from Alsace, who purchased the property on the edge of Villa Borghese near Piazza del Popolo in 1879. He built his residence in an eclectic mixture of a romantic and neo-gothic style and in the several acres of surrounding garden he constructed studios later used by artists and writers such as Rainer Maria Rilke, Carlo Levi, Francesco Trombadori and Arturo Martini. The lush gardens are noted for their bamboo groves, nature trails and unusual, Nordic-inspired out-buildings. After Strohl-Fern’s death in 1927 the property passed to the French state and part of the complex is still used by the elementary school of the French Lycée Chateaubriand. The entrance is on Viale Madama Letizia (Villa Borghese) near the monument to the Iranian poet Ferdowsi, and visits are organised by the embassy of France and the city of Rome. Tours for a maximum of 25 people take place on alternate Sundays, with the exception of August, at 10.00, 11.30 and 15.00, by reservation only, tel. 060608.

IRISH STUDIES

FRANCE

IRELAND

A one-day conference titled European Perspectives in Irish Studies takes place in Università Roma Tre on 3 June. It is organised by the newly-launched research centre for Irish and Scottish studies, Centro di Ricerca Interdipartimentale per gli Studi Irlandesi e Scozzesi (CRISIS) established by Franca Ruggieri and John McCourt. The conference features young speakers, many of them Italian, promoting the fact that Irish studies are much to the fore among younger scholars in Italy. The guest of honour is the president of Ireland, Mary McAleese, in Italy on an official visit. The event comes after the Irish studies conference held in Turin in April and a broad range of topics will be discussed, including Garibaldi in Irish 19th-century culture, the reception of Joyce among Italian and European musicians, and Irish literature in times of crisis. Speakers include Antonio Bibbò from University College Galway, Ilaria Natali from Università di Firenze, John McCourt and Maria Domenica Mangialavori from Università Roma Tre, Laura Pelaschiar from University of Trieste, Barry McCrea from Yale University, Enrico Terrinoni from Università di Perugia and Aidan O’Malley from University of Zagreb. A representative group of the active members of CRISIS at Roma Tre will give brief papers as well as presenting a display of recently published books on Irish studies. President McAleese will give an address at 11.00, followed by a reception. Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia, Università degli Studi Roma Tre, Via Ostiense 234-236, jmccourt@uniroma3.it. 09.00-17.30.

CANDIDATES FOR FAO’S NEW DIRECTOR GENERAL The election of the new director general of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) will take place at the 37th conference of its 191 member states, which starts in Rome on 25 June. Each country has one vote for the director general. There are six candidates running. Franz Fischler, an Austrian, was the European Union’s Commissioner for Agriculture from 1995-2004. José Graziano da Silva from Brazil is the only internal candidate and is at present assistant director general and regional representative for Latin America and Caribbean. It is the first time that Brazil has nominated a candidate. Indroyono Soesilo from Indonesia is an expert in fisheries. Mohammad Saeid Noori Naeini from Iran is a veteran diplomat with a long association with FAO and its governing bodies. Abdul Latif Rashid from Iraq is an expert in water resources. Miguel Ángel Moratinos Cuyaubé is a Spanish career diplomat and was foreign minister from April 2004-October 2010. The candidate who succeeds the present director general, Jacques Diouf from Senegal, who has been in the post since 1994, will hold office from January 2013 until July 2015 and will then be eligible for one additional term of four years. Unlike in previous elections, there is no clear frontrunner. While there is a greater choice of candidates than usual (Diouf’s election in 1993 was not contested and he has had three terms in office), there is no obvious candidate to spearhead the fight against hunger, one of the world’s most pressing problems, or to lend new impetus to the long-heralded internal streamlining of this unwieldy UN body.

DOMUS AUSTRALIA IN ROME

THE WORLD

AUSTRALIA

Domus Australia, a pilgrim centre offering accommodation for Australian pilgrims travelling to Rome, is accepting its first guests in mid July after extensive renovations. The 19th-century building is a former Marist church and residence and is situated on Via Cernaia between Stazione Termini and Porta Pia. Acquired by the Catholic church of Australia, Domus Australia will be open to all but is aimed specifically at the Australian pilgrim community. Sydney’s Cardinal George Pell is behind the initiative which will offer accommodation for up to 90 guests, and inaugural rector Fr Anthony Denton hopes that the building will “encourage people to move from tourists to pilgrims.” The central altar is dedicated to the Virgin of Pompeii, while the building contains portraits of Australia’s first saint, Mary MacKillop, canonised in Rome last October, as well as Blessed John Paul II and Mother Teresa of Calcutta, painted by awardwinning Australian artist Paul Newton. During renovations construction workers discovered the foundations of a large Roman building, a herringbone stone pathway, a first-century sewer and Roman water pipes. The finds have been preserved and retained as part of the renovated development. Wanted in Rome 25 May 2011

This exhibition embraces Longsen's career from his early beginnings to his latest large-scale works made on rice paper. There is a special focus on the differences and similarities between eastern and western art. Longsen's works express the deepest essence of eastern spirituality. Through immersion and contemplation of nature, particularly of the high peaks that recall the grandeur of Chinese mountain landscapes, humans find their inner peace and balance and are reconciled with the world. If in the west beauty and art have always been linked to the concept of power and pomp, in the great Chinese tradition art was primarily an instrument of inner reflection and purification of the soul. OPERA

BOOKS NEW BOOKS PUBLISHED BY RANDOM HOUSE

OPERA NOTES La Scala is staging Roméo et Juliette by Charles Gounod from last year’s Salisburg festival. It is set in the 18th century but is blatantly influenced by the cinema. The French Canadian conductor, Yannick Nezet-Seguin, is making his debut at La Scala with this work. The opera season in Bologna ends with Rossini’s La Cenerentola with Daniele Abbado (son of Claudio) conducting and Michele Mariotti (son of Gianfranco) directing. Both were brought up breathing Rossini’s music.

DRAWING CONCLUSIONS by Donna Leon This is the new Commissario Brunetti novel, set in Venice. When a young woman returns from holiday to find her elderly neighbour dead, she immediately alerts the police. Commissario Brunetti is called to the scene but, though there are signs of a struggle, it seems the woman has simply suffered a fatal heart attack. Vice-Questore Patta is eager to dismiss the case as a death from natural causes, but Brunetti believes there is more to it than that. His suspicions are further aroused when the medical examiner finds faint bruising around the victim’s neck and shoulders, indicating that someone might have grabbed and shaken her. Could this have caused her heart attack? Was someone threatening her? ROME: THE COMING OF THE KING by MC Scott This is the second book in MC Scott’s new historical Rome series. AD 65. Sebastos Pantera, spy to the Emperor Nero, has undertaken the most dangerous of missions. Hunting often alone, with few he can trust, he must find the most dangerous man in Rome’s empire, and bring him to bloody justice. Against him is Saulos. Consumed by private enmities and false beliefs, Saulos is pledged to bring about the destruction of an entire Roman province. Brilliantly clever, utterly ruthless, he cares only for his vision of total victory – and not the death and devastation such a campaign would bring. Between them is the huntress Iksahra. Beautiful and deadly, feared by men, loved by the beasts she cares for, she must decide who to support if she is to avenge her father’s death. Fought inside the palace of a royal city and within the rocky fastness of a desert fortress, this will be a conflict between two men who have everything to gain – and a kingdom to lose…

CHILDREN MIÀ AND MIGÙ May-J June Throughout May and the beginning of June Cinema dei Piccoli in the heart of Villa Borghese screens this French animated movie Mià and Migù directed by Jacques-Rémy Girerd. As 2011 is the United Nations year of forests, Cinema dei Piccoli offers children a poetic and committed reflection on the environment. The plot tells the story of Pedro, who is forced to abandon his small beloved daughter Mià in his village to go and work in a distant yard where a massive luxury hotel complex has been built, devastating an oasis of rare beauty. During a clear starry night some mysterious forces of nature attack this settlement and a tunnel to take tourists into a valley suddenly collapses and traps Pedro. Mià has a terrible presentiment and decides to leave the village to look for her father. The girl overcomes rugged mountains and arid deserts inhabited by strange creatures. DANCE MILAN

ROME

BALLETTO DEL TEATRO ALLA SCALA 1 12-2 26 May In Jewels, choreography by George Balanchine. Legend has it that the great choreographer Balanchine was inspired by a visit to Van Cleef and Claude Arpels jewellers of Fifth Avenue when he created this ballet. The three part work is a celebration of the golden ages of dance: Bournonville’s sylphs at the Paris Opéra, Balanchine’s own ‘babes’ from the American musicals, and the glorious imperial ballerinas from St Petersburg. It is also a tribute to the cities he lived in, and to their respective romantic, contemporary and formal choreography. The music, from composers who lived and worked in each of the countries, ushers in the spirit of these three diverse styles. The opening act dedicated to Emerald, and set to Fauré’s Pelleas and Melisande, is an evocation of France, the birthplace of Romantic dance, where Balanchine worked with Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes after leaving Russia. Then Rubies, set to Stravinsky’s Capriccio has the fresh and breezy, somewhat flashy style of the New York City Ballet and the carefree spontaneity Balanchine so loved about America. Finally Diamonds, a classical showpiece set to music by Tchaikovsky, in which perfect ballerinas in scintillating white tutus pay tribute to the work of Marius Petipa and the Kirov company. Teatro alla Scala, tel. 0272003744, www.teatroallascala.org.

WAYNE MCGREGOR RANDOM DANCE 1 June In Far, choreography by Wayne McGregor. The critically acclaimed British choreographer has been described as the most representative artist of the decade, and the ten incredibly talented dancers that make up his Random Dance company yet again rise to the challenge of a techni-

cally exacting performance. However, after the success of his previous works, all focused on redefining what the body can do, Far, which is inspired by the choreographer’s research into cognitive psychology and by Roy Porter’s 18thcentury philosophical enquiries into the history of the Enlightenment, has been criticised as lacking in emotion. Auditorium Conciliazione, Via della Conciliazione 4. Booking tel. 800904560, www.auditoriumconciliazione.it.

Dancers from the Wayne McGregor Random Dance Company perform at the Auditorium Conciliazione.
