ENRICO GALLIAN dal Taccuino dei segni, 1993 It is fitting that our series of covers by committed artists in Rome finishes with an underground master of fierce impact. Enrico Gallian was born in Rome in 1945 and died here tragically in 2000. He loved his city, observing its above-ground, age-old texture and its hidden pools of pulsing, everyday life. With deep eyes and knit brow, kind and disturbing, ferociously vulnerable, he was as full of contrasts as his work. In his painting, both bold and shy in its attack, he developed an abstraction that deliberately cancelled and buried busy, bubbly writing – like marks under wide swathes of not very soothing white paint, a minimal approach. Twombly and Novelli were strong influences. Beyond his tangly, sprightly line marks and wickedly mystifying onslaughts of white, at times there are taut shreds of colour: bright skin of juicy red; true blue; full sunshine yellow; violent violet; colour which laughs like fruit. His friends were used to his humours, his tenderness and flaring moods. His fine poems, his beautifully concise and witty reviews and knowledgeable criticism of other artists. We miss him. His heart-piercing painting is rare and beautiful.

20 July 2011 Wanted in Rome
FINDING SPACE FOR ROME’S RUBBISH Rome’s landfill site Malagrotta has faced closure for years but the regional authorities are still struggling to find alternatives for the 5,000 tons of rubbish the city produces each day nd so the saga of Italy’s rubbish disposal continues. Much like an ongoing soap opera, the problems of where to put Rome’s new waste dump and treatment plant now that Malagrotta is said to be finally closing, as well as how to solve the refuse mountains in Naples, are almost daily fodder for Italian news channels. Naples, Italy’s third-largest city, produces 1,300 tons of rubbish every day and its problems – ongoing for several years – in collecting the mounds of putrid household waste that obstruct the streets in certain quarters of the city have been well-publicised. The spectre of Naples’ rubbish mountains hangs over Rome like the sword of Damocles, with the risk of the same situation occurring in their city striking fear into Roman citizens, politicians and officials alike. The complexity and political nature of Naples’ rubbish problem means that so far a resolution has not been reached – this too is worrying for the city of Rome, which produces far more waste than Naples, some 5,000 tons daily. On 30 June the government approved a decree that allows the refuse from Naples to be transported to sites outside the Campania region, stipulating that the bordering regions (including Lazio) will be the main recipients of the rubbish. The decree was approved despite opposition from Lega Nord ministers, one of whom, Roberto Calderoli, said: “This is not how you resolve the problems. Campania needs to build dumps and incinerators, just like everyone else.” However, the measure has been criticised by Italy’s president, Giorgio Napolitano, as well as Luigi De Magistris, the newly-appointed mayor of Naples, an ex-magistrate with well-known anti-mafia views. On 1 July President Napolitano urged the government to take further action to deal with the rubbish crisis and give local authorities greater powers. With the dramatic scenes of rubbish piles and protests – and in some cases youths allegedly also dumping garbage in Naples city centre on purpose, possibly as a way of discrediting mayor De Magistris – Romans realise that a lot is at stake if their own current refuse crisis is not resolved. Indeed, “becoming like Naples” is a phrase that denotes a worst-case scenario for Romans. Malagrotta is Rome’s only landfill site and is reputedly the biggest such dump in Europe. Just off Via Aurelia about 15km west of Termini station, it opened in 1984 and was first declared full and earmarked for closure in 2005. Since then its closure has been discussed but always postponed. In 2010, the president of the Lazio branch of the environmental organisation Legambiente, Lorenzo Parlati, declared the pollution levels at the site were at emergency levels, describing the dump as a “a time-bomb at the gates of Rome.” Now a new and apparently final closure date for Malagrotta has been set at 1 January 2012. Speculation reached fever-point as seven possible sites were identified as the new hosts of Rome’s waste facilities (the proposals include an incinerator, treatment plant and a smaller landfill site). The communities near each of the seven sites protested vociferously against being the chosen Malagrotta 2. As of 29 June, one site – Pizzo del Prete – has been named as the favoured. In the locality of Fiumicino near the small town of Palidoro on

Via Aurelia, Pizzo del Prete is about 30km due west of Termini station. On 2 July protesters at the nearby locality of Torrimpietra demonstrated with banners denouncing the proposed incinerator/treatment plants and landfill dump, while also denouncing Fiumicino’s mayor Mario Canapini, Rome’s mayor Gianni Alemanno and Lazio’s regional governor Renata Polverini. It remains to be seen whether Pizzo del Prete will eventually take Malagrotta’s dubious crown come 1 January next year, or whether Malagrotta will live to see yet another rubbish lorry. One thing is clear however: Rome cannot continue producing 1.8 million tons of (mainly nonrecycled) rubbish each year. According to Giovanni Fiscon, the director of Rome’s municipal environment agency, AMA, there is one solution to this unsustainable situation: “The increase of recycled waste is one of our most absolute priorities,” he says. But Rome still has a very long way to go before it reaches the approved target for Lazio, which is to reach a level of recycling 65 per cent of all waste by 2012. However, the situation is improving gradually. Fiscon says: “In 2007, the percentage of refuse sent to recycling was 17 per cent, and we reached 30,000 citizens in the door-to-door collection system. Today, thanks to the industrial strategy that we put in place, recycling has reached 24 per cent, as of the first quarter of 2011. About 420,000 people are currently included in the door-to-door system. To gain even more satisfying results, we need collaboration from the public. Interaction with people about the correct way to dispose of household waste is indispensable. One of the best sites for more information is www.amaroma.it, where we publish the “dove si butta?” guide to recycling.” Despite this apparently mammoth challenge, Fiscon remains positive that Rome’s waste problems can be contained with recycling and that the situation is improving. He adds: “In 2010, the total rubbish collected increased by about 45,000 tons compared to 2009, while the amount of rubbish going into landfill decreased by 12 per cent.” AMA, which employs 7,900 staff and collects rubbish from 3 million people in Rome and the surrounding area, already has infrastructure in place for recycling. It owns two waste treatment plants at Rocca Cencia and Via Salaria. These two plants process glass, plastic and metals as well as treating non-recycled waste to make waste-fuel and organic composting. Rocca Cencia can treat 850 tons of rubbish per day, while Via Salaria can treat 750 tons a day. It is clear that further plants will be needed to keep 65 per cent of Rome’s 5,000 tons of daily waste out of landfill. As for the communities near Pizzo del Prete and Malagrotta, only time will tell how Rome’s rubbish crisis will play out in 2012. While no one wants to live near an incinerator or landfill site, the onus remains on Rome’s citizens to recycle as much as possible. Fiscon comments: “These are extremely delicate and important choices that don’t fall within AMA’s remit, but within Regione Lazio’s. I am sure that every decision will be made with full respect for the environment and territory.” Bija Knowles For more information on recycling in your area visit www.amaroma.it.

The electric train goes from Piramide metro station close to the Ostiense metro, which should not be mistaken for the mainline station. The bus service leaves from EUR. Ostia first became famous and fashionable as a beach resort during the 1920s and there is some interesting architecture of the same period. But its history goes back to the early years of the Roman republic when it was the main port for the city. There are some private beach establishments but there is also a public beach. The sand is an unusual volcanic black. Ostia has a town and a marina. Fregene became popular during the post-war Dolce Vita years and is rather more select than Ostia, mainly because it is difficult to reach by public transport. It is north of Fiumicino and you can get there by car: take the autostrada or Via Aurelia towards Civitavecchia and turn off at Maccarese. There is a sandy strip of beach with plenty of private establishments and swimming pools, as well as restaurants and bed and breakfast places. It is also a good place for surfing of all sorts, as well as sailing. As one regular visitor says, the place has plenty of potential but doesn’t make the most of it. Maccarese. If you want somewhere close to Rome that is less crowded than Ostia and Fregene, then make for Maccarese. There is usually enough parking space and the atmosphere is more family-friendly than Fregene. There are restaurants and bars and there are private as well as public sections of the beach. It is just north of Fregene and like Fregene there is no public transport. Anzio, to the south of Rome, is a bit further away but you can get there by train. This is a charming small town and there are good beaches. There is a fishing harbour and ferries leave here for Ponza and Ventotene. For those who want to mix a bit of culture with beaching there are the remains of Nero’s summer villa and grottos to explore. Anzio was Nero’s birthplace and a favourite of Roman emperors. In modern times it was the scene of the tragic landings of the Allied armies in 1944 and there are moving United States and Commonwealth war cemeteries close to the town. But if you really want good beaches you have to go south to Sabaudia and Sperlonga or north to Capalbio and beyond to the Argentario. Gabrielle Bolzoni 5

DANCE ROME INVITO ALLA DANZA Igor Moiseyev Ballet 21-22 July Tribute to Igor Moiseyev. Igor Moiseyev was a master choreographer who created a new form of theatrical folk dance in Russia and whose troupe was one of the most popular dance companies of the 20th century. He died in 2007 but his wonderful troupe of dancers lives on. In 1936 Moiseyev was appointed dance director of the Moscow Theatre of Folk Art, from which emerged the Soviet Union’s first folk-dance ensemble. The troupe originally included many amateurs, but it soon employed professionally trained dancers. Although Moiseyev’s choreography derived from folk sources, he created his works for professional dancers. Most of them were inspired by the traditions of the various regions in the Soviet Union, but he also created dances with Chinese, Cuban, Sicilian and Argentine themes. Moiseyev attributed his dancers’ virtuosity and versatility to their training in classical ballet, which he described in an interview as “the grammar of movement.” Teatro Villa Pamphilj, Via di S. Pancrazio 10. For info tel. 0639738323, www.invitoalladanza.it. TANGO GALA: ABRAZAME TANGO 26-27 July An all-tango Gala evening starring some of the world’s most famous tango dancers from Miguel Angel Zotto and his new dance partner Daiana Guspero, to Roberto Reis and Natalia Lavandeira. A new creation by this Italo-African dancer and choreographer celebrates 150 years of the unification of Italy in a personal manner. Italia, la mia Africa focuses on the theme of integration between different ethnic groups and finds inspiration in Sungani’s own past, a medical doctor from Malawi who emigrated to Italy in the 1960s. Citarella is on stage with his La Paranza band. Teatro Villa Pamphilj, Via di S. Pancrazio 10. For info tel. 0639738323, www.invitoalladanza.it. experimental movement performed in an environment of altered gravity. After a master’s degree in economics and another in dance on “movement in space”, she completed her PhD in Paris on “Dance techniques applied to zero gravity flight; a dancer in weightlessness”. Her interdisciplinary approach to dance and science creates an insight into the relationship between humans and their environment. By appropriating the new conditions created by space travel she focuses on subjective verticality, continuous flow motion, the existence of an "inbetween" space in water, on a trampoline and in a state of weightlessness aboard a parabolic flight. THEATRE ROME THE SEVEN KINGS OF ROME by Denise McNee 24 June-5 Aug With The Miracle Players. Known for their wacky take on ancient Roman history, and hilarious yet informative re-enactments of the glories of Rome brought to life in an unbeatable setting. This year the group of well-assorted actors (who are clearly having lots of fun) tell the story of the lives of the seven kings who forged the foundations of Rome. As explained by themselves, The Miracle Players are “back with their old style but new jokes, explaining, amongst other things, how she-wolves get themselves into history books, why you should shelter during a thunderstorm, what happens when Roman kings neglect the worship of the gods and just who exactly is King Flame Head!” In English. At 19.30 every Friday in front of the Mamertine Prison at the Roman Forum. Entrance is free and booking is unnecessary. For information www.themiracleplayers.org.
SHAKESPEARE IN GLOBE 1 July-18 Sept The summer drama season at Rome’s Silvano Toti Globe Theatre foresees five plays by Shakespeare (all of them translated into Italian), and two study/workshops dedicated to texts by the bard. As usual, the artistic director of the season is popular Italian actor Gigi Proietti. The theatre in the heart of Villa Borghese is a full-scale reproduction of Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, copied from the original designs, and almost identical to the one that stands on London's South Bank. The plays this year are La tempesta (featuring well-known actor Giorgio Albertazzi), Pene d’amore perdute, Sogno di una notte di mezzestate, La dodicesima notte and Riccardo III. For information tel. 060608, www.globetheatreroma.com.
ROMA IN SCENA 8 July-18 Sept Throughout the summer this initiative sees a diverse programme of drama, music, dance and readings in many of the city museums and public spaces. The novelty this year is that all city museums are open to the public every Saturday evening from 20.00 to 01.00 as part of the initiative. Many of the performances have been selected from a public competition endorsed by the Musei Civici di Roma. For further information and for a full list of the events tel. 060608, www.museincomuneroma.it. L’ANFITEATRO DEL TASSO 25 June-3 Sept The long-running summer drama season at the wonderful Anfiteatro del Tasso is in the perfect stone amphitheatre overlooking the roofs and cupolas of Rome built over three centuries ago. Don't expect high quality drama, but a pleasant and relaxed evening with a sure bag of laughs. Yet again, this year's calendar forsakes it’s Greek and Roman tradition in favour of a more commercial offer which includes Stasera alle 21 by Achille Campanile and Leo Surya, and Per favore prestami tua moglie o t’amazzo with the Compangia La Plautina. For booking and information tel. 065750827, 3488240450, www.anfiteatroquerciadeltasso.com.
