HOLLYWOOD RETURNS TO THE TIBER

Tilda Swinton (left) and Freida Pinto, who stars in Trishna by Michael Winterbottom, are two of the film festival faces.

The International Rome Film Festival focuses on British films this year n receiving the Marco Aurelio award for lifetime achievement at the inaugural International Rome Film Festival in October 2006, Scottish actor Sean Connery joked that it was hard to believe the city had never hosted such an event before. He had a point. After all, this was the city immortalised in the films of Roberto Rossellini, Federico Fellini and, more recently, Nanni Moretti. Countless postcards of Anita Ekberg in La Dolce Vita and Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday are posted from Rome each year, perpetuating the city’s cinematic majesty in the eyes of the world. By the late 1950s, due to the proliferation of American movie stars waltzing down Via Veneto, Rome had earned itself the title “Hollywood on the Tiber”. Charlton Heston’s blockbuster Ben-Hur was filmed in the city’s legendary Cinecittà film studio, which later played cupid to one of cinema’s most talked-about romances when Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton fell in love on the set of Cleopatra. Fast-forward a few decades however, and a peek behind the scenery revealed that all was not well in Rome’s film industry. Big-budget international production companies were being lured away from Cinecittà by the prospects of cheaper conditions in eastern Europe, and Rome’s indigenous film sector complained that its movies failed to receive adequate exposure or win enough prizes at the annual Venice Film Festival up north. In 2005 Rome’s then mayor and film enthusiast Walter Veltroni announced that the following year Rome would launch its own annual film festival which, in addition to being a competition, would feature workshops, encounters with directors and behind-the-scenes exhibitions. All screenings would be open to ticket-buying filmgoers, and a jury composed of members of the public would nominate winners in categories including best film, best actor and best actress. This democratic approach was in stark contrast to more elitist festivals such as Cannes or Venice. When Venice learnt of Rome’s plan, it was apprehensive. Aside from a fear of competition, the real issue behind its opposition to the Rome festival was more likely related to funding. Established in 1932, and the oldest of its kind in the world, the Venice festival was struggling to raise funds to build a new headquarters, and was concerned that Italy’s ever-decreasing arts funding would be diverted from it and shared with its southern counterpart. Veltroni asserted that Rome had not sought any state funding but had gained its €7 million war chest from private sources, and insisted that both Italian festivals could exist in harmony. With the Italian premiere of The Departed as well as its veteran director Martin Scorsese confirmed, Rome received a major boost when into the fray stepped actor Robert De Niro, who announced that the fledgling Roman festival would be twinned with his TriBeCa Film Festival in New York. On 13 October 2006 the International Rome Film Festival opened, with Australian actress Nicole Kidman launching the world premiere of her film Fur. Speaking at the glittering gala event, Kidman strongly endorsed the world’s newest film festival, saying “the more [festivals] we have the better.” It was music to the ears of Rome’s organisers. Later that week Scorsese was joined on the red carpet by Leonardo DiCaprio, George Clooney and Monica Bellucci, among others. Festivities

centred around the magnificent Renzo Piano-designed Auditorium Parco della Musica, with screenings taking place in other venues like the former Metropolitan cinema on Via del Corso. In the four editions since then the festival has hosted many important film premieres attended by a stream of Hollywood A-listers, with the annual lifetime achievement awards going to Sophia Loren, Al Pacino, Meryl Streep and Julianne Moore. Richard Gere is expected to collect the prize this year. The festival’s audience figures climb every year, from 102,000 tickets issued in 2006 to 118,000 tickets last year. The 2011 festival, from 27 October – 4 November, is dedicated to the diversity of the United Kingdom’s contribution to cinema. Organised in tandem with the 55th BFI London Film Festival, Rome showcases seven newrelease British productions, most coming fresh from the London festival which finishes on the day the Rome festival begins. The films being screened in Rome include The Deep Blue Sea by Terence Davies, Page Eight by David Hare, Tyrannosaur by Paddy Considine, Wild Bill by Dexter Fletcher and Trishna, Michael Winterbottom’s lively re-imagining of Thomas Hardy’s Tess of the D’Urbervilles. A section titled Punks and Patriots comprises films that contrast the anarchy of 1970s Britain with mainstream productions, selected by filmmakers Joanna Hogg, David Hare and Terence Davies, writer Hanif Kureishi, actress Tilda Swinton (known for her icy roles as the White Witch in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, and Sal in The Beach) and acclaimed composer Michael Nyman, who won multiple awards for his soundtrack to The Piano. Two public meetings are scheduled: one with Terence Davies and Michael Nyman, and the other with David Hare and Hanif Kureishi, both chaired by English film critic Jonathan Romney. Punks & Patriots provides the inspiration for the red carpet’s design by Simon Lycett, known for his floral designs at the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton, and Four Weddings and a Funeral. In collaboration with London’s Chelsea Flower Show, Lycett creates an abstract version of the Union Jack by mixing metal with fruit and vegetables, uniting punk’s urban culture with the English penchant for satire. Turner Prizewinning Scottish artist Douglas Gordon presents his 24-Hour Psycho Back and Forth and To and Fro installation inspired by the famous Alfred Hitchcock film. Screenings and meetings take place in the auditorium’s five theatres – S. Cecilia, Sinopoli, Petrassi, Teatro Studio and Studio 3 – with other events in the Foyer, Auditorium Arte, Spazio Risonanze and Museo Archeologico. Appropriately, heading the jury this year is Italian composer Ennio Morricone, celebrated for his soundtracks to The Mission and Nuovo Cinema Paradiso. In addition to the glamour of London’s movie world descending on Rome, Woody Allen has recently finished filming The Bop Decameron in locations around the capital. It would seem that Hollywood has been returned to the Tiber. Andy Devane For further information see www.romacinemafest.it.

FESTIVALS ROME FESTIVAL INTERNAZIONALE DI FOTOGRAFIA 23 Sept–23 Oct “Motherland” is the theme of the tenth edition of FotoGrafia – Rome’s International Festival of Photography. It explores the relationship between photography and the land of belonging. Organisers say the choice of the theme is the result of an increasingly pressing need in a globalised society to seek one’s “motherland”. The festival’s international jury has selected 15 projects including five finalists and the winner of the 2011 edition. The works of the 15 selected photographers will be screened in the Macro Testaccio Museum, Piazza O. Giustiniani 4. For information www.fotografiafestival.it. For information www.viadellaseta.it. ROMAEUROPA FESTIVAL 7 Oct-30 Nov The title and theme for this annual arts bonanza is always catchy and full of promise. With the theme “Try the impossible” this year’s edition highlights the festival’s experimental and cutting edge. The 39 events that make up the programme range from dance, to theatre, to (mostly digital) music and visual arts and impressive is the line-up of artists scheduled to take to the stage for what has become Rome’s most prestigious and fashionable cultural event. The programme has been divided into five different sections: “Scene” dedicated to dance and theatre; “DNA” that stands for Danza Nazionale Autoriale and is a launchpad for young Italian choreographers with a different take; “Corpi Resistenti” dedicated to the dance scene in the Middle East and in northern Africa and with a focus on the Arab Spring; “Suoni” in which contemporary music merges with experimental rock, classical music and hybrids of music and poetry; and “Digitalife” totally projected towards technology of the future. The calendar is studded with big international names like Saburo Teshigawara, Peter Brook, Trisha Brown, Lloyd Newson and his DV8 Physical Theatre, Hofesh Shecter, Jan Fabre and Marina Abramovich. DANCE BOLOGNA NIGEL CHARNOCK 29 Oct In One Dixon Road, choreography by Nigel Charnock, for the Gender Bender Festival. The British performer and dance iconoclast, a founding member of the DV8 company, presents an intimate, tragically comic solo about his life, his loves and his death. NAPLES CAROLYN CARLSON 25-26 Oct In Immersion/Wind, Woman/Mandala, choreography by Carolyn Carlson. Carlson was one of Alwin Nikolais’s leading dancers when she left in 1971 to choreograph. Shortly afterwards, she moved to Paris. From 1975 to 1980 she directed and choreographed for a speciallycreated modern dance ensemble at the Paris Opera Ballet. Then she headed a similar new company at Venice’s La Fenice Theatre connected to the Venice Biennale. Well over 60, Carlson continues to innovate and create pieces charged with the personal emotion that is exclusive to her name. Teatro di S. Carlo, Teatrino di Corte a Palazzo Reale. ROME LLOYD NEWSON/DV8 PHYSICAL THEATRE 12-15 Oct Lloyd Newson’s latest work, Can We Talk About This? deals with freedom of speech, censorship and Islam. The production, which premiered this summer, finds inspiration in the 1989 book burnings of Salman Rushdie’s “The Satanic Verses”, in the murder of filmmaker Theo Van Gogh and in the controversy of the Muhammad cartoons in 2005. DV8’s production examines how these events have influenced multicultural policies, press freedom and artistic censorship. For Romaeuropa Festival at Teatro Argentina, Largo di Torre Argentina 52. For information and booking tel. 0645553050, www.romaeuropa.net. RAFAELA CARRASCO 14–15 Oct In Vamos at Tiroteo, choreography by Rafaela Carrasco. Vamos Al Tiroteo is set to a selection of popular Spanish songs originally recorded by Federico García Lorca with the flamenco star La Argentinita on vocals in 1931. Cloud Installation # 72503, Foray, Foret. Part researcher and inventor, part inspired artist and creator, Trisha Brown is acclaimed as one of the great explorers of postmodern dance. After classes at the Merce Cunningham dance studio, Brown and other students presented a free performance entitled “Concert of Dance No 1” at the Judson Memorial Church in New York. It was a turning point not just for Brown, but for the history of dance. The Judson Dance Theater, as the loose collective of performers came to be called, became a focus for the avant-garde, cross-arts movement of 1960s New York, and marked the emergence of what is now called postmodern dance. In 1970 Brown formed her own company and initially created events in non-theatre spaces (lofts, rooftops, rafts) but at the end of the decade she started to create works for the stage. In moving to more mainstream theatre, Brown also transformed it, bringing her own experimental and anti-theatrical ideas to the stage. Brown also works for other companies and choreographs and directs operas. In recent years she has increasingly exhibited her drawings. For Romaeuropa Festival, performances at MAXXI, Via Guido Reni 4 and at Teatro Olimpico, Piazza G. da Fabriano 17. For information and booking tel. 0645553050, www.romaeuropa.net. BALLETTO DEL TEATRO DELL’OPERA 19-30 Oct In Raymonda, choreography by Rafael Avnikjan from Petipa. Raymonda is the last of Marius Petipa’s three-act works still in today’s classical repertoire. The ballet premiered in St Petersburg in 1898 and, together with the lovely score by Glazunov, Petipa’s sophisticated choreography is often credited with ensuring the success of the work despite a weak and convoluted libretto. The story, in Hungary during the crusades, tells of the battle between a Christian knight and a Saracen warrior to win the heart of the noble maiden Raymonda. But the plot is really just a showcase for some renowned virtuoso ballet. Raymonda has remained in the Kirov repertoire, with numerous revisions over the years. There are also other notable productions including a version by George Balanchine for the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo in 1946 and one by Rudolf Nureyev in 1964. Teatro Costanzi, Piazza B. Gigli, tel. 06481601, www.operaroma.it. HOFESH SHECHTER 27 Oct In Political Mother, choreography by H. Shechter. The Israeli-born, British-based Shechter is a composer and choreographer. His focus is the uneasy subjects of war and terrorism and political resistance. His work has a primal directness without being literal, a powerful combination that tends to stun the audience. The music, Shechter’s own, includes rock, pop, Baroque and the strains of micro-tonal Middle Eastern music. For Romaeuropa Festival at Auditorium Conciliazione, Via della Conciliazione 4. For information and booking tel. 0645553050, www.romaeuropa.net. ITALIA – RUSSIA, GALA 2011 31 Oct This event is part of a number of cultural initiatives currently taking place as part of the ongoing “Year of Russian Language and Culture in Italy”. stars. There are many big names on the programme but the one that stands out is undoubtedly that of the splendid ballerina, Svetlana Zakharova, who has recently returned to the stage after maternity leave. The programme is a selection of solos and pas de deux from the classical repertoire, and reflects the two countries’ national cultural heritages. Teatro dell’Opera, Piazza B. Gigli. TURIN MAGUY MARIN 26 Oct In Salves, conceived and choreographed by Maguy Marin. The piece is described as a surprising and visionary creation, the expression of a choreographer who applies great ethical commitment to her work. At times it is shocking but it also contains much poetry. Salves is a political work conveyed with very quick moving scenes which culminate in an extraordinary battle around an immense, fully laid table during which the dancers throw sauces and paint. OPERA OPERA NOTES Bellini’s I puritani starts the season in a number of small opera theatres in north Italy. Its weak libretto is saved by the quality of its music, which requires top class singers. Jessica Pratt, one of the best belcanto sopranos of the moment sings with tenor Gianluca Terranova. The winter season in Florence opens with the little-known Věc Makropulos (L’affare Makropulos) by Leóš Janáček. Paolo Di Nicola
