9 November 2011 Wanted in Rome

Italy’s 15th national census is making headway after getting off to a confused and frustrating start

ITALY COUNTS ITS POPULATION o many citizens were eager to play their part in compiling the 2011 census – or perhaps just to get it over and done with – that on the first day the servers of national statistics institute (ISTAT) were open for business, they crashed under the onslaught. At one point early in the morning of 9 October, over half a million respondents were simultaneously trying to fill in their forms online, and the servers ground to a halt. One outraged capo famiglia told reporters he had spent five hours online, and had lost the connection a dozen times before managing to do his civic duty. The following morning queues formed in post offices around the country as frustrated clerks were unable to connect to the ISTAT site to print receipts for those citizens who preferred to hand in their completed forms in person. The confusion prompted consumer association Codacons to suggest a €50 compensation for the frustration and loss of time suffered. ISTAT president Enrico Giovannini apologised to the nation. The 2011 census is “the biggest internet operation ever planned in Italy,” he said, “and we had no precedents to compare it with. We underestimated the web traffic, and there’s no denying the damage to our image.” He pointed out that the UK and Portugal had had similar problems with their online census, and also suggested that some people may have mistaken 9 October – the reference date for the situation in the household when replying to the questions – for the deadline for delivering the replies. Telecom Italia has meanwhile improved the connectivity of the dedicated census website censimentopopolazione.istat.it, so that those eager to try the thrill of their first census by keyboard and mouse are now finding the servers ready for them. By the end of the first week, ISTAT announced with barely-concealed relief that five million families had already replied, either by internet or by handing in the printed forms; only some 20 million left to go. ISTAT has reassured families that there’s no rush – for now. There’s still time to reply, at least up to 20 November when official interviewers will begin their rounds. In Rome alone, almost 2,000 interviewers, backed up by almost 300 coordinators and 28 heads of local centres, will begin knocking on the door of every household not crossed off their list as having already replied. Even after this date, there’s still time to do it yourself before the interviewers arrive and ask to see your receipt: in the smallest comuni, the deadline is 31 December, for those of between 20,000 and 150,000 inhabitants it’s 31 January, and in the larger cities like Rome, 29 February. In all cases, the replies can be handed in online, or in person at any post office (but not dropped in the letterbox – that doesn’t provide a receipt!) or in any of the collection centres set up in town halls and circonscrizioni. You can find the collection point most convenient for you on the census website, or by calling the toll-free number 800069701. This time around the census form is particularly long and complicated, so much so that many have complained that it is difficult to understand. ISTAT has rejected this criticism, pointing out that there is help available for every doubt. For those with internet access, it says, the dedicated site provides a

S

wealth of guidance, from a series of explanatory videos to online guides in 20 languages. There are even copies of the questionnaire also in 20 languages on the website, but these may be used only for guidance: the original, Italian form is the one that must be filled in and submitted. If you take your form to one of the collection centres, the staff will check it with you and help with any queries. And these centres are open for much longer than the usual town hall working hours for public access. The doorto-door interviewers are also trained to provide guidance in filling in the replies. And finally, the toll-free number is available from 08.00 to 22.00 every day until 29 February (except for Christmas and New Year’s Day) to answer questions of any kind – it could hardly be easier, they say. So what is new in this 15th national census, apart from the introduction of online responses? This is the first time the questionnaires have been delivered by post to households. Then there are two versions of the questionnaire, the full version with 84 questions and the shorter one with “only” 35, sent to about one-third of families in provincial capitals or other towns with over 20,000 inhabitants, where there are enough statistical data available for ISTAT to be able to estimate reliably some data and to concentrate its questions on the rest, and thus reduce the workload for the population as a whole. And commentators have pointed out that, among the many questions about your property and lifestyle, for the first time in Italy there is a question about same-gender partners. Alessio De Giorgi, president of the portal gay.it, exulted; “After a series of appeals and contacts with ISTAT, we finally succeeded in having our reality recognised.” But there are other novelties, too. Italy’s first census in 1961 under King Vittorio Emanuele cost 640,000 lire, or 13 centesimi for each of the 21,777,334 subjects counted. This year’s 15th General Census of the Population and the Living Quarters, to give it its formal title, will cost €590 million, or about €10 for every member of the population, Italian or foreigner – slightly more than the UK census at €8.70, but considerably less than in the US, at €34.40 per head. Taking part in the census is obligatory by law, and refusing or neglecting to give full and correct answers can incur a fine of between €206 and €2,066. The census has, of course, inspired the usual criminals who prey particularly on the elderly, and there have already been the first reports of persons claiming to be census interviewers to gain entry to homes with a view to theft, some already successful. All genuine interviewers will of course be issued with official identification, and anybody in doubt of the identity of someone claiming to be an interviewer should contact the toll-free number for advice before admitting them to their home. All replies to the questionnaire, of course, are protected by the laws on privacy of the individual. ISTAT is not allowed to pass data on to any other institution or person, and may use replies only to produce statistical tables which make any reference to identifiable persons impossible. Tivoli is famous for Villa d’Este and Hadrian’s Villa, but it also has other attractions ot many people realise that in the 19th century, Tivoli had a visitor attraction that surpassed Hadrian’s Villa and Villa d’Este. But when artists, poets and writers of the Romantic era visited the town during the Grand Tour, the first place they wanted to see was another garden – a garden carved out of a chasm that ran down the side of the Great Cascade of the Aniene river. The Villa Gregoriana was created by Pope Gregory XVI in 1832 as a public park and had all the requisites of the ideal Romantic environment. It was a wilderness garden, plunging steeply down into a ravine, filled with secret grottoes, old Roman ruins, thick Mediterranean vegetation, pools and frothing cataracts, dominated by the sound of the crashing waters of the 120mhigh waterfall. Throughout the 20th century, however, this treasure was largely forgotten. The area suffered bomb damage during the last war and was totally abandoned. In 2002, the park was taken over by the Fondo Ambiente Italiano (FAI), an organisation similar to the British National Trust. It was in such a bad state that it required a mammoth landscape recovery operation. FAI volunteers collected five tons of rubbish that had been dumped over the years, including washing machines and old television sets, 1,200 tons of rubble and 350 tons of fallen branches and leaves. They restored 750 old stone steps and pruned or replanted 2,300 trees. The villa was reopened to the public in 2005. To reach the Villa Gregoriana, you go through Tivoli, past the mediaeval fortress and along the riverside. The villa is just beyond the hydro-electric dam, on the fringe of the most interesting and picturesque part of the town, with winding mediaeval streets, archways, artisan workshops and the two celebrated Roman temples (prominently featured in Tivoli tourist brochures) crowning the rock of the ancient acropolis – one believed to be dedicated to Tibertus, the town’s mythical founder, and the other to Albunea, the Sybil Tiburtina, credited with prophesying the birth of Christ. The temples stand directly above the garden, and the destiny of the three are linked. Originally, the Aniene river plunged out of Neptune’s Grotto, a fissure in the rocks directly beneath the temples, causing havoc in the plain below whenever the river burst its banks. On 17 November 1826 a bad flood destroyed much of the town and the ruling Pope Pius VIII decided that something had to be done. A daring solution was eventually proposed by Italian architect Clemente Folchi, who altered the course of the river, channelling it into twin 280m-long tunnels dug through the nearby Mt Catullo. Pius’ successor, Gregorio XVI, presided over the lavish inauguration ceremony, which featured a spectacular display of fireworks issuing like flames from the tunnels’ mouths. Later, the project became part of a hydro-electric system that made Tivoli the first Italian town to have electric lights. You have to be fairly fit to descend into the depths of the park, and comfortable, non-slip shoes are a must. It is all flights of steep stone steps, uneven ground and twists and turns. However, the experience is worth the slog. Panoramic terraces give onto spectacular views. You pass places of interest, such as the ruins of the first-century Roman Villa of Manlio Volpiscus, described in rapturous terms by Roman writers Horace and Statius. Walk through the spooky Percorso Moillis, a passage cut through the side of the rock in 1809 to give artists and other visitors easier access to the chasm. Hitherto, they had had to be lowered down on ropes. These days, paths run right down to the bottom, known as the “Valley of Hell” and traversed by a series of pools and rivulets, fed by the waterfall crashing down from above. The hauntingly beautiful “Mermaids’ Cave”, sonamed by French artist Louis Ducros, channels the water into a crystalclear rock pool and then off into further unseen depths.

TIVOLI’S WILDERNESS GARDEN A waterfall plunges down a 120m drop into the Valley of Hell at the Villa Gregoriana.

By the time you have finished the hour and a half tour, you’ll be glad of some kind of refreshment, which you can have either at the FAI-run bar beside the Tibertus Temple or at the adjacent Michelin-starred Sibilla restaurant, which is one of the oldest restaurants in the world and a site in its own right. Its spacious terrace beside the circular Temple of the Sybil overlooks the waterfall and is shaded by an enormous, 200 year-old wisteria. The walls are covered with marble plaques commemorating the visits of the crowned heads of Europe and other eminent guests. To mention just a few: Charles and Elizabeth, Prince and Princess of Prussia came with Princess Margherita of Savoy in 1877, the Queen of Sweden was here in 1918, the Infante of Spain dined in 1969, Princess Margaret of Britain (the present queen’s late sister) in 1965, and in 1999 Duchess Zelda Marzec, Grand Dame of the Order of Malta, celebrated her birthday here. The restaurant has belonged to the La Caita-Frittella family since 1980. The present generation, Simone Frittella and Andrea La Caita, are keen on promoting local produce and regional specialities and offer a choice of set lunch menus, very reasonably priced. JESSICA PRATT: THE SOPRANO WHO CAME IN FROM THE ORCHESTRA essica Pratt is a promising Australian soprano whose career is unfolding mainly in Italy: in the traditional theatres of Lombardy, at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala, Venice’s La Fenice, the Teatro Comunale in Florence and the Rome Opera House. Her next engagements will be Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor in Naples in February next year, Bellini’s I Capuleti e i Montecchi and Halevy’s La Juive in Salerno and Bernstein’s Candide in Rome in January. This summer saw her début in the Rossini Opera Festival in Adelaide di Borgogna with Daniela Barcellona, a success crowned by an ovation after the great second-act aria Cingi la benda candida, a difficult piece requiring a virtuoso voice full of pathos. Wanted in Rome’s opera expert Paolo Di Nicola talks to Pratt during the rehearsals for Adelaide di Borgogna at the Rossini festival.

J

How did you come to be a singer? My father sings tenor; as a child I used to listen to the lessons he gave to students, and I discovered I liked doing what he taught. When I told him I wanted to be a singer, he said yes on condition that I first spent ten years studying the trumpet. So I studied that instrument from the age of seven up to 18 to develop my breathing to gain familiarity with respiration and make it become a natural, normal element in my singing so I can use it without even thinking about it. Studying the trumpet was also useful because I played in an orchestra, and that forces you to work closely with the other instrumentalists, so that when you are on stage you remember to sing accurately together with the other singers. When did your real singing studies start? I registered with the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, but I wasn’t satisfied: you don’t learn much in one or two lessons a week together with other students, you need a private teacher who can prepare you properly. So I got a job as a secretary and spent everything I earned on private lessons. I chose the best teachers, the ones that were right for me, and studied Italian, French, German, prose, dancing, the Alexander technique for psychotherapy, and of course also the other subjects you always take in a conservatory. What happened when you graduated? I met the conductor Gianluigi Gelmetti in 2005 at a singing competition, and he offered me a bursary to come to Rome Opera House to polish my technique. I followed all his rehearsals from morning to night, and was able to improve my Italian, even if I’ve learned some words with an accent that’s a little too romanaccio (laughs). After that I took a two-year course of Opera Studio at the S. Cecilia National Academy (a top-level finishing course in operatic singing for young performers). This was the first time I went on stage, and I had Renata Scotto for a teacher. It was a tremendous experience to meet her: we didn’t work on vocal technique but more on phrasing, accents and the coloratura of how how to represent best the character I was playing. It was a very important way of working which has helped me a lot in my career. When was your real start in theatre? I started in 2007 with Lucia di Lammermoor by Donizetti at the Como Teatro Sociale for the As.Li.Co. (The Associazione Lirica e Concertistica, which trains and promotes young talent in the field of opera, with opportunities to launch them in the most important Italian opera houses – ed.). I’m very grateful to this association, which let me make my début in a real theatre, because it gave confidence to a 28-year-old who was having trouble finding engagements. Wanted in Rome 9 November 2011

With them I also played Amina in Bellini’s La Sonnambula last year, and in November I’ll play Elvira in I Puritani, also by Bellini. I was so pleased that I finished up living in Como. What is your repertoire at the moment? Rossini, Bellini and Donizetti. I would be happy if I could spend my life singing only their works. Right now, in fact, I am working only on these composers and I’m going to Jessica Pratt (right) in Adelaide di Borgogna at this year's Rossini Festival. try carrying on doing so. In the future I shall also sing Verdi, but there’s no hurry (up to now I have only played Gilda in Rigoletto at the Baths of Caracalla in Rome): for the moment I’m staying only with bel canto works which I find suitable for my voice as it is now, able to handle smorzamentos and the very high range. What characters would you like to play? I choose characters that thrill me, that captivate me, and if I don’t feel they are mine then I drop them. I recently played the Queen of the Night in Mozart’s Zauberflöte at Covent Garden in London with Colin Davis, but I don’t like it, it doesn’t feel like me. Who is your favourite character? Lucia di Lammermoor. Because I’m totally crazy too! Joking aside, for me Lucia isn’t a melancholy character who lives for love and goes crazy when it’s denied her, but rather a woman with a strong character who stands up to the adversities of life with strength and courage, marrying a man she doesn’t love out of duty to her family; then she really goes mad, it’s true, but it’s an extreme gesture of liberation, an impulse of the soul, an action rather than a resignation, a passive yielding to events greater than herself. And then there’s the music, which is beautiful: the sextet Chi mi frena is one of the most beautiful passages ever written by Donizetti, and it’s a joy to sing. I also like Elvira in I Puritani and Desdemona in Rossini’s Othello, both of them women of character who sing wonderful music. How do you prepare to play these characters you love? First of all with a good technique, which you have to keep trained. I study and do my exercises every day, because without constant, daily preparation you can lose everything: you can sing for a few years, but then you finish up losing your voice, and then goodbye career. With this technical training I tackle the role to sing, starting with the music: I take the score and learn it all without a break, alone and calmly. Then I go to the pianist and my trainer and start to study it together in detail, look at it in depth. And last I listen to colleagues to get new ideas and discover other aspects of the role. To finish, how are your relations with the critics? I never read the reviews after the first night, so that I don’t get influenced. I read them only at the end of the performances, with a clear head, a distance and a sense of critique, to feel rewarded by praise but also to pick up the advice a critic can give you by spotting what didn’t work in a performance or in the technique, and always to improve at being a soprano who can faithfully interpret the composer. Paolo Di Nicola 7

SOCIALIST REALISM Soviet painting 1920-1970 11 Oct-8 Jan The Palazzo delle Esposizioni presents the most comprehensive exhibition of Socialist Realism ever held outside Russia. The movement, which extolled socialism through realistic visual art, began in the Soviet Union and became a dominant style in other communist countries. The statebacked movement encouraged traditional artistic methods, and although it drew some inspiration from both classical and contemporary aspects of European art, it swam against the global tide of 20th-century modernism. The exhibition follows its development from the end of the civil war through to the Brezhnev era, ending at the beginning of the 1970s when the movement slowly began to lose steam. Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Via Nazionale 194, tel. 0639967500, www.palazzoesposizioni.it. 10.00-20.00, Fri-Sat 10.00-23.00. Mon closed. ALEKSANDR RODČENKO 11 Oct-8 Jan The work of Russian avant-garde artist Aleksandr Rodčenko (1891-1956) comes to Rome on loan from the House of Photography in Moscow, whose director Olga Sviblova curates this exhibition. Although primarily known as a photographer, Rodčenko was adept at painting, design, theatre, cinema and graphic art, and was a leading light in the intellectual and artistic circles of Russia’s 20thcentury avant-garde movement. Rodčenko revolutionised the medium of photography, trading its

documentary role to a means of expressing intellectual theories and constructivist ideology. His work was not appreciated by the Soviet regime however and by the end of the 1930s he toned it down to suit the aesthetic principles of Socialist Realism. 300 of his works are on show at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Via Nazionale 194, tel. 0639967500, www.palazzoesposizioni.it. 10.0020.00, Fri-Sat 10.00-23.00. created over a period of 60 years. The show illustrates the significance of Napoleon for Koppelman, painter, sculptor, print maker and one of the earliest students of Aesthetic Realism. Koppelman (1920-2009) painted Napoleon into the 20th century, entering New York, and enjoying the beach at Coney Island, showing his human fragility. FESTIVAL TEMPORANEO 13-28 Nov Organised in conjunction with the Austrian Cultural Institute this art event asks the questions “How can the evolution of a city be told? How do you make room for modernity in a historically connoted urban texture?” Four works by young Italian artists exhibited in public spaces temporarily modify the urban landscape, breaking the usual relationship with public space and those who use it. Temporaneo is an opportunity to rethink the concept of monument in order to remodel the places we live in. Installations at Parco della Musica, Roma Tre University, Casa del Jazz and the Laghetto in EUR. For information www.temporaneoart.org. ROMAEUROPA FESTIVAL 7 Oct-30 Nov The title and theme for this annual arts bonanza is always catchy and full of promise.

With the theme “Try the impossible” this year’s edition highlights the festival’s experimental and cutting edge. 39 events make up the programme that ranges from dance, to theatre, to (mostly digital) music and visual arts in what has become Rome’s most prestigious and fashionable cultural event. The programme is divided into five different sections: “Scene” dedicated to dance and theatre; “DNA” that stands for Danza Nazionale Autoriale and is a launch-pad for young Italian choreographers with a “different” take; “Corpi Resistenti” dedicated to the dance scene in the Middle East and in northern Africa and with a focus on the “Arab Spring”; “Suoni” in which contemporary music merges with experimental rock, classical music and hybrids of music and poetry; and “Digitalife” totally projected towards technology of the future. Events take place in different venues including some recently-renovated former industrial spaces like the Carrozzeria Maercar, the Opificio and even a city swimming pool. If you intend buying tickets for a number of events, Romaeuropa offers a series of fidelity discounts. For further information and booking, www.romaeuropa.net. ROME A MAGIC FLUTE by Mozart 17-27 Nov Brook has always displayed an interest in Mozart and this production of A Magic Flute is his third re-elaboration on Mozart’s work after his The Marriage of Figaro and Don Giovanni. Here Brook revisits Mozart’s score with the collaboration of the composer and pianist Franck Krawczyk and the text with playwright Marie-Hélène Estienne. Brook’s approach stems from his long-standing relationship with the Royal Shakespeare Company and like its predecessors, A Magic Flute drastically strips down the original: the whole work, played without a break, lasts just 90 minutes, the youthful cast is reduced to seven singers and two actors, and the orchestra replaced by a piano part arranged and played by Krawczyk. The set is a collection of vertical canes, constantly moved into new configurations, there are few props, and the costumes are a mix of western and vaguely oriental. The aim, Brook

says, is to produce a "light effervescent Flute, where an intimacy with the performers will allow the tenderness and the depth of the score to appear". OPERA NOTES Riccardo Muti has been appointed honourary director for life at Rome’s Teatro dell’ Opera. This means that Muti will have a deciding say over musical and artistic programming and productions at the capital’s opera house “for life”. He is expected to conduct a number of operas each year but under the conditions of his appointment there does not appear to be a precise obligation to do so. However in the 2011-2012 season he will conduct the opening work, Macbeth by Verdi (27 Nov-11 Dec) and then Attila by Verdi (27 May-5 June) next year. Macbeth is a slightly modified version of the Peter Stein production in Salisburg this summer. Paolo Di Nicola

ENGLISH THEATRE OF ROME 30 Oct-13 Nov On the surface, The Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers is a story about lost opportunities of a small town and its people during the Great Depression.
