NEW FACES IN AN OLD PARLIAMENT Governments come and go (even if the last one did take longer than most to pack its bags) but the arrival of the present one (Mario Monti’s first) left three distinct impressions on me. The relief at seeing new and dignified faces on the government benches at last was tempered by a sense of unease at not being able to put a name to more than a handful of these politically-inexperienced men and women. The second was to agree with Pier Luigi Bersani, head of the Partito Democratico, that when Italy puts its mind to it, the country does things more speedily and with more determination than most. The third was to reflect again that Italy’s two houses of parliament, as well as its government offices, are perhaps the only ones in Europe, maybe even in the world, that are not shut off behind railings. In how many countries can you find young people sitting on the back steps of the lower house of parliament (Piazza del Parlamento) enjoying the late evening sun? It is also a comforting feeling for Romans that they can rub shoulders with their politicians. However it must have been uncomfortable for Silvio Berlusconi when he had to sneak out of the back door of Palazzo Chigi on his way to give his resignation to the president of the republic at the Quirinale. It is a reminder that all who enter parliament and government offices, elected or otherwise, are in very close contact with the voters outside. But Berlusconi’s exit was also a reminder that angry crowds (whether in Italy or elsewhere) can do nasty things to the leaders who disappoint them.

L’IMMACOLATA The feast of the Immaculate Conception on 8 December is an important feast day for the Roman Catholic Church, as well as being a public holiday. It is also the start to the Christmas shopping season in Rome, and was once the day when all Italian women of a certain standing would put on their mink coats regardless of whether it was cold enough for their full-length furs. There are not many mink coats around these days but the holiday remains. And this year it falls on a Thursday, so inevitably it will be transformed into a long weekend – regardless of the recession, higher taxes, fewer jobs and general anxiety about the ups and downs of government bonds.

MUSEUMS AND GALLERIES After a six-year closure a part of Rome’s contemporary art collection is on view once more in its old space in Via Francesco Crispi 24. The city’s gallery, which is in the heart of the historic centre, has been eclipsed for several decades by its newer and more avant-garde siblings MACRO in Via Reggio Emilia and MACRO FUTURA in the ex-mattatoio, or slaughter yards in Testaccio. The exhibition called “Luoghi, figure, nature morte” displays paintings from the city collection by De Chirico, Mafai, Scipio, Severini, Morandi, Afro, Savinio, Carrà, Balla, Trombadori and Manzù. The Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna is also getting ready for a comeback (hopefully) at the end of December after a two-month closure to rearrange its collection. Like the Francesco Crispi space GNAM has been overshadowed by a newer and more glamourous arrival close by, the Museo Nazionale delle Arti del XXI Secolo (MAXXI for short). GNAM, with its national collection of 20th-century art, had its finest days in the 1950s and 1960s under its brilliant director Palma Bucarelli. After her departure in 1975 it seemed to lose its sense of purpose. Today most of the important exhibitions are held elsewhere (usually at Scuderie del Quirinale) and its collection has been neglected. Even its closure at the end of October went almost unnoticed but hopefully its re-opening will signal that it is back once again to play an important part in the city’s cultural life.

FIUMICINO AIRPORT According to a report in the daily newspaper Corriere della Sera there has been a greater increase in flight connections out of Leonardo da Vinci international airport this year than at any other European airport. And more are scheduled this month with Aer Lingus, China Eastern, Emirates, Gulf Airways, Qatar, Kenya Airways, all increasing connections. Aeroporti di Roma (AdR) is estimating that in the next eight years the number of passengers arriving at Fiumicino will go from the present 36 million to 50 million a year. If this is true then AdR, the operator of the site, better do some serious thinking about its numberone airport. At present Fiumicino has some of the worst services of any international airport in Europe, let alone other parts of the world. Departing international passengers crisscross each other looking for gates at five different terminals; international arrivals only has seven (perhaps eight?) immigration gates (of which only three are ever open). There is just one narrow exit out of the baggage reclaim areas for all international passengers, whether from the Schengen area or further afield. The shopping facilities are pathetic and the food is worse. Transport into the city – whether fast trains to Stazione Termini (which still stop at a platform half way out of the station), slow trains that don’t have enough carriages, buses (with only two stops) or taxis (more orderly than they once were but still difficult to negotiate for non-Italian speakers) – needs a complete re-think. Forget about adding new runways or terminals (construction on a new terminal between terminals 2 and 3 is now moving ahead fast after years on hold). It would be preferable if AdR could get the on-ground services right (the things that really matter to passengers) before adding more flights in and out of the airport. ROME’S VIKING VIRTUOSI Norway makes a discreet but significant cultural contribution to Rome espite having a population of less than five million, about 100 of which are resident in Rome, Norway has contributed actively to the cultural life of the Italian capital over the years. Considering that it has one of the lowest church attendance rates in the world, it is perhaps surprising to learn that Norway has its own Catholic chapel in the centre of Rome. The basilica of SS. Ambrogio e Carlo, situated about half-way along Via del Corso on the way to Piazza del Popolo, is home to an altar dedicated to St Olaf, the Eternal King of Norway. In the third side-chapel to the left of the nave is an imposing painting of the former Viking slaying a dragon, symbolising his victory over paganism. In 1023 King Olaf II Haraldsson introduced Christian-based laws and seven years later, after his death in the battle of Stiklestad, Norway became recognised as a Christian country. Donated to Norwegian Catholics by Pope Leo XIII, the chapel was inaugurated in 1893. Services in Norwegian take place here every Christmas and on Syttende Mai (the national holiday) on 17 May. The city’s best-known Norwegian is arguably the artist Hendrik Christian Andersen, who lived in Rome from 1896 until his death in 1940. In the 1920s he built Villa Helene, his neo-renaissance home on Via P. Stanislao Mancini near Piazzale Flaminio. He bequeathed the building to Italy in his will and it is now a part of a group of public museums affiliated with Italy’s Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna (GNAM) not far off in Viale delle Belle Arti. Behind its rose-pink façade are warehouse-like halls brimming with the artist’s over-sized plaster and bronze sculptures. Visitors walk under giant leaping stallions, muscular naked athletes and winged angels in a bizarre mix of classical and kitsch. In addition to the 200 sculptures, there is a significant collection of the artist’s paintings and graphic works, including his grandiose designs for the art-filled World City, a utopian world capital which he described as “a fountain of overflowing knowledge to be fed by the whole world of human endeavour in art, science, religion, commerce, industry and law”. Its concept was rejected as “preposterous” and “delirious” by Henry James, the American writer and close friend of the young Norwegian. Christian Andersen’s project was never realised but its plans remain, and his ornate marble tomb can be found in the city’s non-Catholic cemetery in the S. Paolo-Ostiense district. The Norwegian Institute in Rome is a centre for research and education in the archaeology, art and cultural heritage of the Mediterranean countries. From its base on Viale Trenta Aprile on the Janiculum hill, the institute hosts courses and conferences for Norwegian and international scholars, and organises archaeological excavations and field trips in the Mediterranean region. As part of the faculty of humanities at the University of Oslo it accepts Norwegian university students and high school teachers. The library, the institute’s main hub of activity, contains a substantial collection on Italian art history and classical archaeology, and is part of the Union of Roman Scientific Libraries (URBS), an online network of specialist international libraries in Rome. In 2009 the institute’s patron, Queen Sonja of Norway, came to Rome to attend celebrations in honour of its 50th anniversary.

Norway's Jenny Hval recently performed in Rome.

While Norwegian cultural greats such as Edvard Munch, Henrik Ibsen and Edvard Grieg are household names (and notwithstanding the likes of Josetein Gaarder, whose book Sophie’s World has sold over 30 million copies, or Åsne Seierstad who gained plaudits and controversy in equal measure for The Bookseller of Kabul), identifying some of its modern-day artists might be difficult for those of us living outside Norway. To counter this situation, NOW-Norwegian Way was established to promote contemporary Norwegian culture in Italy. Supported by Norway’s embassy, located on the Aventine hill, and multimedia company Snob Production, NOW has overseen a coordinated programme of Norwegian music, literature, art, cinema and architecture. These cultural happenings have been taking place across the country throughout 2011, many of them in Rome. During the summer, novelist Jo Nesbø participated in Rome’s International Literature Festival, and the Accademia Filarmonica held Norway Open Session with a concert dedicated to Grieg by renowned Norwegian-Italian operatic soprano Elizabeth Norberg-Schulz. She was accompanied by her student, mezzo-soprano Tone Kummervold, who spent six months training in Rome. Kummervold says that, being a typically-reserved Norwegian, mixing with the more communicative Italians helped her confidence. “I became more relaxed during my time in Rome, and it was easy to learn the language because Italian people are so receptive to foreigners.” In October, the Swedish Institute of Classical Studies in Villa Borghese hosted a collection of stone sculpture by seven Norwegian and Swedish sculptors entitled 7 Sculptors at Cava Cervaiole Monte Altissimo, previously exhibited in Carrara. Norway made international news when Swedish actress Noomi Rapace won best actress award for her role in Norwegian movie Babycall at the recent Rome International Film Festival. The Indian Highway exhibition at the MAXXI gallery, which runs until 29 January, was organised in collaboration with Oslo’s Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art, and singer-songwriter Jenny Hval played at Locanda Atlantide in Rome’s S. Lorenzo quarter. In addition to the NOW events, there has been a flurry of cultural activity from Norwegian artists exhibiting and performing around the capital this autumn. Heidi Dahlsveen regaled Rome audiences at the International Storytelling Festival and Paris-based artist Elisabet Norseng from Oslo staged Tocchi, an exhibition of abstract crayon designs on paper, her third solo show in Rome, at the Salon Privé Arti Visive in Trastevere. Residents of Rome intrigued by Norwegian art should check out the Scandinavian Club of Rome, based in the Casino di Vigna in Trastevere. This venerable association of Nordic artists dates back to 1860 and recently celebrated its 150th anniversary. Its current Norwegian resident, the young visual artist Øystein Wyller Odden, follows in the footsteps of former residents Grieg and Ibsen. Andy Devane Norwegian embassy, Via di S. 7 December 2011 Wanted in Rome

A NEW LOOK FOR THE BRITISH CONSULATE Her Majesty’s Consul, David Broomfield, explains some of the changes taking place at the consulate The British consulate has recently announced new opening hours. Could you explain the reason for this decision? We reviewed feedback from British citizens and as a consequence we’ve increased our opening hours for the public and introduced an appointment system two days a week for notarial and documentation services. On Wednesdays the section will be closed (except for real emergencies) to allow staff to do important outreach work with the local British resident communities and the Italian authorities. We’ll also use the time to carry out our crisis preparation work. We’re also planning to introduce a new telephone service to enable British nationals to speak direct to a consular enquiry point, rather than going through the main embassy switchboard. This number will be advertised on the ukinitaly website and in the media. By the end of the year the consulates in Venice and Florence will have closed. Could you explain why? Earlier this year consular services were reviewed across Italy, with the aim of improving our services. We decided to centralise northern services in Milan with an enlarged consular team. British nationals in Tuscany and Umbria will now have the choice of travelling to either Milan or Rome for full consular services including the issuing of emergency travel documents. The honorary consul will remain in Venice and a new honorary consul, Sara Milne, has been appointed in Florence. Are there differences between the British expats who live in these cities (Venice and Florence) and those who live in Milan, Rome and Naples, the consulates that remain open? I don’t think so. Obviously the British business community is much larger in Milan than elsewhere, with a commensurate number of families with children. In Florence the British business community is not large, but there are many resident Brits connected with academia and the arts. And there is a large British community of home-owners in Tuscany and Umbria. Rome and the Mezzogiorno have much more mixed communities of British nationals. Most Brits only come into contact with the consulate if they are in trouble or if they need legal documents. Do you think that the consulate has more than a bureaucratic or fire-fighting function? It certainly does. It is also our job to raise awareness of safe travelling for British nationals coming to Italy. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) works hard in this area and, in fact, the numbers of British nationals finding themselves in trouble overseas has dropped. One example of this in Italy is from Milan, where the consular team noticed an unfortunate increase in the number of serious skiing accidents or deaths – mainly alcohol-related. The team initiated a “Don’t drink and ski” campaign, with the aim of trying to prevent these. In the same vein, in Rome, we have begun to carefully monitor theft “hotspots”; we can do this when tourists produce police reports to support an emergency travel document application. If there is a particular area or a train where many thefts are occurring I raise this with the authorities, and work with them to alert Wanted in Rome 7 December 2011

Consul David Broomfield, second from right, with members of the consular team.

British tourists of the risk. We also include these problem areas on our website ukinitaly and in the FCO travel advice for tourists to Italy. There have been changes in recent years in the procedure for issuing British passports. How are these working and are there more changes ahead? I think it’s working well. Guidance on how to obtain a new passport is on our website. Passport applications are now processed in Paris, and printed in the UK. In the near future the entire processing of passports will be centralised in the UK. There were some initial teething problems when the process was transferred from Rome but these have now been addressed. What has been the most difficult case that you have had to manage during your various postings in Italy – Naples, Florence and now Rome – and why? For the past two years I’ve been working with the Kercher family. It is a truly tragic case. The family has acted throughout this ordeal with great dignity. It has been a real honour to be able to carry on the work of my predecessor in Florence and the Florence consular team in assisting the family in whatever way I can. What would be your most important piece of advice to a British subject coming to live in Italy? Do your research thoroughly beforehand. Check out the FCO website, particularly the “Travel & Living Abroad” pages (www.fco.gov.uk/travel). Go through the ukinitaly website and browse the internet more widely. Read Wanted in Rome... and learn Italian! Is more of your time taken with difficulties of those living in Italy or with tourists coming to visit for just a few days? Brits resident in Italy are, for the most part, very self-sufficient, and since passports are no longer issued at the embassy we don’t see or hear from large numbers of them. Most of our time is taken up with Brits visiting Italy who are hospitalised, have been robbed, imprisoned, or who have died. Which are your most valuable contacts in the Italian community? Are there new ones you would like to establish? Our most valuable Italian contacts are with the local and regional authorities, the police, civil protection agency and prison authorities. We continually try to build up this network. What is the event that the consulate dreads most? Obviously a large-scale natural disaster with many British citizens involved is not something we would relish – but we do run in-house crisis exercises, as I mentioned, so we’re prepared for these. The ash cloud crisis as well as the Libya evacuation proved that we’re able to cope when under pressure – but it was tough going! Mary Wilsey Consular Section’s new opening hours to the public: 09.00 – 14.00 Monday and Friday 09.00 – 15.30 Tuesday and Thursday Consular Section is closed on Wednesdays. Notarial appointments: 09.00-15.00 Tuesdays and Thursdays. “UK in Italy” website: http://ukinitaly.fco.gov.uk/en/

NEW IL VELLO D’ORO Antichi tesori della Georgia 17 Nov-5 Feb This travelling exhibition entitled “From the Land of the Golden Fleece: Tomb treasures from ancient Georgia” displays some 140 beautifully crafted jewels – many of them recent discoveries – excavated in the Republic of Georgia. These objects were fashioned between the fifth and first centuries BC when the region was known as Colchis. The Greeks referred to it as “polychrysos”, meaning “rich in gold”, and it lay on a trade route that stretched to India. It is believed to be the land to which Jason and the Argonauts set sail in pursuit of the magical Golden Fleece. Not only was gold mined there, it was found in rivers too, where the gold particles were collected using lanolinrich sheepskins. DANCE BOLOGNA

MILAN

MOSCOW BALLET LA CLASSIQUE 13-18 Dec In Swan Lake, choreography by Alexander Vorotnikov. This is quite a unique company as it only tours outside of Russia and its repertoire consists entirely in the recreation of the romantic classics. Comprising dancers who trained either in Russia or former Soviet countries, it relies on the audience’s nostalgia for old-fashioned ballet and the demand for Russian ballet tradition. Based on Lev Ivanov’s and Marius Petipa’s choreography, this Swan Lake is a museum piece. The dancers wear beautiful costumes, and perform the dances hallowed by time and reverence. The corps does not discover new depths, nor do the principals astound through exceptional virtuosity. The strength of La Classique is the straight-forward presentation, the lack of cleverness and the simple restaging of the romantic dance tradition. But it is hard to get away from the feeling that it is oldfashioned, it lacks characterisation, it does not have any real stars and does little to enhance the tragic force of the last two acts. Teatro Comunale, tel. 051529019, www.tcbo.it.

BALLET NUEVA CUBA 19, 23 Dec In Havana song & dance. A company of 12 dancers accompanied by the “Los Jovenes clasico del Son” Orchestra takes the audience on a chronological and historical journey of Cuban dance and music. From the tribal dances of African slaves to the music of the 1950s, from mambo to cha cha cha, salsa, timba and reggae ton. Teatro Smeraldo, tel. 0229006767, www.smeraldo.it. LE BALLETS TROCKADERO DE MONTECARLO 26-27 Dec In Swan Lake, Paquita, Patterns in space. The secret of this New York-based company of male dancers, who perform all the parts including the female roles (complete with tutus, leotards and dancing on point), is their respect and love of ballet. Their parodies of the classics have deep foundations and their dancing is excellent. Affectionately known as “the Trocks”, the company never desecrates ballet, just the

vanity of ballet dancers. Thus a prince exits head-first into the scenery while distracted by his own brilliance, and the jealousies of competing ballerinas are conveyed by narrowed eyes or an errant foot that smacks into a pouting mouth. But underneath all the jesting and the preening, there is some solid dancing. Some sequences – like a grand classique pas de deux – are delivered straight until the very last moment. It’s no surprise that Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo has been around for 37 years. Teatro Arcimboldi, tel. 02641142212, www.teatroarcimboldi.it.

ROME BALLETTO DEL TEATRO DELL’OPERA 20-30 Dec In The Nutcracker, choreography by Slawa Muchamedow from Petipa. This classic version of the Christmas favourite stars guest artists Anna Osadcenko, Bojana Nenodovic, Evan McKie, Anton Bogov and Alessandro Macario. Teatro dell’Opera, tel. 064817003, www.operaroma.it.

Behind their comedy routines the all-male Trocks perform some quality ballet.

FUORI STRADA 14-15 Dec The Fuori Strada project provides a launchpad for emerging companies and new choreographers. Six contemporary fringe Italian companies have been chosen to present short works on this prestigious stage over two evenings. Teatro Comunale, tel. 0532218311, www.teatrocomunaleferrara.it.

GENOA MOSCOW BALLET 3-29 Dec In The Nutcracker, choreography by Alexader Vorotnikov, music by Tchaikovsky. A fairytale ballet in two acts, the Nutcracker is a seasonal favourite. It is classical ballet at its most approachable. Based upon a story by Hoffman, it tells of one Christmas Eve, when the young Clara creeps downstairs for one of her presents, the toy Nutcracker, and finds herself at the start of a night of magical adventures as toy soldiers come to life to battle with the Mouse King, flowers dance and the Nutcracker transforms into a handsome prince who transports Clara to the Land of Sweets. SCIENCE BODY WORLDS 14 Sept-12 Feb How does your body work? The technique, called “plastination”, invented by the controversial German anatomist Gunther von Hagen, illustrates in graphic detail the most intricate parts of our bodies, muscles, nerves and skin as well as the major organs such as the heart and lungs. The von Hagen technique uses a mix of plastic resin and silicone to substitute the fluids and fat in real organs in order to preserve them. About 200 real parts on display here illustrate how the body works, what it looks like when it is healthy and what it looks like when it is diseased. Body Worlds has been on show in 60 different cities and has a system of registration for organ donation with the Institute of Plastination. The institute prepares bodies and their parts for the education of medical students, medical practitioners and the general public. OPERA NOTES The Turin opera season opens with Beethoven’s Fidelio, the opera which Beethoven admitted had caused him the most suffering. This production is the first directed by Mario Martone for the Turin stage. At Rome’s Auditorium Handel’s Messiah will mark the pre-Christmas season, performed by S. Cecilia orchestra and choir conducted by Fabio Biondi. It will be in the original version which was performed for the first time in Dublin at the Music Hall in Fishamble Street in 1742.

The set for Beethoven's Fidelio at Turin's Teatro Regio.
