A GENUINE ITALIAN CHRISTMAS The Neapolitan presepio with its elaborate scenography follows a time-honoured tradition Neapolitan crib-makers poke fun at celebrities with a selection of caricature figurines.
urrounded by a myriad of figurines representing the Pope, Obama, European leaders, TV personalities, film stars and football idols, stands a grinning doll-sized Berlusconi. He has ass’s ears like the puppet Pinocchio and he's bearing a placard that says: “Government falls. 50 per cent!” Every year, the master crib-makers of Naples take a sly poke at people in the news and this season Italy's much talked-of former prime minister makes an obvious target. These figurines, however, are simply gimmicks, calculated to draw the crowds and bring a smile. They will not be incorporated into any authentic Italian presepio, which is constructed according to a rigid and time-honoured tradition. It’s a bit of a crush at this time of year, but the festive atmosphere is irrestistible. If you want an authentic taste of a truly traditional Italian Christmas, head for the heart of Naples and Via S. Gregorio Armeno, street of the craftsmen who cater to the pious Italian custom of setting up an elaborate nativity scene in the home. But forget the cheap and crude little plastic figures you see in shops and on market stalls. Here are works of art, handcrafted exactly the same way as three centuries ago. The characters are made of traditional materials, such as terracotta and wax, moulded over a framework of wire and tow. Their faces are individually painted and they are clad in hand-sewn period costumes in natural fibres like velvet, corduroy, cotton and silk woven at the historic S. Leucio mill in Caserta, established by the Bourbon kings. The typical traditional Neapolitan presepio (known as the scoglio or “cliff”), is made of cork and shaped like a crag. It is decorated with moss, twigs and greenery and crowned with ancient classical temple ruins. It has different levels, linked by flights of winding steps. There's a stream with a bridge, a cascade and water-wheel, a forge, a bakery and a tavern, plus a host of traders and artisans carrying on their business without a glance at the main characters – the Holy Family group – which instead of holding centre stage is usually relegated to a little cave near the top. To the uninitiated, the Neapolitan crib seems a muddled mêleé with dozens of little figures and accessories that seem irrelevant to the biblical account of the birth of Christ. But this is not the case. Every single component of the presepio is imbued with hidden meaning, explains Marco Ferrigno, whose family has been creating these nativity scenes in Via Armeno since 1836. “If you look more carefully,” he says, “You will see there are two grottos – the higher one contains the manger and the lower one has the tavern. These two realities symbolise the struggle between good and evil. The tavern's a place of sin, with drunkards, pimps and pros-
S

titutes. There are demons lurking around, in contrast to the heavenly angels hovering over the sacred grotto.” The many personages are generically known as “shepherds” and each one is a set recognisable character, such as Benino, the Sleeping Shepherd, and the rollicking Cicci Bacco with his wine flask, who also represents the pagan god of wine. There's the Gypsy, a dark-complexioned woman with a baby in her arms. She is the counterfoil of the Virgin Mary but she also personifies the Sybil or soothsayer who prophesised the birth of Christ. The fisherman is the fisher of souls and the baker produces the bread of the Eucharist. The two compari (or “cronies”), Zi Vicienzo and Zi Pascale, impersonate Carnival and Death. The Three Kings approach the manger, mounted on a horse, a dromedary and an elephant, which stand, respectively, for the continents of Europe, Africa and Asia, while the ancient Greek and Roman ruins symbolise the triumph of Christianity over paganism. The bridge over the river allows the souls of the dead to communicate with the living. Even all the little fruits, vegetables and foodstuffs on the market stalls have a hidden meaning. They stand for the months of the year, with meat for January, eggs for April, cherries for May, water melons for August and so on. These additions were introduced in the baroque period by artist Michele Perrone who created typical street scenes, representing the profane world as opposed to the spiritual event of the Nativity. According to legend, St Francis of Assisi launched the presepio tradition when he set up a Holy Night tableau in the Umbrian village of Greccio for his peasant parishioners in 1223. True or not, the idea caught on quickly because the exquisite presepio in the Rome basilica of S. Maria Maggiore was carved by Arnolfo di Cambio only some 50 years later. By the 16th century, mangers were erected regularly in churches, while the nobles vied to have the best and biggest personal crèche. The Royal Palace of Caserta, just outside Naples, boasted a monumental crib with 1,200 figurines whose costumes were sewn by the princesses and ladies of the court. This crib has been carefully restored and is on display in the palace. In fact, the Bourbon monarchs Ferdinando IV and his son Francesco I were both keen collectors, with Ferdinando commissioning figurines from the leading sculptors of the day. If the jostling and jollity of Via Armeno becomes a bit much, you can admire the historic presepi collection at the Certosa of S. Martino in peace and quiet. There are some stunning pieces, but, of course, there won't be the same holiday spirit. Margaret Stenhouse 3

SAVING THE SCALA SANTA FRESCOS Vatican Museum art patrons are trying to raise €2 million to restore the frescos at Rome’s Scala Santa ou could easily walk through Piazza di Porta S. Giovanni and overlook an elegant, eggshell-pink and marble edifice in the shadow of the Lateran Palace. What looks like a modest church is in fact one of the most important religious sites in the world, visited by more than two million people a year. A third phase of restoration is now under way, which will bring its faded interiors and precious frescos back to their original luminous splendour. The sanctuary houses two important structures – one is the Scala Santa, a staircase that some believe was taken from the house of Pontius Pilate in Jerusalem and brought to Rome in 326 AD by Helena, mother of Rome's first Christian emperor, Constantine I. Jesus is said to have climbed the 28 steps before being condemned by Pilate. Today Christian pilgrims ascend the stairs on their knees, saying a prayer on each step. “This is what makes this monument totally unique: it is tangible, you can touch, feel, climb and experience it first-hand. At the same time, it brings you to put into practice an interior, spiritual conversion as you ascend towards the cross painted at the top of the stairs,” says Father Mark Haydu, international director at the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums. The sanctuary housing the Scala Santa was beautifully painted with 1,700 sqm of frescos depicting biblical scenes, saints and landscapes. Flemish artist Paul Bril completed the works in 1590 together with Cesare Nebbia and Giovanni Guerra, commissioned by Pope Sixtus V. Bril painted scenes from the Old and New Testaments including a dramatic seascape depicting the story of Jonah and the whale. At the sanctuary's entrance a series of frescos shows the Passion of Christ – with vivid scenes of Jesus's journey to the cross and crucifixion, while in the chapel of S. Lorenzo, Bril's signature pair of spectacles can be seen above the door of the Sancta Sanctorum. The Flemish master also painted landscapes at the behest of nature-loving Sixtus V. “It is extremely unusual to see landscape paintings in an ecclesiastical setting – they were considered an inferior art form and inappropriate liturgically … but Sixtus V specifically requested their inclusion,” says Nicola McCabe, a European Voluntary Service (EVS) volunteer working at the Sala 1 art gallery which is annexed to the sanctuary. A modern lighting system will also be installed to bring out the colours and details in the paintings, which are currently dimly-lit and obscured by years of candle smoke and city grime. Two previous restoration projects have already seen two of the site's chapels (S. Silvestro and the Sancta Sanctorum) brought back to their former glory. The restoration project is being coordinated by Mary Angela Schroth, curator of Sala 1 art gallery, together with the Passionist priests who are custodians of the sanctuary and the Patrons of the Arts in the Vatican Museums, a group of philanthropists. Haydu, as spokesperson for the patrons’ group, is also an advocate of the importance of art as a channel for emotions and spirituality.
Y

“What we normally see with restorations of this kind is that they naturally draw out the original beauty, colours and content that became invisible under layers of caked-on dirt and smoke residue from times when the world was candlelit. This allows for a new reading of works that shed light on and inspire faith through their messages,” says Haydu. The patrons’ group is working through a project called the Wishbook, which encourages philanthropists to participate in restoring specific works of art owned by the Vatican Museums. The sanctuary of the Scala Santa is on land owned by the Vatican, so this project qualifies for that. The Scala Santa at the top of the staircase is the sanctuary's second holy site, the Sancta Sanctorum. Built in 1270, it was used as an exclusive private chapel for the popes and its name translates as the “Holy of Holies”. The chapel is exquisitely decorated with 13th-century Byzantine mosaics. The ceiling is a fabulous example of Gothic architecture painted with gold stars on a blue background and featuring the four evangelists (three represented as animals). It also contains holy relics including a piece of wood said to be part of the Last Supper table and an icon, the Santissimi Salvatore Acheiropoieton, which legend says was not made by human hands. Pope Sixtus V built the sanctuary to unify the chapel and staircase in the late 16th century. Domenico Fontana was commissioned to design two chapels on either side of the Sancta Sanctorum, and four parallel staircases, two on either side of the Scala Santa. These additions provided a grander setting and better access. The Passionist priests, Sala 1 gallery and the Vatican Museums patrons group are aiming to raise €2 million not only with the Wishbook project but also through a donation box at the entrance to the sanctuary and through guided tours. Some of the tours (also in English, French, German and Russian) will include a visit to the art studio of Passionist priest Father Tito Amodei, now in his late 80s, who has worked in Rome since 1967 creating contemporary sculptures, often from wood. Schroth says: “Artistically, the frescos inside the sanctuary are incredibly important, while the Sancta Sanctorum is a gem of mediaeval architecture and artistry. A few months ago this seemed impossible, but now, thanks to Father Mark and the Patrons of the Vatican Museums, major contributions have been raised and we are definitely going ahead.” Bija Knowles For information tel. 067008691 or e-mail salauno@salauno.com; or for info: www.scalasanta.org. The guided tours: a simple tour of the Scala Santa with the two chapels that are normally closed to the public (€10); a longer tour which includes a visit to the gardens of the Passionist priests, Sala 1 art gallery and Father Tito's studio (€15).

MOVING CHRISTMAS Christmas for children in Rome used to mean Piazza Navona. That was when the square was packed to overflowing and when the smell of candy floss and roast chestnuts filled the air. Those were the days when the market stalls were stacked with terracotta crib figures instead of plastic imitations. Then, gradually, the Christmas market was transformed into a sanitised version of its old self and the magic, mystery and excitement drained away. Now the centre for Christmas has shifted from the historic centre to Auditorium Parco della Musica (or heaven forbid IKEA at the Porta Romana shopping mall). In the Flaminio part of town the Auditorium is more accessible, more spacious, more functional, although not quite the same. But look up at the night sky from the central open-air theatre and you’ll find that Renzo Piano’s modern architecture makes a magnificent contemporary setting for a child’s Christmas – perhaps not quite as special as a Borromini church or a Bernini fountain but special nonetheless.
CORRUPTION DOESN’T PAY Everyone knows that Italy is corrupt, just as everyone knows that Italians don’t pay taxes. So it is no surprise that this year’s Transparency International Corruption Perception Index (www.transparency.org) puts Italy 69th on its list of 183 countries. In 1995, a year after Silvio Berlusconi became prime minister for the first time, Italy was 33rd in the world’s corruption ratings. During his reign the slide has been relentless, but is it all his fault? One evening at a meal with a group of expats I decided to do my own research. “Have any of you ever paid a bribe?” I asked. There was a silence, then everyone around the table began to tell a tale of smaller or larger types of payments they had made to get some document or permit, nothing to which they were not entitled but which they were having difficulty getting without oiling the wheels. When in Rome one does as the Romans do? Perhaps I am ingenuous to be shocked but if nothing else figures prove that corruption simply doesn’t pay. In 2008 Italy’s national audit court, Corte dei Conti, estimated that corruption costs the country about €50-€60 billion a year. That’s double the €30 billion in the Salva Italia plan the government has just announced.
THE FOG OF POLLUTION Look at the language first – polveri sottili, EURO 1, 2 and 3, PM10, Fascia Verde. Then try to work out what this means. Do you really know the EURO category of your car, or are you just guessing, hoping that the vigili urbani won’t know either? Can you honestly say you know the boundaries of the Fascia Verde or are you guessing once again? And try defining polveri sottili (fine particles) with precision. If you look them up on Wikipedia you’ll soon wish you’d never started. Probably the vigili urbani can see a EURO 5 car (the cleanest of non-polluters) a kilometre away as there are thought to be only about 100,000 of them in circulation. The city’s streets should be far less-congested on Fascia Verde days but can you honestly say you have noticed the difference? Perhaps that is why the city decided to go back to the odd/even number days (you can circulate depending on whether the number plate of your car ends in an odd or even number) – a much less scientific but a much easier way of cutting those polveri sottili.
MONTI’S GOVERNMENT I suppose if it had been an ordinary government I wouldn’t have bothered to check the list of ministers; most of them would probably have been names I already knew. But a government without even one politician is intriguing and the term “team of technocrats” somewhat daunting, so it seemed a good idea to look them up. There are only 15 of them so it didn’t take long to run through the list. The first surprise was that so many of them were from practising Catholic backgrounds. The next was that all of them really were experts in their own fields, with several from the civil service. A third was that many of them had strong university and academic connections. But even more surprising was that there were only two figures from finance and business, not one unionist and nobody from the south. So the pessimists are right; growth and development really do take second place in the government’s plans.
RUBBISH IN THE STREETS Could Rome become another Naples with rubbish in the streets? The closure of the main landfill site, Malagrotta, has been imminent for almost as long as this magazine has been printing (since the mid-1980s). But could it be that this mega-site (supposedly the largest in Europe) will actually close before March according to the most recent plan? Several other sites around Rome are being readied to accept the city’s rubbish (west of Rome at Pizzo del Prete, in the north at Riano and in the south at Albano). All of them are protesting and some of them are coming to Rome with rubbish to make it clear that they will not accept the capital’s refuse on their home territory. It’s our guess that Malagrotta will miraculously find just a bit more space for just a bit longer, but one day we really could wake up to see uncollected rubbish sacks leaking out over the streets.

EXHIBITIONS THE PAINTED SONG Il Canto Dipinto. Edith Schloss and Alvin Curran. Curated by Maria Ida Gaeta. 21 Dec-31 Jan Paintings by Edith Schloss on musical scores by Alvin Curran. The exhibition is a unique combination of painting and music by two of Rome’s most innovative and active artists. Schloss and Curran have worked together many times since they first came to live in Rome and in The Painted Song they combine their great loves of painting, music and poetry. Here their art is so inextricably and intimately entwined that it creates a lyricism all its own. At the opening on 21 Dec there is a reading of Schloss’s poetry at 19.00 and a musical interlude, Riti Marittimi, by Curran at 19.30. See also cover of this edition of Wanted in Rome. TWO MAJOR GALLERIES REOPEN 21 Dec. The National Gallery of Modern Art (GNAM) reopens to the public after a short closure to allow for a reorganisation of its collections of 19th- and 20th century-art works. To celebrate, the gallery is showing three separate shows: one relating to the Arte Povera movement, one dedicated to Roman artist Gianfranco Baruchello, and an exhibition examining the relationship between art and photography. Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna, Via delle Belle Arti 131, tel. 06322981, www.gnam.beniculturali.it. The city’s gallery of modern art on Via Francesco Crispi also recently reopened for the first time since its closure for renovations in 2003. The gallery is staging a series of exhibitions drawn from its 3,000-piece collection, which stretches from the late 19th-century until world war two, the first of which is entitled Luoghi, figure, nature morte. The technique, called “plastination”, invented by the controversial German anatomist Gunther von Hagen, illustrates in graphic detail the most intricate parts of our bodies, muscles, nerves and skin as well as the major organs such as the heart and lungs. The von Hagen technique uses a mix of plastic resin and silicone to substitute the fluids and fat in real organs in order to preserve them. About 200 real parts illustrate how the body works, what it looks like when it is healthy and what it looks like when it is diseased. The exhibition is now open in the evenings from Fri-Sun. MILAN ARTEMISIA GENTILESCHI’S HISTORY OF A PASSION 22 Sept-29 Jan This major exhibition pays homage to the early Baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi (1593–1652). For the first time an exhibition displays Gentileschi’s entire production as well as published and unpublished documents. Gentileschi’s most famous paintings portray strong and suffering women from myth and the Bible as well as victims, suicides and warriors. This exhibition retraces four phases, which characterised Gentileschi’s life: her debut in Rome, where she was born and started her career deeply influenced by her father, the painter Orazio Gentileschi; her years in Florence; her return to Rome in the 1620s; her last 25 years in Naples. Gentileschi was the first woman to become a member of the Academy of Drawing Art of Florence. However she had to wait over three centuries to have her talent recognised. Until the end of world war two she was remembered mainly for her rape by her father’s colleague Agostino Tassi. This episode deeply marked Gentileschi’s life and career. DANCE BOLOGNA VANCOUVER CITY DANCE THEATRE 26 Jan In Dreams of Dalì, choreography by Roberta Baseggio. This is a multimedia dance work inspired by the work of artist Salvador Dalì. The Italian-born choreographer describes it as a combination of dance, theatre, and 3-D projection with original sets and costumes. She says she chose Dalì and his symbolic dream world as subject matter for this work because she believes that properly understood, the inner world of dreams can be used as a way of navigating through the waking world and understanding that which can’t be experienced through the senses. 3-D technology is used in several ways to connect the audience with the performance. Dalì’s famous melting clocks from the painting “The Persistence of Memory”, for example, are designed to move from the back of the stage along the floor and out into the audience. Another one of Dalì’s famous images is “The Anthropomorphic Cabinet” which shows a woman’s body whose torso is transformed into open drawers. Using special effects technology, the drawers of the image open and close during the performance. Arena del Sole, tel. 0512910915, www.arenadelsole.it.
MILAN LE BALLETS TROCKADERO DE MONTECARLO 26-27 Dec In Swan Lake, Paquita, Patterns in space. The secret of this New York-based company of male dancers who perform all the parts including the female roles (complete with tutus, leotards and dancing on point) is their respect and love of ballet. Their parodies of the classics have deep foundations and their dancing is excellent. Affectionately knows as “the Trocks”, the company never desecrates ballet,

just the vanity of ballet dancers. Thus a prince exits head-first into the scenery while distracted by his own brilliance, and the jealousies of competing ballerinas are conveyed by narrowed eyes or an errant foot that smacks into a pouting mouth. But underneath all the jesting and the preening, there is some solid dancing. Some sequences – like a grand classique pas de deux – are delivered straight until the very last moment. It’s no surprise that Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo has been around for 37 years. Teatro Arcimboldi, tel. 02641142212, www.teatroarcimboldi.it.

BALLETTO DEL TEATRO ALLA SCALA 20-25 Jan In Excelsior, choreography by Ugo Dell’Ara. This ballet, created in 1881 cannot be compared with the great classics of the same period like Bayadère or Sleeping Beauty. There is no romantic story-line or tragic heroine: It tells of the glory of the great scientific discoveries like the steamengine, the telegraph, the Suez Canal, the Cenisio tunnel. Excelsior was one of the greatest triumphs of the Italian ballet, rich in pomp, colours and dances. With world war one it disappeared from the scenes and until 1967 only the version for puppets remained alive. Luckily in June of that year a revisited Excelsior was presented in Florence, with choreography by Dell'Ara and it has become part of La Scala’s repertoire. The protagonists are “Civilization”, “Light”, “Obscurantism” and other such ideal concepts and ideas. Teatro alla Scala, tel. 027203744, www.teatroallascala.it.
COMPAGNIA DERNIER MINUTE/ PIERRE RIGAL 17-19 Jan In Press, choreography by Pierre Rigal, a French dancer and former athlete whose work focuses on the absurdity and pathos of the human condition. In Press he explores how our personal space is confined by the pressures of modern life, performing in a specially-constructed boxed stage less than three and a half metres wide. He sets himself a Houdini-esque choreographic challenge, which evolves into an extraordinary feat of physical prowess and daring. Rigal works in collaboration with lighting designer Frédéric Stoll and sound designer Nihil Bordures who perform live and in response to him each evening. OPERA OPERA NOTES Two modern operas open the year in Italy, Candide by Leonard Bernstein in Rome and Lou Salomè by Giuseppe Sinopoli in Venice. The production of Candide is the same as the one staged in Naples in 2007, conducted here by Wayne Marshall with Jessica Pratt (profiled in the 9 Nov edition of Wanted in Rome) in the lead role. The production of Lou Salomè, a dense and disturbing opera, marks the 10th anniversary of the death of Sinopoli and the 30th anniversary of the opera’s debut in Munich. Paolo Di Nicola
