PIAZZA S. SILVESTRO GETS A NEW LOOK Reconstruction in Piazza S. Silvestro (Chiesa S. Claudio centre left, Acqua Marcia building left). Photo by Fr John Fitzpatrick taken from the terrace of S. Silvestro in Capite.

P

iazza S. Silvestro has never been a place to linger long, perhaps just long enough to jump on a bus or post a letter. It is difficult to think of any other square in the historic centre with so few attractions. Most guidebooks give it only a few lines and then only to mention the 8th-century church of S. Silvestro in Capite and the general post office. There is one bar; there are no restaurants and only a few shops. It is a place everyone knows, everyone uses and no one notices – a space to pass through to get somewhere else. Now this ugly duckling is about to exchange its nondescript grey feathers for elegant white plumage. At the end of July the numerous bus stands in the square were swept away, the barriers went up, bulldozers started digging and shifts of workers – labouring far into the night – began the work of transformation. But transformation into what? The first designs showed a large open space with stone benches, a contemporary sculpture, a few potted olives and the old rectangular newsstand replaced by a gazebo-like structure immediately opposite the post office. Then the protests started. The main objection was that the solid stone benches looked like “coffins for the homeless”, according to one observer. There was discussion about the potted trees, lamentations that the new “furnishings” were in regimented rows and perplexity about the contemporary sculpture. Who should commission it, who should choose it? At the end of August – after works had started – one of Italy’s top architects, Paolo Portoghesi, designer of the mosque in Parioli and expert on Borromini and the Baroque, was called in to give his opinion. All sorts of ideas are now being put forward, such as a fountain in the middle of the square or a small sunken stage for music and happenings. The only meeting point seems to be the general agreement that what is needed is “a dignified entrance to the Tridente”, the maze of little streets in the shape of a trident between Piazza del Popolo, Piazza di Spagna and the river, with Via del Corso running down the middle. The real problem with the square is that it is a Mussolini leftover, part of his grand plans for the centre of the city but one that was left half-finished. Until his architects and planners got going, Piazza S. Silvestro was a fraction of its present size, a small rectangular space in front of the church of S. Silvestro in Capite and its adjoining convent. This combination of church and convent was the focal point of the small square and remained so until Rome was declared the capital of the new united Italy in 1870. Then the makers of the new nation outlawed holy orders, turned the sisters out of their convent next to the church and moved the ministry of public works and later the general post office into the buildings left vacant. The façade of the old convent was widened, heightened and embellished to transform it into a suitably grandiose building, but one that dwarfed the small square. The church survived unchanged and by the 1880s it had become a focal point of worship for English-speaking Catholics and in 1909 its new role was officially entrusted to the Irish province of the Pallottine Fathers. Wanted in Rome 28 September 2011

At about the same time an Anglican church – the third to be built in Rome in this period after St Paul’s Within-the-Walls on Via Nazionale and All Saints’ on Via del Babuino – was going up just opposite the post office. But the project was short-lived: only about 50 years after its consecration in 1883, Mussolini’s city planners published their schemes for the centre of Rome. Among their less dramatic plans (the most revolutionary were the construction of Via dei Fori Imperiali, Via della Conciliazione and Piazza Augusto Imperatore) was a project to knock down almost all the buildings between the post office and Via del Tritone. This included Holy Trinity which had by then already relocated close to Via Veneto. The buildings came down (they were in almost the exact space now under reconstruction in the photo above) and the square was enlarged to its present size in 1940, possibly just before Italy declared war in June but here public records are rather vague and eye-witnesses are dying out. The next firm clue is 1956, the date carved in Roman numerals in the middle of the long Mussolini-esque building that runs the length of the square from Via della Mercede to Via del Pozzetto. Known as the Acqua Pia Antica Marcia building – after the aqueduct that supplies much of this part of the city – one can only assume that 1956 is the year of its completion. Certainly this building was not on the 1932 city plans. Documents do not even agree who designed the building, although it was certainly one of the Busiri Vici dynasty of Rome architects. From the 1950s onwards the now out-of-proportion and forlorn-looking square became the terminus for bus services into the historic centre from the north and east of the city. The sheer convenience of this large open parking lot so close to the main shopping areas was probably the main reason – as well as lack of a suitable alternative – why it took another 60 years to dislodge public transport from the square. The buses have now gone for good but the problem of where to park them remains. At the moment they lurk in nearby Via S. Claudio and Largo Chigi, grid-locking access to Italy’s parliament and cabinet offices, not to mention the Tridente shopping area. But luckily for the square itself there is now no going back. By the end of this year work should be finished. What will fill the large space – statues, trees, works of art, a place for concerts and plays – is anybody’s guess right now. The city designers and architects have not consulted those closest to the action – the Pallottine Fathers at S. Silvestro church, the only real residents of the square. But the rector, Fr John Fitzpatrick, says that without the buses the area will be quieter and more beautiful. He also hopes that people will now want to linger in the square and to drop into the church for a welcome from the Irish priests who have been the guardians of the church and its surrounding community for over 100 years. A TOTALLY GREEN WINE Castel Monte Vibiano's Green Revolution shows that eco-friendly wine and olive oil production is not only possible and desirable, it's also fun

A ride in electrically powered jeeps up the bumpy track to the Vigna Lorenzo is an integral part of the Castel Monte Vibiano visitor experience.

ouncing over the bumps and dips between the narrow rows of vines in a 2,000 year-old vineyard, perched on a futuristic ecologically-powered vehicle, is a thrilling and unique experience to be had only at the Monte Vibiano estate in the heart of Umbria. The Eco Tour, launched in June 2010, is the latest addition to the innovations introduced by the Fasola Bologna family on their totally organicallyrun farm some 20 km south of Perugia. Visitors to the winery are allotted a little electric jeep so that they can drive up to the ancient vineyard under the family castle, a 16th-century mansion built on second century BC foundations overlooking the Mercatello valley, on the ancient way that connected the Tiber valley to Rome. The route climbs up a country track through centuries-old olive groves to the Vigna Lorenzo, named after Count Lorenzo Fasola Bologna, the 39-year-old head of the Castel Monte Vibiano company. According to documentation, a vineyard already existed on this spot at the time of the Roman republic. You can still see, in fact, the remains of a surrounding wall that dates back to the second century BC. The peaceful view from the vineyard, sloping down over typical Umbrian rolling countryside, fields and stretches of woodland, is worth the trip alone. Returning to the winery, the tour includes a visit to the state-of-the-art cellar with its 36 gleaming stainless steel tanks (with computerised temperature control). The roof of the building is coated with a special energy seal that deflects the sun’s rays and keeps the interior cool, according to the bianco albedo principle, researched by Franco Cotana, director of the CRB Institute (Centre of Biomass Research) of Perugia University and the Monte Vibiano consultant. Monte Vibiano launched its green revolution in 2008 with the aim of achieving zero greenhouse gas emissions by the end of 2009. Over 10,000 trees were planted on the estate to absorb the carbon dioxide in the air. Solar panels were installed, biodiesel-fuelled tractors introduced and an ecological energy charging station set up, fuelled by multi-directional solar panels that turn their faces towards the sun like sunflowers. Naturally, only organic fertilisers are used, along with age-old tricks of the past, such as planting strips of grass between the rows of vines to keep in the moisture. All the estate dependents travel on bicycles. The result was a prestigious recognition: Monte Vibiano is the first Italian company, and one of the first in the world, to be awarded official certification (ISO 14064) for zero greenhouse gas emissions. The operation involved a hefty financial investment, but Lorenzo Fasola Bologna is convinced that it has been well worthwhile: “Monte Vibiano is an

B

oasis in one of the most beautiful areas of Italy,” he tells us. “I feel privileged to have been born in this very special place. I felt is was my duty to protect this environment and save it uncontaminated for future generations. It’s also been a practical choice, because we’re recovering our investment through energy saving. And it’s been good for marketing. Our initiatives have attracted a lot of interest.” Free wine tastings are offered to visitors in the Green Bar, a spacious veranda designed by Lorenzo’s wife Maryam Shams, using recycled materials. The bar counter, for instance, is a beam from an abandoned church, old barrels make the tables and the walls are decorated with mosaics set with rounds of recycled wood. Bruschetta bread seasoned with the farm’s olive oil is served with the wine. Olive oil is an important part of the estate’s production. Monte Vibiano has 12,000 olive trees in the hills surrounding the family castle. The farm produces exclusively top quality cold-pressed extra virgin olive oil and specialises in miniature single-dose bottles which have proved very popular with airlines such as Delta, British Midland, Korean Airways and Emirates for their first and business class. It has also found favour with celebrated Michelin-star chef Michel Roux. Half a century ago, the farm was producing other crops like sunflower seeds, beans and lentils, but in the 1960s Lorenzo’s father Andrea undertook a major modernisation and restructuring project that included an extensive tree replanting operation. Later, Lorenzo began to revive the old family wine-making tradition. Years of patient work and experimentation have produced a distinguished range of three reds and one white, including the boutique DOC red Colli Perugini L’Andrea, created with the help of Umbria oenologist Attilio Pagli, which Fasola Bologna believes has all the cards in order to rank alongside the prized “Super Tuscan” wines. L’Andrea made a dazzling debut at the 2010 Pratham Charity Gala, held in the Old Billingsgate Market in London to raise money for educational projects for underprivileged children in India. Encased in a collector’s bottle specially designed by world-famous Murano glass master Pino Signoretto, the magnum bottle was auctioned for the astounding sum of €70,000 – an absolute record for an auctioned Italian wine. Margaret Stenhouse Castello Monte Vibiano Vecchio, Mercatello di Marsciano, 20 km south of Perugia. THE PONTIFICAL IRISH COLLEGE Fr Ciarán O’Carroll has been appointed rector of Rome's Pontifical Irish College. A priest of the Dublin archdiocese, O’Carroll holds a doctorate in ecclesiastical history and is a graduate of University College Dublin (UCD) and the Gregorian University in Rome. He leaves behind his post of administrator of the Catholic University Church on St Stephen’s Green in Dublin's city centre. O’Carroll succeeds Msgr Liam Bergin, whose ten-year tenure coincided with a complete refurbishment of the college building and a radical re-ordering of its chapel by the celebrated mosaic artist Marko Rupnik SJ. Appointed rector in 2001, Bergin is credited with raising the Irish College's religious, diplomatic and cultural profile, both in Rome and in Ireland. He was also influential in the improvement of Anglo-Irish relations, hosting a number of high-profile visitors from Britain including then prime minister Tony Blair and former Archbishop of Canterbury George Carey. Bergin has recently taken an academic post at Boston College in the US. Meanwhile the seat of the Irish ambassador to the Holy See remains vacant since the departure of Ambassador Noel Fahey in early June. When appointed, the new incumbent is likely to face an uphill task in repairing diplomatic relations between the Vatican and Ireland, after the Irish prime minister's recent unprecedented attack on the Vatican over its mishandling and alleged cover-up of child sexual abuse in Ireland.

KEATS-SHELLEY MUSEUM

BRITAIN

The Keats-Shelley Memorial House is in the process of selecting a new curator to replace Catherine Payling, who left Rome at the end of July on her marriage in June to Duncan Wu, one of the foremost scholars of the Romantic period and professor of English literature at Georgetown University, Washington DC. In her 14 years as curator Payling managed to transform the museum at the foot of the Spanish Steps from an interesting collection of memorabilia, documents and books about the Romantic poets into a top-class museum in line with the highest modern standards. She modernised the building, which was in serious need of repair, increased the number of visitors each year, instigated new outreach programmes to Rome’s English-speaking and Italian schools and universities, added to the collection of rare books, organised exhibitions, talks and new publications about the Romantic poets Keats, Shelley and Byron and just before her departure opened a museum shop on the first floor of the premises. In addition she also managed to place the museum on a sound financial footing for the first time in its 100-year history. During her time in Rome Payling was also instrumental in saving the Non-Catholic Cemetery (the last resting place for Keats and Shelley) from near financial disaster. Lack of sound management and direction was eating into the cemetery’s capital funding until she applied the same techniques she used at the Keats-Shelley House – sound spending, good structural maintenance, community-based fund raising, outreach to the user community and the skilled involvement of researchers and volunteers. The choice of the new curator is expected to be announced in October or November.

ROMANIAN AVANT-GARDE ART An exhibition of 74 paintings by the masters of Romanian avant-garde is on display at Rome’s Vittoriano museum until 15 October. The exhibition offers an overview of the effects of history on the visual arts in Romania, charting the transition from Impressionism, Symbolism, Expressionism and Post-Impressionism towards Abstractionism and Surrealism. It is divided into four themes: social issues, identity, urban anxieties and dreams, and a journey’s end. Curated by Erwin Kessler, the show has been organised by the Romanian Cultural Institute of Bucharest and the country’s ministry of culture and national heritage, and is promoted by the Romanian embassy in Italy and the Romanian Academy of Rome in Valle Giulia. In 2007 the exhibition began touring five important museums in Romania before travelling to the National Museum of Contemporary Art in Lisbon and the National Gallery in Prague in 2009. Among the most important artists in the exhibition are Victor Brauner, Hans Mattis-Teutsch, Theodor Pallady, Camil Ressu, Francisc Șirato, Nicolae Tonitza and Ion Țuculescu. FESTIVALS ROME ROMAEUROPA FESTIVAL 7 Oct-30 Nov The title and theme for this annual arts bonanza is always catchy and full of promise. With the theme Try the impossible this year’s edition highlights the festival’s experimental and cutting edge nature. The 39 events that make up the programme range from dance, to theatre, to (mostly digital) music and visual arts and impressive is the line-up of artists scheduled to take to the stage for what has become Rome’s most prestigious and fashionable cultural event. The programme has been divided into five different sections: Scene dedicated to dance and theatre; DNA that stands for Danza Nazionale Autoriale and is a launchpad for young Italian choreographers with a “different” take; Corpi Resistenti dedicated to the dance scene in the Middle East and in northern Africa and with a focus on the Arab Spring; Suoni in which contemporary music merges with experimental rock, classical music and hybrids of music and poetry; and Digitalife totally projected towards technology of the future. The calendar is studded with big international names like Saburo Teshigawara, Peter Brook, Trisha Brown, Lloyd Newson and his DV8 Physical Theatre, Hofesh Shecter, Jan Fabre and Marina Abramovich. Events take place in different venues including some recently-renovated former industrial spaces like the Carrozzeria Maercar, the Opificio and even a city swimming pool. If you intend buying tickets for a number of events, Romaeuropa offers a series of fidelity discounts. For further information and booking, www.romaeuropa.net. FESTIVAL INTERNAZIONALE DI FOTOGRAFIA 23 Sept–23 Oct Motherland is the theme of the tenth edition of FotoGrafia – Rome’s International Festival of Photography. It explores the relationship between photography and the land of belonging. Organisers say the choice of the theme is the result of an increasingly pressing need in a globalised society to seek one’s “motherland”. The photographers respond in their own, personal way, exploring the concept of “land of belonging”, whether the land is old or new, real or virtual. The festival’s international jury has selected 15 projects including five finalists and the winner of the 2011 edition. The works of the 15 selected photographers will be screened in the MACRO Testaccio Museum, Piazza O. Giustiniani 4. For information www.fotografiafestival.it. FLAMENCO FESTIVAL 5-16 Oct Organised by the Musica di Roma Foundation this festival is entirely dedicated to the art and culture of flamenco. Some of Spain’s most famous flamenco dancers and musicians show off their talent within three basic categories: “el cante” (singing), “el toque” (instrumental music accompanied by clapping and stamping of the feet), and “el baile” (dancing). A recital by the virtuoso flamenco guitarist and composer Paco De Lucia is billed as a pre-inauguration event (28 Sept). Auditorium Parco della Musica, Viale P. de Coubertin. Booking tel. 892982. ROME FILM FESTIVAL 27 Oct-4 Nov The focus of this year’s festival is dedicated to the United Kingdom and its vibrant contribution to the world of cinema. Opening the event is French director Luc Besson’s film The Lady, about Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese pro-democracy leader and human rights activist. Presented out of competition, the film tells the tale of Suu Kyi's political and personal struggles, and recounts her long separation from her late British husband Michael Aris, after she was placed under house arrest in Burma in 1989. It stars Malaysian actress Michelle Yeoh, who was blacklisted for her role by Myanmar authorities who deported her while she visited the country in June. The sixth edition of the International Rome Film Festival will be held at Rome’s Auditorium Parco della Musica. Five theatres – S. Cecilia, Sinopoli, Petrassi, Teatro Studio, and Studio 3 –

TURIN TORINODANZA 5 Sept-4 Dec The organisers of this successful dance festival have embarked on a search for what they call an ethical and aesthetic centre of gravity for the festival against a socially and politically worrying global backdrop. This year’s festival gives space to the contemporary circus seen as a workshop for visionary expression and ends with Karine Saporta’s La Princesse de Milan, based on Shakespeare’s The Tempest, and with Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s prototype of pure dance. Special emphasis is given to the section comprising the Italian Dance Platform (13-16 Oct), which is an opportunity to see contemporary Italian choreography, and is also a joint venture with other dance associations and companies of the Piedmont region. DANCE PARMA

NAPLES

FESTIVAL VERDI 1-28 Oct Internationally renowned opera festival celebrating the composer in his native Parma to coincide with the month of his birth. This year is special because Italy is celebrating the 150th anniversary of its unification, and perhaps more than the music of any other composer, Verdi’s music has the force and the emotion of a patriotic sentiment that is emblematic of a nation proud to celebrate its history and its roots. This year’s operas are Un ballo in maschera and Falstaff, as well as the muchloved Requiem Mass. The programme includes conferences, readings from the masterpieces of literature which inspired the opera libretti, and exhibitions. The festival is set in theatres, opera houses and other locations in Parma and in Verdi territory. For booking and information tel. 0521039393, www.teatroregioparma.org.

KOREA NATIONAL BALLET 12, 13 Oct In Prince Hodong. South Korea appears to be riding the wave of an unprecedented ballet boom and has just hosted the first government-led ballet festival. The ballet scene in the nation has blossomed recently with many Korean-born ballet dancers starring in overseas competitions and a sell-out February staging of Giselle by the Korea National Ballet. The ballet Prince Hodong, sponsored by the ministry of culture, sports, and tourism as part of the “Nation Branding” project, is an original work based on a traditional tale, The Princess Nakrang and The Prince Hodong. Although there have been many dances based on Korean literature over the last 50 years, this work is considered particularly significant because the plot touches on the themes of nation, war, love, betrayal, and death, and it is a good example of the way in which Korea is combining western artistic style with the country’s traditions. Teatro di S. Carlo, Teatrino di Corte a Palazzo Reale. For information tel. 0817972331, www.teatrosancarlo.it.

JIRI AND OTTO BUBENICEK 11 Oct In Le Souffle de l´Esprit, Toccata and The picture of Dorian Gray. The Czech choreographer and dancer Jiri Bubenicek has created a number of ballets since his first in 1999, but he isn’t especially well-known as a choreographer outside his native Prague. He has, however, achieved a reputation as a superb classical dancer, first with the Hamburg Ballet, and then at the Dresden SemperOper, where he is currently a principal. That reputation has been magnified by the fact that he has an identical twin: Otto, an equallyadmired principal with the Hamburg Ballet, who frequently composes music for his brother’s pieces. This Rome performance offers the audience the chance to watch the celebrated twins, perfect in their sameness and splendid masculinity, in a gala evening during which they present their own creations as well as introducing nine other dancers from leading Hamburg, Zurich, Dresden

The Sevillian choreographer and bailaor presents his new work born from his collaboration with the Théâtre de la Ville of Paris, where he recently became an associate artist. He is on stage with cantaora Inés Bacán and with the Swiss composer and pianist Sylvie Courvoisier. Galván defines La Curva as “a visit to my natural artistic space, that space there is between the deepest flamenco, represented by Inés Bacán, and the contemporary territory offered by Sylvie Courvoisier and which, after all, is the creative space where I move around when I conceive my work.” He goes on to explain that the work is born from his familiarity with silence, from his need to

SABURO TESHIGAWARA/KARAS 7-8 Oct In Obsession, choreography by Saburo Teshigawara. OPERA NOTES Paolo Di Nicola focuses on the two Verdi operas at the Verdi festival in Parma, as well as a recital by baritone Leo Nucci, a top Verdi singer. A Parma apre il Festival Verdi 2011 (1-28 ottobre). L’opera inaugurale sarà Un ballo in maschera (123 ottobre). The English Theatre of Rome invites spectators to “look back, high five and laugh with that lost generation who pioneered the sexual revolution, and moved upwards in its aftermath”. with monologues that combine wit, historical commentary and genuine despair over a range of social injustices. Here he dips into the writings of a prison inmate who is preparing a speech. It’s an important speech that attempts to piece together fragments of his own history as well as reconstruct the steps of his political formation that was born from the reading of the only three books the prison has allowed him to consult. So he turns for help to Mazzini…. It’s Celestini’s bitter personal tribute to the 150th anniversary of Italian unity. As always he melds the boundaries between the written word and classic visual storytelling. His narration doesn’t guide or illuminate events, it tells a story, flows along streams of consciousness and repeatedly tries to make sense of the senseless. Dear Editor, Your decision to charge for "Lessons' advertisements" is very unpleasant for the advertisers and for all the people interested in lessons. I suppose that your choice is an unsuccessful try to earn more money. I shall explain why: most of the lessons' advertisers are qualified teachers working one or maximum two days per week in schools (rare substitutions), without a stable contract (for a long time, the Italian government has been dismissing teachers and it has been discouraging the employment's opportunities in the private schools through a strong tax regime). Otherwise, teachers with unlimited time contract don't need and don't have time to offer private lessons and so they don't use your web site for advertising. Therefore, for a lot of teachers and tutors like me, the main source of wealth is the "private lesson". People offering that service don't earn enough to afford advertisements on payment. If you don't believe, give a look to your section "Lessons" and estimate how many advertisers published on payment from the 1st of September until the 5th: only one advertiser. All the other advertisers are looking for another web site where to publish for free their advertisements. tresponde@ymail.com Dear Tresponde,

Wanted in Rome 28 September 2011

Thank you for bringing this problem to the attention of our readers. We are very aware of the difficulties facing teachers, which is why we have offered you and others like you free classified advertisement for the last ten years. We realised when we took the decision to ask a fee for lessons placed on our website (which are then also published in the magazine, space permitting) that it might discourage some of you from placing your advertisements with us. However we hope that in time you will return to our website, and that it will provide you with a source of language students once again. Editor Wanted in Rome welcomes letters to the editor. Please send emails to editorial@wantedinrome.com.
