HELPING IMMIGRANTS INTEGRATE Behind the alarmist headlines there are numerous organisations working to help immigrants integrate into Italian society fter three decades of net immigration into Italy, the foreign presence is finally becoming an issue and with positive undertones. Here in Rome there are initiatives aimed at encouraging integration and developing immigrant communities, while nationally there is some hope that the 2002 Bossi-Fini law regulating citizenship will be reformed. In the past, the only time that immigration was an issue was when strident politicians and press screamed about the “invasion” or “emergency” with pictures of overcrowded and dangerous boats in the seas between Lampedusa and North Africa full of mostly black Africans. In 2009 irregular immigration was made into a crime. Actually most immigrants arrive legally and by land or air and not as irregulars by sea. There are about 4.6 million foreigners resident in Italy or 7.5 per cent of the population. Almost 600,000 of these were born in Italy but because of the Bossi-Fini law they can only apply for citizenship when they are 18. More than half of the total (53.4 per cent) are Europeans (2.4m), and more than half (1.3m) are EU citizens, the majority Romanian. Here in Rome, there are almost 300,000 resident foreigners or 10.7 per cent of the total population, with a tenth of them born here. After the Romanians, the biggest national groups are Albanians (482,000), Moroccans (452,000), Chinese (209,000), Ukranians (200,000), Filipinos (134,000) and Moldovans (130,000). They mostly work in agriculture, in the building industry and as domestic helpers, either as cleaners or carers. The domestic workers reflect a big gender difference: unlike most previous migratory movements where it was the men who left, today in some sectors women are in the majority. The eastern Europeans are predominantly women while the Africans, both north and sub-Saharan, are mostly men. Not only do immigrants make up for the lack of public welfare services for children, the old and the sick, and do many of the menial task Italians are unwilling to do, they also make a substantial contribution to the country’s taxes. According to the 2011 International Organization for Migration (IOM) report on the immigrant economy in Italy, they make up 7.9 per cent of the total number of taxpayers (in Lazio it is 9.4 per cent). Because they earn less than Italians, their taxes make up 5.1 per cent of the total (Lazio 5.3 per cent). The number of middle-income immigrants is growing, as is that of immigrants who have started businesses. They are an increasing social, cultural and economic presence in Italy. For the first couple of decades of immigration, which started slowly in the 1970s, there was very little xenophobia or violent racism, but over the last ten years Italy has discovered a darker side. The Lega Nord has become explicitly anti-immigrant, riding a populist and only thinly-veiled racist tiger. The more mainstream right Popolo della Libertà (PdL) is only slightly more restrained. Apart from his much-publicised remark about a “suntanned” Obama, Silvio Berlusconi has on various occasions lamented the fact that Milan looks like an African city. Even the centre and the left, nominally antiracist and in favour of integration, are dragged into talking about the “invasion” of immigrants, referring to irregulars as clandestini or illegal. Not surprisingly, talk has led to action. Last month a Tuscan neo-fascist killed two Senegalese and wounded three others in Florence. A few days before, a group of vigilantes in Turin went into a Roma camp and set it ablaze, thankfully without casualties. The extreme, neo-fascist right plays on the most deadly fuse to racist violence: fear. There is bound to be more racism and racist violence but it can be kept under control.

Already for years now, there have been schemes organised by the ministry of education teaching Italian to immigrant children and their parents. The ministry of labour and social policy has a department that provides information on labour, welfare and pension laws and regulations for immigrants. There is a myriad of civil society organisations created by immigrants themselves or by Italians working in the voluntary sector in order to bring immigrants into mainstream Italian life. Foreign embassies too play a role sharing the experiences of countries that have had much longer history of immigration. Italian journalists have been taken to Sweden to see how multiculturalism is reported. The British embassy organises seminars sharing best practices with Italian public authorities; the US has brought in American civil society organisations to talk to their Italian counterparts. Rome has four adjunct councillors on the city government with a voice but no vote; they represent immigrants from four areas – Africa, the Americas, Asia and non-EU Europe (residents with EU citizenship may vote directly for city councillors). My own university, the American University of Rome, recently worked with the four councillors organising seminars for future leaders of the immigrant communities, and will be holding further courses this spring on development and immigration issues (see box). But the most important issue is the campaign to change the present citizenship law so that children born and brought up in Italy have a right to citizenship. At the moment, they may apply for it when they are 18, while in all western European nations children born in the country with resident parents have the right of citizenship (ius soli). It is easier for an Australian, American or Argentinean with an Italian grandparent to become Italian than for someone born here. Last November, President Napolitano called this situation a “folly… absurd”. The speaker of the chamber of deputies, Gianfranco Fini, whose name is on the present law, is now one of the most vehement supporters of change. Given the present “technical” government, which is nominally neutral on the issue, there is a fair chance that the reform bills will get a hearing in parliament and, once there, might be passed. And when immigrants become Italian citizens, the biggest single obstacle to integration is removed. James Walston

In October, the American University of Rome organised two full-day workshops for future leaders of immigrant communities as part of Roma Capitale’s “I mondi a Roma” initiative. The annual event (this was the fourth) has the double aim of presenting immigrant cultures to Italian Romans and preparing immigrants to work in the city. In addition to AUR faculty, the workshops were presented by specialists from the ministries of labour and social policy, FAO, IOM, the labour unions and NGOs. Building on last year’s work, this spring there will be a series of seminars and workshops on international cooperation and sustainable development. The course is in Italian (with one day in English about Fair Trade,30 March) and is aimed at first and second generation immigrants, Italians students and workers in the voluntary sector looking for practical and academic qualifications. There will be four two-day modules, one per month from February to May on Development Cooperation (17-18 Feb), “More trade than Aid”. ANTIQUITIES AT THE AMERICAN ACADEMY IN ROME Home to a little-known but significant collection of antiquities espite the fact that it largely came into place more than a century ago it has to rank as one of the least-known. Now thanks to the digital age, the museum collection of the American Academy in Rome (AAR) is finally coming into its own. It comprises more than 5,000 artefacts in all, many now viewable on the website nvb.aarome.org. For pottery, there is everything from Greek geometric vases of the eighth century BC to late Roman ware. And that’s just a start. Cinerary urns, jewellery, coins, oil lamps, all sorts of sculpture, Etruscan mirrors, even bits of timber from Caligula’s now-lost ships at Nemi all find a place. Then there are the Roman inscriptions: There are almost 200 of them, most embedded in the walls of the academy’s courtyard. Together they offer so much information about ancient social relations that a BBC documentary on everyday life in imperial Rome structured an episode around them. The collection came together through purchases and donations prior to world war two and the international antiquities laws enforced today. The true founder was archaeologist and connoisseur Richard Norton, director of the old American School of Classical Studies in Rome, a predecessor to today’s AAR. He was born in 1872 as the youngest child of Charles Eliot Norton – social critic, public intellectual, Harvard art historian and first president of the Archaeological Institute of America. Born into immense privilege, the younger Norton led a life that was robust even by the standards of Teddy Roosevelt’s era. In the space of two decades he survived art world intrigue, marital scandal, bitter archaeological rivalries, widely-publicised political missteps, and a 1911 assassination attempt in Libya, finally to earn top French and British war honours for his work in launching (with the help of Edith Wharton and Henry James) and directing the American Ambulance Corps. Sadly, he had no time to relish his hero status; Norton was felled by meningitis in Paris in August 1918. In his lifetime, Norton found himself locked in a fierce rivalry with Bernard Berenson; they fought as competing art agents to Isabella Stewart Gardner for the new Boston museum she created in 1903. Evidently the antiquities that Norton did not send to Boston went to the American School in Rome. His sheer scale of high-quality purchases then served as a magnet for other contemporary donors to fill out that collection. It was in 1911 that the American School of Classical Studies in Rome and the American Academy in Rome (founded 1894, for art and architecture) decided to unite, in a daring disciplinary merger of humanities and the arts. Three years later the two schools took up a new joint home on the Janiculum hill designed by the architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White. When the two academies resolved to cohabit, each brought its own collection of antiquities into the union. Among the pieces evidently belonging to the artists was a nude relief of Silvanus, the Roman god of the woods, dating to the second century BC. The provenance is perfectly known: it was long part of the magnificent art collection of the Villa Ludovisi in Rome. A photograph from 1885, just before the Boncompagni Ludovisi family sold a major portion of its estate for development, shows that the Silvanus was set in the pediment of an outdoor shrine that sheltered the famed Battle

Others stayed put in the Boncompagni Ludovisi palazzo on Via Veneto that is now the American embassy, and at the Casino Aurora on Via Lombardia, a spectacular survival of the Villa Ludovisi that remains the head of the family’s residence. So how did the Silvanus come into possession of the American Academy? It must be associated with the fact that the young institution rented the Casino Aurora from the Boncompagni Ludovisis from 1895 until 1907. As it happens, the Silvanus is not the only ex-Ludovisi piece on the Janiculum: a wall of the AAR courtyard holds a Roman-era Medusa’s head that used to be set into the inner side of a gate to the Villa Ludovisi. Then in the Academy’s entrance vestibule there is a large seated figure identifiable (despite missing appendages) as Mars disarmed by Venus. An inventory of 1633 shows that none other than the villa’s founder, Cardinal Ludovico Ludovisi, had acquired the sculpture. The Academy’s inscriptions and larger marble pieces have been continuously visible, if not always noticed, in its public spaces for most of the past century. However the many smaller artefacts of the museum collection ended up spending a good 50 years in the dark. The outbreak of world war two forced the closure of the AAR museum and the transfer of its contents to storage. There the objects remained until the late 1980s, when a group of Academy veterans resolved to make these evocative examples of ancient material culture once again available to AAR scholars and artists. Following two decades of effort the work is nearing completion. The collection has found a new, stylish space in the Academy compound, dedicated to the memories of Richard Norton and classicist Albert William Van Buren, who studied and cared for the collection in its first incarnation. The website nvb.aarome.org features detailed work by Academy scholars on several thousand individual items, with a round of updates scheduled for spring 2012. A conservation programme is in full swing, in collaboration with the Accademia Belle Arti di Frosinone, and a new print publication on the collection’s highlights and a separate volume on the inscriptions are slated to appear soon. For now, scholars outside the AAR can visit the museum collection only online. But still there are hundreds of permanently displayed objects to discover while attending one of the many open events that the Academy offers. It’s amazing that they’ve been there all along. T. TO EDITH FROM MARY he cover of 21 December 2011 edition of Wanted in Rome was a watercolour by Edith Schloss on a musical score by Alvin Curran. It was to tie in with their exhibition “The Painted Song” to open on the same day at Casa delle Letterature. Edith didn’t live to see either the cover or the opening of the exhibition. She died the day before. She would have been sad not to be there, although in a conversation we had about 10 days previously she said that she had never felt so detached from an exhibition. She had nevertheless supervised every detail, from the contents of the catalogue to the hanging of the works. Everything was as she wanted. Edith was certainly frail, but at 92 she still had the energy and the creative mind of someone half her age. She gathered together her last exhibition with masterly determination after her return from Pietrasanta where she went each summer to paint. BODY WORLDS 14 Sept-12 Feb How does your body work? The technique, called “plastination”, invented by the controversial German anatomist Gunther von Hagen, illustrates in graphic detail the most intricate parts of our bodies, muscles, nerves and skin as well as the major organs such as the heart and lungs. The von Hagen technique uses a mix of plastic resin and silicone to substitute the fluids and fat in real organs in order to preserve them. About 200 real parts illustrate how the body works, what it looks like when it is healthy and what it looks like when it is diseased. The exhibition is open into the evenings from Fri-Sun. The plot focuses on the two Brewster sisters, Martha and Abby, who have lived in their father’s house in Brooklyn all their lives and now as elderly ladies share it with their nephew Teddy. The two fondly tolerate Teddy’s firm belief that he is President Roosevelt, even to the extent of allowing him to dig the Panama Canal in their cellar. Their domestic bliss is enhanced by the increasingly regular visits of Teddy’s brother Mortimer who grows ever more fond of Elaine Harper, living next door. It seems that things will lead to the inevitable happy conclusion but when Mortimer makes a disturbing discovery the path to a happy ending becomes anything but clear. In English. Teatro S. FESTIVALS ROME EQUILIBRIO FESTIVAL DELLA NUOVA DANZA 5-27 Feb At its eighth edition, the cutting edge dance festival is headed once again by acclaimed choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. FESTIVAL CONTROTEMPO 2012 24-28 Jan Organised by the French Academy in Rome, this contemporary music festival is in its third edition. The programme highlights the ties between French and Italian contemporary composers. This year the festival pays tribute to composer Fausto Romitelli (1963-2004) whose research connected tonal harmonies with expressions of psychedelic rock. DANCE BOLOGNA VANCOUVER CITY DANCE THEATRE 26 Jan In Dreams of Dalì, choreography by Roberta Baseggio. This is a multimedia event inspired by the work of artist Salvador Dalì. The Italianborn choreographer describes it as a combination of dance, theatre, and 3-D projection with original sets and costumes. She says she chose Dalì and his symbolic dream world as subject matter for this work because she believes that properly understood, the inner world of dreams can be used as a way of navigating through the waking world and understanding that which can’t be experienced through the senses. 3-D technology is used in

conceived and created a work that is a fusion of two distinct styles of movement: the earthy, flowing style of his contemporary work and the grand classical ballet of the Bolshoi dancers. was created by its original leading man, Dein Perry, in 1995. It’s a post-”Stomp” dance show, with dancers in everyday clothes, thumping rhythms out of the metal platforms and girders of Nigel Triffitt’s set. 15 years on, Tap Dogs is still an entertaining performance. It moves briskly from routine to routine, bringing in props from flashlights and steelworking tools that send out sparks. Basketballs thump alongside the stamping feet, and rhythms become more and more complex as the dancers time the bounces, throws and catches. They also stamp through trays of water spraying the audience in the front row. All in all, the crowd-pleasing show makes an undemanding, energetic evening. This latest work by the acclaimed choreographer from Belgium and Morocco is inspired by Japanese animator Osamu Tezuka (creator of Astro Boy) and all things manga. With a cast of nine dancers, two musicians, an actor and a calligrapher, plus projections by video artist Taki Ueda, Cherkaoui brings Tezuka’s drawings to life. The story is only one aspect of this multimedia piece, which is strong on design and imagery, much of it related to paper, writing, drawing and ink. The dancers paint each other with letters and move like brushstrokes. Scrolls unfurl from the ceiling, on to which are projected animated columns of calligraphy; or they’re rolled out like parchment pathways, paper trails for the characters to follow. The protagonist is a storyteller named Luna (Moon), who travels the world to collect curious stories, fairy tales and legends which she repeats to the audience with the help of puppets and dolls. OPERA OPERA NOTES To mark the International Day of Memory the Filarmonica presents a concert entitled Gli Indifferenti that reflects on how the “monstrous” and the “normal” can coexist. At S. Cecilia there is a performance of the oratorio Il Libro dei Sette Sigilli composed by Franz Schmidt in 1938, the year that Hitler annexed Austria. It was Schmidt’s last and most important work, and its strong religious inspiration culminates in a final rousing Hallelujah of hope, reminiscent of Handel’s in the Messiah. L’Accademia Filarmonica Romana, presso la Sala Casella di Via Flaminia 118 (sede storica della fondazione), proporrà il 27 gennaio alle ore 10:30 e alle ore 21:00 un concerto di musica e di canzoni, con la lettura di documenti d’epoca; saranno impegnati il soprano Monica Bacelli, l’attore Fabrizio Gifuni e la pianista Luisa Prayer. Il concerto s’intitola Gli indifferenti e vuole offrire l’occasione per riflettere sul “mostruoso” che coabita con il “normale”, sul male che è sempre in agguato e che bisogna saper riconoscere per poi poter prenderne le distanze. Il concerto è legato al fatto che il 27 gennaio 1945 furono aperti i cancelli di Auschwitz e si scoprirono gli orrori dei campi di sterminio nazisti; dal 2000 questa giornata è stata istituita dal Parlamento Italiano come “Il Giorno della Memoria” per ricordare e non dimenticare la Shoah e tutte le vittime del nazismo, perché mai più tali crimini si ripetano per nessun popolo, in nessun tempo e in nessun luogo. Al Parco della Musica di Roma, per la Stagione di Musica Sinfonica dell’Accademia Nazionale di S. Cecilia, sarà eseguito l’oratorio Il libro dei Sette Sigilli di Franz Schmidt (11, 13 e 14 febbraio). Ebbe la sua prima a Vienna il 15 gennaio 1938, l’anno della “pacifica” annessione dell’Austria alla Germania di Adolf Hitler. Il testo si basa sul Libro dell’Apocalisse di S. Giovanni ed è la base di una complessa partitura di ampie dimensioni, che mostra la capacità e l’intelligenza musicali di Schmidt di saper usare e fondere insieme elementi sinfonici, contrappuntistici e vocali; impiega anche l’organo in un ruolo virtuosistico. Il libro dei Sette Sigilli è l’ultimo lavoro composto da Schmidt (muore nel 1939 a sessantacinque anni) ma è anche la sua opera più importante e significativa; è di forte ispirazione religiosa, accesa e drammatica, culmina in un poderoso “Hallelujah”, che risuona come un grido di speranza e che non sfigura affatto accanto a quello celeberrimo di Händel. Questa proposta romana del Libro dei Sette Sigilli sarà affidata al direttore Fabio Luisi (un sensibile e preparato interprete della musica del Novecento), all’organista Michael Schönheit e tra i solisti al basso Günther Groissböck e al tenore Herbert Lippert, che canteranno i ruoli della Voce di Dio e dell’Evangelista Giovanni.
