DANCe LIMON DANCE COMPANY 10 March Universally acclaimed as one of the founding fathers of modern dance, many of Josè Limon’s creations reflect his MexicanAmerican heritage, and some clearly exhibit the love of music that he inherited from his father, who was a conductor. One of his main concerns was to present “the grandeur of the human spirit and the basic tragedy of man”. Limon’s dance style is magnificently strong, masculine and elegant as witnessed by his company that lives on, breathing new life into a vast repertory of works left by its founder who died in 1972. ROME DAVE ST-PIERRE 24-26 Feb In Un Peu De Tendresse Bordel De Merde! choreography by Dave St-Pierre. This is a controversial work that explores the fears and fantasies of 22 characters as they search for love in a brutal world. It’s a work in which the dancers have to perform naked for much of the time, even bringing their nakedness right down into the auditorium amongst the audience. The Canadian choreographer St-Pierre is fascinated by taboos and breaking them. Here he is trying to create a physical intimacy between dancer and audience. Tendresse was performed at Sadlers Wells with a guidance rating of 18, and all its publicity contains warnings of “explicit adult material”. What’s more, the dancers point out, if anyone in the audience obviously hates what the dancers are doing, they won’t get picked on. For Festival equilibrio. Auditorium Parco della Musica, Viale P. de Coubertin. For booking and information tel. 0680241281, www.auditorium.com. KO MUROBUSHI 25 Feb In Intermezzo Roma, choreography by Ko Murobushi. Murobushi is a Butoh dancer whose explorations deliberately seek to subvert conventional notions of dance. He studied with Tatsumi Kijikata who devised Ankoku Butoh as a Japanese expression that allowed the body to speak for itself, and not through a prescriptive, acquired movement language. Murobushi creates imagery in the spectator’s mind of what the spectator thinks there is to be seen in the dancer’s movement and stillness. For Festival equilibrio. Auditorium Parco della Musica, Viale P. de Coubertin. For booking and information tel. 0680241281, www.auditorium.com.

MOPA 27 Feb In esperame despierto, choreographed and directed by Juan Kruz Diaz de Garaio esnaola. The translation of the title being “Wait up for me”, this is a duet interpreted by eloisa Canton and Juan Matilla on stage alone with the accompaniment of a violin. The spectator is invited to observe the ever-changing relationship between a couple playing with the metaphor of abandonment. The young Spanish dancer/choreographer de Garaio esnaola, was noted by dance critics when he worked with the Berlin-based Sacha Waltz company before going solo. For Festival equilibrio. Auditorium Parco della Musica, Viale P. de Coubertin. For booking and information tel. 0680241281, www.auditorium.com LES BALLETS TROCKADERO DE MONTECARLO 7-8 March The secret of this New York-based company of male dancers who perform all the parts including the female roles (complete with tutus, leotards and dancing on point) is their respect and love of ballet. Their parodies of the classics have deep foundations and their dancing is excellent. Affectionately knows as “the Trocks”, the company never desecrates ballet, just the vanity of ballet dancers. Underneath all the jesting and the preening, there is some solid dancing. Some sequences - like a grand classique pas de deux
- are delivered straight until the very last moment. It’s no surprise that Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo has been around for 37 years. Auditorium Conciliazione, Via della Conciliazione 4, tel. 800904560, www.auditoriumconciliazione.it. BALLETTO DEL TEATRO DELL’OPERA 6-10 March In an evening dedicated to American Dance Masters. Berna and his company of six dancers set pure flamenco dance to traditional Spanish folk music. He brings a fresh interpretation to traditional moves and is inspired by the northern Spanish jota dance. The show is theatrical, and Berna engrosses the audience. The musicians are not just left to act as backers for the dancers but have their own solos including a violin and a bagpipe. First produced for the edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2002, Robert Farquhar’s black comedy is described as part ghost story and part road movie, a passionate and ultimately uplifting story of life, love and friendship. The action involves little more than getting a just departed friend, Mick, cremated, his flat cleared and his ashes scattered in Scotland. But it becomes more than this: a hungover speculation on death presented as a dramatic poem for the three voices of Henry, Kev and Holly, a trio of misfits. In Italian. OPERA NOTES The two operas in Pisa, Zanetto by Mascagni and Mozart e Salieri by Rimski-Korsakov are conducted by Francesco Pasqualetti and directed by the tenor Gianluca Floris. In Rome the Accademia Filarmonica offers two unusual works, Partita a Pugni by Vieri Tosatti which was very successful when first performed in Venice in 1953 and a new composition commissioned by the Filarmonica, Frecciarotta, by Riccardo Panfili an up-and-coming Italian composer. 065800919
€ This pizzeria is also nicknamed “L’Obitorio” (the morgue in English) because its tables are covered with slabs of marble. The pizza is thin, Roman style, and good. Even fried appetisers (fiori di zucca and supplì) are not bad. Prices are very reasonable in relation to the quality and quantity of food. The atmosphere is chaotic, but it can also be fun. The only real drawback is the queue if you arrive at rush hour (around 21.00) especially on weekends.
