Fagin and Oliver Twist in Roman Polanski’s film of the famous Dickens novel.

Rome and Milan join the worldwide celebrations of Charles Dickens with seminars and conferences

A

s readers of Wanted in Rome will be aware, this year marks the bicentenary of Dickens’ birth and is being widely celebrated around the globe. Dickens would undoubtedly approve of this because he was himself a great celebrator of famous birthdays. On 22 April 1854 he hosted a dinner to celebrate Shakespeare’s birthday in the Garrick Club in london, declaring: “We meet on this day to celebrate the birthday of a vast army of living men and women who will live for ever with an actuality greater than that of the men and women whose external forms we see around us.” The army of men he was referring to were of course Hamlet, Viola, lear, Rosalind, Falstaff, lady Macbeth, Caliban. It is now our turn to celebrate Nell, Scrooge, Miss Havisham, Samuel Pickwick and Fagin and to wonder at their timeless appeal and at that of Dickens himself. He “went global” in his own lifetime, but how has this global appeal been maintained for 200 years? Why is it that Dickens resonates so much for so many people? Dickens’ success is currently a hot topic in the world’s press. Among the reasons they have listed for it is the way he appeals to the child in his readers, conjuring up a world of good and evil that combines our worst fears and greatest consolations. It is a world of extremes that engages the imagination, but it is also imbued with the kind of social realism and lifelike details that readers recognise. And of course there is characterisation. Not just the number and variety – there are 150 characters in Bleak House alone – but the way he minutely describes individual quirks to produce caricatures we somehow believe in. The success with which his stories have transferred to stage, screen and radio has clearly cemented his appeal over the last 50 years. As a writer of serialised fiction, he knew how to plot a story that would get a reader wondering what on earth was going to happen next. Even now we ask ourselves who Edwin Drood’s murderer was in his last unfinished novel. He knew how to get readers coming back for more. This mastery of the art of episodic writing may also be one of the reasons Dickens’ stories work so well on screen. Another is that Dickensian grotesques and eccentrics are ideal roles for cameo performances by character actors. Older readers will remember BBC adaptations of the 1970s with ham actors in frock coats, Wanted in Rome 7 March 2012

whereas more modern productions such as Andrew Davies’ have tried to make Dickens more sexy and relevant. Gillian Anderson’s recent performance of Miss Havisham in Great Expectations has been memorably described as a cross between Courtney love and luna lovegood. No matter how good or bad the performance, these productions attract huge global audiences. As a person Dickens is fascinating but hard to decipher and Claire Tomalin’s recent Charles Dickens: A life does much to unravel this complexity. He was an obsessive, insisting on going to sleep with his head pointing north and moving his bed around until it was in the right sleeping position. He thought nothing of taking frequent 26-mile walks from one of his houses in Tavistock Square to the other one in Gad’s Hill. So he was clearly a driven man. But driven by what, exactly? Anger? Childhood fears? Sexual frustration? Whatever his inner demons were, his stories were an outlet for them. Dickens turned his nocturnal ramblings into a spooky essay called Night Walks, while Bleak House begins with the single word “london” and he locates most of his novels there. Indeed if Dickens had a Muse it was probably london itself – “full of foul and frowsy dens, where vice is closely packed and lacks the room to turn”. Weird and wired as he was, it is easy to see his prodigious literary output as the product of his singular obsessiveness. If the way Dickens’ psychological complexity is represented in his work has been a major theme of his biographers and literary critics, his public persona is also controversial. Critics and biographers have shown that Dickens’ reputation as an advocate of social reform should be set against evidence of an occasional propensity for lazy thinking and tabloid writing. In an essay on Dickens’ “dark side”, Christopher Hitchens describes how Dickens’ chapter on slavery in American Notes, derived largely from an abolitionist pamphlet, seems designed to discredit America and to act as a supplement to his scorn for American Revolution sympathisers and his hostility to the Union. He points out how Dickens also offered his services as a propagandist for the deterrent effects of the brutal regime in Australian penal colonies, how he applauded the violent quelling of a revolt in Jamaica in 1865 and even recommended genocide for participants in the 3

Indian rebellion of 1857, claiming that he would use “merciful swiftness of execution to exterminate [these people from] the face of the Earth.” Dickens’ racist comments about negroes, though commonplace at the time, are shocking to modern readers and his portrayal of the fictitious Borrioboola Gha in Bleak House now fails to amuse. Finally, of course, there is the appalling treatment meted out to his wife, whom he removed from his house so that the young actress Ellen Ternan could move in. Dickens’ marriage and his relationship with Ternan have been dissected in Claire Tomalin’s The Invisible Woman and he does not come out of it well. Finally, the global Dickens brand has been maintained because he is easy to market. His focus on london, a city so familiar to a global readership, is perhaps the single most important marketing feature in his work. His travel writing is another. It is fascinating to read Dickens’ Pictures from Italy alongside Tomalin’s account of what Dickens got up to during his year-long tour of Italy in 1844, when he spent a great deal of time and energy experimenting with mesmerism in an attempt to cure Augusta De la Rue, the wife of a friend, of an unspecified mental illness. Only a man like Dickens could combine sightseeing and social commentary with a prolonged psychological experiment of dubious motivations. To celebrate and discuss these and other aspects of Dickens’ life and work, a seminar on “International Dickens”, organised by the British Council and the Associazione Italiana di Anglistica, will be held at the British School at Rome at 10.00 on 13 March. DICkENS TRAVElS TO ROME

I

talo Calvino once defined a “classic” as the sort of book that people always say they are rereading, and never just reading. And with the Dickens 2012 bicentenary well underway, readers the world over are joyously (re)discovering some of this great man’s best and best-known works. By Calvino’s definition, Pictures from Italy (1846) has little claim to classic status. But anyone curious to know what Italy might have once looked, smelt, sounded, tasted and felt like would do well to read this travelogue, the result of a year spent by its author immersing himself in Italian life, which still boasts a freshness and intensity so often lacking in recent travel writing. That’s not to say it’s perfect, for Dickens sometimes slips into prejudice and exaggeration, inaccuracy and inconsistency, just as he does in his fiction. But in some respects it is the fact that he is only human, indeed so very human, that makes him so loved to this day. The Italy of Dickens is in turns curiously different and curiously similar to the one we know now. His depiction of Rome’s teeming Jewish ghetto – then still a walled community and locked each night at eight – is as alien to us as a mediaeval city-state. But just a few paragraphs later and the “extraordinary confusion” involved in a visit to the Sistine Chapel, with its “besieging crowd”, is reassuringly familiar. As always, Dickens’ ability to impress upon on the mind’s eye and ear is second to none. When I look out the windows of the keats-Shelley House and see the bustling Spanish Steps, I’m reminded of the colourful characters he saw on them, then artists’ models posing, “waiting to be hired”. I wonder what Dickens would make of the Steps’ 21st-century tourists and vendors if he were here in Rome right now? Giuseppe Albano Giuseppe Albano is the curator of the keats-Shelley House at the foot of the Spanish Steps, Piazza di Spagna 26. 4

BEllI'S ROMANESCO SONNETS

R

esidents of Rome will be familiar with the white marble statue of Giuseppe Gioachino Belli that stands at the Ponte Garibaldi end of Viale Trastevere. With his cape, his cane and his top hat, it is as if the poet still observes the descendants of the people he recorded in his satirical sonnets. Born in Rome in 1791, Belli began writing sonnets in Italian at an early age, on the suggestion of his lifelong friend, the poet Francesco Spada. However he discovered his true passion in his mid-twenties when he switched to romanesco, the vernacular of Rome’s salt-of-the-earth citizens. Belli set about documenting the extra-curricular pursuits of workingclass Romans with a fervour that resulted in a staggering legacy of 2,279 sonnets, most of which veer between the indecent and downright obscene. His was an irreverent city populated by pimps, prostitutes and prelates. The fact that Belli’s Roman sonnets survived at all is a miracle, as just before his death in 1863 the poet requested they be burnt. Thankfully his dying wishes were ignored and, almost 150 years after his sonnets were saved from the flames, scholar Michael Sullivan has translated 323 of them into a unique form of English. An Englishman of Irish descent, Sullivan dips into the British Isles’ deep colloquial pool, relocating Belli’s human comedy to a world where Cockney is spliced with Glaswegian, Belfast meets Brummie, a bawdy Dublin encounters a no-nonsense Yorkshire. Among the unexpected contemporary personalities he refers to in the translations are Houdini, Gucci Belli stands guard over Ponte Garibaldi. and Sharon Stone, while those familiar with london will recognise references to the Bailey, Number Ten, the Palladium and kew. Irish references include shillelaghs and “eejit” (idiot), and even transport gets refreshed: a carrozza becomes a “RollsRoyce”. In the past others have tried their hands at translating Belli’s sonnets into English, notably Anthony Burgess whose 1977 novel Abba Abba – which includes a fictional Roman meeting between Belli and keats – features 79 translated sonnets. Burgess was inspired while living in a thirdfloor apartment in Piazza S. Cecilia, a few side-streets away from Belli’s monument, in the early 1970s. Others who have tackled Belli include Cheshire’s Mike Stocks, who published 60 sonnets in 2007. Stocks began the task after discovering the work of Edinburgh poet Robert Garioch who translated 220 of Belli’s sonnets into Scots dialect. The Scotsman learnt his Italian the hard way: while serving with the British army in libya in 1942 he was captured by German troops and spent the next three years as a prisoner of war in camps in Italy, Africa, Austria and Germany. In the 1950s American beat poet Harold Norse had more fun translating Belli’s works, “with a dictionary in one hand and a Roman in the other.” Sullivan argues that previous translators took freedoms with Belli’s strict Wanted in Rome 7 March 2012

rhyming scheme, overcoming obstacles by employing enjambement (the breaking of a syntactic unit by the end of a line or between two verses). He believes the help that some received with deciphering romanesco was “sometimes inadequate” and that “Burgess can altogether mistake and invert a meaning.” Sullivan said: “The sonnet chosen had first to seem a good poem, then to interest by its content or its technical solutions, and not be too determined by local or contemporary reference as to make it difficult to grasp without a note. I did not want to cover too much ground already tilled by Norse, Burgess, Garioch, Stocks and others – with Garioch, previously the most prolific translator with 220 sonnets, I share only 28. This means that there is much more of Belli available in English than one might imagine.” Although difficult to source a sonnet that wouldn’t risk offending the more sensitive reader, below see Belli’s Er bottegaro with Sullivan’s version titled The shopkeeper. Its subject is topical, given Italian premier Mario Monti’s push for the liberalisation of various forms of licensing, but note that Sullivan updates Belli’s reference to seeking permission for opening a shop from ecclesiastical to municipal sources. The shopkeeper If yer wanna open a shop these days, afore evythin’ else, away yer goes the Town ‘All registry, an’ then ‘oo knows yer wait a year an’ yer gets the Ok. Yer gets open at last an’ then in blows Fire an’ ‘Ealth inspector to ‘ave ‘is say, where’s yer license, dated when, ‘oo, wot way, an’ when everything’s checked, they makes yer close. Yer deal wiv that as well: then on yer back comes some VAT inspector wot’s hot to know ye’re not workin’ in the black, yer shows everything’s straight: an’ nah wot? they brings in a new law an’ snicker-snack they gobbles up the shop an’ all ye’ve got. While Belli was often gloriously vulgar in his sonnets, outwardly he lived a politically-conservative existence. This ironic double life saw him employed as a censor for the papal government, where he was responsible for banning works by, among others, Verdi, Rossini and Shakespeare. It is curious to imagine how Belli would react if he knew that English versions of his work recently received applause from an audience at Trastevere’s John Cabot University or indeed that Sullivan, along with fellow associates of Rome’s Centro Studi Belli, read the poet’s sonnets from the hallowed stage of the Accademia Nazionale di S. luca. exHIBITIONS MIRO’! POESIA E LUCE 16 March-10 June Over 80 works by Juan Mirò that have never been shown in Italy before. There are large oil paintings, watercolours, terracotta and bronze sculptures, all on loan from the Fundaciò Pilar i Juan Mirò in Palma de Mallorca, the institution which owns most of the artist’s patrimony. Although the works span the entirety of Mirò’s career, the exhibition focuses on the works he created during the 30 years he lived in Mallorca, from 1956 to his death in 1983, a particularly serene and productive time for the artist. Works on show include Femme dans la rue (1973), Untitled (1978) and the bronze Femme (1967). Chiostro del Bramante, Arco della Pace 5, tel. 0668809035. 10.00-20.00. Mon closed. NEW VETRI A ROMA 21 Feb–16 Sept Roman and Hellenistic objects trace the history of glass and glassmaking during antiquity. The display focuses on the art of glassmaking and illustrates the many different uses for glass, ancient glassmaking techniques and how glass was used by all social classes, both in the creation of luxury items as well as for useful everyday objects. Curia Iulia, Roman Forum, Via dei Fori Imperiali, tel. 063996770. From 08.30 to one hour before sunset. NEW PLEGARIA MUDA 15 March–24 June This project by artist Doris Salcedo comprises over 120 sculptural units that fill up the entire Gallery 2 of the MAxxI museum. The work is the result of three years of research in the ghettoes of southeast Los Angeles. Plegaria Muda responds to acts of violence with a contemplative stillness. It does not tell stories of individual victims, but in silence it gives voice to a collective trauma that has caused festering wounds throughout an entire social fabric. Museo Nazionale delle Arti del xxI secolo, Via Guido Reni 4/a, tel. 0639967350, www.fondazionemaxxi.it. 11.00-19.00, Sat 11.00-22.00. Mon closed. NEW SCULTURE DALLE COLLEZIONI SANTARELLI E ZERI 27 March-1 July This exhibition is dedicated to works belonging to two well-known Italian art collectors: the art critic Federico Zeri, and Paola Santarelli who belongs to an important entrepreneurial family. The works are on show for the first time to the public and reflect the interests and the tastes of Zeri and Santarelli, both of whom show great sensitivity to sculpture, notwithstanding their differing positions. The Santarelli collection consists mostly of archaeological finds from antiquity to the 18th century, with a special focus on coloured marble and the history of Rome. Zeri’s collection is important from an historical, artistic and philological point of view and focuses on figurative art. Fondazione Roma Museo, Palazzo Cipolla, Via del Corso 320, tel. 0639967888. 11.0020.00. Mon closed. SILVIA STUCKY. IL CAMPO DEL POSSIBILE 5-23 March In this exhibition Stucky examines the ultimate possibility, the choice open to her in a situation in which ill health no longer allows her to make autonomous decisions about her life and the treatment she should, or should not, be given. A series of thought-provoking photographs of her shadow (titled anima) are displayed opposite a framed diptych – one of blue granite and the other of painted blue paper, one hard and durable, the other flexible and fragile – behind which is hidden her living will (testamento biologico). Stucky points out that although shadows are often seen as symbols of death, only a living person can have a shadow and only when the sun – without which life is impossible – is shining. The artist has gone down the road of making her living will, knowing full well that although she has done all that is legally required in Italy at the moment there is still a legislative vacuum surrounding the subject. The exhibition concludes the third part of 41°54’N-12°28’E curated by

MARIO SASSO, CÒLLANT 5-31 March For decades, Mario Sasso has explored the theme of the city, and the possibilities of painting, video, electronics, and unorthodox materials. These aspects are also present in his latest solo exhibition at Mara Coccia Arte Contemporanea, entitled Collant. The exhibition consists of two parts, each with a different installation, title and curator (Silvia Bordini and Annalisa Filonzi respectively), and is connected to the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy – though it rather hints at its current fragmentation. Both parts of the exhibition comprise mixed media elements, and video works using LCD screens and projection and include music expressly composed by Nicola Sani. The main work of the first part, Dove si incontrano le città (3 Feb-3 March), was a wall-bound piece whose inkjetprinted, shaped, padded PVC elements are based on a Piranesi print from Le Antichità Romane, of fragments of the Forma Urbis, the monumental marble map of Rome created under Septimius Severus at the beginning of the third century AD. Alongside this main piece, a video work made up of ten small LCD screens, each showing a slow walk in an iconic place of the historic city. The second part, Frammenti morali di contemporaneità (5-31 March), presents a wall-sized video projection of a walk, made at the first light of dawn, through the centre of Rome in places historically associated with power. Here too there are inkjet-printed, padded PVC elements, shaped like the 20 regions of Italy, in two different configurations: as a floor piece, with the ‘regions’ arranged in three groups, each painted with one colour of the Italian flag; and as a wall-bound tableau, where the magnetised elements can be arranged as desired by the public. Is a different Italy possible, the artist seems to ask? Mara Coccia Associazione per la promozione dell’arte contemporanea, Via del Vantaggio 46/a, tel. 063224434, www.maracoccia.com. DANCe BOLOGNA LIMON DANCE COMPANY 10 March Universally acclaimed as one of the founding fathers of modern dance, many of Josè Limon’s creations reflect his Mexican-American heritage, and some clearly exhibit the love of music that he inherited from his father, who was a conductor. One of his main concerns was to present “the grandeur of the human spirit and the basic tragedy of man”. Limon’s dance style is magnificently strong, masculine and elegant as witnessed by his company that lives on, breathing new life into a vast repertory of works left by its founder who died in 1972. dancer and choreographer Thierry Malandain, whom after a successful career as a dancer, founded the dance company “Temps présent” in 1986, and since 1998 he has been directing The Centre Chorégraphique National in Biarritz. He has created more than 62 choreographies in neoclassical style and many of them have been performed by other companies around the world. ROME LES BALLETS TROCKADERO DE MONTECARLO 7-8 March The secret of this New York-based company of male dancers who perform all the parts including the female roles (complete with tutus, leotards and dancing on point) is their respect and love of ballet. Their parodies of the classics have deep foundations and their dancing is excellent. Affectionately knows as “the Trocks”, the company never desecrates ballet, just the vanity of ballet dancers. Underneath all the jesting and the preening, there is some solid dancing. Some sequences - like a grand classique pas de deux - are delivered straight until the very last moment. It’s no surprise that Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo has been around for 37 years. Auditorium Conciliazione, Via della Conciliazione 4, tel. 800904560, www.auditoriumconciliazione.it. OPERA NOTES Di Frau ohne schatten by Richard Strauss is a difficult opera for conductor, singers and audience alike, but the effort is richly repaid by the beauty of the music. It is conducted at La Scala by Marc Albrecht, the new musical director of the Amsterdam Opera, and directed by Claus Guth. Mariella Devia, an international star of belcanto, and the up-and-coming tenor Shalva Mukeria are the protagonists of Donizetti’s Anna Bolena in Florence, conducted by Roberto Abbado and directed by Graham Vick. Paolo Di Nicola
