CRAFT BEER COMES OF AGE Home-brewed and craft beer is a growing phenomenon in Rome
T
hanks to a small group of creative and industrious craft brewers, the city of Rome has become the crux of a fast-growing trend in the experimentation, production, marketing and consumption of original beer. In a country once considered almost exclusively dedicated to the sophisticated wine manufacture, a handful of “homebrewers” have sparked a revolution while ardently devoting creative energies to “the other beverage”. As a result, over the past decade craft beer production has been on the rise throughout Italy, and Rome is the focus of this trend. Beer production has ancient roots in Italy dating back to the Etruscans who produced a type of fermented malt beverage. However in modern history there has only been a handful of major industry beers available in Italy. Craft beer enthusiasts are now producing inventive brews for local consumption and export. Starting in 1995 with the first modern artisanal brewing company in Italy, Baladin Brewing, Italy’s craft beer production has made inroads, as there are now over 350 microbreweries in the peninsula. Craft beer production is predominant in the regions of Lombardy and Piedmont, in close proximity to the larger Italian industrial beers such as Moretti or Forst, which have dominated the beer market for decades. According to gastronomic expert Katie Parla, craft or artisanal beer is defined by small production, fine ingredients, rare grains and local products and it is these experts who have had more success than the major producers from the north in marketing their produce in Rome. Therefore, Rome has become the main outlet for Italy’s craft brews. One group of enthusiasts in particular, including Fabio Zaniol, has contributed to the development of the craft beer trend in Rome by inaugurating brewpubs that offer a variety of bottled beers and beers on tap, as well as a shop selling bottles of craft beer from around the world and home-brewing equipment and ingredients. Zaniol and his business partners opened Domus Birrae on Via Cavour about two years ago, where they sell bottles of Belgian, American, Danish, Italian and a wide variety of other craft beers. He claims that his shop is the only place in Rome to supply ingredients and equipment to make your own fermented cereal beverage in the comfort of your home with your own innovative methods. The store sells roasted barley, flaked barley and malt extract next to brewing equipment such as tanks designed for the processes of malting, boiling, milling, fermenting and filtering. The owners of Domus Birrae are also responsible for providing beer fanatics with the establishment of Ma Che Siete Venuti a Fa’ in Trastevere, which opened about 11 years ago. The pub is small and grungy, but they stress the cleanliness and maintenance of their tap plants, carefully treated to serve beer in the best condition. Due to its popularity the same proprietors later opened Bir and Fud, a pizzeria serving craft beers on tap just across the street, with another premises in the Marconi neighbourhood. Commenting on the growing trend of craft beer in Italy, Parla stressed that because the movement is so new it is not yet heavily-regulated like the wine industry, and this allows space for experimentation. On the Wanted in Rome 4 April 2012
Open Baladin, near Campo de’ Fiori, is owned by the founders of the largest brewery in Lazio.
Italian ingenuity of craft beer production, Parla says the use of chestnut flowers and local fruits are Italy’s most creative contributions to artisanal beer, along with the addition of shellfish to an oyster stout. Parla received her master degree in Italian gastronomic culture from Tor Vergata University, and a sommelier certificate that includes specialisation in both beer and wine, and she leads beer-tasting events as part of a company she founded called Parla Food that offers culinary tours. At a recent event at Open Baladin, connoisseurs tasted “Enkyr” beer made from an Egyptian grain milled in Piedmont, an oyster stout made with the addition of French oysters during the boiling process, and a barley wine so-named because the alcohol content is the same as wine. Open Baladin is located near Campo de’ Fiori and owned by the founders of the Baladin brewing company and Birra del Borgo in Rieti, the largest brewery in Lazio. As for Italy having long been considered a nation of wine, Parla suggested that the traditional popularity of wine over beer was not due to taste but rather to economics. She says that wine is cheaper and easier to produce, with grapes growing in every region of Italy, as opposed to the more labour-intensive grain cultivation. In fact the use of grapes also in beer making is widespread in Italy and unique to the country. Compared to wine, beer in Italy has been innovatively (and not surprisingly) incorporated into the Italian diet. Italian craft brewers have been pioneers in pairing beer with cooking and food consumption. For example, weiss (a type of light, wheat beer) has been found to pair well with fish dishes, amber beers with braised meats, and stout (dark beer made with roasted malt and barley) has been discovered to fare well in the making of tiramisù. Baladin Brewing is also inventive for ageing beer in barrels that had hosted wines of Italian excellence, thus creating a bond between “two seemingly distant worlds, because beer and wine are both great products from the earth.” Theresa Potenza The fourth edition of the Italia Beer Festival of Rome takes place from 4-6 May at the Atlantico, Viale dell’Oceano Atlantico 271 D, EUR. FLORENCE THE TAPESTRY GALLERY EPIPHANIES OF PRECIOUS FABRICS 20 March-3 June The aim of this exhibition is to acquaint Uffizi Gallery-goers with a precious section of its collections: tapestries. More than other works of art, tapestries are relentlessly consumed by time. Light, dust, and the pull exerted on the fibres due to hanging are the main causes of an inevitable degeneration. For these reasons, in 1987 the tapestries that had lent such elegance to the corridors of the Uffizi Gallery were moved to rooms equipped for their preservation, where they will be exhibited in rotation. Meanwhile visitors can enjoy 17 tapestries from the museum’s collections, including works of 16th-century Flemish manufacture, and 16th- and 17th-century Florentine devotional hangings. THE FORSYTHE COMPANY 13, 14 April In Yes, we can’t, choreography by William Forsythe. The title of this work alludes to obama’s election slogan in early January 2008. Two months later, William Forsythe premiered the show in Dresden. In Forsythe’s verbal distortion, the battle cry of the presidential candidate of the Democratic Party oscillates between affirmation and negation, it combines the enthusiastic up with the inevitable down that followed it, the limitless expectations with the realistic sobering, the words of encouragement with the impossible. Forsythe is acclaimed as one of the world’s most influential choreographers. His early work is acknowledged for reorienting the practice of ballet from its classical repertoire to a dynamic 21st-century art form. His more recent works have extended his research on the potential of dance as a performance style and choreography as a means of creating structure. EDWARD ACZEL 6 April Edward Aczel is a stand-up English comedian. He comes to Rome courtesy of the oppio Caffé, whose new initiative “Cocktail Comedy Club” makes it the first Italian comedy club with an international vocation. Reviewing his show in Edinburgh last summer, The Guardian critic described Aczel as “the least funny comic on the fringe. Forget jokes, timing and technique: Aczel serves up rumpled, shuffling, semi-audible comedy. His genre is really “anti-comedy”, embraced by comics who get their laughs by being so-bad-they’re-good.” In English. oppio Caffé, Via delle Terme di Tito 72, tel. 064745262, www.cocktailcomedyclub.it.

La Scala in Milan stages a production of Tosca by Giacomo Puccini.
OPERA NOTES Mezzo-soprano Cecilia Bartoli sings with the La Scintilla Ensemble in a programme of arias written for eunuchs (castrati) the great mutilated divas of belcanto. In the S. Cecilia symphony season Yuri Temirkanov conducts music by Shostakovich, including Il canto delle foreste which was written in 1949 to celebrate Stalin’s campaign of reforestration after world war two. 0680241281, 892982, www.auditorium.com. Paolo Di Nicola

€ This pizzeria is also nicknamed “L’Obitorio” (the morgue in English) because its tables are covered with slabs of marble. The pizza is thin, Roman style, and good. Even fried appetisers (fiori di zucca and supplì) are not bad. Prices are very reasonable in relation to the quality and quantity of food. The atmosphere is chaotic, but it can also be fun. The only real drawback is the queue if you arrive at rush hour (around 21.00) especially on weekends.

OBITUARIES gretCHen eBen triUlZi On 19 March the Rome community lost a dear friend, Gretchen Eben Triulzi. Although she had been battling illness for some time, the end came unexpectedly, leaving the feeling of not having properly said goodbye. That is probably the way she wanted it. Gretchen was no white handkerchief waver. She went the way she lived, quietly and peacefully. Yet Gretchen was a born leader, head of Student Council, star of the basketball team, most popular camp counselor during her school years in New York at the Convent of the Sacred Heart, where after graduating from Newton College, she returned as gym teacher. Gretchen’s leadership was not of the big boss kind – she was in fact a very reserved person. It was never about me. It was all about you. And it was always done with a sense of humour and a love of laughter. The church word for a retreat – spiritual exercises – perfectly describes the other dimension of Gretchen’s life. She put the same energy into prayer and theological studies as she did a game of tennis or shooting a basket. Her Roman Holiday began in the early 1960s and culminated in her marriage to Stefano in 1969. Six wonderful children (five girls and one boy) and seven grandchildren to date followed. Thank God for those leadership skills. While raising the children, she managed to follow Latin courses at the Gregorian University, religious and theological studies at the Lay Centre at Foyer Unitas – and a truly social service – proofread at Wanted in Rome. Over the years the family went through some very difficult moments, not least Stefano’s heart transplant a number of years ago. Throughout Gretchen was a rock – all about others, never about herself. apartment, 2 bedrooms, bathroom, living-dining room, ample furnished kitchen, built-in closets, €2.500 monthly. “Mom was always the “centro” of our family,” Gretchen’s eldest daughter Sabina said – in that Anglo-Roman language bilingual kids develop. You can tell a lot about a person at their funeral. How many people show up, who they are, and how they interact. Aside from the fact that the extended Triulzi family is so numerous they alone would fill a church, the Church of S. Agostino was packed for Gretchen the following Friday. On the steps after the funeral service, everybody seemed to know everybody else turning the ceremony into a kind of homecoming. The common bond was the friendship shared with Gretchen and her family. She had touched so many people’s lives, and the touch was contagious. So dear friend, we may not have had time to say goodbye, but it’s never too late to say thank you. Daniela Petroff Simpson

PhotograPhs We are opening the pages of Wanted in Rome to budding photographers of the eternal city. What we are looking for are topical and out-of-the-ordinary scenes about everyday life in the Rome, not the usual "postcard" images of tourist sites. Any high-quality, unusual photos we receive will be considered for publication in the magazine or as covers. Please send any images in high resolution digital format to editorial@wantedinrome.com.
