BALLETTO DEL TEATRO ALLA SCALA 3-23 May In Marguerite and Armand choreography by Frederick Ashton, and Concerto DSCH choreography by Alexei Ratmansky, with Svetlana Zakharova, Roberto Bolle, Massimo Murru. Ratmanksy’s work Concerto DSCH on Shostakovich’s 1957 Piano Concerto No. 2 which is a hopeful and joyous work inspired by the end of the Stalin era in Russia. The high spirits of the music are captured in the lively choreography, especially in the roles of the lead dancers, one lyrical couple and a virtuoso trio of two men and one ballerina. Teatro alla Scala, tel. 027203744, www.teatroallascala.it. EIFMAN BALLET ST PETERSBURG 9- 10 May In Anna Karenina, choreography by Boris Eifman. The contemporary Russian choreographer, who runs his own company out of St Petersburg, has often been criticised for his emotional ballets with over-the-top stories. And Tolstoy’s famed tale of infidelity and regret is as overblown as you may expect with much unsubtle symbolism. While most of the ballet is set to Tchaikovsky, Anna’s breakdown is danced to cacophonous modern music giving life to a kind of nightmare vision of purgatory. The performance is interesting, but not for purists. Teatro Arcimboldi, tel. 02641142212. Also in Modena on 6 May at Teatro Comunale Pavarotti, tel. 0592033010, and in Pavia on 8 May at Teatro Fraschini, tel. 0382371214.

gramme is a tribute to the artistic vision of Béjart who died in 2007 and includes Grand Rhythme, choreography by van Hoecke, Eden, choreography by Maguy Marin and Béjart’s own Symphonie pour un homme seul and Gaité Parisienne. Béjart’s vision was of ballet as a 20th-century art form that would be as popular as cinema. His approach to the realisation of his vision was always evolutionary rather than revolutionary. The traditions of classical ballet were to be augmented rather than thrown away. Classical ballet technique was enriched from the dance traditions of India, Africa, China and Japan. Opera house performances were supplemented by spectacular productions in circus arenas and sports centres. During the course of five creative decades, Béjart was the principal author of almost 250 individual dance works (including more than 40 fulllength ballets). It is an output that attracted – and inspired, invigorated and informed – a much wider audience than is drawn to mainstream ballet. Teatro Costanzi, Piazza B. Gigli. OPERA
THEATRE
OPERA NOTES Pier Luigi Pizzi’s successful 1985 production of Händel’s opera Rinaldo goes on stage in Ravenna, Reggio Emilia and Ferrara. This masterpiece of baroque was composed in 14 days and was the secret of Handel’s subsequent success in London. In Venice Jessica Pratt and Shalva Mukeria will be singing in Bellini’s La Sonnambula at La Fenice after their success a year ago in Lucia di Lammermoor.
