A

ncient stones, columns, arches and churches: rome is all of this and much more. The former capital of the world has now entered the new millennium with a new contemporary look. futuristic museums like the giant white mAXXi (museo Nazionale delle Arti del XXi secolo), designed by Zaha hadid, or the red prismatic auditorium in the new part of the mACro (museo d’Arte Contemporanea roma) designed by odile decq have changed the face of the city. however no less important is a series of new bridges to improve traffic across the Tiber. so far only one has been completed – the first since Ponte Nenni was built 30 years ago for the metro between flaminio and Prati. Two more should follow soon but not many people know about them, and although they may be beautiful they are not going to do much to improve traffic.

The first of the new generation is the Ponte della musica, between mAXXi and the Auditorium Parco della musica designed by renzo Piano on one side of the Tiber and the olympic stadium on the other side. The bridge, which was opened in may 2011, is 190 m long and its main characteristics are the two big lateral white arches giving strength and lightness to the structure. it is said to resemble a boat because the pedestrian level is paved with wood and the arches recall the design of a cruise ship. it was first planned in 1929 but only approved in 1999. The following year the british company Powell-Williams Architects won the international competition for the bridge in conjunction with another british firm, buro happold. initially it was designed just for pedestrians and bicycles but later the project, which has cost €8 million, was changed to include a central asphalted part for public transport, even if no trams or buses have crossed it yet. The Ponte della musica is just the first step of a bigger project called “Parco della musica e delle Arti”. This consists of a new park around the Auditorium Parco della musica and Pierluigi Nervi’s Palazzetto dello sport, a pedestrian walk from Villa glori over Viale de Coubertin, the renewal of the Via guido reni area around mAXXi and Teatro olimpico in Piazza gentile di fabriano down to the bridge over the river. The scheme will cost between €8 and €10 million.

The project is far from being realised and Ponte della musica seems to be used by few people for the time being. however it hosted the “Temporaneo” arts festival in 2011, and in April this year the space under the bridge was filled by a tent hosting “Apripista”, the festival of contemporary circus. This was the first time that the riverbank was opened at this point, as the dock and the pedestrian passage from the steps to the river have never been finished and the bicycle path along the river is still blocked.

it is easy to see one of the other new bridges, close to the garbatella underground station, which stretches over the old mercati generali opposite the montemartini museum on Via ostiense. The Cavalcaferrovia ostiense (ostiense railway overpass) is already nicknamed the “Cobra” because of its large white steel arches linked in the centre. designed by engineer francesco del Tosto from the rome-based engineering company solidus, it is 240 m long with one lane for private vehicles and one for public transport in each direction. Construction started in 2009 (although the original idea goes back to 1962) and it should be finished by the end of this year at a total cost of €16 million. it will then be easier to go from garbatella to ostiense, but the bridge was part of a larger, now forgotten project: the traffic should have been able to continue through ostiense and over the Tiber on another bridge. however the city government decided in favour of a different plan: to build Ponte della scienza downstream from Ponte dell’industria between lungotevere Papareschi gassman and its ambitious City of science project in the area around the old decommissioned gasometers in ostiense.

This bridge, which should be finished by mid-2012, has taken four years to build and cost €6.6 million. but it is still dangerous and difficult to reach, and homeless refugees are camped illegally on the riverbanks around it. The Ponte della scienza was meant for pedestrians and bicycles but at present there are steep steps from the bike path along the Tiber up to the surface, so it is not yet clear how cyclists will access the bridge. The rome company APsT Architettura designed the structure, which is 120 m long and 10 m wide, to blend in with the functional surroundings of this ex-industrial area, especially the old gasometers.

Another bridge, Ponte dei Congressi, would have been a great opportunity for the city to improve traffic but at the moment the project is on hold. The bridge should have connected the two banks of the Tiber between the old Viadotto della magliana and the grande raccordo Anulare ring-road, opening a new way for traffic towards fiumicino. it was part of the city’s bid for the 2020 olympic games, but when the olympic bid was rejected by the present government, so was the bridge.

To complete the tour of the Tiber’s new bridges is the new Ponte della scafa, a bridge that is under construction in rome’s 13th municipio, between ostia and the fishing port of fiumicino. The purpose is to improve traffic between ostia, the airport and the motorway, but the discovery of an ancient roman ship a year ago has stopped construction for the time being. once again ancient rome is holding up the construction of the new city, but at least it has some new bridges at long last; all it needs now are some good reasons to cross them. francesco Amorosino 3

W

hen clean hard facts can be gained at the click of a mouse – where once we had to take the time and effort to turn a page – many of us no longer wish to work a little to earn our satisfaction, intellectual or otherwise.

Poetry is an ideal pursuit for those who haven’t completely supplanted the joys of turning with clicking. The source of the english word verse, and the italian word verso, is the latin vertere, to turn. And part of the magic of poetry is the suspense achieved as one line turns into the next, which poets employ to their fullest advantage in a technique called enjambment, where the end of one line rolls into its successor, unhampered by punctuation. Take Keats’s poem fancy, which contains the couplet:

islAmiC CAlligrAPhY reVeAled An exhibition of decorative artworks provides a glimpse into the richness of Islamic calligraphy

An exciting exhibition of contemporary islamic calligraphic art entitled “reflections from heaven, meditations on earth” (riflessioni dal Cielo, meditazioni in Terra) is on show until June in the museum area of the ruins of Trajan’s market above the roman forum. The works on display come from the collection of the Jordan National gallery of fine Arts in Amman and offer a rare and illuminating overview of the wide variety of styles used by modern islamic artists from all over the world, demonstrating how the long, unbroken tradition of Arabic calligraphy, an art form which died out in europe with the advent of the printing press, continues to be developed and adapted to the present day.

The exhibition was three years in preparation, explained Princess Wijdan bint fawaz al-hashemi of Jordan, president of the Jordan royal society of fine Arts and for five years Jordanian ambassador to italy. The choice of venue inside one of rome’s most important ancient monuments was influenced, she said, by the fact that she particularly admires the blend of old and new architecture created in the Trajan markets when restorers encased the great entrance hall in glass panels to protect and enhance the ancient ruins. “We found this combination of old and new very appropriate for an exhibition of calligraphic art which is also a combination of the classic and the modern,” she said.

The 60-plus works on view cover a wide spectrum of contemporary art of islamic inspiration and include water colours, oils, acrylics, etchings, gouaches and mixed media works, ranging from purely abstract studies to landscapes and animal and human forms, all formed out of the highly decorative Arabic script.

The common western belief that muslims were forbidden to represent human forms is a misconception, Princess Wijdan explained. “This is only banned in places of worship to avoid idolatry.” she went on to tell a story, documented by historical sources, that when the Prophet muhammad ordered the destruction of all pagan images in mecca, he spared a column bearing an effigy of the Christian madonna and Child, thus acknowledging it as sacred. dr Khalid Khreis, curator of the Amman gallery, provided a brief account of the history of Arab calligraphy. The islamic alphabet evolved, he said, with the birth of islam in the early seventh century, producing two styles of script – the naskh cursive and the more geometric kufic. As the Prophet dictated the sacred texts of the Koran, the faster and easier cursive was used. Afterwards, his sayings were recorded in the more elaborate kufic. from then onwards, as islam expanded, many other styles with different characteristics evolved, often taking their names from the cities of the countries where they developed. he mentioned the many nuances of meaning and the symbolism linked to the Arab alphabet, such as the identification of the letters with the four elements of water, earth, wind and fire, and the fact that it was once commonly believed that they could influence people’s lives. in the case of calligraphic art, the “beautiful writing” as it is called is used to create pictures, based on either sacred or moral texts, or on “profane” subjects, such as socio-political themes, quotations from literature or simple decorative effects. examples of both types are in the exhibition. The poster used to advertise the event reproduces the stunning silkscreen of two frolicking horses by egyptian artist Ahmad moustafa, which is actually composed of a swirl of ideograms, making up a text. Naturally, this is not apparent to the untrained eye, which only sees an intricate amalgamation of interweaving curves, flourishes and strokes. however, Princess Wijdan explained, the words are instantly apparent to islamic viewers.

more abstract works with a political theme include the word “revolution” on five bold bands of mirror writing by Palestinian Jamal boutata. many works are based on poems, such as the picture by iraqi artist hassan massoudy, based on verses by the Persian poet omar Khayyam, well-known to the english-speaking world thanks to translations by Victorian scholar edward fitzgerald. “since pre-islamic times,” Princess Wijdan said, “the highest expression of art for Arabs has been poetry. Calligraphy satisfies this aesthetic need.”

Princess Wijdan is herself an artist, with works exhibited in major museums in the uK and the usA as well as in the Arab world. in the rome exhibition, her “banners of faith, banners of love”, recalling the drapes the peace-loving sufis hang over the tombs of the departed, is a testimony to her philosophy of peace promoted through art – a policy that she has carried forward in the diplomatic field. she was the first woman to enter the Jordanian ministry of foreign affairs and the first woman delegate to represent her country at the uN general Assembly.

The modern calligraphic movement has given islamic artists a vehicle of expression independent of the influence of western art and calligraphic art, in fact, is attracting growing numbers of followers. “Young artists,” Princess Wijdan said, “are less attracted to the classical style but are intent on developing new areas of conceptual art. The use of calligraphy can be adapted to all areas of art and design, to fashion, architecture, crafts and so on.

ARTURO GHERGO FOTOGRAFIE 1930-1959 3 April-8 July Those who believe that contemporary photography, being mostly digital, marks a departure from the past in the sense of a heightened artificiality, will find food for thought in this exhibition devoted to the work of photographer and painter Arturo Ghergo (1901-1959).

Born in the Marches, Ghergo moved to Rome in 1929, set up his studio in Via Condotti, and came to be prized by the Roman high society for the originality and outstanding quality of his portraits, which involved stylised postures and facial expressions (Ghergo put his sitters through very long poses), elaborate lighting, and painstaking manipulation of the negative and the print.

Among the women who posed for Ghergo’s plate camera were an impressive number of young debutantes of the aristocracy and wealthy bourgeoisie, as well as some of the most famous stars of Italian cinema before and after world war two.

Besides their artistic merit, Ghergo’s photographs are a valuable document of aspects of Italian society, often intertwined with each other: the upper classes with their rituals (the formal photographic portrait, which marked a young woman’s debut in society, engagement, marriage), the world of cinema and entertainment, the fashion houses (represented in his photographs are the most remarkable houses of the time) and also aspects of Italian politics, witnessed by portraits of personalities that left a mark on decades of Italian history, such as Giulio Andreotti or Pope Pius XII. Ghergo’s photographic language and the mannered poses of his models owed a lot to glamour photographers such as George Hoyningen-Huene, Horst P. Horst or Adolph de Meyer, but also to the high-society portraits by turn-of-the century painter Giovanni Boldini. What Bernard Berenson wrote in 1958 about Boldini could suit Ghergo equally well: “he interpreted very well the loftier feminine elegance, at a time when it was overly clad by the artifices of tailors and milliners, figuratively tied in ambiguous poses hovering between the salon and the theatre.”

CHIOSTRO DEL BRAMANTE Bramante’s charming 16th-century cloister (Chiostro del Bramante), just a few steps from Piazza Navona, is famous for its exhibitions but less well-known for its other activities and services.

KAARINA KAIKKONEN TOWARDS TOMORROW 14 April-15 July Kaikkonen is one of Finland’s leading artists, known for her environmental projects and largescale installations realised with simple materials such as clothing or paper. Flórez was born in Lima in 1973 and studied music in Peru until winning a scholarship to the prestigious Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. In the summer of 1996, whilst in Pesaro rehearsing for a small part in an opera, he was offered the leading role of Corradino in Matilde di Shabran when the existing tenor became ill. That role marked the start of his stellar career which has seen him on stage under the baton of Riccardo Muti at La Scala, and subsequently at all the world’s leading opera houses, concert halls and music festivals. His repertoire includes 32 operas and he has worked with the world’s top conductors.

SETTE STORIE PER LASCIARE IL MONDO MARCO BETTA ROMA TRE ORCHESTRA 30 May Sette storie per lasciare il mondo is an opera for music and film in seven parts by Marco Betta and Roberto Andò, first performed in 2006. It is performed by the Roma Tre orchestra conducted by Pietro Mianiti, with the participation of the Mancuso brothers who play traditional Sicilian instruments, and actress Donatella Finocchiaro.

Encouraged by the musician and composer Eliodoro Sollima, Betta began studying composition, and under the latter’s guidance, graduated from the Conservatory of Music of Palermo.

Betta subsequently worked and studied with the likes of Armando Gentilucci and Salvatore Sciarrino. His works for orchestra, chamber orchestra and choir have been successfully performed throughout Europe. He is also a composer for film and theatre.

PORTRAIT OF A COMPOSER: PAWEŁ MYKIETYN AT ACCADEMICA FILARMONICA 31 May Composer and clarinetist Paweł Mykietyn was born in 1971 in oława, Poland. While still a composition student under Włodzimierz Kotoński at the Academy of Music in Warsaw, he debuted in 1993 at the Warsaw Autumn Festival of Contemporary Music with a piece entitled La Strada. His success at that edition of the Warsaw Autumn culminated in a series of new commissions and included the composition of an opera, Ignorant I szaleniec/An Ignoramus and a Madman in 2001. An experimenter in electroacoustic music, in 2008 Mykietyn was awarded Poland’s top arts prize, the oPUS award. The Accademia Filarmonica Romana presents Mykietyn with a concert organised in collaboration with the Polish Institute during which he plays a varied programme of his works. The concert is preceded by the film Tatarak directed by Andrzej Wajda for which Mykietyn wrote the music score.

IN THE GAME OF LAND HOMAGE TO JOHN CAGE 14 June With the Parco della Musica Contemporanea Ensemble, Francesco Carlo Leone and Lucio Perotti pianos, and with the Traditional Gamelan orchestra from Indonesia. Music by John Cage.

This event is a tribute to John Cage on the 100th anniversary of his birth. Throughout the day, entitled “Cageland”, institutions across the city, from MAXXI to the Auditorium and beyond, a myriad of initiatives pay homage to the man Arnold Schoenberg described as “not a composer, but an inventor of genius”. At the Parco della Musica, pianists Francesco Carlo Leone and Lucio Perotti give life to Cage’s 1944 A Book of Music which was commissioned by pianists Robert Fizdale and Arthur Gold. The music makes use of scales and arpeggios and features much virtuosic writing. According to Cage, this was inspired by his ideas on Mozart’s music, which “strictly adheres to three different kinds of scales: the chromatic, the diatonic, and that consisting of the larger steps of thirds and fourths”. Also present is the Traditional Gamelan orchestra of Jakarta with its ancient tradition that inspired Cage to compose the cycle of his works for prepared piano, one of the great revolutions of 20th century music.

CREMONA FESTIVAL CLAUDIO MONTEVERDI 27 April-29 May Monteverdi is acclaimed as the first major figure in the history of opera, and one of the greatest of all opera composers. His hometown, Cremona, honours him with an annual three-week festival featuring a mix of his own works and the music of those he inspired and mentored. This year the festival’s 29th edition includes big names of the baroque music field such as The Tallis Scholars, cellist Enrico Dindo, the Ensemble Gallicantus and Gautier Dance company in a production dedicated to Poppea. FLORENCE FESTIVAL DEL MAGGIO MUSICALE FIORENTINO 4 May-30 June This famous arts festival offers an interesting programme of opera, ballet and classical music. Conductor and festival director Zubin Mehta inaugurates the event with a new production of Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier and as per tradition, it is followed by a new opera especially commissioned by the Maggio Musicale from a contemporary Italian composer. This year the opera is entitled La Metamorfosi and the composer is Silvia Colasanti. The work is brought to the stage by Pier’Alli who has also created the sets, costumes, lighting and video art (22-25 May). A collaboration between the Florentine festival and the Hungarian Festival Saito Kinen gives life to a double bill dedicated to Bartok. The first part is the ballet The Miraculous Mandarin with stage direction and choreography by Jo Kanamori, and then Bartok’s only opera, Bluebeard’s Castle (31 May-5 June). The chosen ballet is Verklarte Nacht a new production for the festival with choreography by Susanne Linke (17-20 May). See Dance. ROME LETTERATURE. FESTIVAL INTERNAZIONALE DI ROMA 16 May-21 June Rome’s Festival of Literature takes place every year in the magnificent setting provided by the Basilica of Massenzio in the Roman Forum.

This extremely popular initiative celebrates the written word with a host of authors who are invited to write a text inspired by the chosen theme, as well as read an excerpt selected from a published work translated into Italian. The 2012 theme is Simple/Complex, and all in all, 17 Italian and international authors, plus a handful of poets will read from their work, sometimes with the aid of professional actors, and always accompanied by live music. Some of the names that stand out this year and will probably appeal in particular to an English-speaking audience are those of Peter Cameron, Julie otsuka, Amos oz, Sophie Kinsella, Vanessa Diffenbaugh, Jeanette Winterson, Michael Connelly. A novelty this year is represented by an event dedicated to Italian contemporary poetry which sees the American poet Robert Hass on stage to host ten young Italian poets who pay tribute to Italian poets who have died in the past ten years. other novelties are represented by an online literary competition on the theme of the festival, and a tribute to Italo Calvino. TURIN INTERPLAY/12 FESTIVAL OF CONTEMPORARY DANCE 16-25 May Companies from nine European countries plus three extra EU countries make up the programme for the 12th edition of Turin’s INTERPLAY International Contemporary Dance Festival. organisers describe the festival as representing “the crossroads of the most innovative contemporary dance scene”. OPERA NOTES Attila at the Teatro dell’opera in Rome is not to be missed. It was one of Verdi’s favourite operas, as well as being much loved by the public even though it didn’t have as much success as hoped for at the premiere in Venice in 1846. It is also a favourite of Riccardo Muti who has conducted it several times since the beginning of his carrier at La Scala. Here it is in a new production by the director Pier Luigi Pizzi. Les Pêcheurs de perles by Georges Bizet – much less well known than Carmen – is on stage at Salerno opera house in mid May, followed in concert form

by Robert le diable by Giacomo Meyerbeer. It was one of the first grand operas to seduce the Paris public in 1831. The music is grandiose and sumptuous and the singing is Italian in style like Les Pêcheurs de perles. The Salerno theatre’s muscial director Daniel oren conducts both operas.

Appuntamento da non perdere al Teatro dell’opera di Roma con Attila di Giuseppe Verdi diretto da Riccardo Muti (25 maggio-5 giugno). È un’opera a soggetto patriottico, con personaggi dal forte carattere in lotta tra loro; fu tra le preferite da Verdi e tra le più popolari e amate dal pubblico, nonostante alla prima veneziana del 1846 non ottenesse il successo sperato. THREE MILE ISLAND 21-22 May Music by Andrea Molino, texts and dramaturgy by Guido Barbieri and Ignaz Vergeiner, audio visual documentation by Karl Hoffman.

Theatrical it is, but this event is really a multimedia staged concert, that premiered in Germany last March during an international meeting on the environment. The work looks back to the nuclear accident that took place in the nuclear power plant in Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania on 28 March 1997.

The research of the Austrian meteorologist Ignaz Vergeiner shows that the radioactive cloud travelled much further than the authorities admitted. The damage to people, objects and the environment was serious and irreversible. Molino’s work is based on written and video-recorded contributions by Ignaz Vergeiner, collected by Karl Hoffmann.

The “Cloud”, an interactive intermedial installation designed by a creative team of the Centre for Arts And Media in Karlsruhe and of the Department of Art & Media of the Zurich University of the Arts, reacts in real time with live performers and provides documentary style, factual information: the voice and face of Vergeiner, the testimonies of the survivors and the interviews with family members of the nuclear accident victims filmed on location.

MAGGIODANZA 17-20 May In The Four Temperaments, choreography by George Balanchine, and Verklarte Nacht, choreography by Susanne Linke. Performed in agreement with the George Balanchine Trust, The Four Temperaments were created by Balanchine for the opening programme of Ballet Society, the forerunner of New York City Ballet. It is one of his earliest experimental works, fusing classical steps with a lean and angular style. The ballet is inspired by the mediaeval belief that human beings are made up of four different humours that determine a person’s temperament. Each temperament was associated with one of the four classical elements (earth, air, water, and fire), which in turn were the basis of the four humours (black bile, blood, phlegm, and bile) that composed the body. In a healthy body, the humours were in balance. But if one became predominant it determined an individual’s temperament.

Thus a person dominated by black bile was melancholic (gloomily pensive), by blood was sanguinic (headstrong and passionate), by phlegm was phlegmatic (unemotional and passive), and by bile was choleric (bad-tempered and angry). The titles of the ballet’s four movements - “Melancholic,” “Sanguinic,” “Phlegmatic,” and “Choleric” - reflect these principles. Transfigured Night, on the music

by Schoenberg, has been especially commissioned for the company to the award-winning German dancer and choreographer Susanne Linke, who brings together both the heritage of the expressionist German dance from the between-wars period and the contemporary German dance-theatre.

BALLETTO DEL TEATRO ALLA SCALA 3-23 May In Marguerite and Armand choreography by Frederick Ashton, and Concerto DSCH choreography by Alexei Ratmansky, with Svetlana Zakharova, Roberto Bolle, Massimo Murru.

Frederick Ashton’s stylised distillation of Dumas’ La Dame aux Camelias was so tailored to the unique qualities of Fonteyn and Nureyev that it almost fell into oblivion after they ceased dancing it in 1973. The stellar partnership of Sylvie Guillem and Nicolas Le Riche revitalised the ballet 27 years later, and since then, the roles have been up for grabs for a number of dancing couples. Now it is the turn of La Scala’s superstars, Roberto Bolle and Svetlana Zakharova who is perfectly cast for the doomed heroine. And Armand’s role, which demands both physical beauty and elegance of line, is a challenge that Bolle can certainly take on as he tackles the portrait of a young man overwhelmed by contradictory emotions: ardour, rage, contempt and utter despair. Another new production for the Milanese theatre is Ratmanksy’s work Concerto DSCH on Shostakovich’s 1957 Piano Concerto No. 2. It is a hopeful and joyous work inspired by the end of the Stalin era in Russia. The high spirits of the music are captured in the lively choreography, especially in the roles of the lead dancers, one lyrical couple and a virtuoso trio of two men and one ballerina. (DSCH stands for four musical notes that form an abbreviation of the composer’s name when written in German).

ROME YASMEEN GODDER 16 May In Storm End Come, choreography by Yasmeen Godder and Itzik Giuli. This new work by the Israeli choreographer Godder and by Giuli, her partner and co-artistic director, explores movement, not for movement’s sake, but as a reflection of inner processes that leave traces on the body and the face like emotional residue. In contrast to many of Godder’s recent creations, this time the stage is bare and she uses no props such as masks, dripping paint or scissors to perpetuate dramatic moments.

Storm End Come appears to be more abstract than her more theatrical pieces that were lined with narrative, but in fact, she says, it is still expressive theatre. The work process aims to enable the dancers to find their own animalistic

CENTRE SAINT-LOUIS DE FRANCAIS 15-25 May. Le cinque perle del barocco is a short festival of ancient music performed in five special venues: Rome’s five precious pearls of French baroque architecture. They are the churches of the Trinità dei Monti, Saint Louis des Francais, St Nicholas of the Lorrains, St Ivo of the Bretons, and SS Claudius and Andrew of the Burgundians. Two extra concerts take place at the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music and at the Centre Saint-Louis itself. Each concert is performed by a top class French musician or musical ensemble specialised in the antique and baroque music repertoire. The festival also offers a master class on ancient music conducted by the founder of the Simphonie du Marais, flute and oboe player Hugo Reyne.

Concerts begin at 21.00 and are free on a first come first served basis.
