THEATRE IN ENGLISH
A
The English language theatre scene in Rome has never been so active
lthough Rome has an abundance of English theatre, there is an anomaly between the capital’s massive English-speaking community and the comparatively small number of people who could be described as theatre-goers. Given the dedication and financial difficulties involved in producing theatre, there is a spirit of support and camaraderie among the various companies – all of which try to programme their shows not to clash. Between them they offer a wide range of theatre, from Shakespearian to fringe, and some of the better-known actors tread multiple boards. Italians might remember her for rapping footballer Francesco Totti on the knuckles in the Vodafone advert, but to the capital’s expat theatre-lovers Gaby Ford is the force behind the English Theatre of Rome. Formerly known as Off Night Repertory, the company was founded by Ford in 1996 and is based at Teatro Arciliuto near Piazza Navona. Each season it covers five categories: a classic, a world premiere, a work by a woman author, an Italian premiere and bilingual events. In addition to providing a regular stream of diverse productions, this theatre is recognised for taking risks and embracing the avant-garde. A free-spirited and straight-talking New Yorker, Ford has been acting in Italy since 1985, “doing mostly cameo character roles in films and television, typecast usually as a maleducata or malvestita foreigner – whether Brit, Yank, Irish or German, I’m the girl who doesn’t get the boy.” With Loopy Ladies on 30 and 31 May, Ford’s theatre celebrates its 90th production and shows no signs of slowing down. It is participating in this year’s NY Fringe Festival and in October it presents a world premiere adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, in collaboration with Rome’s John Cabot University. In 1981 Sandra Provost formed The Rome Savoyards with a nod to London’s Savoy Theatre, home to Gilbert and Sullivan, with whom her company made its name. In recent years it has diversified into Shakespearian comedies, light comedies by Alan Bennett and Neil Simon, Restoration comedy as well as high drama. Its shows take place at Teatro S. Genesio in Prati, and from 12 to 17 June it stages its 48th production, Joe Orton’s What the Butler Saw. Provost, who has been acting and directing in Rome since 1974, says: “We’re an amateur group, yes, but we have high standards and aim for good quality.” The Rome Savoyards are planning an autumn production of The Pillowman by Irish playwright Martin McDonagh. Douglas Dean established Eternal Lines in 2009 after being approached by an actor friend, Al Mariotti, with the idea of staging a performance of Patrick Marber’s Closer. Three years on, and following its recent well-received Twelfth Night in Trastevere’s Teatro Belli, the nonprofit theatre company has six shows under its belt. A familiar face on Rome’s theatre circuit, Dean is keen to tackle another Shakespearian play and currently is torn between The Winter’s Tale, The Merchant of Venice and Macbeth. When asked about the English-speaking acting scene in Rome, Dean says “I’m completely against the idea of English theatre just being a cliquey group of Brits, Irish and Americans, performing for hand-picked audiences of their fellow Brits, Irish and Americans. It’s vital that we recognise where we are and make the effort to include non-native speakers and the skills and experiences they can bring with them to the stage.” Comprising professional English-speaking directors and actors, the Independent English Theatre was founded in 2010 by artistic director, Sandra Paternostro. Last year it staged Harold Pinter’s Betrayal in a collaborative venture with a British theatre company, and in March it presented David Hare’s Skylight, which it is considering taking to Milan and other Wanted in Rome 30 May 2012

cities. It recently produced GLBT The Show, a staged reading using contemporary references to raise awareness of gay rights. The IET is currently working with an Italian theatre company on a project for this summer at the Spoleto Theatre festival, which will premiere two short plays, one by Italian Marco Calvani and the other by American Neil LaBute. It is also working towards staging Shakespeare in English at Rome’s Globe Theatre in Villa Borghese. The Miracle Players are known for their open-air summer productions in the Roman Forum and their comic approach to antiquity. The troupe was established in 1999 by Italian-Australian actor Eric Bassanesi to provide Rome’s English-speaking tourists and residents with accessible and humorous productions of classical texts. This year the Miracle Players perform Cleopatra – written and directed by founding member Denise McNee – in front of the Mamertine prison every Friday at 19.30 from 22 June to 27 July. Arts in English was set up in 2005 by Ailleen C. Moir to showcase international dance, theatre and musical productions, often with a young cast. Moir has been producing and directing school plays in Rome for over 20 years and one of the factors in establishing Arts in English was the large number of graduating students who wished to continue in the English-language performing arts. In the bi-centenary of Charles Dickens’ birth, the company held a series of Oliver Twist-themed workshops in the spring and will be casting for Oliver, the Show at the British School in Ostia on 9 and 10 June. Amateurs and professionals can brush up their stage skills with Terriane Falcone’s Acting in English which offers performance classes for both native and non-native speakers, specialising in improvisational approaches. It recently presented a workshop for advanced actors with celebrated American improv actor Michael Gellman of Second City Chicago. Finally, fresh from its coverage in Corriere della Sera, Rome’s Comedy Club held its last show of the season on 25 May. Formed in 2009 by Stephanie Tyrell and Marsha De Salvatore, this monthly stand-up comedy night features typically six-eight performers and has begun to attract an Italian audience. With an ever-increasing supply of theatre, Rome’s English speakers are spoilt for choice. As Gaby Ford says: “The more theatres the merrier.” Andy Devane For details of all theatres mentioned see the Theatre section of What’s On on page 14. 3

DANCING AROUND ROME
The Rome Ceilidh Club organises informal open-air dancing events on the terrace of Rome's St Andrew's Church of Scotland.
American swing and traditional Scottish are among the international dance movements being taught in Rome
T
he legendary American tradition of swing dancing, which began on the streets of Harlem in the 1930s, is revived in various schools and events around Rome. Formal lessons and informal live music nights that fuse jazz melodies and lindy hop movements offer a social venue for locals and foreigners alike. The foremost dance school to have promoted the swing tradition in Rome is Swing and Soda, located near the Garbatella metro station. The cultural association offers beginner, intermediate and advanced classes in lindy hop, the earliest and most popular form of swing dancing. It incorporates steps from an earlier form of jazz dance popularised on Broadway in the 1920s, the beloved Charleston, a synthesis of jocular, fast-kicking steps. The school also provides a class in Balboa dance, a more romantic version of couple’s swing dancing involving a close embrace, as opposed to the more acrobatic lindy hop. Co-owner and dance instructor Valentina Raimondi studied the dance where it originated, in New York City, “and was electrified.” She opened a school in Rome dedicated entirely to swing that now includes six different classes and approximately 100 students who learn the foundation steps of various forms of swing dances. Several clubs around Rome such as Micca Club and Circolo degli Artisti have caught up with the excitement and have begun themed evenings centred on swing music and dancing. Bands such as Blues Willies, Four Vegas, and Red Wagons offer a musical backdrop of varying forms of jazz, big band, blues and rock & roll to practice your moves. One talented “swinger”, Luigi Cota, who attends beginner lessons at Swing and Soda, said he likes swing dancing because he loves the music and feels the rules are not as strict as in other dances. He said “I’m just a beginner, but the dance seems easier because it allows for a lot of improvisation.” The popular music of Benny Goodman and countless others of the 1930s and 1940s facilitated the development of the lindy hop. The dance started from choreographer Frankie Manning’s first “air step” in an improvised section of the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem. He impressed crowds with an aerial move that involved a back-to-back roll. The air steps, where one of the partner’s two feet leave the ground in an acrobatic style, poses probably the biggest challenge to becoming a more advanced swing dancer. Students from Swing and Soda attend social dancing events at clubs in the neighbourhoods of S. Lorenzo and Pigneto such as HulaHoop, 7cl and Assisi 33. Swing and Soda also advertises evenings at the dance studio featuring special guest dance instructors. One of the oldest dance schools in Rome, Istituto Addestramento Lavoratori dello Spettacolo (IALS) recently added swing dancing to its list of about 100 dance varieties. Instructor Claudio Santinelli leads one swing class per week that attracts about 30 students. He pointed out that the classes he teaches are rock and roll dances put to swing music, although he focuses on the boogie-woogie style popular in American during the 1950s. Wanted in Rome 30 May 2012
Meanwhile the Scottish community, and more specifically St Andrew’s Church of Scotland in Rome, is taking advantage of the spring weather and a spectacular terrace on the church’s rooftop to organise Scottish dance events. Several social clubs and specialist societies have been working with St Andrew’s church minister William McCulloch to establish dance workshops that teach various forms of traditional Scottish dancing as well as other forms of ethnic dance. McCulloch said he has been dancing traditional Scottish dances for over 30 years and he likes the events on the church terrace because “after one dance, your spirits are lifted.” In the past, the Caledonian Society of Rome organised annual Scottish dances consisting of a formal dinner banquet and ceremonial dance. Over the past three years the Rome Ceilidh Club has been offering monthly social events on the church terrace at a cost of €10 per person, creating an informal setting to learn traditional Scottish dancing. Scottish natives Andrew Marmion and Gillie Paterson founded the club to make traditional Scottish dancing events more accessible to those living in Rome. By definition, a ceilidh is a Scottish (or Irish) social gathering with folk music and dancing. At the Rome ceilidhs guests are invited to bring their own food and beverages while the hosts supply some refreshments. Marmion said that the terrace events are most definitely “a good laugh” and that many of his friends who attended just to enjoy the folk music always ended up dancing and having a great time. Dances such as the Dashing White Sergeant, a Scottish folk dance, are taught and practiced during the evening among a crowd of about 60 people. It begins with groups of six forming a circle turning anti-clockwise then clockwise, holding hands, before breaking into two sets of three where hand clapping, stomping and various steps are performed. Mary Dargie from the Caledonian Society organises events every Wednesday evening to teach Scottish country dancing, a form of social dance comprising three or more couples. Similar to traditional ceilidh dancing in its choreography, country dancing is a more formal version of the social ceilidh dance and used more often in dance competitions. The money raised by the Rome Ceilidh Club at the events is often donated to St Andrew’s parish or to charities. You need not have a kilt to attend. Just be ready to learn to dance and, as they say in Scotland, “get on the crack wi’” (start a conversation) and make new friends. Theresa Potenza

ARTURO GHERGO FOTOGRAFIE 1930-1959 3 April-8 July Those who believe that contemporary photography, being mostly digital, marks a departure from the past in the sense of a heightened artificiality, will find food for thought in this exhibition devoted to the work of photographer and painter Arturo Ghergo (1901-1959). Born in the Marches, Ghergo moved to Rome in 1929, set up his studio in Via Condotti, and came to be prized by the Roman high society for the originality and outstanding quality of his portraits, which involved stylised postures and facial expressions (Ghergo put his sitters through very long poses), elaborate lighting, and painstaking manipulation of the negative and the print. Among the women who posed for Ghergo’s plate camera were an impressive number of young debutantes of the aristocracy and wealthy bourgeoisie, as well as some of the most famous stars of Italian cinema before and after WW2. Besides their artistic merit, Ghergo’s photographs are a valuable document of aspects of Italian society, often intertwined with each other: the upper classes with their rituals (the formal photographic portrait, which marked a young

woman’s debut in society, engagement, marriage), the world of cinema and entertainment, the fashion houses (represented in his photographs are the most remarkable houses of the time) and also aspects of Italian politics, witnessed by portraits of personalities that left a mark on decades of Italian history, such as Giulio Andreotti or Pope Pius xII. Ghergo’s photographic language and the mannered poses of his models owed a lot to glamour photographers such as George HoyningenHuene, Horst P. Horst or Adolph de Meyer, but also to the high-society portraits by turn-of-the century painter Giovanni Boldini. What Bernard Berenson wrote in 1958 about Boldini could suit Ghergo equally well: ‘he interpreted very well the loftier feminine elegance, at a time when it was overly clad by the artifices of tailors and milliners, figuratively tied in ambiguous poses hovering between the salon and the theatre.’ Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Via Nazionale 194. Curated by Claudio Domini and Cristina Ghergo. Sun-Thurs 10.00-20.00, Fri-Sat 10.0022.30, Mon closed. The 2012 theme is Simple/Complex, and all in all, 17 Italian and international authors, plus a handful of poets will read from their work, sometimes with the aid of professional actors, and always accompanied by live music. Some of the names that stand out this year and will probably appeal in particular to an Englishspeaking audience are those of Peter Cameron, Julie Otsuka, Amos Oz, Sophie Kinsella, Vanessa Diffenbaugh, Jeanette Winterson, Michael Connelly. A novelty this year is represented by an event dedicated to Italian contemporary poetry which sees the American poet Robert Hass on stage to host ten young Italian poets who pay tribute to Italian poets who have died in the past ten years. Other novelties are represented by an online literary competition on the theme of the festival, and a tribute to Italo Calvino. Entry is free, but tickets must be picked up at least two hours before the event begins at a specially constructed box office in Via dei Fori Imperiali, Clivio di Venere Felice. For information www.festivaldelleletterature.it tel. 060608. UNA STRISCIA DI TERRA FECONDA 1-5 June In its 15th edition, this French-Italian festival dedicated to jazz and improvised music, offers a brief but intense programme of top quality concerts. Founded in 1998 by Paolo Damiani, musician and former director of the Orchestre National de Jazz, and Armand Meignan, president of AFIJMA and director of the Europa Jazz Festival, its aim has always been to encourage and consolidate the strong relationship and exchange that exists between jazz musicians of the two countries. In particular, the festival provides a vital stage for genres of music that do not fall under a label or fit into a pre-defined category. And throughout the years, this “strip of fertile land” has indeed become a fruitful meeting point and crossroads for French and Italian jazz musicians who are dedicated to experimentation and research. Participants include Danilo Rea and Baptiste Trotignon, Roberto Gatto and Emmanuel Bex, the Louis Sclavis Atlas Trio, the Magic Malik Duo, the Daniel Mille Quintet. FLORENCE
TUSCAN SUN FESTIVAL 11-18 June Founded in 2003 by the American businessman Barrett Wissman, owner of IMG Artists (the performing arts management corporation), by the cellist Nina Kotova and by Frances Mayes, the author of the novel “Under the Tuscan Sun”, this festival has carved a niche for itself thanks to its intense programme of events featuring prominent musicians and artists during August in the mediaeval town of Cortona in the Tuscan hills, the perfect setting for an event that wedded music and visual arts with food and wine, wellness and culture. However this year organisers have announced they are taking up a new challenge and have moved the festival to Florence in June, with the new participation of some of Tuscany’s major cultural institutions such as the Maggio Musicale, the Pergola Theatre and Palazzo Strozzi. Of course the move is all about money and the lack of an agreement between the festival management and local authorities, and the feel and the atmosphere of the festival – if not its identity – are destined to change. The programme appears to be as top-class as ever with performances and names of the calibre of John Malkovich, Nina Kotova, British violinist and viola player Nigel Kennedy, world-famous soprano Angela Gheorghiu, Croatian pianist Ivo Pogorelich, Ukranian pianist Valentina Lisitsa, Italian violinist Anna Tifu, the mezzosoprano Susan Graham, in one of her rare appearances, violinist Maxim Vengerov, and “the man with the golden flute” – Sir James Galway. As in Cortona, the Florentine edition of the festival includes events devoted to Tuscan food and wine, with a programme of exclusive lunches held at Palazzo Tornabuoni and at Four Seasons Hotel Firenze, featuring a line-up of Italy’s finest chefs. RAVENNA RAVENNA FESTIVAL 2012 16 May-15 July This top class festival celebrating its 23rd edition is longer and more articulated this year. A “pre-event” concert in April conducted by festival patron Riccardo Muti set the tone for the sophisticated event, which includes a section dedicated to young musicians entitled “Allegromosso”, a main section in June and July, and a tail-end in the autumn. “Allegromosso in May saw the participation of over 5,000 musicians aged 12 to 25 from numerous European nations in the European Youth Music Festival. The main section of the festival on the theme Nobilissima visione offers a rich calendar of opera, concerts, drama and ballet events (9 June-15 July). It builds on the millennium anniversary of the Holy Hermitage of Camaldoli, founded by St Romuald, a Benedictine monk from Ravenna. The festival invites its public to ponder upon the historical significance of western and eastern monasticism, and on its seemingly irrelevant topicality. It also offers an opportunity to tell the story of Ravenna from a different perspective. The music programme includes works that range from the Middle Ages music of the Eloqventia ensemble to the ancient Baltic songs of the Estonian Ensemble Heinavanker, from the chants of the Russian Orthodox Church by the Moscow Male Orthodox Choir to a concert by Uzbek singer Monajat Yulchieva, as well as a programme of traditional Ghazal, or Sufi mystic music. The monasticism of Tibet is also in the spotlight with a full week of meetings, rites, ceremonies and events dedicated to Tibet’s Buddhist tradition. The Opera Sancta Susanna by Hindemith evokes the solitude of cloisters, the monks’ ecstatic visions and mystical raptures and trances, and a ballet suite for orchestra, Nobilissima Visione, by Hindemith is the canvas for Micha van Hoecke’s new dance creation. Some big names to look out for include conductors Wayne Marshall, Dennis Russell Davies, Yuri Temirkanov and of course Riccardo Muti. The festival’s contemporary music section features Steve Reich (16 June) who will be present to interact with the audience and talk about his composition aesthetics. Dance fans can look forward to works by Shen Wei, Cedar Lake Contemporary Dance, Ofesh Shechter, and the French hip-hop company Kafig. There is also a section dedicated to Brazilian jazz music and an infinite number of off-shoots which, while managing to stay within the chosen theme, cater for all tastes and interests. Finally, “Waiting for Verdi” is the Autumn Trilogy that rounds up the festival activity (9-18 Nov). For booking and information Teatro Alighieri, tel. 0544249244, www.ravennafestival.org.

OPERA NOTES A new production of Luisa Miller by Verdi opens at La Scala in Milan with the successful duo Gianandrea Noseda conducting and Mario Martone directing a big-name cast of singers. In Florence Maggio Musicale stages Il castello del duca Barbablù and the ballet Il mandarino meraviglioso which have not only the constrasting melodics and harmonics of the music in common but also the themes of solitude and death. Because of illness the conductor Seiji Ozawa has been substituted by Zsolt Hamar. DANCE CHILDREN
China's Shen Wei choreographs the highly original "Near the Terrace" for the Ravenna Festival. Image Mark Murry.
RAVENNA SHEN WEI DANCE ARTS 16 June In Near the Terrace, choreography by Shen Wei; and The Rite of Spring, choreography by Shen Wei. Based in New York, the increasingly acclaimed choreographer Shen Wei spent his childhood as an apprentice at the Hunan State xian Opera Company in China and, later, dedicated himself to acquire a profound education in western painting and sculpture. His immersion into diverse art forms serves his work as a choreographer well. His 2003 Rite Of Spring is almost totally devoid of narrative, and in fact, looks nothing like any other version around. The choice of Stravinsky’s fourhand piano version (arranged by Fazil Say) dramatically changes the feel of the wellknown work leaving a rhythmically challenging score with a lyrical atmosphere. The only ritual, in this “Rite” piece for 13 dancers, is in the forming of lines, in soft, Geisha-style walking patterns, and the mannequin-like use of the arms. Near the Terrace was inspired by the work of Belgian surrealist painter Paul Delvaux. The rich lighting by David Ferri, and Arvo Part’s cascading music combine into a visual symbiosis of slowly changing imagery. With an eye on the aesthetics of Buttoh and on minimalism, Shen Wei has a masterful take, a way of doing things that is powerfully original. Palazzo Mauro de André for Ravenna Festival. WONDERS IN THE WORLD’S SEAS MUSEO DI ZOOLOGIA Until 31 July Museo di Zoologia displays the exhibition, Dai più piccoli ai più grandi, of the wonders of the seas. On display are a series of images by the famous marine photographer Alberto Muro Pelliconi, which document the marine world and the submarine life in some unexplored corners of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Visitors are taken through a breathtaking immersion into the depths of the seas to discover the extraordinary inhabitants (large and small) of the coral reefs. In these complex environments Muro Pelliconi immortalises all sorts of species: from hardly visible organisms, such as tiny seahorses swimming among corals, to enormous, wellknown marine animals, such as whale sharks. This courageous underwater photographer brings viewers some of the thrills he experienced during his underwater expeditions. In recent years, thanks to the indispensable help of marine photography, interesting discoveries have been made in the field of biological research. Sala Balena. Museo Civico di Zoologia.
