LUX IN ARCANA
This magnificent exhibition surveys the power of the papacy over 12 centuries
T
o celebrate the 400th anniversary of its foundation 100 documents from the Vatican’s Secret Archives are on display in public for the first time. In a bold move the Vatican decided that this selection of precious papers, only a fraction of the millions in its collection, should go on show in the city of Rome rather than inside the Vatican. The choice of the Campidoglio was not casual: it was after all a pope, Sixtus IV, who laid the foundation of the Capitoline Museums with his donation of the bronze SheWolf to the “people of Rome” in 1471, ordering that it and other archaeological finds be installed in the Palazzo dei Conservatori on the Capitoline Hill. The advertisement for the Lux in Arcana exhibition displays a shadowy figure between two rows of bookshelves – a rather academic image that doesn’t capture the thrill of looking at these documents for the first time, of seeing the parchment, paper and bindings, the massive official seals in gold or wax, the handwriting of so many important figures. Here there are centuries-old diplomatic documents, official decisions on religious doctrine, temporal policies on affairs of state, accounting ledgers and personal letters to the pope. There is material that relates to the early church, the Renaissance and the Reformation, the voyages of discovery, missionary activity, contacts with monarchs and leaders throughout the world. In the first two rooms (“The Guardian of Memory” and “Tiara and Crown”) we see the papacy at its most powerful. But as the exhibition continues there is a growing feeling that here is an empire in decline. Break-away Christian denominations split from the main body of the Church, scientists and philosophers challenge the faith, heretics have to be dealt with, doctrine has to be laid down. By the time one has climbed to the last rooms (in Palazzo Caffarelli) it is the weakness of the Vatican that is on display: the lists of priest and nuns interned by the Nazi regime, images of the inhabitants of Rome suffering under the Allied bombing in 1943, a photo of Pope Pius XII with his arms flung out in a gesture of despair as he greets the crowds after an Allied bombing of S. Lorenzo, the railway junction of the war-torn city. However even in these rooms, called “The Closed Period”, one gets the sensation of how far-reaching the influence of the Vatican was. A grief-stricken wife turns to the Vatican to trace her husband who has been massacred at the Fosse Ardeatine; the Jewish brother-in-law of Rosa and Edith Stein (Edith Stein converted to Catholicism from Judaism, became a Carmelite nun, died in the Auschwitz gas chambers and was beatified in 1987) turns to the Church in New York in 1945 asking for help in tracing them. A photo of the Vatican’s information office for prisoners of war shows what a hub of international information the Church was in the immediate aftermath of world war two. The exhibition ends in the confusion of that post-war world, but backtrack to the section called “Reflection and Dialogue” and there is a document that indicates the way forward for the Church. The section “Reflection and Dialogue” contains the Bull of John XXIII (dated 25 December 1961) that opened the Second Vatican Council. Naturally enough it is in the same room as the Bull opening the Council of Trent (1542). Here are the two faces of the Church; the earlier is of a messy, 21-year long council in which the leaders are searching too late to defend their faith from the Protestant menace; the later is of a short and positive period (the Second Vatican Council only lasted three years) as the Church finds ways to modernise itself and open a dialogue with the outside world. However it is above all the personal stories that shine through. There is a short letter from Michelangelo to the bishop of Cesena complaining that he hasn’t been paid for work at St Peter’s; from Lucrezia Borgia to her father Pope Alexander VI; from Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis at the time of the American Civil War. There is a document full of self-righteousness Wanted in Rome 27 June 2012
Letter from the members of the English parliament to Pope Clement VII regarding the annulment of the marriage of Henry VIII.
from Mary Stuart just before her execution by her cousin Queen Elizabeth of England; a scrap of paper from Marie Antoinette to her brother-in-law and cousin not long before she went to the guillotine. There is the bold and forceful writing of St Theresa of Avila and the timid copybook script of another saint, St Bernadette, the near illiterate French shepherd girl responsible for the miracles at Lourdes. In the section “Scientists, Philosophers and Inventors” there is a letter from Copernicus and the document that eliminated ten days from the calendar in 1582. In the room on “Heretics, Crusaders and Knights” – surely a strange combination of bedfellows – there is a summary of the trial of Giordano Bruno, “[the] impenitent, pernicious and obstinate heretic” burnt to death in Rome’s Campo de’ Fiori on 17 February 1600, as well as the Bull excommunicating that other, more dangerous heretic, Martin Luther. Strangely, the documents relating to the trial of Galileo are in another section “The Guardian of Memory” – perhaps a sign that his rehabilitation is complete at last. The section headed “In the Conclave’s Secrecy” will disappoint those who hoped to glean insights about the election of popes. Here there are documents about organisational procedures, ballot papers and the seating arrangements in the Sistine Chapel, but the real secrets of the conclave have not been revealed. If in the end there are not many real revelations in this exhibition, it is still a rare treat and certainly gives a taste of the wealth of information contained within the Vatican’s walls. Mary Wilsey “Lux in Arcana, The Vatican’s Secret Archive Revealed”, Palazzo dei Conservatori, Capitoline Museums until 9 September.

The garden design, smooth and harmonious, takes advantage of the suggestive volcanic rocks and the sea views and is enriched by fountains and water flows full of plants. SURVIVING SUMMER WITH KIDS
T
he prospect of spending summer in Rome can be ominous enough even without kids in tow. If you don’t have regular access to a country estate with northerly breezes, don’t have the financial wherewithal to spend the duration at the seaside or in the Alps, and are generally wondering what to do with your charges all day when Caput Mundi is at its hottest, the following suggestions just might help you keep your cool and get through the long slog before school starts again in September. General recommendations Go early: If you plan on taking in any outdoor tourist sites, complete your outing before it gets unbearably hot (before 11.30). Embrace the siesta: Avoid the heat at its wilting worst (between 11.3016.30) by following your leisurely lunch with a long nap. Then stay up late by taking a passeggiata through the centre. In case of emergency: Stop frequently at gelaterie for a refreshing treat – the promise of a cono piccolo can get you through most trying moments with your flagging bambini. If the heat becomes overwhelming and you are out of range of frozen incentives, take refuge in one of Rome’s more than 900 churches to cool off. Suggestions for maintaining sanity outdoors • Stop frequently at Rome’s many nasoni drinking fountains and apply liberally. • Take water pistols (however, be sure to instruct the kids to resist the temptation to refill with holy water at any aforementioned chiese). • Get a €10 inflatable pool at a corner store and set up in your cortile to create an after-lunch diversion.
Some sites/activities popular with kids • Vittorio Emanuele monument – ride the elevator to the top for a superlative view. • Castel S. Angelo – Hadrian’s tomb-cum-papal fortification replete with historic relics and armaments and offering a restorative café and another stupendous panorama. • Catacombs – naturally air-conditioned (remember to take sweaters, even in summer) and spooky, plus literal historical immersion. • S. Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini – more bone-chilling fun for the whole family. • Cat sanctuary at Largo Argentina – a perfect pilgrimage for felinophiles. Open every day from 12.00-18.00 with gift shop proceeds benefitting rescue/adoption efforts. • Pantheon – one of the world’s oldest and most awe-inspiring buildings, it rarely fails to impress even the most sullen of teens. A good ten degrees cooler inside and surrounded by some of the city’s most prized artisanal gelaterie. • Laboratori dei Musei – most major museums offer a didactic component aimed at school-aged children (e.g. Chiostro Bramante, Scuderie del Quirinale, MAXXI, Musei di Villa Torlonia). • Subterranean excursions – in addition to exploring Rome’s many catacombs and church crypts to stay cool, the group Sotterranei di Roma offers underground outings to sites normally closed to the public. Indoor options Heat-averse cognoscenti seek the solace of air-conditioned museums, book stores, libraries and matinees. My kid-friendly favourites include the Explora Kids museum (with full bar for genitori and a great restaurant on site); Centrale Montemartini for impressive machinery and sculptures; Wanted in Rome 27 June 2012
The author's children having fun in Piazza S. Maria in Trastevere.
Museo Civico di Zoologica; Musei della Civiltà Romana and aquarium out by EUR; 3D Rewind Rome (cheesy, but adequately educational). Best outdoor targets Parks – After tiring of the local playground, head to one of Rome’s larger urban refuges for fun in the shade, such as Villa Pamphilj (with a popular bistro serving organic lunches, dinners and snacks), Villa Borghese, Villa Sciarra, Villa Ada, Parco Appia Antica and the Bioparco zoo. Swimming pools – check out local clubs and recreation facilities for open swim hours and hotels with pools for their non-guest day rates. Outside the city* Beaches — Take the trenino from Ostiense station to access Ostia’s beaches or the intercity line from Termini or Trastevere to head up the coast to S. Marinella. Historic sites — Hadrian’s Villa and the impressively refreshing waterworks of Villa d’Este in Tivoli and the cool Etruscan necropoli at Cerveteri are both accessible by train/bus. Further afield — For those with access to a car, consider a day trip. There’s Sperlonga with its beautiful beaches, the wonderfully strange Giardini dei Tarocchi near Capalbio, the Bomarzo “monster park” east of Viterbo and the Treja Adventure ropes course immersed in a nature reserve off the Via Cassia. *I’m theme park-averse, but if you are made of stronger stuff, by all means consider a day at Rainbow MagicLand, ZooMarine or Hydromania. Summer camps Why not let someone else take on the responsibility of keeping your kids safe, stimulated, clean, fed, entertained, exercised and cool from 08.3017.00? There are a wide variety of camps emphasising sports from swimming to horse riding and others focused on theatre and linguistic immersion. Most seem to accept both daily and weekly signups.

RENZO VESPIGNANI 29 June-18 Nov A selection of paintings, drawings, illustrations and prints together with documents and photographs pay tribute to Renzo Vespignani ten years from his death. He collaborated as a designer with many political-literary reviews done as poetic documentaries. After the war Vespignani contributed illustrations to political and literary journals, and his works were introduced to the US in 1948. He was one of the co-founders of the review Città Aperta and focused his work on life in the difficult areas of Rome’s periphery. In the 1960s he was part of the group Il pro e il contro which immediately became a point of reference for the art world of the time. A tireless illustrator, Vespignani illustrated the works of Boccaccio, Kafka and T.S. Eliot among others. He held many exhibitions and participated in the Venice Biennale four times. MUSIC JAPANESE MUSIC FEST 11-13 July Introducing the festival, a programme note explains that first the mechatronic revolution and then the digital one have made Japan one of the nations with the highest level of technological innovation in the world. It explains that this productive and cultural force has deeply modified the social and economic fabric of the nation, with radical transformations that have never ignored the most ancestral and archaic traditions of Japanese culture. On one hand the celebration of a remote historical memory and on the other extreme experimentation have given life to what is seen in the West as a continuous interweaving of “classical” and “modern”, and a magical equilibrium. This festival, organised in conjunction with the Japan Foundation, aims to explore those spaces in which tradition and innovation come together to give life to a universal language that goes beyond cultural limitations. Rome’s MACRO (Museum of Contemporary Art in Rome) has converted one part of a former slaughterhouse in Testaccio into a multispace venue for visual and performed arts. This complex, better known as MACRO Testaccio, (or MACRO Futuro), is divided into the A and B Pavilions, which host exhibitions, workshops, performances and other events exclusively dedicated to contemporary art. MACRO Testaccio was recently extended to the so-called La Pelanda, a nearby area, which hosts private events, concerts and exhibitions, including the Movie Festival Asiatica, a Short Theatre Review and an Affordable Art Fair. The idea was to turn the whole compound into a cultural complex and parts of it were beautifully converted from the old animal stockyards into exhibition spaces. But what got off to a good start now looks as though it has run out of steam and the grounds are beginning to look neglected. Piazza Orazio Giustiniani 4, tel. 06671070400. BEETHOVEN FEST 4-19 July The Italian title of this mini festival dedicated to the German composer is “Incomparable Beethoven” and it is brought to Rome by S. Cecilia and its excellent orchestra, conducted for the occasion by Carlo Rizzari. The all symphonic programme includes Beethoven’s Symphonies I, III, V, VII and Ix. Rizzari is really an in-house talent as he has been Antonio Pappano’s musical assistant at S. Cecilia since 2006. The Sicilian conductor is actively engaged in promoting the culture of music, and in cooperation with the academy’s educational department, Rizzari has become a well-known name in Rome for his lessons and concerts specifically targeted at children and families. He is guest conductor for many major orchestras, regularly does recordings, and is involved in international music projects. In 2009 at very short notice, Rizzari jumped in as a replacement for Michael Tilson Thomas conducting Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with great success. FESTIVALS RAVENNA
RAVENNA FESTIVAL 2012 16 May-15 July This top class festival celebrating its 23rd edition is longer and more articulated this year. The main section of the festival on the theme Nobilissima visione offers a rich calendar of opera, concerts, drama and ballet events (9 June-15 July). It builds on the millennium anniversary of the Holy Hermitage of Camaldoli, founded by St Romuald, a Benedictine monk from Ravenna. The festival invites its public to ponder upon the historical significance of western and eastern monasticism, and on its seemingly irrelevant topicality. It also offers an opportunity to tell the story of Ravenna from a different perspective. The music programme includes works that range from the Middle Ages music of the Eloqventia ensemble to the ancient Baltic songs of the Estonian Ensemble Heinavanker, from the chants of the Russian Orthodox Church by the Moscow Male Orthodox Choir to a concert by Uzbek singer Monajat Yulchieva, as well as a programme of traditional Ghazal, or Sufi mystic music. The monasticism of Tibet is also in the spotlight with a full week of meetings, rites, ceremonies and events dedicated to Tibet’s Buddhist tradition. The Opera Sancta Susanna by Hindemith evokes the solitude of cloisters, the monks’ ecstatic visions and mystical raptures and trances, and a ballet suite for orchestra, Nobilissima Visione, by Hindemith is the canvas for Micha van Hoecke’s new dance creation. There is also a section dedicated to Brazilian jazz music and an infinite number of off-shoots which, while managing to stay within the chosen theme, cater for all tastes and interests. Finally, “Waiting for Verdi” is the Autumn Trilogy that rounds up the festival activity (9-18 Nov).

Two extra events are represented by ballet super star Roberto Bolle on stage with other soloists for a gala evening (20 July), and popular Roman actor and comedian Gigi Proietti in a one-man show (16, 30 July). ROCK IN ROMA 2012 7 June-2 Aug Rome has never really been an attractive city for rock concerts and rock stars. However, as summer offerings dwindle year after year due to financial cuts this little festival, which initially shared a space with a sprawling Latino festival that is no more, has grown. Not only has the number of concerts increased, but its flavour has become more international. This year the festival brings a line-up of big names on the rock music scene such as Portishead, Snoop Dog, The Cure, Ray Manzarek and Robby Krieger of The Doors, Lenny Kravitz, Kasabian, Goran Bregovic, Ben Harper, The Beach Boys, Simple Minds and many more. INVITO ALLA DANZA 2012 3-31 July Rome’s annual summer appointment with dance as usual provides a varied and wide-ranging programme. John Neumeier’s Hamburg Ballet opens the dances with a Gala evening featuring soloists of the company (3 July). Then the Compania FlaemenQueVive pays tribute to Picasso with a work entitled Pinturas (5 July). The excellent all-male Les Ballets de Trockadero from Monte Carlo do their usual take on the classics (6 July), the Aterballetto Company performs its recent Alice in Wonderland (10 July), and the Marinsky Ballet from St Petersburg stages Swan Lake starring Anastasia Kolegova and Eugenj Ivanchenko (11, 12 July). The Romulo Larrea Tango Ensemble from Argentina bring their Spotlight on Tango (17, 18 July), the Junior

SERMONETA FESTIVAL PONTINO DI MUSICA 23 June-28 July In 1963 Lelia Caetani and her husband Hubert Howard founded a chamber music festival in the Castle of Sermoneta in memory of the musician Roffredo Caetani. They invited young musicians from across the globe to come and participate in a series of workshops and master classes and in the festival itself. Provincial authorities soon acknowledged the importance of the initiative, and took on the responsibility of administrating and organising the increasingly prestigious event. In 1972, the Campus Internazionale di Musica stepped in to become the main promoter of the festival, transforming it into one of the most exciting music realities of the territory. The Castel di Sermoneta remains at the heart of the festival, but nearby historic venues in Fondi, Lenola and Sperlonga are also involved. Over the years the festival has seen the participation of many big names in the music panorama, and it was presided over by composer Goffredo Petrassi until his death in 2003. The initiative represents an important occasion of encounter and exchange for musicians and music scholars. For information Campus Internazionale di Musica, tel. 0773605551, www.campusmusica.it.

SPOLETO SPOLETO FESTIVAL 29 June-15 July This famous arts festival in the beautiful Umbrian town of Spoleto promises to deliver the goods with a rich programme of opera, music, drama, dance and art. Continuing under the direction of Giorgio Ferrara who took over from the Menotti family after the death of festival founder, the composer Gian Carlo Menotti, there is a strong accent on contemporary realities, and this is underscored by the choice of Benjamin Britten’s opera The Turn of the Screw directed by Ferrara himself, and Frank Wedekind’s Lulu, directed by Robert Wilson with music and songs by Lou Reed. Legendary dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov tries his hand at acting in the lead role of In Paris based on a story by Ivan Bunin, and brought to the stage by Dmitry Krimov, the acclaimed avant garde Russian theatre director. For dance fans, there is a choice of three top class companies: the Wiener Staatballett, the Pacific Northwest Ballet and the Semeroper Ballett Dresda. As usual many concerts, both symphonic and

DANCE RAVENNA
CEDAR LAKE CONTEMPORARY BALLET 30 June In Violet Kid, Ten Duets on a Theme of Rescue and Hubbub, choreography by Hofesh Shechter, Crystal Pite, Alexander Ekman. The company was founded in 2003 by the Walmart heiress Nancy Laurie. Nearly 10 years later, the 16-member group has become a New York success story, and possibly the country’s most innovative contemporary dance reality with a superb repertoire and more than a whim for creation. The triple bill chosen for the occasion exhibits three distinct and thoroughly developed forms of dance theatre, and the lighting by Jim French is remarkable in its own right. Palazzo Mauro de André, tel. 0544249211 www.ravennafestival.org. KAFIG BRASIL 4 July In Creation for 11 dancers. This company was founded over 15 years ago by the FrenchKabyle choreographer Mourad Merzouki, the man credited with giving artistic dignity to hiphop. It showcases the fantastic hip-hoppers from the French banlieues and a fabulous crew of dancers recruited in Brazilian favelas. These performers who starred in Merzouki’s hit creations Correria and Agwa now feature in Kafig Brasil, created in Rio de Janeiro in conjunction with other choreographers, who contributed pieces of 15 minutes each, leaving the last one to the improvisation of the dancers. ROME BALLETTO DEL TEATRO DELL’OPERA 30 June-10 July In Giselle, choreography by Patrice Bart. The performance chosen to open the summer season in the magnificent setting provided by the Baths of Caracalla is the ballet Giselle, staring one of the great ballerinas of our times: Svetlana Zhakarova. Considered one of the great Romantic ballets, Giselle was first performed in Paris in 1841. Originally choreographed by Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot, the modern productions we see today are based on the choreography by Marius Petipa for the Imperial Ballet. Giselle is one of the real showpieces of classical ballet: steeped in history, aesthetically beautiful, and full of demanding dancing. Make sure Zhakarova is dancing when you buy your tickets as casts rotate. Terme di Caracalla. For booking and information tel. 064817003, www.operaroma.it.

WIENER STAATSBALLETT 1 July In Glow-Stop and Marie Antoniette, choreography by Jorma. Elo and Patrick de Bana. Since the former Paris Opera Ballet star Manuel Legris took the helm last year, the Austrian company has steadily become more adventurous and Patrick de Bana’s Marie-Antoinette, one of the many premieres Legris scheduled in his first season, is an ambitious effort: a new, two-act narrative ballet taking the fabled queen from her native Vienna to the guillotine. The score is a collage of baroque music and electronic transitions, and de Bana makes use of robot-like choreography for the presumably unpleasant French court. Glow-
Stop by Finnish choreographer Jorma Elo is a moody work with a rather chaotic start that eventually comes together in the pairs’ performances and its plays with shadows. Teatro Romano. For booking and information tel. 0743776444, www.festivaldispoleto.com. PACIFIC NORTHWEST BALLET 6-8 July In Twyla Tharp, choreography by Tharp. The excellent ballet company pays tribute to legendary contemporary choreographer Twyla Tharp performing three of her works, representing the range of her imagination. Opus 111 was created by Tharp for PNB in 2008. It is the sort of deceptively gentle work that gets more complex with each viewing, filled with unexpectedly flexed feet, off-centre turns, coiling arms, jumps with one leg landing while the other seems still in flight. It is set to a series of Brahms string quintets. Its 12 dancers come and go in varying groups, at one point dancing meditatively in a loose line, side by side but moving alone. Waterbaby Bagatelles, which premiered in 1994, is a glorious symphony of wiggles and swoops, set to a variety of recorded music and performed by a fleet of bobbling dancers in aqua-hued swimwear. Nine Sinatra Songs is a popular and entertaining modern dance classic, created by Tharp almost 30 years ago for her then-existing Twyla Tharp Dance Company. It’s a lovely sequence of intimate duets, featuring scenic designs by Jennifer Tipton, gorgeous ball gowns for the ballerinas and sharp tuxedoes for the men by Oscar de la Renta, and of course, the heartrendering Sinatra songs as the soundtrack. Teatro Romano. For booking and information tel. 0743776444, www.festivaldispoleto.com.

OPERA
THEATRE ROME
OPERA NOTES The Rome Opera’s summer season at the Baths of Caracalla has an unusual choice of works this year. Prokofiev’s Alexander Nevsky – written for the film of the same name by Sergei Eisenstein – is conducted by Yuri Temirkanov, a Russian music specialist, and staged by Pier Allì. No less unusual is Il combattimento di Clorinda e Tancredi, the madrigal by Monteverdi inspired by Torquato Tasso, which is directed by Mario Martone along the lines of the original version first performed at the Venice Carneval in 1624. The two operas this year are Bellini’s Norma and the Pier Luigi Pizzi’s version of Verdi’s Attila performed a month ago at the Rome opera house. Alquanto desueto è anche Il combattimento di Clorinda e Tancredi (10–15 It's that time of the year for open air opera at the Baths of Caracalla. luglio), il madrigale che Claudio Monteverdi compose ispirandosi a La Gerusalemme Liberata di Torquato Tasso. Paolo Di Nicola

IN PARIS A play 30 June-1 July Based on the story by Ivan Bunin, directed by Dmitry Krymov, with Mikhail Baryshnikov and Anna Sinyankina. For those of you who are familiar with the charismatic and virile image of star dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov, his portrait on the poster of this new acting venture is shocking. He looks aged, vulnerable and frail. Described as a groundbreaking new play based on a Russian short story by Nobel Prize-winner Ivan Bunin, set in 1930, In Paris tells the brief, tragic love story of two lonely Russian immigrants, an ex-general of the old imperial army and a beautiful, much younger woman whom he meets at the Russian restaurant where she works as a waitress. Staged by Dmitry Krymov, a set designer and painter who started an experimental theatre in Moscow in 2005, the play uses music, song, mime, video and postersize images of old Paris postcards to create a sombre world in black and white. Performed in Russian with Italian subtitles. Teatro San Nicolò. For booking and information tel. 0743776444, www.festivaldispoleto.com.
