PONTIFICAL IRISH COLLEGE AT A CROSSROADS
I
A critical report about the Irish College leaves Ireland’s famous seminary in Rome facing difficult times ahead
t was during the preparation for the millennium celebrations of 2000 that the Pontifical Irish College got into its stride as a warm, outward-looking point of reference in Rome for people celebrating two millennia of Christianity. Until then it had seemed rather austere, set back behind formidable gates on the road that runs down one side of S. Giovanni hospital. It was a highly regarded place for Irish seminarians, young men training for the priesthood, whose main purpose was to get through their formation and rigorous academic training at Rome’s pontifical universities. But there wasn’t a great deal of time in its brief for people who lived outside the gates. With the arrival of John Fleming (now Bishop of Killala, County Mayo) as rector in 1994, things began to change. In the two years before the opening of the new millennium his was the guiding hand behind a happy and hard-working committee that prepared the way for pilgrims to the Eternal City. Its work included the renovation of the Irish chapel in St Peter’s basilica, a pilgrim centre at the Irish College itself, and a useful guidebook that covered some of the common – and less common – aspects of the city. Everyone, Irish or not, was given a welcome. From then on the activities of the Irish College went from strength to strength. Under the guidance of the next rector, Liam Bergin, and his vice rector, Albert McDonnell, the college became a meeting place for religious and lay people, for academics and students, politicians and diplomats, for all nationalities and major religions. A series of historical lectures engaged some of the best academic minds on subjects relating to Ireland, the Catholic Church in Ireland, the country’s historical and diplomatic relations with the Holy See. Interfaith conferences, attended also by top Jewish and Muslim theologians, were no less illuminating. There were concerts, plays and art exhibitions. An archivist was taken on and the art collection restored. A remodernisation project improved the buildings and their surrounding grounds and also saw the renovation of the previously rather oldfashioned chapel and the conversion of a former convent building into a guesthouse, Villa Irlanda, for visitors to Rome. There were special liturgies to coincide with the important seasons of the Church calendar, weddings and the sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation for children of Irish/English-speaking/Italian parents. And all the time the formation of future and newly-ordained priests continued. Vocations from Ireland might have fallen off but priests from other continents, as well as some from Italy, were given accommodation during their studies in Rome. One of the most tragic was Ragheed Aziz Ganni, a Chaldean Catholic priest from Iraq who was murdered in 2007 in his home-

town of Mosul after celebrating Mass in his parish. Ganni, whose mosaic now adorns the renovated chapel, lived at the Irish College from 1996-2003 while studying at the Angelicum University before going back to his war-torn country. Famous politicians were invited to stay and to lecture. Mary McAleese, the Irish president, was a frequent visitor, but more surprising was the stay of British prime minister Tony Blair when he visited Pope John Paul II in February 2003, a meeting that included talks on Iraq just weeks before the March invasion. During the first decade of the 21st century fundraising increased, helped in part by the economic boom in Ireland, and the drop in student numbers was arrested. There are currently 60 students living at the College, half of whom are from Ireland. Now, after several decades of extremely prolific outward-looking activity, three of the top figures at the College, the vice rector Albert McDonnell, the director of formation Billy Swan and the spiritual director Chris Hayden, have been recalled to Ireland. In lay terms this is the equivalent of three key members of a management team being moved to other jobs, leaving only a relatively new and inexperienced chief executive office (the rector) to carry on. The formal news of the almost immediate departures was given in May by the new rector of the College, Ciarán O’Carroll, who only arrived in Rome from a Dublin parish last autumn with no previous experience of this kind of job. The announcement sent shockwaves through the friends of the College, both in Ireland and Rome. It left those who had benefited from its record of academic, cultural, spiritual and ecumenical leadership wondering what had happened – and what would happen next. A few weeks later an article appeared in the Irish Times stating that the findings of a report by the Archbishop of New York, Cardinal Timothy Dolan, were highly critical of the College. Commissioned by the Vatican as part of its investigation into the Irish Church in the wake of the child abuse scandals, the leaks in the Irish Times said that the Dolan report had found fault with students, staff and trustees (Ireland’s four archbishops). Students were accused of being sloppily dressed, staff for not supervising students enough, and the trustees for being disengaged from College governance. The report also included allegations that the College had a reputation for being “gay-friendly”, although it also acknowledged that there was no evidence of a homosexual subculture or immorality among students. These were all allegations that those who had frequented the College over the years found difficult to comprehend. In return, the four Irish trustees of the College have blasted the Dolan report as being coloured by “deep prejudice”, as hostile in tone and page 19 3

DRAWING ON WALLS
An exciting initiative encourages artists to leave their mark on the walls of the Swiss Institute of Rome
W
hile the capital’s modern galleries strive to retain their cutting-edge credentials, the Swiss Institute of Rome offers a liberating alternative to artists and non-artists alike. The Draftsmen’s Congress invites participants to use pencils, paint and ink to respond freely to topical issues such as politics, religion and the economic crisis. However, instead of being prompted to express themselves within the confines of a canvas or commenting neatly in a visitor’s book, the public can decorate the building’s white-washed walls and polythene-covered floors. The Congresso dei disegnatori takes place in parallel with the recentlyfinished seventh Berlin Biennale, curated by Poland’s Artur Żmijewski, an acclaimed artist who is particularly interested in the power of art and its relationship to politics. Amid declining state support for the arts in European countries such as Britain, the Netherlands and Italy, Żmijewski transformed the biennale into a political platform in which the public could explore and comment on the effects of art in society. Drawing on his social activist roots, Żmijewski set about creating a “Solidarity Action” involving a network of like-minded art institutions across Europe. In addition to the Swiss Institute in Rome, the other participating bodies are in Poland, Germany, Sweden and at the ESC Atelier Autogestito in Rome’s S. Lorenzo district. The project’s launch at the Swiss Institute on 4 June was overseen by Paweł Althamer, another leading Polish artist who kick-started the initiative in Berlin’s deconsecrated St Elisabeth Church. The Draftsmen’s Congress allows people to enter into a visual dialogue in which images are just as powerful as words and artists are given free rein to draw whatever they wish. On arrival, visitors and curious passersby are provided with black markers or charcoal and encouraged to go wild. The walls of the institute are plastered with social commentary, mostly of a political and religious kind. There is a mixture of the serious, the silly and the surreal. One sign says When a platypus loves a flamingo it’s forever while nearby a large seagull implores us not to believe what we see. All around there is an eclectic mix of cartoons, Vikings, rock stars, even flying elephants. Handprints replace footprints on the stairwell. Most of the writing is in English but some of the Italian messages range from the philosophical – L’arte contemporanea non esiste and C’é troppa storia in questa città – to the joyous – Champagna! and Viva la libertà! Collaborating with the institute for the duration of the show is Sicilian artist Orazio Battaglia, who exhibited at the Casa delle Letterature over Christmas alongside the late Edith Schloss. The softly-spoken Battaglia evidently revels in helping the project grow and estimates that up to 400 people left their mark on the opening night, among them about 100 Italian, Swiss and international professional visual artists. Since then there has been a steady stream of visitors from Rome and all over the world, and Battaglia has watched the walls come to life. “Today a group of 30 children aged six to 16 left clear traces of their visit,” he said, “and tomorrow they are coming back to draw some more.” Although the venture began in monotone, colours have begun appearing around the building’s inner courtyard and vast downstairs exhibition space. Indeed, part of the project’s appeal is seeing the drawings metamorphose with the inventive interjections of a succession of artists. One of Wanted in Rome 11 July 2012

these was American Christine Finley, who is based in Rome and whose Colpo d’Occhio exhibition just finished at the FDA gallery in the city centre. At the institute she enlivened an already-painted silhouette of a man’s body using her trademark geometric designs. She told Wanted in Rome: “It was inspiring to walk into a giant community drawing; this show is a perfect example of free art. I love to participate with tons of other people, it is so creative and uplifting to see how talented everybody can be when provided with an open forum.” Another Rome-based artist, Michelle Rogers, agrees: “It was exciting to see all the different ways that people responded – a really unique and unifying experience.” In the past the Irish artist’s human rights-themed paintings have won her commissions from Amnesty International, and much of her work celebrates women. Using pastels, Rogers drew a large portrait of a female pope inspired by her fondness for the mediaeval legend of Pope Joan. The artist dedicated her pastel Papessa to the recent Rome visit by America’s Leadership Conference of Women Religious (LCWR), which the Vatican charged with promoting “radical feminist themes incompatible with the Catholic faith.” Meanwhile over in S. Lorenzo the project at the ESC has a freer, more underground feel to it, in keeping with the surrounding bohemian district. The independent, artist-run collective has been occupied since 2004 and organises regular events to promote social justice. In contrast to the Swiss Institute’s salubrious address in the environs of Via Veneto, the ESC sits at the quiet, ramshackle end of the funky Via dei Volsci, near the occupied Cinema Palazzo. Although it embraces the same manifesto as the Swiss Institute – and evidently has a few artists in common – the atmosphere is somewhat different. Inside, a mixture of young Italian and foreign artists toast a successful afternoon’s work with plastic cups of beer while they help each other translate the more provocative and humorous messages on the walls. In both establishments there is a warm welcome extended to anyone keen to add their contribution. The initiative ends on 20 July, when the Swiss Institute closes for the summer. Its walls will return to their original white but the exhibition will live on in photos, film and a future publication. Whether professional or amateur and whatever your politics, there is still time to leave your mark in a project whose only limit is the height of the ceiling. Andy Devane Until 20 July, the Draftsmen’s Congress includes a series of parallel workshops, discussions and concerts, www.solidarityaction.istitutosvizzero.it. 5

The gardens were created in 1958 by Susana Walton, the wife of the famous English composer Sir William Walton. La Mortella is divided into two areas: the valley one and the hill one. The valley, designed by Russell Page, is shady, luxuriant and tropical whilst the hill, designed by Lady Walton, is sunny and Mediterranean. The garden design, smooth and harmonious, takes advantage of the suggestive volcanic rocks and the sea views and is enriched by fountains and water flows full of plants. La Mortella is administered by the Foundation William Walton, that opens the gardens to the public and organises concerts of classical music in the Greek Theatre, overlooking the sea. ITALY'S NEGLECTED MONUMENTS Sustainable management is needed for Italy's smaller sites
N
estling in the hills 10km north of Viterbo in northern Lazio there is a largely forgotten but nonetheless impressive Roman theatre: the theatre of Ferento. Built to hold 1,200 spectators, it is small in comparison to some of Lazio’s other Roman theatres such as the one at Ostia Antica (which was able to accommodate about 6,000 toga-clad theatre-goers) or the Theatre of Marcellus in Rome (about 11,000 seats). But with its 26 arches framing the skyline and a backdrop of rolling green countryside, the Roman theatre of Ferento has its own charm. In the first centuries of imperial Rome it was the hub of entertainment in Ferentum, a small town with Etruscan origins. Not that you could tell these days; it’s accessible along a small country road and the site is halfabandoned and overgrown. It hasn’t been opened to the public on a daily basis for many years – when the last custodian retired several years ago, he wasn’t replaced. The only times the public can visit now is during Italy’s Culture Week in April, and during a festival that takes place in the theatre for a few days each summer. Otherwise, the grass is allowed to grow in the cracks and debris accumulates from one season to the next. The state of Ferento’s theatre has even caught the attention of the popular investigative television show Striscia la Notizia, which highlighted the site’s neglect in a programme broadcast in March. Presenters Fabio and Mingo visited Ferento and found that the archaeological site was in “a really ruinous state.” Mingo joked: “The ancient Romans would have put on plays here: comedies, tragedies; the tragedy we see today is the state of this archaeological site. The only spectators today are the weeds and dead branches that have invaded the place.” The programme caused a local stir, with Viterbo’s deputy mayor Enrico Maria Contardo explaining that the maintenance of Ferento is not the responsibility of the municipal authority, but is overseen by the archaeological superintendency for Etruria Meridionale, the body charged with protecting Italy’s southern Etruscan heritage. However, as a result of the programme deputy mayor Contardo pledged to ensure that a plan is put in place to conserve and protect Ferento. And yet this state of semi-abandon is not unusual for Italy’s smaller sites and monuments. Of the 400 archaeological sites, monuments and museums owned by the state and managed by the ministry of heritage and cultural activities in 2009, the 49 biggest sites attracted 85 per cent of the visitors, leaving the vast majority of the smaller state-owned sites with just 15 per cent of the visitors. Funding for cultural heritage has been cut and sites such as Pompeii and the Colosseum have their own well-publicised funding problems, but for small sites and monuments, the financial situation is even bleaker. “In Italy the problem is management,” says professor Luigi Manfra, a specialist in economic and environmental projects at Unimed University in Rome. “It’s not so much a problem for the big monuments, which are Wanted in Rome 11 July 2012
part of Italy’s image abroad, but it is a serious situation for the numerous smaller monuments, many of which are abandoned.” Manfra has studied the site of Ferento from a socio-economic point of view, part of a multi-disciplinary project to identify means of sustainable financing for the site, part of a wider project that considered several other Roman theatres in Italy as well as the Roman theatre at Bulla Regia in Tunisia. Unimed was also asked to evaluate the management of the theatre at Ferento. “The question we wanted to explore was how we can reduce the cost of these smaller monuments to the public budget. One of the conclusions we came to is that management needs to be improved,” says Manfra. “We analysed the site from a socio-economic point of view, in the context of the Viterbo region,” he continues, explaining that the local culture and heritage form an inter-related economy that involves tourism, gastronomy, handicrafts and art, as well as many other sectors – and each sector influences the others. The study took inspiration from archaeological sites in other countries, one of which is the archaeological park of Pont du Gard, in southern France. This is one of France’s top five tourist attractions and a prime example of Roman engineering. The management of Pont du Gard in recent years has also been exemplary, and shows how efficient and sustainable management could also benefit smaller sites such as Ferento in Italy. Once overrun with road traffic, illegally-built structures and tourist shops, a plan was put in place in 1996 to pedestrianise the Pont du Gard site, build a museum, auditoriums, bookshop and restaurant, while creative itineraries were introduced (the bridge can be explored on foot, by bicycle or by canoe). Three of the perceived success factors were collaboration with scientific institutions and local organisations, the ability to attract different types of visitors (including school groups, wedding receptions and business meetings), as well as involvement with local cultural and gastronomic events. It is hoped that the authorities in charge of Ferento can gain something from the success of a site like Pont du Gard. The University of Viterbo is already using the site for didactic purposes and it is hoped this collaboration will continue and develop. The theatre also hosts a series of concerts each summer. This season’s concerts run from 14 July to 4 August and include performances by Arisa (runner-up in the San Remo music festival this year) and the Young Russian Ballet. After the war Vespignani contributed illustrations to political and literary journals, and his works were introduced to the US in 1948. He was one of the co-founders of the review Città Aperta and focused his work on life in the difficult areas of Rome’s periphery. In the 1960s he was part of the group Il pro e il contro which immediately became a point of reference for the art world of the time. KEITH JARRET, GARY PEACOCK & JACK DEJOHNETTE 29 July Universally acclaimed as the planet’s preeminent piano trio, these three jazz superstars have been touring together for almost 30 years. Trio leader Keith Jarrett who is known also for his temperamental disposition and stormy exchanges with his adoring public, is undoubtedly one of the most dazzling solo piano improvisers in jazz history. A child prodigy, he began playing piano at the age of three and had played a recital by the time he was seven. He studied at Berklee, moved to new York and shot to fame. In over 40 years he has performed with the Charles Lloyd Quartet and played and travelled the world with them until 1969, when he played electric keyboards and organ, along with Chick Corea with Miles Davis’ fusion group. He later swore off electric instruments and alienated many in the fusion genre by declaring electric instruments “a crutch”. He formed a group with Dewey Redman, Charlie Haydn, and Paul Motion. They recorded over a dozen albums and played everything from hard bop to free jazz. In the

mid 1970s, he recorded a series of live solo piano concerts. They include Solo Concerts, the mammoth Sun Bear Concerts, and the hugely successful Koln Concert, which sold
over a million copies. In these concerts, he would sit down without any idea of what he would play, and start improvising. Sometimes, two songs would make up an entire concert. At
the Koln Concert the correct piano was not available, so he made do with one that was poorly tuned: the top end was shot and the bass lacked resonance, so he was restricted to the middle keys. He ended up improvising four songs on the middle keys: the result is unbelieveably beautiful music. By the 1980s, he had recorded much classical music, in particular his critically acclaimed interpretations of Bach. The trio with which he is currently touring and with whom he performs mostly jazz standards and improvisation was formed in the 1983 at the suggestion of ECM head Manfred Eicher. Personally, I prefer Jarrett solo, but if you have never had the chance to listen to him live, don’t miss this one. Auditorium Parco della Musica, Viale P. de Coubertin. FESTIVALS MACERATA MACERATA OPERA 20 July-14 Aug The city’s unique “Sferisterio”, a long, ovalshaped arena that was originally built as a playground for the 18th-century game of the ball and the bangle, is where the operas are staged. The very peculiar shape of the building provides a challenging setting for stage directors who have turned it into a temple for opera with some really legendary productions. The programme this year includes Traviata by Verdi, Puccini’s Boheme and Carmen by Bizet. This edition is dedicated to the great set designer Josef Svoboda 20 years after the creation of his wonderful Traviata of Mirrors for this very venue, and ten years after his death. And it is exactly that wonderful Traviata directed by Henning Brockhaus with sets by Svoboda that is back on stage featuring Greek soprano Mirtò Papatanasiu in the role of Violetta Valéry (29 July-12 Aug). For booking and information tel. 0733230735, www.sferisterio.it.
MARTINA FRANCA FESTIVAL DELLA VALLE D’ITRIA 14 July-2 Aug Four operas, all of them new productions including one premiere commissioned by the festival and a dramaturgic-musical rewriting of a baroque masterpiece, as well as a programme of concerts and films make up this edition. Founded in 1975, this worldclass music festival has always aimed to rediscover and produce forgotten titles and rare executions, but it has also provided a launch pad for emerging musicians and singers. The theme chosen this year focuses on dialogue between different cultures, religions, ages. It concerns the boundary between “Us” and “Them” and reflects on the concepts of suspicion and prejudice, on the need for dialogue and mutual understanding. The programme showcases Artaserse by Johann Adolf Hasse, the newly commissioned nur by Marco Taralli, Zaira by Vincenzo Bellini and L’Orfeo by Luigi Rossi/Daniela Terranova. Concerts and recitals take place in venues throughout the city and its surroundings. For information tel. 0804805100, www.festivaldellavalleditria.it. See also Opera notes.

RAVELLO RAVELLO FESTIVAL 23 June-1 Sept The festival with what must be one of the most breathtaking settings in the world, has an overall theme inspired by the highly evocative concept of “Memories”. The main concerts come to life on a dramatic stage jutting out over the cliffs of the Amalfi coast, at the edge of the gardens of Villa Rufolo, and the programme, drawn up by festival director Stefano Valanzuolo, features some 50 events. True to its multidisciplinary format, the calendar includes symphonic music, chamber music, visual arts, dance and events devoted to design, education, science, drama, film and literature. For tickets and information tel. 089858422, www.ravellofestival.com.
ROME CARACALLA FESTIVAL 30 June-8 Aug The Teatro dell’Opera’s crowd-pleasing summer season opens at the magnificent Caracalla Baths, lighting up the nights with dance, opera, music and a little extra. Opera takes to the stage with the production of a new work by Giorgio Battistelli (who has incorporated music by Monteverdi) entitled Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda (10-15 July), followed by norma by Bellini (21 July-8 Aug) and Attila by
Verdi (31 July-7 Aug). Two extra events are represented by ballet super star Roberto Bolle on stage with other soloists for a gala evening (20 July), and popular Roman actor and comedian Gigi Proietti in a one-man show (16, 30 July). Terme di Caracalla, Via delle Terme di Caracalla. For information tel. 06481601, www.operaroma.it. CASA DEL JAZZ FESTIVAL 4-31 July For the second year running, Casa del Jazz director, veteran jazz event organiser Giampiero Rubei (founder of Rome’s much loved former jazz festival, Villa Celimontana Jazz) draws up a programme that should attract the interest of jazz enthusiasts. The calendar is shorter than it was last year, but there are a couple of big names including a concert by legendary jazz singer and Grammy Award winner Dee Dee Bridgewater (26 July), and a concert by the new star of jazz, saxophonist Joshua Redman and his band (13 July). And there are many other interesting names to look out for, all of them protagonists of one or other of the genres and styles chosen by Rubei to draw up the programme such as “Female vocalists”, “Trumpet players”, “Drum players”, “Double bass players”, “Pianists”. Concerts take place in plein-air in the park of the Casa del Jazz, Viale di Porta Ardeatina 55, tel. 06704731, www.casajazz.it.

BOLZANO AAKASH ODEDRA 24 July In Rising, choreography by Russel Maliphant/Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui/Akram Khan. You’ve got to be pretty fantastic to have choreographers of the calibre of Khan, Maliphant and Cherkaoui creating works for you – all on the same programme. Yes, it says much for the talents of the south Asian dancer Aakash Odedra that all three have created solos for his new show. Odedra is a very different dancer to his mentor, Akram Khan, being small, skinny and animated by a kind of rogue energy. Khan has created a solo for him in which he looks like a creature from Ovid, a human spirit trapped in animal form: a true technical tour de force. Maliphant is the creator of Cut, in which Odedra’s undulating body appears to catch fire and glow whenever he comes into contact with light. And finally, Cherkaoui’s Constellation is more lightweight and whimsical, with Odedra dancing amidst a dozen dangling light bulbs. Teatro Comunale and in other venues. CLAIRE CUNNINGHAM 19-20 July In Me Mobile/Evolution, choreography by Claire Cunningham who is described by The Times as a rising star of the Scottish dance scene. She is a disabled dancer who combines multiple theatrical elements in her dances, including the crutches she has worn since the age of 14 due to osteoporosis. This performance, first presented at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival consists of the works Evolution and Mobile, her first two choreographic efforts, the second created with some help by Jess Curtis. She explains that the piece was inspired by an exhibition of mobiles by artist Alexander Calder: “They looked like they shouldn't balance but did because they were so intricately worked out. I wanted to build a mobile out of crutches, so that was the starting point for that piece." In the second half of the double-bill, Evolution, Cunningham draws on her life story to show us where she has come from and where she is going. She has grown taller since she took up dancing and her story is a quiet and inspiring one: one that celebrates the liberating and healing possibilities of art. This year it’s Cleopatra’s turn, with a plot that follows the life and loves of the famous queen and her involvement with two of the most famous Romans of her day: Mark Antony and Julius Caesar. Don’t expect high quality drama, but a pleasant and relaxed evening with a sure bag of laughs. OPERA OPERA NOTES The Martina Franca Festival opens with a rare work, Artaserse by Johann Adolph Hasse which made both him and the librettist, Pietro Metastasio famous. The second work, nûr by Marco Taralli has been commissioned for the festival. Zaire by Bellini was such a failure when it opened in 1829 in Parma that it was never performed again although parts of it were used in other operas. The last opera is a modern reworking of Luigi Rossi’s Orfeo by Daniela Terranova. Paolo Di Nicola

photographs, accompanied by stories and testimonies. Born in Rome in 1910, trained as art historian, by 1933 Bucarelli was already an official in the administration of the cultural heritage and in 1942, at the age of 32, she was the first woman in Italy to become director of a museum. She would remain director of the GnAM until 1975, making it one of the hubs of Italian culture. For the general public in the post-war years, art was not to disrupt accepted values, and was intended primarily as realism. Such views were far removed from Bucarelli’s attitude, as manifested in the innovative choices of her exhibitions and the works purchased for the museum’s collection, but also in her style. Critic, curator, manager, member of the educated middle class, she was also a sportswoman, lover of designer clothes and automobiles, food and wine connoisseur. This admirable book shows us all these facets of the professional, public, and private life of Bucarelli, a protagonist of Italy’s cultural and social history. Palombi Editori 2011, €29.

PONTIFICAL IRISH COLLEGE AT A CROSSROADS Cont from page 3 content and marred by errors of fact. The bishops’ statement has also criticised those responsible for the report – all of whom are American and one of whom is the rector of the North American College, another seminary in Rome – as having been swayed by their own views of “orthodoxy, priestly identity, separation and devotion”. This is hard-hitting stuff from both sides of the divide in the Roman Catholic Church, with undercurrents about national identity and definitions of orthodoxy that most outsiders find too hard to follow. But the one thing that strikes most of those left behind after the departure of McDonnell, Swan and Hayden is that there are difficult times ahead for the Pontifical Irish College. Is it going to have to face a new more inward-looking period, close the gates of its magnificent grounds and shut the unorthodox out? Or will it be able to continue its outward-looking leadership that has been an inspiration for so many – whether religious or lay – in Rome and elsewhere over the last few decades? The new team – a next vice-rector and head of formation have already been appointed, both of whom are said to be conservative in outlook – has a tough job ahead. Mary Wilsey PariOli - BUOZZi.
