CELEBRaTing TRiLuSSa
The social commentary in the rhymes of Trilussa still rings true in Rome today
“B
ut he’s famous!” goes a voice outside a bar in Trastevere. a footballer? Politician? Big Brother contestant? Film star?” “Ok, was famous,” the voice concedes, meaning none of the above. Trilussa, or Carlo Salustri, to de-anagrammatise his real name, was a poet, and a dialect poet at that. albeit the dialect is romanesco – the patois of Caput Mundi, its other great practitioner being gioachino Belli, who in timeless marble top-hat and tails stands at the beginning of Viale Trastevere. Like his forebear, Trilussa has a restaurant named after him (Taverna Trilussa in Via del Politeama), not to mention a hotel further up the avenue. There’s a Trilussa hardware store – not unsuitable given the down-to-earth nature of his verse. Then there is also an eponymous square flanking the Tiber: up from an amalgam of ancient stone emerges his bronze head turned bluish green with time, then a hand, fingers scanning the air for his audience. not a poet in the grandest sense of the word – “the bard who present past and future sees” – more an aesop of local salon and café. The Middle ages had the stocks; for some 50 years Rome had Trilussa, his rhymes striking home more elegantly than any rotten tomato or artichoke, as in this description of a miser: i used to know this rich old skinflint/ so greedy that in the mirror he’d count/ his dosh, watching how in an instant/ one glance could double its amount.// That lot in the glass i’ll give away/ as charity dictates, while the rest/ is what i set aside for a rainy day./ So saying, he stashed it back in his chest. The pessimistic view of his fellow beings is often made palatable by their assuming the shapes of animals. in Trilussa’s hands zoology becomes a sort of sociology. in one poem an eagle boasts its god-sent genius, at least in its own eyes, only for a cat to miaow back that from a kitchen point of view man far prefers chicken. Even insects get a human make-over, as in La Cecala d’oggi. in Trilussa’s version the ants’ mealymouthed work ethic is overturned. unlike in aesop, come winter, the female cicada, thanks to her moving in with Signor grillo is still singing away in happy idleness, observing that “Work and you scarcely own the shirt you stand up in./ Take it off and you can get two or even a wardrobe.” The vulgar truth in Trilussa comes couched in an elegant couplet. Beady-eyed and sharp-eared over his coffee, the poet observes his contemporaries before impaling them with a well-honed twist of metrics. no romantic mountains or oceans here: inspiration is more likely to come from a visit to the barber or the apothecary. Casting a cold eye on human foibles – too cold according to the socially-engaged Pasolini – Trilussa has been termed a bourgeois qualunquista or fence-sitter, seeking to change nothing, lacking the necessary sense of pity. Others see in his work a world of puppets, behind the smile a wasteland even Eliot cannot match. However, the very bourgeois nature of his poems is what helps lend them such a wide appeal, while Belli’s often impenetrable dialect gets diluted. “Only a few truly vernacular terms remain, like flotsam after a shipwreck,” to cite a recent article by Emanuele Trevi, novelist and runner-up in this year’s Strega prize. aimed at the new middle class, Trilussa’s work is understandable by even a non-italian, let alone a non-Roman reader. indeed, in an age when poets could be more famous than today’s footballers, Trilussa toured not only italy with great success but also argentina. However Trilussa’s fortunes in the 1930s suffered a serious decline. Humour, still less irony, was hardly a cardinal fascist quality. Lest people forget, the grim mood is captured in a poem dated 1938: Wanted in Rome 19 September 2012
Trilussa holds court in the square named in his honour in Trastevere.
The Caffè der Progresso’s/ a dive as low as you can get,/ its customers mere shadows/ of what they were, holding their breath:/ One thought could spell the gallows.// With its film of moisture/ even the wall mirror/ has become obscure;/ Truth, reflected, is no more./ When i attempt/ to watch myself in the glass/ i find i have gone absent…// How bitter is the espresso in the Caffè der Progresso. although to counter the view that he was an anti-fascist, Trilussa would add with his usual candour the self-corrective, “it’s not exactly true. i was not a fascist.” More, by his own admission, he was too keen an observer of human failings to embrace any ideology, right or left. anti-fascist or non-fascist, his 1944 poem numeri nevertheless encapsulates the essence of dictatorship in a metaphor it would be hard to better. The “greatness” of the individual despot, be he sacked primary school teacher, failed painter or ex-bank-robber, is proportional to the number of “zeros”, meaning passive or accepting subjects, that follow him: i may not count much, it’s true’/ said the number One to Zero.// But tell me your own value, you?/ Zilch…” the poem opens. The same arithmetic leads to a damning conclusion (at least regarding the regime’s unthinking followers). To paraphrase: “Put five zeros next to one and you know what i have become? 100,000: That’s what happens with a dictator. The more zeros that come blindly after him, the more his power and value grows.” in short, greatness should not be taken at face value. armed with the artful put-down and a perfect command of rhyme, the poet is there to deflate whatever exaggerations come his way. Some consolation came for the hard-pressed poet after the war. Having hitherto been scarcely able to make a living, in 1950 he was appointed a life senator, an honour to which he responded with “They’ve found a way to bury me before my time”; five months later he passed away. His poems remain as relevant as ever. For example Remedy: Said Sir Wolf to Jove, “Some sheep are bleating/ i steal too much and now it’s in the Press./ impose a gagging order or i’ll sue.”/ Said Jove to Sir Wolf: “Steal less.” it is dated 1932-34 – although, given recent scandals, it sounds uncannily like 2012. 19 September 2012 Wanted in Rome
BOLSEna: HYDRangEaS anD TRagiC WOMEn
A
Lake Bolsena is home to the islands of Martana (left) and Bisentina.
Bolsena has long been a favoured destination for foreigners in the know
s autumn approaches, Rome residents in search of a nearby inland destination need look no further than Bolsena. Head north up the Via Cassia to italy’s largest volcanic lake, Lake Bolsena, whose circular 43 km shoreline practically borders on Tuscany and umbria. Here you will find beautiful scenery, placid waters, charming old towns and good fish meals. Bolsena town, at the head of the lake, is virtually ignored by italian holidaymakers, but its virtues have been known to discerning northern European tourists for decades. in fact, you are likely to hear Dutch, Flemish or german spoken in the streets and restaurants. The waterfront and harbour have a rather retro aspect, reminiscent of a more leisurely era, with swathes of immaculate lawn, fountains and café tables under the trees and huge clumps of amazing blue, mauve and white hydrangeas in summer. Bolsena, in fact, has an annual hydrangea festival, held around the last week of June when the blooms are at their best. great hydrangea bushes also flank the rows of gigantic plane trees lining the avenue leading from the main square down to the lake. The street is named after nicola Colesanti, a local notable, who planted the 220 plane trees along the avenue and the lakeside in 1871. Since then, these trees have never been pruned. They have grown to towering heights and their colossal trunks are twisted into natural abstract sculptures. Bolsena’s main monument is the Cathedral of S. Cristina, dedicated to an 11-year-old girl martyred during the reign of Roman emperor Diocletian. Her yearly feast (23-24 July) is a major event, with the solemn procession carrying the statue of the saint making regular halts to witness live tableaux of the various torments she suffered, enacted by young local girls. The building is very ancient but it has been altered many times and is now an interesting mix of different styles from early Mediaeval onwards. Take time to wander around: the cathedral is a treasure-house of curiosities and works of art. it is also a shrine, deeply revered by Roman Catholic believers due to the miracle, recounted in a celebrated painting by Raphael in the Vatican Stanze which shows the 1263 miracle when Pietro, a priest from Prague was officiating at Mass and blood inexplicably began to pour out of the holy water, staining his robes and the surrounding flagstones. The bloodstained stones are preserved in a golden shrine in the Chapel of the Miracle, accessible through an 11th-12th century marble doorway, which also leads on to the grotto of S. Cristina with the martyr’s sarcophagus, discovered during archaeological excavations in 1880. The miracle of Bolsena was the origin of the annual feast of Corpus Domini, which celebrates what Roman Catholics believe to be the miracle of the real presence of the body and blood of Christ in the Eucharist. Held in June floral carpets are strewn along the streets of many towns to mark the occasion. in Bolsena, of course, the feast is spectacular, with a flower route stretching for three kilometres. Wanted in Rome 19 September 2012
Before you leave the basilica, take note of the chapel dedicated to another woman martyr from Bolsena, St Mary of Peace. She was a missionary nun in China, murdered during the Boxer uprising in 1900 and canonised by Pope John Paul ii in 2000. During the summer, you can take a cruise to the lake islands, Bisentina and Martana, from Bolsena harbour. Some trips include a stop at the Rocca Farnese castle at Capodimonte and a swim or a dive in the crystalline lake waters among the local eels (anguilla), perch (persico), whitefish (coregone) and whitebait (latterini), all regularly on the menus of the local restaurants. Martana, alas, is linked to the fate of another tragic woman, the Ostrogoth Queen amalasunta, murdered there in 534 on the orders of her husband Theodatus, who didn’t agree with her politics. Pleasant outings around the lakeside include the old fishermen’s hamlet of Marta and the town of Capodimonte, with kilometres of grassy shore-side parks where families can rent deck chairs, cycle, swim and relax at one of the many cafés and restaurants. nearby Montefiascone can boast one of Lazio’s best known traditional wines. Few tour guides can resist trotting out the legend of the famous “Est! Est!! Est!!!” This odd name is attributed to a trusted servant of Cardinal Deuc who was travelling through italy on the way to Rome in the year 1111. The cardinal had sent his man on ahead to sample the wines in the inns on their route, with instructions to mark the establishments serving good wine with the Latin “Est!” (in this case meaning “OK here”). The servant was so enthusiastic about Montefiascone vintage that he wrote “Est” three times with exclamation marks. Truth or legend, this was the third italian wine to gain DOC status in 1966. Today, it is exported to Japan, South Korea, Holland, Belgium and germany. You can visit the historic Leonardi cellar on the outskirts of Montefiascone. The cellar was founded by Domenico Leonardi at the end of the 19th century and is still owned by the same family. great grandson, Riccardo aputini, took us on the tour of the catacomb-like tunnels, where 100,000 bottles slumber, strewn in cobweb festoons. We could almost hear the cardinal gloating. Margaret Stenhouse Things to do: Restaurants Bolsena, at the harbour overlooking the lake: Trattoria del Moro, tel. 0761 798810. ITALy’s FuEL PRICEs AT RECoRD LEVELs Fuel prices in italy have reached record levels, and with the end of the Eni/agip weekend discounts of €0.20/litre at the beginning of September, the outlook for the autumn is grim. “Reference prices” quoted by the oil companies are hovering around €1.93 for unleaded, €1.81 for diesel and €0.79 for LPg, with pump attendant service. But these do not take into account the regional supplements, which are decided autonomously at local level, and which have seen unleaded exceed €2.00 in some areas over the past few weeks, notably in the south and in Tuscany. and they also do not include smaller increases for motorway pumps or night service. apart from a brief respite in 2009, the price has been climbing inexorably since the psychological barrier of €1.00 was passed in 2000. But there are still ways to find a lower-priced fuel. For a start, there are unbranded or independent service stations in many areas, the so-called “pompe bianche”: websites like www.pompebianche.it and www.prezzibenzina.it can help you find one near you. and then there are promotions offered by supermarkets, such as Esselunga (in cooperation with Q8), Carrefour, auchan and Conad. Even filling up yourself in the self-service lane brings a discount, but not for LPg – in italy, unlike most other countries, LPg is always filled by the pump attendant. Figures published by the Swiss Touring Club show only norway charging more for unleaded fuel, at €2.04. Close behind italy come the netherlands at €1.93 and Sweden at €1.89. in the uK the price stands at €1.83, while the cheapest fuel in the Eu is in andorra at €1.40. it’s almost worth driving to Russia to fill up: you will pay €0.78 there. italy scores slightly better with diesel, with only the uK, norway and Sweden charging more. Oil companies point out that tax accounts for more than half of the price at the pump. and a study by Cgia Mestre confirms this: italy has the highesttaxed fuel in Europe, with over 58 per cent of the price of unleaded and almost 54 per cent of diesel fuel going to the state. “Considering that 90 per cent of freight in italy is transported by road,” they add, “we can’t exclude a significant hike in prices of the principal consumer goods in the autumn.” Consumer associations adusbef and Federconsumatori calculate that the increase in fuel prices and the consequent knock-on effect on other consumer goods will cost every italian an extra €768 this year.
TRAM 8 PIAzzA VENEzIA ExTENsIoN woRks FACINg hIsToRy? Could the photos of road works along Via delle Botteghe Oscure (see more on wwww.wantedinrome.com) indicate that there are some interesting ruins underneath the surface? The works, on the stretch of road between Largo argentina and Piazza Venezia, are part of the project to move the terminal of Tram 8 from its present position in front of Teatro argentina to Piazza S. Marco, just off Piazza Venezia. This is an archeologically sensitive area of Rome, sandwiched as it is between the ancient Roman ruins in Largo argentina, the spot where Julius Caesar is said to have been assassinated, and those to the north side of the Campidoglio, one of the administrative and religious centres of the ancient city. Via delle Botteghe Oscure runs in front of Crypta Balbi, a portico built by Cornelius Balbus, one of augustus’ generals, which has also proved to be an important mediaeval site and now houses a museum.
LIoN ATTACkINg A hoRsE LoAN hIghLIghTs RoME-gETTy AgREEMENT The ancient greek statue of the Lion attacking a Horse owned by the Capitoline Museums in Rome is now on view at the getty Villa in Malibu, California. The loan of the marble masterpiece, which has never been out of Rome since it was initially brought to the city, possibly as spoils of war two millennia ago, is part of a new agreement between the Eternal City and the american museums. The original fourth-century BC greek sculpture, now newly restored, had been hidden away behind the Palazzo dei Conservatori since the 1920s. When it returns to Rome after its american trip it will have a prominent position close to the original Marcus aurelius statue, now under cover in a specially-designed part of the museums. The loan of the Lion attacking a Horse, which has been the inspiration for many subsequent works of art, is part of an agreement between Rome’s civic museums and the getty Museum for collaboration on future restoration projects, loans, exhibitions and conferences. The Knights of Columbus, america’s prestigious and wealthy Roman Catholic organisation that funded the restoration of the early Hellenistic statue, has been instrumental in setting up the agreement. The Lion attacking a Horse will be visible in the atrium of the getty Villa until February 2013. The Villa owns a small early baroque bronze of the group attributed to antonio Susini that will also be on display as part of the same exhibition.
RoME’s CIAMPINo AIRPoRT To CLosE FoR REPAIRs Rome’s Ciampino airport, mainly a hub for low-cost airlines, is to close for urgent repairs to the runway from 24 September to 4 October. all flights scheduled for Ciampino in that period will be transferred to nearby Fiumicino airport. Ciampino – officially called g.B. Pastine international airport – currently handles 80 flights per day by Ryanair and Wizzair, as well as military and ViP traffic. Low-cost line easyJet has already moved all its Rome slots to Fiumicino since november 2011. aDR, the company managing Rome airports, said the work has been planned over the past three months to reduce problems for passengers. The bus service by Terravision and other operators providing shuttle services to the centre of the city will also be shifted to Leonardo da Vinci airport at Fiumicino, aDR added. Enac, the national civil aviation authority, promised that Fiumicino will not suffer from problems or delays. all the technical support offices, they said, will move their personnel to Fiumicino for the duration of the closure, while the military aviation operations at Ciampino will be shifted to the air Force base of Pratica di Mare. Meanwhile, Ciampino and Marino town residents, who have formed a committee to protest the noise and pollution produced by the airport, say this move proves it would be possible to shift all civilian flights permanently to Fiumicino. Marino mayor adriano Palozzi and Ciampino mayor Simone Lupi called on economic development minister Corrado Passera to issue a decree closing Ciampino permanently to low-cost flights, now that it appears to be perfectly possible to do so on a temporary basis. PARMA FESTIVAL VERDI 2012 1-28 Oct Rigoletto, La Battaglia di Legnano and a concert dedicated to the music of Verdi have been chosen this year to celebrate the composer in his native Parma during the month of his birth. This internationally renowned annual festival attracts top-class conductors and interpreters of Verdi who work side by side and together with the Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini and the Choir of the Teatro Regio di Parma, as well as a vast and knowledgeable public. organisers have announced that this year’s event is particularly poignant as it comes in the wake of the destructive earthquake this summer that destabilised the lives of the people and set back the economy of this productive region. Its aftermath – they point out – has highlighted the need to safeguard and nurture the activity of the city’s Teatro Regio. So the festival is also seen as an opportunity to fling the theatre’s doors open to the public and to welcome as many people as possible to this wounded land. The Rigoletto that has been chosen is the 1987 production by the Teatro Regio di

The vision of the future that characterises this year’s Torinodanza is best expressed in the “Focus Domani” section that works for a young audien-
ce, but also works with young performers. It foresees sweeping productions that allow parents and their children to enjoy the same work (as in the case of La linea d’ombra, created for Torinodanza by Virgilio Sieni). The other two works of the section feature Carlotta Sagna and Phia Menard. The latter has created two similar works, capable of making objects dance, addressing an audience of children and of adults respectively. Both will be in Turin and, together with Kiss & Cry, they offer a glimpse of the “hybrid” dance that plays such an important role in contemporary European choreography. ROME ROMAEUROPA FESTIVAL 26 Sept-25 Nov In its 27th glorious year, the subtitle is “All that we can do” which – as organisers point out, is an exhortation to each of us. In this critical moment of European history marked by challenges of many kinds and profound changes that lead us to question our place, our opportunities, our contribution to the future, it is an invitation to be actors in our lives. And this interesting arts festival, that comes to life each year thanks to the collaboration and contribution of important cultural institutions as well as state, regional and city authorities, proposes to offer creative experiences, visions and influences of artists which can inspire us and help us understand and interpret our time, because creativity is deeply rooted in reality: “It tells our story, it helps us understand

The programme of the festival has a pluralistic vision offering diverse paths and experiences. There are many big names on the two-month calendar that is especially tantalising for dance enthusiasts. Some that stand out are those of Bill T. Jones, Akram Khan, Sasha Waltz, Batsheva, Constanza Macras. But there are also lots of lesser known names as the festival stays true to its mission of promoting new (and possibly iconoclastic) talents and focusing on new creative idioms. There is a fair amount of theatre and drama featuring the likes of William Kentridge and Fanny Ardant. There is lots of experimental music, a special tribute to John Cage with a series of events that question how current his research is and especially, how much longer his way of thinking will continue to influence contemporary artists. Performances are loosely grouped according to a series of themes: “Wake Up!”, “Crossing the Limit of What is Known”, “All That We Can Do”. Events take place in theatres and
other venues all over the city. Special convenience formulas for reduced price tickets are available. For booking and information tel. 0645553050, www.romaeuropa.net. FOTOGRAFIA FESTIVAL INTERNAZIONALE DI ROMA 20 Sept-28 Oct The 2012 edition of FotoGrafia – the Rome International Photography Festival – confirms the event’s growing international prestige and continues to promote contemporary photography in its various forms and languages. It also stays true to its mission to give space to emerging talents. The theme of this 11th edition is “Work”: a keyword in the history of photography, as well as a fundamental concept in a society and culture marked by profound changes. As always, exhibitions by prizewinners of a series of new projects will feature alongside shows by famous artists. A wide range of public and private galleries, museums and city spaces are involved in the festival that also foresees a number of performances and events. The heart of the festival
beats at the city’s contemporary art museum in Testaccio which also provides a stage for encounters and slide-shows. MACRo, Piazza orazio Giuliani, tel. 06671070400, www.fotografiafestival.it. FESTIVAL DELLA LETTERATURA DI VIAGGIO 27-30 Sept This interesting event, organised by the Italian Geographical Society and Federculture, is dedicated to the art of the literary travelogue in its various forms: books, films, photographs, drama and cartoons. In its fifth edition, this year’s programme of the successful festival features talks and encounters with climber and explorer Reinhold Messner, film director Giuseppe Tornatore, author Alessandro Piperno and journalist and author Paolo Rumiz. Three different exhibitions focus on Afghanistan, Jordan and the Himalayas. There is a tribute to mountain climber Walter Bonatti and much more. Most events take place in Villa Celimontana’s Palazzetto Mattei and its gardens. For information www.festivaletteraturediviaggio.it.
DAnCE FLORENCE MAGGIODANZA 27-30 Sept In Sechs Tanz and Les noces, choreography by Jiri Kylian and Andonis Foniadakis. The dance company directed by Francesco Ventriglia performs Kylian’s witty and extravagant Six Dances on music by Mozart. The work is a showpiece for the humour of both the choreographer and the composer. The dancers, in powdered faces, wigs and opulent black ball gowns take the audience into the 18th century with an entertaining satire of the costumes of the time. The other work, Les noces, is a new creation by Foniadakis for the Florentine ballet company. Teatro Comunale, tel. 0552779350, www.maggiofiorentino.it.
MILAN BALLETTO DEL TEATRO ALLA SCALA 3-13 Oct In Raymonda, choreography by Petipa/ Vikharev. The Russian choreographer Sergei Vikharev created this lavish production of Raymonda for La Scala to recreate the taste for grandeur and the atmosphere of the time under Marius Petipa in St Petersburg at the end of the 19th century. He tells the story as it was originally written, with extensive mime and making sense of the feeble storyline. The choreography has been restored to its classical structure and simplicity, with the original painted sets and hundreds of reproduced costumes, and the production is a true banquet: pomp, circumstance, and an entire world on stage. The production requires a huge cast and dozens of dancers and children from La Scala Academy flood the stage as knights, celestial maidens, cherubs or Saracens. With them Raymonda’s court comes alive providing the corps de ballet and the soloists with many balletic challenges. Teatro alla Scala, tel. 0272003744, www.teatroallascala.org.

Buenos Aires Tango Festival comes to life in halls, foyers, corridors and other spaces of the Parco della Musica in collaboration with the city of Buenos Aires that traditionally hosts the world’s most important annual tango festival. Many famous artists come to Rome from the Argentinean capital to present a rich calendar of performances, dance classes, lectures, exhibitions as well as a special “Tangheria” that offers a taste of the atmosphere in the night clubs and the milongas of Buenos Aires. Tango fans will recognise the names Daniel “Pipì” Piazzolla, the Cuarteto La Bordona, Juan Villareal, tango dance champions Milena Plebs and David Alejandro Palo, Horacio Godoy and Magdalena Gutiérrez Calviño. Two interesting novelties this year are represented by a performance by winners of the Campeonato de Campeones and a new Italian Tango championship open to all tango dancers. AKRAM KHAN 26-28 Sept In Desh. “Desh” means homeland in Bengali and in it, acclaimed dancer and choreographer Akram Khan brings together numerous tales as he explores his Bangladeshi roots and the contradictions of his British-Asian identity. His most recent solo work is an intensely personal journey of discovery as he shares his memories and his thoughts throughout the 85-minute solo performance with many arresting and beautiful moments. The stories are heard through recollected anecdotes and a recorded soundtrack that features telephone conversations with his distant father and a call-centre operator. According to critics in London where the work premiered last September, “Whatever the scene, whatever the story, Khan seems torn. The confusion and chaos of his personal life and that of Bangladesh are laid bare for all to see. “Desh” is beautiful right to the end when a forest of hundreds of ribbons of white silk descend and engulf the stage. It’s a memorable metaphor for the state of his mind. Khan looks a lonely figure as he moves among them, searching for

Cranko’s first staging of Romeo & Juliet was for the ballet company of La Scala in Milan in 1958. The title role of Juliet was danced by the by 21 year-old Carla Fracci. Cranko then revised the ballet and his final version remains popular across the world. Cranko’s staging is renowned for its strong corps de ballet dances, which set the atmosphere. A demanding requirement for the Rome company and the shaky state of its ensemble. Teatro dell’opera, Piazza B. Gigli. Booking and information tel. 064817003, www.operaroma.it. RUI HORTA 3, 4 Oct In Focus Cage. As part of celebrations of the 100th anniversary of John Cage’s birth, pianist Rolf Hind has collaborated with acclaimed choreographer Rui Horta and dancer Silvia Bertoncelli in a new work that showcases the genius of one of the 20th-century’s great artists. Hind soundtracks Horta’s choreography with Cage’s sonatas and interludes, a group of 20 short pieces for prepared piano that are often considered amongst his finest achievements. Cage put screws, bolts and rubbers into the workings of the piano to transform the most familiar instrument into an exotic, colourful percussion orchestra. Horta in turn takes influence from Cage and his long collaboration with Merce Cunningham, creating a work that is intimate and poetic yet permeated with Cage’s love of randomness. At Teatro Palladium, for Romaeuropa Festival. For booking and information tel. 0645553050, www.romaeuropa.net.
Utilising a score created in collaboration with the dancers own rhythmic impulses and employing their bodies as percussion instruments, the soundscape is integrated with original electronic music. Finally the Canadian choreographer Crystal Pite presents Grace Engine described as “an exploration of the familiar storylines that connect mankind, positioning and framing narrative elements within Pite’s choreographic language”. The choreography contains flashes of recognisable narrative, as if the body itself is a cinematic device, capable of jump cuts, flashbacks and montage. The performance has been chosen to conclude the annual “Short Theatre” Festival that showcases a selection of experimental theatrical works from European drama festivals. TURIN CEDAR LAKE CONTEMPORARY BALLET 18, 20 Sept In orbo nuovo, choreography by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, and in the tryptich Violet kid, Tuplet, Grace Engine, choreography by Hofesh Shechter, Alexander Ekman, Crystal Pike. This excellent new York-based company directed by Benoit Swan Pouffer has built up an amazing repertoire by commissioning emerging contemporary choreographers to create a wide-ranging spectrum of work. In orbo nuovo, superstar choreographer Cherkaoui explores a construct of the mind. Inspired by Jill Bolte Taylors My Stroke of Insight, a book in which she expresses her experience of having a stroke, Cherkaoui tries to create a universe where past and future meet. The piece tackles issues of freedom, perspective, loneliness and enlightenment. It searches for balance between left and right, between heaven and earth as it explores the present moment trying to untangle the future from the past. The second offering comes in the form of a triptych made up by Violet Kid, Tuplet and Grace Engine. Violet Kid is the second work created by Shechter for Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet and is performed by 15 company members, set to an original score created by the choreographer who continues his unique examinations of man’s struggle for harmony within a complex and sometimes horrifying universe. Ekman’s Tuplet is a swift, pulsating, 18-minute tour-de-force for six dancers which asks the question, what is rhythm?

OPERA NOTES Verdi’s Rigoletto opens the Parma Festival with Leo nucci and Jessica Pratt conducted by Daniel oren and directed by Elisabetta Brusa. This is followed by La Battaglia di Legnano with young singers and the young conductor, Andrea Battisoni, born in Verona in 1987, who is already making a name for himself at home and abroad. The opera is directed by Pier Luigi Pizzi in the version produced at Rome’s Teatro dell’opera in 1983. “Zorba the Greek”. This book was read in Greece on the island of Naxos, at the Santana Beach Club in Agia Anna, during the week 18-24 of June last by an Australian reserved young lady living in Rome. She gave the impression to be familiar with sea water and duly helmeted cycling - obviously not performing both together at the same time! In the course of a short conversation we briefly shared some views about Rome, where I have lived myself for a number of years. Although I heard only a few words said in Italian, I am inclined to take for granted that she is well acquainted with my language. “Sandy” conversations do not always offer ample opportunities for verbal interpersonal exchange of general and/or specific issues, and for this reason I should like to come in contact with the above mentioned lady, although not on the beach and without the scenery of any sea! Should my wish meet with the addressee’s consent - if this message of mine will reach the so far unidentified person - I would be more than pleased to be contacted through the reliable services offered by advertising@wantedinrome.com, in Rome.
