Transsexual prostitutes in Rome ply a dangerous trade

“S

ei operata? Sei dotata? Quanto costa?” Four youngsters in a sports car are hassling prostitutes in front of the abattoir. Valeria, an elegant mulatta, scans the square for clients. She will have to make €150 tonight. The youngsters look like students; the car is obviously daddy’s. Earlier they tried to get lucky with tourist girls. Now they are on a “puttan tour”: Via Salaria, the abattoir, Viale Guglielmo Marconi, EUR. They are Valeria’s age. Later on tonight they will score drugs before going home. Valeria had to leave home when she was 15. Her father had gone berserk when he discovered that his son Valerio liked dressing up as a girl. Valeria was thrown straight into adulthood. No holding hands, no romantic strolls, but impersonal paid sex: 30 reais for oral sex, 50 for the full menu. Unlike her peers, Valeria managed to stay clear of drugs. Violence, however, became part of everyday life. She carried a razorblade to cut her forearms in case the police would arrest her – in Brazil it was safer ending up in hospital than in a police station. In Europe, life would no doubt be better. Around the abattoir is a smell of meat, waste and excrement. Valeria tries to balance herself in high heels. Cars and motorcycles jam the square. Almost midnight and it is like rush hour. Valeria has to earn the money before dawn. Since her visa expired, every public space has become off-limits by day. Especially in August, when the city is near empty, a tall mulatta stands out even more. “Every morning I pay a private cab to go home,” she says. “Unemployed and retired Italians make fortunes driving us girls.” Right next to the square a client drops Valeria off. She spots Paula from Argentina, whom she often chats to between tricks. They communicate in a mix of Spanish, Portuguese and Roman dialect they pick up from clients. Still, Valeria and Paula are not close. In this square nobody is. Here, everybody is either a client or a competitor. “Look at them,” Paula kicks off. “Office workers, civil servants, builders: ordinary people longing for adventure. Europeans chasing tropical fantasies.” “Well Paula, the client I just had treated me really nice. He said I am very feminine. Maybe one day he’ll invite me for dinner.” “No, mi amor! Stop dreaming. Italians would rather be caught dead than be seen in public with a transsexual.” She turns to the row of cars and yells, “How does it feel, at home shagging the Third World?” It is 02.00. A police car patrols the square. Instantly, all clients accelerate their cars hoping the police will not pull them over. Valeria removes her high heels and runs off barefoot. In 15 months’ time, the police have detained 580 transgendered prostitutes on this square. She hides in the high grass on the hills. The neighbourhood committee regularly asks the municipal services to burn it. Valeria considers working in an apartment. She could rent a room in a side street off Via Condotti. The owner is an excarabiniere. Police gone, one by one the girls resume their places. Despite the risk of being sent to Rome’s detention centre, Valeria likes working the streets. She likes being in the open. All day she hides in a monolocale tucked away in a Pigneto backstreet – Italian women call the police as soon as they spot a transsexual in their building. An aged Brazilian transsexual with Italian citizenship owns the studio flat. The previous generation still succeeded in sham marriages. These Wanted in Rome 3 October 2012

naturalised transsexuals buy property and set up businesses in Brazil and Italy. They pass customs without difficulty and do not worry about police controls when driving – they even got their driving licence in Italy. Meanwhile, the Mario Mieli volunteers are on their weekly tour. The organisation helps foreign transsexuals, distributing condoms and following up on girls taking medication – half the girls have hepatitis, more than one in ten has syphilis and two thirds of the older ones have HIV. The organisation helped Valeria to take a course. Valeria would like to become a hairdresser. But apart from the hair salon a Brazilian transsexual owns near Porta Maggiore, only one other salon in Rome, the one on Via Urbana, employs a transgender hairdresser. Valeria is saving up for that last operation; she wants to become a woman. “But how then would I make a living?” she sighs. “I would lose all my clients!” At around 04.00 loud voices fill the square. The girls are giving come-ons to the drivers and the passengers. Albanian gangs encircle the square. At this time of the night, many girls carry a night’s takings in their purse. The girls start leaving the abattoir in small groups. Empty spots appear. Valeria wants to leave but she still needs €120 to send money home to help her mother out. Last time she called even her father spoke to her. They had not spoken since she had to leave home. He told her that he was sorry and that she was always welcome. He had used the money to buy himself a car. Almost dawn. The early train passes the Palmiro Togliatti station. On Via Prenestina, heavy traffic is picking up. The square in front of the abattoir looks desolate. Valeria is still short of €70. An exclusive BMW cruises the square and slows to a stop in front of Valeria. The driver is a distinguishedlooking forty-something. Valeria spots his wedding ring. “Hey honey. Got lost?” she says. “Next door, they do meat. Here, we do flesh.” “Davvero? You must be Brazilian.” “No. Colombian, actually.” Sensing blood, the hunter moves in for the kill: “Let’s walk on the wild side!” “Do you have €100?” “Hundred? Vabbè. HARVEST FESTIVALS AROUND LAZIO A feast of chestnuts and hazelnuts in the Cimini Hills

s you head north along Via Cassia during the autumn, around Lago di Vico and the Cimini hills about 50 kms north of Rome, chestnuts fall into the road like raindrops. The chestnut and hazelnut woods surrounding the lake, formed in a volcanic crater, are a protected natural reserve encompassing over 3,000 hectares. Throughout October the region hosts several festivals that combine the history and the folklore of the hilltop towns and celebrate the autumn harvest and the distinguished chestnut and other autumn fruit grown on the fertile volcanic soil. One of the most famous sagre delle castagne, or chestnut festivals, is in the town of Soriano nel Cimino, which becomes an historical stage throughout the month. During the first three weekends in October chestnuts, which have been a native product since ancient times, are roasted in the streets. The chestnut festival plays out throughout the squares and streets in a grand mediaeval and renaissance parade flaunting hundreds of historic gowns and swordsmen, in addition to a dramatic archery contest. Soriano native Paola Kovnick has been a part of the festival since she was practically a baby. Her father was one of the founders 47 years ago and she has been helping ever since to iron flags, sew costumes and serve wine. Her favourite part of the festival is the rhythm of the music, the same she used to play when she was a young drummer girl in the parade. She and her husband Michael now co-own a culinary and travel company called Culture Discovery that holds cooking classes and leads excursions in the area. Some items on the menu for visitors in October include chestnut and chickpea soup and veal and chestnut stew. One of her favourite culinary endeavours is making the famous Monte Bianco dessert. The recipe dates back to the 15th century and is reported to have been served in the home of the illustrious and notorious Borgia family who had summer residences in the area. It consists of pureed sweet chestnuts that Paola says are mixed with brandy and sugar and sieved to form the shape of a mountain, hence its name. While Paola is a model for sustaining the local traditions of her hometown, American-born Michael notes that although the festival is named after the chestnuts, it is in fact a culture and harvest festival celebrating the town’s history, location and other culinary traditions as well.

The town of Soriano nel Cimino is situated on the south-eastern slope of Monte Cimino, which at 1,053 m is the highest peak of the Cimini hills. At the top of the hill is an imposing view of the Orsini castle built in the 13th century as the summer residence of Pope Nicholas III. The castle has hosted tastings of local products such as hazelnut and chestnut biscuits and a special type of gnocchi con ferro that was traditionally made using a knitting needle to roll the raw pasta into its spiral shape. Several other towns in the Cimini such as Canepina, Caprarola, Carbognano, and Vallerano, all located in the province of Viterbo, celebrate the abundance of chestnuts with festivals, fairs and markets. According to Datatravel, a company that specialises in the promotion of Made in Italy products, 50-60,000 quintals (or about 6,000 tons) of chestnuts are produced in the area, testifying to the fertility of the volcanic soil. The travel and publishing company explains the differences between the chestnuts from the Cimino area around Lago di Vico and those from the Tolfa area between Rome and Civitavecchia on the coast. The Tolfa chestnuts are called marroni, and are larger and heavier, and have a richer, sweeter taste. Many of the chestnut festivals in Lazio occur in traditional wineries, highlighting the pairing of chestnuts and grapes. Several towns south of Rome such as Marino, Genzano and Frosinone also have grape festivals throughout October. The town of Piglio in the province of Frosinone celebrates the Cesanese grape with a folk festival enhanced by a tasting of the region’s famous Cesanese wine. And for the stronger palates there are the sagra della porchetta on 7 October in Poggio Bustone in the province of Rieti, famous for boneless pork roast (as well as being the birthplace of the late singer-songwriter Lucio Battisti), and the sagra della salsiccia – a sausage festival – in the village of Morlupo just north of Rome, which is scheduled for the last weekend in October. There is no better time than October to enjoy the spirit of gastronomy in Lazio. Theresa Potenza

or a city with such a large and varied immigrant population, Rome has relatively few restaurants that serve ethnic cuisines, and even fewer that serve authentic food which hasn’t been watered down for the provincial Roman palate. Thankfully, there are a few venues in Rome that serve excellent food from around the globe. There are many more that serve passable food, and others that are offensive to mouths everywhere. Here are some places I like, and a few I avoid: Ethiopian food is one of my favourite cuisines, right up there with Italian and Turkish. Nearly a dozen restaurants in Rome serve Ethiopian and Eritrean fare but, in general, I find them bland and disappointing. Mesob (Via Prenestina 118), which I maintain is one of the best restaurants in Rome, is another story. Owner and chef Kuki Tadese prepares family recipes that are richly spiced and full of flavour. She excels at vegetarian dishes and serves braised vegetables, lentils, split peas and bitter greens that are simmered and stewed to perfection. Among the meat dishes, doro wat (chicken with onions, ginger and spices) and kay tibs (beef with spicy peppers) are standouts. Diners share dishes, which are distributed atop sheets of spongy injera. The service can be slow because Kuki is in the kitchen doing almost everything alone. Everyone who has ever joined me for a meal at Mesob has agreed that it was well worth the wait. Enqutatash (Viale della Stazione Prenestina 55) is another solid choice. I used to live two blocks from this place when it was a hole in the wall that felt more like a garage than a restaurant and the cook would bring in tupperware containers full of food from home. Now it is a proper restaurant with tablecloths and other modern conveniences. They still serve the same home-cooked, liberally spiced Ethiopian food as before. And they serve tej, a wine flavoured with honey and spices, which is hard to come by in Rome. Would you believe me if I told you some of Rome’s tastiest snacks are sold from a shopping bag in front of the Filipino embassy? There, at Viale delle Medaglie d’Oro 112, a woman sells carefully prepared and neatly packaged Filipino snacks like hopia and ube cake. You can also find hopia at the Mercato Esquilino, but they aren’t quite as satisfying as the embassy-based version. In general, the doner kebabs in Rome are gross. The mystery meat comes in pre-formed frozen cones manufactured in Germany. Beyond vile. There are very few places, however, that do it right. Ali Babà on Via Carroceto near the Arco di Travertino metro stop is one of them. At a pinch, I’ll grab a doner from the Turkish guys at Istanbul Kebab (Via Giulio Cesare 126) in Prati. It won’t blow your mind, but if you need a quick fix it will hit the spot. A short distance from Piazza Vittorio, Il Bananito serves Colombian and Peruvian fast food and juices in a small store-front near Porta Maggiore (at Via di Porta Maggiore 39 to be precise). The tamales aren’t bad, nor are the papas rellenas (potatoes stuffed with meat and olives). Japanese restaurants, fast food, and pan-Asian restaurants with a Japanese focus are fairly prevalent. Highlights include Take Sushi on Viale di Trastevere, Doozo on Via Palermo in Monti, and Sushi Ko on Via degli Irpini in S. Lorenzo. There are at least half a dozen Korean places around Termini and one in Trastevere. They are inconsistent at best and each has its own set of specialties. Bi Won specialises in marinated meats grilled tableside. The meat quality leaves something to be desired. The ingredients are significantly better north of Termini at Gainn. The bulgogi at Hana is good but outrageously expensive. I once had a bulgogi and a beer for €35. It was a big beer, but still... I recently tried I-Gio in Trastevere. The ingredients were relatively fresh, but the dishes themselves were bland. Perhaps you are better off cooking Korean food at home; it is certainly cheaper. The well-stocked Korean grocery store on Via Cavour 84 will do the trick. Chinese restaurants in Rome tend to be cheap and awful. Wanted in Rome 3 October 2012

Food & Beverage (aka Hong Kong Food & Beverage) near Termini is an exception. If you order from the Italian menu it will be a huge disappointment; Chinese diners are served different dishes — just look around the dining room for proof. To get the good stuff, point to what crowded tables of families and friends are eating and ask to see the case in the back, which displays daily specials. You will be treated to a pretty good meal, not the best on earth, but probably the best in Rome. And if you order 48 hours in advance, they will make Peking duck. There are a few passable Indian restaurants in Rome. Majarajah in Monti is decent. Guru around the corner is ok, if pricey. The best of the lot is the cheap cafeteria style Kabir Fast Food on Via Mamiani near Piazza Vittorio. The price is always right and it never disappoints. I am sorry to report that most Mexican in Rome is inedible and expensive to boot. I have yet to find Thai or Vietnamese that are worth talking about. I haven’t checked it out yet, but apparently on the second Sunday of the month, members of Rome’s Thai community serve food at the laghetto in EUR. I am even more sad to report that American food in Rome is usually done very badly. Burgers are universally terrible, although the gourmet burger trend shows no sign of letting up. Sorry, but a super lean patty made with delicate (tasteless) Piemontese beef is hardly a burger. While stellar international dining options may be limited, you can find ingredients from around the globe for sale in the Mercato Esquilino. Whether you are preparing a Mexican feast, a Polish free-for-all or a Thanksgiving dinner, Mercato Esquilino’s got what you are looking for. There is loads of produce from Africa, Asia and the Americas. Mercato Trionfale is also well stocked with international ingredients. NEW L’ITALIA DI LE CORBUSIER 18 Oct-17 Feb 2013 This exhibition illustrates the significance and the role played by Italy in Le Corbusier’s artistic training and architectural thinking. Following a chronological and thematic itinerary, it traces the changes in points of view and interests from which the artist – painter, architect and sculptor – examined Italian culture over the course of his life. It highlights the years of his youth in which he travelled to Italy to study art and the Roman civilisation. It then focuses on the planning research conducted by Le Corbusier in the 1930s and his attempt to introduce his ideas to the contemporary city by seeking a commission in Italy. Particular attention is paid to the figure of Le Corbusier the painter and this section includes his paintings from the Purism period alongside others by Carlo Carrà, Giorgio Morandi and Gino Severini. Lastly, the exhibition features the two most important projects that Le Corbusier worked on in Italy after the war: the new hospital in Venice and the Olivetti Electronic Calculation Centre at Rho, both left unbuilt due to the architect’s death in 1965. 100 SGUARDI SU ROMA 17 July-28 Oct In 1946 Cesare Zavattini, screenwriter of Neorealist masterpieces Shoeshine and Bicycle Thieves, commissioned 50 Italian artists to paint a picture on the theme “Aspects of Rome”. Each painting would have to be the same size (20 x 26 cm) and would be paid the same amount. The collection would be acquired by film producer Ferruccio Caramelli. Zavattini’s idea brought together artists of different generations. In addition to masters such as De Chirico, Savinio, De Pisis, Severini, Prampolini, and the Roman School of the 1920s and 1930s (Donghi, Pirandello, Ferrazzi, Capogrossi, Mafai, Levi), all trends in post-war Rome were represented, from expressionism (Stradone, Vespignani, Scialoja) to neocubism (Afro, Guttuso). All works are of high quality and many are small masterpieces. In 1948, Zavattini organised a Rome Painting Prize along the same lines. The first three prize-winning works would become part of the collection. Giovanni Stradone, little known today, won the first prize with his Colosseo. In 1983 the collection was purchased by Banca Nazionale del Lavoro, which in 1996 commissioned 50 artists to create a portrait of Rome on the occasion of the Giubileo, with the same criteria as Zavattini’s original idea. Only a few of the paintings of the 1990s reach the same level as those of 1946; there are some exceptions, such as Baruchello, Titina Maselli, Cantafora, Cuniberti, Salvatori. As a whole, the exhibition is an encyclopedia of art in Rome, as small in size as it is remarkable in artistic quality and historical interest. NEW RICHARD ARTSCHWAGER 27 Sept-31 Oct The Rome exhibition by American artist Richard Artschwager presents a group of new sculptures made of formica, one of his signature materials. Artschwager has been associated with a number of styles from Pop and Minimalism to Conceptual Art, however his unique vision places him outside any preconceived category. This show precedes a major museum retrospective at Whitney Museum in RENZO VESPIGNANI Until 18 Nov A decade after the death of Renzo Vespignani (Rome, 1924-2001), this exhibition traces the trajectory of an artist whose precocious blossoming was precipitated by the trauma of the bombing of Rome, the fall of fascism, and the German occupation in 1943-44. His paintings, engravings, drawings both bear witness to, and comment on Italian history, from the deprivation of the post-war period, to the contradictions of the reconstruction and the economic boom. Especially until the early 1960s, Vespignani’s visual language had an abrasive elegance and raging intensity – in dialogue with Grosz, Sironi, De Chirico, Rembrandt, Burri – that were valued by artists, intellectuals, filmmakers such as Visconti, Gio Ponti, Irene Brin, Antonioni, Pasolini, Petri. His subjects shifted from the bombed sites, depopulated industrial cityscapes, freight yards of the 1940s, to the rise of suburban neighbourhoods in the 1950s, followed by the cars, prostitutes and other dwellers of the violent edges of the Dolce Vita, and later neocapitalism. But it would be a mistake to just look at the content of Vespignani’s works. The vehicles of his initial expressionism were a cutting drawing and etching mark and a thick impasto; from 1948, his painting became more naturalistic to comply with the precepts of realism. In the late 1950s he shifted again towards a more existentialist imagery, a more textured and bolder painting. From the 1960s on, he often looked outside Italy– to Bacon, Hockney, even Tobey – in his own personal way. Like many Italian artists active in the most exhilarating, culturally advanced phase of the Italian 20th century, Vespignani needs revisiting. The thorough choice of works in this exhibition, curated by Valerio Rivosecchi and Netta Vespignani, provides an excellent opportunity to do so. COME SUONA VERMEER 27 Sept-20 Jan To coincide with the exhibition on Johannes Vermeer (1632-1675), great exponent of Dutch painting of the 17th century, Scuderie del Quirinale hosts a series of free workshops for children aged four to six (11.00-12.30) and seven to 11 (11.00-13.00). Children are taken on an audio path of eight masterpieces by Vermeer as well as about 50 works by other Dutch artists from the same period. Participants are accompanied through the alleys and canals of Delft, Vermeer’s hometown, in the footsteps of the artist’s life and career. Kids are invited to enter 17th-century houses to view intimate domestic scenes and the atmosphere of middleclass life described in detail in Vermeer’s paintings. A video connects Vermeer’s masterpieces with contemporary homes in a suggestive game of references between images and sounds. MUSIC FESTIVAL NUOVI SPAZI MUSICALI 4-22 Oct The Festival of Contemporary Music organised and lovingly curated by composer Ada Gentile with the collaboration of Rome’s foreign academies, cultural institutes, embassies and state and city institutions. Concerts take place in the historic venues of the Hungarian Academy’s Palazzo Falconieri, the Polish Academy’s Palazzo Blumensthil and the American Academy’s Villa Aurelia, and they are all free of charge. The festival kicks off with the performance of two “pocket-sized” operas, each of them not longer than 25 minutes by two well-known Italian composers: Fabrizio De Rossi and Marco Betta. They will be performed by young musicians picked by music conservatories on 4 Oct. The second event foresees a collaboration with the Union of Ukrainian Composers and features the performance by the young accordion player Cesare Chacchieretta, of works by Ligeti, Rosato, Remigio, Gianfreda and Gentile on 8 Oct. The Meitar Ensemble from Tel Aviv performs for the first time in Rome on 11 Oct, and on 15 Oct the young Armenian pianist Hayk Melikyan plays works by contemporary Armenian, Italian and Polish composers. The festival ends in the beautiful setting of Villa Aurelia with a chamber concert by the Pulse Chamber Music ensemble from Miami in a programme which includes works by winners of the Luciano Berio Rome Prize, of the Elliot Carter Rome Prize, and by the Pulitzer Prize for Music, Jennifer Higdon on 22 Oct. CONTEMPOARTENSEMBLE / PAIK ON CAGE 6 Oct The contemporary music ensemble founded in 1992 by Mauro Ceccanti performs a concert entirely dedicated to the music of John Cage on the 100th anniversary of his birth. The creative atmosphere of the event is rendered more effective by the retro-projection of a video dedicated to Cage by the Korean artist, Nam June Paik. Paik and Cage performed together for the first time in 1960 when Cage played while Paik shampooed his hair marking the start of a long-standing relationship carried out in the light-hearted and irreverent vein of the Fluxus movement founded in that same period. Paik’s video is a touching tribute to Cage, sometimes affectionate and other times ironic, projected for the first time in Italy by Romaeuropa. The video sees the participation of other significant figures of the time such as the soprano Cathy Berberian, the composer and pianist David Tudor, the music theoretician Alvin Lucier, and others. It effectively illustrates the atmosphere of the American avant-garde at the end of the 1960s and early 1970s with their happenings involving dozens of not only musicians, but also artists of every kind. Since then, this insiders’ classical music hall at the university has hosted excellent music seasons featuring many prodigies, geniuses and stars. In line with its top-class tradition, the season is inaugurated this year by the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra conducted by Ton Koopman. Koopman founded the orchestra in 1979 gathering a group of internationally renowned baroque specialists who meet up several times a year and work together to prepare and perform new work. Lonquich is one of those few pianists as comfortable – and as successful – performing as a soloist as he is as a chamber musician live and in recordings. His repertoire ranges from

GENDER BENDER FESTIVAL 27 Oct-3 Nov Gender Bender is an annual international festival that introduces the Italian public to the new imagery related to gender identity, sexual orientation and body representation stemming from contemporary culture. The programme offers a series of events ranging from film showings, to theatrical productions and dance performances, visual arts exhibitions, installations, round tables and conferences, live concerts and performances by musicians as well as clubbing events. It is produced in collaboration with the GAM/Modern Art Gallery of Bologna, the Bologna Film Library, and the Music and Drama Department of Bologna University, whose venues host specific parts of the programme. FESTIVAL VERDI 1-28 Oct Rigoletto, La Battaglia di Legnano and a concert dedicated to the music of Verdi have been chosen this year to celebrate the composer in his native Parma during the month of his birth. This year the festival is also an opportunity to support the public in the aftermath of the destructive earthquake earlier this year and to welcome as many people possible to this wounded land. The Rigoletto that has been chosen is the 1987 production by the Teatro Regio di Parma directed by Pier Luigi Samaritani, and today revisited by Elisabetta Brusa. The cast stars Leo Nucci, Desirée Rancatore, Michele Pertusi and Jessica Pratt conducted by Daniel Oren. (Performances on

ROMAEUROPA FESTIVAL 2012 26 Sept-25 Nov This year the festival’s subtitle is “All that we can do” which – as organisers point out – is an exhortation to each of us. This interesting arts festival offers creative experiences, visions and influences of artists which can inspire us and help us understand and interpret our time. The programme has a pluralistic vision offering diverse paths and experiences. There are many big names on the two-month calendar that is especially tantalising for dance enthusiasts. Some that stand out are those of Bill T. Jones, Akram Khan, Sasha Waltz, Batsheva, Constanza Macras. But there are also lots of lesser known names as the festival stays true to its mission of promoting new (and possibly iconoclastic) talents and focusing on new creative idioms. There is a fair amount of theatre and drama featuring the likes of William Kentridge and Fanny Ardant. There is lots of experimental music, a special tribute to John Cage with a series of events that question how current his research is and especially, how much longer his way of thinking will continue to influence contemporary artists. FOTOGRAFIA FESTIVAL INTERNAZIONALE DI ROMA 20 Sept-28 Oct “Work” is the theme of this edition of FotoGrafia – Rome’s International Festival of Photography and it weaves its way through the many events that make up this increasingly prestigious event. The festival’s international jury, headed by Marco Delogu who is also the artistic director of the festival, has selected a range of projects including the finalist photographers and the winner whose works will be exhibited alongside exhibitions by famous international photographers and photoreporters. The festival also stays close to its original mission to provide a launch pad for emerging talents and to promote contemporary photography in all of its forms. The complex programme includes exhibitions, book signings, lectures and workshops. TORINODANZA 12 Sept-24 Nov The 2012 programme of this important dance festival provides an all-round panorama of the generations and geographies of choreographic creation, mixing the energy of youthful language with the talent of great choreographers who have never been guests of Torinodanza before. The calendar includes the second step of a long-term joint project with Philippe Decouflé who presents a selection of his best work. Other prestigious guests are Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, Hofesh Shechter, Alexander Ekman and Crystal Pite. The vision of the future that characterises this year’s Torinodanza is best expressed in the “Focus Domani” section that works for a young audience, but also works with young performers. It foresees sweeping productions that allow parents and their children to enjoy the same work (as in the case of La linea d’ombra, created for Torinodanza by Virgilio Sieni). The other two works of the section feature Carlotta Sagna and Phia Menard. The latter has created two similar works, capable of making objects dance, addressing an audience of children and of adults

BIENNALE MUSICA 6-13 Oct One of the many branches of the important arts event represented by the Venice Biennale, the 56th International Festival of Contemporary Music, headed by new director Ivan Fedele, is entitled +ExTREME- and it focuses on the musical minimalisms and “maximalisms” of our time. Spread out over eight intense days, the festival features three events per day offering the public 51 cuttingedge works, including 28 world premieres. During the festival, composer Pierre Boulez will be awarded the “Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement”, and the young Italian chamber music ensemble the “Quartetto Promoteo” will receive the “Silver Lion”, a prize conferred by the Biennale to new musical groups. THEATRE JACOB TV THE NEWS 16 Oct The classical music multimedia compositions by JacobTV - aka Jacob ter Veldhuis have been compared to Andy Warhol’s pop art, and are acclaimed as one of the most interesting new products in the contemporary art panorama. This production comes to life as a collaboration between the Dutch embassy, the Musica per Roma Foundation and the Roma Jazz Festival. In speaking about his work, JacobTV explains he wanted to create an opera about news, media, politics, social scenes, the Third World, about populism, celebrities, about this whole world of media that is now a worldwide roller coaster of so-called news. DANCE REGGIO EMILIA DADA MASILO 30-31 Oct In Swan Lake, choreography by Dada Masilo. Hailed as South Africa’s dance revelation when she won an important dance award in 2008, Dada Masilo is a diminutive dancer with a huge stage presence who seems to be intent on unpacking the messages and conventions of ballet’s classic works. After an interesting Romeo and Juliet, followed by Carmen, in 2010 she created this Swan Lake, which is still creating ripples. In her reworking of the world’s most danced and most famous ballet, her original cast of swan women and men tell the tragic tale of Odette, Siegfried and Odile – the eternal love triangle. But nothing about this story is quite what it seems and perhaps the most telling thing about it is that gender is rendered superfluous. One of Masilo’s primary concerns is gender and the roles we play in society. As the tale of the trio of lovers unfolds the choreography is overlaid with a distinctive African feel. There’s a meeting to talk “Ilobolo” (Ilobolo is the money or the cattle paid to the parents of the bride as an appreciation sign to the new parents-in-law for taking care of the daughter), the dance steps take the precision of the ballet and subvert them into fluid, sensual steps that echo an array of African dance varieties – from “pantsula” to gumboot dancing. Fresh and funny, with Masilo’s trademark irreverence, her version of Swan Lake delights those who welcome an update of dance’s language, but are also appreciated by ballet lovers. Their shows mix live music, dance and video with theatrical performance. In Here/After Macras explores agoraphobia – the fear of public and vast spaces as well as of crowds and she weaves its manifestations such as hyperventilation, panic attacks, dizziness and disorientation into her choreography posing the question: “does everyday life in a metropolis pose a threat to the people?”. Each of the five protagonists – three women and two men of different nationalities – repeat

and environmental concerns. Birds with Skymirrors is a multi-layered work that focuses on the subject of oceanic pollution and climate change. It includes film footage, sounds, and light design that add up to a passionate cry for and from a beautiful wilderness. First presented to the vaster public at the Edinburgh international festival, the images created by MAU, Ponifasio’s New Zealand-based company, are physically extraordinary and imaginatively charged, embracing a global view of the world and our place in it. His performance is neither strictly dance nor theatre. The stylised action on stage is executed with astonishing precision by performers drawn from mostly non-dance and non-theatre backgrounds. SASHA WALTZ & GUESTS 10-11 Oct In Travelogue/Twenty to Eight, choreography by Sasha Waltz. Having studied in New York in the 1980s, the German choreographer Sasha Waltz returned to Europe to collaborate with other choreographers, artists and musicians. In 1993 she was artist in residence at Kunstlerhaus Bethanien in Berlin. Here she did short working sessions with different musicians, dancers and visual artists, and this resulted in presentations that are the material for her first major choreography: Travelogue 1: Twenty to eight. She subsequently completed the Travelogue trilogy, which set her name in stone in the panorama of contemporary dance. The starting point for Twenty to eight is the kitchen. Here, five people meet and the location acts as a mirror in which rituals, habits and behavior patterns can be observed and reflected as they truly are. Celebrating the company’s 30th anniversary, the works by this ensemble which has become an icon of contemporary dance, include Story/Time, which was inspired by music of John Cage as well as a selection of new and reconstructed works set to classical music and a group of early avant-garde works. The first part includes two works set to classical music scores performed live by string ensembles. They are the 1989 classic of modern dance D-man in the waters, and the 2000 Spent Days Out Yonder, an abstract meditation on music by Mozart. The programme concludes with the 1978 work by Arnie Zane titled Continuous Replay which has been readapted with “structured improvisations” to show what happens when “the exactness of form is brought face to face with unbridled energy and movement”. OPERA OPERA NOTES After last season’s production of Parsifal the Teatro Regio in Turin now presents Der fliegende Holländer by Wagner, with bass-baritone Mark S. Doss and the Canadian soprano Adrianne Pieczonka who comes from singing the same part at Bayreuth this summer. The director is Willy Decker and the stage set consists of just a few items such as ropes and some chairs, all dominated by a gigantic white door. This version is the one-act original version by Wagner. S. Cecilia’s season opens with Quattro Pezzi Sacri by Verdi, four compositions that make up a unified whole but which were written separately over a period of ten years. They reflect Verdi’s spirituality which changed and matured towards the end of his life. Il Teatro Regio di Torino inaugura la stagione 2012-13 con Der fliegende Holländer di Richard Wagner (12-21 ottobre) diretta da Giancarlo Noseda, con il basso-baritono afroamericano Mark S. Doss nel ruolo del protagonista maschile, che torna al Teatro Regio dopo il Parsifal della scorsa stagione, e con il soprano canadese Adrianne Pieczonka, che sarà l’interprete femminile principale dopo averla sostenuta quest’estate a Bayreuth. La regia sarà di Willy Decker (ripresa da Stefan Heinrichs) che ha concepito una scena fatta di pochi elementi (corde, alcune sedie) ma dominata da una gigantesca porta bianca che rappresenta il confine tra la dimensione terrena e quella soprannaturale. Der fliegende Holländer è la quarta opera di Wagner ma la prima a manifestare l’estetica del compositore in una forma matura. Fu rappresentata a Dresda nel 1843, per poi essere sottoposta a diverse revisioni nel corso degli anni, fino a giungere a quella considerata definitiva del 1860; questa versione è in tre atti ed è quella che si rappresenta solitamente, a Torino sarà però eseguita in un atto unico (due ore e mezza di durata) com’era nel progetto originario di Wagner. La stagione di musica sinfonica dell’Accademia Nazionale di S. Cecilia si apre con Quattro Pezzi Sacri di Giuseppe Verdi (13, 14 e 15 ottobre) diretti da Antonio Pappano e cantati dal Coro dell’Accademia. Sono quattro composizioni unite insieme ma concepite e composte da Verdi ciascuna in modo autonomo nell’arco del decennio dal 1889 al 1897: Ave Maria, Te Deum, Stabat Mater e Laudi alla Vergine Maria sui primi versi della preghiera che S. Bernardo rivolge alla Madonna nel Canto xxxIII del Paradiso di Dante Alighieri. I Quattro Pezzi Sacri sono espressione di una religiosità che Verdi ha rivelato in maniera chiara nella maturità artistica e alla fine della sua vita con una sorta di conversione spirituale: la visione di un Dio tremendo, giudice severo che punisce il peccatore, viene superata a favore di una che propone invece un Dio misericordioso e clemente che perdona e dimentica il male commesso e offre la possibilità di credere in un mondo ultraterreno, felice e beato, a cui l’uomo giungerà libero e purificato dalle sofferenze dopo la morte. TECHNOTOWN Technotown in Villa Torlonia offers a space dedicated to new technologies, especially designed for children aged eight and older. It is divided into seven rooms, which give young participants the chance to learn how to interact with sophisticated technologies and media through creative and funny games. Sbong! is a virtual revisiting of Pong, a videogame from the 1970s. This interactive installation is an exciting competition with a virtual ball. Adventures in Three Dimensions consist of three short movies in 3D, which guide children on a journey to the centre of the earth to discover how it was formed and its place in the solar system. A journey into space allows kids to pilot a spaceship in thrilling three dimensional missions. ScultoRobot is a robot, that reproduces each participant’s face in 3D and then turns it into a sculpture in polystyrene. See the Music is a room where kids learn how to listen to music and how to play together in harmony. In Materials of the Future children discover innovative materials, such as waterrepellent fabrics, metals and visco-elastic foams. With the support of a magnifier, children experiment and examine futuristic technological material.
