NIGERIA OPENS EMBASSY TO THE HOLY SEE Nigeria's first resident ambassador to the Holy See, Francis Okeke, talks to Wanted in Rome about some of the reasons for his country's new mission
O
rganising the celebrations surrounding the consistory for your country’s new cardinal cannot be easy. If you are a new ambassador, if you are opening your country’s first mission to the Holy See and if you are also without an official residence, the task must be doubly challenging. But Nigeria’s first resident ambassador to the Holy See, Francis Okeke, seemed relaxed and undaunted the week before the consistory of Cardinal John Onaiyekan at the end of November. “I have plenty of help and support from other ambassadors to the Holy See,” he said, “as well from my own embassy to Italy. I just hope there is enough room for everyone we have invited to the reception at the Urbaniana.” The cardinal chose the Pontifical Urbaniana University because that was where he studied during his student years in Rome, explains Okeke. Nigeria’s first ambassador to the Holy See was one of 88 appointed in June 2012 by the country’s president, Goodluck Jonathan, in a new drive to strengthen Nigeria’s place and image abroad. Although Nigeria has had diplomatic relations with the Vatican for over three decades, they have been handled by the Spanish embassy to the Holy See. Now with three cardinals, over 30 million baptised Catholics – or nearly half of all Christians in Nigeria – as well as an ever increasing number of Nigerian priests serving in under-staffed parishes in the industrialised world, it was clearly an important place to open an embassy. Okeke is not a career diplomat and he has unusual qualifications for the job. By profession he is a gynaecologist and obstetrician; he teaches and runs a private clinic in his home city of Enugu in the south-east of the country. It is not often the Vatican has an accredited ambassador who is expert on two fundamental problems of the developing world, the population explosion and the role of women in society. In most of Nigeria, excluding the Muslim north, says Okeke, women have as much freedom as in many countries in the developed world. However the real problem, he maintains, is still access to education. Fifty per cent of the population may now live in cities, but that still leaves 50 per cent living in rural areas where physical access is difficult because of bad roads and public transport, and where education and health care are still very inadequate. Solve the problem of better education for women, he says, and you will eventually have smaller families and better healthcare for children, a policy that sounds perfectly in line with the Vatican’s own teaching. However in his first few months as ambassador to the Holy See his time has been overshadowed by another problem. “I have had to answer a large number of questions on terrorism since I arrived,” he says somewhat ruefully. This is hardly surprisingly since attacks on churches (and not only Roman Catholic ones) in Nigeria have been the main focus of news coming out of the country recently. Cardinal Onaiyekan's own diocese was involved when the Muslim terrorist group Boko Haram targeted a church in Abuja on Wanted in Rome 9 January 2013
Ambassador Okeke presented his credentials to Pope Benedict XVI in November.
Christmas Day 2011, killing 35. Three more attacks against churches followed only a few weeks later, this time in the north of the country. Okeke says that because this sort of fundamentalist Muslim terrorism – largely inspired from abroad – is new to Nigeria, the government is still seeking ways to handle it. However a decline in attacks against churches in recent months may indicate that the policies of police and military are working. This is one area where he differs from the new cardinal, who thinks that the government should be doing more. However they both agree that interfaith dialogue between Christian and Muslim leaders is of vital importance to prevent terrorists playing on religious divisions, particularly in the largely Muslim north. “The vast majority of Nigerians, whether Christians or Muslims, are honest and law-abiding, and terrorism really is not typical of the country,” says Okeke. During his time in Rome, he would like to see an improvement in human rights in Nigeria, better education, a more efficient use of its human and natural resources and the success of inter-faith dialogue. As a Roman Catholic he is worried by the increase of Pentecostal sects in his country and says that this is something that the Church will have to address if it is not to lose its younger following. And just as many of its doctors and nurses have gone abroad to work, now it is the turn of the country’s priests. Asked how many Nigerian priests there are in Italy, Okeke says that he has no official figures but that judging by the 300 or so who attended a meeting he had in Rome recently there are probably many more than he thought. Okeke stresses the contribution European missionaries – first the French and then the Irish – made to education, health and moral standards in preindependence Nigeria. He acknowledges the role of Irish missionaries in particular and the strong links with Ireland. “The patron saint of Nigeria is St Patrick and my father was called Patrick,” he says. But now countries in the western world, where there is a chronic lack of religious vocations, are calling on Nigerians for help. Nigeria has about 11,000 seminarians, and Bigard seminary in Enugu state with its 775 students is the largest in Africa. Many of its priests come to Rome for graduate studies, mainly at the Urbaniana, following in the steps of the country’s most famous cardinal, Francis Arinze. But there is no central place in Rome along the lines of the Irish, Scots, English or North American colleges for them to live. “Maybe now is the time to have such a place,” says Okeke. And then with a twinkle in his eye he concludes, “Perhaps in the four years that I am here this is one of the things we could achieve.” Mary Wilsey * Okeke’s father Patrick taught alongside Blessed Michael Iwene Tanzi, Nigeria’s first candidate for sainthood who was beatified by Blessed Pope John Paul II in 1998. He also taught Cardinal Francis Arize, who later became one of his good friends.

Rebuilding took place under Maxentius, then Onorius and Belisarius; as the Barbarian threat grew, the wall doubled in height to meet it. After the Barbarians had come and gone, next came the Saracens. To counter their invasion early mediaeval Pope Leo IV extended the wall to include St Peter’s, the new stretch taking the name Leonine. This and other sections underwent further fortification centuries later under Pope Pius IV, at least till the money gave out. On a more day-to-day level the walls also served to combat tax evasion. a solo exhibition by the representative South African photographer, Pieter Hugo. This new series of photographs (2011 – 2012) consists of nearly 100 close-up portraits of the artist and his friends, all of whom come from South Africa or have made it their home. Through a digital process of converting colour images to black and white while manipulating the colour channels, Hugo emphasises the pigment (melanin) in his sitters’ skins so they appear heavily marked by blemishes and sun damage. These images denounce the contradictions of racial distinctions based on skin colour; discriminations that, from Hugo’s point of view, remain even in hell. 15.3019.30. Extraspazio, Via S. SHAY FRISCH CAMPO 100535 B/N 9 Oct-27 Jan The Isreali-born artist and industrial designer Shay Frisch Peri is known for his electrical and dramatic installations. His site specific works illuminate the space using modules with a measured light source that creates energy fields to infuse ever-moving shapes. All of his works are location sensitive and require an understanding of each individual space to express the appropriate proportion of light required. Campo, meaning “field” in Italian, is the title of all of the artist’s work and refers to electrical fields. Each module is then classified with its identification mark, drawn from the sum of components to produce the work. Lastly, the title is followed by a letter indicating its colour, N for nero and B for bianco.

LUIGI ONTANI ANDERSENNOSOGNO 22 Nov-24 Feb As he did on other occasions in the past, but perhaps never quite on this scale, Luigi Ontani has transformed and transfigured an existing site, Rome’s Hendrik Christian Andersen Museum, into its own “Gesamtkunstwerk” exhibition, AnderSennoSogno. There are striking contrasts, but also parallels, between the work of Ontani and that of Andersen, a Rome-based Norwegian-American sculptor, painter, utopian urban planner, and friend of Henry James. Ontani was fascinated by the idea of using Andersen’s wildly monumental sculptural figures displayed in the ground floor as bearers of his polychrome masks manufactured by Balinese artisans (see cover of this edition of Wanted in Rome ). A multi-sensory element is added by sound interventions specially created for each mask by American composer and performer Charlemagne Palestine. In the adjacent gallery are two more overtly theatrical works among Andersen’s polychrome mixed-media sculptures. The apartment on the first floor houses 47 works by Ontani from 1963 to the present, some never exhibited before, made in a wide range of techniques, materials, and sizes (minuscule to quite large), from hand-tinted photographs to cardboard cut-out figures, coloured crayons, drawings, watercolours, photographic performance pieces and tableaux-vivants whose subjects are from western and eastern cultures, a projected shadow theatre, and more. Ontani is a protean artist, not only because he works in many different media, but also in the sense that his face and body appear in diverse, often metamorphic ways, in almost all his works. He could be seen as a pioneer of the ‘mash-up’, in rather the same way as James Joyce’s portmanteau words in Finnegans Wake. And one could glimpse Ontani’s influence in the work of later practitioners such as Peter Greenaway or Jeff Koons. He is not the first among contemporary Italian practitioners whose relation to Asia was more than occasional; one could mention Boetti and Afghanistan, Pasolini and Yemen, Iran, India. Ontani’s interest in Indian and South East Asian culture, myth and art goes back a long way. Yet there is also something Mediterranean about his work. The lineage includes Greek and Etruscan polychrome sculptures, Mannerism and Baroque (their theatricality and use of mixed materials), Surrealism, Duchamp’s androgynous alter ego. But there is also a distinctly Italian flavour in his work; Commedia dell’Arte and popular puppet theatre, the paintings and writings of Savinio and De Chirico, his fellow countryman Fellini; and among his contemporaries in Rome, the theatricality and excess of Carmelo Bene. Although AnderSennoSogno presents nearly 50 years of Ontani’s work, the exhibition is not intended as a retrospective, but rather as a synchronic, mesmerising, labyrinthine journey. Jacopo Benci During the Ontani exhibition, the museum will be accessible only for 45-minute visits, Tues to Sun, on the hour every hour starting at 10.00 and finishing at 18.00. Given the fragility of the works, only 15 people are permitted at once accompanied by a guide. Mon closed. Booking is strongly recommended. The show comprises about 100 works – both by Klee and other Italian and foreign artists such as Kandinsky, Moholy Nagy, Max Bill, Albers, Licini, Soldati, Perilli and Novelli – and examines the influence of Italian culture and landscapes on the artist’s work. WILLIAM KENTRIDGE VERTICAL THINKING 17 Nov-3 Mar This exhibition rotates around the installation The Refusal of Time, produced on the occasion of Documenta 13 in Kassel and presented in Italy for the first time at MAXXI. Reconfigured for the spaces of the museum’s Gallery 5, the installation is made up of music, images and Chinese shadows, with a pulsing Leonardesque machine at the centre. The Refusal of Time was born out of a long-term reflection on the concept of time developed by William Kentridge together with the physicist and scientific historian Peter L. Gallison and has been realised in collaboration with the composer Philip Miller and with Catherine Meyburgh for the video processing and editing. Dancer and choreographer Dada Masilo worked on the choreographies. The work proposes a universal reflection on time and its many metaphors. 11.00-19.00, Sat 11.00-22.00, Mon closed. Museum of Natural History in New York, this exhibition documents the hazardous journey undertaken by merchants, pilgrims and soldiers more than 2,000 years ago across the mountains and deserts of central Asia to trade in luxury goods, to unearth sacred texts and to encounter and dominate distant peoples. A unique section produced exclusively for the Italian explores the relationship between certain Italian cities, particularly Venice and Genoa, and the Far East in the final centuries of the Middle Ages. 10.00-20.00, Fri and Sat 10.00-22.30, Mon closed. Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Via Nazionale 194, tel. 0639967500, www.palazzoesposizioni.it. L’ITALIA DI LE CORBUSIER 18 Oct-17 Feb This exhibition illustrates the significance and the role played by Italy in Le Corbusier’s artistic training and architectural thinking. Following a chronological and thematic journey, it traces the changes in points of view and interests from which the artist – painter, architect and sculptor – examined Italian culture over the course of his life. It highlights the years of his youth in which he travelled to Italy to study art and the Roman civilisation. The exhibition features the two most important projects that Le Corbusier worked on in Italy after the war: the new hospital in Venice and the Olivetti Electronic Calculation Centre at Rho, both left unbuilt due to the architect’s death in 1965. 11.00-19.00, Sat 11.00-22.00, Mon closed. FESTIVAL DELLE SCIENZE 17-20 Jan “Happiness” is the theme chosen for the 2013 edition of Rome’s Science Festival. The concept is introduced by a quote from Nathaniel Hawthorne: “Happiness is a butterfly, which, when pursued, is always beyond our grasp, but which, if you will sit down quietly, may alight upon you”. This is a central concept in philosophy and psychology, but what can science tell us about happiness? Well, lots it appears, thanks to studies in disciplines as diverse as neuroscience, biology, anthropology and sociology. What kind of behaviour leads us to happiness? What triggers happiness in our brain? What does happiness mean to different cultures? Do animals feel happiness? Can happiness be placed at the centre of our political decisions? The eighth edition of Rome’s Science Festival offers a lineup of debates, performances and readings conducted by high profile participants such as Amartya Sen, Darrin McMahon, Paul
Bloom and David Linden. Auditorium Parco della Musica, Viale P. de Coubertin, tel. 0680241281, www.auditorium.com. EQUILIBRIO FESTIVAL DELLA NUOVA DANZA 2-27 Feb In its ninth edition, this cutting-edge dance festival is again headed by acclaimed choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. As always it offers a panorama of contemporary dance, hosting both emerging artists as well as internationally renowned names. During the festival the “Premio Equilibrio Roma” will be awarded to a new talent and to the best performer. The theme chosen for 2013 is “Inevitability”: the inevitability of aging and mortality, the inevitability of oblivion; the inevitability of devastation in war, the inevitability of tenderness, of conflict, of love... Some big names include superstar ballerina Silvie Guillem in 6000 miles Away that focuses on the inevitable passing of time; Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui who presents Puz/zle which highlights the inevitable recurrence of certain events in history, Belgian choreographer Vim Vandekeybus who focuses on memory and the inevitability of oblivion. A new project by Gaia Saitta with Julie Anne Stanzak and Hervé Guerrisi centres on the inevitability of fear and desire, and a performance by the Tunisian brothers Ali and Hèdi Thabet illustrates the inevitability of cultural diversity. OPERA NOTES The Teatro Massimo in Palermo opens its season with Wagner’s Das Rheingold conducted by Pietari Inkinen and directed by Graham Vick. It is part of an ambitious project by the opera house to stage the whole Ring Cycle for the first time — and all in one season — to mark the bicentenary of Wagner’s birth. All four works in the Ring Cycle will be conducted by Pietari Inkinen (an up-and-coming conductor who is also a violinist) and directed by Graham Vick (who has already worked at the Massimo). The Teatro Comunale in Bologna opens with Macbeth by Verdi in a new production conducted by Roberto Abbado and directed by Robert Wilson. Although Bologna’s opera theatre was the first to stage Wagner’s music in Italy with Lohengrin it opens the bicentenary of the birth of the two composers with a work by Verdi. The main characters are sung by Dario Solari (Macbeth) and Jennifer Larmore (Lady Macbeth) who are taking on complex and difficult Verdi roles after much belcanto and Rossini. The Thabet brothers from Tunisia – artists with roots in dance, the theatre and circus – have jointly conceived and choreographed a unique journey (rayah means journey), an immersion in Sufi music in which the lead roles are played by bodies, the human voice and the rhythm of percussions. BOLOGNA LA CLASSIQUE MOSCOW BALLET 11 Jan In Swan Lake, choreography by Petipa. The Moscow Ballet of Classical Choreography “La Classique” was founded in 1990 by its current director Elik Melikov. Its mission is to tour the world showcasing Russian classical ballet. The dancers themselves are selected from leading ballet companies such as the Bolshoi, the Kirov and Ballet Theatres of Kiev, Odessa, Tbilisi, Perm. The level of the corps de ballet and of the leading dancers themselves is high. The problem lies in the productions: most often the music score is recorded, sets and costumes can be worse for wear, and performances are continuously adapted to different stages and situations. The great Russian balletic tradition is all too often betrayed by circumstance and commercial diktats. Teatro Europauditorium, tel. 051372540, www.teatroeuropa.it.
BOLZANO DECONSTRUCTIONS DANCE COMPANY 22 Jan In Open, choreography by Daniel Ezralow. Eight excellent dancers, each one with a different talent and specialty, celebrate Ezralow’s long career as a choreographer and theatrical innovator. This performance, made up of a mix of genres and excerpts from some of Ezralow’s best works, is a dance showcase ranging from classical to contemporary, from athletics to street dance – all highlighted by video projections and clever lighting. Teatro Comunale, tel. 0471053800, www.teatro-bolzano.it. Also in Milan on 24-27 Jan at Teatro Arcimboldi, tel. 02641142212.
MILAN SOSTA PALMIZI ASSOCIATION 27-28 Jan In Alma, choreography by Giorgio Rossi. now resides in the Tuscan town of Cortona. Besides producing works by Raffaella Giordano and Giorgio Rossi‚ it also produces the work of other contemporary artists in the fields of theatre and dance. Created in 2004, Alma is a multidisciplinary performance with texts by Neruda, Pavese and Alda Merini. Pim Off, tel. 0254102612, www.pimoff.it.
ROME BALLETTO DEL TEATRO DELL’OPERA 9-14 Feb In Giselle, choreography by Patrice Bart from Coralli/Perrot. This is a traditional and straightforward staging of the enduring classic Giselle, with choreography based on the 1841 original version of Jean Coralli and Jules Perrot and its subsequent adaptation by Marius Petipa. Created for the Rome company by Patrice Bart, it boasts exquisite staging, understanding and respect of the Romantic ballet style. However it demands technical excellency and emotionally powerful performances by the cast. Whether the Rome corps de ballet is up to it remains to be seen. Teatro dell’Opera, Piazza B. Gigli, tel. 0648160, www.operaroma.it. SYLVIE GUILLEM 3 Feb In 6000 miles away, choreography by William Forsythe, Jiri Kilian, Mats Ek. Some of the biggest names in dance come together for this show tailored to fit the wonderful form of superstar ballerina Silvie Guillem. The show is named for Japan, hit by disaster while Guillem was preparing the show – an extra fundraising performance being added to the sold-out premiere run at Sadler’s Wells. It comprises works by three great choreographers of our time: Rearray by William Forsythe, Bye by Swedish choreographer Mats Ek (both these works especially created for the occasion), and finally a revival of Jiri Kylian’s 27’52”. Very promising on paper, but critics agree: a disappointing evening that should have been an ultimate celebration of the beauty of dance but that has yielded drab, dreary and inconsequential results. Auditorium Parco della Musica for the Festival Equilibrio. Info and booking tel. 068024281, www.auditorium.com.
EKO DANCE PROJECT 10 Jan In La Bella… Giselle, choreography by Mats Ek and Pompea Santoro. The Eko Dance International Project is directed by the Swedish choreographer Mats Ek’s former muse, the dancer Pompea Santoro who has expressed her intention to focus on social themes. She has chosen to showcase extracts from two of Ek’s most famous works: La Bella Addormentata in which the protagonist’s slumber is transformed into the oblivion of drug dependence; and Giselle set in a psychiatric asylum for depressed and violated young girls. Teatro Astra, tel. 0115634352, www.fondazionetpe.it. MIAMI CONTEMPORARY DANCE COMPANY 30-31 Jan In Rooms of Passion and Suspicion and Not In My Name, choreography by Paolo Mohovich and Ray Sullivan. Rooms of Passion and Suspicion is a new work by Mohovich created for the Miami company. It is structured like a movie set divided into three different parts that correspond to three imaginary rooms where different situations come to life. Not In My Name is Sullivan’s new choreography about holy war and acts of man in God’s name, with a newly commissioned score by NY composer Kevin Keller, and costumes and sets by acclaimed Chilean designer Jorge Gallardo. Teatro Astra, tel. 0115634352, www.fondazionetpe.it.
THEATRE NON SI UCCIDONO COSI’ ANCHE I CAVALLI 3-13 Jan By Horace McCoy, directed by Gigi Dall’Aglio, in collaboration with Michela Lucenti’s Balletto Civile. The play is an adaption of McCoy’s best-known novel They shoot horses, don’t they?, after the Academy Award-nominated film directed by Sydney Pollack starring Jane Fonda. The setting for the novel is a shabby ballroom, perched over the Pacific Ocean on the Santa Monica Pier, near Los Angeles. The protagonists, (both aspiring cinema extras), decide to enter a marathon dance contest, believing the contest may be a way to get noticed by studio producers or movie stars. The novel was written in 1935, at the height of the dance marathon craze. Dance endurance contests attracted people to compete to achieve a type of cheap celebrity or monetary prizes. Along with The Grapes of Wrath, this stunning portrait of poverty and powerlessness is considered one of the most convincing – and heartbreaking – fictional portraits of America during the Great Depression. € This pizzeria is also nicknamed “L’Obitorio” (the morgue in English) because its tables are covered with slabs of marble. The pizza is thin, Roman style, and good. Even fried appetisers (fiori di zucca and supplì) are not bad. Prices are very reasonable in relation to the quality and quantity of food. The atmosphere is chaotic, but it can also be fun. The only real drawback is the queue if you arrive at rush hour (around 21.00) especially on weekends.
