LOOKING FOR A NEW POPE

uring the week between the announcement of Pope Benedict’s resignation and his departure for Castel Gandolfo on 28 February, the pope and some of his cardinals were on their Lenten retreat. This is an annual time of prayer and reflection during the lead-up to Easter. Each year the pope chooses an important figure to lead the Vatican’s retreat. This year the invitation went to Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, an Italian from the northern province of Lecco. Ravasi’s retreat and its effect on his audience could well have determined his chances of becoming the next pope. Ravasi is a brilliant biblical scholar, one of the best brains in the Vatican. He is the man behind the highly successful “Courtyard of the Gentiles” project in which prominent Christians discuss with equally prominent non-believers the subject of belief. So far successful meetings have been held in Paris, Bucharest, Tirana and Stockholm. Ravasi, who is president of the Pontifical Council for Culture, is the inspiration behind the Vatican’s decision to have its first-ever pavilion at the Venice Biennale, the world’s most prestigious contemporary art gathering. He is the first appointed member of the Council for the Promotion of the New Evangelisation and seems to pack an audience wherever he speaks. He has famously said that today’s preaching is often boring and irrelevant, and he recommends and uses tweeting to communicate the Christian story. His Twitter accounts are @CardRavasi and @CardRavasi_en. However when he was considered last year for the vacant archbishopric of Milan, Europe’s largest diocese, he didn’t get the job. Instead it went to Cardinal Angelo Scola, largely thanks to his record as the Patriarch of Venice. Milan and Venice are historically seen as steppingstones to the papacy. Both Ravasi and Scola could probably bring new order to the fractious, messy and rumour-ridden Vatican government – or Curia – which is known to have sapped the energy of the outgoing pope. Another European possible, or papabile, is Cardinal Christoph Schönborn, archbishop of Vienna. He, more than most, knows the difficulties facing Roman Catholic clergy today. Lack of vocations, the sex-abuse scandals, excessive centralisation of decision-making in Rome, celibacy, the treatment of gays, the side-lining of women: these are all problems he has been facing in his dealings with the activist Austrian Priests’ Initiative. This vocal and increasingly powerful protest group is similar to other clerical reform movements in Ireland and the United States. Most people will however agree that Europe is no longer the heartland of Christianity. So the cardinal electors (115 at the time of writing but there could be fewer when the conclave opens) may be looking for a pope from Africa, Latin America or the Far East. Two candidates from Africa stand out. Cardinal Peter Turkson from Ghana is popular among prelates and laity alike, is well known in Rome, has been a cardinal for ten years and is head of the important Pontifical Commission for Justice and Peace. Cardinal John Onaiyekan from Nigeria has only been a cardinal for a few months but he has first-hand experience battling military dictatorships and terrorism. Onaiyekan comes from a country with a 5050 per cent Christian/Muslim population and is the only papabile with day-to-day experience of inter-faith dialogue with Muslim leaders. At the end of January, just days before Pope Benedict announced his resignation, Onaiyekan was named a member of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), the department Cardinal Ratzinger headed for so many years before becoming pope in 2005. Wanted in Rome 6 March 2013

With a South American agenda in mind, two candidates stand out. Cardinal Leonardo Sandri, an Argentine of Italian heritage, has a long career in the Vatican but little hands-on knowledge of leading a diocese. Cardinal Odilo Pedro Scherer (a Brazilian of German extraction) is the archbishop of São Paulo, one of the world’s largest dioceses, and has been both a rector of a seminary and a parish priest. He, like Schönborn, knows the day-to-day problems of the clergy and their congregations. The United States has considerable voting influence in the conclave (it is the country with the highest number of votes after Italy – 11 votes to Italy’s 28) but it is short on home-grown candidates. One of its voting cardinals, Cardinal Roger Mahony, archbishop of Los Angeles until 2011, has recently been removed from all his offices by his successor, the new archbishop of LA, for covering up sex abuse cases in the 1980s. Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York is pushing hard for the job, is politically savvy and gets plenty of US media coverage. Boston’s Cardinal Seán O’Malley is a new name that is now circulating. His simple lifestyle is in stark contrast to that of the New York cardinal. A man with knowledge of the Church in both North and Latin America is Cardinal Marc Ouellet, a French Canadian, who has worked in Colombia, is archbishop of Quebec, and has Vatican know-how thanks to his position as head of the Congregation of Bishops and president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America. Turning to the Far East, Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, primate of the Philippines, is a possible pope. Although he is only 55 he has worked in Rome under both Pope John Paul II and Pope Benedict. He has pastoral experience as archbishop of Manila and was made a cardinal a few months ago. Might the cardinals look for someone outside the conclave? The rules allow it, and the resignation of Benedict shows that tradition can be broken. One outsider with the right credentials is the archbishop of Dublin, Diarmuid Martin. He has been fearless in his challenges to the hierarchy in Ireland to root out, clean up and reform. Irish missionaries are responsible for the growth of the Catholic Church in almost every country in the world. Could this then be the right moment for an Irish pope? Mary Wilsey The Conclave 117 cardinals are eligible to vote – those under 80 on the day the papacy becomes vacant – but one has ruled himself out on grounds of ill health, and one, the Scottish Cardinal Keith O'Brien, because of a clerical sex abuse scandal. From the time they go into the conclave to elect the new pope they are forbidden to communicate with the outside world. They stay in the Domus S. Marta to the left of St Peter’s and go to the Sistine Chapel to the right of the basilica each day to vote. On the first day there is one voting session in the afternoon. On each subsequent day there are two sessions in the morning and two in the afternoon. At the end of each morning and afternoon session the ballot papers are burnt. If the smoke from the Sistine Chapel is black it means that the vote is inconclusive; if it is white it means there is a new pope. The pope is elected on a two-thirds majority. If no-one is elected in three days there is a day off for reflection and prayer and then the voting starts again. Key figures The dean of the college of cardinals is Cardinal Angelo Sodano. The dean summons the conclave, presides over it and announces the new pope. Sodano is too old to be an elector. The camerlengo (or chamberlain) is Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone. The chamberlain organises the departure of the old pope (whether funeral or farewell) and then the election of his successor. Bertone is an Italian voting cardinal.

REMEMBERING THE FOSSE ARDEATINE The anniversary of the Fosse Ardeatine massacre takes place each year on 24 March

A

lmost 70 years after the world war two tragedy at the Fosse Ardeatine, fresh flowers still line the graves at the sanctuary there. The mass executions that took place on 24 March 1944 are commemorated every year in the pozzolana quarries and caves of the Ardeatina, close to the Via Appia Antica south of the city walls. This year the Italian president Giorgio Napolitano will conduct the ceremony accompanied by military and political officials. The massacre on 24 March was ordered in reprisal for a bombing in Rome the previous day, carried out by a group of 18 Italian resistance fighters in a strike against the German forces occupying the city. On 23 March a homemade bomb went off inside a municipal rubbish cart on Via Rasella, targeting a column of the Bozen military police attached to the SS on its way from Piazza del Popolo to its quarters in the Viminale, just off Via Nazionale. The bomb was ignited when the patrol turned into the narrow, steep street that runs parallel to Via del Tritone between the Traforo and Palazzo Barberini, just a short walk from the Trevi fountain. Of the 156 men in the German unit, 28 were killed instantly, rising to 32 the next day and subsequently to 42. The SS command in Rome under Herbert Kappler immediately recommended reprisals, which were swiftly approved by the military authorities all the way up to Hitler. Within 24 hours the German command ordered the Ardeatine massacre. The response was rapid and brutal, without the usual posting of notices offering to forgo reprisals if the bombers should give themselves up. Hundreds of innocent victims were rounded up immediately from Regina Coeli prison, from their homes and off the street in an attempt to reach a ten to one ratio for every German killed in the Via Rasella bombing. The innocent victims were a cross section of those living in Rome at the time: about 100 civilians and professionals, military men, factory workers, a Catholic priest and several students, 75 of them Jews. They were of all ages from 15 to 70, and all political opinions, from monarchist army officers to ultra-left wing communists. Some of them came from outside Rome. On 24 March 335 victims were taken in lorries outside the city by SS officers Erich Preibke and Karl Hass, divided into groups of five and shot in the back of the head. When the officers discovered that, by mistake, five too many hostages had been rounded up, they decided to kill them anyway so that word of the massacre should not spread too soon. The caves were then dynamited to seal them off and the bodies left to decay. It was not until more than a year later, after the Allied Liberation of Rome on 4 June 1944, that the caves were reopened and the bodies found. The state of the bodies and the severity of the head wounds made identification difficult. Even today not every victim has been named. The director of the mausoleum, Major Francesco Sardone, confirmed in an interview with Wanted in Rome that nine bodies are still not officially identified, although at last year’s annual commemoration the names of three previously unidentified bodies were announced as a result of DNA testing by the Carabinieri. After the war the site of the massacre was transformed into a museum, national mausoleum and sanctuary dedicated to the martyrs. Today visitors can see some of the 335 tombs and the gap caused by the explosion of the German mine intended to prevent access to the site. Almost all the dead are buried here, although Sardone explained that 12 of the tombs are empty as the families preferred to take the bodies for burial in their own family graves. A plaque on the wall of the cave reads: Wanted in Rome 6 March 2013

The innocent victims buried at the Fosse Ardeatine sanctuary are commemorated each March.

“Here we were brutally killed, victims of a horrible sacrifice. May from our sacrifice rise a better homeland and lasting peace among people.” Three popes, Paul VI, John Paul II and last year Benedict XVI, have been to pray on the site, together with Rome’s chief rabbis. There are other world war two sites in Rome such as the Liberation Museum on Via Tasso, once an apartment complex where Jews and political opponents were tortured and held captive by the Germans. A Holocaust museum is also planned in Villa Torlonia, the former residence of Mussolini and his family, to commemorate the 1,600 Jews from Rome deported to concentration camps in October 1943. The Fosse Ardeatine massacre has left deep scars on the Roman psyche, dividing people still today, mainly on the grounds that the bombers should have known there would be a vicious reprisal. It is a tragedy that has been dramatised in film and music, has been researched in detail and argued over by the political left and right. Even today many people know someone in Rome who has a personal story to tell of the tragedy. In his book The Order Has Been Carried Out, Italian historian Alessandro Portelli relates a series of intimate interviews with family members and neighbours of those killed and partisans who were active in Rome. He argues that “because the attack was carried out in a metropolis and affected many different types of people, the event has a powerful hold over memory and identity.” In a final ironic twist to the story one of its main perpetrators, Erich Priebke, is still living in Rome today. Having fled to Argentina after the war he was tracked down in 1994 and extradited to Rome to stand trial for war crimes. After several appeals he was found guilty in 1998, along with Karl Hass, and condemned to 15 years in prison, reduced to 10 because of his age, and put under house arrest. Priebke, who will be 100 in July this year, lives in the city’s Boccea district. Hass, who is said to have become an agent of the Unites States secret services after the war, died in 2004 in Castel Gandolfo. Their superior, Kappler, was held in prison in Italy for many years, escaped in mysterious circumstances in 1977 and – by then a seriously ill man – died less than a year later of cancer in Germany. Theresa Potenza The mausoleum of the Fosse Ardeatine is open Mon-Fri 08.15-15.15 and Sat-Sun 08.15-16.45. The museum is open Mon-Fri 08.15-15.00, and Sat-Sun 08.15-16.30.

It’s also a good stopping place for anyone going to one of the many exhibitions in the magnificent Bramante cloisters in the nearby church of S. Maria della Pace. Drinks are expensive, but you can sit for as long as you like and take in the beautiful surroundings.

HOlidaY aPartment, near CamPO de’ FiOri. Our apartment is a basement in the Arco degli Acetari, very close to the Campo de’ Fiori market. It is right in the middle of the old city in the loveliest of courtyards. In fact, most picture postcard sellers in Rome feature it together with pictures of the Roman Forum, the Vatican, the Trevi Fountain etc. But you won’t find the address on a Rome map, it’s too small for that. This means it’s not inundated with tourists. It is a spacious studio apartment with a separate kitchen, and a bathroom. Whilst it is ideal for a couple, it can comfortably accommodate four friends, or even a family of up to six. chrislarkman@gmail.com.
