ARCHITECTURE

Andy Devane

VATICAN HONOURS CALATRAVA First Vatican exhibition dedicated to a living architect

T

he work of celebrated Spanish architect, structural engineer, sculptor and painter Santiago Calatrava is the subject of a major exhibition at the Vatican’s Braccio di Carlo Magno, in the south colonnade of St Peter’s Square, until 20 February. Entitled Le Metamorfosi dello spazio, the exhibition offers a comprehensive representation of Calatrava’s diverse artistic oeuvre, juxtaposing marble, bronze and wooden models of his signature architectural projects with his sculpture, paintings and sketches. Given the location of the exhibition, it is perhaps unsurprising that churches and religious-themed art feature highly in the 140 works on show. Among the highlights is Calatrava’s model for the St Nicholas Greek Orthodox church planned for the Ground Zero site in New York, on public display for the first time. The original church was destroyed when Tower 2 of the World Trade Center collapsed on 11 September 2001. Calatrava says his new church, only 17m high, is intended to be “like a powerful flower in the centre of an area with immense dimensions.” Another prominently-displayed piece is a model for his completion project for the Cathedral of St John the Divine, also in New York. Calatrava’s radical but unapproved solution comprised a glassencased biosphere around the nave

of the enormous Episcopalian church, which remains in a permanently unfinished state even though its construction began some 120 years ago. Further on, this elaborate plan is contrasted by the humble, cabin-like design for the Los Angeles Chapel, dedicated to Fr Junípero Serra, a Spanish Franciscan friar sent in 1767 to the missions of the “Baja California”. Calatrava’s simplistic, open-plan design for the new chapel was inspired by the combined reverence for nature and sacred space found in the original hut-church. The walls are designed to rise, open up and spread like the wings of a dove, so making an openair space under what then becomes a hanging roof. Here indeed is the metamorphosis of space seen in action; however, the church has never been built. There is a strong international feel to the exhibition which includes designs for Calatrava’s Puente de la Mujer bridge in Buenos Aires (2001), his Malmö Turning Torso skyscraper (2007), and the 600-m Chicago Spire, which would have been the tallest building in north America had its planned construction not fallen through in 2010. Closer to home, the exhibition features an intricate model of the Città dello Sport di Roma, a grandiose project which began in 2005 and has since foundered. Located in the Rome suburb Tor Vergata, the sports complex

ARCHITECTURE was originally designed for the World Swimming Championships in 2009 and construction work began under the administration of former mayor Walter Veltroni. However the project soon ran out of funds and was abandoned. Now something of a white elephant, efforts are being made to obtain the roughly €500 million necessary to complete the project from private investors. Visitors to the exhibition will probably be surprised to see so many paintings, many of them finished recently, including a pair of giant trees near the entrance, (see the cover of this edition of the magazine), his large crouching figures, and the Genesi della cupola series of ten watercolour sketches which follow the metamorphosis of a Madonna into a church dome, then taken up in the design of church of St Nicholas, displayed opposite. His sculptures include the aluminium Morphing Yellow, the wooden Cascade, and the white alabaster Endless Light. However, while the Vatican has gone to great lengths decorating the prestigious exhibition space with brightly coloured display panels, many of the explanatory labels are placed so low and are so dimly lit that it is difficult to read the titles. Although this is not Calatrava’s first exhibition in Rome (the Scuderie del Quirinale dedicated a show to him in 2007 entitled Dalle forme all’Architettura) it is, significantly, the first time that the Vatican honours a living architect with an exhibition. This follows the success of the Holy See’s inaugural pavilion at the 2013 Venice Biennale. The Vatican’s participation at the Biennale was spearheaded by Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi, the dynamic head of the Pontifical Council for Culture, which is behind Calatrava’s exhibition. The exhibition reflects “the continued opening of the Vatican and the Church to the art of our time,” said Micol Forti, the head curator of contemporary art at the Vatican Museums and curator of the Calatrava show. At the inauguration Forti explained that the title of the show, “The metamorphosis of space”, refers to

Morphing Yellow, aluminium sculpture, 2009.

“the main narrative thread in Calatrava’s work, which is the possibility of defining a new spatial harmony.” Based between Zurich and New York, Calatrava is one of the world’s most distinguished contemporary architects, best known for his distinctive sculptural bridges – often cantilevered or cablestayed and almost always in his signature white – in numerous cities around the world. These include the Samuel Beckett and James Joyce bridges in Dublin, the Alamillo Bridge in Seville, the Jerusalem Chords Bridge, and the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge in Dallas. However, despite being feted around the globe, Calatrava is no stranger to

controversy. The 62-year old architect is famed for cost over-runs and delayed completion of projects. In May 2012 the left-wing Spanish political party Esquerra Unida i Alternativa accused Calatrava of “bleeding Valencia dry” after claiming that the architect had charged some €100m to the financially-strapped regional government of his native city. Calatrava’s design for the Peace Bridge, an elegant 130-m pedestrian bridge in the Canadian city of Calgary, was originally scheduled for completion in autumn 2010 but due to numerous problems, including welding that didn’t comply with Canadian quality standards, it was not opened until spring 2012. Calatrava’s futuristic train station, the World Trade Center Transportation Hub, is currently being built in New York. The extravagant design, which Calatrava described as like “a bird being released from a child’s hand”, has been scaled back to eliminate the opening and closing roof mechanism, over budget and space constraints. It is expected to open in 2015, six years behind schedule, at a cost of $4 billion, twice the original budget. Calatrava’s other projects in Italy include the new state-of-the-art railway station Medio Padana, the only stop on the Milan-Bologna high-speed line. Situated about halfway between Parma and Bologna in northern Italy, the white steel and glass wave-like station was inaugurated in June last year 2013. Calatrava also designed the Ponte della Costituzione over the Grand Canal in Venice. Prior to its 2008 inauguration the arched truss bridge caused disquiet among locals, chiefly over concerns that its modernist-minimalist design was incompatible with the city’s architectural heritage, but it has since become accepted to such an extent that it is referred to locally as the “Calatrava Bridge.” The Vatican exhibition is open every day from 10.00-18.00 except on Wednesdays, when it opens from 14.00-18.00. LEGAL AFFAIRS

A

n article on inheritance may not seem a bright and breezy way to begin the New Year, but having your affairs in order is always a good start. For foreign nationals resident in Italy a final will and testament lodged in your country of origin may not be enough to manage your assets in Italy. According to international law, any fixed assets (i.e. property) or liquid assets (i.e. bank accounts) in Italy fall under Italian law when it comes to the distribution of inheritance. Italian law on succession is grounded on the principle of protecting and continuing family heritage and therefore operates along the lines of forced inheritance. Even if a will is left, the law ensures that the immediate members of the deceased’s family are not deprived of their minimum statutory share of the estate (quota di legittima or successione necessaria). So it is not simply a question of the formalities of drawing up the will but it is also a question of ensuring that the minimum shares granted by law to the various beneficiaries are complied with. This also applies to people residing abroad who have relatives in Italy. If the deceased leaves no surviving spouse or children, the law ensures a share of the estate to ascendants and descendants up to the fourth degree of kinship, i.e. parents, siblings and their descendants, uncles or aunts and their descendants. Generally the following relatives will be entitled to the following minimum statutory shares if a will is in place (see side notes for what happens if there is no will): If the deceased leaves a spouse and one child, then the minimum statutory share is that a third of the estate goes

LEGAL AFFAIRS to the spouse and a third to the child. If the deceased leaves a spouse and more than one child, then the minimum statutory share is that a quarter of the estate goes to the spouse and half in equal shares to the children. If the deceased leaves no spouse but one child, then half of the estate goes to the child. If the deceased leaves no spouse but more than one child, then two thirds of the estate is divided into equal shares for each child. If there is only a spouse and no children, then the spouse is entitled to half the estate and the ascendenti to a quarter. If there are only ascendenti, then a third of the estate is divided between ascendenti or descendenti (in equal parts). If these rules are not followed, excluded parties or those who receive less than the minimum statutory share of the estate can contest the will in the Italian courts. Whatever the provisions in the will, the Italian courts will then re-distribute the assets of the estate in accordance with the above rules. The dichiarazione di successione (declaration of succession) bearing the details of the beneficiaries must be submitted by one of the beneficiaries (but legal advice would be helpful to make sure that everything is done correctly) to the Agenzia delle Entrate within one year of the death of the deceased. Only after the required taxes are paid may the distribution of the assets of the estate proceed. Under Italian law a beneficiary is entitled to estate assets but also becomes subject to the deceased’s debts and liabilities. If the debts exceed the assets a beneficiary has the right to renounce his or her share in the estate to avoid the financial burden. Inheritance claims in Italy are currently subject to two taxes, estate tax and property transfer tax. If the deceased was resident in Italy, Italian estate tax (imposte sulle succes-

sioni) is applied to all the assets of the deceased worldwide. In the case of non-residents, the Italian inheritance tax rate is calculated on the assets located in Italy. The estate tax applies to the entire net value of the estate, including movable and immovable assets. This amount is net of liabilities and all deductible expenses, such as debts of the deceased, medical and funeral expenses. There are different rates that are

applied to each heir according to the degree of kinship to the deceased, as follows: For spouses and children it is four per cent of the estate value, with a taxfree allowance of â‚Ź1 million per beneficiary. For siblings and close relatives (up to fourth degree of kinship) it is six per cent. Each sibling is entitled to a taxfree allowance of â‚Ź100,000. For any other claimant on the estate

LEGAL AFFAIRS it is eight per cent, without a tax-free allowance. When one or more Italian properties are left, the succession is also subject to property transfer taxes, which are three per cent of the property value on record at the ufficio catastale or land registry office. These taxes are the following: 1. Mortgage tax (imposta ipotecaria), that is two per cent of the property value on record or €168 if the property will be used as the beneficiaries’ primary habitation (prima casa). 2. Land registration tax (imposta catastale), that is one per cent of the property value on record or €168 if the property will be the main house (prima casa) of the beneficiary. Although under Italian law an executor to the estate is not required and beneficiaries may claim their share of assets directly, it is advisable to seek the assistance of a lawyer who can help in assuring that you receive what is rightfully yours, that properties are correctly registered in the names of the beneficiaries, and that the taxation on the estate is correct.

DYING WITHOUT A WILL If you die intestate in Italy the estate is distributed according to successione legitima in the following manner : – A surviving spouse with one child - each would receive half. – A surviving spouse with more than one child - spouse one third and the remaining two thirds are split between the children. – Only a single remaining child inherits the total estate. – Only children - estate divided equally. – Spouse and ascendants and descendants - two thirds to the spouse and one third among the ascendants and descendants. – Only ascendants and or descendants. The inheritance is awarded respecting the closeness of kinship, i.e. first parents and brothers and sisters, then aunts and uncles and then cousins. For example if a person dies and their only surviving relatives were an aunt and a cousin, the aunt would inherit because she is third-degree kin but not the cousin who is fourth-degree kin. The state will track beneficiaries up until the sixth degree of kin; if none exists the state is the sole beneficiary of the estate.

WAYS OF MAKING A WILL Under Italian law there are three different ways of making a valid will: ▶ Handwritten will (testamento olografo). This is a document personally handwritten by the person making the will (testator), signed and dated. There is no need for witnesses and there is no need for an attestation clause stating that these are the testator’s wishes. ▶ Formal will (testamento pubblico). This is a document drafted by an Italian notary on the instructions of the testator, read out by the notary to ensure that it complies with the wishes of the testator and signed by the testator in the presence of at least three witnesses. The will is then lodged with the Italian notary. While it provides reassurance that the will does not get lost or disregarded, it involves a cost (notary fees), and its contents are immediately disclosed to third parties (witnesses), who may not keep it confidential. ▶ Secret will (testamento segreto). This is a will drafted or written by the testator and placed in a sealed envelope which is then delivered to an Italian notary. The notary fees are reduced and the contents of the will remain secret until after the death of the testator, when the sealed envelope is opened. In Italy verbal (nuncupative) wills are not accepted as legitimate, even if witnessed, in order to avoid fraudulent claims by people who may have been present at the time of death and claim that the deceased expressed their last wishes to them. 8 January 2014 | Wanted in Rome

BARS BAR NONE, A LOCAL VADEMECUM

Roman bars can be more conducive to conversation than many of their expat counterparts

I

talian bars tend to be much of a muchness. Espresso is a key word that describes not only the coffee. These are rarely places to linger in, let alone engage someone in anything as lengthy as a conversation which, given the rapid turnover, might even constitute a civil offence. Rome’s pubs – whether English, Scottish, Irish or American – should surely do better. These are places for meeting fellow expats, for gleaning useful information and learning your way around your new home. Here you will also find sport, above all football, and in some cases baseball, skating, even poker. However if you want to venture further afield and prefer social contact rather than sport, the six bars described here offer a salutary antidote, watering holes with a difference. First up, conveniently just two streets down from Termini station is Bar Dahlak (look for the sign saying Fantini). Here on any given evening you can hear a dozen or more languages, putting this bar up there with many a language faculty but without any

need for exams or subscriptions. This is largely thanks to a clientele which, being predominantly African is naturally polyglot. A whole range of languages from Amharic to Yoruba, from Akan to Swahili crisscross the two small rooms, together with French, Portuguese and (at least for this linguistically-challenged Anglo-Saxon) enviably fluent Italian. Encouraging the linguistic flow are local part-time professors Peroni and Baffo d’Oro. Keeping the ubiquitous television set at bay is the sweet Congolese high-life music flowing through the not-too-loud loudspeakers. Move away from the city centre to Pigneto – tram 5 or 14, or bus 105 from Termini – and the prices are halved as according to Skinflint’s Law: The less central the district the more favourable the cost. One Bangladeshi bar in Via del Pigneto offers beer at €1.50 a bottle, and a television that alternates

10

Wanted in Rome | 8 January 2014

soap operas from Dhaka with American wrestling and international cricket, with the possibility to retire outside and sit under the shade of, yes, a tree, this being Pigneto, while at the end of the alley rattle Lazio-bound trains. Further down on the corner there is Bar Rosi. On the wall in the inner room are photographs of local faces that, for variety and character, a Renaissance master could not better, with Roman features much in evidence. The wall opposite has a press photo of the same building battered but still standing after an Allied bombing raid in world war two. Being right next to the railway line leading to Termini’s marshalling yards, the area was particularly prone to collateral damage. Leaving history behind, Rosi’s bar also gives the visitor an opportunity to join the local tifoseria romanista. For the price of a beer, the inner room’s television provides a free alternative

to matches in the Olympic Stadium, mostly on Wednesday and Thursday, although Rosi’s son is also a part-time Millwall supporter. For every eventempered observation by the television commentator, there are a dozen less repeatable alternatives on offer from local pundits on your left and right. It is a good chance to brush up on romanesco, the local dialect, and some of its more colourful expressions, particularly when a foul is committed. Or you could also sit outside watching life go by – no extra charge, unlike in Piazza Navona. In the bistro across the street – I Porchettoni der Pigneto – selling porchetta and wine fresh from the Castelli Romani, the semi-cinema size pictures are of locals fleeing the same infamous bombing raid of 19 July 1943 and then of the airborne US bomber Little Chum, which – who knows – may have dropped the offending bomb. Cross the railway bridge and a short walk takes you to Via Fanfulla da Lodi – a contender for Rome’s most beautifully named street; the name actually refers, like in many streets in the area, to a Renaissance warlord or condottiere. At the crossroads with Via Braccio da Montone (the name of another warlord) is Necci bar, an old haunt of Pasolini, the fact again commemorated by a photograph. Pigneto is where he both lived (round the corner on Via Gattomelata) and filmed Accattone, using locals of the area as actors. Fast-forwarding into the present, the place still retains an artistic feel, this combined with excellent service and coffee. Particularly good is the food on offer – a banquet including fresh-baked bignés, cheesecake, strudels, muffins, cornetti, salt or sweet, whole-meal or stuffed. All are homemade in the kitchen behind and served up by, yes, an English cook – Ben Hirst – so proving that what an Italian can do in the kitchen, a Brit can do, if not better, perbacco! – at least

Around noon the café becomes more a restaurant, this segueing later into an enoteca as evening approaches midnight and beyond. (08.00-02.00). The Pasolini theme can be followed up at a rather smaller nook, the modestly named Vecchia Cantina, Via del Pigneto 118. Accompanied by a selection of appropriately pungent cheeses, here the wine comes not only in bottles, but in the much more economical form of vini sfusi. Each aluminium barrel is decorated with a photograph: Puglia’s Vino di Troia with Pasolini in full directorial flow, a young Bernardo Bertolucci standing mesmerised at his side; Sicily’s chthonic Nero d’Avola carries a picture of Pirandello; Falanghina di Beneventano that of Neapolitan playwright Eduardo De Filippo. As in many other locales in the area, the link between wine and literature is strong. In summer one can also sit on the steps outside, for company reminiscent of a sort of mini-Spanish Steps but without the view. An equivalent establishment is Vini e Olii in Circonvallazione Casilina alongside the railway-line, both for local delicacies and wine, here in bottles not barrels, plus a rare opportunity to hear classical music in the back-

ground, a passion of the oste. “The man who’s tired of London is tired of the world,” Samuel Johnson, lexicographer, poet, essayist and keeneyed frequenter of taverns famously observed of his adopted city. Seated two centuries later in or outside any of the bibulous microcosms mentioned above, he might have said the same of Rome, adding maybe a Latin quotation or two for good measure, then pouring another quartino for his listeners.

CARLO SARACENI 1579-1620 UN VENEZIANO TRA ROMA E L’EUROPA 29 Nov-2 March Palazzo di Venezia presents the first major exhibition dedicated to the Venetian painter Carlo Saraceni, who was active in Rome from 1598 until 1619, before returning to Venice where he died in 1620. During Saraceni’s time in Rome his work was much in demand by the era’s most important religious and artistocratic patrons of the arts, and his commissions included the Sala Regia frescoes at the Quirinal Palace. The result of years of work, this retrospective highlights the evolution of the artist’s style as well as his path to international fame and success. The exhibition includes both large and small pieces, works never exhibited and recently restored paintings. Palazzo Venezia, Via del Plebiscito 118, tel. 0669994388. ALICE PASQUINI 28 Nov-23 Jan The exhibition Take Me Anywhere by established Rome street artist Alice Pasquini takes place at the Varsi Gallery, a space dedicated to urban art. Pasquini is known for her giant murals in major international cities such as Sydney, Oslo, Paris, Moscow and Rome but this exhibition is the first to display her works on paper. On her frequent travels the artist carries a sketchbook to document the faces she meets along the way, some of whom later appear in a much larger format on walls. By concentrating on the artist’s sketchbooks, the exhibition sheds light on Pasquini’s working methods and the origins of some of her more famous images. Galleria Varsi, Via di S. Salvatore in Campo 51, tel. 0668309410, www.galleriavarsi.it.

UNA STORIA AMERICANA PHOTOGRAPHS BY GORDON PARKS 5 Dec-16 Feb Palazzo Incontro displays an exhibition of photographs by the US photographer, musician, writer and movie director Gordon Parks (1912-2006) who is best remembered for his photographic articles for Life magazine and as the director of the 1971 film Shaft. Entitled Una storia americana, the exhibition comprises photographs by Parks that deal with poverty, social exclusion, abuse of power and, in particular, racial segregation and prejudice. Through his photographs Parks gave a voice to the people in society who were often the most ignored, as well as documenting leading black cultural icons such as Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali and Martin Luther King. There are over 160 photographs in the exhibition, which was shown in Milan in early 2013 and is the first major European retrospective dedicated to Parks’ photography. Palazzo Incontro, Via dei Prefetti 22, tel. 0697276614, www.fandangoincontro.it. SANTIAGO CALATRAVA 5 Dec-20 Feb The Vatican honours the celebrated Spanish architect, structural engineer, sculptor and painter Santiago Calatrava with a major exhibition at the Braccio di Carlo Magno, to the left of St Peter’s Square. The exhibition features models of Calatrava’s signature projects as well as his geometric portrait paintings, watercolours and sketch books. Among the highlights of the 140 works on show are Calatrava’s models for the St Nicholas Greek Orthodox church at New York’s Ground Zero site, and the Cathedral of St John the Divine, also in New York. Significantly, it is first time that the Vatican honours a living architect with an exhibition. See cover and article page 2. Braccio di Carlo Magno, Piazza S. Pietro. FELICE LEVINI 6 Dec-9 Feb The Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna presents an installation entitled Nord-Est Sud-Ovest by Roman artist Felice Levini in the gallery’s Sala della Guerra. The installation centres around a large cubic structure, which is itself a work of art, inside which the artist has assembled a series of works visible from both inside and outside. Curated by the gallery’s superintendent Maria Vittoria Marini Clarelli and contemporary art critic Achille Bonito Oliva, the installation provides a direct comparison with works from the gallery’s permanent collection, particularly those of the Futurists. KAZUYOSHI NOMACHI LE VIE DEL SACRO 14 Dec-4 May The exhibition Le Vie del Sacro is described as the largest retrospective devoted to Kazuyoshi Nomachi as well as the first time that the work of Japanese photographer has been exhibited in the west. There are about 200 images in the exhibition which is divided into seven sections spanning the photographer’s 40-year career. THE 1970s. ART IN ROME 17 Dec-2 March The work of some 80 Italian and international artists is united in an exhibition celebrating art that was either produced or shown in Rome during the 1970s, a decade that was synonymous in Italy with artistic experimentation and political conflict. The show explores the work of artists that best represent the Rome art scene of that decade, incorporating a variety of schools and styles by artists who were active in movements from Arte Povera to conceptual, minimalist, analytical and narrative art. Among the best known Rome artists in the show are Burri, De Chirico, Twombly, Ontani, Cucchi and Ceccobelli, some of whose work appeared as Wanted in Rome covers in the past. The exhibition also showcases international artists who spent time in Rome during the 1970s, such as Beuys, LeWitt, Gilbert & George and Woodman. Palazzo delle Esposizioni, Via Nazionale 194, tel. 0639967500, www.palazzoesposizioni.it. The installation is the fourth and final chapter in the MAXXI series highlighting advances within contemporary architecture. ERASMUS EFFECT ITALIAN ARCHITECTS ABROAD 6 Dec-6 April This exhibition follows the migratory paths of some of Italy’s architects who gained success and recognition abroad in recent decades. Among the architects it examines are Giacomo Quarenghi in St Petersburg, Lina Bo Bardi in Brazil, Pietro Belluschi in the US, Benedetta Tagliabue in Scotland and Romaldo Giugola in Australia, as well as Renzo Piano who has designed major buildings all over the world. GABRIELE BASILICO PHOTOGRAPHS FROM THE MAXXI COLLECTIONS 28 Nov-30 March The MAXXI pays tribute to the late Milanese photographer Gabriele Basilico (1944-2013), one of Italy’s greatest exponents of architectural photography. The more than 70 photographs from the MAXXI Arte and MAXXI Architettura collections document the museum’s association with Basilico, who photographed the construction of the MAXXI itself. The exhibition acts as both a history of the museum and a biography of Basilico who features in a new documentary film also on show. MAXXI, Museo Nazionale delle Arti del XXI Secolo, Via Guido Reni 4, tel. 0639967350, www.fondazionemaxxi.it.

JORINDE VOIGT 29 Nov-9 March An exhibition by Jorinde Voigt, a German artist belonging to an emerging international contemporary art scene, is entitled Liebe als Passion. Voigt’s installation consists of a new series of 16 large-scale works on paper, inspired by Niklas Luhman’s book Love as Passion. MACRO, Via Nizza 138, tel. 068548274, www.museomacro.org.

STILL SHOWING CLEOPATRA 12 Oct-2 Feb This exhibition is dedicated to the fascinating life of Cleopatra, the last pharaoh of ancient Egypt, and the central role she played in the political events of the era. In particular the relationship between Egypt and the Roman empire is examined, brought to life by the exposition of over 200 historical and artistic pieces including sculptures, mosaics, earthenware, gold and glass. the Mediterranean basin. Augustus was both charismatic and politically astute, and his reign was documented extensively at the time by historians. Along with their writings, the exhibition explores the emperor’s life and career with a selection of statues, portraits and jewellery. Organised in association with Musei Capitolini in Rome, and the Grand Palais and Musée du Louvre in Paris. Scuderie del Quirinale, Via XXIV Maggio 16, tel. 639967500, www.scuderiequirinale.it. ANTONIAZZO ROMANO 1 Nov-2 Feb Palazzo Barberini stages an exhibition of works by Antoniazzo Romano (c.1430–c.1510), an Early Renaissance painter and leading figure of the Roman school during the 15th century. The exhibition illustrates the development and key moments in the artistic career of the important Rome artist who was a contemporary of Piero della Francesca, Domenico Ghirlandaio, Melozzo da Forlì and Perugino. Romano’s sacred work was much in demand from the Vatican, religious communities and noble families, particularly his depictions of the Madonna which were characterised by a similarity to modern females of that period. The 50 works on display on the ground floor of Palazzo Barberini include large religious paintings, altarpieces, panels and decorative frescoes, and reveal how the painter combined Renaissance innovations with the splendour of Mediaeval art. MODIGLIANI, SOUTINE AND THE DAMNED ARTISTS 14 Nov-6 April The Netter collection of more than 120 works by artists such as Modigliani, Soutine, Utrillo, Valadon and Kisling are on display at Palazzo Cipolla after successful shows in Paris and Milan. All of these artists lived and worked in the Montparnasse quarter of Paris at the beginning of the 20th century, a revolutionary period in the history of art. Businessman Jonas Netter (1867 – 1946) was both a patron of the arts and an astute buyer who assembled a stellar collection of works by then-unknown, and often impoverished, artists. The works have not been shown publicly for over 70 years, and curator Marc Restellini says “today they appear almost as if by magic, from another world.” Palazzo Cipolla, Fondazione Roma Museo, Via del Corso 320, tel. 066786209, www.fondazioneromamuseo.it. Cecilia stage the next day. 22 Jan Technically perfect and immaculately austere Maurizio Pollini plays Chopin and Debussy, giving him little scope for his unusually wide repertoire that ranges from Bach to Boulez, from Schubert to Stockhausen. At the end of the month it is the turn of two master conductors, Lorin Maazel and Valery Gergiev. 25, 27, 28 Jan Lorin Maazel, French-American violinist and composer conducts Respighi’s Fontane e Pini di Roma. 1-3 Feb Valery Gergiev conducts Mahler. LE SPECTRE DE LA ROSE LA ROSE MALADE CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA 12 Jan- 9 Feb A combination of two ballets and one opera, all conducted by Daniel Harding. Le Spectre de la Rose was conceived for Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes and for Nijinski in order to fill a gap in 1911 when Nijinsky was still putting the finishing touches to L’Après-midi d’un Faune. La Rose Malade to music by Mahler was choreographed by Roland Petit for the great Russian ballet dancer Maja Plisetskaja. This production of Cavalleria Rustiana by Pietro Mascagni is the Mario Martone version, with the Latvian tenor Aleksandrs Antonenko and the soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska. Teatro alla Scala, Via Filodrammatici 2, www. teatroallascala.org. LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR By Donizetti 7-28 Feb This is a Metropolitan Opera production with Pier Giorgio Morandi conducting and Mary Zimmermann directing. Popular Italian tenor Vittorio Grigolo sings the role of Edgardo, after his success with Rigoletto and La boheme at La Scala last season, and Russian Albina Shagimuratova is Lucia, along with up-and-coming Australian Jessica Pratt in the role she knows well. Teatro alla Scala, Via Filodrammatici 2, www.teatroallascala.org

ROME

L’ENFANT ET LES SORTILÈGES L’HEURE ESPAGNOLE By Ravel 30 Jan- 6 Feb Two one-act operas by Ravel, conducted by Charles Dutoit and directed by Laurent Pelly in a Glyndebourne festival production. Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Teatro Costanzi, Piazza Beniamino Gigli 7, www.operaroma.it. MANON LESCAUT By Puccini 27 Feb-8 March This new production of Puccini’s opera is arousing interest partly be-

cause Riccardo Muti is conducting and his daughter Chiara is directing. Muti needs no introduction and Chiara is no stranger to cinema and theatre audiences in Italy. She also directed Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas at the Caracalla Festival in Rome last summer. But this is her biggest test in one of the top Italian opera houses and with a major operatic work. It is made even more exciting for opera lovers because it marks the Rome debut of Russian-Austrian soprano Anna Netrebko in the lead role. It’s a triple first for her; first time in the role of Manon, first time with Muti as conductor and first time in Rome. Manon Lescaut, which was premiered in Turin in 1893, was Puccini’s third opera

and the first one to become popular. Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Teatro Costanzi, Piazza Beniamino Gigli 7, www.operaroma.it.

Russian-Austrian soprano Anna Netrebko in the lead role in Manon Lescaut.

Opera Notes Charles Dutoit is the conductor in Rome of the diptych L’enfant et les sortilèges and L’heure espagnole both by Ravel. He is expert in French repertoire as he demonstrated with Samson et Dalila by Saint-Saëns in Rome last season. The director is the prolific Laurent Pelly whose successful version of La traviata in Turin a few years back was then seen again with equal acclaim at the Massimo in Palermo in November 2012. The second opera in La Scala’s season is Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor much loved both for its music and its story. The two singers to watch are Jessica Pratt and Vittorio Grigolo, but sadly they do not sing on the same days. The director is American Mary Zimmerman who produced this version of Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor in the United States with the stars of the moment Natalie Dessay, Diana Damrau and Anna Netrebko. The Wrong Way for a Pizza On Foot from ROME TO ENGLAND By Brian Mooney Journalist, long-distance walker, mountaineer and pilgrim Brian Mooney can now be counted among the handful of people who have walked to Rome and back. Admittedly he managed this feat in two different years, in 2010 to Rome and then in 2012 from Rome back home, not like mediaeval pilgrims who

had no let-up between the outward and return journeys. But his modernday pilgrimage is no less an endeavour for having been completed with an interval of two years. Mooney is a meticulous pilgrim. He wakes at dawn, arrives at his destination early afternoon, clocks into his over-night accommodation and then goes off to see the local sites, almost always a church and a museum. After that he has a good evening meal, and goes to bed early to be ready for the next day’s 35-40 km walk. The whole journey of 2,117 kms took him 69 days, from 14 July to 20 September 2012. Like pilgrims of long ago he often walks in the company of like-minded people, either friends or other pilgrims he meets along the way, but much of his journey is on his own, partly one guesses because not many can keep his pace. The journey in Italy has few surprises for those who read his account of the way to Rome in Wanted in Rome in October 2010. The old pilgrim route of the Via Francigena, which he followed for long stretches, seems to have improved since his walk to Rome. But he has now become so expert that he can make his own way. For instance he crosses from Italy into Switzerland at Monte Cervinia, (better known to English readers as the Matterhorn), rather than at the easier Grand St Bernard pass. From there on he maps his own route, over the tough Jura mountains into France, along the well-kept canals to Paris, then off to Calais, across the Channel to Dover and home. Walking through France in the summer of 2012 was not easy. Many villages had

lost their grocery shops and fountains, making food and water difficult to find along the walk. The service in the inns and hotels was often unwelcoming and unobliging. For Mooney, who speaks French and thought he knew France and its people well from previous walking trips, the word he contends with most often is “désolé.” Two of Mooney’s repeated problems were finding people to repair his boots and backpack – two essentials for a walker. How did Mooney’s pilgrim ancestors cope without modern walking gear one wonders? How often did their sandals wear out, how often did they fail to find a good meal and a dry bed at the end of each day? And how many never made it home? Nevertheless Mooney’s single-mindedness is an inspiration and this modern pilgrim’s tale makes one want to lace up ones boots and get going, at least along the easier stretches of his way.
