HISTORY to the city,” to cite an engraving in the forum of Augustus. The next aqueduct – the wending and likewise almost totally subterranean Anio Vetus – came 40 years later. What’s more, the senate appointed two magistrates to manage it, the so-called duumviri aquae perducundae. Nobody can accuse the Romans of not taking water seriously. One problem, though, was that the water was on the muddy side, another that, as with today’s oil-pipelines or electricity cables, some citizens would tap into the system illegally. Over the centuries the water supply halved. To compensate for the lack (also exacerbated by a rising population) in 144 BC a third aqueduct – Aqua Marcia – was built at an astronomical cost of 180,000,000 sestertii by praetor Quintus Marcius Rex. Pliny dubbed its water “a gift of the gods” for its purity and freshness, the ideal additive to the rather rough wine of the period. Fourth comes Aqua Tepula (126 BC), as in tepid, it being warmed by Colli Albani’s volcanic rocks while also sharing arches in places with its immediate predecessor. To each aqueduct its presiding genius: up there with Appius as an all-time engineering great is Marcus Agrippa (of Pantheon fame). His role of aedile, which included administering Rome’s many bath complexes, impelled him to build not one aqueduct but two: Aqua Julia (33 BC) and Aqua Virgo (19 BC). Bread and circuses are one sine qua non whereby the empire might rise or fall; water is another. “When the people complained about the high price of wine,” writes Suetonius, “Augustus reproved them, his son-in-law Agrippa having ensured nobody should go thirsty.” According to Carcopino, Agrippa marked his term of office by making entrance to the baths free for the year of his aedilship. Formerly supplying the Terme di Agrippa near the Pantheon, Aqua Virgo, albeit with some Renais-
sance restoration, supplies the Trevi Fountain to this day. Still operative, its tunnels form an ecosystem complete with white water snakes and less ecologically-friendly traces of radon, a result maybe of the water’s tufa origins. The Aqua Alsietina (built around 2 BC and sometimes called the Aqua Augusta, but not to be confused with the aqueduct of the same name in Naples) – named after the Latin for Lake Martignano, which supplied the basin for spectacular naval battles (naumachiae) in Trastevere. Less well known, it’s also entirely underground. Still functioning

non-monumental modern homes. By contrast, Aqua Traiana (to supply Trastevere) has shrunk to an image on a 103 AD coin: A river god reclines under one of its arches, a reed in one arm and under the other water gushing from a pot. It was later rebuilt under Pope Paul V and renamed Aqua Paola, and still feeds the famous Aqua Paola fountain on the Janiculum. Finally comes Aqua Alexandrina in 226 AD, named after Emperor Alexandrus Severus. Architectural advances meant it could be built mostly above ground. Built and how! History lecturer Romolo Staccoli has its arches counted: 34 at Fosse di Torre Angela, 140 at Centocelle, 52 at Torpignattara where in the summer local Bangladeshis play cricket in their shadow. At Porta Maggiore it meets Anio Vetus and Anio Novo (52 AD), Aqua Appia, Marcia and Claudia, the big daddy of them all. Add flyovers, power-lines, tram-tracks, railways for the ultimate historical palimpsest. All roads lead to Rome; here the same may almost be said of aqueducts, all that stonework echoing another thought best expressed by W.H. Auden: “Thousands have lived without love, not one without water.” Photos by Fabio Del Piano.

in the third century AD, it then dried up when the water levels in the mother lake dropped. Next up, in the grandest sense of the preposition, is Aqua Claudia (38 AD), started under Caligula and finished under Claudius about 14 years later. Take Termini’s yellow-and-white trenino to Villini, and across the tracks there it runs to your right, now topped with ivy, now new-fangled electronics. Slip down Via del Mandrione: beyond the snug tunnel, in Via Casilina Vecchia the aqueduct gets close and personal. The arches form an entrance to distinctly

HATCHED AND DISPATCHED IN ITALY
A guide to registering births and deaths in Italy
L
ife is filled with joys and sorrows, the happiness of a birth and the deep sadness on the death of a loved one. The last thing one needs on these occasions is to be bogged down by bureaucracy. We hope that the following guide to civil registrations in Italy will assist in navigating your way around these circumstances.
▶
BIRTHS
In the event of a birth in Italy, no matter if the parents are citizens or noncitizens, all registrations take place first with the local civil authority. The hospital or clinic where the child is born will issue a certificate of assistance in birthing (certificato d’assistenza al parto) and will inform the city hall of the birth within three days of the event. The parents have 10 days from the time of the birth to complete the dichiarazione di nascita (declaration of birth) and register the name of the child at the ufficio dell’anagrafe (registry office). This may be carried out by one or both 2 April 2014 | Wanted in Rome

of the parents. The documents required are the certificato d’assistenza al parto issued by the hospital and the identity documents of the parent/s and where applicable permesso di soggiorno residence permits. In Italy children may be given up to a limit of three first names. Parents wishing to register their child’s birth in their country of origin should request an estratto per riassunto dell’atto di nascita con generalità completa full birth certificate from the comune where the child is registered. If available, request the modello plurilingue, a certificate in multiple languages which will save you having the certificate translated. Then contact your country’s consulate in Italy to make an appointment to apply for a consular report of birth abroad, which is equivalent to a birth certificate from your country of origin. Although consular rulings do differ, most countries will not register a birth in a foreign country after the child reaches his or her 18th birthday.

deaths
On a more sombre note, even death has its bureaucracy. In the event of death in Italy, whether one is on holi-

day or resident here, the process to be followed is the same. Under Italian law 24 hours must pass from the time of death before the remains may be transported from the place of death for preparation for burial or shipment. In Italy, ambulances will not transport persons who are already deceased. In the case of road accidents ambulance staff will only load patients if they have vital signs and there is a chance of reanimation otherwise the police will contact the local mortuary services who will remove the body for an autopsy before being passed on to the private funeral services. In the case of a death at home the process to follow is to phone your allocated family doctor (medico di famiglia) or the guardia medica to certify the death and then to report it to the local ASL (local health authority) who will send a second doctor to confirm it. If the person has not been under the care of the family doctor for an illness or does not die in hospital, an autopsy may be necessary. You will require the services of a funeral agency for the removal of the body and any further permits of transportation as well as the registration of death with the comune and the issuing of the final death certificate.
If you wish to transport the deceased back to the family’s country of origin it is advisable to look on your consulate’s website for funeral agents in Italy that service your country. After the initial 24 hours have passed local burials can be arranged within 48 hours, however generally it takes four to seven days to arrange shipment outside Italy. If the family wishes to bury the deceased in Italy it is worth knowing that burials take place in cemeteries belonging to the comune. The payment for a burial site is a concessione cimiteriale (contract of use) for a limited period of time, not for ownership of the plot. The period of the concession varies but it normally lasts 40 to 60 years and is renewable subject to payment. Some comuni offer perpetual contracts valid for 99 years for extra payment. After the expiry date families often opt to move the remains into a smaller, less costly nicchia (niche) or have them cremated. Exhumation for transfer to another cemetery or country is permitted any time after a burial but only in the winter months – October until April – and under the supervision of the local health officer. A special authorisation is required for cremation in Italy. Most consulates will issue the necessary statement if there is evidence in a will or testament that the deceased wished to be cremated after death, or in the absence of such evidence a request from the deceased’s next of kin. Joining a cremation association is also deemed evidence of that wish. This authorisation can be obtained from the local comune by the spouse or other family members of the first degree (under article 74 of the Italian civil code) if the deceased was resident in Italy. The authorisation is submitted to the funeral agency, which makes all the necessary arrangements. It is however not uncommon to have to wait several weeks for the ashes from the crematorium.
LEGAL AFFAIRS THE Non-Catholic Cemetery in Rome One of the favourite burial places for foreigners and non-Catholic Italians in Rome is the Non-Catholic Cemetery near the Pyramid of Cestius in Ostiense, last resting place of English Romantic poets Keats and Shelley. This recently published book provides information about the cemetery’s history and its romantic pull for all those who come to Rome.
Campo Verano cemetery.
All consular representatives in Italy can help in processing the consular report of death abroad, which is equivalent to a death certificate issued in your home country. Families returning to their country of origin after the death of a loved one may delegate an Italian law firm to carry out the succession of any assets in Italy on their behalf.

Since the last guide book to the Non-Catholic Cemetery at Piramide in Rome was published 50 years ago, Nicholas Stanley-Price’s new version is particularly welcome. Subtitled “its history, its people and its survival for 300 years”, this guide covers every aspect of the life of the burial ground reserved for all Rome residents who (in the past) were not allowed to lie in hallowed Roman Catholic ground and (today) choose this last resting place for its beauty and peace. The author, a historian who has worked in the field of heritage management, covers every possible aspect of the cemetery’s life, from its foundation in the 18th century to accommodate Protestant supporters who had followed the Stuart court in exile to Rome, to the present day, explaining the practical elements of general administration, conservation and maintenance. The true charm of the book, however, is Stanley-Price’s gift of bringing the many dead to life. Through an extensive work of research, he has uncovered a wealth of stories and anecdotes regarding the occupants of the tombs that jostle each other in the various burial zones. We learn that although Joseph Severn was indeed the faithful friend of John Keats and, by public acclaim, was eventually interred alongside the poet, the same could not be said for Edward Trelawny, who nonetheless managed to manoeuvre a place right next to Shelley. The many artists, sculptors, writers and diplomats buried in the cemetery are all documented, as well as lesser known personages, like 21-year old Robert Brown who tragically died on his Grand Tour. His inscription recounts that he “unhappily lost his life at Tivoli by his foot slipping, in coming out of Neptune’s Grotto….” and warned others to be more careful. The book stresses, however, not only the memorial aspect of the cemetery but also the fact that it continues to be a working burial ground, with a chapter devoted to this aspect. But Stanley-Price reminds us that it is also a tourist attraction and a well-loved park – “a pleasant place for relaxation and contemplation”, increasingly frequented by Roman residents as well as foreign visitors. any visitors take for granted the traditional inlaid wood musical boxes and trays that abound in Sorrento shops. They may even consider them banal – souvenirs that are no longer a novelty, despite the obvious workmanship, patience and ingenuity that goes into their making. Think again. These remarkably inexpensive little masterpieces may not be available for ever. The 200-year-old tradition of Sorrentine marquetry ware has dwindled to a shadow of what it was half a century ago. “Once, there were 700 people in Sorrento devoted to creating intarsia work. Some ateliers employed up to 50 workers while loaded containers transported their work all over the world. But today we only have about 20 craftsmen left,” laments Alessandro Fiorentino, who set up the Museobottega della Tarsialignea some 15 years ago to help preserve and develop this unique craft. In order to keep prices down, many of the remaining artisans devote themselves to turning out items in series, with simple and identical designs, and Fiorentino is pessimistic about their future: “The Chinese will take over the market.” Fortunately, a handful of gifted and devoted craftsmen, such as Giuseppe Rocco and the Stinga family, still create original articles of the highest quality, like their fathers and grandfathers before them. You can observe them at work, bent over their tables among scatterings of minute slivers of wooden mosaics in their shop-studios in the narrow alleyways off Sorrento high street. We watched Nello Calemmo at work in his bottega in Via S. Maria delle

All types of wood are used, from a range of native trees like olive, walnut, rose and orange wood, poplar, chestnut, elm and so on, to the more exotic mahogany and ebony. The museum collection extends over three floors, with a fascinating array of items dating back to the era of the Grand Tour, when Sorrento craftsmen began creating inlaid mementoes for European visitors. The craft flourished for well over a century, producing works by schools of authentic masters, who are documented on the second floor, with the diplomas and medals won at various international expositions and fairs. crafts one of Sorrento’s greatest intarsia artists, Michele Grandville (1821-93) and a magnificent bed, richly inlaid with mother-of-pearl, standing under a ceiling romantically decorated with floral swathes and cavorting cupids. There are also numerous portraits of local people wearing traditional costume. Interestingly, many were commissioned by King Ferdinand IV of Naples, who employed artists to paint peasants, fishermen and street sellers as models for the porcelain figurines produced by his Royal Capodimonte Porcelain factory. How may Sorrento inlaid art develop? The ground floor is dominated by an arresting construction, personally designed by Fiorentino to commemorate the fourth centenary of the death of Sorrento poet Torquato Tasso in 1995. It is, he explained, a modern version of a “Machine della Festa” – a shoulder-borne construction carried in ceremonial processions. In the past, these were destroyed after use. This one, however, lives on — a pointer towards the future.

SIDE NOTES Those interested in seeing more examples of marquetry can visit another museum nearby, the Museo Correale di Terranova. Among the many Sorrentine antiques on display at this private museum are some fine intarsia works by local 19thcentury masters of marquetry such as Antonino Damora, and Luigi and Giuseppe Gargiulo, whose son Silvio Salvatore – better known as the poet Saltovar – donated the works to the museum in 1937. The highlights of the collection of boxes and chests is an intricate bureau made in 1910 by Giuseppe Gargiulo, which features a music stand, dressing table, sewing box and even a chessboard. There are also other works on display by perhaps the most famous of the Sorrentine intarsia masters, Michele Grandville, who at one stage employed 43 apprentices and was commissioned by the Royal House of Bourbon. GUIDE TO GARDENS AROUND ROME CASTEL GIULIANO One of the best rose gardens in Lazio lies about 7 km from Bracciano, north of Rome. The estate gardens surround the large, square three-storey farm castle, which stands on a high island of volcanic tufa rock facing Cerveteri and the sea, and they encompass the church of S. Filippo Neri in the grounds. The planting of the garden is the work of Marchesa Umbertina Patrizi, and shows a garden style that is rarely found in Italy. There are more than 1,000 rose bushes, including fine climbers on the castle walls. Only open for group bookings. This year’s Festa delle Rose takes place on 10 and 11 May from 10.00-19.00. Palazzo Patrizi, Castel Giuliano, tel. 0699802530, www.castel-giuliano.it. LA MORTELLA On the island of Ischia off the coast of Naples is an oasis of tropical and Mediterranean plants. The gardens were created in 1958 by Susana Walton, the wife of English composer Sir William Walton. La Mortella is divided into two areas: the valley garden and the hill garden. The valley, designed by celebrated English landscape architect Russell Page, is shady, luxuriant and tropical while the hill, designed by Lady Walton, is sunny and Mediterranean. The garden design takes advantage of the sea views and is enriched by fountains. Open from April to October. The Walton Foundation organises concerts of classical music each autumn in the Greek theatre overlooking the sea. Via Francesco Calise 39, Forio d’Ischia (NA), tel. 081986220, www.lamortella.org.

FRIDA KAHLO 20 March-13 July This exhibition is dedicated to Mexican artist Frida Kahlo (1907-1954), arguably
one of the world’s most famous female artist of the first half of the 20th century, and the greatest exponent of Latin American art. Kahlo’s life was marked by colour but marred by tragedy, both of which she incorporated into her work. Regarded as a forerunner of the feminist movement, Kahlo was linked to influential men such as Leon Trotsky and André Breton, later marrying revolutionary artist Diego Rivera. This major exhibition explores her paintings as well as her relationship with the artistic movements of the time, from Mexican Modernism to international Surrealism. The exhibition comprises some of her most celebrated works, on loan from Mexico, Europe and the US, and also includes a selection of photographic portraits of the artist. Scuderie del Quirinale, Via XXIV Maggio 16, tel. 639967500, www.scuderiequirinale.it. LO SPINARIO 4 Feb-25 May The exhibition comprises 45 works inspired by the Spinario, the GrecoRoman bronze which is one of the most admired pieces in the Capitoline Museums collection. The Hellenistic sculpture of a boy pulling a thorn from the sole of his foot was part of a donation to the people of Rome by Pope Sixtus IV in 1471. Bronzes, paintings and numerous replicas are on loan from European museums. Palazzo dei Conservatori, Capitoline Museums, Piazza del Campidoglio, tel. 060608, www.museicapitolini.org.
IL PAESAGGIO ITALIANO. FOTOGRAFIE 1950-2010 22 Jan-20 April This exhibition offers, in 134 images, a fairly comprehensive overview of the ways in which Italian photographers looked at the landscape from the post-war period until the 2010s. It starts from the pictorialism of Peretti Griva, and the “calligraphism” of Giuseppe Cavalli who in 1947 founded the photographic group La Bussola, essential for the development of “artistic” photography in Italy. Alongside the aestheticising Bussola, the group La Gondola, with Monti and Berengo Gardin, had a more lyrical-realist approach; while Luigi Crocenzi – author of numerous photo-stories for Elio Vittorini’s journal Il Politecnico – may be regarded as a neo-realist photographer. A common element was the observation of what in Italy – not only in the south – remained tethered to the past, a condition seen in the images of the aforementioned photographers and others; while two photographs by Carlo Cisventi epitomise coexisting aspects of the country in the 1950s: traditional fire rituals dating back to pre-Christian cults, industrial flames in the oil fields of the Po Valley. In the 1960s and 1970s approaches to landscape became more experimental, the socio-geographical survey of territory was complemented by a burgeoning environmental awareness; at the same time, photographers such as Nino Migliori, Mario Giacomelli, Roberto Salbitani, steered photography towards linguistic, literary, conceptual directions. A pivotal role in the development of landscape photography was played from the beginning of the 1980s by Guido Guidi, Luigi Ghirri, and Gabriele Basilico; it was especially Ghirri who – while engaging in a thoughtful investigation of the meanings of photography – organised a number of explorations focusing especially on the least apparent facets of the country. His projects of the 1980s, involving photographers and writers, changed the way of looking at the landscape, but also the status of the photographer, who would finally be regarded in all respects as a visual artist. The last 20 years have seen the advent of digital imaging and post-production, and the entry of photography into the world of commercial galleries and of contemporary art museums. Landscape photography has further diversified; while, in the wake of Ghirri, it has remained an instrument for investigating the territory (Camisasca, Simonazzi, Raffaelli, Zanta, Citron, Botto), in another sense it got closer to painting, creating manipulated images often quite removed from the physical world. opera MILAN
LES TROYENS BY HECTOR BERLIOZ 8-30 April With a star cast of Gregory Kunde, Anna Caterina Antonacci and Daniela Barcelona. What makes this production all the more promising is that it will mark Antonio Pappano’s conducting debut at La Scala. It is directed by the Scottish opera, theatre and movie director David McVicar, who already has 30 operas to his name. Les Troyens is tragic opera inspired by Virgil’s Aeneid, which was first staged long after the death of the composer. This is a co-production with the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the San Francisco Opera and the Weiner Staatsoper. Teatro alla Scala, Piazza alla Scala, www.teatroallascala.org. See also Opera Notes. JONAS KAUFMANN 14 April Not to be missed for fans of this worldclass and very popular tenor who has had enormous recent success in his Wagner roles (Die Walkűre and Parsifal) at the Metropolitan Opera, where he performed a Lied cycle in March. The programme of Lieder on Kaufmann’s European tour (which he performs with Helmut Deutsch piano) will include Schubert’s Winterreisse. Kaufmann describes Lied as the royal class of singing because it gives him the opportunity to sing from the heart as well as to perform solo. Teatro alla Scala, Piazza alla Scala, www.teatroallascala.org, see also www.jonaskaufmann.com.
Paolo Di Nicola
