BEES FOR BRITISH EXPO 2015 The British pavilion in Milan will focus on the importance of the honey bee to our planet
B
ritish beekeepers will be delighted by the news that the winning design for the British pavilion at Expo 2015 designed by Wolfgang Buttress (see Side Notes) is inspired by the life and “unique role of the honey bee”. Visitors to the British pavilion in Milan next year will be greeted by fruit trees, will linger in the courtyard, stroll through an undulating meadow and then take several winding routes to the “hive”. The visit is accompanied by the hum of bees and visual reminders of the hive such as honeycomb designs along the way.
Honey bees in a healthy hive.

It is sad that British lovers of honey and beekeepers get less and less opportunity to hear the buzz of bees, let alone appreciate the work of the honey bee, the apis mellifera. The country’s bee colonies are in sharp decline. Some of the blame for the precarious state of British bees (but certainly not all of it) can be put down to a wet spring in 2013, to marauding hornets (coming from “abroad”) and to the infamous varroa mite that leeches on bees and eventually kills them. But most beekeepers know that the steep decline of colonies of both honey and bumble bees (which in some cases are more efficient pollinators than the
honey bee) means that something else is killing British bees. About two seasons ago I watched a hive of bees disappear in the UK. And when I say “disappear” I mean vanish, not die. I noticed unusual behaviour for several weeks. The bees were no longer able to calculate the height of the entrance to the hive. Arriving home at speed and weighed down with pollen, some would fly too high, hurtling against the supers (the upper part of the hive) and then crash to the ground. Others would arrive too low, missing the little platform in front of the hive entrance and tumble helplessly into the long grass below. Anyone who has kept bees knows that this is not normal behaviour. Then one sunny morning I noticed no activity at all. When I opened the hive there wasn’t a bee in sight, not even a corpse. It was like arriving at a once-bustling town to find that everyone had fled. It was obvious from the empty state of the hive that the bees had not died from one of the bacterial diseases to which they are prone, such as American or the less-serious European foulbrood. They had not been attacked by the varroa mite, wax moth or raiding hornets. They had simply gone.
ENVIRONMENT Although the scientific evidence is not yet conclusive, beekeepers generally think that these little creatures are suffering from pesticides sprayed on neighbouring crops and gardens. Most pesticides now contain nerve-agents called neonicotinoids (or neonics for short) which, as the name suggests, contain nicotine-like chemicals. The pharmaceutical companies that produce these pesticides claim that they do not kill bees because the doses sprayed on crops are not high enough to harm them. Maybe that is true, but the new generation of nicotine-containing pesticides are designed to disorient insects. My bees were certainly disoriented. There is enough evidence of the danger of neonicotinoids to have convinced 15 out of the 27 members of the European Union of the harm they are doing. As of 1 December last year, clothianidin, imidacloprid and thiametoxam are out of bounds for a trial two-year period. The ban is also in operation in Britain, but the UK agreed to the regulation only after a great deal of grumbling from the department of environment, food and rural affairs. DEFRA (earlier known as the ministry of agriculture) did not like the EU’s decision, claiming that there was not enough scientific evidence to back up the ban. To quote from its report: “Our current assessment of the evidence is that there is not an unacceptable risk to pollinators from the present uses of neonicotinoids. We therefore regard sweeping restrictions on neonicotinoids as unnecessary and the resultant costs as unjustified.” Its opposition was not enough to prevent the two-year ban on crops such as rape seed and maize, but DEFRA has allowed gardeners and horticulturalists to continue using these toxins on their flowers and vegetables.
However, the British supermarket chain Waitrose is taking a more positive approach. It has told its suppliers of fruit, vegetables and flowers to stop using neonicotinoids by the end of 2014 as a “responsible preliminary cautionary step”. Waitrose has said that it supports the EU ban and is funding a three-year research project at the University of Exeter to look into the effect on pollinators of a combination of these substances and other pesticides. In Italy, where spraying of neonicotinoids on maize crops was banned in 2008 after a disastrous summer when tens of thousands of bee hives were lost along the Po Valley, the following three seasons saw a considerable improvement in the wellbeing of bee populations, according to Unaapi (Unione Nazionale Associazioni Apicoltori Italiani), which represents about 26 per cent of the more than one million Italian beekeepers. The ban was then extended for a fourth year and is now covered by the EU regulations. The British Expo 2015 pavilion is also a hopeful new sign of a commitment to the importance of bees to our ecosystem. Whatever the doubts of DEFRA on the research to date, the British pavilion is an indication that Britons really do understand that bees are fundamental not only to the production of crops, but also “to feeding the planet and energy for life.” *The theme for Expo2015. SIDE NOTES Wolfgang Buttress is the designer of the British pavilion for Milan’s Expo 2015. In his introduction explaining the inspiration behind his winning design, Buttress points out that there is an intrinsic relationship between bees and humans. Not only do bees pollinate every third mouthful of food

we consume, but the organisation of the hive and the complex interdependencies of the social structures within it are an advanced and complex ecosystem, with parallels in human culture. The hive acts as a sort of barometer of the world’s health, and the present precarious state of the health of bees in the developed world is a serious sign for the planet. There are four focal points to the pavilion; the orchard; the meadow, the hive and the structure of the hive itself. The structure will be one of the most inventive parts of the pavilion, using new and sophisticated material and geometrical shapes that mirror the inside of a hive. Once constructed, it will be connected to a real hive via accelerometers that measure the bees’ vibrations and LED lights to reflect their movements as they work. There will also be a live video feed from the hive to be screened on a wall in the orchard. The €6 million contract for construction has been awarded to two British companies, construction consultants Stage One, which is based in York, and the London-based RISE, that specialises in temporary structures. Expo 2015 is open in Milan next year from 1 May to 31 October. 2 July 2014 | Wanted in Rome

GRAGNANO: MASTERS OF THE WHITE ART
Our second feature on traditional Italian crafts
T
he Amalfi Coast is one of Italy’s most popular tourist spots, yet few visitors venture from the coast to explore the craggy Lattari mountains that rise behind the string of little towns and inlets that face the tranquil Gulf of Salerno. Thanks to their inaccessibility, however, these mountains have been preserved virtually uncontaminated, cloaked in spontaneous vegetation, Mediterranean scrub, woods and springs. It was the presence of abundant springs of pure mountain water and an almost constant soft sea breeze that favoured the creation of the pastamaking industry of the small hillside town of Gragnano, perched on the slopes above Amalfi. Morning and evening, an east-west wind blows through the main street where great sheets of pasta used to be hung outside on rods to let them dry in the air. This picturesque scene no longer exists, of course. The pasta is now dried indoors to respect modern hygienic requirements, but Gragnano is still the “City of Pasta”, leader of what is known as the “White Art” of pasta-making. In the second half of the 19th century, during its period of maximum glory,

CRAFTS the pasta industry of Gragnano was so famous that the Bourbon rulers of Naples built a railway connecting the town to Castellammare di Stabia. It was a continuation of Italy’s very first railway line, constructed in 1839 to link Naples to Portici, and the principal purpose of the extension was to facilitate the swift and easy transportation of pasta to the Campania capital. The town identified itself so closely with pasta production, in fact, that the coat of arms features a fist clasping a sheaf of corn. The competition of cheaper, industrial-made pasta hit the industry badly in the 20th century and the Irpinia earthquake of 1980 dealt another blow. The 100 Gragnano pasta manufacturers of the golden age shrank. The survivors, however, fought back, combining their forces to form the Cooperativa Pastai Gragnano and continue the timehonoured, father-to-son tradition. The cooperative has now developed into the Gragnano Città della Pasta Consortium
of eight family-run pasta factories that collectively churn out an astonishing 9,000 quintals of pasta each day. Some 80 per cent of this is exported. Giuseppe Di Martino, owner of the Pastificio Di Martino and Dei Campi and president of the consortium, says: “Gragnano produces 14 per cent of Italy’s pasta export market. Every day our pasta reaches 10 million gourmet consumers all over the world.” Gragnano pasta, in fact, is a gourmet product. The pasta manufacturers made the wise decision to aim for superior quality, using only the best durum wheat grown in Puglia, Basilicata and Abruzzo mixed with the water of their mountain springs and fed through special bronze moulds. The trafilature in bronzo process not only gives Gragnano pasta its unique shapes, but also ensures a perfect al dente consistency in cooking. There are over 40 different forms, some combined with natural ingredients, such as lemon, chillies, porcini mushrooms, sepia

ink and so on. The classics, however, remain the pacchero, a large, thick tube invented in Gragnano, the fusilli that were traditionally rolled round a knitting needle and the caccavella, that claims to be the world’s biggest pasta shape. The pasta makers are not content to stick rigidly to tradition and are constantly inventing new shapes to intrigue the consumer. Many are exclusive and protected by copyright. Another important factor is the drying process, which is slow and at a low temperature. The traditional maccheroni or pasta lunga (what we call spaghetti) come out of the mixing machine in long ribbons that are cut with shears and draped over steel rods. The shorter forms are dried on trays. The consortium’s far-sightedness was rewarded with IGP status (indicazione geografica protetta, a protected food product from a specific geographic area recognised by the EU) in December 2013 – the first pasta product to join the list of Italy’s 261 registered IGP foods. The event
CRAFTS was celebrated in the town with a grand pasta fair in the main piazza and a formal presentation in the historic church of Corpus Domini – notable for its splendid 18th-century silk canopy that covers the entire 400-sqm ceiling of the nave and a throw-back to the age when the town was known, not only for its flour and maccheroni, but also for silk and leather production. “IGP recognition means that no other manufacturer in the European community can use our name or imitate our pasta. Our next aim is to extend this exclusive recognition to the rest of the world,” De Martino says. “IGP status also means quality control with regular checks by state inspectors.” He points out that Italy controls and guarantees its food products more than any other country. A trip to the town is not complete without a visit to the Valley of the Mills, where once some 30 mediaeval water mills stood on the banks of the Vernotico stream, fed by spring water channelled through a system of aqueducts. Up until the mid-19th century these mills provided the power to grind the flour, not only for Gragnano, but also for all the bakers of the city of Naples. Electricity silenced the old mill-wheels forever. Nine survive as picturesque ruins covered in trailing undergrowth. The winding road through the narrow valley leads to the old Romanesque church of the Assumption, declared a national monument in 1927. At Christmas, the valley revives thanks to a spectacular hand-made nativity scene set up under the arches of the 17th-century bridge leading into the valley, which draws droves of visitors each year. In the true Neapolitan tradition, the Christmas crib reflects features of everyday life in the 17th-18th century, and it goes without saying that it includes the baker and the pasta maker. A recipe from Di Martino Pastificio The website (www.pastadimartino.com) has a number of recipes. Just make your choice according to the pasta format you like best. We chose Casareccio alla Stranges created by Giuseppe Stranges of the Associazione Cuochi Penisula Sorrentina. Ingredients 400 g of Di Martino fusillata casareccia pasta 300 g carrots 30 g onion 150 g dry-cured ham 100 g extra vergine olive oil cooking cream pepper and salt to taste grated parmigiano ½ glass brandy Method Chop the carrots, onion and ham and sauté in olive oil. Add the brandy and reduce. Add the cream and cook for around 15 minutes. Salt and pepper to taste. Cook the pasta, drain al dente, transfer to the sauce and dust with parmigiano. Leave to cream for a few minutes and serve. Pasta exports In the first ten months of 2013, exports of Italian pasta reached €1.8 million, 3.7 per cent up on the previous year. In 2012, Italy produced 3.3 million tons, well ahead of the USA, the world’s next largest producer (2 million tons). Much of the increase in 2013 can be attributed to new markets such as Russia, India, the United Arab Emirates and Brazil, as well as countries in north Africa. The European Union still accounts for two thirds of pasta exports from Italy, with Germany, France and the United Kingdom the three largest consumers. Many of the Italian pasta producers are small and medium-size companies, mainly from Campania, followed by Abruzzo, Emilia Romagna, Veneto and Lombardia. In 2012 Italians consumed 26 kg of pasta per capita compared with the next largest consumer, Venezuela, which consumed 12.3 kg per capita. TITINA MASELLI: ESSERE IN MOVIMENTO 10 June-27 July This retrospective of paintings by Titina Maselli (1924-2005) is a long overdue tribute to an Italian artist who had a distinguished career that spanned six decades. Coming from a highly cultured milieu, Maselli left Italy in her early 30s to live in New York and Austria, and later Paris, for long periods; maybe this is why her standing is still not fully acknowledged in her homeland. This show, curated by Bartolomeo Pietromarchi, focuses on paintings whose subjects are sports (soccer, boxing, cycling) and the city, and is part of the centenary celebrations of the Italian National Olympic Committee. The exhibition is on display in the Casa delle Armi at Foro Italico, a 1930s masterpiece by rationalist architect Luigi Moretti. “Titina never went Calciatori by Titina Maselli. Photo Giovanni De Angelis. to see a football game or a boxing match,” said her younger brother, master filmmaker Francesco Maselli on the opening night. The football players, boxers, cyclists caught in action – whose physicality has a Dionysian energy as well as the melancholy of fatigue and defeat – were often juxtaposed or superimposed over skyscrapers and night lights. All this stemmed from her fascination with speed, dynamism and a saturated colour that had among its references Boccioni and Balla, but at the same time looked forward, to the contemporary life of the metropolis with its nocturnal, darker aspects. MACERATA
SFERISTERIO OPERA FESTIVAL 18 July-10 Aug This year the Sferisterio festival puts three great women protagonists in the hands of three great women conductors. Opera è donna is the theme of the festival and in an almost unprecedented happening three women conduct the three operas in the programme. The operas are Aida (with Julia Jones conducting), Tosca (Eun Sun Kim conducting) and La Traviata (Speranza Scappucci conducting). The sferisterio, from which the festival takes its name, is a neo-classocal arena built in the 1820s for up to 4,500 people. The opera festival began in the 1920s but after a dismal first season only opened again in the 1960s. www.sferisterio.it.

UMBRIA JAZZ 11-20 July Non-stop jazz from mid-day to past midnight is the formula for this famous festival. Events take place in bars, restaurants, museums, courtyards and squares, and for ten days Perugia is synonymous with jazz played by and for
all ages and all nationalities. This year, the festival kicks off on 10 July with a football match between Italian jazz singers and Italian jazz musicians to raise funds for medical research. Italian jazz pianist Stefano Bollani plays on the Arena S. Giuliana on 15 July and the concluding day on 20 July is dedicated Italian jazz and Armando Trovajoli, Italian composer of film music and pianist, a year after his death. The same evening features great voices of jazz Take 6, Al Jarreau and Mario Bondi. This year the festival has a new logo, designed by Riccardo Pierassa, selected in conjunction with the Nuovo Istituto Design di Perugia, a big change from the previous distinguished yellow and black insignia. For the fifth consecutive year Umbria Jazz also boasts of being a “green” festival using 100 per cent renewable energy sources. www. umbriajazz.com.
SIENA
INCONTRI IN TERRA DI SIENA 18-27 July This year the festival, which traditionally has chamber music at its core, focuses on the influence of master performers on their pupils and the relationship between the two. To repeat the quote from Benjamin Franklin on the website “Tell me and I forget; teach me and I may remember; involve me and I learn.” There are four ensembles of young musicians who interact with the master performers. The International Menhuin Academy (based in Switzerland), the UCLA Camarades Emsemble (Los Anglese), the Polyphony Youth Ensemble (from Nazareth which performs in the festival for the first time this year) and the Borromeo String Quartet (Boston) which will play the complete string quartets of Bela Bartok. The festival which is based at La Foce, one-time home of Iris Origo, also has sections dedicated to the visual arts, history, food and wine. www. itslafoce.org. SETTIMANA MUSICALE SENESE 10-17 July The first festival in 1939 was dedicated entirely to music by Vivaldi, whose work was little known at the time and since then it has always tried to “re-discover” works by Italian composers and more
recently to promote contemporary music and an interdisciplinary approach to music, the voice and drama. This year the inaugural evening (invitation only) on 8 July is in Brussels at the first sitting of the new European parliament and marks the beginning of the six-month Italian presidency of the EU. The world premiere of Blanquette by Italian composer Azio Corghi, based on a story by Alphonse Daudet and commissioned by the Accademia Musicale Chigiana of Siena, is on 10 July together with L’Arlésienne also inspired by Daudet, with the voice of Chiara Muti and the Orchestra della Toscana conducted by Marco Angius. The programme also includes a homage to Lucio Berio (16 July) Sardinian sacred music (11 July) Spanish songs (12 July) and an interesting combination of music by Carl Phillip Emanuel Bach, (fifth child and second son of J.S Bach) and the contemporary Argentinian (Astor Piazzola) on 16 July. The festival concludes with an evening of tarantella. There are also master classes throughout July and Aug for single instruments, composition, chamber groups, conducting and singing. Apart from the inaugural concert all events take place in Siena. For full details see www.chigiana.it.
countries. Contemporary works are set against the baroque backdrop of the royal palaces of the House of Savoy but this year for the first time there are inaugural events are planned in the railways stations of both Turin and Lyons. For the programme see www. teatroacorte.it.

PUCCINI FESTIVAL 25 July-30 August This is the only festival dedicated exclusively to the works of Puccini. It takes place on the outskirts of Viareggio in an open-air theatre on the shore of Lake Massacciucolo, in the grounds of the villa where the great Italian composer lived and is buried. The four operas to celebrate the festival’s 60th anniversary this year are La Boheme (24 July, 2,10,15, 22 Aug), Madame Butterfly (25 July, 1, 8, 16, 24 August), Turandot (9, 14, 17, 23, 29 Aug) and Il Trittico (3, 7, 21, 30 Aug). www.puccinifestival.it.

VITERBO
TUSCIA FILM AND OPERA FESTIVALS 7 July-15 Aug Officially the dates for the annual opera festival at Viterbo are 7 July-15 Aug but in mid-June there was still a query about the dates and there was still no programme. Events will probably begin in the courtyard of the Palazzo dei Priori from 7 July-17 July and then return to their historic location in Piazza S. Lorenzo. The problem appears to be a mix of dates with the Tuscia Film Fest (10-16 July) over the use of square. The Tuscia Film Fest screens the best international films of the season from 27 June-6 July and then from 1016 July there are screenings of Italian films in Piazzas S. Lorenzo, hence the problem of the dates for the opera festival. See www.tusciafilmfest.com and www.tusciaoperafestival.com.
DANCE BOLZANO
BOLZANO DANZA 14-26 July Aspiring dancers mix with established choreographers in a combination of workshops and performances. There are 12 performances, eight of which are Italian premieres. This year the festival is celebrating its 30th anniversary and one of the works to look out for is sitespecific Bodies in Urban Spaces by Willie Dorner (19 July) in which dancers make use of venues throughout the city. Another anniversary event is Ballet Preljocaj in Empty Moves parts I, II, III to the music Empty Words by John Cage (21 July). Part III is an Italian premiere. The festival acts as a bridge between the dance disciplines of north, middle and southern Europe and this year the links between dance and choreography in Germany and Italy are particularly strong. www.bolzanodanza.it.

OPERA MILAN
COSÌ FAN TUTTE BY MOZART 19 June-18 July Mozart’s ever-popular last opera is conducted by Daniel Barenboim, who is conducting his second Mozart opera at La Scala. It is directed by Claus Guth, based on his 2011 Salzburg festival staging, which was a revision of his 2009 working of the same opera. The cast is Maria Bengtsson, Rolando Villazón,
Michele Pertusi, Adam Plachetka, Serena Malfi, Katija Dragojevic. Bengtsson had disappointing reviews when she sang the role of Fiordiligi in the Salzburg festival production. Teatro alla Scala, Piazza della Scala, www.teatroallascala.org. LE COMTE ORY BY GIOACHINO ROSSINI 2-21 July Among the attractions of this production is the Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Florez who takes the lead role. The opera is directed by Laurent Pelly, one of France’s most sought-after directors in a new La Scala co-production with the Operá National de Lyon. This is the first time that Pelly has directed Le Comte Ory and it is also his first operatic set and stage design. Pelly’s productions of Ravel’s L’heure espagnole and L’enfant et les Sortilèges were seen in Rome earlier this year. Donato Renzetti conducts. Le Comte Ory was Bellini’s penultimate opera and his only one in French. Teatro alla Scala, Piazza della Scala, www.teatroallascala.org.

THE PRODIGAL SON BY BENJAMIN BRITTEN 4 July This is Britten’s third biblical parable for church performance after Curlew River and the Burning Fiery Furnace. It was first performed in 1968 and Britten dedicated the work to Shostakovich. In Rome it is performed at the church of S. Maria in Ara Coeli, conducted by James Conlon and directed by Mario Martone with the orchestra and chorus of the Teatro Dell’ Opera di Roma. FESTIVAL DI CARACALLA LA BOHEME BY GIACOMO PUCCINI 14 July-9 Aug Puccini’s opera is conducted by Daniele Rustione and directed by David Livermore in a new production. Italian director Livermore has directed operas at almost all of Italy’s main opera houses, with Othello and Carmen to his name in Genoa earlier this year. In a 2012 production of La Boheme in Philadelphia Livermore used digital reproductions of masterpieces by Van Gogh, Renoir and Manet from the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Puccini’s La Boheme was first performed in Turin in 1896 conducted by Toscanini, who was only 29 at the time. It is one of the most often performed operas worldwide. Terme di Caracalla. OPERA NOTES
La Caduta di Gierusalemme by Giovanni Paolo Colonna was performed at the Barga festival in 2013.
All’opposto dell’Italia.
Paolo Di Nicola Montanari and directed by American born Lorenzo Mariani, artistic director of the Teatro Massimo in Palermo. With the orchestra and chorus of the Teatro dell’Opera di Roma. Terme di Caracalla.
THEATRE ROME FRINGE FESTIVAL 7 June-13 July Rome welcomes the third edition of this annual theatrical event which attracted over 35,000 spectators last year. A mixture of theatre, music and film, the programme comprises over 72 companies and 100 Italian and foreign acts including America’s Angela La Rocca (10-12 July). The action takes place on three separate stages in Villa Mercede in S. Lorenzo and covers all genres of fringe including performance, drama, comedy, art installation, standup, sung theatre, theatrical dance and improvisation. Daily from 19.30. Villa Mercede, Via Tiburtina 113, S. Lorenzo, www.romafringefestival.net.
ACADEMIES CASA DI GOETHE 12 June-14 Sept The Casa di Goethe itself is the focus of an installation entitled Korrekturen - Correzioni by multi-media artist
Via Lewandowsky who examines Goethe’s continued “presence” in the museum. The Berlin-based artist uses photography and acoustic installations to investigate why the rooms continue to fascinate visitors despite having been restructured and restored extensively since the time of Goethe. Casa di Goethe, Via del Corso 18 (Piazza del Popolo), tel. 0632650412, www. casadigoethe.it. FRENCH ACADEMY 11 June-14 Sept Curated by French Academy director Éric de Chassey, the group exhibition La pittura o Come sbarazzarsene (Painting or How to Get Rid of It) comprises works by four artists of different nationalities: Fabio Mauri from Italy, Marcia Hafif from the United States, Martin Barré from France, and Olivier Mosset from Switzerland. The exhibition takes a fresh approach to the question of whether the traditional concept of painting is obsolete. Each of the exhibited painters embraced abstraction and the minimalism of the 1960s but returned full-circle to painting in later life. The works on display span three crucial periods of their artistic careers and offer an insight into the history of abstraction. Accademia di Francia a Roma – Villa Medici, Viale Trinità dei Monti 1, tel. 0667611, www.villamedici.it. JAPANESE CULTURAL INSTITUTE 20 May-15 July The Japanese Cultural institute hosts an exhibition of illustrations entitled New Japanese Talents. On show are 75 illustrations for children’s books by celebrated Japanese artists including Satoe Tone and Taro Miura. For the duration of the exhibition there is relaxation corner in the library with a selection of Japanese books for children. Istituto Giapponese di Cultura, Via Antonio Gramsci 74, tel. 063224754, www.jfroma.it. SWISS INSTITUTE OF ROME 13 June-11 Sept Zurich artist Annette Amberg stages Una Questione Privata at the Swiss Institute of Rome. The exhibition is part of the Openings Out to Reality cycle which was launched at the Institute two years ago. The project asks artists to engage in the relationship between art and the cultural institutions in which art is created. Amberg’s installation is the culmination of her experience at the Swiss Institute, including her response to the building’s staff, spaces and programmes.
