THE AMERICAN ACADEMY GETS NEW DIRECTOR Archaeologist Kimberly Bowes talks about the AAR’s policies, programmes and its history

I

f we can presume that foreign academies reflect the spirit of the nations they represent, the American Academy in Rome (or the AAR, as it is commonly called) is a shining example. Its towering wrought iron gates, formal early 20thcentury façade and classical columned quadrangle enclose a hive of activity, with fellows and staff working purposefully around the airy rooms and corridors. “This is a very busy moment,” says new director Kimberly Bowes, who took up the post at the beginning of this summer. “We have a full programme ahead of over 90 events – exhibitions, concerts, lectures, field trips, readings, discussions

on contemporary issues and so on. Many of these are in collaboration with Italian institutions and other foreign academies, and two thirds are open to the public. We encourage our fellows to interact with Rome and not to be isolated. We are also involved in helping them to make contacts and find outlets for their work.” Throwing open its doors to Rome and the outside world is a cornerstone of the Academy’s policy. An average of 30 Rome Prize Fellows, selected by rotating independent juries, are hosted by the Academy each year for periods of study that vary from six months to up to two years. In addition, the AAR annually welcomes five Italian Fellows – known as

Affiliated Fellows – three in the arts and two in the humanities. The intellectual leaders of the AAR – the director of the Academy, along with directors in humanities and the arts – typically serve a three-year term in order to guarantee a regular turnover of new ideas, while permanent staff keep the wheels running smoothly. “We are the only one of Rome’s 34 foreign academies to be wholly privately financed,” Bowes explains. The foundations of the AAR were first laid in 1894 with private money put up by a group of businessmen and benefactors led by architect Charles F. McKim, inspired by the surge of interest in European architecture and antiquities aroused by exhibits at the Chicago World Fair. The Academy began life as the American School of Architecture. Three years later, it was transformed into the American Academy in Rome, making it one of the first foreign academies set up in the city. The project attracted the sponsorship of most of the doyens of US high finance such as the Carnegie Foundation, J.P. Morgan, McKim, Harvard College, the Rockefeller Foundation, William K. Vanderbilt, Henry Walters and others. 10 September 2014 | Wanted in Rome

CULTURAL ACADEMIES

The Academy’s Villa Aurelia building is reserved for formal events.

In 1912 it merged with the American School of Classical Studies to form the institution that exists today on the Gianicolo hill. The main McKim, Mead & White building, named after the architecture firm responsible for building it, has two separate departments. One is devoted to the arts – including music and literature – and the other to the humanities. In addition, the Academy possesses the palatial 17th-century Villa Aurelia, bequeathed by Philadelphia heiress Clara Jessup Heyland in 1909. Situated just across the road, it is used for formal receptions and events. Bowes is the Academy’s 22nd director. An archaeologist and university professor, she has a dazzling curriculum vitae that includes study or lecturing posts at some of the top US academic institutions, with a PhD from Princeton, appointments as a postdoctoral fellow/lecturer at Yale, visiting pre-fellow at Harvard, assistant professorships at Fordham and Cornell, and her present appointment as Associate Professor of Classical Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. “The university has very kindly given me leave of absence to let me take up this post,” she explains. Kim – as her colleagues call her – is not new to Rome. She was a fellow herself in 2006 and for the past two years she has served as the Andrew W. Mellon Professor in Charge of the School of Classical Studies, the humanities arm of the Academy. The last few years have seen her deeply involved in “The Peasant Project”,

a revolutionary archaeological campaign centred in Cinigiano in the Maremma area of Tuscany and aimed at exploring the lifestyle, diet and habits of the rural poor of the ancient Roman world. “We didn’t know at all what to expect and there were plenty of surprises. We uncovered remains of all kinds of constructions, like farm buildings, animal outhouses, oil presses, drainage systems and so on, as well as a lot of objects. We hadn’t expected poor people to have access to the same consumer goods as rich people. But they did. The only difference was that they had less of them. We also found traces of seeds and pollen that suggests their use of crop rotation.” She says that during the next three years as AAR director, she will have to carve out time to write her book about the discoveries. “If archaeologists don’t publish their findings it’s as if these sites never existed,” said Bowes. “There’s very little difference between an unpublished excavation and a looted site – we have a moral responsibility to present our findings to the public.” What first sparked off her interest in archaeology? “I think it was when I went to Guatemala with my parents, when I was about ten. They were amateur bird watchers and they took me all over the world following their passion. Climbing up the steps of the Tikal Temples made a huge impression on me.” AAR fellows enjoy other privileges besides the nurturing of their talents. The Academy also supports a sustainable food

programme, in part produced in its own garden. “Our grounds include 11 acres of organically cultivated gardens. Our last president, Adele Chatfield-Taylor, invited the celebrated Californian chef Alice Waters, vice president of Slow Food International, to create our food programme. We bring over chefs from the US to explore Italian sustainable food traditions. They also cook for the Academy guests, with large family-style meals fostering our collaborative environment.” American Academy in Rome, Via Angelo Masina 5, tel. 065846412, www. aarome.org. Mark Robbins new president of AAR As well as the new director, the AAR also has a new president and CEO as of January this year when Mark Robbins replaced Adele Chatfield-Taylor, who held the job for 25 years. Robbins has considerable teaching and administrative experience and his work as an artist includes photography, architecture and site-specific installation projects. His previous jobs include executive director of the International Center of Photography, first curator of architecture at the Wexner Center for Arts in Columbus, Ohio, director of design at the National Endowment for the Arts in Washington DC and dean of the School of Architecture at Syracuse University in New York. 10 September 2014 | Wanted in Rome

ART

Andy Devane

FROM CRIME TO CULTURE

Public art is central to urban regeneration in Rome’s S. Basilio district

A

lthough better known around the world for its church frescoes, Rome is once again leading the charge in a modern-day renaissance of urban art on the capital’s streets. Residents of districts such as Ostiense, Testaccio, Prenestina, S. Lorenzo and Garbatella will attest to the continuing explosion of street art, much of it bouncing off walls with vibrant colours and avant-garde designs. The growing number of designs being created by the world’s leading street artists – with the city’s firm approval – is helping to boost Rome’s street cred as an important hub for European street art, along with Berlin, Paris and Madrid. This new generation of murals should not be viewed as “street art” in the underground style of Banksy; rather they are “public art”, the result of successful collaboration between the artist, the area and its residents. Central to the movement in Rome is WALLS, an association that promotes the value of street art and the right of artists to decorate public spaces (see Wanted in Rome article December 2013). Founded in 2008, the group has

ART overseen numerous private and public projects in diverse locations around the capital, from children’s hospitals to universities and jails. Earlier this summer it was the driving force behind SanBa, a scheme designed to regenerate S. Basilio, a north-east Rome suburb more associated with crime than culture. The main idea of the project was to enliven this disadvantaged urban area with the help of permanent art installations by two young, internationally recognised street artists: Italy’s Agostino Iacurci and Spain’s Liqen. Both artists each completed two gigantic murals on four buildings made available to them by municipal housing body ATER Roma, breathing new life into an otherwise forgotten neighbourhood. Located in the shadow of Rebibbia prison, the entire district shows signs of neglect and poverty, making the monumental SanBa murals all the more important, and indeed unexpected. Perhaps the most spectacular of them is El Devenir (see cover of this edition), a hugely colourful vision of blossoming flowers, complete with beetle and dragonfly and many other creatures not instantly familiar. Painted on the gable wall of a four-storey block of flats at the corner of Via Fabriano, the mural looms above abandoned

El Renacer by Liqen.

crashed cars and elderly residents playing cards in their gardens below. Testifying to S. Basilio’s tattered reputation, directly across the road is an unrelated piece of art work: a memorial to a local man shot dead over a traffic dispute last year, in a case which catapulted the district into the headlines again for all the wrong reasons. Unlike the joy of Devenir, this menacing mural features hooded, masked ultra football fans and a pit bull. The mood picks up again further down Via Fabriano with another eyecatching and powerful work by Liqen. Titled El Renacer (meaning “to be born again” in Spanish), it shows a red rake uprooting a monotone civilisation, spanning from ancient Rome to today’s technological age, allowing fresh new shoots to sprout up through the fertile soil. From a distance the mural seems relatively simplistic; it is only on closer inspection that the staggering level of detail can be appreciated. Ruined buildings and squashed machinery jostle with Roman soldiers on horseback and crumbling towers. Michelangelo’s statue of Moses even makes an appearance. Towards the end of the street in the direction of the jail is Iacurci’s The Blind Wall, which featured as the cover of

the August edition of Wanted in Rome. Born in Foggia near the Adriatic Sea, the 28-year-old artist is already well known to many Romans, thanks in particular to The Swimmer, his image of a jolly bather near Ostiense train station. Iacurci’s mural on the corner of Via Fabriano is painted in his distinctive style, which relies on large areas of flat colour, and is more concise and stylised in comparison to Liqen. The image shows an elderly man with a white beard and a watering can in a garden under a starry night sky. At the base of the mural is a large roughlymown green area – far less attractive than the vision above it. Iacurci’s second SanBa mural The Globe can be found at the opposite end of Via Recanati, which runs parallel to Via Fabriano. The minimalist image shows a hand cradling a glass ball containing a miniature natural world, surrounded by flying red birds. It too is painted in crisp lines and solid colours, and provides an uplifting feel to a street synonymous with drug dealing. During the two-month-long project, the artists engaged with the local community by holding meetings to explain the SanBa theme behind their designs, namely to give a positive message with hope for the future. In

The Globe by Agostino Iacurci.

ART return, residents offered the artists lunches and coffees, as well as talking to them while they worked. It was Liqen’s first time making his mark in Rome and he lived in S. Basilio for the duration of the project, to get a better feel for the area. The level of hospitality afforded to him by locals is evident in his thanks to the “signore del pranzo” at the bottom left of Devenir. Born in Vigo in 1980, Liqen is based primarily in Mexico and is best known for his intricately detailed and highly imaginative murals around the world, from Latin America to Europe. Iacurci on the other hand is no stranger to the area. In 2011 he completed the project Punti di fuga (vanishing points) at Rebibbia prison. Curated by WALLS, the murals were painted in collaboration with a group of 15 inmates in the courtyard of the jail’s maximum security unit. Each of the prisoners contributed ideas for the composition, leading to the creation of a surreal, dreamlike landscape of people and exotic animals. By the time SanBa ended on 30 May it had turned into a sort of festival, with pupils from several local primary and secondary-level schools becoming involved in painting, writing and film workshops based around the murals. The students even created a timber art installation representing an imaginary metro stop called SanBa, highlighting the desire of local residents to be better connected to the city centre. Simone Pallotta, the head of WALLS and curator of SanBa, described the project as “public art in the true sense of the word, that allows local residents to play an active role.” Pallotta said his association’s goal is to carry out similar projects in other areas “where they are needed”, adding: “Our hope is to nurture troubled neighbourhoods by creating new tourist flows from the centre out to the suburbs.” His vision is seconded by Rome’s councillor for the development of the

suburbs, Paolo Masini, who said SanBa represents “an important step in the work we are doing in [regenerating] our suburbs, which begins with street art.” The project was also backed by the cultural association Fondazione Roma-Arte-Musei whose president Emmanuele F. M. Emanuele said there was no such thing as “Serie A or Serie B citizens, just a communal body of people, and we need to create exchange between all sections of the city.” The four murals are within about a five minute walk of each other and are absolutely worth the hike out of town, even if Metro SanBa is make-believe.

How to reach S. Basilio by public transport Take the Metro B to the end of the line, at Rebibbia. Cross the street from the station and catch the 343 or 344 bus as far as the Casale S. Basilio/ Sarnano stop. From here you can easily visit all four murals on nearby Via Recanati and Via Fabriano. To learn more about Agostino Iacurci see www.agostinoiacurci.com. LEGAL AFFAIRS

HAPPILY NEVER AFTER

A guide to divorce in Italy

T

he introduction of divorce into the Italian legal system has had a long and difficult journey accompanied by debates that have raged for almost a century. Following the 1929 concordat between Italy and the Roman Catholic Church, a political treaty created the Vatican City State and guaranteed full and independent sovereignty to the Holy See. However the Church retained spiritual jurisdiction in Italy and marriage was seen to fall within this ambit. It was not until 1970 that “divorce” — or rather the dissolution of marriage

— entered into the Italian civil code. After that, a judge could dissolve a marriage but this only impacted on the civil aspects of the union and in no way impaired either the validity of the religious act of marriage or its effects. The divorce process was long and difficult and could take five to six years. The 1978 law, updated in 1987 and referred to as the Italian Divorce Law, is the current source of law for divorce in Italy. Under this, a final divorce decree can only be issued by a judge after three continuous years of legal separation. However the divorce law is under re-

view once again. In May 2014 a bill to shorten the divorce process (divorzio breve) was approved in the chamber of deputies by a majority of 381 votes in favour, 30 against and 14 abstentions. This bill is now being considered by the senate. It is already running into opposition but if approved it will be applicable immediately to divorce cases already being processed. If its terms are changed in the senate then it will have to return to the chamber of deputies for re-approval. The bill proposes to reduce the waiting period for consensual divorces to

LEGAL AFFAIRS

six months, and couples wishing to divorce will no longer be required to appear before a judge but may resolve their issue through their respective lawyers. The waiting period for contested divorces will be reduced to 12 months, and attempts will be made to resolve issues between spouses through an arbitration process before resorting to judicial proceedings. The changes in the proposed new act do not seem to impact substantially on other issues surrounding divorce such as maintenance, child custody and division of assets and therefore for the purposes of this article information surrounding these issues will be cited from the existing divorce law. With regard to maintenance, Italian law grants divorce solely in the event of “irretrievable breakdown of marriage” and not on the basis of “fault”, therefore neither party may claim damages in their divorce settlement. Maintenance is seen as assistance and not as a compensation and is therefore granted to the financially weaker party only if he or she can

10

Wanted in Rome | 10 September 2014

prove no appropriate means to provide for him- or herself or minor children (inability to work due to illness or other reasons). Maintenance is not based on the level of the quality of life during the marriage but rather on sustaining a basic quality of life after the divorce. Maintenance granted at the time of divorce may be reversed at a later date should the claimant regain the ability to support him- or herself. It can also be adjusted to accommodate increases in the cost of living. A spouse with no recourse to medical assistance is entitled to existing health insurance from the other party. Maintenance is normally paid in monthly instalments at the source of earning but in some cases a once-off lump sum may be awarded and, once this has been paid, the claimant has no further recourse to claim. Under Italian law, maintenance is always payable for children. With regard to child custody, law 54 of 2006 introduced the fundamental principle of the joint custody of children upon breakdown of marriage. Article 155 of the civil code now expressly

provides that, even in the case of legal separation, minor children have the right to a balanced and continuous relationship with both parents and to receive care, education and instruction and the right to maintain meaningful connections with the relatives of each parent. The same rules are applicable in the case of divorce. Sole custody of children will only be considered in three situations: when one of the parents is undoubtedly and seriously unsuitable to provide an education to the children; if one of the parents has an “abnormal way of life” which appears to be dangerous to the children; or when there is a categorical refusal of the children to have a relationship with a parent. The existence of a disagreement between the parents is not relevant, unless the conflict is so serious as to alter and affect the balanced growth of the children. Parents are jointly responsible for the material and spiritual needs of their children, even after the age of 18, until they have appropriate financial means to take care of themselves. No parent may remove a child

LEGAL AFFAIRS from Italy and relocate abroad unless they have the explicit permission of the other parent; doing so constitutes abduction. Italian law allows for two marriage regimes, either to hold all assets jointly (comunione dei beni) or to hold them separately (separazione dei beni). As of 1975 couples are given the option to indicate at the time of their civil or Catholic wedding which system they choose. If no preference is exercised, the couple are automatically considered to own their assets jointly. The preference of the patrimonial regime can be changed through a public deed in the presence of a notary at any time during the life of the conjugal union. In opting for separazione dei beni, the parties to marriage agree that each individual partner is the sole proprietor of their personal assets both before and during their marriage. The individuals thus have the right to use or administer their individual assets as they see fit, independently of each

other and with no claim whatsoever in the event of divorce. After marriage, any assets which they acquire jointly must state both names on the contract of purchase as well as what percentage of the asset may be attributed to each owner. In the event of divorce joint assets are split according to the percentages reflected in the purchase contract. Each individual is responsible for his or her own debts. In opting to be married in comunione dei beni, any assets acquired after marriage, even if purchased independently, belong to both spouses. This includes real estate, businesses, cars and household contents with the exception of personal effects. With regard to companies, business ventures and investments entered into prior to marriage by one of the parties but managed by both during the marriage, the actual asset remains that of the purchaser but the productive gain of the assets during the marriage belongs to both parties. As one shares in the fortunes, so too one shares in the

failures. Any debts incurred during the period of marriage are shared. Under the newly proposed system, a more active role in the divorce process is entrusted to both parties’ legal representatives, thus taking the load off the judicial system. Therefore, the need to choose a lawyer that you can trust and understand and who you know will represent your best interests is increasingly important. ROME

ROMAEUROPA FESTIVAL 24 Sept-30 Nov This year’s top-class and often experimental autumn festival is a feast for lovers of dance, with many top contemporary choreographers and dancers performing new works. You can’t get much better than a programme that offers Akram Khan and Israel Galván’s Torobaka on 24-25 Sept, Virgilio Sieni’s Dolce Vita on 4-5 Oct, Alain Platel’s Coup Fatal on 14-15 Oct, Frederick Gravel’s Usually Beauty Fails on 18-19 Oct and Dada Mazilo’s Carmen on 29 Oct-2 Nov. Torobaka, which opens the festival, is the first collaboration between these two very different dancerchoreographers. In Dolce Vita Sieni, who is often inspired by a literary text, now turns his attention to the Gospels with five scenes from the life of Christ - Annunciation, Crucifixion, Deposition, Pietà and Resurrection, in a combination of beauty and tragedy, piety and levity. On 25-26 Sept there is a site-specific contemporary interpretation of Monteverdi’s Il ballo delle Ingrate by audio and visual artist Letizia Renzini at Villa Medici to choreography by Marina Giovannini. Most of the dance is at Teatro

Virgilio Sieni’s new work Dolce Vita.

The Globe Theatre in Villa Borghese hosts its annual Shakespearean festival.

THEATRE SHAKESPEARE AT THE GLOBE 8 July-21 Sept The summer drama season at Rome’s Silvano Toti Globe Theatre is dedicated to the recently-deceased Riccardo Cavallo who directed many productions at the Globe. It will explore the author’s writings in both English and Irish while taking stock of his overall achievement and legacy. Speakers include Enrico Terrinoni, Barry McCrea, John McCourt, Mícheál Mac Craith, and the writer’s niece Janet Behan, author of the acclaimed Brendan at the Chelsea. The conference will be held at Rome’s University of Notre Dame (25, 27 Sept) and Università Roma Tre (26 Sept). For further information contact john. mccourt@uniroma3.it or barrymccrea@ gmail.com.

AMERICAN ACADEMY IN ROME 22 Sept Andrea Carandini, archaeologist, author and president of the Fondo Ambiente Italiano (FAI), presents Il paesaggio e il patrimonio storico e artistico dell’Italia. La visione del FAI per i prossimi dieci anni. Carandini reflects on how Italy can preserve its cultural heritage in the 21st century, as well as outlining the vital role played by FAI, volunteerism and public-private partnerships. The lecture will be in Italian, at Villa Aurelia, Largo di Porta S. Pancrazio 1, at 18.00. 25 Sept Part of a project linking foreign academies and international cultural institutions, the American Academy portion of the exhibition Èdra. Connecting Landscapes features artists Marco Basta, Davide D’Elia and Ludovica Goscia, and is open to the public on 25 Sept from 16.00-19.00. There are a total of 12 artists involved in the project which is presented in the form of a conceptual map and is based on themes of history, narration and memory. Organised in conjunction with Roma Art 2Nights – a network of coordinated gallery openings throughout Rome – other participating institutions include the Istituto Polacco and the embassies of Brazil and Mexico. American Academy in Rome, Via Angelo Masina 5, tel. 065852151, www.aarome.org. CASA DI GOETHE 24 Sept-16 Nov The Casa di Goethe presents an exhibition dedicated to the architect Friedrich Wilhelm von Erdmannsdorff (1736-1800), considered the founder of neoclassical architecture in Germany. The exhibition comprises sketches and studies of Roman views and buildings completed by Erdmannsdorff during his three extended stays in Rome from 1765 to 1790. Alongside designs by Erdmannsdorff are works by other artists he befriended in Rome including architect Charles-Louis Clérisseau, draughtsman Giuseppe Manocchi and sculptor Nicolas-François-Daniel Lhuillier.

Study by Federico Barocci at Casa di Goethe.

Irish writer Brendan Behan is the subject of an international conference in Rome.

A highlight of the show is a collection of ten drawings by Italian Renaissance painter and printmaker Federico Barocci (1535-1612), purchased by Erdmannsdorff while in Rome. Described as the museum’s most important event of the year, the exhibition will travel to Germany’s Anhaltische Gemäldegalerie Dessau in December. Casa di Goethe, Via del Corso 18 (Piazza del Popolo), tel. 0632650412, www.casadigoethe.it. FRENCH ACADEMY 11 June-14 Sept Curated by French Academy director Éric de Chassey, the group exhibition La pittura o Come sbarazzarsene (Painting or How to Get Rid of It) comprises works by four artists of different nationalities: Fabio Mauri from Italy, Marcia Hafif from the United States, Martin Barré from France, and Olivier Mosset from Switzerland. The exhibition takes a fresh approach to the question of whether the traditional concept of painting is obsolete. Each of the exhibited painters embraced abstraction and the minimalism of the 1960s but returned full-circle to painting in later life. The works on display span three crucial periods of their artistic careers and offer an insight into the history of abstraction.
