ALESSANDRA GIACINTI Sunset (upside down)

2010 / oil on paper / 49 x 45 cms

Alessandra Giacinti was born in 1975 in Rome, and is so, alas, the youngest on our list of chosen cover artists. (We promise we will try our best to find other, younger, figures.) She studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome where she got her “Diploma” in 2006. She was busy in Gianluigi Mattia’s studio and showed in galleries in Rome and other venues. She was assistant to the famed film maker Michelangelo Antonioni in his endeavours to work as a studio painter. In 2009 she won a scholarship to study under Peter Doig at the Kunstakademie of Düsseldorf, Germany, where she still resides. Her work is near-figurative, quick and whimsical. She has no use for the solemnity of realism and of the traditional. In nice, fluent strokes and pungent colour she spins out her tales of everyday events and anecdotes, and clothes them into something wittyly enigmatic. Here the sentimental banal postcard sunset, seen peek-a-boo, pokes fun at customary nature views, at the same time it gives them new mischievous meaning. It is like a New Yorker cover as a shaggy dog story, but more pictorial.

16 March 2011 Wanted in Rome

COLOUR, COLOUR EVERYWHERE

W

e should have celebrated our 25th anniversary last year – we printed the first edition of Wanted in Rome on 14 March 1985 – but 2010 was not a time for celebration. Like most other people we were too busy getting through the economic crisis to find time to look either backwards or forwards. This year however we have decided that it is time to move on, even though it is probably still too early to know for sure whether or not the economic recovery is really on the way. Figures, forecasts and statistics add up to conflicting scenarios and the political scene in Italy is still too uncertain for comfort. But what is sure is that in publishing and media to stay in the same place, when everything is moving fast around you, is to fall behind. This edition of the magazine, with completely new graphics, is therefore our first to be printed in colour throughout. We have wanted to do this for a while but decided that our investment should go into our websites rather than the paper edition of the magazine. We realised at the end of the 1990s that a magazine needed a website to survive. What has been less obvious is that websites also need a strong paper presence to feed them. This business is not either/or; it is more a question of adding each new technology to attract new readers. For example it is now possible to connect with people via Facebook and Twitter we never would have reached before. Now in a certain sense we are returning to our roots and have decided that it is time for another update to the magazine, our fifth in 26 years, this time into colour. This is not the only change in the new edition. We have also decided to increase the What’s On section and revive the much-missed page of museum opening times which we had thought (mistakenly) would work just as well on our website. The classified section has also changed completely since we first started. Conventional wisdom has it that classified advertising in paper media is dead; what we have found is that small ads have actually increased and that classified advertisers now use multiple channels, many of which are now free. In the past almost the only way to let an apartment privately was through the classified sections of a newspaper. Now most private rentals are done using internet, where speed is important. But internet has its Wanted in Rome 16 March 2011

limitations and often clients prefer the welltried formula of paper, with its slower pace and additional guarantees of privacy and security. Job offers in the local market have however held up well over the years. Internet provides a global exchange for jobs and labour, but it is often important to know that both the potential employer and employee have a sound local base rather than just a web presence. Those creating their own jobs and services (whether in private teaching or in the fitness and leisure sectors) have mushroomed and here classified advertising has boomed. So, sadly, has the number of people searching for employment, mainly in the domestic sector. We have more of “jobs wanted” ads than we can place in the magazine and only manage to find space for a fraction of those on our website. We still provide a personal service for classified advertisers, either over the telephone or in the office, but this has become a relatively smaller part of our core business. What has not changed over the decades is our feeling that local is still important in a globally-connected age. News of what is happening across the world is now available non-stop, but what is going on across the square or on the other side of Rome is still as difficult to discover now as it was 26 years ago. This is what we set out to provide a quarter of a century ago and this is what we are still doing today, and shall continue to do whether it is in the magazine, on our website, via Facebook, Twitter or whatever other media the future may provide. In the mid 1980s email was virtually unknown and Twitter would have been impossible to imagine. So here’s to a happy anniversary and all the new inventions the next quarter century will bring. ITALIAN UNIFICATION, 150 YEARS ON The 150th anniversary of unification comes at a delicate moment for Italy

O

n 17 March 1861, the new kingdom of Italy was proclaimed in Turin. It was the culmination of almost 50 years of struggles, some political, some revolutionary and some open war. Tomorrow’s holiday is not just a day off school and work; it is a moment for reflection on serious issues. The anniversary comes at a very delicate moment, partly because of the scandals that swirl round the prime minister, Silvio Berlusconi, but also because his closest ally, Umberto Bossi’s Lega Nord is decidedly lukewarm on the very idea of a united Italy. In the 1990s Bossi campaigned for the complete secession of what he calls “Padania”, Italy north of the Po river. Today he would like the 20 regions of Italy and the more than 8,000 municipalities to have much greater spending power or “fiscal federalism”. Many other Italians wonder what there is to celebrate. The head of the employers’ federation, Confindustria, Emma Marcegaglia said that given the economic situation, Italians can ill afford the luxury of taking a day off work and there have been differences been the minister of education and the single regional authorities as to whether the anniversary should be remembered studying its history in a classroom or on holiday. But if the commemorations are uncertain, the reality was far more precarious. Unification was the product of two very different movements, which would clash in the 20th century. The first was constitutionalism, which sought to introduce limits to the absolute power of all the rulers of the Italian peninsula. In 1848-49, for a brief period there were constitutions, even in papal Rome but then the optimism dissolved like spring snow. Rome and Naples returned to absolutism while Piedmont kept the Statuto even though King Charles Albert so hated the idea that an anointed king should have limits to his power that he refused to use the word costituzione. The other movement was a nationalist one which believed that the Italian nation existed and that it should become a single state and a great one at that. Some people wanted both a single Italy and constitutionalism but neither had the support of the masses. Most of the supporters of the Risorgimento were male, educated and middle to upper-middle class and surprisingly, given Bossi’s position today, more northern than southern. Some were liberal idealists who felt that a united Italy would give more freedom to all, and some were followers of Giuseppe Mazzini who were fighting for a democratic republic but would accept a constitutional monarchy as a first step. Others were new industrialists who saw that a bigger state would give them bigger markets and resources and international clout. The wily Camillo Cavour did not have any burning desire to unite the country and indeed had considerable misgivings about adding the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies with its burden of poverty and underdevelopment. His main interest was to increase the power and influence of the Kingdom of Piedmont. With a series of agreements with Napoleon III, Cavour enlisted French military support and created a situation where he could take over the small duchies of Modena and Parma and provoke a war with Austria in order to take Lombardy in 1859. The Grand Duchy of Tuscany followed and was annexed with a referendum. Both Napoleon and Cavour went back on their original agreements, the first making a separate peace with the French (which he had promised not to do), the second by invading the Papal State (which he had also promised not to do). The result was that Venetia remained under Austrian control and Emilia-Romagna, the Marches and Umbria were taken by the Piedmontese. The following year, Garibaldi sailed with his 1,000 followers, the Mille, from Quarto near Genoa to Marsala in Sicily and within six months had

Wanted in Rome 16 March 2011

defeated the Neapolitan forces and handed over the whole Kingdom of the Two Sicilies to King Victor Emmanuel. Garibaldi had some covert support from Cavour, who did not want to be seen to be helping a revolutionary, and some more overt support from the British navy as Britain had both idealistic and realistic reasons to support Italian unification. Many Britons liked the romantic idea of Garibaldi and his volunteers and some sort of revival of classical Italy; the government Giuseppe Garibaldi and Giuseppe Mazzini felt that a new Mediterranean power would help them balance the French, Austrians and Ottomans. So unification was hardly achieved by a mass movement. The French military helped the Piedmontese in an expert piece of Cavourian realpolitik; Cavour and the British supported a brilliant and lucky military move inspired by Garibaldi’s idealism. Much of the upper class was lukewarm as their lands and their privileges were by no means guaranteed under a new Piedmontese king and aggressively expanding middle class, while much of the peasantry went from indifference to hostility at the idea of changing rulers. Indeed, the rural south spent most of the next decade fighting a war to restore the Bourbons and the Kingdom of Naples. The Italian government dismissed this as mere “brigandage” but it cost more lives than the wars against the Austrians. Nonetheless, the new state did exist. As if to emphasise the fact that this was Piedmontese expansion as much as it was Italian unification, Victor Emmanuel II of Piedmont refused to accept the title of Victor Emmanuel I of Italy but kept his Piedmontese numbering. It is the foundation of this state – when the new “Italian” parliament, sitting in Turin (and conducting its sessions in French as well as Italian) proclaimed the new kingdom – that is being celebrated tomorrow. Even if the reality of an Italian nation did not exist in 1861, the idea most certainly did and, with the proclamation of the new kingdom, so did the state. In 1864 the capital was moved to Florence as somewhere more central geographically and more “Italian”. Then in 1866 Venice and Venetia were added after Austria was defeated by Prussia. Napoleon had gone from being an Italian ally to being the defender of the pope but in 1870, he too had to face the Prussians and Italy was able to take Rome. The final pieces of the jigsaw, Trentino and Trieste fell into place in 1918 after world war one. Mazzini’s dream of a republic was finally realised in a referendum in 1946 (and that is indeed a public holiday, 2 June), when the majority of Italians voted against the monarchy and sent the king and his heirs into exile. It was long and difficult process but no one, not even Bossi, would deny that Italy does exist today so a celebration is in order, but perhaps in a Cavourian fashion, moderately. James Walston On 7 and 8 April The American University of Rome is hosting an international conference on “Italy at 150”. Scholars from Europe and North America will discuss the consequence of unification for art and music as well as politics and economics. ST PATRICK’S DAY IN ROME On the occasion of the Irish national feast day, which this year happens to be an Italian national holiday also, the church of St Patrick’s on Via di Boncompagni 31 celebrates its 100th anniversary. St Patrick’s Day Mass at 10.00 will be presided over by Cardinal William Levada, who in addition to being the Vatican’s prefect of the congregation for the doctrine of the faith, has Irish roots. The Ranelagh Singers, a visiting choir from Dublin, contribute the music. Opened on 17 March 1911, St Patrick’s church was designed by Aristide Leonori and features a Latin inscription from the saint’s writings: Ut Christiani ita et Romani sitis, meaning As you are Christian so also be Roman. This dictum happens to be the motto of Rome’s Pontifical Irish College which inaugurates Villa Irlanda, a 12-bedroom guesthouse, during St Patrick’s week. The building offers bed-and-breakfast accommodation for individuals, families and groups, and is situated on the grounds of the college, which has been welcoming Irish visitors to Rome since its foundation in 1628. www.villairlandaroma.it. Each year as part of the celebrations, the Irish College stages a play in its theatre – this year’s production is The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas. Directed by Conor McGrath, the play takes place on 17 and 18 March at 20.00 and all are welcome. The year’s biggest party in Irish circles is the Celtic Ball, an annual black-tie event, which is both a charity fundraiser and a celebration of St Patrick’s Day for the Irish and friends of Ireland in Rome. Known for its live music, dancing and sartorial elegance, not to mention Guinness on tap, the 20th Celtic Ball takes place at the five-star Grand Hotel Parco dei Principi on 19 March. www.irishclubofrome.com.

CULTURAL COLLABORATION BETWEEN ITALY AND RUSSIA Italian premier Silvio Berlusconi and Russian president Dmitry Medvedev launched the Year of Russian language and culture in Italy and Italian language and culture in Russia when they attended the Aleksandr Deineka exhibition at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome on 16 February 2011. Comprising over 550 events in Italy and Russia, the programme includes exhibitions, concerts, plays and film festivals designed to appraise and exchange the cultural heritage of both nations. The exhibition From Icons to Malevich of artefacts from the Russian Museum in St Petersburg is on display in Palazzo Pitti in Florence until 30 April. In the autumn the Uffizi in Florence hosts the Madonna and Child painting by Italian Byzantine artist Coppo di Marcovaldo, on loan from Moscow’s Pushkin Museum. The initiative ends in late December with a performance of Verdi’s Requiem by the orchestra of Teatro alla Scala at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. Conducted by Daniel Barenboim, it is the first foreign orchestra to perform in the newly-restored theatre. For information on all events taking place see: www.beniculturali.it.

LAY CENTRE CELEBRATES 25 YEARS IN ROME This year the Lay Centre at Foyer Unitas celebrates its 25th anniversary in Rome. The centre was founded in 1986 by Donna Orsuto and Riekie van Velzen as a setting in which international lay students of theology could live and study in Rome. Its first home was just off Piazza Navona, then in 2001 it transferred to the grounds of the Irish College on the Coelian hill before moving to its current location near the Colosseum in 2009. From the outset this Roman Catholic institution has welcomed Protestant and Orthodox Christian students who study at the pontifical universities and institutes in Rome, and now includes students from Jewish and Muslim faiths. Its 20 residents gather daily in communal prayer in the centre’s chapel and they have regular opportunities to engage in theological discussions with visiting figures from Rome’s academic and ecclesial world. In addition to serving its students, the Lay Centre holds lectures throughout the year. A programme of lectures titled “Lay women and men: Called to transform the world from within” takes place every Thursday morning from 24 March to 14 April. The monument to Giuseppe Garibaldi on Rome’s Janiculum hill has been restored in time for the 150th anniversary of the unification of Italy. The statue of Garibaldi on horseback, which dates to 1895 and is the work of Florentine sculptor Emilio Gallori, is among 100 works on the Janiculum being restored in an €18.5 million programme. These include the bronze of Garibaldi’s Brazilian wife Anita, depicted on horseback with a baby in one hand and a pistol in the other. It was sculpted in 1932 by Mario Rutelli, the grandfather of former mayor of Rome Francesco Rutelli. The three-month restoration of the 25-metre monument to Garibaldi proved a challenge for the six experts. They found the Baveno granite to be contaminated with limescale which they treated with antioxidants and they discovered that water had seeped inside the statue and was slowly corroding the interior. One brave member of the team worked from inside the stomach of the horse, applying layers of paint and wax to seal it from further leaks.

DANCE BOLZANO CANDOCO DANCE COMPANY 23 March In Renditions, a triple bill performed by seven disabled and able-bodied dancers and choreographed by three international choreographers: Wendy Houstoun, Emanuel Gat and Sarah Michelson. To appreciate the CandoCo Dance Company, it has been said that one should discard all conventional notions of the dancing body. However this British contemporary dance company has been collecting positive critical and public acclaim since it was founded by Celeste Dandeker and Adam Benjamin in 1991. Their current programme is ambitious and stylistically mixed featuring Hangman, by New York-based Sarah Michelson which has been described as a powerful work, if not a likable one. Emanuel Gat’s In Translation is an abstract composition, set to Bach and interludes of silence. And Wendy Houstoun’s Imperfect Storm is a witty, self-referential piece about a group of actors trying out ideas for a production of The Tempest. Teatro Comunale, tel. 0471304111, www.nbtz.net.

FLORENCE MAGGIODANZA 24-2 27 March In Serata Sacra: a ballet triptych dedicated to the sense of the sacred with works choreographed by Francesco Ventriglia, Angelin Preljocaj and Andonis Foniadakis. The first piece by Ventriglia, who is the company’s new director, is entitled Stabat Mater, and is a pas-de-deux on music by Pergolesi. The starting point of Preljocaj’s Annonciation, which explores the theme of incarnation, is the idea that our perception of bodies is rooted in Christian imagery, which has marked western art and our representations of the flesh. He brings a sensual Virgin Mary to the stage where she encounters an androgynous and fascinating Archangel Gabriel. Foniadakis’ Selon Desir is danced to the soaring choruses of Bach’s St Matthew’s and St John’s Passion, which accompany the bodies that are repeatedly lifted to the sky in sign of redemption. Teatro Comunale, tel. 055213535, www.maggiofiorentino.com.

MILAN ROSSELLA BRESCIA AND STEFANO DE MARTINO 30 March In Cassandra, choreography by Luciano Cannito. The work is based on the book of the same name by Christa Wolf who retells the story of the fall of Troy, but from the point of view of the woman whose visionary powers earned her contempt and scorn. Cannito has transposed the action into a Sicilian town of the 1950s, and just as Wolf does in her novel, he makes an urgent call to examine the past in order to insure a future. Teatro Smeraldo, tel. 0236639300, www.smeraldo.it.

A quiet and secluded setting. Recommended in summer, when it’s possible to dine under the pergola. If it’s winter and you want to eat inside don’t forget to book in advance, as the premises are quite small. The cuisine is surprisingly adventurous. Perfect for romantic dinners. The restaurant’s specialty is that, along with the dish you have ordered, you will be served a small portion of the plate your partner has chosen, giving you the chance to taste your friend’s choice.
