ROME AND PHILADELPHIA MAKE MEDICAL HISTORY FORMER ROME MAYOR IGNAZIO MARINO WAS INSTRUMENTAL IN ESTABLISHING THE WORLD’S FIRST DUAL INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL DEGREE
Marco Venturini Professor Ignazio Marino, Senior Vice President Thomas Jefferson University, Professor Mark Tykocinski, Provost, Thomas Jefferson University, and Professor Stephen Klasko, President and CEO, Thomas Jefferson University, signing the agreement in November 2018.
R
ome’s Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (UCSC) and the Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia have created a pioneering international medical degree programme, hailed as the first of its kind in the world. The agreement gives medical students at UCSC the chance to earn a Bachelor of Science degree from Thomas Jefferson University and Doctor of Medicine degrees from the Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University and UCSC, all within six years.

Current medical education requirements differ vastly between the US and Europe. Medical students in the US must earn a four-year undergraduate degree and then a four-year medical degree in order to practice medicine in America. However medical students in Italy have no undergraduate degree requirement and can earn a degree within six years, followed by three months of internships and state exams. Rome’s Policlinico Gemelli Hospital, located on the UCSC campus, also signed the agreement, which gives UCSC students the
Medicine opportunity to travel to Thomas Jefferson University to meet the US undergraduate requirements needed to pursue a medical degree. Wanted in Rome put a series of questions to two of the principal architects of the deal. Professor Ignazio Marino. Professor of Surgery, Sidney Kimmel Medical College, Thomas Jefferson University. Senior Vice President for Strategic Affairs, Thomas Jefferson University and Jefferson Health. WiR: What is at the core of the agreement? Professor Marino: In May 2017 Thomas Jefferson University and Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (UCSC) signed a general collaboration agreement but on 11 November 2018 a much more concrete agreement was sealed to launch the so-called joint Jefferson/ UCSC “3+3” programme. According to the agreement, students who are enrolled in the international English language Medicine & Surgery track at Università Cattolica in Rome may be selected to complete a sixyear programme that allows them to earn a triple degree: a Bachelor of Science degree from Jefferson, a Medical degree from Jefferson Sidney Kimmel Medical College, and a Medical degree from UCSC. This will be accomplished taking half of the classes in Rome and half in Philadelphia, experiencing both cultural and academic environments. At the end of the programme, graduates will be allowed to practice medicine both in Europe and in the United States, which is Professor Stephen Klasko and Professor Ignazio Marino at the signing ceremony.
what makes the programme so unique and special – a project attempted by many in the past, but never accomplished until Jefferson and UCSC partnered. We now look forward to welcoming the first students at Jefferson in 2019. What scenarios create?

programme
The agreement will train tomorrow’s physicians, professionals who will face new challenges in a global world. Our programme’s graduates will be free to practice medicine in the 28 European states, as well as in the US or to train further in two continents, applying for residences without having to take further tests or worrying about having their degree acknowledged abroad. Our students will be exposed to very different academic, clinical and research scenarios and will be able to take the best out of each system. I wish I had been given this unique chance back in my day. Instead, after graduating in Italy (precisely at UCSC in Rome), I had to study hard and take several tests before being considered and accepted at a US institute to complete my specialty training. Our agreement allows students to save time, become fluent in another language and above all earn an incredible advantage over regular graduates, especially when seeking training and work opportunities overseas. The agreement has received public praise by the Italian Ministry for Education, University and Research which has expressed its deep appreciation of double degree programmes. What was your role in drawing up the agreement? I am a Cattolica University alumnus. I graduated there in 1979 and am very proud of my background. After my residency, in the early 1980s, I moved first to England, later to the US, to train in organ transplantation. It wasn’t easy. I remember studying very hard to be accepted. Today, I am Professor of Surgery at Jefferson Sidney Kimmel Medical College and Senior Vice President for Strategic Affairs at Jefferson. In my capacity I immediately thought that such a programme could offer an incredible chance to medical students. This 5 | Jan 2019 • Wanted in Rome
Medicine was obviously possible thanks to the vision and flexible thinking of Jefferson and UCSC leaderships. Dr Steven K. Klasko, president of Thomas Jefferson University and CEO of Jefferson Health WiR: How do you foresee the future of the medical sector in the next decades? Dr Klasko: I believe that healthcare will once and for all join the consumer and digital revolution that has transformed all other industries. Specifically, I believe that by 2022, 25 per cent of hospitals with $1 billion of net revenue will be providing real time genomic based decision support. By 2024, 20 per cent of the population with chronic conditions will be relying on virtual health assistants for wellness and health management. By 2025, 35 per cent of all care in Europe and the US will be delivered virtually. By 2027, for the first time, the majority of interactions will be virtual or remote and the majority of those involved AI or machine cognition applications. I also believe that physicians will be global, that a physician practicing in Italy or China will be able to practice in the United States and vice versa and that, just as we do with pilots we will know they are competent through simulation and technical/teamwork assessment technology. What is the goal of the deal with UCSC? In many ways, our partnership started as a match.com of shared values. Our mission is “we improve lives.” Our vision
is to reimagine healthcare, education and discovery to create unparalleled value. And our three prime values are: put people first, do the right thing, be bold and think differently. That mission, vision and values synched up very nicely with that of Cattolica University. At the end of the day, though, the relationship gets down to people, and working with Professor Walter Ricciardi and the leadership of Cattolica University and Gemelli Hospital along with my senior vice president, Professor Ignazio Marino created a real opportunity to start the process of creating a global physician and a global healthcare system with two great forward thinking universities. Will the deal also involve financial and scientific exchange? Along with the educational programme and the dual degree programme, we look to expand this partnership across four pillars—education, research, innovation and clinical activity. We look forward to joint research projects across the European Union and the United States attracting foundation dollars from global foundations, such as the Gates Foundation, from European funding sources such as Horizon 2020, and from US philanthropy and foundations. We also plan on breaking down borders clinically, including a global kidney exchange that will open the doors across the EU and USA (and potentially other countries) to expand eligible donors for kidney transplantation. Finally, innovation, information technology and augmented intelligence know no boundaries, and we are excited about leveraging the innovation and transformative ideas at both institutions across the globe. The entire Jefferson and UCSC delegation.

here was goodness in the air as visitors thronged the Christmas market at St Paul’s Within the Walls, the American Episcopalian Church of Rome, on the first day in December. The annual market is a firm fixture on the city’s expat calendar, with proceeds going to support the work

Humanitarian and the JNRC – founded in 1982 – play an increasingly vital role in providing friendship and support to refugees who make their difficult way to Rome. Rev. Austin K. Rios, rector of St Paul’s, welcomed guests to the Christmas fair as warm chatter filled the church’s lofty ceilings. Children sold homemade cake and cookies; other stands included more exotic fare, from ethnic cuisine to ornate jewellery, with a thoroughly international mix of stallholders and browsers. The event provided an opportunity to highlight the work of the church’s day centre for refugees and asylum seekers, which each day welcomes up to 250 people, half of them homeless. In addition to offering hospitality, a central part of the JNRC mission is to “provide a support network and to encourage and empower refugees to build new lives.” One of the market stalls offered a selection of brightly-coloured cushion covers, table cloths and bags, the work of Rome’s Sewing Cooperative, established in 2017 by Lydia Witt, a professional dressmaker originally from Ohio. After a decade working for Broadway and the New York City Ballet, Witt secured a Fulbright scholarship in 2016 and made the life-changing decision to travel to Rome. She volunteered at the JNRC where she taught professionallevel dressmaking, as well as interviewing refugees at the Baobab mobile refugee centre near Tiburtina station. She soon became aware of how displaced people longed for the sense of normality provided by employment and using their existing skills. After securing funds from a church in Kentucky and the US embassy in Italy, Witt purchased six sewing machines and launched The Sewing Cooperative, originally based at the JNRC. She discovered that aside from the satisfaction of learning new skills, many tailors found a therapeutic joy in the familiar act of being able to sew once again. Witt was also given a helping hand from Rome’s Galleria Sala 1 whose owner, American Mary Angela Schroth, offered
her gallery as a place to work last summer. Witt repaid the gesture by holding an “interactive installation”, allowing visitors to ask questions and observe the tailors as they created garments made predominantly from colourful west African wax print. At the St Paul’s fair Witt was joined by Lassina, who has been a member of The Sewing Cooperative for more than four months. From Koulikoro in western Mali, Lassina arrived in Sicily on a migrant boat from Libya in 2016. Now aged 20, he began tailoring in Mali when he was 14 and, after a couple of years away from his trade, he is happy to be once again cutting and stitching in Rome. The Sewing Cooperative is based in a third-floor studio overlooking the Mercato Centrale food emporium on Via Giolitti, in the multi-ethnic Esquilino district. Lassina is the newest member of the team whose original member is Daouda, aged 26, from the Ivory Coast. Daouda is softly-spoken and earnest with a gentle manner, and obviously takes pride in his work. He arrived in Italy in 2016 after fleeing ethnic tensions in his country, travelling through Libya before making the perilous journey across the Mediterranean on a rubber dinghy. Daouda is joined at The Sewing Cooperative by several other tailors, two compatriots – Abou and Bamba – and another two, less frequently, from Senegal and Gambia. The team works with clients who co-design their made-to-measure clothes before setting off to the nearby markets around Piazza Vittorio to choose their fabric. Finished items vary in price from €35 to €100 and are ready for collection or shipping within 48 hours. This fast turnaround favours the bulk of customers who are on vacation from the US. Many clients arrive after subscribing to a three-hour “fashion experience”, advertised through Airbnb, which involves meeting the refugee tailors and learning about sustainable fashion. However, Witt is keen to point out that it is not a “refugee tour”, rather a chance for “exchange and dialogue” with the cooperative’s professional tailors. 9 | Jan 2019 • Wanted in Rome
Humanitarian Sadam cooking falafel at Hummustown In and Out on Via Ostilia near the Colosseum.
The international flavour at the St Paul’s Christmas market was further enriched by the enticing aroma from the stand operated by Hummustown, another refugee success story in Rome. Founded in March 2017, this catering start-up gives Syrian refugees economic independence, social inclusion and dignity through cooking their native cuisine. The driving force behind the project is a dynamic duo of sisters, Shaza and Loma Saker, both of whom were born in Damascus but were raised in Rome from early childhood.
organisational, business and media skills with a genuine humanitarian concern. The 18 refugees at Hummustown come from a range of backgrounds, and organisers stress that the project is open to all Syrians, regardless of ethnicity or religion. The team, which ranges in age from early 20s to 50, comprises five women and 13 men, including a husband and wife. They came to Hummustown through word of mouth. The women are the principal cooks, while the role of the men varies from food preparation to packaging and distribution.
The Saker sisters are clearly passionate about the project, mixing their considerable

Humanitarian the Hummustown philosophy is assisting Syrian refugees to integrate by helping them with the difficulties of the Italian language and Rome’s bureaucracy. All fled devastating scenes of war and death, making their way to Italy either by boat or by foot, in some cases moving on to northern Europe before being sent back to Rome. One of the younger members, 26-year-old university degree graduate Sadam from Daraa in southwest Syria, lost his entire family in the conflict before being welcomed into Hummustown.
(fresh red peppers, melagrane molasses, ground walnuts, breadcrumbs and olive oil) and mutabbal (smoked eggplant, yoghurt, sesame paste, salt, olive oil).
Two weeks after the St Pauls’ Christmas fair, Hummustown launched an eatery in the shadow of the Colosseum, on the Via Ostilia corner of Via di S. Giovanni in Laterano, where diners can eat in or take away. “Hummustown In and Out” serves food all day and stays open until the wee hours at the weekend, with an eye on the district’s late bars and clubs.
Many organisations and cooperatives assisting migrants in Italy have grave concerns about the so-called Salvini decree, a new anti-immigration law named after Italy’s deputy premier, interior minister and leader of the far-right Lega. The controversial legislation removes humanitarian protection for those not eligible for refugee status but are otherwise unable to return home.
Parallel to this development, Hummustown also opened its first industrial kitchen in the Tuscolana area of the city, following a recent fundraising drive. This is where the bulk of its food for distribution and catering is produced, having previously used private kitchens hosted by the project’s patrons. Fundraising continues however, with donors invited to choose from a wish-list ranging from new dishwashers and refrigerators to used pots and pans, via the project’s GoFundMe page on its website.
Milisic-Stanley says the decree will “have the affect of increasing the JNRC’s existing caseload by throwing people out of the migrant centres earlier, and not allowing access to the services that they so desperately need.” She said the JNRC is “deeply concerned about vulnerable youth, and humanitarian status card holders presently in training and school, and others who need more time to integrate.”
In addition to catering for events, Hummustown has weekly appointments around the capital, including the World Food Programme (WFP) 09.30-14.00 every Tuesday and Thursday, and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) every other Friday 09.30-14.00, as well as its Aventino Lunches, enjoyed primarily by employees of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), at nearby Lele and Marta Caffè, Viale Aventino 57, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Organisers are keen to point out – particularly to Italians – that Syria’s refined cuisine uses many of the same Mediterranean ingredients as Italian food. In addition to hummus and falafel, Hummustown offers lesser-known specialties such as muhammara 12 | Jan 2019 • Wanted in Rome
The JNRC fundraiser and programme coordinator Annika Milisic-Stanley says: “In different ways, Hummustown and The Sewing Cooperative both achieve the JNRC goals of serving the needs and aspirations of refugees and asylum seekers.”
To that end, she says: “We are happy to collaborate with any initiative that helps refugees and aspirational migrants to integrate, become self-sufficient and live a life of dignity in Rome.”

RYDER CUP COMES TO ROME IN 2022 ROME WILL WELCOME THE GOLF WORLD’S GREATEST TEAM EVENT, THE RYDER CUP, FOR THE FIRST TIME AS ITALY BEGINS TO EMBRACE THE SPORT
Ed White Tommy Fleetwood and Francesco Molinari, together known as “Moliwood.”
Rory McIlroy will attract the attention of many, most eyes will focus on the home hero Francesco Molinari and his fruitful partnership with England’s Tommy Fleetwood.
W
hile Rome may be used to the glitz and glamour of major sporting events, it is now preparing for the first time to welcome golf’s greatest team event, the men’s Ryder Cup, which is played bi-annually between Europe and the United States and switches hosting duties between the two. In September 2022 Rome will become the first Italian city to host the Ryder Cup, whose leading names are expected to attract fans from across the globe. Work has already begun at the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Guidonia Montecelio, north-east of the capital, to ensure the facilities can cope with the clamour for tickets, the demands of an international television audience and the special assistance required by the world’s best players. However, while the likes of multi-major winners Tiger Woods, Jordan Speith and
14 | Jan 2019 • Wanted in Rome
The pair claimed nine points between them in last year’s win for Europe in Paris, and their partnership coined the now famous Moliwood tagline as supporters from across the continent revelled in their performances. Molinari, who won all five of his matches at Le Club National in Paris, will be the poster-boy of the competition. The 36-yearold became the first Italian to win one of golf’s four majors last year when he won the British Open Championship. He also capped a dream 2018 by being crowned the Race to Dubai champion after adding the BMW PGA Championship, his sixth win on the European Tour, and the Quicken Loans National, his first on America’s PGA Tour, to his trophy cabinet. The Italian will still need to qualify for selection to the Ryder Cup but, following his performance last year, it would be inconceivable for the captain not to find him a place in the line-up as a wildcard at the very least. Indeed, the name Molinari could feature twice on the leaderboard at Marco Simone should Francesco’s brother Edoardo show his highly capable form and earn selection for the second time following his debut in 2010. Although, given the apparent “bromance” between Molinari and

Fleetwood, Europe would hope that three was not a crowd. Golf has yet to find its place in mainstream Italian sport, and according to the Italian National Olympic Committee it does not even feature in the ten most popular participation sports in the country. The number of registered golfers in Italy dropped from 100,000 to 90,000 between 2010 and 2017, and 90,000 is incredibly low compared to other elite sporting nations in Europe. England has 640,000, Germany 625,000 and France 410,000. Italy is 13th on the list of participation in Europe, with the highest ratio of population to golf course (217,037 to every course) in the top 20 nations. Golf has long been seen as an exclusive luxury in Italy, with just 275 courses across the country – 15 per cent of the number in England, 30 per cent of Germany and half the number in Scotland. Italy’s participation rate in the sport is also the lowest of the top 20 European nations, with only 0.15 per cent of the population playing the game. This trend is reflected in Rome’s limited number of golf courses, all of which are exclusive. Despite golf’s lack of broad popular appeal in Italy, the success of the Molinari brothers has meant more than simply hosting the Italian Open once a year. The growth of the game, and the publicity surrounding the Ryder Cup, has been noted by the pair.
“People realise how big the Ryder Cup is, especially for a small golfing country like Italy,” said Edoardo. “There’s been a lot of news in the media, a lot of people are talking about it. I think it’s going to be a unique Ryder Cup because the Italian people are very passionate about any sport and I think when it comes to golf, you will see support that has been unheard of and something that’s never been done before. “If you look at the Italian Open, where it was five or six years ago to where it is now, it’s just a completely different event. Hopefully we can keep going for a few more years, hopefully more and more players will come and play and just raise the awareness for golf and Italian golf.” Francesco added: “I remember when I was a teenager things were very different, it was almost impossible to watch golf on TV. It’s a nation crazy about sports in general, motor racing and many other things, and I think golf is becoming part of it. “We’ve got some unbelievable places, some really good golf courses that are probably not as well known in the world as they should be. They’re doing great with the Italian Open, hopefully it will boost golf tourism in Italy as well.” Rome won’t need to look far for inspiration. The Ryder Cup in Paris was an overwhelming success, with huge crowds cheering the triumphant home players. More than 60,000 people descended on the French 15 | Jan 2019 • Wanted in Rome
History capital to watch the competition unfold, with an American contingent making up around seven per cent of the total. It was reported that up to 25,000 spectators had travelled from the UK alone. Of course, large numbers provide their own challenges, but the French course adopted the tightest security measures seen since 2002 at The Belfry in England, with over 9km of fencing and 16.5km of crowdcontrol barriers in operation. The transformation of the Marco Simone club will take similar shape. Construction began in summer last year with architects, engineers and agronomists starting work on the first phase of the project, which will see the erection of a state-of-the-art venue. The Rome site, controlled by the Biagiotti family of fashion-house fame, will undergo a complete overhaul over the next three and a half years. An entirely new golf course will be in place to stage the event, co-designed by Tom Fazio II (the son of the original architect at the club) and the European Golf Design company. The standards of the Ryder Cup have placed demands on the course to produce new roads, lakes, cart paths and irrigation systems in the design as well as accommodation and hospitality suites – all of which will transform the course into one of Europe’s premier complexes. The course took shape originally in the 1980s when fashion designer and entrepreneur Laura Biagiotti started a project to transform 150 hectares of Roman countryside, 16 km from central Rome. She also created 27 supreme golf holes surrounding the Marco Simone castle, which dates back to 1,000 AD. The present transformation project has been divided into four phases, with the golf course scheduled to be finished in the spring of 2020. Despite the ongoing construction, members of the club will still be able to play 18 holes at the course throughout the works. Describing the upcoming event as “epic”, Lavinia Biagiotti Cigna, president of Marco Simone Golf & Country Club said: “We are 16 | Jan 2019 • Wanted in Rome
working to build a strong legacy for the next generation of golfers”, adding that the Ryder Cup represents “a unique opportunity for Rome and Italy.” The Italian Open, which was first staged at the course in 1994, will then head to Rome in 2021 as a precursor to the Ryder Cup the following September. The 43rd edition will be held at Whistling Straits, Wisconsin in America from 25-27 September 2020. The US holds the better record in the competition, which started in 1927, with 26 victories compared to Europe’s 14. In the current version, each team has 12 players with fourballs and foursomes taking place on the opening two days before a thrilling final day of singles matches decides whether the Trophy goes to Europe or the USA. SKIING NEAR ROME
The mountains in central Italy offer skiers in Rome a closer alternative to the Alps
T
here are many skiing resorts within an easy drive of Rome along the Apennines in Lazio and Abruzzo. Before setting off, check all resort websites for avalanche warnings and snow conditions.
Campocatino
This relatively small ski resort is one of the oldest in the Apennines and is located in the province of Frosinone, about 100 km southeast of Rome. It has 12 km of slopes, located in a karst valley at 1,800 m. It has a chairlift and three ski lifts. The Canalino and the Vermicano slopes are connected and form a good slope of 1,500 m. www.campocatino.eu.
Campo di Giove
Campo di Giove is on the western slope of the Majella natural park in Abruzzo, about 170 km from Rome. A chair lift and a ski lift take skiers up to about 1,800 m. Two bars / restaurants are located along the way. The numerous slopes are of different levels: the Serra Campanile is easy and suitable for kids, the Le Capre, Pareti Rosse and Delle Signore are of medium difficulty, while the Porrara is one of the most fascinating and challenging black runs in the Apennines. There are two school camps, served by conveyor lifts, where children are introduced to skiing and snowboarding. There is also a snow park, a snow playground for young skiers called Kinder Park Giovilandia, and a synthetic ice skating rink open throughout the year. www.comunecampodigiove.it.
Campo Felice
Campo Felice is in the central Apennines of Abruzzo, located within the Sirente-Velino regional natural park, about 113 km from Rome. This ski resort is part of the Tre Nevi area, along with Ovindoli and Campo Imperatore, and is one of the favourite destinations for Romans. It offers 30 km of Alpine skiing of various levels, served by about 10 chair-lifts and several drag lifts for children, which can carry up to 18,000 skiers per hour and guarantee quick access to the slopes. A modern snowmaking system with 250 artificial snow cannons cover over 16 kms. A must for snowboarders is the Swup Snowpark with its jumps and breathtaking passages. www.campofelice.it.

Campo Imperatore
Campo Imperatore was the first ski resort to be developed in the Apennines. It is on the Gran Sasso mountain about 120 km from Rome and at 2,200 m is one of the highest in Italy. A cableway takes skiers from Fonte Cerreto to Campo Imperatore and two chair lifts take them to five panoramic slopes. It offers 15 km of Alpine skiing and 60 km of Nordic skiing. There is also a snow park with half-pipe and boarder cross slopes for snowboarders. www.ilgransasso.it.
Campo Staffi
Campo Staffi is located in Filettino, 100 km from Rome. Its facilities include two chair lifts, three ski lifts and one manovia, which take skiers to 1,500-2,000 m. A 10-km long path is available for lovers of cross-country skiing. A shuttle service connects Filettino to the nearby villages. www.campostaffi.it.
Monte Livata
The Alpine skiing areas of Monte Livata, located about 75 km east of Rome, include Campo Minio and Monna dell’Orso. The slopes, which run from Fossa dell’Acero to Campo dell’Osso, are famous for cross-country skiing and are particularly suitable for families. Three drag lifts take skiers to the top of the mountain, from where they can choose an Alpine skiing descent or a snowboarding and tubing track. The traditional cross-skiing circuit goes from Campo dell’Osso to Campaegli. www.livata.com.

Ovindoli
Ovindoli is located between Rome and L’Aquila in Abruzzo, about 130 km from the capital in the Sirente-Velino regional natural park. Some of the longest cross-country skiing slopes in central Italy are in the Altopiano delle Rocche which connects Ovindoli with Rocca di Mezzo. The Magnola mountain (1,400-2,220 m), offers 30 km of Alpine skiing, served by modern and efficient lifts. The slopes in the Tre Nevi ski area are of all levels and there are some challenging black runs. There is the Magnola upper park (1,980 m) as well as the lower park, located along the Dolce Vita slope (1,650 m). Ovindoli also has a very efficient snowmaking system, which perfect artificial snow even when natural snow is lacking. www.ovindolimagnola.it.
Pescasseroli
Located in the heart of the Abruzzo national park about 160 km from Rome, this resort offers 20-km of skiing, divided in 14 slopes for all abilities, including two difficult black runs, six red or intermediate slopes and six blue or easy ones for beginners. The 100-km long slope of Alto Sangro crosses the municipalities of Pescasseroli, Pescocostanzo, Aremogna, Pizzalto and Monte Pratello. The resort has three chair lifts and two ski lifts. www.sciareapescasseroli.it.
Roccaraso
Roccaraso, which is about equidistant from Rome and Naples, is one of the major skiing resorts in the Abruzzo. It is the heart of the largest ski area in central Italy, the Alto Sangro area, which includes 160 km of slopes and 36 lifts. Founded in 1910, Roccaraso’s skiing resort still hosts prestigious international competitions. Its numerous slopes include some that are suitable for children. www.roccaraso.net.
Terminillo
This limestone mountain (2,215 m) is one of the few resorts north of Rome, close to Rieti and about 100 km from the capital. Since it was made fashionable by Mussolini in the 1930s it has been a tourist destination for passionate skiers, and it is still one of the favourite winter resorts for Rome’s skiers. It has one cable car, three chair lifts and a conveyor belt, as well as over 40 km of steep slopes for Alpine skiing and 20 km of perfectly beaten Nordic skiing slopes, which are also illuminated at night. Its variegated flora and fauna make it an ideal place for excursions, nature trails and other sporting activities, such as hiking and mountain races. It has a high-altitude riding school with horse-drawn sleds, and the possibility to rent powerful quads, which offer adventurous excursions on the snowy paths. www.monteterminillo.net.

On 16 October 1943 Pollak and his family were among the 1,023 Jews deported from Rome’s Ghetto district to Auschwitz concentration camp, from which he never returned. Daniel Buren project at Palazzo De Angelis. Rendering Studio DIM associati Firenze.
art news DANIEL BUREN DESIGNS MONUMENTAL WORK IN CENTRAL ROME French conceptual artist Daniel Buren has been commissioned to create a monumental work which will grace the blind façade of Palazzo De Angelis in Rome’s historic centre. Located on Via delle Muratte, between Via del Corso and the Trevi Fountain, the Art Deco-style building is currently being converted into a boutique hotel by the Spanish Iberostar chain. Buren was invited by the owners of the building, Leggiero Real Estate, to create a design to cover the 370-sqm area. The Omaggio a Roma work, which stems from an idea by entrepreneur Salvatore Leggiero, will be developed under the supervision of Rome’s Nomas Foundation and is expected to be complete by this summer. Buren’s design is described as a “game of geometry, light and colour” that will be visible during the day as a complete fresco but illuminated at night so that shapes and colours become “luminous presences”. In 2016 Buren created a large-scale rainbow flag installation for the Par Tibi, Roma, Nihil exhibition on the Palatine Hill. Paolo). ATAC has leased out the three buildings to Ninetynine Urban Value, the marketing company specialising in the temporary re36 | Jan 2019 • Wanted in Rome
assignment of disused spaces, known for its projects in Rome such as the ongoing Palazzo degli Esami in Trastevere and the now-closed Guido Reni District in Flaminio. Under the agreement, ATAC will rent out the properties on a renewable eight-month basis before putting the buildings on the market in 2021. The total rent for eight months is €60,000 with ATAC receiving an additional 25 per cent of the revenue from ticket sales into the premises. The industrial venues, which are set to host festivals, installations and markets, will have new names for the duration of their cultural use. The 5,000-sqm depot in Piazza Bainsizza has become PratiBus District, the 11,000sqm two-storey storehouse in Tuscolana becomes Ragusa Off, and the 7,000-sqm depot on Via Severo is now S. Titled Artemisia, the book was written by Nathalie Ferlut and illustrated by Tamia Baudoin, both from France, and is now available in Italian. She is joined in the carriage by her 18-yearold daughter Prudenzia who persists with questions about her mother’s tragic past and fame in a maledominated art world. The book has been published in Italy by Fandango and retails at €17.

rome TEATRO dell’opera di roma anna bolena by Donizetti 20 feb-1 march
This Russian opera is conducted by Valery Gergiev with an almost all-Russian cast. It is a new La Scala production directed by Mario Martone. The opera, based on the Moscow Uprising of 1682, was incomplete when Mussorgsky died in 1881 and finished by Rimsky Korsakov in 1882. Because of RimskyKorsakov’s considerable cuts and re-workings it was then revised and orchestrated by Shostakovich
A new production by the Teatro dell’Opera, conducted by Riccardo Frizza and directed by Andrea De Rosa. Alex Esposito sings the part of Henry VIII, Maria Agresta and Valentina Varriale of Anne Boleyn and Carmela Remigio of Jane Seymour. This is the second of the four Tudor operas by Donizetti. It was an overwhelming success when it premiered in Milan in 1830 at the Teatro Carcano. De Rosa directed another of Donizetti’s Tudor operas, Maria Stuarda, in an austere but much applauded production for the Teatro dell’Opera in spring 2017. The exhibition also highlights the international film industry’s use of Swiss clichés such as bank vaults, mountain chalets and romantic lakesides. The exhibition is accompanied by a programme of screenings and talks throughout January. Teatro dei Dioscuri. Via Piacenza 1, www.teatrodeidioscuri.com. 47 | Jan 2019 • Wanted in Rome

WANTED junior inROME Lord of the Flies island made by Floriana De Giovanni and Gaia Faelli.
Found poems by students of The New School Rome Year 9 students, aged 13, have created ‘found poems’ using text from the novel Lord of the Flies. The echoes died away
They let the fire out
The echoes died away, There was silence. Something dark was fumbling along. The intentness of his gaze drew all eyes. The creature stepped from mirage onto clear sand, The darkness was not all shadow.
The fire was dead, the fire was right out, Smokeless and dead. The watchers were gone. The horizon stretched, impersonal once more, Barren of all but the faintest trace of smoke.
The creature was a party of boys, Each wore a square black cap. Hidden by black cloaks. Complexions of newly washed plums. They halted. Gasping, Sweating, Swaying. The boy came forward With his cloak flying. He peered into complete darkness. The echoes died away, There was silence. Ottavia Minucci

On the edge of the pinks cliffs He screamed at the ship, “Come back! Come back!” His voice rose insanely, “Come back! Come back!” Ralph looked at the boys with unblinking eyes, “They let the fire out”, he said. “They let the fire out.” Livia LaCava Kill the beast! Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood! The movement began to beat like a steady pulse. Roger ceased to be a pig. The ring yawned emptily. The throb and stamp of a single organism.
The blow of a gigantic whip, A tone in agony. Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood! The terror rose, Thick, urgent, blind. The blue white scar jagged above them. The littl’uns screamed. One broke the ring. A thing Crawling out of the forest. It came darkly. The shrill screaming. The beast stumbled. Kill the beast! Meg Axworthy The Beast Clouds opened, Let down a waterfall, Water bounded, Leaves tore. It poured. A cold shower. Figures staggered away. The beast. Blood. The beast. Sand staining with blood. The beast, it was. Blood, blood, blood. Agnese Girolamo Saint Simon Towards midnight The rain ceased. The clouds drifted away. Then the breeze died too. There was no noise. The sound of water was still. A streak of phosphorescence. The clear water. The clear sky.

Avocado mania in Rome Coming all the way from the South American mountains to our tabletops and restaurants, the exotic fruit has become famous thanks to it being packed full of vitamins, antioxidants and energy. It’s versatile, healthy and most definitely the food of the moment. Here are five places in Rome where you can eat and drink delicious avocado-based recipes. Écru A raw restaurant, cafe and bakery, Écru is also an art gallery and cookery school. For antipasti you can try the guacamole express, which is freshly prepared (€8), while for a main course we loved the avocado tartare that’s served two ways – with Sicilian papaya, thyme and lemon balm, or with radish, raisins and thyme – and that comes with a fresh vegetable rice roulade and crackers made with wheat and sprouts (€12). On the menu you’ll also find the raw sandwich, made with avocado, caper cream, caramelised onion and wild herbs (€7 with raw bread or €6 with organic brown bread). As for the soups, you must taste the avocado gazpacho with coriander, cucumber and courgette (€10), and try the avocado, cocoa and almond milk smoothie (€5.50) or the avocado, celery and kiwi juice (€5). Mon-Wed 10.00-20.00, Thurs-Sat 10.00-22.00, Sun 11.00-20.00.
Fiore Crudo e Vapore This restaurant has an open kitchen and a lovely terrace with a vegetable garden, where you can relax and enjoy your meal during the weekend. The cuisine is traditional but fuses vegetarian and raw cooking styles, giving life to organic ingredients and nutritional cooking. Fiore serves raw antipasti, avocado tartare with radish, raisins and almond crackers (€11) and an avocado basket filled with white cabbage, citrus fruits and crunchy pine nuts (€12). There’s also a raw sea food option: prawn carpaccio served with an avocado salsa and mayonnaise (€26). If you feel like a salad, try the avocado, smoked salmon, mixed seeds, sprouts of the day with a raspberry vinegar dressing, or the red quinoa salad with mixed leaves, rocket, chickpeas, grated carrot and red turnips, sprouts and goji berries (€12). Open daily 12.30 to midnight.
Eggs At this bistro created by Puntarella Rossa and Zum in Trastevere, one avocado dish is proving particularly popular:
the avocado stone is removed and an egg is put in its place which is then cooked at 64 degrees (making it similar to a poached egg, but a little softer), and then pistachios from Bronte and salted ricotta garnish the tasty dish (€10). On the day menu there’s also the avocado panino which is made with organic eggs and crunchy guanciale (pig’s cheek) from Mangalica pigs (Hungarian, tender pork) for €10. Open daily 20.00-23.00.
Gelateria Fatamorgana Not just an ice cream parlour, but also a cookery school where preservatives, emulsifiers and colourings are banned. The ice cream is totally natural and gluten-free. The brand, thought up by Maria Agnese Spagnuolo, is well known for its original recipes. There are 300 flavours to choose from, where classics like zabaione and chocolate are paired with cumin, and Lapsang Souchong tea is combined with oil and ratafia wine. As for an avocado ice cream, you can try it with lime and white wine, which is low-calorie and, as they recommend, goes perfectly with the Venezuelan chocolate, pineapple and ginger ice cream, or with the more alternative Pensiero (pear and gorgonzola ice cream). Two scoops cost €2.50, three €3.50, four €4.40 and five for €5. Open daily midday to midnight.
Grezzo •raw chocolate• You can’t miss raw patisserie Grezzo‘s menu, which is the first place in the world to have created an ice cream that is entirely raw, made with only almond and pistachio milks, dry and fresh fruit and coconut sugar. At Grezzo you can order the Germoglio, a multi-layered raw dessert – the base is made with avocado reduced in cream and sweetened with agave and mint syrup, the next layer is a fresh cherry compote, and it’s topped with raw cocoa and coconut sugar (€5.50). There’s also a Rawpuccino on the menu that’s made with avocado, raw cocoa from Ecuador, vanilla and cinnamon (€6). Open daily 11.00-23.00, and Fri-Sat 11.00 until midnight.
