What is Ismael Magazine?

By the grace of Allah Ta'ala, Waqifeen-e-Nau are now spread across the globe, many of whom are studying in their respective fields while others have already fulfilled their pledge of dedicating their lives for the Jama’at. There are many who are Missionaries, practising Doctors, Television producers, Architects, Graphic designers, Engineers, Accountants and much more.

Ismael is an international magazine, which was launched in 2012 by Hazrat Khalifatul-Masih the fifthaba specifically for the Waqifeen-e-Nau around the world. At this auspicious occasion, addressing the Waqifeen-e-Nau Huzoor-e-Anwaraba wrote:

“The magazine has been named as “ISMAEL”, which reminds us of the sacrifices made by Hazrat Ismaelas and by Hazrat Hajiraas who spent their lives in a desolate and barren place and instituted exceptional standards of sacrifices for the sake of religion. Likewise, it is expected of every Waqf to uphold the covenant of Waqf (dedication) made by their parents even before their birth, who have in turn themselves reaffirmed the same.”

Waqifeen-e-Nau can contribute by sending articles regarding their respective fields of studies. The magazine is published on a quarterly basis as a platform for the Waqifeen-e-Nau to get in touch and say what they have always wanted to. What does Islam say?

Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The similitude of His light is as a lustrous niche, wherein is a lamp. The lamp is in a glass. The glass is as it were a glittering star. It is lit from a blessed tree — an olive — neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would well-nigh glow forth even though fire touched it not. Light upon light! Allah guides to His light whomsoever He will. And Allah sets forth parables to men, and Allah knows all things full well.

(Surah Nur 24:36)

Allah’s Messengersa said, “Allah said, ‘I will declare war against him who shows hostility to a pious worshipper of Mine. And the most beloved things with which My slave comes nearer to Me, is what I have enjoined upon him; and My slave keeps on coming closer to Me through performing Nawafil (voluntary acts/deeds) till I love him, so I become his sense of hearing with which he hears, and his sense of sight with

which he sees, and his hand with which he grips, and his leg with which he walks; and if he asks Me, I will give him, and if he asks My protection (Refuge), I will protect him; (i.e. give him My Refuge) and I do not hesitate to do anything as I hesitate to take the soul of the believer, for he hates death, and I hate to disappoint him.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari 6502)

The Promised Messiahas states:

Our paradise lies in our God. Our highest delight is in our God for we have seen Him and found every beauty in Him. This wealth is worth procuring though one might have to lay down one’s life to procure it. This ruby is worth purchasing though one may have to lose oneself to acquire it. O ye, who are deprived! Hasten to this fountain as it will satiate you. It is this fountain of life that will save you. What am I to do? How shall I impress the hearts with this good news? What sort of a drum am I to beat in the streets in order to make the announcement

that this is your God, so that people might hear? What remedy shall I apply to the ears of the people so that they should listen? If you become one with God, rest assured that God too will be yours.

Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaba states:

“In following the Imam of the age, a true and ardent devotee of the Holy Prophetsa, may God enable us to spread the message of the Living God to the world and may we make them realize that there is a Living God who exists; He still listens and shows signs; return to Him; come to Him; may we also develop a living relationship with God and act upon His teachings and worship Him as is His due right. May we become the recipients of His blessings and may we and our generations always remain protected from associating partners with God Almighty in every regard.” (Friday Sermon 18th April 2014)

Tafseer (Commentary of the Holy Qur'an)

Creator and Controller of the universe. It constitutes an unassailable argument against idolatry.

We have not created the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, but with truth, and for an appointed term; but those who disbelieve turn away from that of which they have been warned. (Surah Ahqaf 46:4)

The verse means to say that the creation of heavens and the earth is intended to serve an eternal purpose which is to serve man who is, God’s noblest handiwork, and the aim and object of whose life is to develop in himself Divine attributes. For the attainment by man of this grand and sublime object, God raised His Messengers in all times and among all peoples. To these Messengers He revealed Himself, and to them He gave His teaching. The greatest and noblest of these Divine Messengers was the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa, and the last and most complete and perfect code of Divine laws is the Quran.

The creation of the heavens and the earth also establishes the eternal truth that there is only One Designer,

The words “for an appointed time” signify that the universe had a beginning and will also have an end. It is to this great truth that the verses, “All that is on it will pass away. And there will remain only the Person of thy Lord, Master of Glory and Honour” (The Holy Qur’an with English Translation and Commentary 55:27-28)

The Story of the Holy Prophetsa

During a period, in which the Holy Prophet sa was living separate from his family, Hazrat Umar ra visited him and was amazed by what he saw. The Holy Prophet sa was sitting in a small room with a mere cloth wrapped loosely around his body; there was a bare bed with a pillow stuffed with date leaves. In one corner, some barley was placed and in another corner was a piece of animal skin storing water. Seeing the simplicity of the place where the King of kings was residing, Hazrat Umar ra was overwhelmed and full of tears.

The Holy Prophet sa inquired “ O Umar, why are you crying?” Hazrat Umar ra replied:

“Why

should I not cry?

I can see the marks of weaves of the bed on your body. On one side I look at your humble belong -

ings and on the other, I imagine the luxury of the Kings of Egypt and Persia. They are enjoying such an easy life and you are living in such hardship.”

To this the Holy Prophet sa replied:

“O Umar, would you not like that they take this world and I get the hereafter?” (Sahih Muslim)

This narration shows that among the Holy Prophet’s sa numerous good attributes, humility and simplicity acquired a high and distinguished position. Despite his great status, Prophet Muhammad sa never acted as if he was greater or better than other people and he urged his followers to follow in his footsteps and live a meek and humble life.

A heart-rending Comment

The Blessed Tour of Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaba to the United States September – October 2022 Part 1

On 6 September 2022, I reported for Mulaqat feeling very uneasy and worried. Huzoor Anwaraba had not led the prayers in the Mubarak Mosque since the night before.

An Extract from Abid Khan Sahib’s Diary

It was clear he was not feeling well and so, irrespective of any work, I just wished to have the opportunity to see Huzoor and to enquire how he was feeling.

Despite not feeling well, Huzoor came to his office at the usual time and after a few minutes called me. Upon entering, I was relieved to see that Huzoor seemed well, although perhaps a little fatigued. I asked him how he was. Huzoor said:

“Yesterday evening, shortly after I met you, the family Mulaqats started and after a few minutes I felt unwell and it continued to get worse throughout the session. By the end, I had to call Dr. Shabir Sahib.”

I asked Huzoor why had he not called the doctor or stopped the Mulaqats as soon as he felt unwell. Exhibiting his complete selflessness and pure love for the Jama’at members, Huzoor said:

“Ahmadis had come from far away to meet me and I did not wish for any of them to be disappointed or to have to wait for a long period, as they had to travel back to their homes. So, even though I was feeling unwell, somehow, with Allah’s Help, I continued and was able to meet all of the families.” There were no family Mulaqats scheduled that evening and so I asked Huzoor if he would at least now rest. In reply, Huzoor said:

“I have to finalise my notes for the Khuddam Ijtema, then in a day or two I will start preparing my notes for the Lajna Ijtema and then there is preparation for the coming USA tour and so there is no time to rest.”

I felt emotional and pained to see Huzoor unwell and to think of how the Khalifa-e-Waqt (Khalifa of the time) constantly set aside his own needs for the sake of the Jama’at and hid his pain.

I said: “Alhamdulillah, Huzoor, you continue to look well and your routine continues hardly without any change.”

What Huzoor said next shook me and filled me with immense sadness. Huzoor said:

That: “You do not know the pain in my heart. You just look at me and think that all is well.”

It seemed to me that Huzoor was not necessarily referring to physical ailments or pain.

Rather, it was a moment where Huzoor expressed the emotional anguish and grief he, as Khalifa-Waqt, feels as he observes the state of the world and the sorrows of those Ahmadis who are suffering.

“You do not know the pain in my heart. You just look at me and think that all is well.”

Huzoor's guidance

Huzoor Anwaraba was asked how children could avoid becoming addicted to their phones or tablets?

In reply, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmadaba said:

“It is a matter of understanding and priority. Every Ahmadi Muslim should understand that his main obligation is to offer the five daily prayers – not just for the sake of offering the prayer, but to achieve the love of Allah the Almighty. So when you realise that the purpose of your existence is the worship of Allah the Almighty, then you will give preference to that main objective.”

Huzoor continued:

“Parents should also be watchful at all times to see what their children are doing. A child of 10 years of age should not spend more than one hour on a mobile phone or online games. Outside games are much better, as they can help you better your health. So it is the duty of the parents as well that they should watch that their children are not spending too much time on mobile phones and make them realise, with love and kindness, that they have a purpose and they should try to achieve that purpose instead of wasting their time on online games.”

His Holiness was also asked about greed and how it can be overcome.

In a comprehensive answer, Huzoor said:

“Allah the Almighty says that you have to be content. Contentment counts. The Holy Prophet Muhammadsa has said that when you see somebody who is pious, who is God fearing, who is observing all the commandments of Allah the Almighty then try to follow him and pray to Allah the Almighty that He also gives you that status and you should also struggle hard for that. But if you see a worldly person who is very wealthy and who is a millionaire but he is not discharging his responsibilities towards his fellow beings but is just accumulating and collecting money and is usurping the rights of others, then pray to Allah the Almighty that Allah the Almighty saves you from this and don’t follow that example.”

Huzoor continued:

“Today because the vast majority of people are materialistic so they have forgotten their responsibilities towards their Creator. That is why they are greedy. Had they known their duties towards their Creator, they would not have behaved like this. So we as Ahmadi Muslims should take this banner and spread this message all across the country and the world that we should discharge the duties we owe to Allah the Almighty and to our fellow beings.”

Abdul Muqeet Khan Sahib asked Huzooraba what one could do to prepare for Jamia Ahmadiyya and what prayers one could do so that they stay true to their desire of going to Jamia.

Hazrat Khalifatul Masihaba said:

“You see, one thing is, are you regular in offering your five daily prayers? Do you know the meaning of your prayers? Do you seek Allah’s help while in prostration, to help you, to make you a good Murabbi or an Ahmadi? That is the first thing. Secondly, do you know how to read the Holy Quran? Do you do Tilawat daily? You should do at least one or two Rukus daily and try to learn the meaning of it as well. Do you have good morals? Try to read a passage from the books of the Promised Messiahas from The Essence of Islam – not any particular book – but from The Essence of Islam and then try to absorb and understand that subject. Then, you will know what religion is.

This is the only training. You should know the meaning of Surah al-Fatihah and read the Holy Quran, which is the basic requirement for Jamia students or general knowledge about Ahmadiyyat; you should also try to learn more about Ahmadiyyat. When did the Promised Messiahas claim to be the Promised Messiah? When did he take the first Bai‘at? When was the Promised Messiahas born?

“Then also recite the prayer:

“My Lord, I am in need of whatever good Thou mayest send down to me.” (Surah al-Qasas, Ch.28: V.25)

“This is a prayer of Mosesas. I like this one. You should also recite it.”

IN THE SPOTLIGHT

My name is Fowad Ahmed. I am a Waqif-e-Zindagi currently serving in MTA Ghana, Wahab Adam Studios in Accra. I am part of the blessed scheme of Waqf-eNau and I became a Waqif-e-Zindagi in June 2018 when I was sent along with my family to serve in Nigeria as a Chemistry teacher. After serving in Nigeria for three years, I was then transferred to Ghana to serve in the Production Department for MTA Ghana at the Wahab Adam Studios, Accra.

How did you know you wanted to dedicate your life in service of your faith?

From the very beginning, when I was young, my parents told me about the Waqf-e-Nau scheme that when I am older, I should be ready to dedicate my life for the service of faith. I was also very fortunate enough to attend classes with Hazrat Khalifatul Masih IV rh and Hadrat Khalifatul Masih V aba . This helped so much that now, when I look back, I feel fortunate to have been a part of these classes because it helped me stay attached and close to Khilafat and the Jama’at. All these factors put together were essential in having the mindset about dedicating my life when I was eventually called upon.

What were the events leading upto your Waqf being approved by Khalifatul-Masih V aba ?

Once I completed my bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, I sought for Huzoor’s aba advice as to what I should do next. I was graciously advised to seek for employment in the field of Chemistry. Alhamdulillah, I was able to obtain a role as a water treatment Chemist and worked for various companies in this field for about five years. During this time, I would report back to Huzoor aba every year. I was not fully content with working for a company which only had an aim of making profit so I was just praying and waiting for the moment I would be called upon

to serve the Jama’at. Alhumdolillah, it was not too long after that I was fortunate enough to receive a letter from the Waqfe-Nau department that there is a need for teachers in Africa and that because I have a background in Chemistry I should be encouraged to come forward and apply. For me it was the easiest decision I ever had to make because of the way I had been brought up and told that the purpose of being dedicated for the sake of the Jama’at as a Waqf-e-Nau is to serve in the best way possible. I had a stable job and I was progressing in my career, I had a chance to progress further and earn a very good living in the UK which was our home and my place of birth. All this was irrelevant for me because I was yearning for the opportunity to start my Waqf and dedicate myself fully. So, for me I didn’t have any second thoughts or reservations, neither did my wife who is also a Waqf-e-Nau and by the grace of Allah, we filled in the application form and sent it off without hesitation. We had no idea where in Africa we were going and what the conditions of the country would be, we were just ready to pack our belongings and make a move to wherever

we were needed. Alhumdolillah after a short period, our Waqf was accepted by Huzoor aba and we were posted to Nigeria in June 2018

Is there anyone who specifically inspired you?

It is without a doubt that Hazrat Khalifatul Masih V aba was the inspiration for us because his own example is there for us to see. He also served in Africa for many years as a teacher and the living conditions in those days were much worse than what they are today. In one Mulaqat we were fortunate to have with Huzoor aba we mentioned about the conditions in Nigeria and how we are trying our best to settle in and adjust to the new environment. Huzoor aba said that we are fortunate because during his time in Ghana, he would travel on the back of trucks to go from one place to another and contacting family and friends on the telephone was something you couldn’t even imagine. So, these words really inspired us to be firm in our Waqf and persevere and be thankful for what we have as we live in this day and age, we are

still able to contact our families instantly and we have more comfortable modes of transport.

What creates passion and motivation when you are carrying out your Waqf?

The passion comes from knowing that we have been sent by Huzoor aba to carry out a task and he has an expectation from us to fulfil that task to the best of our abilities. Also, when you see that others around you are inspired by the work of the Jama’at and the message of Islam Ahmadiyyat we spread to the people is welcomed, that is also something which is a motivating factor. During our time in Nigeria, we were not only working as teachers but our overall aim was also to take part in tabligh activities and humanitarian work by assisting Humanity First and IAAAE. When you go to the villages to see where boreholes have been drilled to provide clean drinking water to people who previously had to travel miles, those who have seen this first hand will also tell you that it is an extremely inspirational feeling. Similarly when we distributed various food parcels to the needy over time, we witnessed the joy and happiness on their faces which is something you can’t get enough of. These moments make you motivated on another level which you can’t even imagine.

What advice would you give to someone who wants to dedicate their life but is unsure about this life changing decision?

I think that we need to remember is the purpose of our existence which is to worship Allah and to serve His creation. If you are able to dedicate your life in the cause of your faith and focus fully on this task then I believe there is no better way to live your life and fulfil this command. Money comes and goes but the pleasure and the contentment in your heart will only be fulfilled once you are at peace with yourself. Once you know everything you do is for the propagation of Islam Ahmadiyyat and you are only carrying out the task which Huzoor aba has assigned for

you to carry out, that is what is the most fulfilling part of dedicating your life is. All the worries and concerns you may have about the conditions and how the family will adjust should be left with Allah to deal with. He will give you the strength and perseverance to be able to handle all these challenges. Once you dedicate your life you have decided to give your life in the way of Allah and surely once you leave your worries to Allah He will never leave you stranded Insha’Allah.

How important would you say are your earlier studies (Secondary School and University) in counting towards your ability to do Waqf?

My education as a whole was important for sure because it was my Chemistry degree which I was utilising to teach children in school. Having been fortunate enough to have been born and brought up in the UK, I had access to top quality education which is not available in countries such as Nigeria where I was teaching. So, the knowledge and skills that I gained from my education were essential and are even useful in my current role today.

What are three things you love about your Waqf?

Firstly, I feel since I became a Waqif-eZindagi my bond with Allah has become more stronger. When as a Waqf you face trials you pray to Allah for help and you realise that from nowhere Allah has arranged for us a solution. It comes from a place where you could never even imagine. The beauty of it all is that it happens time after time. We are faced with a trial and then when things seem as though there is no way out, suddenly Allah helps from the most mysterious of ways unimaginable. These incidents make your faith that much more stronger and the bond with Allah stronger day by day.

The second thing I love is the close bond with Khilafat and the fact that Huzoor has a special relationship with the Waqifeen-eZindagi around the world. Every Waqif-e-

Zindagi can affirm that they are fortunate to have this special link with Khilafat and it is an irreplaceable bond. It is due to the love Huzoor has for the Waqif-e-Zindagi serving the Jama’at.

The third thing I love about Waqf is the contentment in my heart about serving as a life devotee. In this day and age where materialism is rife and there seems to be no end in the world’s pursuit of wealth and fame, in reality that kind of life is void of any real substance and if you ask any person who is chasing this dream, they feel empty inside, never satisfied and without a real purpose in life. I in fact feel very sad about these people and seeing their condition makes me so grateful to Allah that I am a life devotee of the Jama’at. I know in my heart that no amount of money or wealth in this world can ever lure me away from serving in any capacity as a Waqif-e-Zindagi and I thank Allah for this huge blessing. I pray that May Allah give me the opportunity to serve as a true Waqif-e-Zindagi as expected by Huzoor and that I may be able to serve until my last breath, Ameen.

How are you still keeping in touch with Khalifatul-Masih V aba with regards to your Waqf?

As we are no longer in close proximity of Khilafat physically, the only way we can keep in touch is by writing letters. Alhamdulillah, I also have had the opportunity to meet Huzoor by having a Mulaqat on several occasions with my family during my Waqf. Every time I do meet him, I update him on the work that my wife and I are doing.

Describe your daily routine?

As a Waqif-e-Zindagi serving in MTA Ghana, we are expected to work 10 hours a day, 6 days a week. My work consists of managing the production department which mainly focuses on recording studio programmes. As my children’s school is also within the compound of the MTA studio, my working day starts at around 8am, which is when I drop my children to school and make my way to the studio. I leave the office around 6:30-7pm, sometimes if there is a recording taking place in

the evening it can reach 8-9pm or even later. If there is a recording outdoors where we are not on site then the day sometimes can be quite long.

Not everyone who is Waqfe-Zindagi will be posted near or around Khalifatul Masih or even in the same country. What advice do you have for such Waqifeen who will be posted far away from Markaz or their families?

I have been very fortunate to have been so close to Khilafat from my childhood. When I was posted in Nigeria, moving away from Khilafat was by far the most difficult part of the whole experience. Then of course, you have family and friends who are very dear to you, who you don’t want to move away from. We are human beings and so we are bound to have an attachment with the country and the people we have grown up with. But when you have dedicated your life for the sake of the Jama’at then these issues become nonexistent. There may be worries as to what conditions you will have to live in or what your allowance will be and whether or not you will be able to live within the means provided. I can tell you, I have witnessed countless experiences of Allah’s Fazl (grace) where I have been in difficult situations and Allah has helped me and my family from places I cannot even imagine. The key was to trust in Allah and just serve in the best way that you can. Therefore, when you have full trust in Allah and you decide to go ahead and dedicate yourself, it may seem difficult at first, but when you look back you will say that it was the best decision you ever made.

Please share a story or event you had with Khalifatul-Masih V aba ?

I am very fortunate enough to have had many moments with Hadrat KhalifatulMasih V aba but one particular moment I would like to share is during my time in Nigeria where I had a very close escape from some machete wielding thugs in broad daylight. It is only Allah who

protected me that day because there were at least six armed men versus me alone who was backed against a wall with nowhere to run. The incident happened one afternoon where myself and Murabbi Sahib, who was with me that day, were buying some chicken on the roadside when suddenly a political rally passed by. Before I knew it, a group of armed thugs who were a part of this rally approached us and attempted to rob us of our belongings. Murabbi Sahib managed to escape behind them while I was left backed against a wall with around six or seven intoxicated men ready to attack me. I vividly remember shouting Murabbi Sahib’s name and seeing the look of helplessness on his face. The next thing I see is one of the men shouting on the top of his voice with his machete raised up high, ready to strike me, when just at that moment they saw a large amount of cash on the floor which drew their attention away from me. At that time I had no idea where the money suddenly appeared from but as they went to pick up the cash I found my way out of the situation and was unscathed Alhamdolillah. As I attempted to run, one of the thug’s hands was still in my pocket but because I ran it ripped my pocket. I still managed to get away from him. I later found out that as Murabbi Sahib ran away, money from his pocket fell on the ground which drew the attention of the thugs. I wrote to Huzoor about this incident and requested for prayers to which I received a very wonderful reply. A short time after this very incident, one of my family members had a Mulaqat with Huzoor where he inquired about me in relation to this very incident. When I found out about this I was speechless and so overjoyed that Huzoor remembered me and was asking of my well-being. This incident didn’t put fear into my heart at all but instead strengthened me because it was a huge miracle that I came out unscathed by the Grace of Allah.

A Great Victory

The Humiliating End of the Opponents of the Promised Messiahas

Faaran Muhammad Alladin – Canada

“Never sent We a Messenger or a Prophet before thee, but when he sought to attain what he aimed at, Satan put obstacles in the way of what he sought after. But Allah removes the obstacles that are placed by Satan. Then Allah firmly establishes His Signs. And Allah is All-Knowing, Wise”.[1]

At the turn of the 20th century, a seemingly indestructible obstacle was placed by Satan in the way of the Divinely Appointed Messiah of God, Hazrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmadas. His name was John Alexander Dowie.

Born on May 25, 1847 in Scotland, John A. Dowie was no miniscule obstacle of meager means, but was a man of great influence, recognized profusely throughout America. He possessed an abundance of worldly luxuries, having an estimated wealth of $25,000,000 in December 1903, and owning several auditoriums with capacities numbering in the thousands.[2][3] He purchased a land of 6500 acres on which sits the city of Zion, with the ambitious idea of establishing his own theocratic kingdom.[4] Not only a master of wealth, he had also established his position as a spiritual leader–a self-proclaimed Prophet, the third incarnation of Elijah, and wielder of divine powers of healing, with a following of more than a hundred thousand.[5]

Dowie was also a vulgar opponent of Islam, often heard hurling grave abuses and attributing fallacious criticisms to Islam and its Holy Founder, the Prophet Muhammadsa. He was adamant of its complete annihilation and frequently prayed to God for it:

“It is time that the Moslem Abomination was gone… let it slink away back into the deserts of Arabia whence the filthy thing emerged…Ugh! How one hates the whole thing, the slimy, filthy thing! May God destroy it!”[6]

But quite contrary to his desires, God had actually willed for his destruction rather than that of Islam and to remove this impudent obstacle placed by Satan with His own hands. And so He did. After reading of Dowie’s utterly grotesque views and extreme opposition against Islam, the Promised Reviver of Faith rose to defend the universal religion through a decisive challenge–a prayer duel.

On the 8th of August, 1902, the Promised Messiahas sent an open letter inviting Dowie to this duel of two Prophets, which was published extensively in various newspapers throughout the world.[7]

For example, the Harrisburg Telegraph, a daily periodical published in the United States quoted the Promised Messiahas as saying:

“Come thou, O self-styled Prophet, to a duel… the weapons shall be prayer. Let us kneel on our knees in the dust of the earth, you and I together, and petition the Almighty that of us two whoever is the liar shall perish first.”[8]

The Promised Messiahas also added that whether Dowie assumed silence or not, the Sign would most definitely occur. And it would not occur through human interference, but through natural means, like disease, snake-bite, etc.[9]

And so with this challenge, a transatlantic battle ensued of which the world was the audience and the weapon was prayer. As for the Prophet from the East, the conditions were quite far from favorable. The Promised Messiahas was an old man of 67, suffering from many ailments while Dowie was 12 years his junior. According to his own words in a statement made on December 14, 1902, just a few months after the challenge was issued, Dowie boasted enjoying “excellent health” with an “unwearied brain” and a “healthy frame”.[10]

On December 21, 1902, in front of his Sunday congregation, Dowie finally responded to the fatal challenge due to the persistent pressure of the people after months of complete silence. He impertinently remarked:

“There is one foolish man in India, a Mohammedan Messiah, who persists in writing to me saying that the body of the Christ is buried at Cashmir… ‘People sometimes say to me: “Why do you not reply to this…?” Reply! Do you think that I shall reply to these gnats and flies?... If I put my foot on them I would crush out their lives. I give them a chance to fly away and live.”[11]

Such was the colossal vanity of the so-called divinely elected Prophet, but such was also the beginning of a humiliating end–destruction by Divine Decree. And

so it happened. The prophecy started taking effect with manifestly visible symptoms.

In 1905, Dowie was suddenly struck with paralysis while giving an address, and his “excellent health” began to dwindle.[12] He was forced to appoint his “loyal” follower, Wilbur Glenn Voliva (1870-1942) as the general overseer of Zion City, and in doing so, an internal dissension ensued.[13] Voliva took indirect possession of his church and with the changing attitude of the people towards Dowie, the Zionites almost unanimously agreed to dispose of him and make Voliva their leader.[14]

Dowie’s own newspaper, the Leaves of Healing, denounced him & exposed his financial & moral frauds, highlighting his blatant hypocrisy, embezzlement and criminal extravagance, spending the peo-

ple’s money for personal luxury and leaving Zion in a state of debt.[15]

His own wife and son abandoned him too, as the New-York Tribune noted in an article headed ‘Zion Ousts Dowie - Wife & Even the Unkissed Son Join New Leader’.[16]

In the meanwhile, the Promised Messiahas was receiving recurrent revelations from God of his opponents’ imminent death:

“I [God] shall manifest a fresh sign which will contain a great victory [Fath-e-Azeem]. It will be a sign for the whole world and will be wrought by God’s hands and from heaven.[17]

And on March 7, 1907:

“I convey to you the news of a liar’s death. Allah is with the truthful.”[18]

Finally, just two days after this revelation, John A. Dowie met his miserable end on March 9, 1907. The self-proclaimed spiritual healer who had once sought to spread his name throughout the world, ended up not even having the name “Dowie” engraved on his gravestone.[19]

And thus another petty obstacle was blown away like dust, and proved true were the Glorious words of the Gracious God:

“I shall humiliate him who designs to humiliate you. We shall suffice against your scoffers. O Ahmad, God has blessed you.”[20]

And now, in a city which once utterly detested the existence of Muslims, stands most honorably a Mosque named Fath-e-Azeem, a living testament of the victory of prayer over force, truth over injustice.

DANGERS OF A NUCLEAR WARFARE

An impending disaster is on its verge of casting a great shadow over the entire world; the only thing holding it back is God’s Grace over mankind and the diligent prayers of many righteous individuals which invoke God’s Mercy. The next world war is at our doorstep and it seems that it has brought something which all of us have been fearing; nuclear warfare. During a virtual meeting on 13 February 2022, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmadaba said:

“It is said that if Ukraine and Russia go to war then there is the danger of this evolving into a world war and resultantly nuclear weapons can be used.”

Nuclear warfare, also known as atomic warfare, is a form of military conflict or political strategy that deploys nuclear weaponry. Nuclear weapons utilise a chain of nuclear reactions to create an almost instant mass explosion. These weapons, in contrast to conventional weapons, can produce mass destruction in a shorter period of time and can have long-lasting effects. There is the immediate effect of the explosion which comes in the form of a shockwave travelling up to a miles or more depending on the size of the nuclear weapon. Then, directly behind the shockwave, travels the intense heatwave which vaporises everything in its path due to immense heat. In fact, the heat is so intense that a huge fireball is created spanning up to a couple of mile. This fireball has enough energy to create a thermal flash brighter than the sun for several seconds. This heat can cause severe burns even up to 20 miles away from the core of the explosion. As the rapidly expanding fireball pushes into the surrounding air, it creates a blast wave consisting of an abrupt jump in air pressure. This blast wave initially flows outwards at thousands of miles per hour but it slows down with distance, eventually coming to a halt. This blast wave is responsible for most of the physical damage done to the surrounds. Humans are surprisingly resilient to this blast wave but the collapse of the surround terrain and buildings usually end up taking most of the lives.

Both nuclear and conventional weapons produce destructive blast effects, although of vastly different magnitude. But what makes the nuclear weapons so much more dangerous is the radioactive fallout which follows the explosions and causes the long-lasting damage. There is a lot of radiation produced during the explosions but the half-life of those isotopes usually doesn’t exceed the time scale of the blast. However, there are some radioactive isotopes produced during the explosion whose half-life is much longer and these can linger after the explosion for a lot longer contaminating the surrounds; this is what fallout refers to. The immediate lethal effects of these radioactive isotopes only last for days or weeks but the radioactive contamination can linger on for several years. Our beloved Hazooraba has been warning the world officials about the dangers of a nuclear warfare for almost twenty years now. During his Friday Sermon on 9 May 2003, while warning of the horrific consequences of atomic warfare, Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaba said:

“… These incidents [of nuclear devastation] were witnessed in the Second World War even when those atomic bombs were of low capacity. Now, much more powerful atomic bombs have been developed. It is apparent from the current situation of the world that it is hastily moving towards destruction. Therefore, as always, it is the responsibility of Jama’at Ahmadiyya which has a deep love for humanity, that they should pray and pray fervently to save humanity. May the world recognize God and save itself from destruction as much as possible.”

These nuclear weapons have a global effect due to the sheer quantity of the radioactive material being ejected into the atmosphere. The radioactive material produced during the explosion, due to the vast amount of heat, rises high into the atmosphere, reaching the highest parts of the stratosphere layer. To date, the only use of nuclear weapons, besides the testing of them, occurred in 1945 during the conflict between America and Japan. The American

atomic bombings on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the first and only uses of these weapons in a conflict. On August 6, 1945, a uranium based nuclear weapon, code name “Little Boy”, was detonated over Hiroshima. Three days later, on August 9, a plutonium based implosion-type nuclear weapon, code name “Fat Man”, was detonated over Nagasaki. Together, these two bombings resulted in the deaths of approximately 200,000 people and Japan surrendered without any further conflict. The fallout effect of these two weapons was so great that the atmospheric nuclear testing afterwards resulted in detectable levels of radioactive fission products across the globe, and some of that radiation is still present with us even today.

J. Robert Oppenheimer, an American theoretical physicist, has been given the title of “father of the atomic bomb.” He was part of the committee of scientist who were working on the atomic bomb. He only realised the true power this weapon held after its completion and was one of the many who advised against the use of this weapon on Japan. He hated his creation after realising what sort of destruction was possible with it. He has been famously quoted to have said “Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds.”

Even our beloved Hazooraba has expressed his concern of these weapon’s long-lasting effects. On 9 March 2019, while addressing the 16th Annual Peace Symposium of Jama’at Ahmadiyya UK, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmadaba stated:

“If there is a nuclear war, we will not only be destroying the world today but we will also be leaving behind a lasting trail of destruction and misery for our future generations. Hence, we must pause and reflect on the consequences of our actions. We should not consider any issue or conflict, whether within a country or at an international level, to be insignificant.”

If we observe these effects after only two comparatively smaller nuclear bomb detonations and several few test explosions, then what would happen is a full out nuclear warfare were to start? The explosive power of these weapons is so much greater than that of the conventional weapons that if a war were to break out then it is possible that some countries would be completely wiped out.

On 24 March 2012, during his keynote address at the 9th Annual Peace Symposium of Jama’at Ahmadiyya UK,

Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmadaba, said:

“Japan is the one country to have experienced the abhorrent consequences of atomic warfare, when it was attacked by nuclear bombs during the Second World War … The nuclear bombs that were used at that time and which caused widespread devastation, were much less powerful than the atomic weapons that are possessed by even very small nations today … Let it be clear that if nuclear weapons are used again today, then it is quite possible that parts of certain countries could be completely wiped off the map. They could cease to exist …”

Not only would we observe mass destruction everywhere at the time of the conflict but we would also observe the long-lasting effects of the radioactive isotopes which would be released into the atmosphere. The effects of these radioactive isotopes would echo through time for several generations possibly causing permanent damage to humanity. So what is so devastating about the widespread of these radioactive isotopes? There are several short and long term effects on a human when they come into contact with enough of these radioactive isotopes. One of the main concerns is the alteration of the human DNA which can lead to diseases like cancer. Trace amounts of these radioactive isotopes inside of a pregnant woman can be passed on to the child, which could lead to a defective birth of a

child with physical or mental disabilities or possible future diseases, which can also develop early. These effects pass down from generation to generation, possibly worsening every generation. The spread of these radioactive isotopes can lead to the contamination of water, crops, and animals which we consume and therefore indirectly ingest these isotopes. The increase of these isotopes in atmosphere means we also breathe them in more often hence letting them enter our bloodstream.

Another devastating effect of nuclear warfare would be on the climate of our planet. With just the explosions of tens or hundreds of nuclear weapons, the climate of our planet could drastically change. Less than one percent of all the nuclear weapons in the world could disrupt the global climate enough to cause a mass famine in the world, threatening as many as two billion people with starvation. There are enough nuclear weapons on the Earth which if used could bring about a nuclear winter, essentially destroying the whole ecosystem on the planet which all life on Earth depends on. With every use of nuclear weapon there is a high amount of soot released into the atmosphere. These soot clouds block most of the sunlight and restrict it from reaching the surface of our planet. With enough nuclear explosions, the whole of our planet can be covered in a layer of soot clouds. This would block majority of the sunlight causing the global temperature to plummet, killing majority of the life on earth and bring it to a new ice age.

In the Holy Quran, Almighty Allah also talks about nuclear weaponry, specifically in Chapter 104, Al-Humazah. Of course reading its translation is not going to allow you to see where Almighty Allah mentions about nuclear weaponry as Arabic is a very rich language and a lot of interpretation is lost when its translated into another language. However, this interpretation can be found in the commentary of the Holy Quran. In the book “Revelation, Rationality, Knowledge & Truth”, Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmadrh mentions ‘Nuclear Holocaust’ in

which he also mentions a Quranic prophesy about it. Hazrat Mirza Tahir Ahmad writes in his book: “Among the Quranic prophecies relating to events and inventions of our age, there are some which are of outstanding importance and great global significance. One such prophecy relates to the impending danger of a nuclear holocaust.

This prophecy was made at a time when man could not entertain the idea of an atomic explosion by any stretch of his imagination. But as we will presently illustrate, there are certain verses of the Holy Quran which clearly speak of tiny insignificant particles which are described as storehouses of immense energy, as though the fire of hell was locked within them. Amazing as it may seem, this is exactly what is literally described in the following verses.

Woe to every backbiter, slanderer, Who amasses wealth and counts it over and over. He imagines that his wealth will make him immortal.

Nay! he shall surely be cast into the “hotamah”. And what should make thee know what the “hotamah” is?

Allah’s fire as preserved fuel, Which will leap suddenly on to the hearts. It is locked up in outstretched pillars to be used against them.

(The Holy Quran, Chapter 104, Verse 2-10)

This short Quranic Chapter is densely packed with astounding statements which lie far beyond the reach of the people of that age. Strange is it not, to read that the sinful people of a certain description would be cast into the Hotamah, which means the tiniest of particles, such as we see floating in a beam of light which passes through a poorly lit room.

Authentic Arabic lexicons describe hotamah as possessing two root meanings; first hatamah, which means ‘to pound’ or ‘pulverize into extremely

small particles’, and the second hitmah, which means ‘the smallest insignificant particle’. Thus hitmah is the result obtained by breaking something down to its smallest constituents.

The two meanings just mentioned can rightfully be applied to any extremely minute particle which has reached the limits of its divisible potential. As the concept of the atom had not been born fourteen hundred years ago, the nearest substitute to it could only be hotamah which also sounds intriguingly close to atom. One hardly recovers from the shock of the claim that a time would come when man would be cast in the hotamah when another claim, even more bizarre, comes in its wake.

Explaining the word hotamah, the Holy Quran speaks of a blazing fire built within it and confined in extended columns. It goes on to declare that when man will be cast into it, this fire will directly leap upon his heart as though no intervening rib cage existed. This can only mean that this fire would be of a completely different nature which could directly kill the heart before it could scorch the body. Certainly no fire known to man of that age could be described as such.

These however are not the only elements of surprise about this description; what follows is even more astonishing. This fire is mentioned as having been locked up in outstretched columns waiting to leap upon man till such time as it is destined to be unleashed.”

In the end, we have to listen to Huzoor’saba instructions and addressing all Ahmadis, Huzooraba said:

“It is your duty to pray. Continue to pray that Allah the Almighty safeguards you from a world war. … It is prayer alone that can save you.”

AN EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH RESPECTED MARWAN SARWAR GILL

What inspired you to apply for Jamia?

I felt inspired by other Missionaries and I felt that serving as a Missionary would be the closest way for myself to live a life according to the pleasure of Allah and also the securest path to receive the nearness and blessings of Khilafat.

Was there anyone who inspired you to become a Murabbi? Someone you looked up to in your childhood.

I looked up to Huzoor Anwar and then afterwards Mubarak Tanvir sahib (a missionary serving in Germany).

Name three things that you experienced in your time studying in Jamia which changed you as a person.

1. My personal relationship and experience with Allah 2. Nearness and blessings of Khilafat 3. Principal sahib as a constant mentor and role model.

Any special memorable moment with Khalif-tul-Masihaba which stuck with you?

During my last Mulaqat with Huzoor I mentioned to him that he gave me the privilege to meet him during the 7-year Jamia career 23 times in total in forms of personal audiences. I mentioned to him as to how I could return this enormous blessing and favour, to which Huzoor replied that I should pray for him. Likewise, I expressed to him that each year new Missionaries

will graduate and the spiritual army of Huzoor Anwar will increase by each year. How could I become the bird “Hud Hud” (special servant of Huzoor) among his large army of spiritual servants. (The bird Hud Hud is a symbolic expression of the Holy Quran which refers to a special servant amongst the army of Hazrat Suleiman who accomplished a special task for him.) Huzoor replied that all of them are special to Huzoor, but if you want to become my “Hud Hud” then bring the throne of the queen of Saba. (It’s a reference to the Qur’anic anecdote in which “Hud Hud” prepared a special palace for the queen of Saba which finally convinced her to accept the message of Hazrat Suleiman).

How has studying in Jamia prepared you for your posting?

I benefited a lot, not only from the curriculum, but also the practical examples, experiences and virtues of our teachers.

Where are you posted and what are your daily activities?

I am posted in Buenos Aires (Argentina). As a pioneer in the country, there was no prescheduled or fixed agenda, rather the mission started from the ground level and I have to keep on improvising and planning new initiatives. My daily activities include to accompanying our new Jama’at members and on the other side explore new avenues of Tabligh work. Moreover, I dedicate some time on a daily basis for personal religious studies and to further improve my Spanish skills.

How important is it for a Murrabi to keep in constant contact with Khalifatul-Masihaba?

I believe the personal relationship with Huzoor is the oxygen for a Murabbi to fulfil his duties.

What are two things that you would advise the current Jamia students around the world?

To work on their personal relationship with Allah and build a close tie with Khalifatul-Masih which should be based on spiritual nearness and love.

What advice would you give to anyone who wants to join Jamia but is unsure about this life changing decision?

If you are looking to please Allah and find the love and pleasure of God then this is a very secure path which would lead you to your destination. It isn’t an easy task, rather being a humble servant of the Jama’at requires a high standard of dedication and firm conviction. You may have to confront many obstacles in this journey but if you stay loyal to Allah, He will always take care of your needs and grant you His love and nearness.

Not every Murrabi will be posted near Huzoor. What advice would you give for those Murrabis that are posted far away from Markaz and their families?

To keep in mind that we do such sacrifices for the sake of Allah and the pleasure of Huzoor. We find many examples of prophets who had to mi-

grate far away for the cause of Allah and then we see how Allah granted them his love and blessings due to their obedience. The story of Prophet Abrahamas and prophet Ismaelas is very relevant for us. So, as Missionaries, we should reply in the same manner to our spiritual father as Prophet Ismaelas did and should follow his noble standard of sacrifice.

Jamia Ahmadiyya UK will be holding entry test and interview on 04th and 05th July 2023 for this year’s intake of students. The following conditions apply:

Qualifications: Applicants with A-Level qualification will be given preference. Applicants with A-Levels qualification (passing with a minimum B in at least 3 subjects) will be accepted. Applicants applying with GCSEs must obtain grades 8 and 9. BTEC qualification will not be accepted.

Age on Entry: Maximum age of 17 years for students with GCSE or 19 years with A-Levels or equivalent qualifications.

Medical Certificate: The applicants MUST submit a medical certificate from the GP with whom they have been registered.

Written Test and Interview: The applicants will take a written test and will appear before a Selection Board for interview. Only those who pass the written test will be invited for interview.

The written test and interview will be based on the recitation of the Holy Quran, the Waqfe Nau Syllabus, and proficiency in reading, writing and spoken English and Urdu languages. Furthermore, candidates will be judged on their potential of learning and reading the translation of the Holy Quran, Ahadith, the books of the Promised Messiahas as well as religious and general knowledge.
