Pray to Allah the Almighty for YOUR religious and worldly progress (Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih VMay Allah be his Helper - Virtual Mulaqat with Waaqifaat-e-Nau Canada, 11th June 2023)

From the Editor... At Jalsa Salana UK 2023, Hazrat Mirza Masoor Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih V (May Allah be his helper) announced that this year, by the Grace of Allah, 8600 children worldwide were born into the Waqfe Nau scheme. We are all extremely fortunate that before our birth, our parents had the pure wish to also include us in this blessed scheme. However, it is not enough for us to be content with just the title of Waqfe Nau; it is our responsibility to continuously strive to have the highest standard of morals and dedication, and make every effort towards fulfilling the expectations that our beloved Hazooraba has for us. In his Friday Sermon on 28th October 2016 beloved Hazooraba said: “Waqfeene Nau, as I said are very special. But they will have to prove that they are ahead of others in their relationship with Allah; only then they will be called ‘special’. They will be called special if they have fear of God more than others. They will be called special if their standards of worship are a lot higher than others. They will be called special if they offer supererogatory prayers along with the obligatory ones. It is a sign of being special if their degree of general conduct is extremely high. There is a marked difference in their language and talking manners. It is clearly observable that there is a genuinely trained person who prefers faith over worldly matters. Then they will be ‘special’… Waqfeene Nau should improve the standards of sacrifice, prayers and faithfulness. They should employ all their capabilities and capacities to fulfil their parents’ and their own pledges. Try to work to hold the faith high. Then Allah the Exalted blesses and He leaves none without rewarding.” May Allah enable all of us to fulfil our pledges and follow the directives and guidance of Hazooraba to the highest standard. Ameen. In this issue of Maryam Magazine our readers can enjoy articles including ‘Fruits of the Holy Qur’an’, ‘A Day in the Life of the Holy Prophetsaw’, ‘Canadian Waaqifaat-e-Nau Virtual Mulaqat with Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaba’ and ‘Waqf in the Field: Becoming a Pharmacist’.

Writings of the as Promised Messiah

God addressed me and said that I should inform my Jama‘at that those who believe and their belief is not adulterated with worldly considerations and is free from hypocrisy and cowardice and is not found wanting at any stage of obedience, such people are the favourites of God. And God says that indeed these are the ones whose station is that of Truth. Listen, O you who can: What is it that God desires from you? All He desires is only that you become solely His and do not associate any partners with Him, neither in the heavens nor on the earth. Our God is that God Who is alive even now as He was alive before. He speaks even now as He used to speak before. And even now He hears as He heard before. It is a false notion that in these times He only hears but does not speak. On the contrary, He hears and also speaks. All His Attributes are eternal and everlasting. None of His Attributes is in abeyance, nor will it ever be.

A day in the life of the Holy Prophet saw We all know that our holy master, Hazrat Muhammad Mustafasaw led an extremely busy life. A great part of his time was taken up by expeditions carried out for the defence of Islam. Devising strategies for these defensive battles required a great deal of physical and mental strength, as well as time. Below is an account of what a normal day of the Holy Prophetsaw would be like when at peace It is said that the King of Persia – a contemporary of the Holy Prophetsaw – had divided his days in the following manner: The days of spring were set aside for rest and sleep; overcast days were for hunting; rainy days were reserved for drinking, partying and enjoyment; and when the day was bright and clear, the king would hold his court and hear public grievances. Such indeed are the days of the worldly people who have no thought for the Hereafter. The Holy Prophet Muhammadsaw, on the other hand, had permanently divided his day into three parts, regardless of the conditions. One part of the day was set aside for worship, the second for his family and the third for his own personal needs. Most of the time that he reserved for himself was again allocated for the service of mankind. (Ash-Shifa‘ by Qadi‘Ayad, Vol. 1, p. 174, Darul-Kitab Al-‘Arabi)

The 13 years which the Holy Prophet Muhammadsaw spent in Mecca after the proclamation of Prophethood, were spent in receiving the revelation of the Holy Qur’an, preaching, teaching, training of converts and enduring a long period of trials and hardships. The details of this period are rather sketchy, but, on the other hand, there are countless traditions which shed light on the Holy Prophet Muhammad’ssaw life in Medina, and from these, we are able to construct a sketch of the way he spent his life in Mecca. According to traditions, the Holy Prophet Muhammadsaw started his day with predawn Tahajjud prayer. Before the prayer, he would perform ablution, clean his teeth with miswak (a piece of tree-branch used for this purpose), and wash his mouth thoroughly. He would then stand up and offer a long and beautiful Tahajjud prayer, in which he would recite long chapters of the Holy Qur’an. These prayers would be so long that his feet would begin to swell. He would then rest for a while. After this if anyone of his family was awake at the time, he would talk to them, otherwise he would continue to rest for a little longer. As soon as Bilal’sra call for prayer reached his ears, he would promptly rise up and offer two short rak‘ats of Sunnah, and then proceed to lead the Fajr prayer in the mosque. If he ever missed the Tahajjud prayer due to illness, he would offer nawafil during the day (Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab-ul-Tahajud). After Fajr prayer, the Holy Prophetsaw would enquire after his Companionsra and sit with them till sunrise. Sometimes they would talk about the time before Islam. The Holy Prophet Muhammadsaw would ask if anyone had had a dream. He would be pleased if the dream was good and would interpret it. Sometimes he would even relate his own dreams. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Kitab Ta‘bir-ulRu‘ya; Sunan Abu Daud, Kitab-ul-Adab; Sahih Muslim, Kitab-ul-Masajid, Bab FadlilJulus fis-Salat) The Holy Prophet Muhammadsaw would plan his day in the morning. If he did not see someone in the mosque for two or three days, he would be concerned and enquire about them. If the person was on a journey, the Holy Prophet Muhammadsa would pray for them, and if they were in town or were ill, he would pay them a visit. (Kanz-ul-Ummal, Vol. 7, p. 153) The Holy Prophet Muhammad’ssaw company was an ideal source for the edification and training of the Companionsra. Early in the morning, children would bring containers filled with water to him. The Holy Prophet Muhammadsaw would bless the water by dipping his fingers in it. (Sahih Muslim, Kitab-ul-Fadhail, Bab Qurbin Nabisa minan-Nas) After concluding his public duties, he would go home and ask if there was anything to eat. If there was any food, he would eat and if there was nothing, he would say, “Alright, let us fast today.” (Jami‘ al-Tirmidhi, Kitab-us-Saum)

Maryam | 7

Worldly rulers and noblemen are known to delegate their duties to their ministers and indulge in their own pleasures, but this was not the way of the Holy Prophet Muhammadsaw. He would himself lead the five daily prayers as well as the Friday and Eid prayers. He would help his wives with household chores and never considered it below his dignity to work with his own hands. Like an ordinary person, he would sew and patch his own clothes, repair his shoes, sweep the house, look after the livestock and milk them; helping the servants if they were tired (Musnad Ahmad, Vol. 6, p. 121; Usdul-Ghabah, Vol. 1, p. 29). He himself would brand the cattle of the treasury (Baitul-Mal). He would look after the neighbours and milk their goats for them. (Musnad Ahmad, Vol. 5, p. 111) One of the most important and delicate tasks the Holy Prophet Muhammadsaw had to perform was the safeguarding of the revelation of the Holy Qur’an. Most of his time was reserved for this purpose. Whether he received a revelation in his house or during some meeting, he always experienced a peculiar feeling since the task was an onerous one and he would perspire profusely. He would immediately call the scribe to record the revelation in writing. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Bada-ul-Wahi wa Fadhail-ul-Qur’an) Memorising the revelation, revising it for recitation in Salat and pondering over its meanings was yet another demanding task the Holy Prophet Muhammadsaw had to perform. Raising Waqifeen-e-Nau Children Waqifeen-e-Nau children from Texas, USA were blessed to have an in-person meeting with Hazrat Khalifatul Masih V, may Allah be his Helper, at the Bait-ul-Ikram Mosque on 5thOctober 2022.

AWaqifa-e -Nau asked whether, as a mother of a Waqif-e-Nau baby

boy, there were any unique practices to focus on during her child’s early years to strengthen his pledge to serve the Jama’at . Hazooraba asked how old the child was, to which she replied that he was nearly 15 months old. Hazooraba said:

“The first thing is that you pray for him in your five daily prayers and offer two rakats of Nafl for him, praying that Allah Almighty make him a true Waqif-e-nau. And then, as he grows up, you teach him about morals and teachings of the Holy Qur’an and of Islam. “And show your own example. Both, husband and wife should set their own example before their children so that they will know that our parents are always offering five daily prayers, they read the Holy Qur’an, they try to understand the meaning of the Holy Qur’an, they are the thorough example of the teachings of the Holy Qur’an and Islam and they are true followers of Islam Ahmadiyyat. Then they will grow up in that atmosphere, environment, and then they will become a good Waqifeen-e-Nau.”

Fruits of the Holy Qur’an Humda Bilal

There are many blessings that Allah the Almighty has bestowed upon us Muslims, and one such example is the complete ‘Code of Life’ which He has given us, in the form of the Holy Qur’an. In recognisable terms, this includes obligations towards Him and mankind, morals and vices, and even little things such as health and foods to eat have been laid out for us. In this article, we are looking at the fruits which have been cited in the Holy Qur’an. “And He it is Who brings into being gardens, trellised and untrellised, and the date-palm and cornfields whose fruits are of diverse kinds, and the olive and the pomegranate, alike and unlike. Eat of the fruit of each when it bears fruit, but pay His due on the day of harvest and exceed not the bounds. Surely, Allah loves not those who exceed the bounds.” (Chapter 6, Verse 142) There are six fruits which have been mentioned in the Holy Qur’an: 1. Olives 2. Pomegranate 3. Figs 4. Bananas 5. Grapes 6. Dates 10 | Maryam

Olives Olives are small, oval fruits which are usually grown across the Mediterranean but are also found in other parts of the world, like Italy, Spain and California. They come in a spectrum of colours ranging from green to black, depending on when they were picked. Once picked, olives can either be eaten (whole or used in cooking) or can be pressed and turned into olive oil. [1]

Mention in the Holy Qur’an Olives and its trees have been mentioned a few times in the Holy Qur’an and thus hold an importance in Islam. “By the Fig and the Olive, And by Mount Sinai. And by this City of Security, Surely, We have created man in the best make;” (Chapter 95, Verses 2-5) Another verse of the Holy Qur’an highlights a property of olive oil: “Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth. The similitude of His light is as a lustrous niche, wherein is a lamp. The lamp is in a glass. The glass is as it were a glittering star. It is lit from a blessed tree — an olive — neither of the east nor of the west, whose oil would well-nigh glow forth even though fire touched it not. Light upon light! Allah guides to His light whomsoever He will. And Allah sets forth parables to men, and Allah knows all things full well.” (Chapter 24, Verse 36) The purity of the oil described in this verse that comes from the tree which is “neither of the east nor of the west” signifies a universal guidance which does not discriminate in favour of or against any people and which is equally meant for all of them. [2] Allah the Almighty uses his creation as a sign for people who understand. “Therewith He grows corn for you, and the olive and the date-palm, and the grapes, and all kinds of fruits. Surely, in that is a Sign for a people who reflect.” (Chapter 16, Verse 12)

Health Benefits of Olives Olives are typically high in salt due to the fact that they are cured or packaged in brine or salt water. Some of the health benefits of olives include: •

Rich in antioxidants - Olives are rich in plant compounds called polyphenols which have effective antioxidant properties. These compounds can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as atherosclerosis and cancer.

Anti-inflammatory - One of the polyphenols in olives is called oleocanthal. This compound appears to share the same pharmacological activity as ibuprofen, and acts as a natural antiinflammatory.

Maryam | 11

Supports heart health - Although high in fat, the majority is a beneficial mono-unsaturated variety called oleic acid. This fatty acid is associated with a reduced risk of heart disease. Oleic acid may help in this way by regulating cholesterol balance and reducing blood pressure.

Fermented food - Olives are one of the most popular fermented foods, by consuming such foods you are adding beneficial bacteria and enzymes to your intestinal flora, which increases the health of your gut microbiome and digestive system and may enhance your immune function. [1]

Pomegranate Initially pomegranates originated in the area from Northern India to Iran but are now mainly grown in America, Spain, the Middle East and India. They are a round shaped fruit with a hard, shiny skin. Inside, scores of edible little white seeds are held in jewel-like, ruby-coloured sacs filled with sweet, juicy flesh. The sacs themselves are packed in a bitter, pale-yellow pith. [3]

Mention in the Holy Qur’an

In the Holy Qur’an Allah has said that the trees of true faith will appear in the Hereafter as grapes and pomegranates and other good fruits. [4] “Is the reward of goodness anything but goodness. Which, then, of the favours of your Lord will you twain deny? And besides these two, there are two other Gardens — Which, then, of the favours of your Lord will you twain deny? — Dark green with foliage. Which, then, of the favours of your Lord will you twain deny? Therein also will be two springs gushing forth with water. Which, then, of the favours of your Lord will you twain deny? In both of them there will be all kinds of fruit, and dates and pomegranates. Which, then, of the favours of your Lord will you twain deny?” (Chapter 55, Verses 61-70) Allah the Almighty repeats His signs and verses in the Holy Qur’an for His people to understand them and fruits are no exception. “And it is He Who sends down water from the cloud; and We bring forth therewith every kind of growth; then We bring forth with that green foliage wherefrom We produce clustered grain. And from the date-palm, out of its sheaths, come forth bunches hanging low. And We produce therewith gardens of grapes, and the olive and the pomegranate — similar and dissimilar. Look at the fruit thereof when it bears fruit, and the ripening thereof. Surely, in this are Signs for a people who believe.” (Chapter 6, Verse 100)

Health Benefits of Pomegranates

Pomegranates can have up to three times more antioxidants than green tea. Antioxidants protect cells from damage and reduce inflammation. [5] Some of the health benefits of pomegranates include: •

Supports heart health - Pomegranates can protect the heart by lowering blood pressure and reducing blood sugar levels. They have a good amount of polyphenol compounds called punicalagins. These antioxidants help prevent the artery walls from thickening as well as lower the buildup of cholesterol and plaque. Pomegranate juice also has high amounts of plant pigments called anthocyanins and anthoxanthins that support good heart health. Atherosclerosis, the

12 | Maryam

buildup of cholesterol and fats in the arteries, is a common cause of heart disease. Pomegranate juice may help reduce low-density lipoprotein cholesterol – known as the “bad cholesterol” – that clog arteries. It can also increase high-density lipoprotein cholesterol – known as the “good cholesterol” – which lowers the risk of strokes and heart attacks. •

Helps diabetes control – Studies have shown that people with type 2 diabetes who began to drink pomegranate juice showed an improvement in insulin resistance.

Fresh pomegranate is also a source of fibre, which can promote weight loss and help maintain a healthy weight, and ease constipation. [3]

Figs Figs are the fruit of the ficus tree. They have a unique, sweet taste, soft and chewy texture, and are filled with slightly crunchy, edible seeds. Fresh figs are delicate and perishable, so are often dried to preserve them. This produces a sweet and nutritious dried fruit which can be enjoyed throughout the year. Before the time of refined sugars, due to their natural sweetness, figs were often used as a sweetener. [5]

Mention in the Holy Qur’an The fig has been mentioned in the Holy Qur’an in chapter 95, verse 2 and its use in this chapter is symbolic. “By the Fig and the Olive, And by Mount Sinai. And by this City of Security, Surely, we have created man in the best make.” (Chapter 95, Verses 2-5) The Fig, the Olive, Mount Sinai and “this City of Security” have been invoked as witnesses to support the claim that the Holy Prophetsaw will succeed. There are different views as to what is meant by these things, and some of them are: - “The Fig” and “the Olive” are symbolic of Jesusas, “Mount Sinai” of Mosesas; and “this City of Security” of the Holy Prophetsaw. - “The Fig” is symbolic of the Mosaic Dispensation and “the Olive” of the Islamic Dispensation. - Another explanation of the symbolism used in these verses is where the four words represent four periods in the history of human evolution, “The Fig” representing the era of Adamas, “the Olive” that of Noahas, “Mount Sinai” that of Mosesas and “this City of Security” that of Islam. [6]

Health Benefits of Figs Figs, both dried and fresh, are a great source of fibre and are full of vitamins and minerals. Some of the health benefits of figs include: •

Promotes digestive health – Figs are often recommended to nourish and tone the intestines; they act as a natural laxative because of their high fibre content. The fibre they provide also Maryam | 13

has prebiotic properties, feeding the gut bacteria and promoting a healthy gut environment which, as a result, improves digestive wellness. •

Rich in antioxidants – Figs contain phenols and their antioxidant properties help prevent oxygen from reacting with other chemicals and causing damage to cells and tissues.

May support healthy blood pressure – A high sodium (salt) diet, can lead to deficiencies of potassium and this imbalance may lead to high blood pressure (hypertension). A diet rich in fruit and vegetables, including fresh figs, naturally increases potassium levels and is therefore encouraged to help manage blood pressure.

May improve diet quality and aid weight management – Naturally high in dietary fibre and packed with vitamins and minerals, figs may be a useful dietary inclusion to aid with weight management. [4]

Bananas

There are a number of varieties of bananas, depending on when they were picked and from which origin. [7]

Mention in the Holy Qur’an

“And as for those on the right hand — how lucky are those on the right hand! — They will be amidst thornless lote-trees, And clustered bananas, And extended shade, And flowing water, And abundant fruit, Neither failing, nor forbidden,” (Chapter 56, Verses 28-34) The lote-tree mentioned in these verses grow in dry climate. The banana on the other hand requires a lot of water for its growth. The reference of these two different kinds of trees in these verses signifies that the fruits of Paradise will not only be plentiful and delightful but will be found in all climatic conditions. [8]

Health Benefits of Bananas Bananas are extremely nutritious; rich in potassium, riboflavin, niacin and fibre, and the rapid energy boost given by their high sugar levels means that they’re a great snack. Some of the health benefits of bananas include: •

Supports gut health – Due to their high content of pectin, a soluble fibre which not only helps lower cholesterol but normalises bowel function, bananas have a soothing effect on the gut. The high fibre content of bananas helps to stimulate the feeling of fullness and acts to reduce bloating.

May support heart health – Bananas are loaded with valuable micronutrients, especially potassium – an important electrolyte in the body. Potassium helps to regulate heart function as well as fluid balance which is a key factor in managing blood pressure.

May help in the management of heartburn – Unripe bananas help to neutralise stomach acid leucocyanidin (a plant compound they contain) helps to promote the thickness of the mucous membrane of the stomach

Are an energy booster – As they have a low water content, bananas generally have more calories and a higher sugar content compared to other fruits. They contain sugar in the form of sucrose, fructose and glucose in combination with fibre; this allows them to supply an instant yet sustained boost of energy. [7]

14 | Maryam

Grapes Grapes are small, oval fruits that grow in bunches on vines. Depending on the variety of the grape, they may be eaten fresh, dried to make raisins, or used to make jam, juice or vinegar. [9]

Mention in the Holy Qur’an “He it is Who sends down water for you from the clouds; out of it you have your drink, and there grow from it trees on which you pasture your cattle. Therewith He grows corn for you, and the olive and the date palm, and the grapes, and all kinds of fruits. Surely, in that is a Sign for a people who reflect.” (Chapter 16, Verses 11-12) The first verse here refers to rain which supplied man with drink and helped to grow such plants that feed animals which serve him. Mention of such plants has been made in the following verse which are used by man himself as food, staples, condiments, or dessert. Thus, it draws attention to the fact that not only animals but also plants have been created for man and are engaged in serving him. [10]

Health Benefits of Grapes Grapes are a source of natural compounds which have beneficial uses. Some of the health benefits of grapes include: •

Source of protective antioxidants – Grapes contain compounds such as polyphenols, catechins and anthocyanins which have protective antioxidant properties. Grape juice is one of the richest sources of phenolic compounds amongst fruits.

May support heart health – Grapes provide fibre and potassium which are both helpful in their support of the heart function including blood pressure. The polyphenols in grapes are thought to benefit the cardiovascular system, protecting it from inflammatory and oxidative damage.

May support eye health – Resveratrol and fat-soluble carotenoids named lutein and zeaxanthin are protective against the UV light which can damage the delicate cells of the eye. Lutein and zeaxanthin are especially useful as they appear to protect the macula of the eye from the effects of blue light from devices like mobiles and tablets. [9]

Dates Dates are a fruit that come from the date palm tree, which is native to the Middle East, although they are also now grown in the Mediterranean, Asia, the USA and Mexico. Dates grow in large clusters which hang from the top of these palm trees. As they ripen, their skins turn brown and wrinkle as more and more moisture leaves the fruit. [11]

Mention in the Holy Qur’an Dates are the most mentioned fruit in the Holy Qur’an and this (further) signifies the importance that this fruit holds Maryam | 15

within Islam. One example of its mention which is very important for Muslims is with regards to the birth of prophet Jesusas. “So she conceived him, and withdrew with him to a remote place. And the pains of childbirth drove her unto the trunk of a palm-tree. She said, ‘O! would that I had died before this and had become a thing quite forgotten!’ Then he called her from beneath her, saying, “Grieve not. Thy Lord has placed a rivulet below thee; “And shake towards thyself the trunk of the palm-tree; it will cause fresh ripe dates to fall upon thee. “So eat and drink, and cool thy eye. And if thou seest any man, say, ‘I have vowed a fast to the Gracious God; I will therefore not speak this day to any human being.’” (Chapter 19, Verses 23-27) According to these verses, the birth of Jesus took place at a time when fresh dates are found on palm trees in Judaea. That season evidently is in the months of August and September but according to the view generally accepted by Christians, Jesus was born on 25th December. [12]

Health Benefits of Dates There are lots of different varieties of the fruit, but the Medjool date is one of the best known, as it has a sweeter and stickier taste and texture than others. Some of the health benefits of dates include: •

Rich in protective antioxidants – Dates have a lot of antioxidant properties. These include polyphenols, carotenoids and lignans, which have been shown to help manage the risk of chronic disease.

May support bone health - Dates are a source of bone-friendly minerals including phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium. They are also a source of vitamin K which is needed for healthy, strong bones.

May be a useful sugar replacement - Date syrup is a paste made by blending dates with water. The syrup has a low Glycaemic Index and a lower fructose content than most other sweeteners. [11]

Qur'an's glory and splendour is the light of every Muslim's soul;

The moon may be favourite of others - our dear is Qur'an! Its likeness can't be seen in sight - we pondered much-

Why shouldn't it be unique? It is the pure Word of the Gracious.

An eternal spring manifests in every word of it;

No garden has such trait or an orchard like it there.

Surely. there is no like unto the pure Word of God;

It is a pearl from Oman or else a ruby from Badakhshan.

How can the word of man be equal to the Word of God?

One is ineffectual. one is mighty - the difference is plain! In Whose presence the Angels admit to their ignorance, It is not destined for man to equal Him in speech?

Man can never mal<e even the foot of an insect, Then how can he create this light of truth?

0 people! Pray defer unto the eminence of God

And hold your tongues if you have a whit of faith.

It is great disbelief to make someone equal to God;

Pray fear your Lord, friends, what lie and slur is this? If you do confess to the Unity of God's Person,

Then why is such polytheism hidden in your heart? What drapes of ignorance have fallen upon your heart!

You are in error - pray desist if you have fear of God.

We hold no malice. brothers; it's only humble advice-

If there be a pure of heart, we'll offer him our life and soul!

‫‪18 | Maryam‬‬

Now we shall select out of the creations of God a delicate creation, that is to say, a rose, and we shall set out the external and internal wonders by virtue of which it is admitted that it is beyond human power to create its match. We shall then prove that the wonders and excellences of the Surah Fatihah not only match the wonders of the rose, but also exceed them. The reason why I select this illustration is that on one occasion I saw in a vision that I was holding in my hand the Surah Fatihah inscribed on a leaf and it was so beautiful and attractive that it appeared that the paper on which it was inscribed was loaded with soft red roses which were beyond count. When I recited any verse of the Surah, many of the roses flew upwards emitting an attractive sound. Those roses were very large, delicate, beautiful, fresh, and fragrant; and by their ascending upwards the heart and brain were perfumed, overpowered, and drawn away from the world and its contents, on account of the matchless delights of the roses. From this vision, I gathered that the rose has a spiritual relationship with the Surah Fatihah and that is why I have selected this illustration. I shall first set out as an illustration the wonders, external and internal, that are found in the rose and shall then describe as a contrast the external and internal wonders of the Surah Fatihah so that a just reader should appreciate that the qualities, external and internal, that are found in the rose by virtue of which it is impossible to create its match, are found in the Surah Fatihah to a higher degree. Thus, I would also fulfil the indication that was conveyed to me in my vision.

It will be admitted without hesitation that a rose, like other creations of God, possesses such qualities that a man has not the power to create its match. These qualities are of two types. First, those that are manifested in its appearance. They are that its colour is most attractive, and its smell pleases the heart, and its body is soft, fresh, delicate and clean. Secondly, there are the inner qualities with which it is invested by God, that is to say, the qualities that are inherent in it. These are that it pleases and strengthens the heart, upholds all the faculties and spirits, operates as a laxative, and strengthens the stomach, liver, kidneys, arteries, the womb, and lungs. It is very helpful in a coma and in weakness of the heart, and is useful in many other physical ailments. On account of these two types of qualities, it is believed that the rose is so perfect that it is not possible for any human being to make a flower which should be attractive in colour and in fragrance, and should be fresh and soft and delicate and clear like the rose and in addition should possess all those qualities that are possessed by the rose. If it is asked why is it believed that human power is not able to create its match and why is it not possible that man should be able to produce in an artificial flower all the qualities, external and internal, that are found in the rose, the answer is that this has been proved in practice, and that no philosopher or physician has been able to compound any medicines, or to devise a recipe, that would produce a flower possessing the appearance and qualities of the rose.

Tarbiyyat Page The following are some points taken from the translation of the Friday Sermon delivered by Hazrat Khalifatul Masih the IVra on February 10, 1989 on the training of Waaqifeen-e-Nau children.

Teaching Extra Care in Financial Matters “To give them broad-based general knowledge, those who can learn typing should be taught typing. They should also be taught how to keep account, and as I have said before there should be great emphasis on honesty. Dishonesty in monetary matters in Waaqifeen is terrible and sometimes bears dreadful consequences. Honesty is exceptionally important for a Jama’at that is running wholly and solely on voluntary chandajaat (donations). In other words, honesty is important for the protection and safeguard of our jugular vein. The financial system of the Jama’at is functioning on the basis of trust and honesty. If, God forbid, the members of the Jama’at were to perceive dishonesty in Waaqifeen-e-Zindagi and those employed in the finance department, their opportunity of giving chanda will be strangulated and they will not be able to give chanda even if they wished to. Therefore the Waaqifeen should be particularly good in their financial dealings. This is closely related with accountancy. Those who cannot maintain account sometimes make mistakes in financial matters and the observers think they have been dishonest. Sometimes those who do not know how to keep account make financial mistakes and then act dishonestly and it is the concerned official who is held responsible. By the Grace of Allah, the people responsible for the management of the Jama’at finance have such an exceptionally high standard

24 | Maryam

of honesty that is not paralleled by any other organization. Even then we can see certain shortcomings. Instances of intentional dishonesty are extremely rare but there are many cases where someone did not know how to keep accounts. Or someone did not understand his responsibility when he put his signature (on some document) or did not know what he should look at (before signing). Acts of dishonesty often occur under the supervision of a person who is not good at even elementary arithmetic and later on the poor man has to bear the blame. Sometimes after the investigation he is acquitted but often the matter remains unresolved and it cannot be determined whether he was dishonest or not. Therefore all the Waaqifeen children should know accounting from the very beginning. That is why I have talked about arithmetic. They should be good at arithmetic and should be taught how to maintain an account of money. This training can be given through every day grocery shopping. The Waaqifeen children can be made perfect in honesty, if they are asked to purchase grocery from time to time. For example, sometimes when children are asked to buy grocery they do not return the few surplus coins that are left to the parents. They are not being dishonest, it is their parent’s money and they do not see why they need to return it. This is the time for their moral training. They should be told that when they are asked to do shopping

they should return the balance, even if it is only one paisa. After that they may ask for ten rupees, there is no harm in that, but to pocket the one paisa left after the purchase sows the seeds of future (acts of) dishonesty and carelessness. Fall and rise of nations begins at home. Parents erect the great future (of the nation) in their homes when they take care of minute details in training their children. That is to say that great nations are made in their homes. Negligence in small matters (in childhood) often leads to big and serious consequences. Therefore, teach Waaqifeen children the subtleties of taqwa in financial matters because, whatever I have been saying is, in fact, related to taqwa. The obvious kind of taqwa is for the common people, the Waaqifeen children should be taught the most refined forms of taqwa in the minutest details in all matters.”1

Negligence in small matters (in childhood) often leads to big and serious consequences.

Some Instructions to Prevent them from Stumbling ‘‘In addition from childhood the Waaqifeen should also be made strong and obedient to the Nizaam-e-Jama’at (administrative set up of Jama’at). It is very important to affiliate them with Atfal-ul-Ahmadiyya, Nasirat-ul-Ahmadiyya and Khuddam-ul-Ahmadiyya. The responsibility of Ansar will come later. If the parents take good care of them up to the age of fifteen and as Khuddam, then the Ansar would rarely have any need to train them. When a bullet is fired with a gun that has a long barrel, it goes straight for a long distance. If the barrel of tarbiyat (training) would extend to the age of Khuddam then the child will remain on the right path till his death, except for what Allah wills. It is essential to teach children respect of the Nizaam-e-Jama’at. Do not say anything about the Nizaam-e-Jama’at in your homes that sounds derogatory or complain about an official of the Jama’at. Never complain about a Jama’at official in front of your children even if your complaint is valid. It will harm your children. You can protect your faith in spite of complaining but (the faith of) your children will be seriously damaged. Because in such a case, often the person involved suffers less injury, but the one who is watching nearby receives deeper wounds. The children of those parents, who criticize the Nizaam-e-Jama’at thoughtlessly are, more or less, definitely harmed and some are lost forever. This point should be explained to the Waaqifeen children and it should be emphasized that no matter what complaint they have against a Jama’at official, no matter how high were their expectations of him, they should not ruin their soul as a result of it. People usually have many expectations from the president of their Jama’at and if a certain expectation is not met with, then it should be explained to the

Maryam | 25

Waaqifeen-e-Zindagi, that their soul should not be allowed to perish because of it. This is again a harm similar to the one I have mentioned earlier. It is the official who stumbles but it is the onlooker who falls into the pit. The one who stumbles can still save his faith. He can repent and reform himself and very often he does not perish, unless his mistakes are of a particular kind, but those who have a tendency to stumble, are perished due to these mistakes. They become averse to religion and spread the germs (of their disease) among others. At their gatherings they narrate what a certain person did and thus they cause the ruin of a whole nation. So, first of all protect your children from this evil. When they are a little older explain to them that real love is for Allah and His religion. So they should never say anything that can harm the Jama’at of Allah. If someone hurts them or inflicts a loss upon them they have no right to spoil their environment and damage the faith of their friends and their children. They should be patient and keep their grievance to themselves and seek redress through the ways prescribed by Allah but avoid talking about it in public.”2

They should be patient and keep their grievance to themselves and seek redress through the ways prescribed by Allah but avoid talking about it in public.

Waqf in the Field: Pharmacist Kashifa Qamar

Your career choice is something that you frequently get asked about growing up. A decision you need to make at a very young age. Indeed, for Waqifeen-e-Nau, the concept of a career is unique and distinctive from the norm. Unlike many others who may choose their career path based solely on personal interests or ambitions, our journey is deeply intertwined with our faith and our dedication to serving the Jama’at. Our career choices are guided by a higher purpose – to serve humanity, promote our faith, and fulfil the needs of the community. Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih Vaba, in his address at the National Waaqifaate-Nau Ijtema UK 2016 reminded us of our responsibilities:

“As members of that fortunate group of people, who even amongst the believers, have pledged to fulfil their trusts and covenants above all others, you must realise the gravity and importance of your responsibilities. You are the people who have devoted your lives for the sake of your faith. You are the people who have pledged to forgo worldly pleasures for the sake of God Almighty”.[1] Thus, our career is not just a job; it’s a lifelong commitment to fulfilling the expectations placed upon us by Khilafat and the teachings of Islam.

28 | Maryam

My career journey has been quite an interesting one. While I had always been interested in the sciences, particularly chemistry and biology, I found myself at a crossroads when it came to choosing a university degree. One day, in my biology class we were being taught about the discovery of antibiotics by Sir Alexander Fleming. During that lesson, the topic of antibiotics and medicine in general sparked my interest and made me consider pharmacy as an option. That evening, I wrote to Hazooraba, seeking his prayers and guidance on this. Hazoor’s response, filled with beautiful prayers and support, served as a clear sign that this career choice was indeed destined for me and thus, I pursued my Masters in Pharmacy. During my final year at university, I was looking at applying for my pre-registration year, a training year pharmacy graduates must complete in order to be registered as pharmacists. Most applicants were required to go through a process of exams and interviews, leading to a ranking amongst other candidates which determined where they will end up working. Luckily, for me I was already working in a local community pharmacy who had offered to take me on for this year. During this time, I was fortunate to have a Mulaqat with Hazooraba in which I sought his guidance on whether I should complete my training in the community pharmacy I was currently working in or explore other options such as working in a hospital setting? Hazoor’saba response, “Why community? You won’t learn much there; you will be of more use in a hospital, so apply there” left a profound impact on me. With only a few days left before the exam and no time for proper revision, I was very nervous about whether I would still be able to get into my desired hospital. Despite this, I applied with faith in God and Hazoor’saba prayers. To my astonishment and gratitude, I was accepted into a hospital programme which was in my top 5 choices and that too just a short drive from my home! This experience served as a powerful reminder of the blessings of Khilafat, highlighting the guidance and support we, as Ahmadis and Waaqifaat-e-Nau, are fortunate to receive from our Khalifa every step of the way.

Maryam | 29

My journey in pharmacy has been a rollercoaster, filled with both highs and lows. The headlines often echo the struggles faced by the NHS, from insufficient funding to the pressures placed on its staff. Working in such an environment has been a profound experience, one that has imparted valuable lessons in resilience and perseverance. It’s a stark reminder of the importance of our work and the unwavering commitment required to provide quality healthcare to those in need, even in the face of adversity. One evening, after a particularly exhausting day at work, I found myself on the brink of reconsidering my career choice. I was drained, both physically and mentally. As I mindlessly scrolled through social media, seeking some sort of distraction, I stumbled upon a video that mentioned the time Hazooraba spent in Ghana. The sacrifices Hazooraba and Appa Jaan had made during their time in Ghana were awe-inspiring. It dawned on me that my current struggles were trivial compared to the unwavering dedication they had shown to our faith. My religion and my commitment as a Waqf demanded that I never give up, and that I should always turn to Allah the Almighty and His Khalifa for guidance. This incident served as a profound reminder of my Waqf and renewed my determination to persevere. My journey as a Waqf in the field, although relatively short so far, has been an experience that has imparted invaluable lessons. Throughout this journey, beloved Hazooraba has consistently been my guiding light, not only through his wisdom, guidance, and prayers but also through his own example as a Waqf-e-Zindagi in Ghana, which serves as a poignant reminder of the depth of our own commitment. May Allah continue to guide us all on this path, and may we all have the privilege to fulfil our Waqf and serve as dedicated servants of our beloved Khalifa. Ameen.

Dedication to Faith and Personal Development: A Call to Waaqifaat-e-Nau Waaqifaat-e-Nau from Canada blessed with meeting Hazooraba

A group of Waaqifaat-e-Nau from Canada was blessed with the opportunity to meet Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad, Khalifatul Masih V, may Allah be his Helper, in a virtual Mulaqat on 11 June 2023. Hazrat Amirul Momineenaba conveyed his Salaam and on seeing the Waaqifaat-e-Nau on the live stream, he enquired about the number of Waaqifaat-e-Nau and whether they were solely from the Toronto region or from all across Canada. The response revealed that there were 910 Waaqifaat-e-Nau present, from 13 regions. Hazooraba asked about the total number of Waaqifaat-e-Nau in Canada. He was informed that the total number of Waaqifaat-e-Nau in Canada is 2284. Hazooraba then called Amina Jerryullah Sahiba to recite a portion of the Holy Qur’an. Maira Pasha Sahiba recited the English translation. Upon hearing the English translation, Hazooraba addressed the Waaqifaat-e-Nau, emphasising the importance of knowing Urdu and mentioning that the Urdu translation should also have been presented. Shamaila Khan Sahiba presented a hadith of the Holy Prophetsaw, and Sufia Atta Sahiba read out the English translation. Thereafter, Mehek Ahmad Sahiba recited an extract from the Malfuzat (sayings and discourses of the Promised Messiahas). Anosh Sajid Sahiba then presented the English translation. Bariya Mahmood Sahiba had the opportunity to present a

32 | Maryam

poem, composed by the Promised Messiahas, and Adeela Javed Sahiba provided the English translation. Hazooraba enquired whether Lajna members or just Nasirat were present. Hazooraba was informed that both Lajna members as well as Nasirat were seated in the hall. Furthermore, it was mentioned that there were a total of 662 Waaqifaat-e-Nau between the ages of 12 and 15 in the Tajnid. Thereafter, the Waaqifaat-e-Nau had the opportunity to ask Hazrat Khalifatul Masih Vaba various questions on an array of matters. Mohsina Sahiba asked how we can guide our young children, who are being taught many un-Islamic and confusing concepts at school. Hazooraba asked the questioner if she is married and how many children she has. She replied that she is indeed married with three children. Hazooraba elaborated that out of the 365 days in a year, children spend only around 170 to 180 days in school. “For the remaining time, they are with you,” Hazooraba emphasised. He mentioned that on numerous occasions, he has advised parents to establish a friendly bond with their children. It is important to engage with them, address their questions, and inquire about what they have learned in school. When children encounter topics such as gender or other confusing concepts, Hazooraba advised parents to reassure them that they are still young and will gain a better understanding as they grow older. Moreover, Hazooraba emphasised the need to explain the reality of these things to children. Hazooraba stressed that parents should teach their children that Allah has created biological differences between males and females. A mother is a mother, and the distinction between males and females is evident. Parents should explain that even if a biological man erroneously decides to identify as a mother, he cannot give birth. Hazooraba said that these individuals themselves are turning into objects of ridicule by their own people due to how this issue is being presented to the extent that even jokes about this situation are now becoming widespread in Western society. Hazooraba used one such example to demonstrate the extent to which this issue has become convoluted. Hazooraba emphasised the importance of conveying to Ahmadi children that Allah has created human beings in a specific manner and that humans cannot alter that at will. Hazooraa stated that significant efforts will be required to explain the correct concept effectively. It is essential to teach your children that Allah has designed males and females with distinct biological differences, Hazooraba said. Hazooraba addressed the shifting dynamics within educational institutions and shared an instance where a teacher referred to a student as “he,” and the student informed the teacher that they preferred to be addressed as “she” that day. When the teacher addressed the same student as “she” the following day, the student declared that they identified as “he” for that particular day. Hazooraba described this as a recent and confusing development, indicative of an unsettling trend in societal norms. “These people themselves have no idea what they will do.” Hazooraba said that Ahmadi parents will have to explain this matter to their children.

Maryam | 33

“Rather than panicking, engage in conversation and explain the matter to your children,” Hazooraba said. Ayesha Ahmad Sahiba stated that human privacy has been significantly impacted by social media. She asked for a solution to address the aftermath of this impact on human privacy caused by social media. Hazooraba explained that in the past, when people heard something about someone, they would pass it on to others. However, the extent of spreading rumours was limited at that time. “Now, with the advent of social media, rumours spread rapidly and widely.” Consequently, Hazooraba advised that that was the reason he had previously suggested turning off cameras, phones, and other devices during Jamaat events, especially for Lajna, and cautioned against unnecessarily posting everything on social media. Furthermore, Hazooraba added that Allah the Almighty has prohibited engaging in gossip, spreading false information, and speaking ill of others. It is essential to refrain from indulging in such negative behaviours. Privacy is being compromised, and it is due to the actions of humans themselves that this damage has occurred. Hazooraba emphasised the importance of being mindful in such circumstances. It is crucial to educate the Waaqifaat-e-Nau, those around us, children, students, and siblings about the negative implications of these actions. Hazooraa suggested that the Waaqifaat-e-Nau should write articles in local or national newspapers, raising awareness about the harmful effects of social media. By doing so, the Waaqifaat-e-Nau can effectively play their role in addressing this issue. Kazima Asim Sahiba enquired about the significance of rukhsati in Islam and why individuals are instructed not to meet their spouse alone after the nikah until the rukhsati has taken place. Hazooraba said that she was correct in stating that Islam recognises nikah while the elaborate function of rukhsati – as it is celebrated nowadays – is a traditional practice. Hazooraba further clarified that once the nikah is performed, both individuals are considered husband and wife from the Islamic perspective. Hazooraba said that from an Islamic perspective, the main and essential element is the nikah. Instead of spending excessive amounts on multiple pre-wedding functions such as mangni (engagement), nikah ceremony, shaadi (wedding), and before that, mehndi (henna ceremony), it is preferable to focus on the simplicity of the process. Hazooraba suggested that the money saved from extravagant expenditures could be used for the wedding of a less fortunate individual. Hazooraba emphasised that the rukhsati should be conducted in a simple manner. Hazooraa further mentioned that even during the time of the Holy Prophetsaw, marriage ceremonies were conducted in a humble and straightforward manner. In fact, some companions’ weddings were so simple that the Holy Prophetsaw himself was unaware of them. Hazooraba then shared an incident where the Holy Prophetsaw noticed a colourful mark [of perfume] on a companion’s clothes and enquired if he had gotten married. Upon confirming it, the Holy Prophetsaw advised holding a wedding feast (walima), even if with one sheep. Here Hazooraba alluded to the Holy Prophet’ssaw words of: (Sahih Bukhari, Kitab al-

nikah). Hazooraba emphasised that both the nikah and walima are necessary. Adeela Qaiser Sahiba enquired whether it is mandatory for Muslim women to wear an outer covering such as a burqa or a coat, even if they are already dressed in modest and loose clothing that does not expose the shape of their bodies. She also asked about the wisdom behind wearing an additional outer covering when the outfit underneath is already fully modest. “You’re quite right,” there is no wisdom in this if one’s dress is already modest and loose. In Islam, where the concept of purdah is mentioned, it does not specify wearing a coat. The act of layering clothing in such a manner is a convenience adopted by women for their own comfort. The Holy Qur’an instructs women to draw their head-coverings over their bosoms because otherwise their facial beauty and body features are exposed. The burqa or a coat that some women have adopted is simply a matter of convenience for them. Islam commands that if one’s dress is modest and loose, and their body features are not exposed, then drawing head-coverings over their bosoms is sufficient. This is the true essence of the Islamic commandment. If this approach is suitable for an individual, they may choose to follow it. It is worth mentioning that women in Pakistan for example, those residing in villages and the northern areas, also adhere to this method of wearing purdah. Hazooraba clarified that the burqa has not been made obligatory in Islam. However, observing purdah and dressing modestly is indeed necessary. It is important to ensure that one’s body figure is not exposed in any way. Hazooraba remarked, “There is wisdom within every commandment of Islam, but unfortunately, people have shattered that wisdom through their innovations.” Kashifa Hameed Sahiba asked what message Hazooraba would give to those who argue that allowing women to have jobs, employment, and professions goes against Islamic tradition or undermines family values. Hazooraba explained that if a woman has a profession as a teacher, doctor, or any job that brings benefit to mankind, there are no restrictions on pursuing such careers. However, it is important to note that solely prioritising work and neglecting the responsibilities of caring for children and the home is not advisable. First and foremost, it is the duty of the man to provide for the family. Allah the Almighty has clearly outlined the responsibilities of both men and women. Hazooraba shared an incident where a woman approached the Holy Prophetsaw and expressed that men participate in jihad, earn money outside the home, and contribute more through financial sacrifices and other tasks that women cannot do while staying at home. The woman asked if they would also receive rewards for their efforts. In response, the Holy Prophetsaw stated that if women fulfil their duties by taking care of their homes and raising their children, they will receive the same reward as men who engage in jihad. However, in times of necessity, women would also participate in defensive wars by distributing water. Hazooraba mentioned the example of Hazrat Umm-e-Ammarara, who would even wield a sword and fight to defend against the enemy. Hazooraba emphasised that women can work in situations where it is required. However, it is crucial not to work solely out of greed while neglecting the fundamental responsibilities of taking care of the home and properly raising the children.

Nudrat Chaudhry Sahiba pointed out that there is an increase in misogyny and violence against women, and she expressed concern that certain social media influencers are negatively influencing Muslim youth in this regard. Hazooraba reassured her, asserting that the imprudent social media influencers she is alluding to are indeed in the minority. He then said, with a smile, that in contemporary societal dialogue, there is an overwhelming emphasis on women’s rights, so much so, that it may appear to some as though men’s rights have been eclipsed. Hence, she need not be overly worried. Nevertheless, Hazooraba emphasised that the Holy Qur’an places great emphasis on women’s rights. It clearly states that both men and women will be rewarded for their deeds. Nowhere does Islam state that women are the property of men to do with them as they please. Hazooraba mentioned that he had delivered numerous lectures on women and Islam, and encouraged taking quotes from those lectures to raise awareness about the fundamental teachings of Islam regarding women’s rights and the guidance provided in this regard. Tashifa Imtiaz Sahiba expressed that during extremely stressful moments in life, she feels that Allah may be testing her. She mentioned that she found herself getting distracted and struggling to focus on her prayers. She requested Hazoor’saba advice on how to strengthen her bond with Allah and maintain steadfastness during stressful times. In response to the question, Hazooraba advised that when one realises that they may be undergoing a test from Allah, they should earnestly pray and supplicate, saying, “If this trial is a consequence of a sin I have committed, then please forgive me.” It is important to offer sincere prayers during salat and concentrate fully while doing so. Additionally, one should pray for Allah’s protection and ask for His help in overcoming the difficulties if it is indeed a trial. For those who do not have faith, there may seem to be no way out. However, for a believer, the way out of trials is to pray to Allah, seeking His intervention to end the trial and to protect and safeguard them. One should never be ungrateful, as such circumstances do not last forever. In times of ease and prosperity, it is crucial to express gratitude to Allah and offer thanks to Him. Allah promises that if you are grateful, He will increase His blessings for you. During salat, one should pray and make prostrations, saying: and . Hazooraba emphasised that these prayers are simple, yet it is important to first understand and internalise their meaning and significance fully. Hazooraba then enquired about her plans, to which she replied that she would begin medical school in September. Upon hearing this, Hazooraba expressed his delight and said, “Excellent!” She then requested prayers for her success in acquiring knowledge and serving the Jama’at. Shanza Farzana Zafar Sahiba mentioned that as Waaqifaat-e-Nau working mothers who have completed their education and are following Hazoor’saba guidance, encounter difficulties in Canada due to the limited duration of maternity leave, which is one to one-and-a-half years at most. She enquired whether this time frame is sufficient or if it is advisable to stay at home for a longer period to better raise their Waqfe Nau children.

“You should decide for yourself whether one to one-and-a-half years is sufficient or not,” Hazooraba advised. If there is someone at home, such as a grandparent, who can look after the child while one works to contribute financially, then it is acceptable to entrust the child to their care. However, if you are working as a hobby or for non- essential reasons, it would be better to consider taking a leave of three to four years. Hazooraba shared that some qualified doctors in America had met him and shared their experiences. They mentioned that when they had a baby, they made the decision to leave their jobs in order to personally care for their child. Once their child reached the age of four to seven and started attending school, they resumed their professional careers. They specifically sought jobs that allowed them to be home before their child returned from school, ensuring that they could be actively involved in their child’s upbringing and provide proper care and attention. Hazooraba explained that the decision regarding work and parenting depends on the nature of one’s profession and individual circumstances. Each person has their own personal requirements and responsibilities that they need to consider when making such choices. Izza Atif Sahiba asked for Hazoor’saba guidance regarding individuals who have experienced a divorce and feel apprehensive about getting married again. Hazooraba advised that it is important to pray for favourable circumstances and seek Allah’s guidance. Hazooraba prayed that Allah may protect them all from such difficult situations. Hazooraba further emphasised the importance of supplicating to Allah. Sometimes, relationships may not work out, but there are numerous examples of individuals who have found happiness after divorce by praying and entering into a new marriage. Hazooraba shared that many people have experienced this positive change in their lives. Hazooraba reaffirmed that according to Islam, it is recommended for divorced or widowed individuals to get married. Addressing Sadr Sahiba, Hazrat Khalifatul Masihaba enquired whether the Amila was also present, to which she responded affirmatively. Considering the time difference between Canada and the UK, Hazooraba asked whether the Waaqifaat- e-Nau had already had breakfast or if they were planning to have it now. Sadr Sahiba replied that they had been provided with snacks earlier, and now they would be served breakfast.

Then, addressing the Waaqifaat-e-Nau, Hazrat Amirul Momineenaba said:

“Waaqifaat-e-Nau should remember that if they wish to continue this bond [of dedicating their lives], they should strive to improve themselves. They should focus on fulfilling their obligations towards prayers and pray to Allah the Almighty for their religious and worldly progress. Being women, they should also pray for favourable circumstances and their future – they should pray a great deal. Furthermore, they should always remember that they are meant to be role models for others. Simply carrying the title of ‘Waaqifaat-e-Nau’ is not enough; they should set positive examples in their conduct, in terms of prayers, and ethical values. They should also strive to enhance their religious knowledge, and not merely pursue worldly education. To find the answer to many of the questions you ask, you yourself should also make efforts for it. The secretary of Waaqifaate-Nau should arrange programmes for the exchange of views, and discussions, and interactive sessions and to enhance their religious knowledge. The girls themselves should also make efforts to increase their religious knowledge. Through studies, worldly knowledge will be gained automatically, the real essence lies in gaining religious knowledge and strengthening their relationship with God. May Allah enable you to do so.” Hazrat Khalifatul Masihaba then conveyed his salaam and the meeting came to a successful end. Reflections ON VIRTUAL MULAQAT WITH BELOVED HAZOORABA

Sobia Iqbal, Canada The excitement started from the minute I opened the email. The Canadian Waaqifaat-e-Nau would be part of a virtual Mulaqat with beloved Hazooraba. I immediately called my Sadr Sahiba to ask for details, and then told my Waaqifaat-e-Nau friends to make sure we could all gain the blessings of this amazing opportunity. I remember going to work the next day and talking to my Waaqifaat-eNau colleagues, sharing in the delight of the future. I put in a request to ask a question and it was approved. Alhamdolillah! As the day grew closer, I attended the rehearsals for those asking questions and repeatedly practiced my question so it would be perfect. I was a little nervous but the excitement outweighed it. The night before the virtual Mulaqat, I drove to Peace Village to stay the night with my cousins as it would be a very early morning. Most of the night, I was barely able to sleep because I knew I would be seeing my beloved Khalifa soon. On Sunday 11th June 2023, I woke up at 4am and let my enthusiasm fuel me as I got ready to go. As my cousin and I made the short walk to Baitul Islam

Mosque, I had never been happier to be awake so early. It was a cool morning with a bit of drizzle, and as we approached Tahir Hall, we could see the long line of Waaqifaat-e-Nau waiting to be seated. The ambience was indescribable, with so many young women awake and elated. Volunteers were running around making sure that everything was ready, and I felt grateful to be part of a community that cared so deeply. We made our way through the line and registration and found our seats. I was seated with the others asking questions and waited for the Audio/Visual teams to finalise their checks. I went up to practice my question in the mic during the check and that was when I started to feel a bit more nervous. But I took a few deep breaths, and I said a quick prayer, and I felt alright again. The moment that beloved Hazooraba came on screen was surreal. I was hit with a wave of adoration and awe, and once again, gratitude. I am grateful to have a leader who makes time for his people, grateful to be in his presence, and grateful to everyone who worked hard to make this moment happen. The class began and we sat intently, hanging on to every word that beloved Hazooraba was saying. I made sure to take notes, hoping to capture as much of this experience as possible, and I saw other Waaqifaat-e-Nau scribbling in their notebooks as well. Beloved Hazooraba shared valuable wisdom with us about faith, modesty, contemporary issues, and more. It felt like Hazooraba was looking directly at me when he spoke, although there were hundreds of Waaqifaat-e-Nau there. Hazooraba told jokes and spoke in a way that was easy to understand. By the end of the class, I knew I would not be able to ask my question. So, when beloved Hazooraba said time was up, I wasn’t disappointed about my question; I was disappointed that the time flew by so quickly! Many loved ones came up to me with sympathetic comments, but I didn’t feel upset about my question. How could I? I had just been in the presence of beloved Hazooraba! I was just so truly happy and grateful for the opportunity, what more could I need? Even afterwards, everyone I spoke with felt the surrealness of the entire experience. I can’t describe how blessed I am to have been among the Waaqifaat-e-Nau to attend the blessed virtual Mulaqat. I only hope to have more opportunities to see my beloved Imam and experience the blessings of Khilafat. Insha’Allah.
