HICKORY’S HERITAGE

A Proud Heritage H

ickory, North Carolina can trace its furniture history back to the earliest part of the 20th century and a young merchant named George W. Hall. Standing in front of his general mercantile business on Hickory’s main street, Hall would watch the long freight trains rumbling through town, bearing load after load of southern lumber headed for furniture factories up north. North Carolina had only a few furniture factories at that time. In 1890 the state had only six furniture plants employing fewer than 200 employees. In 1901, Hall and a group of other Hickory businessmen and bankers decided that some of the region’s lumber should be used to build furniture in Hickory. When these entrepreneurs organized the town’s first furniture factory, Hickory Furniture Company, Hall was only 28 years old. Despite his youth, Hall successfully managed that first plant and within the year he helped to start the town’s second furniture manufacturing business, Martin Furniture Co. The natural trade routes along the rivers in the region provided an artery by which both designers and craftsmen flowed into the Catawba Valley region in the early years of the 20th century. With the craftsmen came the knowledge and skills to train the abundant and willing labor force available in North Carolina’s foothills. There was no unionization in the industry, and workers were plentiful and eager to work. By the 1920s and 1930s, more furniture plants were forming as the industry spread throughout Hickory and the surrounding areas. But the Depression years were especially hard on the industry because furniture was still considered a luxury and many people could barely afford food, much less furniture. Although some companies went under, others managed to stay afloat, due to smart mergers, frugal policies and loyal employees. With the end of World War II, the furniture industry experienced its biggest boom as returning military veterans looked for jobs that would enable them to build homes and buy new furniture for their families. Hickory area companies grew and split off, creating even more new furniture companies. As generation followed generation in the business of crafting furniture, Hickory and the Catawba Valley became the furniture manufacturing capital of the nation. A Second Industry Is Born In 1960, a second industry arose to support the burgeoning furniture industry when a handful of furniture manufacturers gathered for the first time to display their products to retail dealers. This wholesale exhibition was held on the site of what is now known as Hickory Furniture Mart. And so the Mart became the hub of the wholesale furniture exhibition business and would flourish for decades in western North Carolina. In 1985, Hickory Furniture Mart decided to open its doors — previously open 8|

only to wholesale members of the trade — to the public for the very first time. Within a short decade, the Mart was the nation’s leading manufacturer-related furniture center and one of North Carolina’s top visitor attractions. Hickory Furniture Mart proudly celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2010 with its past and present customers, vendors, manufacturers, tenants and countless friends within the furniture industry. The Mart continues to transition in an effort to better meet the needs of its customers in this ever changing environment. Today, Hickory Furniture Mart’s expansive complex is comprised of four-levels housing 100 factory outlets, stores, and galleries, representing nearly 1,000 of the most recognizable brand names in the furniture industry. In addition to the acres of professionally decorated furniture showrooms, the Mart complex offers an on-site pet friendly hotel as well as a gourmet café and a coffeehouse with Wi-Fi internet access, both locally owned. The premier manufacturers represented throughout the Mart include most major quality domestic manufacturers as well as accessories, fabrics, imports, art lighting, rugs, wall coverings and additional home furnishings. People from every state and visitors traveling from several international countries visit Hickory Furniture Mart each year, with approximately 500,000 people visiting the Mart annually. Furnishings purchased at the Mart may be found in celebrity homes, apartments, condominiums, mansions and castles all around the world. The Mart has been highlighted in the New York Times, Newsday, Los Angeles Times, Woman’s Day and many other national publications. The Mart has also been showcased on the “Oprah Winfrey Show” and the Discovery Channel’s “Interior Motives with Christopher Lowell.” Hickory Furniture Mart is truly the Ultimate Furniture Destination. CONTEMPORARY FURNITURE

Trends in Contemporary Furniture T

oday’s consumers are feeling the need to stay in and enjoy their home environment more. Entertaining at home is extremely popular now and people want to decorate their homes in order to reflect their lifestyles while making their space more inviting to guests. With today’s technological advances, quality family entertainment is a major

focus in many homes. Plasma TV’s on warm wood-toned stands now sit in front of simple-shaped sectionals covered in microfiber fabrics or fine leather. Mixing colors, shapes and textures has become an important aspect of the contemporary style. Although steel and aluminum are still used in many contemporary designs, woods are becoming a strong key element

as well. In keeping with the warm and cozy environment, dark chocolate and espresso hues are being incorporated into many dining, bedroom and accent pieces. Many people are mixing microfiber fabric chairs and accent pieces in with their leather settings. It seems that durability and easy maintenance are two strong desires of the current contemporary customer. Consumers are surrounding themselves with furniture that makes them happy and also shows their strong sense of personal style. Items such as art, throws, rugs, ottomans and vintage pieces have become the accents of choice in today’s contemporary market. Eclecticism and contrasting styles remain the major themes within contemporary designs today. The home theatre category has grown tremendously over the past few years. Most people are staying at home more and spending their time and money creating an environment that will promote connecting with their family and friends. People enjoy seeing a variety of sectional and sofa groupings so that they can envision how this type of seating could work in their own personal space. This concept works well for accommodating large groups of people and promotes the ability to lounge around and be comfortable. Environments are less “fussy” and more about simplicity and subtlety. The trend is moving towards “cozy” and “calm” and people are surrounding themselves more with items that are comfortable yet reflect their own personal styles, as opposed to perfectly matching every room in their home. Contemporary furniture is becoming increasingly more popular each year. If you don’t wish to incorporate a contemporary style throughout your entire home, it is still fun to experiment with small sections within your home. A little piece of contemporary can go a long way! HFM Contributed by Reflections Home Furnishings www.hickoryfurniture.com • 800-462-MART

FABRIC CHOICES

Choosing the Right Fabrics for Your Home W

hat is the first thing you notice when you look at a sofa? Is it the frame? Probably not. Is it the style? Maybe. Is it the fabric? Almost always. Your fabric selection can either make or break a room. Many decisions must be made before you are able to come to a conclusion on what type of fabric to use in your home. You must first decide whether or not you prefer a certain color, style or if you will be blending in an inspirational piece that has been passed down to you as a family heirloom. Fabric makes a statement on furniture, over windows or wherever it appears. It is often believed that the fabric content determines how a fabric will wear, but it is actually the weave of the fabric that helps determine this. Manmade fabrics are popular choices and are very classic and elegant, but natural fabrics are much easier to maintain and are also more resilient. Certain blends may be selected to receive the best of both worlds. The new trends in fabric are represented through cryton fabrics and outdoor fabrics, which are commonly used inside recreation rooms and

sunrooms. Since outdoor entertaining has become so popular with today’s baby boomers, many consumers tend to look at fabrics that will withstand the outdoor elements in a suitable manner. There is also a new trend to use faux suedes, faux leathers and faux silks. Sometimes it is impossible to notice the difference between the real fabric and the faux fabric. Contrary to popular belief, you can use a combination of several fabrics in each room of your home. One used to be told that you could only use a total of 3 fabrics in any given room. Now the trend is to use as many as you desire, as long as there is an even flow in the room. Take a look inside your closet. It is often a good indicator that what you wear is also what you want your home to reflect. Fabrics can make statements through patterns, prints, stripes, plaids, solids, textures and colors. You may use trims to add accents to furniture, pillows or window treatments. After all, trim is considered the “jewelry” of the finished piece.

In choosing the right fabrics for your home, do what is comfortable for you. The ultimate goal is to walk away happy with the decisions that you have made. If you change your mind in the future, it is just as easy to go back and re-define your home by choosing another fabric to represent your new preference or personal style. ACCESSORIES

Upgrading Your Accessories

Foyers Foyers are all about first impressions. When guests walk through your front door, this is the first space that makes them feel welcome. Interesting lighting and colorful oriental rugs are two primary ways to set the tone. Ahmed Chaudhry, Manager of Ziba Oriental Rugs, said that updating or adding a new rug is one of the easiest ways to revive a room. “We have thousands of rugs to choose from. You can see it, like it, buy it, and have it in your foyer within hours,” he said. David Mostafaloo, owner of Unique Oriental Rugs & More by David, comments, “A colorful rug at the front door really grabs your attention. There are usually 8 to 45 colors in a single rug. I look at them as works of art.” Hanging a new chandelier or light fixture, adding a mirror or sconces are other ways to dramatically improve your foyer or entrance hall. Crystal fixtures are always in style, including transitional fixtures that are less formal. If space allows, a table with an intricate carving below an oversized chandelier can make 16 |

f you are looking to rejuvenate your home and make it even more inviting for family and guests, you can easily do so by upgrading your accessories. Think “floor, walls, ceiling,” and you can create small changes that will freshen up your room and completely change the look of your home without investing too much time or money. Oriental rugs, art, mirrors, lighting and various accessories can transform individual rooms into warm, inviting entertainment spaces. Think of everywhere you will be entertaining your guests — foyers, dining rooms, living rooms and family rooms — and by just changing a few items in every room, you can totally transform the look of your entire home.

a dramatic impression. No one is going to walk under it, so you can bluff a bit on the traditional height in order to give it more presence. If guests have to walk around it, they certainly are going to notice it. Adding a unique table in your foyer area also can make it the perfect place to showcase an impressive piece of pottery or crystal. Dining Rooms Entertaining usually involves food, including dinners where family and friends gather around the dining table. A new rug in the dining room can change the entire atmosphere of the room. Rugs are usually the largest segment of color in a room, next to the walls. When shopping for dining room rugs, 8x10 is normally the minimum size for dining rooms because it is important for the chairs to stay on the rug. Shoppers may also take a seat cushion from their dining chair with them in order to assist them in selecting their new oriental rug. Dining rooms, along with foyers, are typically the area where most people hang their chandeliers. Traditional brass and crystal chandeliers can really dress up a room, while fixtures made of both

wrought iron and crystal tend to give rooms a less formal look. Dining rooms also lend themselves well to large mirrors, and most showrooms inside Hickory Furniture Mart carry mirrors, lamps and additional accessories. Your dining room also can be dramatically transformed by adding new pieces of well-lit art that soften the feeling and create a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. Grab the attention of your guests with a large piece of artwork that simply cannot be ignored. Art In any room, a colorful new painting or striking photograph can give new life and captivate family, friends, and guests. Particularly popular on the art scene are Giclees (zhee-clay), which are individually produced, high-resolution reproductions of paintings that are printed directly onto the canvas. Considered the most accurate form of original art reproduction available, the process uses archival inks designed to last for 70 years or more. Like oriental rugs, art can be taken home to immediately transform a room. Guest Baths Guest bathrooms or powder rooms are usually fairly inexpensive to transform. Adding a small oriental rug, hanging a mini chandelier, mirror or sconce, choosing that perfect piece of art or adding additional forms of lighting to your guest bath can instantly change the look and feel of your room. Choose a theme such as Asian, Italian, botanicals, birds or anything else you prefer, and look for creative and unique ways to blend this theme throughout your home. Rejuvenating your space by upgrading your accessories can be fun and affordable when visiting the many factory outlets, shops and galleries inside Hickory Furniture Mart. Hickory Furniture Mart’s Factory Outlets Offer Bargains and Great Selections

H

ickory Furniture Mart, long recognized as the nation’s leading home furnishings resource, attracts savvy consumers from all over the world to shop at its 100 factory outlets, stores, and galleries. It’s one of the top visitor attractions in the state of North Carolina. Hickory Furniture Mart has an unmatched reputation as the Ultimate Furniture Destination for designers and first and second home owners. Several popular furniture manufacturers house their factory outlets inside the Mart and offer fine furniture at tremendous discounts to the public. Factory outlets always have been an important part of the tenant selection at Hickory Furniture Mart. Hickory Furniture Mart is unique because of the mixture of high quality outlets and first line showrooms, all

located under the same roof. Increasingly, shoppers are drawn to factory outlets for several key reasons. Discounts are offered off already low prices. It is not unusual to find even larger discounts, such as a leather chair and ottoman priced less than one-third off the original cost. Surplus high-end fabrics by the yard or bolt are also offered at below wholesale prices to the public and reupholstery services are available if needed. Kimberly Causey, the author of The Furniture Factory Outlet Guide, was quoted on MSN Money as saying, “If you want the absolute best deal, travel to North Carolina and shop at the factory-owned furniture outlets. The savings typically run 65 to 80 percent off normal retail prices.”

In addition to price, there are other benefits to shopping at the factory outlets inside Hickory Furniture Mart. Because customers are able to buy directly off the showroom floor, they can take their furniture with them or have it shipped immediately to their home. Customers can buy exactly what they see and receive instant gratification. This is particularly appealing if you find out that you will be hosting guests at the last minute. Occasionally, customers are even able to buy one-of-a-kind, unique items not available to anyone else. Manufacturers design samples specifically for the High Point Furniture Markets and these pieces may never even go into production so they are sent and sold to the public at see “bargains” on page 22

their outlets inside the Mart. So where do all of these bargains come from? The factory outlets at Hickory Furniture Mart often sell furniture that has been shown as a showroom sample at one of the two International Home Furnishings Markets held each spring and fall in High Point, North Carolina. Some of their inventory also comes from discontinued lines or production overruns. Other pieces may be custom orders that retailers or customers have cancelled for one reason or another. At Century Furniture Showroom & Factory Outlet, much of their inventory comes from Century Furniture’s 15 designer showrooms that stretch from Boston to San Francisco. Evan Bledsoe of Century Furniture said, “When we re-do a showroom, that furniture needs to go somewhere, and most of the time it comes to our factory outlet in Hickory. Often this is some of the very best furniture we have.” There are some common characteristics of people who enjoy shopping at furniture outlets. Some are looking for that specific piece, such as a dining room table, others may just be looking generally for a real bargain and start at the outlets to see what they might be able to find. they decide to furnish their second home or their rental property. Factory outlet customers tend to enjoy picking out their furniture themselves. They want to put a personal stamp on their homes and they know they can find unique items inside outlets. Many customers will go to the factory outlets first, buy what they can find there, and then go to the other furniture retailers to complete their rooms — or in some cases, their whole home. People used to brag about how much they spent on an item. Now, people talk about how much they saved. These days, everybody loves a bargain and at the factory outlets inside Hickory Furniture Mart, you can really find some great deals. The inventory at factory outlets changes daily. While that attracts customers who like to see what new items have arrived, it also means that when customers see something they like, they should not hesitate to buy it immediately. Once it’s gone there’s no guarantee that you’ll find another one like it. At Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams’ spacious factory outlet, most of the furniture is what is described as “urban to suburban,” A sign in the showroom addresses their inventory: “It changes by the minute. With our floor samples in constant evolution, every time you shop with us, it will be like the first time. When you find something you like, we recommend you buy it immediately, before your so-called best friend does.” And another sign sums it up: “Everyone needs an outlet. Even us. We have created this outlet to help manage the continuous flow of our market samples, factory overruns, and discontinued items. As a consumer, this provides you with an ever-changing assortment of well-designed, quality merchandise priced at an extraordinary value. We hope our outlet provides you with comfort for the mind, body and wallet.” Make sure you visit all the factory outlets located inside Hickory Furniture Mart and take advantage of all the incredible deals they have to offer on a daily basis. DESIGN GROUPS

Design Groups Travel to the Mart ach year groups of out of state designers travel to Hickory Furniture Mart for the sole purpose of purchasing furniture for themselves and their clients. Andrew Limone, Owner of Andrew Limone Interiors in Florham Park, NJ has been bringing his design groups from New Jersey to North Carolina for many years. When asked why he travels such a great distance, this is what Mr. Limone had to say: “Hickory Furniture Mart is an incredible resource. They offer a quality product with vast selections at tremendous discounts. I like the fact that everything is located under one roof and I can browse through each showroom with ease. The sales staff throughout the Mart is also very friendly and knowledgeable. Since I work with clients from different locations, it is extremely important to have a reliable shipping service available to transport the furniture I select back to them. I always enjoy my time at the Mart.” Hickory Furniture Mart looks forward to working with Mr. Limone and his design groups on an annual basis. In fact, each year designers from all over the world are being referred by their clients and colleagues to the Mart. Many of the showrooms inside Hickory Furniture Mart now offer discounts for professional designers and design groups. Special hotel rates are also available at the Mart’s on-site hotel or at several partner hotels

ashington DC area resident, Rebecca Stokes wanted to redecorate her condo but was too busy to devote the hours it would take to go through individual furniture stores to shop and compare prices and options. ”I was after a designer look without having to shop for it” she said. Then a friend recommended Designing Women’s new Platinum E-Design program available at their design showroom located inside Hickory Furniture Mart. Created to meet the needs of busy professionals who would rather spend valuable free time traveling, entertaining friends or just going to the gym, Platinum E-Design gives you all the benefits of hiring a certified interior designer while being able to work virtually from your home. Sally Bentley, professional interior designer and owner of Designing Women, has been helping customers navigate throughout Hickory Furniture Mart for over 10 years. The Mart offers the most diverse selection of showrooms under one roof and makes furniture shopping very convenient and efficient. After clients started referring their own children who had limited travel time due to their busy work schedules, Sally realized that she could simply ask them a few questions over the phone or through emails, and her design team could take it from there to create an extensive digital presentation that met their every need. “We handle all the furniture shopping, color selections, furniture placement and even take care of all the accessories, which pulls everything together. Young professionals thrive on achieving a look that is totally unique and reflects a sense of their own style and personality. You can’t accomplish this by shopping at big box stores” replies Sally. “There are hundreds of high quality furniture lines that are available at our fingertips and today’s technology makes our design services conveniently available to virtually anyone.” The design team is headed up by Sally Bentley who shares her office with Donna Chamberlain and Kirsten Hart, all highly experienced certified designers, bringing together extensive portfolios of creative design projects.

SLEEP ESSENTIALS

Tips on Getting a Good Night’s Sleep o you wake up feeling refreshed, alert and ready to meet the many challenges of the day? If not, here are some tips to help you get there: • Keep regular hours. Try to go to bed and wake up around the same time every day, including weekends. • Develop a “sleep ritual.” If you do the same thing each night before you go to bed, it will train your body to get ready for sleep. • Take some time to relax and unwind before you go to sleep. You may want to try stretching, relaxation exercises, a hot shower or bath, meditation, or even a glass of hot milk to help you relax and prepare yourself for sleep. Avoid activities that may be emotionally upsetting a few hours before going to bed. • Avoid caffeine and other stimulants (such as pseudoephedrine, an ingredient in many cough and cold medicines) in the evening. • If you are taking a diuretic (such as furosemide or hydrochlorothiazide), take it in the morning. Diuretics increase urination, and this may keep you up at night if you take them later in the day. • Avoid drinking alcohol right before bedtime. Alcohol can interrupt sleep, leading to a poor quality of sleep. • Keep a journal by your bed. Write down any unresolved issues or thoughts from the day that may still be on your mind. This will help release these worries from your mind so you can sleep peacefully and address these issues in the morning.

• Get a comfortable mattress. If you wake up feeling stiff and/or sore, or if you aren’t sleeping as well as you were a year ago, it may be time to invest in a new mattress. A good mattress should gently support all points of your body and give you enough room to move freely. • If you smoke, consider quitting. Smokers have more trouble falling asleep and also wake up more often during the night than non-smokers. • Make your bedroom “sleep friendly.” Your room should be kept cool, dark and quiet. If you are bothered by noises around you, try using a pair of foam earplugs, a fan, music or a white noise generator to block out the distraction. • Exercise regularly. This can help relieve stress and make it easier for you to sleep. Don’t exercise too close to bedtime if you find that this makes it harder for you to sleep. •A void watching TV or reading in bed. Your bed should be reserved for sleep and intimacy. • If you are having trouble sleeping, get out of bed to read or watch TV. Return to bed when you start feeling tired. Try not to constantly look at the clock. •D on’t feel guilty about going to bed. Think of sleep as an investment in your health and productivity. If you try these tips and still find that you’re having trouble sleeping, talk to your doctor. You may have a medical condition that is affecting your sleep. Also, check with your pharmacist to find out if the medications you are taking could be affecting your sleep. HFM Copyright MediResource Inc. www.hickoryfurniture.com • 800-462-MART

SLEEP ESSENTIALS

Surroundings That Affect Your Sleep

Y

Temperature: Make sure that your room is well ventilated and the temperature is set between 68-72 degrees. Heat is more disruptive to sleep than noise. As we sleep, our body temperature naturally drops a degree or so. If a room gets warmer while our body lowers its temperature, it’ll work against our natural system and actually begin to wake us up. Light: When it comes to creating the ideal sleep environment, darkness is the way to go. Melatonin production improves when it’s completely dark, so you automatically sleep better. If you cannot completely darken your room, consider buying blackout curtains or using a sleep mask. Position your alarm clock and any other digital displays so that you cannot see them. Use low blue light bulbs for all of your nightlights. Sound: We naturally sleep better when it’s quiet. Incorporating low levels of ambient sounds, such as white noise, fans or even relaxation music can mask most household disruptions (clocks chiming, equipment cycling on and off). If necessary, use comfortable earplugs to block out any additional noises (sirens, pets, loud neighbors). Avoid watching television in bed. If your partner wants to watch TV, you can ask them to wear headphones to control the noise. Bedding/Sleepwear: Avoid heavy bedding. Instead, try several light layers that can easily be removed to accommodate your body temperature at different stages throughout the evening 34 |

our sleep surroundings affect how well you sleep. You must consciously create an environment that promotes deep, healthy sleep, which will allow you to wake up refreshed and ready to start your day. Here is a list of sleep enhancers and some simple tips on how to improve your sleep patterns:

and into the morning. Wear loose clothing if perspiration is a problem for you. Pets: Your pets may be your best friends, but not at night. Constant movements and sounds will wake you up and their body heat adds to yours. Kids: Be sure that your children have a healthy sleep environment of their own to ensure that nothing is waking them

up or keeping them from falling asleep in the first place. If they do disrupt your sleep, make a plan with your sleep partner in advance and decide who will take care of them that evening so that at least one of you can get some rest. SHOPPING TIPS

Today Show Furniture Bargain Expert Shares Her Tips on Planning Your Trip to Hickory Furniture Mart I always tell my shopping tour members: “A successful shopping trip to Hickory Furniture Mart begins before you ever leave home, although preparation before you leave home can make your shopping trip a breeze after you arrive in Hickory.” If possible, bring floor plans of your home. Sometimes you need to know the exact lengths of each Kimberly Causey wall and the exact placement of all windows and doors in each room. Be sure to note the height and placement of any chair rails or wainscoting you may have. Also be sure to record the ceiling heights in each room. Don’t forget to pack a measuring tape and notepad for the trip. Remember to bring swatches of all fabrics, trims, and rugs as well as paint chips. If you find a great deal on a sofa, you will need to be sure it will match your existing carpets, walls, and window treatments. Remember, your outlet purchases are non-returnable, so you need to be certain that your new selections won’t clash before you make your final purchases. If you plan on purchasing fabric at the Mart for window treatments, consult with a drapery workroom to calculate the correct yardage, including allowances for repeats. A “repeat” is the length of a particular design element or print that is duplicated over and over as the fabric is unrolled. When your window treatments are made, extra fabric must be allotted to match the pattern at each seam. Your drapery workroom or seamstress will be able to tell you how many repeats are needed to allow for pattern matching. Don’t forget to bring a digital camera to capture any furniture pieces that catch your eye. It is much easier to flip through photos on your camera to compare different furniture pieces than it is to try and remember from one store to another which styles you liked best. There is so much to choose from at the Mart that the choices can be a bit overwhelming if you are not organized. Bring a small sampling of photos with you of styles you like. If you arrive in Hickory without a specific idea of what furniture styles appeal to you, it will be much harder to sort through all the choices after you arrive. Take some time before you leave to tear out pictures from magazines of styles that appeal to you. This is the easiest way to communicate 800-462-MART • www.hickoryfurniture.com

your taste and style preference to the showroom designers throughout the Mart. Do your research to find the best travel offers available. Hickory Furniture Mart partners with several area hotels in order to save you money on your overnight accommodations by offering Shop & Stay packages and special Furniture Shopper Rates. There are also special showroom promotions and incentives offered throughout the year so make sure you check the Mart’s website periodically (www.hickoryfurniture. com) and connect with each showroom to find out about all future promotions. COURTESY OF REFLECTIONS HOME FURNISHINGS/AMERICAN LEATHER

Aniline Leather: A leather dyed with pure aniline dyes rather than pigments. This transparent dye completely penetrates the hide with color, allowing the natural grain to show through while protecting the surface. Antiquing: A method of aging the appearance of a hide by the application of a darker color over a lighter color, creating dramatic highlights. Buffing: A mechanical process that reduces the appearance of surface blemishes from leather hides. Leather that is not buffed is called “full grain” because the natural grain retains its markings and characteristics. Cowhide: The entire animal hide, which averages 45-50 square feet. Embossing: Impressing a pattern onto the surface of the hide to create a motif or texture. A very even and uniform pattern is created, possibly to disguise natural defects or blemishes, or to create visually exciting designs.

Fat Wrinkle: Natural wrinkles in the leather grain that are a part of its unique beauty. These are only visible in top grain leathers. Finishing: Any processing performed after the initial dyeing such as buffing, embossing, milling, spraying, waterproofing, waxing, etc. Hand: A term that describes the leather’s softness and feel. Natural Grain: Leather whose grain has not been altered in any way, so the natural appearance of the grain is apparent. Protected: Leather whose surface is coated with pigment or other opaque solution for uniform color and cleanability. The natural marks on the hide cannot be seen. Split: The under portion of a hide or skin that has been split into two or more thicknesses. Splits may be finished and embossed to simulate a full top grain, but are not as high quality. Splits are often used for suede. Suede: Leather produced from the flesh split, exhibiting a velvetlike nap. Suede splits are not top grain leathers and do not have the same strength and integrity. Top Grain: The top layer and highest quality part of the hide. When leather is split in processing, the top grain is the upper portion of the hide. Because of its strength and beauty, this supple layer is the standard of fine upholstery. HFM Reference: Elite Leather, www.eliteleather.com www.hickoryfurniture.com • 800-462-MART

ADDITIONAL TIPS

A Professional Interior Designer Shares Tips for Shopping at Hickory Furniture Mart

W

henever I make a trip to Hickory Furniture Mart, I enjoy browsing through all the unique showrooms, outlets and galleries. Having been to the Mart at least 50 times, I have a method for my personal shopping strategies. • A lways pick up the newest issue of the Kate Gladchun Mart’s Buying Guide. I check the direc- Interior Designer, Detroit, Michigan tory and scan for any new galleries or outlets that may have opened since my last visit. • Be sure to pick up the most recent HFM floorplan (also available at the entrance desk) to determine where your shopping adventure will begin. • Take a walk through the entire Mart first to get the lay of the land before you begin your serious shopping. You should also remember to bring any floor plans or photos with you, and don’t forget your measuring tape, camera and comfortable walking shoes. • To help your mind stay organized, determine your route. Are you going to (1) visit all of the outlets first and then move onto the other showrooms? (2) Start at the fourth level and work your way down? (3) Start at the first level and work your way up? I prefer the first choice, but if it’s your first visit to the Mart, you might want to understand the layout and choose the second or third option to make things a bit easier. • Be sure to place a small check mark and make any necessary notations next to the name of each showroom you visit on the map. This will help avoid the confusion later of wondering if you have already visited a specific showroom or where you fell in love with that perfect red sofa! • Make a note of where you can stop for a snack or a meal. This will be important as the day progresses! You’ll definitely need a break to collect your thoughts and review your options so far. In the first phase of my shopping excursion, I try to follow these steps: • I usually scour the outlets for special deals and look for any off-the-floor specials in all the other showrooms. I determine if there is a specific piece of furniture or decorative item that might work best in the shape, size, and style I need. I don’t necessarily look at the fabric it’s covered in or the color of the wood. These things can be easily changed if the price is right. You will need to spend some time scouting for these exciting buys. • You have to determine whether or not a certain piece of furniture will be a good buy at the price that is being offered. 800-462-MART • www.hickoryfurniture.com

Consider whether or not you will need to change the fabric or decide if it will work “as is.” Keep an open mind and be flexible and you will see that there are several options available to you that you may have never even considered before. Think about using a piece as is and paint the wood or even the fabric! • Remember that there are also major sale events and special promotions throughout the year and you may be able to discover some additional buying incentives during these times. As you enter each showroom, check for signs posted near the doors or ask a salesperson if there are any additional discounts being offered that day. The second phase of the shopping excursion is usually much easier. If you have done your homework, you probably have determined exactly what you are looking for in regards to size, color, style, etc. You may still need to finalize fabric and trim selections, but you probably already have a good idea of what you want to purchase. Most sales staff are very straightforward and will give you their honest opinion. It is very helpful to have a magazine or catalog picture with you, in order to give the salesperson an idea of your style preference. It will also save time when trying to compare the features and designs between two different pieces. Here’s a list of essentials to take with you on your shopping trip: Floor plans Camera Tape measure Comfortable shoes Lightweight totebag Color samples of your painted walls Fabric swatches from other furniture you own Fabric swatches for reupholstering a new piece Floor plans of your project Photographs of the rooms you are furnishing A sweater or sweatshirt — room temperatures can vary throughout the building on different levels Switch from a purse to a fanny pack — one less thing draped over your shoulder Keep an open attitude and a sense of adventure! Based on these strategies and tips, I am confident that you will have a successful shopping experience and receive exceptional values every time you shop at Hickory Furniture Mart. HFM HFM | 47

FURNITURE TRENDS

he most powerful drivers in the home furnishings market today are baby boomers. Many of them are downsizing, requiring special attention to space utilization and furniture that’s functional. A large number of them are buying second and sometimes third homes where they spend a considerable amount of their time. With more leisure time, they enjoy entertaining and they want their homes to reflect their lifestyle and comfort level. And as many prepare to retire or semi-retire, they often feel the need to have an office at home. Consumers, especially baby boomers, want furniture that is comfortable and relaxing, and also reflects their own personal style. Now, consumers show a preference for furniture that is functional, even multifunctional, rather than basing their decisions solely on appearance. For example, end tables can be tiered with shelves to hold books and other objects. Chests and ottomans can double as end tables and provide storage space in a down-sized environment. Taste in furniture also mirrors broader interests. One of the hottest trends is to purchase pieces that relate to wine — small wine tables, wine bars, and wine storage cabinets that allow people to store wine, display it, open it, and serve it. Another strong segment is furniture which houses the array of electronic equipment that people now display in their homes, such as plasma televisions and surround sound systems. Gone are the boxy armoires that were used to hide televisions. Now more people prefer single or mounted wall units and smaller consoles, cabinets and shelves throughout. Brian Gee of Hickory Park Furniture Galleries said one of the strongest sectors of his business in regards to baby boomers is in home office furniture. “It isn’t just retirees, although they’re a big part of the market. A lot of people are working from home now and need an office. And there are younger people who just feel the need to have work space at home. Until five or six years ago, people generally went to office supply stores to purchase their office furniture. Now they are coming to furniture stores where the quality usually is much higher and the selection is much larger,” Gee said. “Now they are buying real furniture for their home offices.” Outdoor furniture is also an important part of his company’s business, he said. “Baby boomers and consumers of all age groups seem to be entertaining at home more often these days and doing more of it outside.” There are also some regional preferences, such as metropolitan classic design from people living in New York and other large cosmopolitan cities and lighter colors in fabrics 800-462-MART • www.hickoryfurniture.com

from Florida customers. Leather furniture still has a very broad appeal, because people buy it to fit their lifestyles. Leather is very family friendly and holds up well for families with children and dogs. When it comes to fabric colors, furniture generally follows fashion. For example, brown is a strong fashion color, many times replacing black. In furniture, chocolate browns, and other colors — including blue and green — paired with brown are now very popular in upholstered pieces. Sally Bentley has perhaps the broadest perspective on what customers want these days. She runs her design business (Designing Women) inside Hickory Furniture Mart. Most of her clients come from NY and FL, followed by OH and TX, then CA and other neighboring western states. “Virtually all of my customers want their home furnishings to reflect where they are in life. Most of my clients are 45 or older, so they are established, successful, and in the prime of their lives. They want their homes to be comfortable. I keep telling them that they need to be open-minded when looking at the vast selection of furniture out there, but always stay within your comfort zone and you can’t go wrong.” HFM HFM | 49

veneer construction in conjunction with solid woods or wood products. That combination can be more durable and stronger than a piece that is completely made of solid wood. Although not usually finished, the back of case pieces should be sanded smooth and panels should be inserted and screwed into the frame. Any glass tabletops should be tempered. Maintenance of Wood Furniture Caring for your fine wood furniture is quite simple. Dust frequently with a soft, lint-free cloth that has been moistened or treated with polish. Carefully vacuum around your furniture to avoid nicks and scratches. Lift, don’t slide, lamps and other objects sitting on tabletops. Avoid placing wood furniture directly in the path of a heat source. Overexposure to sunlight can adversely affect the finish, so furniture should be rearranged from time to time and accessories rotated. Dirt should be removed from all wood furniture with mild soap on a barely damp cloth, then rinsed and dried with a clean cloth. Protective pads should be used under hot dishes and spilled liquids should be promptly removed by blotting. The manufacturer of your wood furniture has the knowledge and expertise on how best to maintain it, so make sure you save all product tags and directions for future reference. HFM

uality wood furniture will last a lifetime and beyond. Antique stores are proof of that. Although quality often can be easier to see in wood furniture than in upholstery, there still are certain things you should know before selecting furniture made of wood. Test all moving parts such as drawers, trays, doors, adjustable shelves and table leaves. Make sure they move easily and fit properly. Check to see that drawers have glides and stops, that the interiors are smooth and that hardware is sturdy and bolted from the inside. Inspect the underside of all furniture. Joints should be reinforced with screws and nails and they should be free of excess glue and filler. Heavier pieces should possess triangular corner blocks. Dining chairs should feel heavy and substantial. Make sure they are the right height for those who will be using them. Finish is a matter of personal preference, but whatever the finish, it should have a rich glow. The wood should feel smooth to the touch and there should not be any visible bubbles or streaks. The grain should be uniform, flowing naturally throughout. In extension tables, the leaves should match the rest of the piece when in place. Artificial graining does not necessarily mean lower quality, but if the grain has been artificially enhanced, the manufacturer’s tag should reflect this. Don’t assume that solid-wood furniture is necessarily better than furniture that is veneered. Most furniture is a mixture of

Shipping Your Furniture Home Safely W

e realize that you may have traveled hundreds, even thousands of miles to make your furniture purchases. Finishing Touch Freight Services, the Mart’s consolidated shipping service, is located on Level 4 at the South entrance. They will see to it that your merchandise is transported safely and professionally to your home after you leave. Shipping charges are separate from your furniture purchases. The stores that you purchase from will still honor any shipping discounts they are offering even if you decide to consolidate your complete order through Finishing Touch Freight Services.

Finishing Touch Freight Services works with professional in-home delivery businesses and can arrange shipment of your furniture to anywhere in the world. We encourage you to stop by their office during Mart hours, call 800-874-6486 (toll free), 828-431-4766 (local), fax 828-431-4765, or email service@finishingtouchfreight.com to make all of your shipping arrangements. If you wish to consolidate your purchases into one shipment, you will need to place all of your orders in the same name and fill out the “Request for Consolidation of Merchandise” form located at each Guest Services desk or inside the Finishing Touch Freight Services office, located on Level 4. Turn in your form to the Finishing Touch Freight Services office as soon as you are finished shopping, even if you don’t want your furniture shipped right away. Merchandise that is purchased and is “ready-to-go” off the showroom floor can be shipped separately from special-order merchandise. If your purchases total 500 pounds or more, you may split-ship your order and receive the same discounted rate as if all the furniture were shipped together. You must let Finishing Touch Freight Services know which furniture you would like 64 |

to ship first, and which may be delivered at a later date. If your merchandise needs to be stored for a longer period of time, please discuss this with Finishing Touch Freight Services so that they can inform you of any related storage fees. Typically the carriers are willing to store furniture for 60 days before any storage fees are incurred. A representative at Finishing Touch Freight Services can help you decide which will be the best course of action for your own personal situation. You may contact Finishing Touch Freight Services at any time for information regarding your order, including the name of your assigned delivery company and whether or not all stores have released your purchases to the delivery company for shipment. All remaining balances must be paid and all stores must release your furniture before shipment can be scheduled. Just a friendly reminder that the estimated delivery times below start AFTER all account balances have been paid and all furniture has been released by each showroom: Southeast: 2-3 weeks East Coast: 2-3 weeks Midwest: 4-6 weeks West Coast: 6-8 weeks Your assigned carrier will notify you at least 48 hours before your home delivery is scheduled. Please make sure that the shipper has your correct delivery address and phone number and it is important to confirm that the shipment includes all of the furniture you purchased from each showroom. Be sure to clear enough space in every room where your furniture is scheduled to be set up. You may be asked to provide an extra person at your home to assist with unloading your furniture if any single item weighs more than 350 pounds or if any large, heavy furniture must be carried up stairs or through narrow turns. Upon arrival of your furniture, please have payment for all freight charges available. Approved forms of payment include certified check or money order. Payment is required prior to unloading any of your merchandise. It is extremely important to carefully inspect each piece of furniture as it is unwrapped and brought into your home. If there are any damages, you must refuse the damaged item and contact Finishing Touch Freight Services immediately. Make notes on your bill of lading regarding any damaged or missing items so that the situation can be addressed promptly by the carrier. For additional information on consolidated shipping services, please contact Finishing Touch Freight Services directly at 800-874-6486.
