Since launching Warehouse Home in 2014, we have tracked a sharp rise in the popularity of loft living. Our global readership confirms that this is an ever more popular lifestyle and aesthetic. So, we are excited to reveal in this fifth issue of Warehouse Home magazine, the debut Warehouse Home coffee table book. Featuring the most inspirational homes around the world, in former factories, textile mills, spice warehouses and pumping stations, it celebrates authentic industrial features and exceptional architecture and design. Industrial Garage ERICA SEVERNS ARCHITECT Property developer John Parker Willis was responsible for the conversion of Hyde Garage, dividing the former industrial property into seven residential units and retaining one for himself. Willis stipulated white oak flooring, Carrara marble and a light colour palette for his impressive 2,770-squarefoot apartment. In the lovely bedroom, understated décor in soft pastel tones reflects the raw concrete and ensures a huge steel truss transecting the original factory window is the principal focus. Line details in the furnishings serve to subtly balance the heavy-beamed ceiling, painted white, above.

Shoe Factory ANGUS POND ARCHITECTS A compact yet immaculately conceived apartment in a 1930s shoe factory in London’s Clerkenwell is the residence of Dexter Fletcher, who is a director of film and theatre, and Dalia Ibelhauptaite, a director of opera and theatre. For this creative couple, architecture is akin to script-writing. So their brief to Angus Pond Architects was to transform their flat while preserving its authenticity and distinctive details, and to create a home that was deeply personal. An original fire door inspired the grey palette. A new open floorplan ensures the old metal-framed windows, which still have their oversized levers, can be appreciated throughout.

surface corrosion of metal. Sinuous veins of colour evoke a sense of urban decay, while the use of a rich midnight blue elevates the concept to sophisticated splendour. Physical processes behind the wallpaper’s design inspired its name Acro-, from Nosca Inc’s personal fear of heights or Acrophobia. 17 Patterns artist Paris painted lines and drips onto a canvas from a great height. Creative collaborator Christina K then applied eroding techniques to this artwork. Finally, the piece was expertly digitally manipulated and transformed in the studio by Nosca Inc. RESPONSIBLE READING Alison Simpson Limited Edition Warehouse Home mirror Scottish artist Alison Simpson specialises in paper-based design. She used damaged copies of Warehouse Home Issue Four to create this original frame for a circular mirror. Shredded magazines were combined with pulped cotton linters, a byproduct of the clothing industry, to give rigidity. The combined materials were then pressed firmly into a round mould before being left to dry out. Used sparingly, gleaming homewares are a glamorous modern counterpoint to industrial design and bare metal. Sleek oily finishes are far from crude; these iridescent homewares are shining examples.

SPECIAL EFFECTS German designer Meike Harde conceives experimental processes to re-think common manufacturing. Wooden Aquarelle, a colouring technique for wooden surfaces, involves clamping wood panels onto waterproof frames and adding pigmented water. After drying, the panels are varnished, fixing their iridescent-style colouration.

A vintage leather gym mat was the starting point for this smart bedroom arrangement in a warehouse conversion. Hanging, it becomes a sizeable headboard beneath the enormous original windows and offsets the dark exposed brickwork. A palette of dusky pinks and neutral shades softens the industrial space, while the juxtaposition of various textures, including soft woven leather, sheepskin, luxe velvet and linen, creates an inviting environment for early nights and morning lie-ins. This is an exercise in style.

Harbour Desire Hong Kong is a colourful melting pot, influenced by years of British rule and boasting a vibrant culinary scene. Interior designer Joyce Wang is renowned for her industrial aesthetic, original use of materials and sensitive depiction of cultural nuances in design. Her latest project, Rhoda, is a restaurant with a difference.

hoda is at once true to Hong Kong’s past and present and a subtle reflection of its British chef’s passions and practices. Stepping from the bustling street and through the oversized raw-steel garage doors, guests are greeted by expanses of smoked and burnt metal, charred wood and reclaimed material. It’s an impressive industrial setting that cleverly evokes the menu as well as the urban environs. But Rhoda is far from being Wang’s first major project in Hong Kong; in fact it follows several other very successful restaurant schemes across the city. AMMO, a vibrant Mediterranean restaurant in the Asia Society headquarters, is housed on the site of a former explosives compound built by the British army in the mid-19th century. The interior decor of the restaurant (opened in 2012) pays tribute to that cultural and historical significance. Raw materials reference the military and industrial context, with chandelier shades crafted out of bent copper mesh. But luxurious materials such as leather and velvet were selected to offset harder edges and textures. Six metre high ceilings enhance the dramatic nature of the space and its decor. Then came Haymarket, in 2013, robust and cinematic. And in 2014, Mott 32 opened beneath the Standard Chartered Bank landmark, its interiors a fantastical rendering of an immigrant’s travels. (Main) Interior designer Joyce Wang worked closely with head chef Nathan Green to conceive an interior scheme that reflected his individual style of cooking. Burnt walls reflect the chef’s culinary techniques. Washing-machine drums hanging above the bar were smoked as a reference to his charcoal grilling. A similar treatment is also carried through in the choice of timber cladding on the restaurant’s walls and columns; Wang chose shou sugi ban, a traditional Japanese method of smoking and preserving wood which gives it a stained look. On a more personal note, Nathan’s love of hot rods and vintage car restoration inspired the use of copper detailing in the restaurant.
