Lublin – Gate to the East | Night of Culture 2012

Towards a Dream City... Night of Culture This is the most important night in the cultural life of our city, a unique manifestation of its great artistic variety. This innovative project gives all cultural institutions, associations, foundations and freelance artists an opportunity to present themselves in front of a large audience. During this special night, admission to all events is free of charge. The entire city, all of its institutions, streets, plazas and parks transform into art space. Although admittedly Night of Culture was inspired by other similar events across Europe, since its launch in 2007 it has gradually gained its unique flavour due to Lublin’s specific cultural genius loci. What makes it even more extraordinary is that inhabitants of the city, who welcomed it with great enthusiasm and interest as audience, with time became co-creators of its programme. The main theme of this year’s edition of Night of Culture is “Lublin- Gate to the East” and we have invited artists from Ukraine to create it with us. Our aim is to show Poland and Europe the rich culture of Lublin and our neighbours and to present the benefits of international artistic cooperation. In the programme of this year’s Night of Culture we have placed special emphasis on joint projects featuring contemporary art, though there is no lack of events to do with cultural heritage of both countries.

European Stadium of Culture This year, Lublin’s Night of Culture is also a part of a larger project, the European Stadium of Culture, initiated by Mr Bogdan Zdrojewski, the Minister of Culture and National 2

Heritage. The European Stadium of Culture is a PolishUkrainian programme of social and cultural cooperation, implemented for the time of 2012 UEFA European Football Championship. Its underlying aim is to present the social and cultural potential of Poland and Ukraine, to show how it helps to distinguish our countries from others in Europe.

European Stadium of Culture 2012: Lublin and Rzeszów Lublin and Rzeszów, two cities located near the border, will jointly carry out a programme relating both to the sports events and Polish-Ukrainian cooperation. The final stage of the European Stadium of Culture will begin on 2 June, Night of Culture in Lublin and will end during events taking part in Rzeszow between 29 June and 1 July. The project is executed by National Cultural Centre, City of Rzeszów, The “Estrada Rzeszowska” Art Institution, City of Lublin and Workshops of Culture in Lublin. This cooperation is a response to an agreement signed by Polish and Ukrainian governments in which both parties declared their support for artistic and cultural projects implemented with the participation of representatives of both countries in time for Euro 2012.

Lublin – Gate to the East For many years, Lublin has provided the space of dialogue between Western and Eastern Europe, it has been a space where Eastern and Western cultures intertwined. Our city is especially close to Ukraine, with which we are developing increasingly stronger economic, political and educational cooperation. The closeness to the border and

good artistic contacts with our closest neighbours have for years permitted us to develop cooperation and mutual understanding. This Lublin- Ukrainian joint Night of culture is a continuation of our consistent Eastern mission- which has taken the form of Competence Centre for Eastern Europe (Centrum Kompetencji Wschodnich)

Eastern Competence Centre Eastern Competence Centre is a think-tank actively supporting the development of Eastern Europe and working towards building trust between the European Union and its Eastern neighbours. The Centre has been established by the President of Lublin City, the Marshall of Lubelskie Voivodeship and UNDP for Poland in order to integrate the international cooperation of Lublin local governments, organizations, companies and universities. Its task is to support cooperation with Eastern and Western Europe as well as Asia, and it will work within seven major programme areas: Civil Society, Efficient Management in Administration, Culture for Development, Science and Education, Business Relations, Social Innovations, Sustainable Development.

Night of Culture 2012 – Programme The programme of Night of Culture 2012 was created in cooperation with Ukrainian partners, governmental cultural institutions, numerous non-governmental institutions and informal groups, created either on demand or for permanent operation by artists, managers, cultural entrepreneurs and academic environments. The programme of this extraordinary Night includes hundreds of events: concerts, theatre and dance spectacles, conjurer performances, happenings, exhibitions in galleries and outdoor in the city space, film screenings, literary meetings and debates. The programme also includes sightseeing, special projects for children as well

as spontaneous, improvised artistic and social actions of artistic and social significance. Almost all events during Night of Culture will take place in the city centre, which will be especially adapted to the occasion. The main arteries of the city will be closed to vehicle traffic to form a several kilometre long passage – The Avenue of Cultures. It will connect two key city sites. One end of the Avenue is the Holy Trinity Chapel in Lublin Castle, famous for its Russo-Byzantine frescoes, symbolizing the interweaving of Eastern and Western European cultures. Its other end is the University Campus, the space of youth and innovation. Thanks to original scenography as well as concentration of artistic events within this centre, the Avenue of Cultures will become a unique and vibrant space of artistic expression and social activity. Other events will be taking place in nearby areas: the Lublin Philharmonic Hall, museums, theatres, galleries and art studios.

Night of Culture – Organisation: The coordinator and main stage director of events during Night of Culture are Workshops of Culture. The programme, comprising several hundred events, has been crafted from numerous projects submitted by cultural institutions, non-government organizations and freelance artists in response to an open call for applications. These entities are the heart and soul of Night of Culture, acting as both its directors and main actors. The success of such an event requires close-knit cooperation of project creators, local government units as well as heath service, police, municipal security guard service and public utility services. In great part we owe the successful implementation of this event to the fantastic support of a number of volunteers. Last but not least, efficient execution would not be possible without the local patriotism of all entities involved. The magic of Night of Culture helps to become better and happier. It is a commonwealth of citizens heading towards a Dream City. 3

Lublin – Gate to the East | Night of Culture 2012

Prelude to Night of Culture Night of Culture will officially kick off on June 2, but the Night of Culture Festival Club, located in “Alchemia” Complex in ul. Olejna 2, will open as early as Friday 1 June. And… the programme also includes events taking place in the morning. The Festival Club will open its doors to guests on the eve of Night of Culture. For those who may wish to begin early, the organizers have prepared a special music programme.

Night of Culture Festival Club “Alchemia” Complex, ul Olejna 2 1.06 (Friday):

18:00 Jazzująca gramofonia 21:00 Tatvamasi 22:30 Angela Gaber Trio 00:00-1:30 Skype Jam Session Lublin School of Photography Exhibition Also on Saturday, 2 June there is no need to wait until the evening. The first event of Night of Culture will begin at 9 am in the Potocki Palace (ul. Staszica 3). It will be “Photo Marathon”, co-created by the Language Acquisition and Teaching Chair at the Institute of Romance Philology of John Paul II Catholic University in Lublin and the French Embassy in Poland The marathon is scheduled to end at 18:00. Between 11:30-15:00 “Węglin” District Community Centre (ul. Judyma 2a) invites guests to participate in the

18

opening of the project “Art Booth”, to see the exhibition “Butterfly Collection” by Jakub Pieleszek as well as presentations prepared by the participants of artistic workshops organized by “Węglin” District community Centre and to take part in cultural games and contests.

Workshopping Night of Culture For some artists, Night of Culture began a few days before its official opening. The majority of events required earlier preparations, rehearsals and workshops. Dancers and traceurs, acrobats, breakdancers and crag climbers had an opportunity to take part in workshops (28 May – 1 June), in preparation for the project “Bodies painting cityscapes”, carried out jointly by Lublin Dance Theatre and the choreographer Willi Dorner. We will see the results of their work during Night of Culture. At same time, Janusz Bałdyga was also workshopping his project focused on art in open space. His purpose was to create an action plan, where the emphasis is put on dynamic communication, based on the nomadic idea of a journey. The key element of the workshops was the myth of the road and the strategy involving moving, or “marshalling” the clear, visual structure formed by the workshop participants. You will be able to see the effects of the work on June 2, in Litewski Square (Plac Litewski) during “Performance Art Meeting”.

CITY CENTRE

3 Workshops of Culture, ul. Popiełuszki 5, Hall 18:00-2:00

“Ars Loci” Contemporary Art Exhibition Ars Loci- The art of place is an art which is related to a given cultural circle within a specific territory existing in a real and physical space. But what is it? Is there any indicator? Is it the local difference

determined by the genius loci or perhaps a microworld of art which is a reflection of the global and commonplace macro-world? Or perhaps it is about mental, rather than physical, corruption by a given place, a bias of space rooted in the artist, regardless of his present location? “Ars Loci” tries to address these questions. Exhibition will run from June 1 until 12 August 2012. Artists: Tomasz Bielak, Jakub Ciężki, Grzegorz Czarnota, Lucjan Demidowski, Mariusz Drzewiński, Eliza Galey, Łukasz Głowacki, Katarzyna Hołda, Kilku.com (Łukasz Gładysz, Aleksander Janas, Grzegorz Sołowiej, Paweł Szarzyński, Aka Velalias, Robert Zając), Piotr Kmieć, Dariusz Kociński, Dariusz Korol, Andrzej Kot, Artur Kot, Tomasz Kozak, Jarosław Koziara, Łukasz Krankiewicz, Danuta Kuciak, Alicja Kupiec, Robert Kuśmirowski, Zdzisław Kwiatkowski, Konrad Maciejewicz, Tomasz Malec, Sławomir Marzec, Irena Nawrot, Kosma Ostrowski, Urszula Pieregończuk, Michał Pikula, Sławomir Plewko, Ireneusz Puchacz, Paulina Sadowska, Marcin Sudziński, Katarzyna Szczypior, Mariusz Tarkawian, Waldemar Tatarczuk, Sławomir Toman, Grzegorz Tomczyk, Magdalena Warszawa, Ewa Zarzycka, Tomasz Zawadzki, Jerzy Zyśko

“Red Elvis”, a spectacle by Arabesky Theatre Theatre “Arabesky” was founded in 1988 by students of theatre department of the Kharkov Institute of Arts. At the beginning, they focused principally on laboratory work, presenting the results of experiments to wider audience. Nowadays, apart from laboratory work, they present their spectacles in “Soroka Devjaty” Theatre in Kharkov, they also frequently participate in international festivals, both in Ukraine and Western Europe. Red Elvis is a project by a young married couple – Valenty Paniuta and Tetiana Michiney. While waiting 19

for the birth of their child, the couple documented the progress of Tetiana’s pregnancy. This led to the creation, in cooperation with Serhiy Zhadan to the spectacle Red Elvis. It is a very acerbic, ironic and up-to-date text composed of six stories: “How to lose weight without dieting?”, “How to prepare an unforgettable corporate party”, “How to preserve the refuge of home”, “How to say no to advertising agents”, “How to buy food in supermarkets?”, “How to kill everyone?”. It is a kind of a textbook for lonely pregnant housewives who should be able not only to survive in contemporary consumer society but also to preserve the freedom of the still unborn child. The spectacle is in Polish only.

21:30-23:00

Nic co ludzkie - Nothing that is human. Spectacle. The InVitro Pre-Premiere Stage (Lublin) The InVitro Pre-Premiere Stage is the first Polish theatre whose productions are all pre-premieres. The plays produced by the theatres have never been staged in Poland and not infrequently they are also worldwide pre-premieres. The theatre was founded in 2007 by Łukasz Witt-Michałowski who has been its director from the very beginning. InVitro is involved in the Centre for Culture in Lublin as an integral part of its theatre stage- The Central Theatre. InVitro focuses on producing, its spectacles are directed by various directors, actors and scenographers. Nothing that is human consists of three independent parts which are connected by a common theme. Each of the parts was directed by a different artist: Łukasz Witt-Michałowski, Paweł Passini and Piotr Ratajczak. The spectacle is thus able to juxtapose scenes based on testimonies of witnesses of the Kielecki pogrom with the accounts of former prisoners of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp and fragments from the book by Jan Tomasz Gross, Strach (Fear). The spectacle was awarded a Team Award and recognition award for music during the 14th All-Poland Competition for Best Staged Contemporary Play. 20

6 The Square in front of H.Wieniawski Lublin Philharmonic Hall, ul. Skłodowskiej 5 19:00-20:00

Lublin Dance Theatre – Bodies in urban spaces A performative project created in cooperation with Willi Dorner (Austria), which uses dance and motion (or lack of thereof) to interfere in the physical layout of the city and its buildings. The performers move from place to place and “perfect” selected elements of urban architecture (fragments of buildings, streets, pillars, stairs etc). By doing so, they will surprise the audience by constructing unexpected structures and will thus transform and defamiliarise well known sites. In this unique way the artists will try to show how architecture and urban planning limit the space in which they live. Their actions will not make permanent changes in the city, they are temporary, transient. They wish to be remembered by the audience and help them see the city with different eyes. A vital element of the project is the cooperation between dancers involved in various types of dance and movement and representing different levels of experience. The performers include dancers from the Kiev group Black/Orange and dancers-volunteers from Poland.

7 H.Wieniawski Lublin Philharmonic Hall, ul. Skłodowskiej 5 19:00-20:30

Lutosławski’s Paganini Variations for Piano and Orchestra , A.Borodin’s Polovtsian Dances from “Prince Igor”

8 Musical Theatre, ul. Skłodowskiej 5 18:00-18:40

Carmen Suite, ballet Music: Rodion Shchedrin, based on G. Bizet; performed by ballet artists from Lviv Theatre of Opera and Ballet with Musical Theatre Orchestra This unique project is a cooperation between Ukrainian dancers from Lviv Theatre of Opera and Ballet with Musical Theatre in Lublin. It will provide a platform for the exchange of experiences and for comparing the quality of performance as well as styles and workshops. Dance is one of those areas which lie between art and sports. This is why the value of this event lies in the presentation of the perfection and harmony of human body in itself, expressed through one of the most beautiful ballets ever written, Carmen Suite, interpreted by Rodion Shchedrin. The spectacle will present the results of hard work towards self-improvement expressed in airiness, lightness, suggestiveness of movement and in gesture communication. Even though the piece itself was written years after Bizet’s Carmen, it was successfully incorporated into the opera, enrichening it with choreography, which expands the commentary on the fate of the protagonists.

20:00

“Best of Dance” ”Es” Dance Theatre and “Fatum” Ballet Group. A review of dance performances, which gained 21

awards in regional and national competitions (including contemporary dance, ballet dance and character dance , performed by “Czechów” District Community Centre.

23:00-23:40

The Best of Musical Theatre A spectacle presenting all artistic formations practiced in the Musical Theatre.

9 Alternative Music Stage, square at

the junction of Al. Racławickie and ul. Radziszewskiego 21:00-4:30

Night of Cult Performing: LEHU Live Act (HCC SC/Kielce), Rekin (Holera FS/Lublin), r33lc4sh (Redekonstrukcje Sound System/Lublin), desper Acid Live Act (Redekonstrukcje Sound system/Lublin) The green forested square between Teatr w Budowie (The Theatre Under Construction), Radziszewskiego Street, the Unia-Mercury Hotel and Al.Racławickie will host heavy electronic music. The name Alternative Music Stage is not accidental – such sounds will not be heard in other venues of Night of Culture. The event will likely draw the attention of fans of club music such as dubstep, dub, dark techno, tribal or acid. Dj’s from Lublin, known to the public from parties in Opium Club, Tektura or the now defunct Centrala Club , will be joined by LEHU from Kielce. Artists will be playing throughout the night, playing at the decks, on their own or in the back-to-back style (a dialogue between two DJs performing simultaneously, sometimes doing sound battles, sometimes exchanging sounds). The square will be specially adapted to the needs of the event, using stage lighting and visualizations as a way of referring to ancient Slavic symbolism.

Lublin – Gate to the East | Night of Culture 2012

21:00-2:00

“Night of Personal Culture-Etiquette”, performative action – IvenTektura This project asks whether or not personal culture is needed and useful for everyday life, or is it perhaps just a nuisance? Who and what shapes these behaviours? What is the form of this culture nowadays, what do we learn at home? What do we learn at school? What do the media teach us?

22:00-3:00

“Upside Down”, a video installation by Mychaylo Barabash. Humans are thinking creatures and yet all the time they seem to do things not as they should, the other way round; they approach things as if from the wrong angle. Their actions do not always yield the desired results, it all seems to lead to destruction rather than development…

20:30-21:30

Lublin Dance Theatre – Bodies Painting Cityscapes A performative project created in cooperation with Willi Dorner (Austria), which uses dance and motion (or lack of thereof) to interfere in the physical layout of the city and its buildings. include dancers from the Kiev group Black/Orange and dancers-volunteers from Poland.

19:00-5:00

Green Light – installation by Katarzyna Szczypior A temporary installation in city space. An unusual green form stands out in the everyday grey asphalt cityscape. Through this vegetal interference the artist wants to draw our attention to the problem of green areas vanishing from cities, particularly from their centres.

of the band refers to a village in Ukraine which up until 1980s had a mental hospital, where those who dared have different outlook and beliefs than those prescribed by communist regime were put to undertake forced therapy. The band masterfully combines various genres (folk, punk, ska and reggae) into one audacious collage which echoes the yearnings and traditions of the Hutsuls and the vastness of mountain ranges. Lub Reggae Stage will close with Dub RaphaEL the first Polish project to adapt looping technique for reggae and dub music. They are one of the key sound systems in Poland. The activity and live gigs of Banda Arkan Sound System prove that Hutsul music, modernized and performed using electronic instruments, can be very refreshing. Their music is lively and upbeat and combines past with the present. If the Hutsuls would wish to take their music down from the mountains to the cities, Banda Arkan Sound System has already paved the way. Roots Defender from Lublin is a collective founded by enthusiasts of vinyl sounds, bass culture and the pioneers of music originating from and reaching for reggae. 25

“Gloria”, a spectacle by Voskresinnia Theatre (Lviv) Voskresinnia Theatre was founded in 1990, following a wave of social transformations after Ukraine regained independence. Young actors from various cities across the country took up cooperation with Yaroslav Fedoryshyn, a graduate from the faculty of drama at the University of Kharkov and the Russian Academy of Theatre Arts in Moscow (GITIS). Step by step, by combining traditional acting styles based on psychological insight with the modern visual form, the group has elaborated a specific stage formula of its own. In time, it began to specialise in open air spectacles. “Gloria” directed by Yaroslav Fedoryshyn refers to the aesthetics of Ukrainian folklore. It tells about rituals and customs which have been accompanying man from time immemorial, placing special emphasis on the meaning and function of fire. In the accompaniment of music played live the actors will become a wedding procession, a group of merry dancers and magicians only to suddenly transform into knights of the Apocalypse.

and lots of fun. Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s dream is well known – but not necessarily in the way class 1d has envisioned it. You have to see it! The Lives of the Project-Housing Saints is a surreal short story filled with absurd humour about untypical Saints – the concrete Golden Legend passed from mouth to mouth in front of “Jericho” liquor store. Unique play with words and conventionscan you get a text message from God, after all? The spectacle was awarded Złota Maska (Golden Mask) Award at the “Maska 2012” Festival in Chełm..

Clytemnestra, a theatrical essay by Teatr Gravite Teatr Gravite is a theatre group closely connected with Cultural Centre in Łęczna. It is located near to Gardzienice and its Centre of Theatre Practices, and so they take inspiration and knowledge about the 34

theatre from them. Clytemnestra is the second part of a triptych dedicated to the heroes of the mythical Trojan war. The spectacle is based on tragedies by Euripdes and Aeschylus as well as their own observations and reflections.

21:15-22:00

Monodrama, 6 Lekcji - 6 Lessons by Przemysław Gąsiorowicz “6 lessons, or histrionics for the broken” is a completely original one-man show by an actor of J.Osterwa Theatre, which will have its premiere during Night of Culture. Dear Visitor! If you think you know something about theatre, or about cabaret- rest assured! You know nothing! 6 Lessons will make you aware of it. Suffice it to say that this spectacle is…mental. The corridor, measuring 3 metres high and 9 metres long, invites you to contemplate nature, to dive into an oasis of green within the concrete jungle of the city. The interior of the installation is filled with photos of trees, where the only difference between them is that some of them were taken on the Ukraine side of the border and others- on its Polish side. Seemingly, the forest is only one, seemingly nothing divides it. And yet, 36

historically and politically it becomes split into two different parts, two different worlds.

However, it will be anything but a colourful, carnival costume. Its shape and image will be transformed using typical Ukrainian plastic bags. These bags are a symbol, albeit not a very optimistic one, of Polish and Ukrainians confrontations at bazaars ,street markets and border crossings. Even though from the 1990s onwards our mutual contacts and our realities have been undergoing gradual transformations, bags of these kind, packed with goods are still an important element of our common reality.

Joseph&Co, a spectacle based on prose works by B. Schulz –“Alter” Theatre (Drohobych) The theatre project Joseph&Co is a stage in the production of a bilingual Polish-Ukrainian spectacle by “Alter” theatre. It is based on short stories by Bruno Schulz, whose literary output is a testament to the co-existence of Ukrainian, Polish and Jewish cultures. The spectacle is performed by inhabitants of Drohobych, who are inspired not only by the writings of Schulz, but also the atmosphere of the city itself.

21:30

“W gorącej wodzie kąpani” – a show We enact improvised spectacles, mostly long-form and of our own penmanship. We believe that aside from the abstract, watchful viewers will see themselves, or at least their neighbours in our antics. Looking at neighbours when they do not know you are looking may lead to some interesting observations. We derive from the off-theatre “Wybrzeżak” which during its existence very generously bestowed spectacles upon the inhabitants of the tricity area (Gdansk, Gdynia, Sopot). In that theatre, together with some visiting Americans we would improvise, in those distant beginnings of 21st century, when Warsaw was still Warsaw. We pine for theatre and this yearning shows in our eyes and our catlike movements.

“Forest Song” (parts1, 2 and 3), spectacle - Les Kurbas Theatre from Lviv Les Kurbas Theatre was founded in 1988 by a group of young actors, working under the direction of Vladimir Kuchinsky and from the very beginning has been offering a blend of unique repertoire and interesting aesthetics. It has gained critical acclaim in Ukraine and outside, which can be seen, for instance, in their international 40

cooperation with, among others, Gardzienice Centre for Theatre practices, Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski and Thomas Richards and the Saratoga Civic Centre Theatre in the USA. In 2006 the Theatre was awarded the highest recognition for work in culture – T.Shevchenko National Award, in 2007 it was elevated to the status of academic theatre. The spectacle Forest Song is a result of the theatre’s cooperation with the director Andrij Prihodko from Kiev. Music arrangements are the work of Marianna Sadovska who collaborated with Gardzienice for many years. Forest Song is based on a play by Lesya Ukrainia under the same title which, in turn, was based on folk tales about fantastic creatures dwelling in Ukrainian forests. The spectacle competently combines contemporary theatre aesthetics with themes taken from Ukrainian folklore.

Ifigenia w T... – Iphigenia In T, spectacleGardzienice Theatre (Cloisters in the Dominican monastery) Gardzienice Centre for Theatre Practices was established in 1977 by Włodzimierz Staniewski. It is one of the best known and most critically acclaimed Polish theatres. Described as an anthropological experimental theatre, Gardzienice CTP take inspiration from ancient culture, in recent years specifically ancient Greece They emphasize the coexistence of the musical and the visual and are known for their research on native and ancient music traditions. Employing the results of their studies for spectacles is one of their most distinctive features. The spectacle Iphigenia in T, directed by Włodzimierz Staniewski tells the story of Iphigenia, a charismatic girl who was miraculously saved from being murdered by her father, Agamemnon. Lost to “her” people, she is

It is a space of meeting with artists and creators of Night of Culture, a space which combines the functions of a music club and a cosy place of repose, and serving Ukrainian food to its guests. Night of Culture in the Club will open with French Song Concert performed by Jean-Claude Meurisse, an acclaimed French author, composer and performer, first discovered during the festival “Printemps de Bourges” for his vivacity, sense of humour, beautiful compositions and interesting texts. The music performed by the band Miąższ is full of energy, emotion and spontaneity and their work resist definition. Dychka, as the band tell us, “ play a restless dance music”, employing both acoustic and electronic sounds. The duet Zapaska represents Ukrainian indie-pop and does not hesitate to reach for genres as varied as hip hop or Bollywood music. Three different individuals with different education, age, experience and coming from different backgrounds set up the band Mis’ko & Rayan and their music, as they themselves claim, can be surprising. A project which has been especially formed for Night of Culture is the band of Jan Czapla (responsible for the project’s musical setting, which stands on the border between ambient and drone jazz) and Grupa Robimy, who will provide visualizations, charmingly called “Stick battles”. The performance of the duet MavByDavBy, who combines genres such as indie-folk, electro-acoustic and minimal, will initiate their first ever Poland-wide tour. Hycz Orkiestra will remind us about forgotten (or perhaps entirely unknown) poets. Night of Culture in our Club will be come to a close with the dj duet Papa Zura. 41

They will open the ethno&folk scene of Night of Culture and we will certainly have a chance to hear the unofficial anthem of Euro 2012 – “Koko Euro Spoko”. Young Djembe is a band which combines African, Asian and Cuban rhythms, employing a variety of drums and percussion instruments. Miatlica in Belarusian means “grass growing on a clearing”. The name is not accidental, the sounds of nature are one of the major sources of inspiration for this 42

young folk band. Chvyla performs Ukrainian songs from a variety of regions, especially Podlasie, Polesia and Lemkivshchyna. Black Velvet Band is renowned for their ability to play polka in the style of metal, metal in the style of folk and for combining punk rock with violin music. Music of the Carpathian mountains has become a major source of inspiration for the band Burdon, but their musical interests go further, spreading from the Balkans to Scandinavia. Saint Nicholas Orchestra from Lublin is one of the best known Polish folk bands. A distinguishing characteristic of the ensemble is its acoustically-oriented sound and the use of vocal mannerisms, such as the so-called “white voice” singing style. In its musical arrangements, the group employs a variety of traditional instruments. It is this broad musical palette which creates the very particular and utterly unique timbre so characteristic of the group’s sound aesthetic, contributing in turn towards the mystical aura of its music. Proti Nochi will perform a fire show to the music by the band Zira, who seek inspiration in the music of Ukraine, Slavic countries but also the Orient and the Balkans, while the neo-folk group Ludy Dobri from Lviv look for the most interesting examples of traditional Ukrainian music and give them new arrangements following their own eclectic stylistics.

The Plein-Air took place in July 2011 in Zamlynie Centre for Integration (Caritas of the Lutsk Diocese), a village located on the border with Poland, south of the Dorohusk/Jahodyn border crossing, which is the home to a spiritual and intellectual centre of Polish-Ukrainian dialogue supervised by a Roman Catholic priest- Jan Buras. The aim of the Volhynia Plein-Air is to attempt to implement in Ukraine the model of Polish-Ukrainian artistic cooperation which was tested earlier in Nowica, to facilitate conducting a spiritual dialogue among artists indentifying with both Western and Eastern Church practices. Exhibition of paintings by Volodymyr Marchuk The artist was born in 1953 in Ukraine, in a village in the Volhynia oblast. Between 1975-1980 he studied in the Lviv Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts(currently known as the Academy of Fine Arts). Among Volodymyr’s works we will find examples of various painting techniques, decorative compositions or abstract landscapes. Sacral paintings, not infrequently relating directly to Eastern and Western iconography contain abstract, philosophical symbolism.

Lublin – Gate to the East | Night of Culture 2012

Night of Culture Volunteers An event as large as this would not have been possible without the support of our volunteers. Many years of experience with working with young people has shown how many benefits it offers to both sides. For volunteers, it provides an opportunity to gain experience, take on challenging events but also to meet interesting people: artists, entrepreneurs, people working in culture. For the organizers, the support of volunteers helps to assure a smoother and more efficient implementation of the event and helps to make better contact with

the participants of Night of Culture - both audience and artists. That the Night of Culture Volunteer Programme has been immensely successful is shown in the fact that this year, for the first time ever, we received over 100 applications. We are very proud that we have the opportunity to work with them and we would like to thank them in advance for their trust and involvement. We hope that helping with Night of Culture will offer our volunteers a chance to not only gain experience but also to have a great time.
