Agriculture Sitting squarely in the heart of some of the nation’s richest farmland, agriculture is an integral part of life in Waseca County. Out of a total of 10,312 jobs, farm employment accounted for 852 jobs, according to the most recent Minnesota Department of Agriculture numbers. Corn, grain, soybeans, vegetables, forage and sweet corn are the county’s top crop items. Waseca County’s roots in agriculture are traced to immigrants, who, in the 1860s homesteaded 160-acre farms as land grants or for less than $1 an acre. When the Winona and St. Peter Railroad was laid, the city was platted, establishing Waseca as a marketplace for the farmer’s crops.
The tradition continues today with dairy producers, hog farmers, corn and soybean growers leading the way in productivity and stewardship of the land. Waseca is the home of the University of Minnesota’s Southern Research and Outreach Center; AURI, a leading agricultural research institution and Farmamerica, the state’s agricultural interpretive center. Related industries manufacture grain dryers, farm machinery and parts for manufacturers. A major supplier of wholesale horticultural plants, a leading frozen vegetable producer and a manufacturer of specialty dairy food ingredients are Waseca-based.

Gateway to the Lakes There are 50 lakes within a half-hour drive of Waseca, including Lake Elysian near Janesville, Reeds Lake west of Waseca, St. Olaf Lake outside of New Richland, and Tetonka and Sakatah lakes in Waterville. Waseca’s prized lakes welcome visitors at both the east and west ends of town and offer ample opportunity for water sports, fishing, picnics or a quiet walk. Clear Lake, the large 652-acre lake on the east entrance to Waseca, is the place to go for fishing, boating, water skiing, sailing, snowmobiling and ice fishing. One of Clear Lake’s highlights is bike trail loved by walkers, joggers and bikers looking for fresh air and exercise. The trail hugs the lake’s shoreline before connecting to trails within the city. The lake is filled with walleye, northern pike, sunfish, perch and large mouth bass. In the winter, Clear Lake is home to dozens of ice fishing houses and snowmobile activities including the Waseca County Historical Society’s ice harvest and the Kruger Memorial snowmobile races each February.
On the west side of town is Loon Lake, a quiet 80-acre lake with a picturesque and historic island. Loon Lake offers a perfect place to fish, canoe, watch wildlife or to picnic in the tree-filled park equipped with tables, playground equipment and a 2.2mile walking path. Fish for bluegills, crappies, bass, northern pike and bullheads at Loon Lake, an “electric boat motors only” lake. A boat ramp is located on 10th St. NW and a fishing pier is within walking distance. Shoreline restoration projects have added native wildflowers and improved water quality and stabilized the shoreline of both lakes. Across southern Minnesota, lakes provide recreation in all seasons, with bait shops, hotels, resorts and campgrounds available for supplies and overnight stays.

Parks, Trails and Outdoor Recreation Waseca County’s parks and trails provide leisure and recreational activities for all ages — from small neighborhood parks where Community Education activities are offered in the summer to the 24-acre Northeast Park, site of the Waseca Water Park. On the east side of Waseca, on beautiful Clear Lake, is Maplewood Park, one of the last remnants of the big woods that once covered southern Minnesota. Take the road to the top of the hill to enjoy paths that wind through the woods, discover native wildflowers and appreciate the quiet beauty of Maplewood, a true Waseca treasure. Once the location of private cabins and a stately hotel, Maplewood is now public property.
Waseca parks include: • Clear Lake Bike and Walking Trail, 4.64 miles around the lake and through the city, a safe place to walk, jog, rollerblade and bike • Clear Lake Park, 12.5 acres with sand volleyball courts, tennis courts, horseshoe pits, basketball hoops, playground equipment, beach, picnic shelter, grills and band shell. LakeFest is celebrated in the park each Fourth of July.

Arts & Entertainment The Waseca Arts Council offers a variety of programs for children and adults, including Art on Wednesday. Each week the center hosts open studio time and a discussion on art appreciation for adults. The arts flourish in Waseca. The recently renovated Waseca Art Center has been in its current location — in a historic building on the corner of North State Street and Second Avenue NE in downtown — since early 2013.

Waseca County Sleigh & Cutter The historic Waseca Sleigh & Cutter Festival is a great reason to celebrate the cold! It’s an event that goes back to 1950 — the Waseca Sleigh & Cutter Festival started as the vision of a group of guys gathered in a local barber shop. The one-of-a-kind parade of horses and sleighs, set in 2016 for Saturday, Feb. 13, became Waseca’s claim to fame. This year’s festival runs from Jan. 29 to Feb. 28, though on March 26 the 12th annual Sleigh & Cutter Children’s Dream Catcher fundraiser takes place. The annual event continues to grow to include hundreds of residents of all ages who enjoy a variety of games and winter activities. The festival still includes a unique parade of spectacular horses and sleigh and cutter entries from across the state with added entertainment by the Jesse James Gang re-enactors and the Cannon Old West Society. Miss Waseca County Sleigh & Cutter reigns over the festivities, including a dinner and dance. There are two communitywide contests with significant purses for the winners — the medallion hunt and Frosty the Snowman, in which contestants decipher weekly clues to either find the hidden medallion or determine Frosty’s 20 Guide To Waseca and the Surrounding Area

Farmamerica Ever wonder how your food gets from the seed to your table? Or how agriculture evolved from subsistence to commodity farming? Farmamerica— Minnesota’s Agricultural Interpretive Center — is the place to go to experience what agriculture was like in 1850, 1930 and today. Farmamerica was commissioned in 1978 to tell the story of agriculture in Minnesota, past and present. The center is open from May through October. Activities follow the natural rhythm of the growing season. Weekends have special themes that follow the cropping cycle. And sometimes there’s a bit of fun, like a tractor show or the popular haunted corn maze. In 2000, a new Visitor Center was dedicated to provide an entrance to the 1-mile Time Lane Trail and annual celebrations. It is also the site of offices, conference and reception space that can accommodate up to 260, a gift shop and observation tour. Located west of Waseca on 120 acres of farmland at 7367 360th Ave., Farmamerica includes and 1850s homestead, a oneroom school house, a country church, a blacksmith shop and town hall. The 1930s

Hay Daze is capped off by a parade through Janesville on Sunday afternoon. A town of strong traditions, Janesville celebrated its sesquicentennial in 2006. Community members put their best feet forward to perform for the hometown crowd in the annual Hee Haw show. Janesville has also been the site of the Pink Ribbon Ride, a motorcycle ride to raise funds for the Susan G. Komen Minnesota Breast Cancer Foundation. The event includes a 100-mile ride and has welcomed well over 120 riders. New Richland Just 13 miles south of Waseca at the crossroads of Hwy. 13 and Hwy. 30, the city of New Richland is home to 1,203 residents. The community’s roots can be found in the Norwegian settlers who settled the rich farmland around St. Olaf Lake and the Le Sueur River and the arrival of the Minneapolis & St. Louis Railroad in 1877. Churches were built, businesses were established and the village, which was formed in 1858, grew. New Richland is also proud of its community spirit, the Riverview Golf Course, the bike trail from New Richland to St. Olaf Lake and Park, the New Richland Care Center, Country Neighbors and City Park. Each July, New Richland celebrates its past and future with Farm & City Days, which includes something for everyone
