agriculture Waseca County sits squarely in the heart of some of the nation’s richest farmland, making agriculture is an integral part of life. Of a total of 10,312 jobs, farm employment accounted for 852, according to the most recent Minnesota Department of Agriculture numbers. In 2013 agricultural rankings, the county was 25th in livestock production, eighth in
hogs, 33rd in crop production and 26th in total agricultural production, according to the Department of Agriculture. Corn, grain, soybeans, vegetables, forage and sweet corn are the county’s top crop items. Waseca County’s roots in agriculture are traced to immigrants, who, in the 1860s homesteaded 160-acre farms as land grants or for less than $1 an acre. When the Winona and St. Peter Railroad was laid, the city was platted, establishing Waseca as a marketplace for the farmer’s crops. Waseca is the home of the University of Minnesota’s Southern Research and Outreach Center; AURI, a leading agricultural research institution and Farmamerica, the state’s agricultural interpretive center.

Farmamerica was commissioned in 1978 to tell the story of agriculture in Minnesota, past and present. The center is open from May through October. Activities follow the natural rhythm of the growing season. Weekends have special themes that follow the cropping cycle. lakes Waseca’s prized lakes welcome visitors at both the east and west ends of town and offer ample opportunity for water sports, fishing, picnics or a quiet walk. Clear Lake, the large 652-acre lake on the east entrance to Waseca, is the place to go for fishing, boating, water skiing, sailing, snowmobiling and ice fishing. One of Clear Lake’s highlights is bike trail loved by walkers, joggers and bikers looking for fresh air and exercise. The trail hugs the lake’s shoreline before connecting to trails within the city. The lake is filled with walleye, northern pike, sunfish, perch and large mouth bass. In the winter, Clear Lake is home to dozens of ice fishing houses and snowmobile activities including the Kruger Memorial snowmobile races each February.

Fish for bluegills, crappies, bass, northern pike and bullheads on Loon Lake, an “electric motor boat only” lake. A boat ramp is located on 10th St. NW and a fishing pier is within walking distance. Shoreline restoration projects have added native wildflowers and improved water quality and stabilized the shoreline of both lakes. Additionally, there are 50 lakes within a half-hour drive: Lake Elysian near Janesville, Reeds Lake west of Waseca, St. Olaf Lake outside of New Richland, and Tetonka and Sakatah lakes in Waterville.

waseca county history center Waseca County History Center is the place for residents and visitors alike to come together and be amazed by Waseca County’s unique history. A project in the works for several years was completed in October 2015, the “Timeline of Unique Stories from Waseca County,” a balcony-wide permanent exhibit of decade by decade historical images and statements, and 19 uniquely designed display cases, each telling one unique story. Waseca County is learning about itself, so are the visitors who are intrigued by the unexpected, the compelling, the tragic, and the familiar events, places and people. The Waseca County History Center also has a top-notch genealogical research library, one of only three in the state that is a non-church research site of the Church of the Latter Day Saints and all their genealogical resources.
The museum exhibits are free. A Waseca
County Historical Society membership gives you free research library use (copies extra) and a password to search online. The continuous work of the staff and volunteers is to receive, process and index artifacts, papers, records, archives, newspapers and more; and to make this volume of information available online. The Waseca County Historical Society is the steward of county, city, and township records; family histories, business and organizations’ histories, schools and individuals. We can only save what we are given. Its searchable website grows continuously. Schools and libraries have free access. festivals Lakefest
In Waseca, the Fourth of July means Lakefest, a community celebration at beautiful Clear Lake Park. Lakefest is a family day, for celebrating our nation’s birthday along with the joys of small town life where neighbors come to the park for food, music, games and crafts, a boat parade and paddle fest. The day starts with the Lakefest Freedom Run at Clear Lake Park. At noon, the park comes alive with food vendors setting up their wagons and musicians tuning their instruments and voices to begin day-long entertainment in the bandstand. Bring blankets and lawn chairs, strollers and sun hats. Enjoy tennis and sand volleyball or watch your kids explore the park’s playground equipment and sandy beach. End a perfect all-American day with friends and family by watching fireworks over the lake at dusk. Other Waseca celebrations include:
St. Patrick’s Day Celebration
Irish-American Club of Southern Minnesota March Mass with an Irish theme, Mulligan Stew, the Parade of Clans, Irish Rally and crowning of Miss St. Patrick and Miss Irish Rose, Little Miss Shamrock and Little Leprechaun. In 2017, the Irish will celebrate in Janesville. Find the Irish America Club of Southern Minnesota on Facebook. 26 | DISCOVER WASECA 2017

sleigh & cutter sleigh & cutter festival
Jan. 27 to Feb. 26 and March 25 Waseca Visit www.sleighandcutterfestival.org for a complete schedule and more information. The historic Waseca Sleigh & Cutter Festival is a great reason to celebrate winter in Minnesota. It’s an event that goes back to 1950 — the Waseca Sleigh & Cutter Festival started as the vision of a group of guys gathered in a local barber shop. The one-of-a-kind pa-
rade of horses and sleighs, set in 2016 for Saturday, Feb. 11, became Waseca’s claim to fame. This year’s festival runs from Jan. 27 to Feb. 26. The bingo event is March 25. The annual event continues to grow to include hundreds of residents of all ages who enjoy a variety of games and winter activities. The festival still includes a unique parade of spectacular horses and sleigh and cutter entries from across the state with added entertainment by the Jesse James Gang re-enactors and the Cannon Old West Society. Miss Waseca County Sleigh & Cutter Allyson Helms reigns over the festivities, which includes a dinner and dance.

janesville Ten miles west of Waseca on Old Hwy. 14 is the community of Janesville, home to 2,256 residents. Janesville was platted in 1869 for the general manager of Winona & St. Peter railroad. In the winter of 186970 buildings were moved to the new town and in the spring of 1870, the new town was established. weekend festival which takes place each June. Streets close during Hay Daze, and music and carnival rides fill the streets in celebration. Hay Daze is capped off by a parade through Janesville on Sunday afternoon. Community members put their best feet forward to perform for the hometown crowd in the annual Hee Haw show. Janesville has also been the site of the Pink Ribbon Ride, a motorcycle ride to raise funds for the Susan G. Komen Minnesota Breast Cancer Foundation. The event includes a 100-mile ride and has welcomed well over 120 riders.
Janesville’s Public Library, built in 1912, is one of nearly 1,700 across the nation built with money donated by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. According to the Waseca County Historical Society, Janesvillians made the required commitment of $500 per year to maintain a library, while Carnegie put forward $5,000. The library was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. Local lakes and parks, campgrounds, a swimming pool and a summer recreation program for kids make Janesville a relaxing place to live or visit.
