Owatonna is a great city and one that we hope will make you feel welcome. With a variety of parks and trails for you to enjoy, either picnicking or walking simply for exercise, be sure to take time to enjoy our community. While you are out, stop at our distinctive stores of downtown, including Costa’s Candies & Restaurant and their famous homemade treats. We are home to Cabela’s, so don’t miss the chance to see all their unique displays and find something to take home. Owatonna was also the site of an orphanage for kids, which later became a State School and now houses our City Offices. The orphanage has been restored and provides families with a wonderful experience to learn the history. Furthermore, the Village of Yesteryear provides a look into the past, located on the south end of town by the Steele County Fair Grounds. We hope that you enjoy your time in Owatonna and are able to see some of sites.

In 1962, with the arrival of the SACO Church, the Village of Yesteryear was born. Now with 19 structures, the latest acquisition being the Standard Oil Carriage House, the Village has become a landmark in the county and a historic treasure with visitors from all over. Their new facility has brought an impressive line-up of events, including their Americana Showcase series. Blooming Prairie Events July old fashioned 3&4 Fourth of july
Paint the Town Pink & Cancer Auction
Sept. 9&10
Once merely a vision, the annual Paint the Town Pink and Cancer Auction held in Blooming Prairie is now a community event that brings help, hope and awareness. A field of 250 pink flags will be displayed that can be seen by residents, visitors and those just passing through, a tradition that kicks off painting the town pink. The display honors and remembers those who have battled cancer. This incredibly charitable event has turned into a weekend extravaganza, starting on Friday in the big top tent set up near the always flavorful Pizza Cellar. Wearing pink shirts in support of cancer research, volunteers will paint ribbons on the street to guide participants of the Memorial Walk/Run that will begin and end at the field of flags Saturday morning. On the edge of the flags there will be haircuts, back massages, face painting and games for kids to raise additional funds for the cause. Bingo fanatics will gather in the tent for family bingo, while Stix of Fury provides entertainment followed by a second live auction. Individuals can participate in Paint Blooming Prairie Pink by reserving a flag for $10. Call Cheri Krejci at (507) 438-6895 to reserve yours today.

Arts & Entertainment Owatonna Arts Center “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.” — Edgar Degas From 1886 until 1945, the site that now houses the administrative center for the City of Owatonna and other non-profit organizations was once the Minnesota State Public School for Dependent and Neglected Children. The orphanage was phased out in 1945 and renamed the Owatonna State School. Then in 1974, two women who believed in the importance of art and saw a need for a community arts organization founded the Owatonna Arts Center (OAC). Mary Leach, Marianne Young and the first OAC board came together to reestablish this historic site that had just been sitting empty. Exposure to art adds value and richness to the community in a way that is full and meaningful. The Owatonna Arts Center is a testament to those who see the significance of art and culture and having a facility that represents both. Like the Owatonna Arts Center on Facebook, and stay up to date on exclusive events at http://oacarts.org. Looking for a unique addition to your next birthday party or company event? Consider Colorwheels—a unique, traveling art experience for all age groups and skill levels. Inspiring and triggering the artist inside all of us, Colorwheels will provide supplies and instruction. LOCAL ARTIST HIGHLIGHT Mike Pliner and Mary Maggio
Mike and Mary, husband and wife, are what one would call “outside artists.” Breaking away from the mainstream, these artists do not follow trends or stay within boundaries of the art scene. Usually self-taught and often undiscovered, art created by these individuals is anything but institutionalized. Mike became interested in wood carving after his father started carving about twenty years ago. He began with the traditional animal carvings in the fashion of his dad. After wandering through the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, Mike decided to make three-dimensional versions and moved to relief carvings. In the future, Mike looks forward to developing his craft with true scale furniture adding, “If I can come up with a twist that is intriguing.”
Mary’s grandparents were born in Camporeale, Sicily. Her affinity for Sicily is in her blood. She set foot on the soil for the first time in 1975 and most recently in 2014 with several trips in between. Mary remarks, “What do you do on a beautiful island? Walk the streets and beaches. Eat simply. Take photos.” After hours and days of wandering in Palermo, Mary kept seeing chairs—worn chairs, lonely chairs, chairs with partners, unusable chairs, dead chairs, chairs in impossible places and chairs that escaped. Even chairs that were, indeed, utilitarian. When she asked her Sicilian cousin why there were so many chairs in the streets, on sidewalks, in the trees and on rooftops he said, “What chairs?” Mary’s exhibition display shows just a fraction of the Sicilian chairs she took captive in her camera.

Little Theatre of Owatonna “I think there is no world without theatre.” — Edward Bond A community theatre exposes the next generation of audiences and future actors, playwrights, directors and even the critics to new ideas and inspiration. Founded in 1966, the purpose behind a local theatre was to bring culture and entertainment to Owatonna and encourage those interested to participate. Producing over 181 plays, the Little Theatre of Owatonna is wrapping up their 50th anniversary season. Productions are presented each season with a holiday production every other year. Sharon Stark has been with the Little Theatre of Owatonna since day one, sharing her passion for theatre with the community: “We are a great asset to the community. Several people have chosen to live in Owatonna because we have a successful community theatre. I’ve been friends with some people for 45 years that I met through the theatre.” Join the Little Theatre of Owatonna as they finish celebrating this milestone year with “Grease.” Directed by Craig Berg, performances of Grease will be held on July 7-9 and 14-16 at 7:30 p.m. and on July 10 and 17 at 2 p.m.

Harry Wenger Marching Band Festival Saturday, June 18 • 11 a.m.
This summer marks the 7th Annual Harry Wenger Marching Band Festival, an event that honors businessman and recognized teacher, Harry Wenger. Known as the “Music Man,” Wenger directed the high school band and brought enthusiasm to the music programs. As many musicians know, not having the proper equipment can make even the most skilled individual struggle. Wenger began designing equipment and bringing his ideas to life in 1946, and by 1964, he celebrated a million-dollar year with over 40 products in the Wenger catalog. Wenger passed away in 1992, but his legacy lives on through booming instruments,
percussions and drum majors that fill the streets of downtown Owatonna. The festival is exclusive to marching bands and this year will be comprised of the following: 728 Cadets, Dover-Eyota, Faribault Crusaders, Henry Sibley, KMS, Lake City, Mankato 77 Lancers, Maple Grove, Milaca, NRHEG, Waconia and Winona Cotter. Owatonna will perform as an exhibition band. Visit www.owatonnabandfestival.com for more information leading up to the Harry Wenger Marching Band Festival.
11@7 Concert Series
7 p.m. each Thursday from June 2 through August 11 With summer comes bonfires and beaches, but it also brings outdoor entertainment to Central Park in Owatonna. Bring your chair, kick back and indulge in audible sweetness. Live music is an experience that ear buds just cannot match. Jerry Besser, owner of Tone Music, has a passion for sharing his love for music with the community. As the organizer of the 11@7 Concert Series, Jerry expanded the series to eleven weeks after the Central Park stage was built as part of the 2004 Sesquicentennial project. Jerry shared why he volunteers his time to organize this popular concert series: “It’s my service to the community. My goal is to have a good variety of musicians. A handful of people approached me last year to thank me for bringing Billy McLaughlin to town.” Beginning at 7 p.m. each Thursday from June 2 through August 11, bands will come to perform on the Central Park Stage. In the event of inclement weather, Trinity Lutheran Church has graciously offered their fellowship hall to host any concerts that are rained out. 22 | explore steele county | spring/summer 2016

This is a first-class bowling center providing the latest in entertainment. Virtual games added to the lanes and sleek seating makes it a comfortable and clean place to bowl. Volleyball is held outside in the sand courts specifically built for the occasion in the summer and both a laser tag area and game zone put the place over the top. Schedule a party, meet up with friends or revel in the bar with supreme drinks and food prepared by Chef Gar.
The Farmer’s Market has left a mark on Central Park for decades. With vendors like “the cheese lady” and items ranging from soaps and oatmeal cream pies to pure maple syrup and wood carvings, it is a Saturday morning go-to. Vendors need to be from Steele County and the products they sell have to be handmade or homegrown. Other than that, the farmer’s market is free.

Right outside of Ellendale is a 94-acre lake, complete with a swimming beach, park area and play equipment. The beach has become a summer hot spot for Steele County residents who are looking for a quiet and clean spot to fool around with the boat docks, fishing pier, horseshoe pits and volleyball courts. Hiking trails run through the backwoods, while a tunnel conveniently takes visitors back to their vehicles when the day is over.
If you’re looking for a concrete swimming pool to cool off during the hot summer months, Pine Springs Pool is not the place. It’s better. The man-made pool has a sand bottom and is fed from the natural spring located beneath the city block on which it sits. Those natural spring waters are treated with chlorine to make certain that algae and bacteria do not grow and to ensure that the pool is safe for swimming. A picnic area with a gazebo has also been added to make the pool more welcoming. There are also sandboxes near the first section for children to play in.
Be part of an organization that helps kids reach their full potential. The Boys & Girls Club of Blooming Prairie offers after school and all-day summer programming to help youth achieve and reach their full potential by becoming a compassionate and dynamic member of the community. The club’s activities center around education and career development, character and leadership, health, life skills and the arts as well as sports, fitness and recreation.

THE KANNE FAMILY
mEET sTEELE cOUNTY fARMERS
Medford
Spanning over 130 years, the Kanne family farm is a fourth generation operation. Comprised of Brian Kanne, his wife, Carolyn, and their two children, Deanne and Michael, the family raises corn and soybeans along with a few 4-h goats. Brian grew up milking Holsteins, and since then, there have been sheep, beef cattle and pigs in the mix. But today, the goats have sole possession over the barn. As a person who enjoys seeing new life begin, Brian has been farming since he could walk. Whether it is crops sprouting from the soil, a newborn calf frolicking through the straw or a child experiencing all of their firsts, watching life take place is extraordinary.
THE KAsper FAMILY Owatonna
The Kasper Dairy Farm is owned and operated by Peter and Karen Kasper with their son, Tony. Pete and Karen’s daughter, Steph, along with Tony’s wife, Betsy, and their son, Milo, enjoy helping on the farm in their spare time. Peter and Karen began farming south of Owatonna in 1987. Committed to animal care, environmental stewardship, contributing to the economy and producing wholesome products for consumers, the Kaspers are the epitome of a steadfast farm family. The family enjoys teaching others about the dairy industry through school tours and presentations to various audiences including community/civic groups. Karen was named the 2016 Midwest Farm Mom of the Year and is also a published author with the goal of giving children exposure to real farm life. Connect with the Kaspers on Facebook at Facebook.com/KasperDairy and online at www.kasperdairy.blogspot.com.
THE Toquam FAMILY Blooming Prairie
The fifth generation farm located northeast of Blooming Prairie belongs to the Toquam Family. Roger, Rhonda and their three sons, Brennen, Josh and Isaiah grow corn, soybeans and peas for the local canning company. The majority of their corn is converted to ethanol at Al Corn, located in Claremont, as well as it being ground into feed at the Bixby Feed Mill. Their soybeans are grown as seed beans for a seed company, which are cleaned, bagged and sold to farmers the following year. In addition to their crops, they raise hogs for Holden Farms. According to their website, Roger’s ultimate purpose is to, like the generations before him, leave the family farm better than when he started farming it. The Toquam family is dedicated to the health of their hogs, the environment and takes pride in giving back to the community and creating jobs in the area. Connect with the Toquams on Facebook: www.facebook.com/Toquam-FamilyFarm and online at www.toquamfamilyfarm.com. #exploresteelecounty | 41

Horizons of Health Care As Steele County has grown, so has the need for quality health care for its residents and those in surrounding communities. Fortunately, the cooperation between the Owatonna Hospital,
part of Allina Health, and Mayo Clinic Health System in Owatonna has ensured quality health care in the community.
Owatonna Hospital The Owatonna Hospital’s new facility opened its doors in 2009, bringing a new patient care experience to Steele County. Owatonna Hospital has served the local community since 1901, when it was founded to serve a city of 5,000. Today, the hospital has grown to meet the needs of more than 26,000 Owatonna residents as well as the Steele County area. The current facility features 43 beds and employs more than 300. Owatonna Hospital offers inpatient and outpatient
orthopedic, general, urology, plastic, ENT and ophthalmologic surgical services; inpatient mental health; birthing center; emergency medicine; and rehabilitation services through Courage Kenny® Rehabilitation Institute. The Joint Commission accredits Owatonna Hospital. The two-story hospital, connected to Mayo Clinic Health System in Owatonna is located at 2250 NW 26th St.
Mayo Clinic Health System in Owatonna In 1948, two medical pioneers — Dr. Albert J. Olson and Dr. Franklin C. Anderson — started the Owatonna Clinic on the principle that the physician serves the community both in the preservation and the restoration of good health. For the past 60-plus years, the clinic has grown from its original office on Main Street to its current location on the 26th Street. In 1997, the clinic joined Mayo Clinic Health System. In 2011,

the Owatonna Clinic changed its name to Mayo Clinic Health System. The name change is part of a broader effort to bring even more of Mayo Clinic to patients locally. In addition to the clinic staff physicians, Mayo Clinic Outreach physician consultants come from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. Mayo also operates a facility at 405 E. Main in Blooming Prairie.
CATCH THE ACTION ! Aside from the Owatonna Hospital and Mayo Clinic Health System, there are many other health care providers in Steele County, which cater to specific needs.

Education The founders and settlers of Steele County brought with them certain cultural traditions that were as real and perhaps as important as the houses and stores they constructed. One of their first priorities was education. From the first public school classes conducted in a crude pole and branch-covered structure in the summer of 1855 to the wide variety of public and private educational facilities and resources available today, Steele County has a long history of offering the finest education to all ages. Steele County takes prides in its schools, the achievements of its students and the many opportunities its students have that help them be prepared for a successful career and to become a positive and contributing members of society.
Technical Academies of Minnesota
Opening in the fall of 2015 was the Technical Academies of Minnesota — public, tuition-free charter school for students in grades 7-12. The academy will employ licensed teachers and bring hands-on, project-based experiential learning to students. The project-based public charter school will focus on career and technical schools. Students will create projects based on their own interests. Students will make choices about how they complete state graduation requirements as a part of their projects. Some work will be done partially online while other experiences will be in the community, at a local business or on a college campus. The Owatonna site is the second of four sites for Technical Academies of Minnesota. The first site opened in 2014 in Wilmar. For more information, see the website at www.technicalacademies.org.

It’s time to Man Up Minnesota! “When I thought about becoming a Big, I really didn’t know what to expect. I remember asking myself a number of questions. Can I carve out enough time with my Little to make a difference? Will we enjoy the same things? Will we have fun together? Will he like me? Once I was matched with Brian, I quickly figured out I ask too many questions. Brian and I hit it off right away. Initially he was a little quiet and reesrved but it didn’t take long for that to change. BBBS did an excellent job with our match. We both love sports, movies and playing games. I very much look forward to our time we spend together. I feel I am having a positive impact on Brian, but I know for a fact he has impacted my life for the better.”
