One of the most popular TV shows of the ’80s makes a comeback when Fuller House, a reboot of Full House, premieres Feb. 26 on Netflix. Most of the original cast returns, including The View co-host Candace Cameron Bure, 39, who reprises her role as D.J., now a widow with three young sons. The Full House cast—Bob Saget, John Stamos, Dave Coulier, Lori Loughlin—has remained close for more than 20 years. To what do you attribute that? There wasn’t any one of us who was a jerk or had a big ego, so we genuinely got along. It’s amazing that it’s lasted, and I think we’re all even closer today.

e was once, quite literally, the fastest man on earth, but 80 years after the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, a powerful new movie, Race, reminds us that Jesse Owens was much more. He was the son of a sharecropper and the grandson of a slave. He managed, in the

midst of the Great Depression, to enroll in Ohio State University while working part-time to help support his poverty-stricken family. On May 25, 1935, at the Big Ten Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich., he ran the 100-yard dash in 9.4 seconds, tying the world record. He also set world records in three other events. And in 1936, at

the Olympics in Germany, his victory proved to be a shocking blow to the Nazis. Hitler had hoped the games would be a proving ground for his theory of the superiority of the German “Aryan” race. Instead, he watched as Owens became the first American track and field athlete to win four gold medals in a single Olympiad. It was a

As he said of his record-breaking long jump, 26 feet in a single bound, “I decided . . . I was going to fly. I was going to stay up in the air.” And it was in his family that he found the love and support he needed when he came back down to earth.

In Chicago, the city where Owens raised his family, Parade magazine had the rare opportunity to talk with his daughters and the actor who portrays him in the film, Stephan James. It is a stunning coincidence that we are meeting at the Waldorf Astoria, the same hotel that forced Owens to take the freight elevator after his Olympic win, when he was invited to a dinner in his honor. Beverly Owens Prather, 74, his youngest daughter, says, “I got on the elevator today and thought, Well, we’re at the Waldorf. But we’re not on the freight elevator anymore.” Beverly and sisters Gloria Owens Hemphill, 84 (she was a toddler when her father competed in the Olympics), and Marlene Owens Rankin, 77, agree that Race is a fitting tribute to their father, who died in 1980. “I’m very happy about it because I hope that

Race was shot in the same stadium where Owens competed. “It literally gave me chills, walking up to the stadium,” says James, 22. “It’s on a street that’s called Jesse Owens Alley. I felt like I was almost walking in his footsteps. I stood where he stood and thought of how he was probably feeling so alone in a place that’s so big, so massive. It was one of those moments where I felt like I

One of the most powerful elements of the film is the relationship between Owens and his coach at Ohio State, Larry Snyder, who is played by Jason Sudeikis. It was an unusual friendship for that time and place. Snyder was white and affluent. Owens was black and poor. But Snyder was also a young coach and a former Olympic hopeful himself. He and Owens developed a friendship that not only shaped sports history but lasted decades. Gloria remembers that Snyder was a bright, boisterous presence in their home. “Larry was part of the family,” she says. “He made it feel like you were the only person in the world that mattered,” Marlene says.

heroes,” he says. “I had seen Daniel Day-Lewis play Lincoln. I had seen David Oyelowo play Dr. King. [Both actors are British.] It wasn’t too far-fetched for me to play an American hero, but it was incredibly humbling. People hold them to such a high standard and [put them] on a pedestal, so you want to make those people proud.” With Race, James has been entrusted with another vital thread of American history. “To have the opportunity to teach a new generation about Jesse Owens is incredible.” he says. “I feel incredibly lucky.” While Owens did not get invited to the White House until 40 years after the Olympics, James has already been there. “I got an email and it said, ‘The White House would like to invite you to the screening of Selma.’ I thought, Yeah, right.” A few days later, his manager asked about the email. When James explained that he thought it was a prank, his manager said, “It’s very real and you’re going tomorrow.”

Race is more than a film about “that guy who won all those gold medals,” James says. Indeed, it is also a love story. “Winning a thousand gold medals didn’t mean anything to him unless he was doing it with her,” James says of Owens’ wife and childhood sweetheart, Ruth. It was their love, their daughters say, that helped him stand strong in the face of the brutal segregation, racism and limited opportunities that met him when he returned home from the Olympics. “Mother was a giving, caring person—she was family first,” says Beverly. “She loved Daddy and her children to death.” In fact, when Marlene (who couldn’t drive) needed to visit children at their foster homes as part of her new job as a social worker, Ruth drove her. “I remember one time somebody came into this woman’s house and said, ‘There’s a lady out there asleep in the car.’ I said, ‘That’s my mother!’ That’s the kind of mother she was.” 10 | FEBRUARY 21, 2016

Years later, the sisters would meet athletes who recalled meeting Snyder and told them, “He called me champ!” Marlene laughs as she tells the story. “Oh honey, he called everyone champ.” James and Sudeikis developed a friendship that mirrored the one they were playing on-screen. “As Jesse and Larry got closer, I got closer to Jason,” says James. “He’s a huge sports fan and like me, he played sports from a young age. We both knew what it was like to be coached and compete in sports, so we connected on that front right away.”

Home and family were so important to Owens that the girls didn’t really know the full scope of their father’s accomplishments until they left home and went to college. “We didn’t realize he was famous until we were adults,” says Marlene. “It was a different time and celebrity was different then. There wasn’t constant television and all of [the coverage] that made them larger than life. It was easy to remain normal.” Although the film doesn’t address it, for all of his feats, Owens came home from the Olympics to little fanfare. Because of segregation, he not only rode the freight elevator to events given in his honor, he also wasn’t invited to the White House as was the custom with Olympic medalists. At the time, Owens said, “After I came home from the 1936 Olympics with my four medals, it became increasingly apparent that everyone was going to slap me on the back, want to shake my hand or have me up to their suite. But no one was going to offer me a job.” For his daughters, the film Race has been an opportunity to honor their father in all of his facets, including the man who never stopped loving his country—even in moments when such regard was not returned. “I think the world will finally know what a humanitarian Daddy was and what a good person he was,” says Marlene. “He loved everyone. These days you can find it atop French toast at New York’s Egg Shop, in a classic frisée salad with bacon lardons at the Stoneacre Pantry in Newport, R.I., on kimchi-braised pork shoulder at San Francisco’s Boulettes Larder and even over shrimp risotto at Cheever’s Cafe in Oklahoma City. Happily, this is an easy trend to bring home—if you can boil water and crack an egg, you’re 80 percent there. And with these tips (and a little practice), you’ll soon perfect the poach.

Eggs Benedict With Meyer Lemon Citronette Adapted from the Egg Shop in New York City. In addition to spinach, you can add sliced avocado, kale or smoked salmon. If using regular lemons, add a bit more honey.

In a small bowl, make the citronette by whisking together 4 Tbsp extravirgin olive oil, 4 rounded Tbsp plain Greek yogurt, 2 Tbsp freshly squeezed lemon juice (preferably from Meyer lemons), 1 Tbsp honey and 2 pinches sea salt. Gradually add 1–2 Tbsp lukewarm water until it is of a pourable consistency. Poach 4 eggs. Arrange two toasted English muffin halves on each of two plates. Top each with 2 slices cooked bacon. Add a little cooked, chopped spinach. Top each with a poached egg. Sprinkle with sea salt. Drizzle on the citronette and sprinkle with chopped parsley. Serves 2. 12 | FEBRUARY 21, 2016

OP ACHING POINTERS 1. In a straightsided skillet, bring about 2 inches of water to just above a simmer, but not a rolling boil. A pan with straight sides makes it easier to neatly slide eggs into the water.

2. Add 4 Tbsp white wine vinegar (1 Tbsp per egg) to keep the whites from getting stringy.

3. Crack 1 egg into a small cup. Holding the cup as close to the surface of the water as possible, gently slip it into the simmering water. Do the same with 3 more eggs. Cook for about 2 minutes. When the whites are opaque and firm, remove using a slotted spoon. 4. If not serving immediately, cover the eggs with cold water and refrigerate. When you’re ready to serve, use a slotted spoon to transfer them to a bowl of very hot water for 15 minutes to warm them up.
