ashion for the next season has rolled out on the runways in the Capital. Amazon India Fashion Week Spring/ Summer 2017, organised by Fashion Design Council of India, is now underway with its first day being a mix of traditional and artisanal charm, amped with some Italian flair. At NSIC Grounds,

Okhla, the day started with a 16-designer showcase called Road to Chanderi with the aim to re-invent the weave according to each designer’s signature style. While we saw colour-blocked drapes at Gaurav Jai Gupta, Ruchika Sachdev’s gender-fluid shapes took form. And, all of this, with help of the gilded fabric, a layer of which even laced

the runway. The evening went on with designers Samant Chauhan doing signature ivories and reds, and Krishna Mehta championing Maheshwari fabric. Here’s a glimpse of the opening day, along with a few trends that you need to tap into for the next season.

ROAD TO CHANDERI The fashion week has been doing its bit to promote handloom and handcrafted weaves. Taking the same tradition forward, this time, the fabric in focus is Chanderi. The sheer gleam of the weave was turned and twisted into colour-

BEHIND THE GLOSS

‘I have a knack for fashion too’ C

lad in a safari suit, Ashwini Kumar Singh (head of security for Fashion Design Council of India) has been doing the job of providing safety and security to the people attending fashion week for almost a decade. He shares his experience with us and tells us what he thinks of the fashionable lot and more.

How long have you been associated with FDCI? I have been with them since 2007.

What’s the most challenging situation you guys faced in these many years of covering the show? Last year there was a fire incident and our guys doused it. To manage the guests and escort the celebrities is a

challenge for us because fans go berserk seeing them.

Do you wonder why some people are dressed like they are ready to hop on the ramp ? I used to, initially, and we thought why do many guests choose things that don’t seem wearable. But, now I too have got the knack for fashion and I know what looks good and what doesn’t.
