ilmmaker Karan Johar’s multistarrer, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, seems to be in deep waters with the proposed ban on its release by the Cinema Owners’ and Exhibitors Association. The reason is the presence of Pakistani actor Fawad Khan in the film. Analysts say that if the ban comes through, the film won’t be screened in single-screen theatres in Maharashtra, Goa, Gujarat and parts of Karnataka. This, say experts, can mean “a loss of Rs 5-6 crore” for the film. The association’s vice president, Nitin Dattar, said, “We have decided to not screen films with Pakistani actors. Keeping in mind

patriotic feelings and national interest, we request all members to refrain from screening it. We’ll also request other associations to do the same,” he said. The film has been made with a budget of Rs 55 crore. Many voices in the industry denounce the call for ban. “You can’t put a break on a film which is ready for release. Let the producers’ association take the call. All these things are coming last minute for everyone,” says trade expert Atul Mohan, Trade analyst Amul Mohan, too, calls the decision invalid. “When the film was being made, things were not this bad. I don’t buy into the speculation of the film not releasing at all. The ones
taking a stand are singlescreen cinemas. Multi-screens will not be affected,” he says. He adds,“The film is distributed by Fox studios. They have already started the process of advance money. It will not be easy for distributors to say no to them. Also, it is important to understand that for theatres, it is not about rejecting one Dharma Production film but saying no to many Fox Studio films, which include many Hollywood movies too.” he says. Expert Rajesh Thadani says, “the losses could go upto 25% if the ban is indeed enforced.” The film’s spokesperson refused to comment. n yashika.mathur@hindustantimes.com
