hey readily admit to having a “special connect” with Diwali, and this year, Ranbir Kapoor and Anushka Sharma have a rather special festival as their big ticket venture, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil just hit theatres. Both the actors spoke to us about their favourite Diwali memory. Ranbir: I remember one particular Diwali incident. It was the only time when my father (Rishi Kapoor) really shouted at me. I was around 8-9 year old. There was Laxmi Puja at RK Studios. I forgot to remove my shoes before entering the praying area. My father is very religious, he got upset and gave me a tapli (smack) on my head. And my father’s tapli is like a box from Arnold Schwarzenegger. I cried a lot that Diwali. Anushka (to Ranbir): And ever since, you never entered the Puja area with shoes on? Ranbir: Never. Anushka: My father was away from home on festivals because he was in the army. But Diwali was the time when he would be home. That was always special because my mom used to be very happy. So, whichever Diwali my father was with us was my most memorable Diwali.

ctor Sidharth Malhotra moved to Mumbai nine years ago but usually heads home to Delhi to celebrate Diwali with parents and extended family. Though he has had a working Diwali for the past few years, this year, he managed to fly home just in time to attend the annual pre-Diwali dinner ritual. “I was here for a professional commitment for just a day so I went home for dinner. I have just one day off and I am in Mumbai so most of my day will be spent with

friends and in social gatherings. I go to the Bachchans’ Diwali bash each year and its great fun. This year Sonam’s (actor Sonam Kapoor) having one so I will be heading there. The people from the industry are extremely warm and welcoming, and Diwali is the

time we all get together to unwind.” However, all his memories of the festival are attached to Delhi. “I have very fond childhood memories. My house is in South Delhi so all of us used to gather there. Till my late teens I celebrated every Diwali with my family.” n
