Celebrating the beauty of brocade PRINT FASHION WEEK SEASON 2

T

he charm of India’s handloom is such that it suits all outfits — traditional or modern. And it’s amazing to see how the country’s design mavens have been championing this beauty of handwoven textiles. HT City’s Print Fashion Week celebrates our stalwart, fashion designer Rajesh Pratap Singh’s collection — an ode to rich, hand-beaten gold with fabrics that hold a place in history, especially Kinkhab. “It’s a form of very heavy brocade... Handwoven, and done in Benaras. The fabric is still used in monasteries and I’ve been experimenting with it for 18 years now,” says Singh. Snigdha Ahuja

KATY, ORLANDO HAVE BROKEN UP 10-month-long Tactorheromance between English Orlando Bloom and

American singer Katy Perry is over. Reportedly, Bloom initiated the split. “After Halloween, Orlando told pals he had decided to end the relationship as he’s not ready to get married and have babies,” says a source. Meanwhile, Bloom was spotted enjoying lunch with a mystery woman in London. Agencies

RUMOURS AFFECT EVERYONE: FARHAN Prashant Singh

T SIDDHARTH SLAMS RANVEER’S AD ctor Siddharth has A spoken against an advertisement for a

clothing brand. With the tagline, ‘Don’t hold back. Take your work home’, the ad campaign features actor Ranveer Singh holding a woman on his shoulders, on his way to work. “A new low for women’s rights in the workplace in India. What were they thinking? #Fail,” tweeted Siddharth.

his August, Farhan Akhtar completed 15 years in the film industry. And he hasn’t just made a mark as a filmmaker, but also as an actor. Here’s catching up with the 42-year-old about his work, rumours and the baggage of keeping up with a family lineage.

When your personal life makes news, does it affect you a lot or you are used to it? Everybody gets affected. To say that it has no effect on you is false. If you had a fabricated story coming out every two weeks or every month written about you,

it would affect you. You’d be like, ‘What’s the problem with people?’ or ‘Why can’t they let me be?’ And that’s the thought that comes into anyone’s mind. You are like, ‘Why are you wasting your energy in getting so creative?’

Of late, you have been linked to several names… If anyone wants to be so creative, please send me your script and maybe, we will produce it (laughs). Beyond that, I don’t know what to say. Whether it’s them talking about Shraddha (Kapoor; actor), about another co-actor of mine, or a sudden random story about bechari (poor) Kalki (Koechlin; actor), what

do you say? How many battles are you going to fight when someone has such imagination? The best part is somebody allows them to put that stuff out. You can’t waste your energy on that.

You’ve made a name for yourself. But you’re also lyricist Javed Akhtar and screenwriter Honey Irani’s son, and filmmaker Zoya Akhtar’s brother. Does that add to performance pressure? The pressure comes with the expectations of people and wanting to live up to it, and not with my family lineage or my repertoire. You have a responsibility towards every film (you do), the audience and every person who

collaborated with you. You want audiences to like the film and recognise the effort you put in it.

You have an enviable track record as a director too. Is that why you’re so careful about going back to helming films? Yes, as your choices define you, especially in a creative field. Everyone knows you have the freedom to say ‘Yes’ or ‘No’. But if you say yes to something, it defines who you are, especially when you are directing a film. You know it’s going to take about a yearand-a-half or two years of your life, so you want to be exceedingly passionate about the project. n
